panel to rule on council’s bid to limit pokies’ spread “Keeping gambling venues away from areas where people are likely to be more vulnerable is a positive step in reducing gambling-related harm,” he said. “Removing pokies from where people live and go about their lives is likely to reduce the impact of problem gambling on the Wyndham community.” Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation data shows Wyndham’s pokies raised $87.8 million in 2012-13, the eighth-highest figure in the state. \ LAURA LITTLE

to court,’’ he said. “People are very annoyed. I have had calls from a lot of people in recent days asking why the council got away with it.” Mr Beckley said the union was also pushing for the council to sign a memorandum of understanding banning workplace surveillance. He said there were fears about workplace privacy, but the union hoped other councils would not follow in Wyndham’s footsteps and hire private investigators to spy on staff. Ms Thompson has defended her actions, saying she took the steps she believed were necessary to prevent inappropriate workplace behaviour and the misuse of ratepayer resources. “We considered we could not allow wastage of ratepayer funds when staff are not doing the right thing at work,’’ she said. ‘‘We have to draw a line in the sand.” \ LL

More than 100 staff at Wyndham council have unanimously passed a vote of no-confidence in chief executive Kerry Thompson. Australian Services Union members gathered at the council’s Hoppers Crossing depot on October 21 following calls by ASU branch secretary Brian Parkinson for Ms Thompson to be sacked. As reported in the Weekly, Mr Parkinson said Ms Thompson has shown an “appalling lack of judgement” in spending $354,892 to hire a private investigator and fight unfair dismissal claims lodged by five parks and gardens workers who were sacked on the investigator’s word. He also raised concerns about Ms Thompson’s decision to sack supervisor Phillip Leyshan without reading his written response to the investigation. ASU organiser Dave Beckley said more union members would be involved in a vote outside the civic centre tomorrow afternoon before writing to councillors to inform them of the outcome. “It is the opinion of the ASU and its members that had Kerry Thompson read [Mr Leyshan’s] response and investigated the matter properly, there would be no need to go
Gaming venues will be banned from activity centres and shopping strips under new laws being considered by Wyndham council. On Monday night, councillors agreed to ask Planning Minister Matthew Guy to appoint an independent panel to consider an amendment to the Wyndham planning scheme, restricting where gaming venues can be built. linfox reinstates union delegates INDUSTRIAL ACTION
Two Linfox employees who were stood down after speaking to the media about alleged workplace bullying have returned to work. National Union of Workers (NUW) delegates Michael Manolitsis, of Maribyrnong, and Ken Price, of Hillside, were stood down after speaking to the Weekly on October 16 when more than 100 workers protested outside Linfox’s Truganina distribution centre. NUW organiser Matt Toner said the two employees, one of whom is an occupational health and safety representative, returned to work late last week. “The NUW thought that it was outrageous
that the company was going to stand down an OHS rep for speaking out about OHS issues,” he said. “We put the company on notice that we were going to file proceedings in the Federal Court and that brought about a speedy resolution. “The guys have unfortunately been given a warning for speaking out about OHS issues and we’re still not very happy with that, but at least they have their jobs and they’re back at work.” Mr Manolitsis told the Weekly on October 16 that he was speaking out to raise awareness of workplace bullying for all employers. “We don’t accept it in the schoolyard, we don’t accept in the footy fields any more,”
