Security revamp to tackle abuse BY LAURA LITTLE and NICK TOSCANO
He said a new state governmentfunded mental health unit, opening at the hospital in 2016, would address the problems by including areas only accessible by women and staff. VMIAC director Isabell Collins said while women-only areas and swipe cards were a step in the right direction, there needed to be many changes to the way mental health facilities operated. Many women who completed the survey said their reports of abuse and harassment had been ignored by staff. “There is an attitude that women with mental illnesses don’t matter,”
Ms Collins said. “When these women aren’t taken seriously, it is soul-destroying. It is bad enough that you have been raped or sexually assaulted, but to have someone undermine that is devastating.” Ms Collins said mental health units needed to ensure all patients were assessed on admission to determine their vulnerability to being abused or abusing others. The report found that assessments were often skipped because nurses had too much other paperwork. Mr Cornelissen said patients at Werribee were always assessed on admission.
When Merinda Epstein suffered a manic episode last year, she was whisked away to a highdependency unit. “I was the only woman in there,” Ms Epstein (pictured) said. “And that was so dumb.” She said the unit had seven other patients at the time and they were the ones with the greatest mental health needs. Most were furious that they were in there. “It was like a washing machine of distress,” the Altona Meadows resident said. It wasn’t long before Ms Epstein, 56, who suffers bipolar disorder, found her fears about being the only woman weren’t unfounded. She said that one morning, a male patient came into her room as she was getting dressed and cornered her. “He scared me. He pulled down his pants, with all his genitalia showing, he came over to me, pinned me against a wall,’’ she said. Ms Epstein managed to get past the man and into a common area. Two days later, the man returned to her room. This time, he came into her shower and began urinating in her direction. “I can still smell him,” she said. Ms Epstein has lodged a formal complaint with the hospital involved and the Department of Human Services. — Nick Toscano

TAILORED swipe cards and women-only areas will be introduced at Werribee Mercy Hospital to make its mental health unit safer for women, with a new report revealing that almost half the women in psychiatric units have been sexually assaulted. The Victorian Mental Illness Awareness Council (VMIAC) report states that in the past 20 years many women have been abused, assaulted and harassed by male patients and staff in the state’s mental health centres. A survey of 50 women who had been admitted to psychiatric units for treatment found that 85 per cent of them felt unsafe, while 67 per cent reported being sexually harassed. Forty-five per cent said they had been sexually assaulted. Mercy Health chief executive Stephen Cornelissen said there had been fewer than a dozen allegations of sexual assault reported to the hospital in the past three years, but that was too many. “Over the past three years Mercy Health has improved the way it assesses and manages risk in its mental health unit and introduced specific practices to improve safety for women in our care,” he said. “New state government funding of $259,000 will improve the current unit to include tailored swipe card access allowing clients to lock their bedrooms, a client nurse call system and gender specific courtyards.” Mr Cornelissen said psychiatric units had been designed to operate as mixed gender facilities, which limited the ability of staff to restrict access to bedrooms.

Winners: the professor and the refugee BY LAURA LITTLE

program to encourage healthy living. The message is getting out through the community that we have to try and improve our nutrition through increasing our consumption of fruit and veg,” Cr Fairclough said. For the past eight years, Mr Farah has dedicated his time to helping men from Somalia, Eritrea, Djibouti and Ethiopia find work through his role as multicultural officer for the Horn Afrik project at the Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre.
Mr Farah said many men came to Australia with qualifications but couldn’t find work, while those who attended Melbourne universities were also unlikely to be employed. “There is a bit of discrimination . . . many companies are still struggling to trust us. There is a fence between people looking for work and employers.” With the support of former Melbourne MP Lindsay Tanner, the project has placed about 80 men
at the National Australia Bank for training. Some of the men have been permanently employed by the bank. Mr Farah is also starting a Melbourne Employment Forum, with the help of Melbourne MP Adam Bandt, to improve refugees’ access to work. “It is an issue that needs to be addressed so the community isn’t left behind,’’ he said. ‘‘It is very important for the government to consider the needs of our community and help them.”
OMAR Farah and Bob Fairclough may have been born more than 13,000 kilometres apart, but they still have a lot in common. On Monday, the Point Cook residents were granted Medals of the Order of Australia for their services to the community. Mr Farah, who came to Australia 26 years ago as a refugee from Somalia, was recognised for helping men from the Horn of Africa find employment. Cr Fairclough was honoured for his community work – including his involvement with Werribee Mercy Hospital, a community garden and Wyndham council – and services to education. Cr Fairclough said education was his passion. He worked at Victoria University from 1992-2005, was head of school of life science and was made an adjunct professor in 2009. “I had the privilege of supervising 14 PhD students at Victoria and La Trobe universities. It was pleasing to see them go on to very worthwhile causes,” he said. “I was also fortunate enough to be part of a team at the uni who developed new courses, including forensic science and food and nutrition, which attracted undergrad students from all over Australia.” Cr Fairclough has been involved with Werribee Mercy since 1996, helping to establish its urgentcare unit, which later became the emergency department. He is also a member of the Hoppers Crossing Rotary Club and the Wyndham and Hobsons Bay Local Learning and Employment Network, and is chairman of Wyndham’s first community garden. “We have developed an education

BY NICK TOSCANO A CHARITY group that ran out of food vouchers due to a surge of asylum seekers being released into Wyndham has been granted relief from the federal government. In February, UnitingCare Werribee Support and Housing ran out of food vouchers for the first time in 13 years, saying it couldn’t cope with the extra demand of hundreds of asylum seekers housed at nearby transitional accommodation. Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the federal Community Services Department had given $25,000 to the organisation in response to its growing need.

has dealt the agency a 150 per cent spike in demand. Ms Muir said the funding boost would allow the charity to continue providing emergency support to vulnerable residents in Melbourne’s fastest-growing region. Arguing that detention centres were more harmful to mental health and more expensive than community release, Immigration Minister Brendan O’Connor last month announced that families would be eligible for bridging visas, which were previously given only to single men. “If they are found to be refugees, they will be granted a visa to remain in Australia. If they are not, they will be expected to depart Australia,” he said.

