growth plan could cost council A new plan for funding vital infrastructure in Wyndham’s west could leave the council $107 million out of pocket. The Growth Areas Authority’s Wyndham West development contributions plan estimates that future infrastructure in the city’s west will cost $527 million. It recommends that developers contribute $420 million, leaving the council to foot the rest of the bill. \

Five-time mayor Shane Bourke has resigned from Wyndham council, saying recent issues and decisions prompted him to quit. The popular Chaffey ward councillor, who was first elected 25 years ago, announced the surprise decision on Monday night. He declined to reveal exactly why he was leaving, except that he had doubts about his ability to remain effective. Cr Bourke was one of only two candidates to receive a quota at last year’s election. In a statement, Cr Bourke said recent council decisions led him to question if he could continue to make a difference to the community. “While I am supportive of the decision-making process in general and the views of others, I have been left questioning whether I am still able to a make a positive difference for the wider community,” he said. Cr Bourke told the Weekly his resignation was “one of the most difficult” decisions of his life, but it was the right thing to do. “I have had the honour of serving the Wyndham community as a councillor for 17 years over a 25-year period, and I have loved every moment,” he said. Mayor Heather Marcus said Cr Bourke, who celebrated his 25th anniversary of being elected to council in August, would be a great loss. “This in an incredibly sad day, not just for this council but the entire city,’’ she said. “Cr Bourke’s legacy extends beyond the buildings and road improvements – he has worked hard to build a community and provide leadership during times of unprecedented growth.” Former mayors Pat Goodwin and Kim McAliney said Cr Bourke had been a wonderful ambassador for Wyndham. A countback of last year’s poll will determine Cr Bourke’s replacement, with his votes to be distributed among the other Chaffey ward candidates. Ms McAliney, the last candidate eliminated from the count, said she had not decided if she would return to council if she won the countback. \ LAURA LITTLE

rentals a dope Growth area SANCTUARY LAKES
Landlords are being urged to keep a close eye on their rental properties after a police raid on a Sanctuary Lakes house uncovered 300 cannabis plants. Last Wednesday’s haul, the latest in a series of raids, had an estimated street value of $1.1 million. Wyndham police raided the Brindabella Chase rental property about 6pm. Detective Sergeant Matt Kershaw said construction workers in the area noticed a constant smell of cannabis so tipped police off about the house. No charges have been laid. It was the seventh drug bust in Wyndham in recent weeks, with police raiding six houses in Tarneit and Truganina earlier in September. The raids uncovered about 1000 cannabis plants. Detective Sergeant Kershaw said rental properties in Tarneit and Truganina were increasingly being used by crop managers from St Albans and Sunshine.
“They rent houses on the fringe [of Wyndham] so they don’t have to drive their vans through Werribee when they harvest the plants and risk getting spotted,” he said. He urged landlords to be more vigilant about who they rented to and to ensure tenants provided as much identification as possible, as many were using fake IDs. Sweeney Real Estate director Tracey Dean said the agency had taken over the management of houses in the Tarneit area that had been used as grow houses and had seen the work landlords had to do to make the houses safe to lease again. ‘‘It is damaging to the landlord’s investment because the neighbours know what happened and we have to legally disclose [that it was a grow house] if asked,” she said. \ LAURA LITTLE » Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

ot all jobs require a resume, cover letter and interview. There are plenty that don’t even come with a pay packet at the end of the month. For the carers in our community, work is often not applied for, is mostly done for love, and is always vitally important. There are 700,000 people who act as unpaid family carers across Victoria, a mind-boggling number when you think about it. The obvious ones are parents who have children with disabilities, but there are also many younger carers helping look after mum or dad after an accident or illness. The work that carers do is often undervalued, which is ironic given we probably couldn’t function as a society if we had to pay someone else to do it. According to Carers Victoria, people who spend time caring for others often struggle financially, as their paid work prospects are lessened and the extra costs for essentials such as medical assistance, pharmaceuticals and transport are greater. Carers are sometimes socially isolated because of their roles and are at a greater chance of developing depression or anxiety due to the emotionally draining nature of their work. Many are chronically tired due to broken sleep patterns, which can lead to other serious health problems. Yet the rewards can be many. The opportunities for personal growth and the development of new skills, as well as strengthening the relationships with the people they are caring for, are what keep many carers going. Wyndham council will acknowledge the valuable work of carers in our area with a day out at the civic centre on Saturday, October 19. It coincides with Victorian Carers Week (October 13-19) and is a wonderful way to celebrate these quiet heroes in our community. \ EMMA SUTCLIFFE Emma Sutcliffe is a Little River-based freelance writer.