he said. “Why are we accepting it at a workplace?” Linfox group manager Gary Max did not respond to a request for comment in relation to the workers’ reinstatement. In earlier statements, Mr Max said Linfox had “strict processes” for dealing with complaints. He said 700 people worked at the Truganina centre and recent complaints had come from a group of 200 people represented by the NUW. At the protest, the Weekly spoke to numerous male and female workers who said they had been bullied and saw many signed worker statements that are expected to be investigated by WorkCover. \ GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK
learning and laughter ethos earns teacher a gong HOPPERS CROSSING
Sean Stanek believes learning should be a fun experience. The Woodville Primary School teacher carefully plans each of his lessons to ensure there are plenty of activities and experiences for his pupils to learn from and enjoy. Last week, his dedication to making school enjoyable was recognised at the National Excellence in Teaching awards, where he was named one of Victoria’s nine most inspirational educators. Mr Stanek was one of 77 Victorian teachers, including Anne Marie Palmer from Werribee’s St Andrew’s Primary School, to be nominated for the award. The grade 2/3 teacher said he was surprised to be nominated by the school council and parents association, and shocked to discover he had won. “I always work hard for the kids and the school. I get into as many activities as I can for the kids,” he said. Mr Stanek is a finalist in the national awards that will be decided next year. \ LAURA LITTLE
want to share with you an old Irish folk story. Once upon a time, there was a mean old man who liked to play tricks on people. One evening, after a night on the drink, Stingy Jack lost his way on the road home and came across the devil. He tricked the devil into climbing a tree and, once he had him up there, quickly carved a cross on the trunk to trap him. The devil, angry at being tricked, agreed to not claim Stingy Jack’s soul when he died. Stingy Jack, thinking he’d bettered the devil himself, went on his way. Many years later, when Stingy Jack’s time was up, he found himself at the gates of heaven. St Peter refused to let Stingy Jack enter, saying he’d been nasty and miserable on earth and had helped no other soul than his own. Stingy Jack, finding no succour, went downstairs to hell. At the gates of hell, the devil recognised the trickster and also refused him entry, sticking to the bargain he’d made when Stingy Jack had trapped him up the tree. Now scared that he had nowhere to go, he begged the devil to let him in. The devil laughed and threw a coal from the fires of hell at Stingy Jack to make him go away. Now Jack loved his vegetables, especially turnips, so he pulled one out of his pocket, quickly hollowed it out and popped the ember inside. Stingy Jack then spent eternity wandering the netherworld between heaven and hell with his glowing hollow turnip. So, if you’re a fan of the Americanised, modern-day version of Halloween, now you know you have Stingy Jack to thank while carving your Jack O’ Lantern pumpkin. \ EMMA SUTCLIFFE Emma Sutcliffe is a freelance writer. A western suburbs leader is calling on Wyndham councillors to start responding to concerns about their council’s handling of recent issues. Former Hobsons Bay mayor Tony Briffa said Wyndham residents were entitled to believe their councillors were not putting the community’s interests first, after it was revealed the council spent almost $355,000 on a private investigator and hearings at the Fair Work Commission. “Residents are understandably concerned that council has wasted so much money,’’ Cr Briffa said. ‘‘The primary role of a councillor is to represent the community.” Most Wyndham councillors chose not to comment on the issue. Only councillors Intaj Khan and Gautam Gupta have publicly backed Wyndham chief executive Kerry Thompson. Other councillors refused to comment and referred the Weekly to mayor Heather Marcus or the council’s media unit, which issued a statement on Cr Marcus’s behalf saying all councillors fully supported Ms Thompson. \ LL