“This funding will ensure these services can continue to help people in need,” Ms Gillard, the Lalor MP, said. Wyndham welfare groups said the soaring demand was largely due to groups of up to 150 asylum seekers being released from detention centres into transitional housing in Tarneit every six weeks since August. But after the government stepped up its border protection policies, prohibiting bridging visa holders from getting jobs, Werribee Support and Housing chief executive Carol Muir said asylum seekers had been forced into destitution. Even after they’ve finished packing the day’s food parcels they are still scurrying around, changing bin liners and cleaning coffee cups. It’s eagerness to help that would be attractive to any employer. After coming into Werribee Support and Housing to ask for food, Senthuran Suthagar, Thineshkumar Sundralingam and Vasantham Kanapathipilai have been taken on as volunteers. The three Sri Lankan asylum seekers, aged in their early 20s, are among the thousands who have arrived in Australia since last August and been released on bridging visas that deny them the right to work. When outreach workers went to their shared rental house at St Albans this year, the trio were sleeping on one sheet each on the floor. The centre provided them with mattresses, blankets, kitchen and laundry appliances, and a TV. Now, as volunteers, they help load and transport donated furniture for other vulnerable Wyndham residents three days a week. Suddenly, says Senthuran, 20, the work ban doesn’t seem so grim. “We love coming here, meeting new people and helping,” he says. “It doesn’t matter we can’t work because we have got it here.” Ms Muir said the centre would apply for an Immigration Department grant to buy cricket equipment for Sri Lankan asylum seekers in the area. — Nick Toscano

Helping the helpers
WYNDHAM council has slashed recurrent funding to key community groups including social welfare, housing and education providers, blaming a “tight economic environment”. Several groups across Wyndham have reported that funding from council’s identified needs program had been cut by as much as 50 per cent in the proposed 2013-14 budget. The cuts mean an outreach and early intervention program that helps 400 vulnerable residents a year is on the chopping block and some of Wyndham’s annual community events will be “significantly scaled back”. Council director of community development Kelly Grigsby said the latest funding round was extremely competitive. “For many years, Wyndham City has been plugging financial holes in services which are the responsibility of state and federal governments,” she said. “This approach is unsustainable in a rapidly growing municipality.” Wyndham Community and Education Centre chief executive Jenny Barrera said the organisation’s multicultural fiesta and June’s Refugee Week event relied on council grants. “This is going to mean we’ll have to seriously scale them back by about half,” he said. Harry van Moorst, director of the Western Region Environment centre, which has had its funding halved, said the community sector deserved to be a higher priority for the council. “It will mean more pressure on volunteers across the board,” he said.

Still our land, but owners in limbo BY NICK TOSCANO
A Glenorden footballer faces a life ban by AFL Victoria after being suspended for 18 weeks by the WRFL. The 18-year-old was found to have struck an opponent during the half-time break of an under-18s match against West Footscray on June 1. His opponent required five stitches. AFL Victoria rules state a combined total sentence of 16 weeks or greater will “result in automatic deregistration”.

LANDOWNERS on the outskirts of Wyndham whose properties will be compulsorily acquired and turned into a native grassland reserve say they have been “left in limbo”. Despite more than 100 landowners being told in 2009 that their land would be sacrificed to provide the Western Grassland Reserve as an environmental offset for Melbourne’s growth, a date has yet to be set for when they will be bought out. Landowners say less than 7 per cent of the 15,000 hectares required for the reserves has been acquired in the past four years. A recent statement from Environment Minister Ryan Smith said developer contributions needed to fund compensation to landowners could be 30 years away. The latest Wyndham council rates notices, showing some property valuations have dropped by more than half, have raised fears that the lower figures could be reflected in
the compensation. Mount Cottrell’s Sasha Janson said landowners had been forced to put their lives on hold. “It’s like someone saying they’ll buy your car, and they can’t pay you for 20 years, but in the meantime you can’t drive the car and you have to keep it maintained,” she said. “The money is not coming in from developers so, from our point of view, our lives are on hold and we’re into the fifth year.” Ms Janson said her 35-hectare parcel of land had been revalued by council, from $643,000 down to $252,000. “It’s distressing to know that from our 350,000-square-metre property we may barely be able to buy a 400-square-metre block of land in Werribee, let alone build a house,” she said. The reserve will cover two large areas around Mount Cottrell, southeast of Melton, and around Little River, west of Werribee. Parcels of land were rezoned in 2010 to prevent them being sold. A spokesman for the Department of Environment

going on . . . ringing each other about what we’re hearing from the grapevine,” he said. “The potential windfall could be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, but at the moment it’s just costing me money and we don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Language program a lesson in friendship BY LAURA LITTLE
A UNIQUE education program is breaking down language barriers at a Werribee primary school. About 30 grade 2 pupils at Wyndham Park Primary School are learning to read and write in English and Karen as part of an education department bilingual program. The program began as a pilot at two Wyndham kindergartens in 2010. The pupils have continued the classes during prep and grade 1 at Wyndham Park. About a quarter of the school’s pupils have a Karen background. In the past three years, new school pupils who are keen to learn to talk to their Karen friends have joined the program. Pupils are taught in English three days a week and in Karen for two days. The subjects taught in Karen mirror those being taught in English. Teacher Louise Holley says the program helps Karen children learn English and allows English-speaking pupils to talk to Karen classmates in
their own language. Karen teacher Tu Tu says the program gives pupils of different backgrounds a chance to shine. “Some are good at writing, others are good at reading. Some students need me to write out the words and then they copy them out.” Mr Tu encourages pupils to use Karen as much as possible. He takes them on excursions, which they have to write about in their new language, and introduces them to Karen music during classes so they can learn about his culture. For non-Karen pupils, the classes are a chance to learn something new. Tauheed, whose family speaks Dari, said Karen was a fun language to learn. “It’s easy to learn. I like learning numbers in Karen. It helps me talk to my friends.” Principal Troy Johns said the program had helped Karen families connect with the wider school community. “The Karen students don’t just stick together any more. There’s a

greater understanding of them and their culture.” Funding for the program runs out at the end of this year, but Mr Johns
says the school is looking at ways to continue the classes. Parent Ester Sunny said she would be disappointed if the program
finished. She said her children had made more friends and had passed English on to other members of the family since joining the program.

Reprieve for Glen Devon Primary School site has been vacant since the school merged with Glen Orden Primary at the end of 2010. “Should the site be declared surplus to educational needs, government requirements state that the department must first offer the property to other government departments, then to the local council and then to the public at a market price determined by the valuers general, the spokesman said. As reported by the Weekly, the school was demolished in February, more than two years after it was closed. In November, 2011, fire ripped through the site, sparking calls from residents for the land to be sold. Kevin O’Brien, who owns a property next to the school, feared the land would become a fire hazard or dumping ground. The council and Wyndham Community and Education Centre have suggested the site be used for a community education centre. — Laura Little
BY NICK TOSCANO DEAKIN University and Gordon Institute of TAFE have unveiled plans to offer dozens of tertiary and training courses in Wyndham by the start of next year. Deakin has confirmed it is looking for properties to rent or buy in Werribee and Hoppers Crossing. Vice-chancellor Jane den Hollander said the university was establishing a presence in Wyndham so it could bring higher education options to the area’s rapidly growing population. “The south-west of Melbourne is increasing its demand for higher education with a 30 per cent increase in students enrolling in university over the last two years and an anticipated annual population growth of 6.2 per cent, she said. Professor den Hollander said Deakin would offer degrees in business, teaching and childhood education at its Wyndham facility. “For a lot of mature-age people who have left school, have had a job, had their children, these are often
THE site of the former Glen Devon Primary School has been left out of a pilot project that will allow nine disused schools across Melbourne to be transformed into community facilities and residential developments. The state government last week announced that a land rezoning project will be piloted at nine vacant school sites across Monash, Casey and Bendigo. Education Minister Martin Dixon said the sites could be bought by councils or interested parties and presented opportunities for economic growth and job creation. He said selling the land would save hundreds of thousands of dollars in maintenance costs and prevent the buildings becoming magnets for vandals and rubbish dumping. An Education Department spokesman said Glen Devon had been left out of the project because it was yet to be deemed surplus to educational needs. The site

