Workmates Ben Cunningham, 32, of Werribee, and Marco Quiroz, 33, of Seaholme, will trek 30 kilometres through the Dandenong Ranges to raise money for youth programs. It’s the second time Mr Cunningham has competed in the challenge, staged to honour the Kokoda spirit of courage, mateship, endurance and sacrifice. Mr Quiroz is taking part for the first time. Veterans from the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association will watch the October 27 challenge. Money raised will fund the Kokoda Challenge youth program, which helps 15 to 18-year-olds build resilience, self-esteem and life skills. “I’m a big supporter of youth and charity, and want to see kids get away from the television and computer games and get outdoors to be healthy,” Mr Quiroz said. \ SUE HEWITT

here are some adventurous people around this old town. On Thursday, spare a thought for a group of walkers from Werribee Rotary Club who are walking 200 kilometres to raise funds for the palliative care unit at the Royal Children’s Hospital. The fact that we need a palliative care unit for children is sad enough, but these guys have a local reason to pull on their hiking boots. Many readers will remember Mitchell Harrower, the beautiful Werribee lad who left us in 2008, succumbing to the rare disease Niemann-Pick type C. Little Mitchell was only seven years old. His mum Liat and the good folks of Werribee Rotary have been doing this amazing Bear Grylls-type event for four years, each time raising tens of thousands of dollars for the RCH. Starting in Bonnie Doon, the group will spend nine days putting one foot in front of the other, including walking through Trawell and from Werribee to the Royal Children’s Hospital. On October 19, they’ll hit Werribee Plaza to rattle a few tins and share stories of their escapades with shoppers before heading back to the Bridge Hotel on Watton Street for a well-earned pot and parma. What happens then? Well, in the poetic words of a walker from last year: We thank all our supporters All those who showed they cared For the little ones who need our love Whose dreams have now been shared We did it for the children; with thanks we do not seek And now we must go to bed. Don’t wake me for a week. \ EMMA SUTCLIFFE Emma Sutcliffe is a Little River-based freelance writer.

Wyndham steps up for A better LIFESTYLE HEALTH
Wyndham residents are being urged to hit the pavement for 30 minutes each day as part of a new campaign to improve the city’s health. The Why I Walk campaign is part of a state and federal government initiative that aims to improve the health of residents in 12 areas of Victoria, including Wyndham. Launching the campaign on Monday, state Health Minister David Davis said people could take simple steps to change their lifestyle. “It might just be walking to work, or it might be adding a little bit more fruit or vegetables in your diet. “[The campaign] is a very simple step to improve the health of people. No one thing on its own will obviously make the change.” Latest health data from 2011-12 shows that more than half of Wyndham residents are overweight or obese. A total of 40 per cent of adults and 57 per cent of children do less than 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Cr Bob Fairclough said Wyndham residents needed to get moving for the sake of their long-term health. “I’m proud to get behind this campaign – walking is free, easy and great for all ages and fitness levels.” \ LL

Salvation Army social justice worker Judith Sutcliffe registered for Monday’s community forum in the hope the state government would help her to help families in need. She told Premier Denis Napthine and Housing Minister Wendy Lovell that Wyndham had a major social welfare problem. Ms Sutcliffe (pictured) said 33 per cent of households were experiencing mortgage stress, while 90 families a month were being evicted from their houses because they were behind on their mortgage or rent. “We have to turn away 17 to 20 families a week at the food service,” she said. “I had a mother with two kids come to me who [was facing eviction] because she is behind in her rent. There is no crisis accommodation in Wyndham.” Ms Sutcliffe asked Ms Lovell why a crisis accommodation plan presented to the government last year by Wyndham council and welfare organisations had not received funding. Ms Lovell said she was aware of the proposal, but the government didn’t have the money to fund crisis accommodation in Wyndham. “We do have limited resources. We have to make sure we help those most in need.” \ LL
bus and trains timetables needed to be better aligned. “[Public Transport Victoria] is going from region to region by aligning bus and train timetables,’’ he said. ‘‘All I can say is it is a recurrent funding issue. Mr Mulder said the government had made “a number of significant investments” in local roads and was preparing a business case for the duplication of Dohertys Road in Laverton North. \ LAURA LITTLE