ach morning Marshall Tuck wakes early, exercises while listening to a podcast of Australian news, then drives 20 minutes from Duhok to his workplace – the Domiz refugee camp in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. The Footscray resident is one of an estimated 274,000 people doing humanitarian work worldwide, according to a 2010 report by the international ALNAP network. The number keeps growing to meet an increasing need.
MARSHALL TUCK Two million registered Syrian refugees live in camps in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt and Turkey, according to the United Nations. The Domiz camp is home to more than 45,000 Syrians who have fled across the border to escape civil war. Tuck, 44, is working for UNICEF and was placed in Domiz through RedR Australia, which provides standby personnel during humanitarian crises. With a background in public health and nursing, Tuck works across UNICEF projects to help children achieve some normalcy. His work includes health promotion, supporting children’s access to basic schooling, raising awareness of child labour, promoting breastfeeding and immunisation, and dealing with water and sanitation issues. Tuck, who has previously worked in Pakistan after the 2010 floods and in South Darfur in Sudan, says conditions in the northern Iraqi camp are particularly difficult. “Over recent summer months, temperatures have consistently reached over 40 degrees,” he says. “There is something about the weather here that creates sudden whirlwinds that can rip through the camp and blow dust through sections of it.” The searing summer heat will slowly give way to a bitterly
A CALL TO HELP Whether it’s working in a refugee camp or volunteering at an orphanage, humanitarian work can have mutual benefits, writes Tegan Forder
SARAH IRELAND Save the Children’s humanitarian manager Sarah Ireland says that although humanitarian workers face challenges including cultural barriers, access restrictions and security risks, being an aid worker is extremely rewarding. “It has enabled me to work in some very interesting places around the world, but most importantly to make a significant difference to people whose lives have been turned upside down,” she says. Save the Children, an emergency relief and development
organisation, has hundreds of humanitarian workers in 120 countries. Ireland says the team, which has an office in Melbourne, comprises passionate people who work to secure a child’s right to health, education and protection. “Our aid workers carry out a range of roles while deployed across the globe, from distributing bread to Syrian refugees in Jordan to managing multiorganisational responses to massive disasters. Humanitarian workers often work in high-pressure situations when lives are on the line,” she says. “They must work quickly and under pressure to ensure children and families are protected from danger.”
SELIN KASIF A few months ago 16-year-old Selin Kasif was standing under the Zambian sun painting dormitory walls white. It was a far cry from sitting in the comfort of her air-conditioned classroom at Overnewton Anglican Community College in Keilor. But being in Zambia is a dream realised for the student who had spent years trying to convince her mother to let her go to the Chibobo Orphanage. Run by the Help Ministries Project, the orphanage has strong ties with Overnewton College – volunteers from the school visit the orphanage most years. The Taylors Lakes resident saved more than half the money needed for the self-funded trip and eventually her mother couldn’t say no. Kasif headed off with seven students, three former collegians, two parents and three staff members on a three-week trip to the village of Chibobo. Flying into the Zambian capital Lusaka, Kasif was surprised at its touristy nature but signs of poverty became more evident as they travelled deeper into the rural areas. “We got pulled over by the cops a lot because we had a lot
cold winter. The refugees have only tents for protection while dealing with the trauma of civil war. “They are dealing with the unimaginable loss of their homes, having their livelihoods destroyed, financial loss, and family members’ whereabouts uncertain,” Tuck says. The supply of resources from the humanitarian community and governments in response to the crisis remains stretched. Despite the drawbacks, Tuck says life continues as normally as it can in the tent city. “There’s a range of small businesses scattered throughout the camp selling all sorts of items including food like delicious shawarma, falafels and kebabs. These shops are a good place to meet people, practise my Kurdish and Arabic and to support the community who have lost so much in fleeing their homes.” These are some of the bright spots for Tuck, who feels he is “juggling balls at times to keep things progressing”. “When things get negative or frustrating with things moving slower than expected, I am reminded and buoyed by the resilience of the Domiz camp residents around me. “Whatever I have to deal with pales in comparison to what the residents have had to contend with.”
of suitcases in the back of the bus. One time we had to wait for about an hour and there was a girl sitting on this dusty truck counting to 10 – she was expecting us to give her money because of what she’d achieved. “It made me feel embarrassed about how I live my life. Before going there I used to think ‘what do I need? I need a phone, I need this …’ Now I think I have everything compared to what these kids have.” Kasif and the group lived at the orphanage, which houses 63 children from the ages of two to 19. “We taught them the Nutbush but we kept messing it up and they got it in 30 seconds, which was pretty embarrassing for us,’’ she says. “I hope to go back there one day and to other places in Africa. It was just a great experience and I enjoyed it because I was making a difference in their lives and they were making a difference in mine.” \ firstname.lastname@example.org OCTOBER 30, 2013 \ WYNDHAM WEEKLY 13
rail link bridge opens The first major grade separation of the Regional Rail Link project is complete, with a road-over-rail bridge at Tarneit open to traffic. The Tarneit Road bridge, opened on Monday, eliminated the need for a proposed level crossing next to the new Tarneit railway station. cafe culture a crafty idea Confirmed bachelor Fred Pierce is a hit with the ladies at a Werribee sewing circle, but at 94 he’s still a catch waiting to be landed. Uncle Fred, as he’s known to the craft makers at the new Quilters Cafe, accompanies his niece and carer Bromwyn Small to weekly quilting sessions. “It’s about companionship as much as sewing,” Mrs Small says. Mr Pierce explains his single status simply: “I was always too fast for the girls to catch me, but I enjoy chatting to these girls”. The Pyke Street cafe is the brainchild of Werribee sisters Lesley Ward and Jill Wilson. “I love the atmosphere [of holding craft classes in a cafe]; it’s like entertaining at home,” Ms Wilson says. \ SUE HEWITT