LIPOSUCTION TO THE LEGS
Green rubbishes Wyndham tip bid BY NICK TOSCANO PLANS for a 45-metre landfill mound at Werribee have raised eyebrows in State Parliament, with one MP launching fierce criticism of Wyndham council. In a letter to Wyndham councillors and management, Western Metro- politan Greens MP Colleen Hartland slammed their decision to expand the “rubbish mountain” at the Wests Road tip site, which is already 26 metres above ground. The council is applying to the Environment Protection Authority for permission to enlarge its landfill mound to 45 metres. Ms Hartland told the council she would investigate “avenues of intervention” from the state government level. She said increasing the above-ground height of the mound raised risks of bad odour, dust, leakage and contaminants that could end up in surface and ground water. “Clean water is a precious resource for the environment, for local communities and for farms,” she said. “There will be increased
risk of contaminating Cherry Tree Creek, which is connected to the Ramsar wetlands within the Western Treatment Plant.” Ms Hartland said the enlarged mound would detract from the visual beauty of the area and obscure views of the You Yangs. The call for council to scrap the plans has found supporters online, with a petition attracting almost 120 signatures. The petition urges council to keep the West Road landfill and all future landfills at ground level, adding that risks of going high above ground include bad odours, leaks and structural failures. “You have an opportunity to set a worthwhile precedent by deciding to keep landfills below or at ground level, instead of leaving a legacy of waste and environmental vandalism as a very visible monument to your term as a councillor,” the petition states. Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said Melbourne, Hobsons Bay, Yarra, Port Phillip, Whitehorse and Greater Geelong councils used the tip. The council reaped nearly $29.3 million in tip fees in 2011-12.

Works pave the way for new Wyndham pools BY LAURA LITTLE
At Manor Lakes, we’re creating more than just a great place to live, we’re helping to build a real community.
An annual initiative of the Dennis Family Corporation, The Manor Lakes Community Fund awards financial grants to local notfor-profit groups in the Wynham area. Since its establishment in 2001, the Manor Lakes Community Fund has distributed over $200,000 to local not-for-profit organisations, assisting in a wide range of very worthy projects.
Applications to apply for a financial grant open Monday 17th June 2013. Your group should complete an application form and return it by 5.00pm Friday 2nd August 2013. An application form can be obtained by visiting the Manor Lakes Sales and Information office at 2 Eppalock Drive, Wyndham Vale, 3024. (Melway Ref: 204 H1). Alternatively, visit www.manorlakes.com.au or phone 9731 0277. Completed application forms must be returned in person or by post to the above address or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org
Land Sales Office: 2 Eppalock Drive, Wyndham Vale (Melways ref. 204 H1). Open 7 days 10am to 5pm.
A vibrant, healthy community takes more than bricks and mortar, it requires a range of services provided by community groups and associations, covering sport, welfare, culture, recreation and many other areas.
WITH demolition under way, all that remains of Wyndham’s only public indoor swimming pool is the roof and its supports. Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre is being redeveloped by the council at a cost of $45 million. Builders are concentrating on removing the old pools, leaving massive holes in the ground. They will be replaced by a new 50-metre concrete pool with moveable boom, a warm water hydrotherapy pool with in-built spa, a four-lane learn-to-swim pool and a children’s water play centre. Two of Victoria’s largest water slides will be added outside the centre. Behind the centre, work has started on a new car park for gym members. This will allow ADCO Constructions to redevelop the existing car park. Mayor Heather Marcus said the redevelopment would deliver social, economic and health benefits to the city’s burgeoning population. “The community has outgrown the current Wyndham
New pool: Heavy machinery demolishes the old swim centre.
Leisure and Events Centre’s facilities,’’ she said. “The expansion will provide our growing municipality with a state-of-theart aquatics and events venue that will be a major landmark and source of pride for Wyndham.” Construction is expected to take about 18 months.
Dennis Family Corporation will appoint a judging panel to consider each application for a grant from the Community Fund. For each application the panel may decide, at its absolute discretion, to either award a grant from the Community Fund pool or to refuse the application. Any funds remaining in the Community Fund after all application decisions have been made maybe added to the Community Fund pool for the following year. Gongs for city’s fabulous five BY LAURA LITTLE
MARCO DE LUCA
FIVE Wyndham students have been recognised for achieving top scores in their VCE studies last year. They were among 286 students who received a Premier’s VCE Award last Wednesday, recognising the hard work they’d put into their studies. Westbourne Grammar School’s Tessa Marshall received a study score of 50 in biology, while Jennifer Reuter from Thomas Carr College was awarded for her perfect score in IT Applications. Andrea Anastasi from MacKillop Catholic Regional College in Werribee was one of three students to be awarded for Italian language studies. Heathdale Christian College’s Salomi Ganthala and Natalie Graham received awards for sport and recreation. Ms Ganthala said she was surprised by her perfect 50. ‘‘Last
year was a really full-on year for me. My dad was in hospital for the first half of the year. I wouldn’t have been able to get through the year without my teachers and family.” Ms Graham hopes to become a physiotherapist when she leaves school. She says her love of exercise played a big part in her score. “I’d done a certificate III in fitness the year before and I really enjoyed being in the gym and doing exercise.” Throughout the year, Ms Graham and Ms Ganthala were required to take part in hikes, bicycle rides, surfing camps, rock climbing exercises and snorkling classes. They also entered for the Duke of Edinburgh award, travelling to New Zealand to teach other students, and have since become the school’s leaders for the award. Teacher Jim Graham said the school had a history of students receiving top scores in sport and recreation.