clinic helps keep things neighbourly WERRIBEE
A pilot clinic at Wyndham Legal Service is helping to keep neighbourhood disputes out of the courts. The clinic, run with the help of the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria, was launched in an effort to increase the number of disputes settled by mediation. Latest figures from the centre reveal that 672 complaints about neighbourhood disputes were made in Wyndham in 2012-13. More than half of the complaints related to fences, while 166 were about neighbour behaviour. In a draft report into access to legal services in outer-suburban areas to be released later this year, Wyndham Legal Service lawyer Shorna Moore has identified neighbourhood disputes as an increasing problem in growth areas. Ms Moore said the fortnightly clinic was helping homeowners in new estates settle disputes that might otherwise escalate into criminal matters such as assaults. “There is a need for a less adversarial modal which encourages people to resolve disputes with their neighbours outside the courtroom,” she said. A Werribee woman, jailed for two months after pleading guilty to stealing almost $40,000 from Centrelink by claiming she was a carer for her dead grandmother, has lodged an appeal against her sentence. Debra Frith faced Sunshine Magistrates Court last Wednesday, where she was sentenced to six months, to be released after two months, and placed on a two-year community corrections order that included 300 hours of community work. She faced two charges of obtaining property by deception after the Department of Human Services discovered her grandmother had died in 2003. The department said Frith had claimed a carer’s payment and allowance between July 2004 and August 2006. Frith was paid a total of $39,914 and has since repaid $4575. The court heard she suffered from mental health issues and had been depressed at the time of the offending. Department of Public Prosecutions spokeswoman Kathy Medved said the fraud had been picked up by Centrelink’s data-matching system. Frith’s appeal will be heard in the County Court on November 26. \ LL

GRAEME OXLEY \ WYNDHAM VALE DIY ASBESTOS WARNING As homemakers roll up their sleeves for the annual spring DIY boom, it’s timely to remind them asbestos still lurks in one of every three Australian homes. Whether they are seasoned renovators or DIY newcomers inspired by The Block, it is vital people understand the risks associated with asbestos, a building material commonly used in Australia until the mid-1980s. A recent interstate survey published in The Medical Journal of
Australia found more than 61 per cent of people who had undertaken DIY renovations had been exposed to asbestos. While not everyone exposed to asbestos will get sick, a single exposure could trigger a disease like mesothelioma, which is invariably fatal. I would urge renovators who encounter suspect building materials to consult a licensed asbestos removalist. A full list is available in the asbestos section of WorkSafe Victoria’s website. It looks like the Abbott government will test the waters of public opinion by pretending to announce something by mistake and seeing what reception it gets. It tried this on with Education Minister Christopher Pyne announcing the government would reintroduce caps on university places and scrap the compulsory service fee. This was quickly played down by Prime Minister Tony Abbott after the media screamed it was his first broken promise. That didn’t stop debate, and we had the usual arguments about uni places going to people who didn’t warrant them and how some people aren’t suited to university. This is code for “people who can’t afford university should look at a trade or TAFE course and not clog up the system for those who are financially more entitled’’. University is a great social leveller. Let’s keep it that way. \ DAVID BONNICI \ EDITOR

yndham mayor Heather Marcus has lived in the city since 1969 and was initially drawn to the area for its country feel. Having watched it grow from just 8000 people to its present 187,000, she says there’s plenty for a growing population to enjoy.
Where’s your favourite retreat spot? Beautiful Werribee River, it’s the spine of our city. I sit on the rocks behind the reeds and nobody has any idea I’m there; it’s a great place to relax and enjoy birdlife. I can dream about what I want for the city there.
\ HEATHER MARCUS LOVES OUR
WATERWAY. BY REBECCA MILLER
“We didn’t have sewerage in 1969”
Favourite place to get coffee and a bite to eat? I only drink hot water. But I worked in a fashion shop along Watton Street for many years and feel like I belong there, talking with the business owners and employees. The people are wonderful and the shops overlook the river. I like visiting Chatterbox Café and Bridge Hotel and love Thai and Indian food.
What wouldn’t you change? Werribee River. I don’t want housing built close to it and want it to keep the country feel.
What’s changed since you moved here? We didn’t have sewerage in 1969, and my children asked what the man was doing in our yard with the bucket. And Heaths Road wasn’t a made road; it was lined with blue metal. Most embarrassing moment when out and about? When I was mayor in 2010, I was at the opening of a community centre with a playground. I was dared to slide down a big slide but soon realised I had a short skirt on. Everyone looked at me while I was at the top and I thought, will I still be a lady at the end? \