ICE PUTTING KIDS ON skids Drug-fuelled violence against emergency services and community workers has prompted calls for greater action to tackle a growing ice epidemic. Youth worker Les Twentyman said the state government must do more to protect frontline workers such as police, paramedics and youth workers from the dangers of violence from ice users. He wants outreach workers to receive more training and more secure drug rehabilitation clinics. “There is a hidden victim in this and that is the young kids who are subjected to ice-affected parents,” he said. “It’s just a massive cost to everyone. The other thing is there’s no treatment. We get about three calls a day, but we can’t send them anywhere for treatment.” Ambulance Employees Association secretary Steve McGhie said the problem had been underestimated and more outreach workers needed to get into schools to educate about the drug’s dangers. “Once ice takes over an individual, these people on ice have no idea what they’re doing. They’re completely off their face, they get very aggressive, very strong; they become so dangerous, they become so irrational,” he
said. “We have to start getting on top of this epidemic because if we don’t it will take over local communities, in particular our youth. Then we’re going to be in desperate trouble.” Paramedic Danny Hill said ice users tend to be surging with adrenaline and often looking for a fight. “They will see paramedics or police as being authority and they just want to take them on. They’ve got no fear of repercussions, no fear of being hurt and they can be very, very strong.” Mr Hill said many paramedics now won’t arrive at a callout until they are sure enough police will be there to guarantee safety. “Ice has certainly taken over where I work in Werribee. It has become more of a problem than heroin or marijuana were in the past,” he said. “There’s no way we can do our job safely while people are so fired up and aggressive.” Footscray, Sunshine, Braybrook, Werribee, Deer Park and St Albans were all identified as hotspots, where users as young as 13 or 14 were being “captured” by ice. “They just don’t realise just how badly it can grab hold of your life and change it quite quickly. We really need to try and understand the drug better, try to identify who is going to have a problem with it and try to educate them earlier.” \ BENJAMIN MILLAR
hairy truths from manipulated mouths
Tarneit actor Tim Maloney readily admits he had a hand in being upstaged by something resembling Cookie Monster in his latest performance. In fact, he had both hands in it, as a puppeteer working Trekkie Monster. Maloney also provides the hairy creature’s speaking and singing voices in musical comedy Avenue Q. The show, which he says is Sesame Street for adults, explores coming-of-age issues. Maloney, 37, says it took five months to learn how to work life-size puppets Trekkie (right) and green-faced Nicky. “The puppets can do and say things that humans can’t,” he says. Avenue Q will be at the Geelong Performing Arts Centre on November 1, 2, 8 and 9. \ SH