Riders do come off second best in a collision. And although a fair percentage of rider crashes happen due to rider error, the clear majority arise in two-vehicle collisions where the other vehicle is at fault most of the time. Look twice for bikes. Rob (via web) Re: Point Cook West land sale a boon and burden, says action group (Weekly, June 5):
So [Planning Minister Matthew] Guy says “the government knew it had to put infrastructure in place”. No action, no response either from Terry Mulder. Shouldn’t he be speaking for the Liberals, as transport minister? Peter (via web) They need to stop the moneygrabbing local government from also approving high-density zones in residential areas. Most don’t know that Wyndham council doesn’t need
to consult the community when it declares residential areas mixed use. Council approved a 300-seat place of worship, 100 apartments, a bottle shop and some retail shops in a very small area of Alamanda estate. What a laugh for Point Cook. Council needs all the rates and taxes it can get to the detriment of the great communities being built for families. How completely shameful! Think of all the good things that the council could have done instead of undermining their staff and engaging in covert operations! Cecilia (via web)
There’s a huge difference between a legitimate investigation of suspected fraud and hiring a stooge to coerce employees to breach council policies. The latter only serves to undermine morale and create massive distrust of management. Ron Woods
Re: Wyndham council spending $15,000 to back referendum ‘yes’ vote (Weekly, May 29):
Council is managing its budget by
hiring lazy staff, who drink and go shopping during the day; then it’s spending more money hiring undercover staff to spy on its own lazy workers, then more money to fight their unfair dismissal claims. Based on Wyndham’s population, the MAV should be asking for more money to be spent on public transport, not feeding their own pockets to run a campaign to get local incompetents recognised. If this is a referendum, Labor has lost another vote to the Greens. Yes? More like no (via web) Re: Sign up for Gonski or lose millions: PM (Weekly, May 29):
Come on, Dr Napthine, if you really want to tell the west that we are not being ignored, do a better job than Julia Gillard. Voters here are swinging to the Greens out of sheer frustration. It can’t be difficult to do a better job than Julia, when she did nothing for the west. Continue to ignore us? (via web)

For more than 60 years, AMES has helped migrants and refugees settle in Australia, writes Nick Toscano
Maha Mohamed from Eritrea [ 16 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE June 12, 2013
he’s been hunched over her keyboard with an ear to the phone for hours. Halfway through another busy day in an office on Barkly Street, Footscray, employment manager Maha Mohamed turns off the computer monitor and eases into her desk chair. A warm, open face and winning smile make her the sort of person you’d want to find here. Beyond her window are musty signs above shutters and shopfronts. They’re stamped by the mark of waves of migrants – Italians, Vietnamese, Indians, Africans – who have remade the neighbourhood time and again over decades. The 1000 job seekers in Mohamed’s client file are the latest crop of newcomers. Many of them are padding through the corridors two floors up from her, moving between classrooms and grappling with English vocabulary in the hope of getting it to a grade that makes them employable. Net migration in Australia has continued its dominance as the main driver of population growth, swelling to a five-year high in 2012 – almost 230,000. Mohamed is blithely undaunted. But she knows her job has become more important than ever. “If we weren’t here,” she says, pursing her crimson lips and shaking her head, “it would be a nightmare.” This is the front line of a little-known fight to prevent an underclass of Australians emerging; migrants and refugees blocked out of the workforce because they can’t speak the tongue and barred as a consequence from substantial income and meaningful community engagement. The staff refer to AMES as a “quiet achiever”. The mission statement of AMES – formerly an acronym for Adult Multicultural Education Service – has broadened from the role of English teacher to helping people settle in Australia, find housing, plan careers and start businesses. Teams at branches in Footscray, St Albans, Werribee, Sunbury, Sunshine, Broadmeadows and 30 more sites spanning greater Melbourne have helped half a million new arrivals settle in Victoria since 1951. Nationally, about 500 job seekers are placed in employment each month. The nation’s 800 paid AMES staff and 2300 volunteers speak 93 languages, and almost half were born overseas. On first sighting, you wouldn’t peg Mohamed as a former refugee who had fled civil war in the embattled Horn of African state Eritrea. The bright, energetic and colourfully clothed success story put aside her tertiary qualifications several years ago and chose to help people through the struggles of resettlement that she knew all too well. “A lot of people don’t think they can make it, and this is what I say to them: ‘Look at me. What do I have that you don’t have?” Many young refugee arrivals have little or no English. Some have experienced lengthy

disruptions to their schooling because of war, displacement and long periods in refugee camps; many have never set foot inside a classroom. And as the human tide continues to rise, policy-makers in Canberra are making Mohamed’s workload heavier still. A week earlier, Immigration Department secretary Martin Bowles told a budget estimates hearing that more than 22,500 asylum seekers had arrived in 2012-13, an average of about 1875 a month. He acknowledged this could realistically rise to 25,000, five times more than had been forecast. Off-shore processing centres are packed, and asylum seekers who have undergone health and security checks are being released into the community en masse while awaiting processing. Every six weeks, hundreds are being granted bridging visas and moved through transitional housing in Melbourne’s western suburbs alone. The problem this poses for AMES’s settlement, training and employment staff is that they are released under a new “no advantage” rule that prohibits bridging visa holders from working, even in the most menial job. Introduced last August, when the federal government moved to harden its border protection stance, the changes put bridging visa holders on a work ban, limited them to just 89 per cent of the dole – about $31 a day – and restricted their free English classes to 100 hours, whereas migrants get 510. “We get a lot of people from detention centres who are stressed. They want to work, they want to support their families back home,” says Mohamed. “It’s a difficulty, because we can’t offer them a lot of the services they need. The minute you say you are not eligible [to work or train], it increases that stress. ‘‘Research shows the ability to work was
the single most important factor in successful resettlement. It gives them an income and a way to engage in the community.” Some reasons for the high levels of joblessness are common to all migrants. Limited access to transport, poor English and little understanding of Australia’s employment system are barriers many foreigners face in looking for work. Other reasons are more acute for asylum seekers, as some have been denied work rights for so long that they have lost skills and confidence. The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre’s Jana Favero says depriving people of the right to work can be damaging. “Their time is idle and they’re losing vital skills, and their confidence in their ability to sustain themselves deteriorates and causes mental health problems.” AMES staff aren’t about to weigh into political finger-pointing, though. Here in the western suburbs, the beating heart of multiculturalism in Melbourne, there’s work to be done, and they’ll do it within the parameters drawn by the government of the day.
About four kilometres from the complex on Barkly Street, the Maribyrnong Immigration Detention Centre sits behind a long driveway and high steel fences off a busy main road. It has been the final stop for many refugees now enrolled at AMES – like Roohollah Soleimani, who began the fearsome exodus from Iran two years ago, before his boat was taken to Christmas Island. There, he was detained for three months, and was moved to the Curtin detention centre in Western Australia for three months more. It was another half-year behind wire fences at centres in Perth and Maribyrnong before he got out. “It was bad,” he says, “but I wanted to start a new life.” Released one year ago, and now living in Maidstone, he has begun
Nhan Nguyen at a craft class
Waleed Soliman is working on his English
learning English and undertaking vocational training in the hope of becoming a plasterer at a building company. “I learned no English in Iran; all I could say was, ‘Hello, how are you?’. I had been a plasterer for 10 years in my country, but it is different here. Many things are different.” It is a hurdle that many new arrivals, like Soleimani, are made to jump. “An electrician or a plumber, a nurse or a doctor, they can’t just come to Australia and say, ‘Here’s my qualification, because these can be dangerous areas,” counselling co-ordinator Heather Weaver says. “It needs to be made sure they can practise safely here, and this often involves extra training, certification and licensing.” Then there’s the cultural aspect of work – how you treat people, OH&S, award rates – that are all part of what the AMES team helps them learn.
When Pavida Mammone, 46, talks to her
Last year, there was a major spike in Vietnamese refugees coming to Australia, with 460 arriving by boat. Among them was Nhan Nguyen. He has been here for nine months, since escaping the increasing persecution by the communist government ruling his homeland. Nguyen was forced out because he is a Catholic. “The groups attacked churches,” says the softly-spoken 20-year-old. Since 2011, human rights observers have warned of intensifying repression of minority Christians, claiming the government has been closing small churches, compelling public renunciations of faith, and arresting worshippers. Nguyen left with his brother, spending one month at Christmas Island and a year at Wickham Point detention centre in Darwin. “I want to learn English and study, I want to do welding.” The pair are now living in Footscray, in a rental property AMES helped them secure.
Australian husband’s relatives, maintaining a conversation can be tricky. She migrated from Thailand’s Kalasin province 12 months ago and her limited English struggles to keep up when confronted by the halting vernacular. The Melton resident has a university degree and worked as a midwife at a hospital for 25 years. She hopes to rekindle her career in Australia but knows a better grasp of English will be crucial. Halfway through her 510 hours, Mammone is studying at AMES, St Albans, from 9am to 2.45pm four days a week. “When people talk to me, the accent is difficult. I have to improve my English first, because I want to work.”
During his lunch break at AMES in Werribee on a Wednesday afternoon, 29-yearold Waleed Soliman, from Egypt, is eager to share his impression of the course. The father-of-two came here after meeting an Australian girl in a tourist area of Egypt while he was working at a juice bar. Two weeks later, they were married, and she was pregnant. Although they got by with broken English and hand gestures at first, when they moved to Truganina, north of Werribee, and were surrounded by his wife’s large extended family, Soliman found idioms were hard to get the hang of. “What do you mean ‘hit the nail on the head’? What nail?” he laughs. He says newcomers need tangible help if they are to integrate, not only with English but with understanding Australian culture, and setting long-term plans for career prospects. “It’s not just English ... it’s attitude, slang, and learning about the actual Australian culture, that you need to know if you want to become an actual Australian.”