Wyndham families are being urged to consider opening their hearts and homes to children in desperate need. UnitingCare Werribee Support and Housing is calling for more families and single people to sign up as foster carers and give children a loving home. The organisation runs the Bridges program, which provides care for children and people aged up to 18 who are unable to live with their parents. Earlier this year, Werribee Support
and Housing revealed it was turning away referrals for children in need because of a chronic shortage of carers. Youth services co-ordinator Jo Dumesny said the service had eight registered carers in Wyndham but was in need of dozens more. anxiety – and people shouldn’t think it “goes with the territory”. Research by the National Ageing Research Institute suggests between 10 and 15 per cent of older people living in the community experience depression. Research also shows that a quarter of older people wrongly think depression is a normal part of ageing; more than two-thirds believe it’s embarrassing to admit to having depression; and significantly fewer Australians over 65 recognise depression as a major mental health issue compared with younger people. These figures highlight the importance of raising awareness among older people about the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and making seniors aware that their GP can advise on treatments. When you’re older, you can be more likely to develop depression and anxiety because of physical health problems, loss of independence and self-worth, loss of relationships and social isolation. DISMAY at WYNDHAM PAP, SEX DISEASE RATES HEALTH
Wyndham has the lowest rate of pap screening among women living in Melbourne’s west. According to new statistics, it also has soaring numbers of sexually transmitted infections. Figures from Women’s Health West, released as part of a four-year plan to improve sexual health in the west, show that less than half of women aged 20 to 69 in Wyndham had a pap test in the three years to 2011, with the city recording the lowest screening rates in the western suburbs for women aged between 25 and 69. Across the west, the average screening rate for all women was 53 per cent. In Wyndham, 49.3 per cent of women were tested from 2009-11. Wyndham also recorded the secondhighest rates of chlamydia and gonorrhoea cases in the western suburbs during 2011. The city had 521 cases of chlamydia, up from 287 in 2008, and 58 notifications of gonorrhoea, up from 34. Women’s Health West chief executive Robyn Gregory (pictured) said the west was lagging behind the rest of the state on a range of sexual and reproductive health indicators. “Sexually active young people are less

A Werribee teacher who claims he was intentionally allocated classes of a school’s “most unruly and challenging” students is suing the state government. Peter Doulis, 47, of West Yarraville, claims he suffered psychological illness after he was repeatedly forced to teach the most difficult classes of students while working at Werribee Secondary College. Representing Mr Doulis on the first day of a Supreme Court trial in which the teacher is suing the Victorian government for negligence and failing to provide a safe workplace, John Richards said his client suffered from depression, anxiety and stress as a result of unfair workloads. He said Mr Doulis was subjected to bullying by other teachers between 1998 and 2004 and had also been exposed to deadly asbestos fibres following a fire at the school. The trial before Justice Timothy Ginnane is expected to last four weeks. It will call 42 witnesses, including psychiatrists, GPs and western suburbs principals and teachers. \

Violet Gray is only six, but already she’s showing what a big sister does when her younger brother faces a serious illness – she acts. The Iramoo Primary School pupil is raising funds to help find a cure for the type 1 diabetes that causes her brother, Ethan, 3, to have daily insulin injections. His condition, diagnosed earlier this year, can have dire consequences, as Violet saw a few weeks ago when a routine case of gastroenteritis led to him being hospitalised because of his insulin levels. Violet will take part in this year’s Walk to Cure Diabetes with her mother, Tania Gray, 27, grandmother Susan Wesson, 49, and great-grandmother Rhoda Primrose, 70. The walk is around Albert Park Lake on October 20 to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. “I would like to find a cure for this disease and that would mean I helped my brother get better,” Violet said. “I personally hope to raise $500 and Team Ethan, as we call ourselves, is halfway towards our goal of $2000.” \ SUE HEWITT » http://bit.ly/17PODz3