asmine envelops the Footscray cottage where 1920s detective and femme extraordinaire Phryne Fisher perches on the kitchen table of author Kerry Greenwood. The heady scent of a million white blossoms counters the traffic and fast food distractions at the end of the street, offering the visitor a very real illusion of passing through a time zone to where this most prolific of writers fuels her fascination with history and the largely under-written roles that women have within its more conventional tomes. Research and attention to detail are her greatest allies, along with a vivid imagination and an ability to walk in other people’s shoes, even centuries later. “I am addicted to researching,” Greenwood says very early on in our interview when we are talking about Out of the Black Land, her only novel, of more than 50 thus far, set in ancient Egypt. “Egyptian and Hittite history are quite well documented,” she says. “What attracted me about [researching] Egypt is that there are love songs and shopping lists, jokes and graffiti ... and the textiles; all that gold.” This wealth of daily life details, the minutiae of how ancient Egyptian society was organised, along with its close connections to early Greece, inspired Greenwood to pose serious academic questions about the era of 18 dynasty kings and the nation’s deadly dalliance with monotheism under the unstable, sun-god worshipping king Akhnaten. It was learning Greek that transported Greenwood’s already fertile imagination and gift for words and languages into the timeless zone of myths and fairy tales, epic adventures and personal quests. “I’m an honorary wog, you know,” Greenwood says proudly, pointing out that along the short Seddon street where she has lived for more than 30 years, there are 26 different languages spoken. She learnt Greek, aged five, after meeting her lifelong friend Themetrula Georgovasilopoulos, who had migrated to Footscray with her family. French came from school and Sicilian Latin from other neighbourhood children. Multicultural Melbourne provided the playgrounds of her youth. “I read dictionaries; I still love dictionaries,” Greenwood confesses. It was once said of American poet, author and social activist Marge Piercy that “she could weave a tale with a pebble and a thread”. Greenwood is of the same ilk, but it took Melbourne publisher Hilary McPhee to focus the almost 30-year-old Greenwood on detective stories and crime fiction as the medium for her writing. As she was already working full time as a duty solicitor at Sunshine court, Greenwood insisted her first two-book contract with McPhee be historically based. “I was afraid I would steal a client’s case,” she says. “Poor darlings have enough on their plates without me stealing their stories. I thought this would be unethical.” Besides, history is Greenwood’s muse, her fountain of knowledge and the basis of her understanding of herself and her city. The Phryne Fisher book series is set in 1928-29, the time of “the great wharf strike” at the Melbourne docks, an era that had piqued Greenwood’s curiosity since a thesis from her student days. It was the time between the two ‘great’ world wars, just before the global depression of the 1930s, and an era of great opportunity for young women prepared to take their chances at financial independence rather than domestic spinsterhood, as was the lot of many a maiden aunt as a result of the dearth of marriageable men due to WWI. Named after a fabled Corinthian courtesan, Phryne Fisher was created on the tram ride home from Greenwood’s meeting with McPhee. “I gave her a minor English title so no one can overawe her,” her creator says. “And she’s going to have money and do exactly as she wishes. I wanted her to have complete freedom of action.” Not for Phryne the “pillow talk” take on how women

build influence; Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is as capable of wielding a pistol, and shooting it if necessary, as she is competent behind the wheel or under the bonnet of her beloved red Hispano-Suiza motor car. She is as much at home on the battlefields of Flanders and the back streets of Chinatown as she is in the parlours of people of power and persuasion. “By the time I got off the tram, she’d walked into my head,” Greenwood recalls. “She has a strong sense of justice. She’s living in a very intense world where all bets are off. “And because she is a hero, she always works it out eventually. She’s seldom wrong.” After her sixth Phryne Fisher murder mystery, Greenwood grew concerned she was becoming formula-driven and, not wanting to go down the Agatha Christie track, decided to strip her character down to bare bones for Blood and Circuses (1994). “She came out of it a goddess,” enthuses Greenwood.
“I love when Phryne comes in and sits on the corner of the table and says, ‘oh, darling, that was amazing!’” Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is now making her 20th appearance in print and starring in a TV series that is redefining the world view of Australia and, more importantly, Melbourne, even winning over notoriously snobby French art critics and absolutely wow-ing audiences in New York, London, Paris ... and Brazil. “And there’s not a single Skippy in the whole series,” Greenwood points out. The 20th Phryne Fisher mystery, Murder and Mendelssohn, was released on September 25 by Allen and Unwin. It is Greenwood’s second publication this year. \ firstname.lastname@example.org » Kerry Greenwood launches Murder and Mendelssohn at Yarraville’s Sun Theatre at 11am on Saturday, October 12. Year 10 student Danae Haynes (pictured) beat 646 other students to win an ‘Australian Indigenous Mentoring Experience’ initiative, which required her to write and record the speech she would give to Parliament if she was elected as Australia’s first indigenous prime minister. Seriously, some agents must think you came down in the last shower!
Some agents ask you to fork out hundreds – sometimes thousands – of dollars in upfront advertising money before your property’s even sold. All of which advertises the agent. If your property doesn’t sell, you lose all this money! Some agents tell you that your property is worth one price and then, later, once they’ve signed you up, they’ll tell you it’s worth a much lower price. And they’ll still want a big
commission if they sell it at the lower price. Some agents restrict buyer inspections on your home to just one hour at one open-for-inspection per week. If your property is not selling, some agents will forget about the fact they told you it was worth a high price and they’ll start pressuring you to sell for a low price. Seriously, some agents must think you came down in the last shower.