Art set to bust school’s boundary
Little River landowners are being urged to attend a free information session this month to help them tackle one of the municipality’s most significant environmental pests. Serrated tussock is a devastating weed that has invaded Victoria, including many areas of Wyndham, and is considered one of the state’s most costly agricultural threats. Landowners have a legal responsibility to manage declared pest plants and animals on their property to ensure they don’t affect agricultural production on neighbouring farms or impact the environment. Council’s free information session will be from 7-9pm on Tuesday, June 25, at Little River Reserve, You Yangs Road.

STUDENTS at a Wyndham Vale school are hoping to make a difference in their community through art. Year 9 students at Manor Lakes College are spending one day a week creating public art as part of the school’s ‘learning for life’ program. The program encourages students to get involved in their community through public artworks, excursions and community service. Art technician Cathy Mackay said a public art group led by teacher Larissa Taylor was improving the school grounds by painting water tanks and creating sculptures, helping students take ownership of new buildings. Ms Mackay said the school was also looking for community groups and businesses interested in having water tanks painted or art sculptures installed. “We are searching for interested people so we can branch out,” she said. ‘‘It is out intention to reach further into the community through public art projects in the local area.’’

Young people and their families are being urged to contribute to Wyndham council’s new youth plan. The plan will guide the development of the city’s youth services programs for the next three to five years and help council understand the issues, priorities and aspirations of young people. Residents aged 12-25 and their families can make submissions until Friday, June 21. Details: youth.wyndham.vic.gov.au
Chris Byrne nominated for top award When Chris Byrne began his career at Werribee Mazda as an 18 year old in 1983, under the mentorship of his uncle, Colin Johnstone, he didn’t foresee his nomination as Business Person of the Year in this year’s Wyndham Business Awards. But he put in the hard yards, working his way through various departments within the dealership and setting himself up for the success that has now led to his nomination. It was while working alongside his uncle that he learned the right way to run a business so when opportunity knocked he was ready to respond. He became an integral cog in the resurrected Ford dealership in Hoppers Crossing and, in 1994, Westpoint Ford opened its doors. Chris is working hard to put the Wyndham area on the map as an exciting, positive shopping destination easily accessible to metropolitan Melbourne customers who can be in Werribee in 20 minutes via the Westgate bridge.
Under Chris’s leadership, the business has not only survived an economically challenging climate for the past year but has actually expanded. Chris believes this is testimony to the strength of his team and his personal forte of surrounding himself with positive, like-minded people and business partners who, together, set the stage for real success. But as principal dealer at Westpoint Ford, he also has a strong commitment to his local community which he says has seen an amazing transformation over the past 30 years. The dealership provides charitable sponsorships and fundraising, a consistent focus during his 19-year tenure, along with his involvement in several committees and business work groups.

Wyndham’s Darjeelings of morning tea Interest in one of Wyndham’s biggest morning tea fund-raisers was so great this year that organisers had to start a waiting list. About 300 people attended the recent Biggest Morning Tea at the Italian Sports Club of Werribee to raise money for the Cancer Council. The club’s ladies committee, including Connie Fugazzotto, Liliana Donati, Dala Lim, Iole Brunato and Rita Fusco (pictured), has been organising the fund-raisers for seven years. About $9000 was raised this year. The event included raffles and a silent auction. Since 2006, the club has raised almost $50,000.

Ideal if your family’s growing And more good news for dad . . . all the hard work has been done, writes Mark Bunker ne of the reasons this house will be popular with first-time buyers and growing families is that most of the hard work has been done and its position couldn’t be more convenient for access to the grammar schools on Sayers Road. The single-level floorplan is simple and practical; living areas are open and brightly coloured feature walls are found at almost every turn, promoting a pleasant atmosphere. At the front, there’s a lounge with plenty of natural light, a dining room with lowsheen floor tiles and a study with floating
floorboards. The hallway leads to the large family-meals area and a rumpus room at the back which has floating floorboards and a mix of timber and vertical blinds. A sure highlight is the kitchen, which has vinyl-wrap benches providing ample preparation space, a Domani 900mm stainlesssteel cooker, a wide island bench with LG stainless-steel dishwasher, and a walk-in pantry and breakfast bar. Four spacious bedrooms have floating floorboards. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and modern en suite; the remaining three
have built-in wardrobes with mirrored doors. There’s also a modern bathroom. Access to the backyard is either via sliding doors in the rumpus room (which link to a paved patio) or a door in the laundry, which opens to a footpath leading directly to the clothes line. The backyard has white rock landscaping surrounding an elevated garden box planted with agapanthus. There’s also a water feature, and plenty of space for new owners to add their own touches. In addition to easy access to schools, the house is within striking distance of Wyndham
Village and the new Williams Landing railway station.