young driver races towards a dream WERRIBEE
Anton De Pasquale kept to the speed limit in his recent driving licence test but admits it wasn’t easy. The 18-year-old racing driver is used to driving at speeds up to 250km/h and has been behind the wheel of Australian Formula Ford Championship cars for two years. He’s the current series leader. The Werribee student hopes to take things to a higher level as Australia’s only representative in the FIA (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) Institute Young Driver Excellence Academy’s Asia-Pacific selection event in Sydney from October 20-23. De Pasquale will compete for a spot in the European academy where young drivers are taught to become professional racers. The year 12 Westbourne Grammar School student says his dream is to take the podium where his hero, Australian Formula 1 driver Mark Webber, has stood. “I love the thrill of competing at high speed ... it gives me an adrenalin rush.” \ SUE HEWITT

teens hurl rocks at cars
A young woman claims a brazen group of teenagers threw rocks at her car near Werribee police station, damaging her windscreen. The university student, who did not want to be named, said she was driving to her part-time retail job in Werribee about 11.30am on September 26 when she saw three boys and a girl throwing rocks at cars ahead of her. She switched from the left lane to the right to try to avoid them. “It was too late. I copped a rock right in front of me and it put a hole in my windscreen,” she said. The woman, 19, said she rang triple-0 to alert police. She was surprised the youths were throwing rocks so close to a police station. Her mother, who also didn’t want to be named, said the youths had put her daughter’s life at risk. “What if the rock had gone through the windscreen? The hole it left is in line with my precious, irreplaceable daughter’s head,” she said. “What if she’d panicked and swerved, hit a tree, or another car. You are old enough to know better and know right from wrong.” Werribee’s Acting Sergeant Julie Prenc was

still a champ Lester Ellis is fighting to help others change their lives, writes BEN CAMERON
t’s both a gym and a wander through the glory years of a man’s life. Inside the tiny room within the grand Taylors Hill home, among the gym equipment and punching bags, mementos from his halcyon days line the walls: images of a champion, framed articles charting the path of the boxer who became a nation’s hero at just 19. If the Lester Ellis Fitness Academy had a waiting room, this would be it. Suddenly, the former king arrives nursing a cup of morning coffee. “Sorry for keeping you waiting, I’ve just woken up,” he says, a little bleary eyed, offering a hand. His grasp is firm but not the white knuckle variety you’re expecting from a former world champion. These days, 10 years after his final fight, Lester Ellis is knocking blokes into shape, rather than knocking them out, at his home-based fitness school. And today he’s going to teach the Weekly a lesson. “I’ll get you on the pads and I’ll see what you’re capable of,” he says, taking a long slurp of his coffee. The Weekly nervously inquires what kind of shape he’s in under his blue hoodie and jeans. “Even though I’m not fit, I could box three rounds because I know how to relax, I don’t waste any energy,” he says. “When I was goin’, it was 15 rounds, yeah? I fought that three or four times, 15 rounds and, mate, it’s a long way. “Boxing isn’t so much a sport, it’s life and death. If you’re unfit you can be killed.” We step outside to strap on the gloves. The Ellis patio boasts a standard-sized boxing ring, with three boys following in their legendary father’s footsteps. You couldn’t expect anything less, really. “Righto, let’s have a quick warm up,” Lester says, ducking his head as he slides between the ropes. This five-time world champion has fought allcomers over the years, from fellow boxers and the booze to his own demons, but to watch him dart about the ring is to see a spirit renewed.
He hands over a pair of yellow boxing gloves and we “I come out and I thought, bloody hell, how good was that? “shape up”, as they say, but the champ quickly realises he’s Eight years later I ended up being a world champion.” got his work cut out. After an awkward combination of jabs The next lesson is all about evading the knockout and wonky uppercuts it becomes apparent the Weekly’s left punches, and Lester’s dodged a few in his 48 years. While many people train on sporting fields, Lynden Bullard and his walking mates do their best work inside Werribee Plaza. The 1.8-kilometre circuit through the shopping centre takes Mr Bullard, 72, about 15 minutes, so he does it twice while other members of a group known as the Plaza Pacers take their time. The group’s eight members teamed up in 2007. There are now 75 ‘Pacers’, mostly older walkers, but younger members are being urged to join, too. Mr Bullard, who has lived in Werribee for 50 years, joined after he had had a triple bypass heart operation and was told to exercise. “I started walking in the street but tripped and would have fallen except my wife caught me,” he said. “But the plaza is safe, it has no uneven surfaces, you’re out of the weather, away from dogs, there’s a medical centre and toilets and a cup of coffee and a chat