news happy beyond words
A single mother and court reporter from Laverton has had her debut poetry collection – with painted illustrations by her 11-year-old daughter – picked up by Apple iBooks. Jennifer Simmonds, whose daughter Gabrielle is in grade 5 at Seabrook Primary School, said their book titled Just Words delved into dark secrets hidden behind the doors of suburbia. But she said her book was also about hope and joy, and proved that an older single mum from Laverton could do anything. Ms Simmonds said she drew inspiration from life and the court system where she works three days a week. “I just think I got tired of not saying what some of life is really like,” she said about her motivation to write. “People are always putting on faces and fronts and facades, but you don’t know what goes on behind the closed doors or how somebody’s feeling when they’re smiling”. “No one knows anybody’s story. Don’t judge because you don’t know.” Ms Simmonds said she also hoped that by publishing a book, she would inspire others to tap into their talent. “Everybody has got some sort of talent or some sort of gift. Gabrielle’s artwork has been recognised with awards from Altona’s Bayside Festival and the Royal Melbourne Show. \ GD
Werribee is in line to host the second world championships of international wheelchair handball. But while the event is not until 2015, time is running out. Wyndham disability support worker Wayne Slattery (pictured) has only two months to gain support for the event and present a submission to the International Wheelchair Handball Federation. Slattery, part of the nine-member Australian team that came fourth in the recent world championships in Brazil, says he’s already spoken to the state government but has just a short time to lobby various bodies for support. Wheelchair Handball Australia will have to raise about $300,000 to host the October 2015, championships, arrange accommodation and meet other costs for 200 international players and 40 support staff. “It would be a bonus for Werribee, putting the area in the international spotlight,” Slattery said. He said the Werribee Sports and Fitness Centre on Ballan Road, undergoing a multimillion-dollar redevelopment, would be an ideal venue with its basketball courts used for the handball competition. Three of Australia’s nine team members who competed in Brazil came from Werribee, where the Werribee Wheelers train regularly. New members are welcome. \ SUE HEWITT » 0408 583 723

With fresh paint and new carpets, this well-maintained house with four bedrooms will feel like new when the next owners move in. The main bedroom, which is separate from the others, has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe. The remaining bedrooms have built-in robes and share the bathroom and separate toilet. The laundry has outdoor access, while the kitchen and open-plan living zones, including a family-meals space and rumpus room, form the hub of the house. A carpeted lounge room is at the front. A 900mm stainless-steel cooker and ample storage and bench space are handy kitchen additions. Included are a split-system, central heating, low-maintenance, landscaped gardens and a double garage. Childcare and primary and secondary schools are nearby, as are Wyndham Village and Hogans Corner shopping centres, Point Cook Town Centre and Kiah Reserve. \
This rendered house is ready to be enjoyed from the moment new owners grab the keys, although the corner block provides much potential to add further value through development. Three bedrooms share an updated bathroom. There’s a formal lounge, renovated kitchen with updated cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and adjoining meals area, and a separate rumpus/kids’ play area. Ducted heating and cooling are in place. A sure highlight is the outdoor entertainment area. The backyard is mostly paved in concrete and contains two sheds and a small child-friendly lawn. There’s also extensive Colorbond fencing and a concreted side yard, which would benefit from the new owner adding gates and creating side access for a boat or caravan. The 584-square-metre property is close to schools, shops and transport. \

he Victorian Coroners Court reported 37 drowning deaths last year. With families about to begin the pool season, the importance of learning to swim and understanding water safety cannot be underestimated, say the managers of Werribee Olympic Outdoor Pool (WOOP), Leonie Shaw and Kristy Manton. “Our affordable swimming lessons are delivered by qualified staff following a Royal Life Saving-designed program,’’ Manton says. “It teaches children not only how to swim but also water safety procedures and what to do if the child gets in trouble or witnesses someone else in trouble. “Designed for beginners, whether baby, child or adult, the program requires a pass on each level before moving on to the next.” The 50-metre heated pool, open year-round with extended hours from November 1 to April 30, has a heated learn-to-swim/toddler pool covered by shade sails. During summer, the facility offers: ■ Swim and Survive Learn to Swim Program ■ for six-month-olds to adults. Enrol now and get a free pair of goggles, ■ Aqua exercise, ■ ■ SuperSplash birthday parties, ■ ■ SuperSplash school holiday programs, ■ ■ Mothers group programs. ■
The pool is supervised following Royal Life Saving guidelines at all times and operates under the Watch Around Water Program designed to keep children under five safe while playing in water – children must be within arm’s reach of an adult at all times. This year, out-of-water exercise programs including boot camps, Heart Foundation walking groups, Heartmoves, and a training program for older adults are also on offer. These will be conducted by staff who are qualified in fitness and gym work. Shaw says it’s the WOOP team that makes the facility so special. “Most are local or returning past residents and all are passionate about the industry they work in and the programs they deliver,’’ she says. “A good example is one of our lifeguards, Stuart Mason, who has worked with us for more than 10 years and knows most of the facility-users on a first-name basis.” Circle December 15 in the diary for a kids’ Christmas party, and January 10 for a free community open day. \