Home is where The Heartlands is esidents of The Heartlands estate in Tarneit will soon be able to enjoy the eagerly anticipated new wetlands area and residents-only recreation centre. “As one of many projects from award-winning developers Asset1, The Heartlands is one of the few estates in the west that has delivered community facilities early in its development, rather than making residents wait years for promised parklands and infrastructure,” Asset1 sales director Mark Adams said. “The new additions to the community will benefit busy parents and couples looking to combine active lifestyles in their urban environment.” Home owners are counting down the days until the opening of the residentsonly recreational centre, Club Heartlands. Within walking distance of all houses in the estate, the centre has a pool and gym equipment. Club Heartlands, together with jogging tracks, outdoor fitness stations and lookout points throughout the wetlands area provide plenty of places for residents to socialise and keep fit. “We are in the final stages of completing the club and wetlands, including $2 million towards landscaping,” Mr Adams said. “And we’re looking forward to launch celebrations over the coming months.” Blocks of land from 300 to 600 square meters are available to buy and start from $165,000.
For more information on The Heartlands visit the sales office or website or call the team.

CEDAR WOODS, THE DEVELOPER OF WILLIAMS LANDING, SAID LAND SALES IN MAY HAVE BEEN AT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL IN MORE THAN TWO YEARS. Weve had a terrific response since the commencement of the first rail and bus services, and were seeing a diverse mix of families and couples coming from across
Melbourne. Land sales are up considerably since the start of 2013. The month of May has seen the highest sales result in two years, with a total of 42 sales achieved for the month, said Nathan Blackburne, State Manager Cedar Woods. There are few, if any, major land estates whereby purchasers have the ability to walk to an existing train station, bus terminal and future town centre, all within 25 minutes of Melbournes CBD. In addition to the completed transport infrastructure, Williams Landing welcomed the launch of a major new display village.
This training is delivered with Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding. People with disabilities are encouraged to apply. RTO Code: 0590

Councillor Column News from Chaffey Ward
In Wyndham City’s Proposed 2013/14 Budget, $1 million has been set aside for a campaign urging the State Government to address the issue of congestion, both on our roads and on public transport. Unfortunately, this will not be a quick fix, but Council will continue to strongly advocate on behalf of residents. Work on the Wyndham Leisure and Events Centre is progressing well, so make sure you have a look the next time you drive down Derrimut Road. Meanwhile, I was delighted by the recent announcement of $9 million from the Federal Government for the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre. This is another very exciting project for our City. Cr Marie Brittan
News from Iramoo Ward
It’s been just over six months since I was elected to represent Iramoo Ward and things are moving at a hectic pace. There are many issues to consider when making a decision as a Councillor, but most importantly, the effect this decision will have on you, our residents. At recent Council meetings, Councillors have put forward strong arguments about the need to provide infrastructure before development occurs. When voting on whether to approve residential developments, Wyndham City is committed to reinforcing the message to Governments and the relevant planning authorities, that infrastructure must be provided before development occurs in Wyndham. When nights become frosty, they need to be in a warm spot to avoid dangerous colds and pneumonia. Daily diets should include one cup of fresh vegies (not too-frequent lettuce or cabbage) or fruit, constantly replenished grass or hay without chemicals, a handful of good quality grain mix (no seeds) and plenty of water. The mighty Japanese small car racks up more than one million sales a year around the world under its various guises, staking a claim as the global bestseller. “Dependable”, “value” and “reliable” are the usual adjectives applied to this four-cylinder hatchback and sedan range, denoting the strengths that millions of buyers have valued above all else in the Corolla since it was launched in Japan in 1966. Now made in 13 countries and entering its 11th generation, the new Corolla has arrived in Australia with a fresh hatchback body and new spring in its step as it sets about reclaiming its local small-car sales crown from the Mazda3. Toyota has ramped up the fun factor – a bit. You will not find a hot turbo-charged
engine like the Subaru WRX or slick-shifting dual-clutch transmission like the Volkswagen Golf GTI or Ford Focus ST in the latest Corolla hatch. But you will discover a mainstream hatchback that goes, steers, turns and rides like a potential mass-selling champion. We drove the mid-range five-door Corolla Levin SX hatch which, despite its sporty pretensions, comes with the same 103kW 1.8-litre engine as most other Corollas sold in this market. But in place of the optional old four-speed automatic transmission that plugs along in the ageing Corolla sedan and base Ascent hatch, upmarket Corolla hatchbacks such as the Levin SX can now be ordered with a new continuously variable transmission (CVT) that transforms the Corolla experience. Belt-driven CVTs have not always delivered on their promise, droning away with a sound like a slipping clutch. Lately, however, some new-generation CVTs have come to the fore (the new Subaru Forester
springs to mind) with quieter operation, better electronic control and artificial “steps” built into the acceleration to mimic normal transmissions. In the Corolla, it all makes sense. Smooth and efficient, the CVT makes best use of the engine’s low-end torque, propelling the car forward with minimum fuss and surprising alacrity. Because the engine tends to operate in its optimum torque band, less fuel is consumed. At 6.6 litres per 100km on Australia’s official combined fuel consumption test, the CVT-equipped Corolla is one of the most efficient normally aspirated petrol cars in its class, earning a five-star efficiency rating. If the Corolla driver channels Mark Webber, a “sport” transmission mode can be selected with the press of a button on the console, engaging manual-style transmission changes via steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Next to useless, this mode will be tried once by most mystified Corolla owners and promptly dismissed for the gimmick it is.