Profile \ tAXIRIDE STAR FLIES SOLO, SUE HEWITT REPORTS
e’s kicked back with Tina Turner, but at home Jason Singh is just a big kid who can’t believe the ride he has had. As the lead singer of Taxiride, he toured the world and topped the music charts. Now the Point Cook dad is preparing to release his first solo album, Humannequin. Singh looks much younger than his 39 years and has a child-like wonder at how he ‘‘fluked it’’ into the tough music industry and survived without ever having to get a “day job”. “I never picked up a guitar until I was 21,” he says. “Then within two years we were number one in the country, although by then I was the lead singer, not a guitarist.” Taxiride’s 1999 debut album Imaginate topped the Australian music charts and won the best new artist ARIA award, while songs Get Set and Everywhere You Go become top 10 hits. Along with Savage Garden, Taxiride dominated the airwaves. Way before the bright lights, Singh flirted with the idea of being a musician in high school when he was with a mate at a bus stop and started to sing. “Simon said, ‘You really can sing’. It amazed me – he was the first one to tell me that and I believed him,” he says. “Subconsciously, I have wanted to sing my whole life. I was surrounded by music, with two older sisters in charge
of the turntable, one playing Prince, the other AC/DC.” In his late teens, Singh put together a covers band called Mud, but it was a chance invitation to audition for another then unknown band that led to his success. “I knew a girl at a talent agency and she was going out with Jimmy Christo [an original Taxiride member] who asked her if she knew someone who could sing,” he says. “She told them about me and Jimmy called me in ... I sang Tracy Chapman’s Give Me One Reason. They changed the key higher, and I could do it. They kept changing the key higher and higher, and I could still do it. “The next day they said, ‘You’re in the band’.” The band then recruited instrumentalist Dan Hall. “We found Dan literally busking for cigarette money and asked him to come to the studio for a barbecue, but we ambushed him and got him to play and he stayed,” Singh says. “Here I was, the lead singer in Taxiride, surrounded by very gifted people who wanted to do the best, be the best – people like Dan Hall who could play anything. Three months later we signed with Warner Brothers.” The fun included touring Europe with Tina Turner, who hired a movie theatre for a night so the tour group could have some peace. “It was the middle of the night and we were there with Tina watching The Perfect Storm,” he says. “It was the worst movie, but we thought, you can’t get up and leave after Tina’s gone to so much trouble. Taxiride took me