Carpenters and bricklayers are just two of the trades expected to be in short supply. Director of MultiSkills Training in Werribee, Lionel Skinner, says the certificate II: pre-apprenticeship (carpentry and bricklaying) that his organisation is offering soon will be very timely. “Students undertaking this course will also have the chance to gain their plant tickets [see sidebar], valuable additions to their skill base and accreditation that many employers require,” says Skinner.
“The first course starts on January 27, so we encourage anyone interested to sign up now.” MultiSkills Training provides a wide range of quality programs to the public and to industry and corporate clients. The service provides leading practices in vocational education and training, says Skinner, along with an exceptional customer focus and building strong partnerships. “Quality service is fundamentally important to MultiSkills Training. In order to meet industry, employer and employee needs, we offer flexible on-site services for most of our courses at times to suit clients. “Staff can also assist in tailoring training programs to suit students’ needs.” The MultiSkills Training crew are professional

Volkswagen Beetle What is it? Like an old rock star; larger, squishier, quieter. What’s in it? A turbocharged and supercharged 118-kilowatt 1.4-litre with a seven-speed DSG gearbox. Is it thirsty? I used 9.8 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 6.7 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.4. $36,487
DRIVE AWAY Thumbs up Handling, ride, body integrity.
Thumbs Down It’s flamboyant but not cool any more, and it costs too much.
* These are manufacturer’s list prices.
Things you didn’t know about motoring … The original Beetle was in production for 58 years with more than 21 million made. It was voted the fourth most significant car in history after Ford’s Model-T, the Mini and Citroen’s DS.

Decanter \ Ben Thomas gets bubbly
love Champagne. I could drink it every day but, at $50 for a bottle of the cheapest decent bottle and upwards of $400 for the most exclusive examples, it’s a luxury rather than habit. Fortunately, you don’t need a king’s ransom to drink like a monarch because there’s a load of options that taste as good as many Champagnes, especially the cheaper ones, at much lower prices. From Australia and New Zealand to European nations that use grapes indigenous to their regions, there’s a world of bubbles worth a try.

Prosecco is a grape, not a region. That’s why the wineries of Victoria’s King Valley, where it has found an excellent home, can label their wines as prosecco. Prosecco’s roots are in Italy’s north-east near Veneto. The best examples come from around Valdobbiadene. Rather than undergoing a secondary fermentation in the bottle to develop its bubbles, Prosecco is also a grape that benefits from a different type of carbonation, the charmat method. In this process, secondary fermentation occurs in big tanks before bottling – a cheaper process that there’s helps retain prosecco’s fresh, fruity characters. a world

import delivers on time baseball
In one heads-up play, Chad Northcott showed why the Werribee Giants were so keen to allocate a spot to the import this season. The 24-year-old Canadian drew on every bit of his experience to make a decisive move with the game on the line to secure a thrilling 5-4 win over the Berwick City Cougars in the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 at President’s Park on Saturday. With two outs and trailing by a run in the ninth, the Cougars had the game-tying runner on first and the go-ahead batter on board, but the base-runner made a fatal error of drifting too far off the bag and a quick-thinking Northcott issued a pick off at first for the instant kill. “I’m not sure what the base-runner was doing, but he was quite a fair way off the base; we picked him off and the game was over,” Giants coach Phil Balzer told the Weekly. The Giants had to stave off a late challenge after leading for most of the game. Their three-run advantage was in danger with the persistent Cougars chipping away with runs in the seventh and ninth. But the Giants, who improved to 2-1 with back-to-back wins after their horror start, held on to inflict the Cougars’ first defeat of the season. “It was a big challenge and in a tight game we held on strong,” Balzer said. The Giants were on the wrong end of the hit count – 12 to seven – but made up for it