The new Toyota Corolla looks like being every bit as impressive as its predecessors
Best to stick with the standard “eco” mode, which is not as staid as its moniker would suggest. Neither is the cornering performance of the new Corolla hatch, despite its rudimentary suspension design that includes a cost-saving torsion beam rear end. Toyota engineers have wrung the best out of this set-up, tuning the dampers, springs, steering and tyres as a unified whole to deliver a chassis cohesiveness not far off that of the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus. The electric-assisted power steering is light and easy, although the turning circle is still a bit tight for an urban warrior. The ride is quiet and cruisy, despite lowprofile tyres on 17-inch alloy wheels that come standard with the Levin SX. Inside, high-sided sports seats are cloaked with fetching black and red cloth. Black is the dominant theme in the cabin, from the headliner to the carpets, including the multitude of surfaces ranging from faux carbon fibre trim to the smooth leather of the sports steering wheel. This brings us to the biggest disappointment in an otherwise sterling effort: the dashboard. A mishmash of surfaces, shapes and materials are plastered around the cabin. The air-control knobs are stiff to operate, and other switches look plasticky. But one overlooks this after a while and relaxes into the deeper qualities
of the Corolla – excellent ergonomics, comfy seats, terrific all-round vision and simple-to-use controls. The cabin has nooks and crannies for storage, including large door bins and a generous glove box (although that intrudes on front-seat passenger knee room). Rear-seat space is also a little tight; likewise cargo room in the boot where there is not only a space-saver spare wheel (standard on Levin models) but also hidey holes for odds and ends in an underfloor plastic tray. Standard equipment on this mid-range variant includes manual air-conditioning, reversing camera, Bluetooth streaming and sat-nav with SUNA traffic updates. And the improved, quieter and more nimble Corolla Levin SX is $1100 cheaper, at $23,990 (plus on-road costs) for the six-speed manual and $2000 extra for the CVT version. Stepping up to the Levin ZR adds climatecontrol air-conditioning, keyless start, partleather seats, LED running lights, Bi-Xenon headlights with auto high beam and panoramic sunroof, all for a $4500 premium. It goes without saying that all Corollas come with a bulletproof reputation that, judging from our test, will remain untarnished for another generation. Werribee’s Centurions storm home to tighten hold on third spot IT was a defining moment in the seasons of Werribee Centrals and Geelong West in the Geelong and District Football League Smiths Holden Cup. They sit third and fourth, respectively, and the winner would
break clear of the pack on Queen’s Birthday weekend. The Centurions were switched on from the outset and went on to win by 58 points at Galvin Park on Saturday. They got a dream start, kicking
the first three goals of the match, with ruckman Nathan Lovell and onballer Michael Cassidy producing a scorching start. Cassidy, with his penetrating kicking, and youngster Matty Walsen, finding space on the wings,
out of the game. The Centurions kicked eight goals to one to come out convincing winners and gain a tighter hold on third spot. Scoreboard: Werribee Centrals 20.7 (127) defeated Geelong West 10.9 (69).
proved the difference between the two sides. It was just three goals the difference heading into the fourth quarter, but two quick goals to the Centurions from Scott Rathbone and Brad McNicol took the steam
Bees make quarters in upset win over Vales
Off and running: Beau Bostock and the Glenorden Hawks have been a force this season.
Unbeaten Hawks speeding to finals BY LANCE JENKINSON GLENORDEN is taking the express train to the Western Region Football League division 2 finals. The Hawks have stopped for no one en route to nine wins in as many starts. The likelihood of a repeat of Yarraville-Seddon’s undefeated season last year seems to be increasing by the week. Damien Yze is the recruit of the season to date with a league-leading 58 goals. Dashmir Barolli has been the heartbeat of the midfield for the flag favourites.
Parkside (7-2, second), Wyndhamvale (7-2, third) and new club Manor Lakes (7-2, fourth) lead the chasing pack. Parkside, last year’s bridesmaid, is keen to go one better. After starting the season well, the Magpies faded out against Manor Lakes last round. Wyndhamvale is considered a genuine threat, but its form in blockbuster games is sketchy. Against top-two sides Glenorden and Parkside, the Falcons have booted just 16 goals in eight quarters. Paul O’Shea, a new recruit who was once on the Western Bulldogs’
[ 36 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE June 12, 2013
list, could be the answer with 41 goals in his nine games. Manor Lakes is finally starting to be taken seriously, but it took a dramatic win over Parkside to get the team on the map. The Storm should be lavished with praise for arriving in the WRFL ready to go. A finals berth in its debut season is almost a certainty. Sunshine Heights (6-3, fifth) have enjoyed a bounce-back year after a horror end to life in the top tier. The Heights are two games and percentage clear in fifth spot. It’s difficult to see them relinquishing their position.
There’s a dramatic divide between the top five and the other seven sides, with the finals positions likely to be decided by the halfway mark of the season. Sanctuary Lakes (4-5, sixth) and Braybrook (4-5, seventh) are the most likely to challenge from outside the top five. Caroline Springs (3-6, eighth), Albanvale (3-6, ninth) and West Footscray (3-6, 10th) are too far back and offer no indication of lateseason revivals. North Sunshine (1-8, 11th), which provided a feel-good story by winning its first game since 2008, and Laverton Park will battle it out to avoid the wooden spoon.
WERRIBEE City has moved into the last eight of the Football Federation Victoria men’s state knockout cup. The Bees booked their quarterfinal spot with a shock 1-0 win over Premier League club Pascoe Vale at Hosken Reserve on Saturday. The match was an entertaining affair with a fast-paced brand of football displayed by both sides. Bees goalkeeper Franjo Saric was forced into a number of good saves early on as the Vales pressed. The Bees, coming into the game on the back of a win over Altona Magic in the league, were not without their own chances. Striker Leigh Minopoulos forced Vales goalkeeper Stefaan Sardelic into a diving save and the score was locked 0-0 at the break. The second half was played at the same furious pace, with flankers of both teams creating havoc. The winning goal didn’t come until stoppage time in the second half when Minopoulos was felled in the penalty box and stepped up to score. The Bees will click back into league mode on Sunday when they host Eastern Lions at Galvin Park. In men’s state league 5, Point Cook Jets and Truganina Hornets played a rescheduled game at Saltwater Reserve on Saturday. The Jets prevailed 2-1 on the back of goals to Cameron Mellor and Joe Spiteri. David Dennerley netted for the Hornets. The Jets will host Spring Hills FC at home on Saturday, while the Hornets entertain Sunshine Heights Western Tigers. In men’s state league 4, Hoppers Crossing will face FC Strathmore fresh off a week’s rest in a bottomfour clash at Grange Reserve on Saturday. — Lance Jenkinson
Front runner: The Lions’ Heath Ayres is a key factor in the race for the minor premiership.
Unbeaten Deer Park a match for all the hype BY LANCE JENKINSON DEER Park is the team to beat nearing mid-point of the Western Region Football League division 1 season. The Lions (first, 8-0) have shaken up the top tier and broken up the monopoly that Altona and Spotswood had on the competition. With player-coach Marc Bullen at the helm, the Lions recruited strongly in the off-season, some labelling it a ‘dream team’. The Lions have lived up to the hype, reeling off eight consecutive wins to start the season, including victories over last year’s grand finalists. Kwame McHarg has been outstanding since joining from Williamstown, while Cameron Trewin, Sam Hunt, Chris Stewart and Shaun Harrison regularly figure among the best. The evenness of the Lions is what makes them so dangerous. Taking into account how sparingly
big-name recruits Andrew Lovett and Heath Ayres have been used, the Lions’ roar is only going to louden between now and September. Spotswood (second, 6-2) climbed into second ahead of the break without ever moving into first gear. The Woodsmen will concede their performance against the big guns has been patchy. Back in round one, they lost by just three points to Altona but did so coming back from a 42-point quarter-time deficit. Against Deer Park, they led at three-quarter-time, only to be blown away in the last term. Last start, against Sunshine Kangaroos, they overcame a goalless opening quarter to come back and win. Inconsistency within performance is plaguing the Woodsmen and that has to be fixed if they want to reach a seventh grand final in a row. Michael Fogarty has been in rich form, while Jason Cloke and Dylan Callard have been dangerous in attack.
With an improved team structure from last season, Altona (6-2, third) has what it takes to make it back-toback flags. The Vikings had one area of need, a high-marking centre-halfforward, and found the solution in Jayden Post, who has booted 31 goals and shown an aerial dominance. You hear it all the time: it takes time for an AFL player to get used to the pace of local football, but Post has made a seamless transition. Steven Kennedy, an exciting utility who can be found mopping up across half-back, swooping in the midfield or offering a target across halfforward, is having a stellar year and likely to figure highly in Priest Medal calculations if his form continues. The Vikings’ losses have come against improved sides Deer Park and St Albans; that’s not a concern, just an indication of raised standards across the league. Sunshine (6-2, fourth) have been the surprise packet of the opening
two months. The Kangaroos merely made up the numbers in the finals last season, but you get a sense this team is ready to become a major player. But until the Roos claim a big scalp – they’re 0-2 against top-three sides – they’ll remain in the former category. On Saturday, against Altona, they can send a message to the top sides to start looking over their shoulder. The Kangaroos are strong across all lines and have star power in the Wiggins brothers, Simon and Patrick, and Mitch Hahn. An injury-free run has enabled Patrick Wiggins to realise his potential; he leads division 1’s goalkicking with 32 goals, while Russell Douglas, Hayden Moloney and Scott Smith are having productive seasons. Hoppers Crossing (5-3, fifth) have been up and down like a rollercoaster. The Warriors’ inconsistency is largely to do with an unsettled team, beset with injuries. If that bad luck is confined to the first eight rounds,
there’s no reason why they can’t give the double chance a shake. Recruits Brodie Moles and James Mulligan are starting to produce their best football, and Mathew Ryan, Matthew Smith and Terry Knight have been strong all year. Kade Carey’s health is the concern right now, with the Warriors needing their focal point back on the ground to be a serious contender. St Albans (4-4, sixth) has been a breath of fresh air. The Saints have thrown down the challenge to all the top sides, and even shocked Altona. A five-point, round six loss to Sunshine is their only blemish in the past month. They’re the most credible threat to the sides occupying a topfive berth. Tim Jenkins, a dual Priest medallist, is having another brilliant year for the Saints, as are Lachlan Baddeley, Marc Dawson and Damien Fitzpatrick. Port Melbourne Colts (3-5, seventh) are a finals chance in the mathematician’s eyes only.