PORT PHILLLIP BAY
“i’m not a guy who wants to be famous”
to Europe several times – we performed at Wembley Stadium, we did 48 states in America a few times, and toured Japan.” The ride finished in 2006 when he left the band. But Singh hasn’t stopped performing and has been working quietly on building a solo career. “After Taxiride I wanted to find out why I wanted to be a musician,” he says. “I could see the look in the eyes of people in the audience – I got instant gratification from them. “I want to be an entertainer, I’m not a guy who wants to be famous. For me it’s about getting back that instant reaction. “I’m a performer and I needed songs to perform, so I’m also a songwriter.” Singh is a father to two boys, Zeppelin, 5, and Kashmir, 2, and has been together with his wife, Leah, for 16 years – throughout the entire Taxiride journey. “My father was Indian and my mother Maltese,’’ Singh says. ‘‘His name was Mahendra, which means Joe. And in Maltese Joe is Zep and, of course, there’s Led Zeppelin. “My father had the Kashmir restaurants and there’s also Led Zeppelin’s song Kashmir, so my youngest is called that. “Everything I do is for my family. With my kids, I would bleed for them, I love family life; we are homebodies.’’ Even so, Singh remains in demand. ‘‘In the past three years I have done 800 shows,” he says.
“On grand final weekend it was crazy. I did seven gigs, including two at the casino. And I play at the Sanctuary Lakes Hotel every Friday night – I love it.” For his solo album, Singh turned to Savage Garden producer Charles Fisher, who he met with other Taxiride members in the early 2000s. “We met in a cafe in LA,” he says. “ Charles was flying high with the success of Savage Garden’s debut album that sold a million units in Australia and over 15 million worldwide. We asked him how he would produce us. “He said, ‘Well, you guys would set up and start playing, and I would hit record’. He was funny. “Fast forward a couple of years and I’m preparing songs for my own album and heard Charles had relocated from LA to Melbourne, so I contacted him. “To have a world-class producer listen to my demo was fantastic ... then he wanted to produce it. It was a dream come true.” The first single from the album, Hold On Forever, is a big-sounding multi-formatted pop/rock dance track. “Going solo is like running a marathon,’’ Singh says, “while with Taxiride it was a sprint to the top and trying to hang on for as long as you could.” \

Personally, I can’t imagine getting too excited about a horse, not even the star of this new straight-to-DVD doco, but I was entranced by the levels of passion on show. The opening credits hadn’t even rolled before Black Caviar’s jockey was getting misty-eyed about the “humbling” experience of riding a horse who “transcended [her] sport”. The word “humbling” pops up repeatedly here, with everyone from breeders to investors seeming somewhat startled to have become swept up in a national legend. “Our goal was to win one race,” an owner admits. We’re guided through the Black Caviar legend, via some suitably overblown narration about fate and destiny. Really, I’d have liked a little more background about the passions that drew contributors to their sport. The behind-the-scenes videos offer a tantalising glimpse of the stress and sweat beneath the glamour of a big race. Still, the footage of Black Caviar herself is undeniably striking. Whether she’s slinking about her enclosure or pulling ahead of the pack, even a racing cynic can see what all the fuss is about. \

ustralian car buyers have never been so spoilt for choice in the compact luxury-car market. New arrivals such as the all-new front-wheel-drive Mercedes-Benz A-Class and Volvo V40 hatchback have shaken up the status quo around the $40,000 mark, giving dominant players such as the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Mini pause for thought. But what goes around comes around, and Audi has reloaded with a third-generation A3 built on a new modular chassis architecture shared with parent company Volkswagen’s latest Golf. Of course, Audi has dipped into its high-falutin’ parts bin to give the five-door hatch – called a Sportback in Audi-speak – a special edge over its white-bread cousin. Strangely, though, the Audi A3 design team appears to have rested on its laurels this time around, with a mildly evolutionary exterior workover, making the new model hard to distinguish from its predecessor. Still, it bristles with Audi design cues from the German company’s cookie-cutter design book and could not be confused for anything but a sharp Euro sports runabout. The all-turbo, all-automatic A3 range starts at $35,600 (plus on-road costs) for the 1.4-litre TFSI Attraction. But our test car was the upmarket, more powerful $42,500 1.8 TFSI Ambition in its front-wheel-drive guise. Just this month, Audi added a Quattro version of this model, with the same handy 132kW of power but with more torque and the trademark all-wheel-drive grip, for an extra $3000. Because all A3s now ride on new lightweight underpinnings – up to 85 kilograms lighter than before – fuel consumption and performance have been enhanced, as it takes less energy to propel a trim and taut body. However, sending the chassis to WeightWatchers can have consequences, and we sensed slightly more road noise on coarse-chip bitumen roads. Despite this, the A3 retains its wonderful Euro-chic driving ambience, with highly burnished surfaces and