with a superior pitch selection. They received a massive eight walks for the game because of their willingness to wait for the right pitch. “They worked the counts well,” Balzer said. Shortstop Wade Balzer had a day out. Sizzling in the field and confident at bat, Balzer finished with two hits, two walks and three RBIs. He has been a driving force of the Giants’ defence, which has been error-free over two games after an opening-day disaster. “We’re pretty solid; our defence has tightened up so much,” Phil Balzer said. “In that first game, we made a heap of errors and we haven’t made even one since.” Young starting pitcher Wes De Jong struggled for command but reached his pitch limit with the concession of just two runs in four innings. “He wasn’t as sharp as he was the previous week but he battled through,” Balzer said. “Conceding two runs against a team that had been undefeated and was scoring an average of nine runs a game, it was a pretty good effort.” Northcott was solid closing out the game. The Giants face the defending champion Williamstown Wolves in a western derby at Greenwich Reserve on Saturday. Balzer said there might be no tougher opponent for his side to face this season. “Williamstown will probably be the team to beat,” he said. \ Lance Jenkinson firstname.lastname@example.org

league adds a division in bid to even things up The Western Region Football League will expand to three divisions in 2014, a move prompted by the arrival of two new clubs – Werribee Districts, from the VAFA, and start-up club Tarneit. The WRFL board’s decision to create a third tier was to bridge the gulf between sides at the top and bottom of the respective divisions. Last season was a case in point. The second division finalists were decided a long way out from the end of the home-and-away rounds and rendered a lot of games meaningless, while the top sides in division 1 had their annual beat-up of the side that would eventually be relegated. “As part of the 2010-13 strategic plan, one of the six key issues raised was the evenness of the competition,” WRFL football operations manager David Newton said. “By moving to three divisions, it is anticipated the imbalance of recent years will be reduced significantly.” The 2014 season will begin with two divisions before splitting into three after each side has played each other once. From round 14 onwards, the league will have 10 teams in division 1, eight in division 2 and six in division 3. There will be no promotion-relegation between division 2 and 3 at the end of next season, but both leagues will have a final four and premiership spoils on offer. The all-important draft fixture will come out mid-November. \ LJ

centurions in pain as another close one slips away vtca
Two gut-wrenching close losses to start the season have put Werribee Centrals behind the eight ball in the Victorian Turf Cricket Association north A1. The Centurions were in a position of power against St Albans at Kings Park Reserve on Saturday, but late heroics from Saints tailenders Jesse Stafrace and Andrew Pizaro in a 40-run 10th wicket partnership saw the home side steal the show. Centurions secretary Chris Duffin said two narrow defeats – a two wicket margin to Aberfeldie in the opener and an agonising two runs to St Albans – could have a significant impact on their season. “You can’t accept close losses if you want to stay up in north A1,” he said. “Two losses