Developer Central Equity Land is having a Super Spring Land Sale at its Featherbrook estate in Point Cook, offering house and land packages from $319,000. Centre, a popular hub with child and maternal healthcare, kindergarten rooms, play equipment, IT training services, meeting rooms and a purpose-built kitchen for hospitality training. PROFILE \ THIS WERRIBEE COUPLE IS ALWAYS ON SONG, AS SUE HEWITT REPORTS
hile today’s girls dream of falling in love with members of boy bands, Werribee’s Ann Beaumont won the heart of her own “band boy” many decades ago. Ralph Beaumont was a British army musician, known as a band boy, when he wed Ann. Ralph, 82, and Ann, 79, will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on October 10. Ralph was playing clarinet in the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry band when, as a 14-year-old, he was posted to Borneo in the late 1940s. Homesick, he placed an advertisement in a London newspaper seeking a pen pal. Ann responded, starting a romance that has seen the couple raise three daughters and travel the world. They corresponded for two years before Ralph returned to London. “He sent a telegram – I still have it – saying to meet him at Kings Cross station at 6pm,” Ann says. “It was already 5pm and I lived a long way from the station, but when I arrived at 7pm he was still waiting.” The couple married and spent the next 30 years travelling the world with the army, including postings in Germany and Malaysia, where Ralph met a contingent of Australian troops with whom he kept in touch. Daughter Jacki Tuffin said the Diggers told her father about Australia and it sparked his interest. “The Aussies told him when there was a vacancy in the RAAF central band,” she says.
“He got it and moved the family to Werribee 40 years ago, to be near the Laverton RAAF base, and hasn’t moved since. “My parents raised three daughters, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and they’ve loved Werribee.”
Ralph moved into Werribee Terrace Aged Care three months ago, but Ann visits him daily. Jacki and sisters Penny Lentini and Madeline Dunster, who still live in Werribee, will join the anniversary celebrations. \ email@example.com

Killer or Max? Don’t let a pet’s name rise up and bite you By Rebecca Miller
hakespeare once wrote: ‘‘What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.’’ It seems that now more than ever names are becoming very important, especially for pets. They appear to be just a s important as choosing the animal itself. In the past, names were often chosen by the look or nature of the beloved cat or dog — Spot, Blacky or Fluffy — but now it seems pets are becoming more like an added child of the family, taking on human names, such as Max, Lucy, Charlie and Sam.
Dog, cat or both: The choice of name is an important one.
‘‘The more human names we give our pets, the more family-like a role they tend to play,’’ author of The Baby Name Wizard, Laura Wattenberg says.

SOME TIPS TO REMEMBER WHEN CHOOSING YOUR PET’S NAME: Pick a name that the pet can easily recognise. Animals respond better to one- or twosyllable names. Choose a name that’s both easy to pronounce and one you’re happy to call out. Shouting "Buddy" or "Max" in the park will be less embarrassing than calling out "Killer". Wait a few days to study your pet’s behaviour; this can help you pick the right name. Aussie website bowwow.com.au has a pet name search where pet owners can get ideas for their four-legged friends by perusing by letter, their pet’s appearance, or pop culture category, including people of note in the fields of sport, fashion and loads more.