match that, getting 6.7L/100km in our week of mostly city driving, but the result was still commendable. The engine is tied to the Volkswagen group’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which has been the subject of much publicity after the recent safety recall. We had no such problems with this unit, although we still find it a bit clunky in operation at times. Once mobile, the transmission shifts admirably and offers the driver the alternative of crisp manual shifts via steering wheel-mounted paddles. As you would expect from Audi, steering and handling are first class, providing one of the most rewarding front-wheel-drive experiences to date in the compact luxury-hatch domain. The A3 has a high

switchgear that operates with a satisfying “thunk”. Leather upholstery is standard on all A3s; the Ambition trim level gains snug sports seats with multiple adjustments as part of a package of extras that also includes bigger 17-inch alloy wheels, front fog lights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with an array of buttons for audio control and other devices. Our test car was equipped with the extra-cost $2990 Technik package, which includes a bigger touch-screen with sat-nav system and reversing camera. The seven-inch LCD screen rises majestically from the dashboard to stand proud when in operation, but we wonder if the extra complexity of the motors and electronic controls are really necessary. Our confidence was dented on one occasion when the sat-nav declined to boot-up properly on start-up, but generally it behaved itself. The A3 is theoretically a five-seater, although the back seat is not the biggest in its class. It is adequate for three children or two large adults back there. The rear hatch provides access to a commendable boot that offers 380 litres of luggage room, or 1220 litres with the 60:40 split rear seats folded flat. The best attribute of the new A3 is its 1.8-litre turbo-charged, direct-injected four-cylinder petrol engine. This sweet unit delivers outstanding torque from not much above idle, making city driving a breeze. The new-generation Audi powerplant is also highly efficient, delivering a claimed fuel economy of 5.7 litres per 100 kilometres on the official government test. We could not

level of passive safety but, sadly, customers have to pay extra for several extra life-saving bells and whistles that are already emerging on more basic cars. All up, the new Audi A3 is a worthy and well-priced addition to one of the most hotly contested car classes. \ email@example.com

kangaroos snare tiger young gun Football
Werribee Tigers youngster Luke McDonald has landed his dream AFL move. McDonald, a midfielder who impressed with the Tigers in the VFL this season, has been snapped up by North Melbourne under the father-son rule. The Kangaroos will surrender pick eight in November’s national draft to claim him. McDonald will follow in the footsteps of his dad, Donald, who played 155 games for the Kangaroos from 1982-92, winning the club leading goalkicker award in 1984. Donald is a revered sporting figure in Wyndham, having captain-coached Werribee to its 1993 VFL flag. Elsewhere, Hoppers Crossing captain Brad Murphy has signed as player-coach of the Melton Bloods in the Ballarat Football League. Murphy has mixed playing with coaching in the past three seasons, taking the Warriors under-18s to three of their four consecutive flags. Werribee Tigers games record holder Robbie Castello will return to Essendon District Football League premier division powerhouse Maribyrnong Park for next season. \ LJ