Home is where the heart is for Werribee in the Bowls Victoria division 1. The Bees play their artificial surface at Chirnside Park so confidently that skip Snowy Barker believes his side should go undefeated on home turf this season. “We probably shouldn’t lose a game at home,” he said. “It’s a different surface to the grass at other clubs.” The Bees took full advantage of a hesitant Richmond Union to win 105-69 in a canter on Saturday. It was no ordinary Union side either; it arrived at Watton Street holding down top spot and with an undefeated record. “They’re going to be a top four side – no doubt about it,” Barker said of the visitors. “I just think the difference was our ability to handle the carpet. “Like we keep telling the blokes, at home we shouldn’t drop a game. It will be a major loss if we do and we’re happy to keep that pressure on ourselves.” All four rinks got up for the Bees in a whitewash. Mick O’Neill’s foursome had the biggest win on the day by 15 shots. Jayden Christie played third for O’Neill and continues to make an impression at age 14. “He’s coming on in leaps and bounds,” Barker said. “The kids come up and play as 10, 11, 12 and 13 year olds, but the penny drops when they’re 14. They learn all about the control and the hand-eye co-ordination, and their concentration just totally changes. “He’s going to represent the Victorian under-18s in the singles next month against Tassie, and he won a gold medal in the pairs recently in Perth.” The Barker and Rob Panton rinks finished five up. Peter Ware, installed as skip to have a steadying influence over his crew, won on a dramatic final end. “He’s a past club champion and been here and done that at the club for 30-odd years,” Barker said. “We put him in as skip to steady the ship. They were down by two and he had
“Our bowlers are a bit underdone ... it’s not excuses, but it is reflected that when they’re up and running they’re very capable of bowling sides out,” Duffin said. The Centurions will be desperate to get into the winners’ circle when they host St Francis de Sales at Galvin Park in a two-dayer beginning on Saturday. In west B1, Wyndhamvale had a massive innings and 40-run win over Beaumaris. It was the club’s first win since its arrival in the VTCA. The Falcons shared the workload, with Adam Walls (2-3 and 7-14), Chris Plummer (4-17), Luke Dennerley (60) and new skipper Andrew Ford (48) the keys. Point Cook won on first innings away to Sunshine YCW, but Seabrook was heavily beaten by newcomer Newport-Digman. \ LJ

The Sanctuary Lakes Foundation annual golf day is on Friday at the Sanctuary Lakes Golf Club. The initial aim of the foundation was to provide financial help to elite young golfers at the club. That aim has since broadened to provide support for junior development across all sports in the western suburbs. “We’ve supported golfers, tennis players, footballers, soccer players and athletes,” foundation chairman Kevin Halsted said. “One of our previous success stories is Stacey Keating, a talented young golfer who, with our support, was able to transition to become a professional.” The golf day raised over $22,000 in 2012 and the foundation is hoping to pass that mark this year. \ LJ OCTOBER 30, 2013 \ WYNDHAM WEEKLY 37
Werribee claimed one of its most desired scalps in a 55-run blitz of arch-rival Altona in an east-west group showdown at Chirnside Park on Saturday. The Tigers will proudly retain the Paul Jenkins Shield for the third season running. It’s a prized possession captain Travis Dean was thrilled to keep his hands on. “Paul has been around our club for a fairly long time so it’s good to win something that is named after one of the club legends,” Dean said. “He’s somebody I’m pretty close to and have known most of my life.” The Tigers held all the aces from the moment Tim O’Brien arrived at the crease on day one. He produced a magnificent 122 not out to lead the hosts to a commanding 5-262. The A’s’ run chase on the second day struggled to gain traction. A’s skipper Shane Jones top-scored with 60 from the middle order, but he was offered a lifeline when on a duck. “We dropped two catches and one of them was Jones on a duck, which would’ve killed the game well and truly just before tea,” Dean said. The A’s, widely tipped to make a deep run in the finals, battled on to post 207. They just couldn’t handle the bowling of Tigers’ new recruit Heath Pritchard, who finished with 5-49. “At one stage, he had bowled nine overs and taken 1-1,” Dean said. “They couldn’t hit him and didn’t look to score off him, so he just ate them up. He put the ball in the right areas and they were happy to keep pushing it back.” The Tigers, who have started the season 2-0, visit unbeaten Roxburgh Park-Broadmeadows in a top-of-the-ladder one-day clash at Lakeside Drive Reserve on Saturday. \ LANCE JENKINSON email@example.com

They face a much sterner test on the road against Yarraville Club in a two-dayer starting on Saturday but can take heart from the fact they were the only side to trip up the Clubbers on their home turf last summer. “It’s always a tough assignment, but the boys are looking forward to it,” McNamara said. “You have a look at that order with [Aaron] Mato, [Adam] Contessa and [Justin] Baker – they’re all quality players and if they click, they can make a big score.” \ LJ