A Werribee Tigers promotion
West Wing This week another of the back room team who makes an enormous contribution to our football club and a man I have known all my senior football life. He is Gary McGorlick, our senior Team Manager, or as he is better known around the club, ‘Brutus’. SW. When did you start at Werribee, was it straight after finishing with the Bulldogs? B: In 2005 with Simon Atkins, my last year with the Bulldogs was 2003 and I didn’t have any involvement in 2004. SW: How did ‘Axe’ get you to Werribee? B: He said he wanted a hand and he was a mate. I had sat around for a year just watching footy and thought I would like to get back into it and I thought it would be a bit of fun with Axe. SW: What about your playing days? B: I played my junior footy at Seddon and played in a few underage premierships. I played some under 19s and reserves with the Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs, I went to the Essendon District League with Tullamarine Ascotvale and we won a C Grade premiership. SW: What attracted you to the role of Team Manager? B: I was doing a job for Terry Wheeler (Bulldogs coach) in 1990, a couple of us were given a player to watch, and we had to write reports on the player. Then the reserves team manager job came up and Peter Welsh (Bulldogs Football Manager) asked me if I wanted to do it, and I said yes. SW: Is the role much different now to then? B: It is a lot different from AFL to VFL. The match day role you are really just assisting the coach and making sure the day runs smoothly, so he’s not pulling his hair out and he can concentrate on football. SW: What sort of stuff do you deal with? B: Making sure the meetings are organized, the room is quiet when he wants it to be quiet, who comes in and out of the rooms, getting the players out on time and organizing the post match stuff. SW: Finally where did the nickname Brutus come from? B: Barry Stanfield and Doug Hawkins. The Bulldogs had played a game up on the Gold Coast and it was the last game of the season and they all went out that night. Barry Stanfield had bought a Keno ticket and he went to sleep with it in his hand. When he woke up he wanted to see if he won anything but he couldn’t find the ticket and he reckons I ate it, so after that, they called me Brutus. It’s funny because if I go down to my old cricket club they call me “Lumpy” and the blokes I played with at Footscray like Robbie McGhie, they call me another nickname which is a bit politically incorrect these days. SW: Thanks Brutus.

West ‘humbled’ by AFL Hall of Fame induction WERRIBEE’S win in the VFL capped off a sensational week for Scott West that included induction into the AFL Hall of Fame in Canberra. West played 324 games for the Western Bulldogs and is one of the club’s most decorated players. In a career spanning 16 years, he won seven Charles Sutton Medals, a club record. He was
given All-Australian honours five times, including three in a row from 2004-06. West finished second in the Brownlow Medal count twice, behind Shane Woewodin in 2000 and Adam Goodes in 2006, and was in the top five on three other occasions. “It was a great night – one of those nights where you feel
very honoured, humbled by the occasion and the award,” West said. “I took the family up and it was one of those great nights of footy, a lot of great people and familiar faces. “[Prime minister] Julia Gillard was there and I had a fair bit of anxiety having to speak in front of so much footy royalty, but I was lucky enough to be
announced first and once all that happened I was able to relax.” West was inducted alongside Essendon’s Matthew Lloyd, former Melbourne captain Hassa Mann, WA great Brian Peake, Sturt ruckman Rick Davies, umpire Bryan Sheehan and Richmond’s Royce Hart, who was elevated to Legend status. — Daniel Paproth
Tiger intensity nails Dolphins BY DANIEL PAPROTH A 72-point turnaround gave Werribee its third consecutive VFL win on Saturday, the Tigers climbing to seventh on the ladder with a 39-point win over Frankston. Midway through the second quarter at Frankston Oval, Werribee was trailed the Dolphins by 33 points. But the Tigers roared back into the game with seven of the next nine goals to close the margin to 13 points at the main break. Ben Brown had a mark-of-theyear contender, climbing over his opponent before converting to kick one of his three goals for the afternoon. The third term saw Werribee’s dominance continue, holding Frankston to a single goal as the Tigers slammed home eight to take a 29-point lead into the final break. The Dolphins, a better team this year than their 2-6 record suggests, cut the lead back to 17 points before Ben Warren took a diving mark on the goal line and booted his seventh for the afternoon. He later added his eighth and ninth goals to be best afield as Werribee closed out the game. Tigers coach Scott West lauded his players’ resolve. “Frankston is a very competitive team and they got out of the blocks and got out to a nervous lead,” he said. “But to the boys’ credit they turned it around in the second quarter and went on with it. “Frankston were more intense at the contest than us early. We had to clean up what we were doing and lower our eyes a bit. To be down by 31 points at one stage and win by 38 showed a good resolve from our players.” Scoreboard: Werribee 20.11 (131) d Frankston 14.8 (92)