A win at the Royal Melbourne Show was icing on the cake for Point Cook schoolgirl Chloe, 12. The Emmanuel College year 7 student took out the prize for junior cake decorating with a christening cake featuring icing sugar booties and flowers. It’s her second win after a victory with a teddy bears’ picnic cake in 2011. Chloe began cake decorating as a nine-year-old after learning some tricks from her grandmother. She is now one of the youngest members of the Cake Decorating Association of Victoria. Chloe hopes to become an architect, likening it to the creativity and patience required in cake decorating. \ SH

MB BS BSc(Hons)B Med Sc MS FRANZCO Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for most of the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery from 1963! He has now passed away but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. “One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision due to congenital cataracts even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered. moore’s leadership made him a monty for the medal Football
The signing of mature-aged recruit Jarred Moore will go down as a resounding success for the Werribee Tigers. The former Sydney Swans player was one of the on-field leaders in his first season with the Tigers in the Victorian Football League and walked away with the Bruce Montgomery Trophy for best and fairest at the club. ex-tiger licks his wounds
werribee to hit the road running
Wyndham turned purple for one of its adopted sons on AFL grand final day. Werribee Tigers fans with no allegiances to Hawthorn were on the Fremantle bandwagon with former star Michael Barlow turning out for the West Australian club. Barlow, 25, comes from a sports-mad family in Shepparton, but it wasn’t until he moved to Werribee in the Victorian Football League that his football career went through the roof. He arrived at Watton Street as a raw 20-year-old in 2008 with big raps on him after winning a Morrison Medal as best-and-fairest in the Goulburn Valley Football League. Within two years, he was a fan favourite and household name in the VFL. By the end of 2009, he was the club best and fairest, Fothergill Round medallist for the best young player in the VFL and runner-up in the prestigious JJ Liston Trophy. Barlow’s journey to the big league was one of persistence after he was rookie-listed by Fremantle in preseason 2010. He refused to give up on his AFL dream after a sickening broken leg. He suffered a clean break through the tibia and fibula in a collision with teammate Rhys Palmer, which threatened to ruin his career. But Barlow didn’t let it defeat him. His comeback would be one of the many stories retold by television news services, radio shows and daily newspapers in the lead-up to the grand final. Unfortunately for Barlow and the Dockers, there was no storybook ending on Saturday. When Barlow spoke to the Weekly in the rooms post-game, the pain of a 15-point grand final loss to Hawthorn was etched in his face. “It’s absolutely gut-wrenching, it’s just devastation across the group,” he said. “A real strength of this group is that we bleed for each other; we hurt as much as each other and we want to achieve for each other. “At the moment, you hurt for them and you hurt for the whole group, not just the 22 but the blokes who have been injured and couldn’t play, and the coaching staff.” Barlow was left with no doubt that premierships at the top level are won and lost
Werribee will kick-start its Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association east-west group campaign on the road against Box Hill in a two-dayer starting on Saturday. The Tigers made it all the way to the grand final last campaign before losing to one of their nearest rivals, Melton, and will be eager to atone by going one step better this season. Their first home match will be in round two against Altona. In the Victorian Turf Cricket Association, Hoppers Crossing will again be the highest-ranked club from Wyndham. The Cats will begin their top-flight senior division campaign with a grudge match against rivals Airport WestSt Christopher’s in a two-day game away at Etzel Street Reserve. Werribee Centrals are back up to north A1 after their premiership in west B1 last season. The Centurions will host Aberfeldie at Galvin Park in a tough opening to the season. The west B1 will be full of local derbies after a number of clubs from local competition joined the VTCA ranks. Wyndhamvale was one of the clubs to make the move from Williamstown and District Cricket Association and its first port of call will be a meeting with Barkly Street Uniting at Wyndhamvale Reserve. The Vales were the A turf champions in the WDCA last season and won’t be back to defend their title. Point Cook opens up at home against Kingsville Baptists, while Seabrook entertains Footscray ANA. In the WDCA, the A turf takes on a new look, with Bellbridge the only top tier local representative. Its campaign begins with a home match against Melton South at Mossfield Reserve on Saturday. \ LJ

under the finest of margins. The Dockers were overwhelmed by the occasion early, while the finals-hardened Hawks settled in no time. Ross Lyon’s Dockers are renowned for their attention to detail, but they made uncharacteristic errors on the biggest stage. Barlow says the missed chances in front of goal will be nitpicked externally, but there were other areas ever-so-slightly in favour of the Hawks that left the Dockers licking their wounds instead of transporting a premiership cup across the Nullarbor. “We had the opportunity today and didn’t grab the opportunity,” he said.
“Never a moment throughout the game, right until the final siren, did we not imagine we could win it. I think just some basic errors [were costly] and a lot will be made about the misses in front of goal. “More so, there were moments of win-loss across the whole 120 minutes, and Hawthorn probably had a 52-53 per cent win across the day – and that’s tackling, contested ball and basic skills.” Barlow had a strong second half to finish with 23 disposals, eight tackles and three marks. \ LANCE JENKINSON