tigers get busy on no-play day
a giant buzz is building baseball
Werribee’s opening-day bout with Box Hill panned out the same way as most round-one games in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association’s east-west group. The pitch at Box Hill City Oval was not ready for play so the match will revert to a one-dayer on Saturday. Tigers captain Shaun Dean had an inkling before confirmation of the cancellation filtered through on Thursday night. “We didn’t really expect their ground to get up seeing their VFL side made the grand final,” he said. “Our ground was a bit dodgy as well so none of our elevens played.” But the Tigers didn’t treat it as an off day, having their longest net and fielding session of the preseason on Saturday morning. The week’s delay was a blessing for the injured trio of David Wolfe, Kyle Andrews and Wade McCall. McCall is a long-term injury with a recently broken hand, but Wolfe (knee) and Andrews (hand) could go close to being included in the line-up for the second week, though both are considered long shots. If Andrews is not cleared to play, it will pave the way for second XI wicketkeeper Mason Frenkel to earn a promotion after taking five catches and scoring 30 in a warm-up game. One player who should make his much-anticipated Tigers debut is all-rounder Heath Pritchard. The new recruit could be the missing piece in the puzzle for last year’s runners-up. “He’s just an old pro; he’s been around for a long time so we know what we’re going to get from him,” Dean said. Most would have the Tigers figuring in the premiership calculations again this season. But Dean isn’t looking too far ahead. “It all looks good but, as we know, cricket is a funny game,” he said. “Just because we were up there last year doesn’t mean we’ll be there again. “If we just think it’s going to happen, we might find ourselves a bit lower than we think.” \ LJ MMP13630-01 -a9Oct©FCNVIC
new leadership provides a great vibe
Youth movement: Wes De Jong will fire up as opening day pitcher for the Werribee Giants. (DARREN HOWE)
There is a renewed energy at the Werribee Giants. The appointment of coach Phil Balzer, a state under-age coach, has given the young side a fresh outlook and the hunger seems to have returned. The Giants farewelled long-time coach Earl Byrne and even he agreed, in parting, that it was a relationship that had run its course. Giants president Steve Knight has seen a number of players get a ‘second wind’ under the new leadership. “There’s been a marked difference and they’ve relished the fact that Phil’s got a different way of training,” he said. The Giants will return to the Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 on Saturday after drawing the bye in the opening week. They will field a young team with plenty of scope for up-and-coming players. The club has brought in an import, with utility Chad Northcott scheduled to land in Australia yesterday. The Northcott name is not unfamiliar to the Giants, with his older brother Dustin having played for the Giants in seasons past. “It’s an endorsement of the club,” Knight said. “Naturally, he spoke with his brother Dustin about the move and he jumped at the chance to come over. He can pitch, but he also plays short-stop and outfield.” The biggest name to commit to the Giants is Darryl George. George rose to prominence with the Melbourne Aces in the Australian Baseball League last summer. He will play for the Giants when he’s not involved in Aces action. The Giants will open the season against Moorabbin at Presidents Park on Sunday with a young starting pitcher. Wes De Jong, a 17-year-old who has refined his game in winter-league action and spent hours working on his game at baseball academies, has claimed the No.1 pitching mantle. “He looks like he’s going to have a big season,” Knight says. \ LANCE JENKINSON email@example.com

former premiership player returns as tigers coach VFL
Werribee Tigers have moved swiftly to replace departed coach Scott West. The Tigers brought back one of their own, John Lamont, to take charge of the Victorian Football League club for the next two seasons. Lamont featured in the Tigers’ 1993 VFL premiership and has worked directly with
the Werribee playing list for the past three years in his role as development coach at the Tigers’ AFL affiliate North Melbourne, a position he occupied for seven years. Lamont, who played under-19s for Collingwood before his two years at Werribee, went on to become a successful coach, first as captain-coach of Ringwood in the Eastern Football League and then in the TAC Cup with Oakleigh Chargers
and Eastern Ranges. “The club is thrilled to have John Lamont taking over the senior coaching role, 20 years after playing in our only senior premiership,” Tigers chief executive Mark Penaluna said. “We have seen how astute a football person he is, especially over the past three years. “We already know his qualities as a person.” \ LJ OCTOBER 9, 2013 \ WYNDHAM WEEKLY 39
