Trial and error over lighting also replaced some of the globes with brighter ones.’’ The association still hopes the centre will receive updated lights which comply with the competition standard, which cost about $30,000. The recreation centre is owned by the shire, and the Western Port Basketball Association is the major tenant of the facility. Pirrotta said the association wasn’t contacted prior to the installation of the lights and the new lighting had made the centre an unplayable venue. ‘‘The consultation process was poor but through it I think we have developed a better relationship with council,’’ he said. ‘‘Both the shire and Western Port Basketball are here to service the community and I think we both want to have quality facilities.’’ The shire backpedalled last week, saying the lights were a ‘‘trial’’. ‘‘The shire trialled energy-efficient lighting

for the Somerville stadium, however the trial was unsuccessful,’’ the shire’s manager recreation and leisure Peter Gore said. ‘‘Somerville has a number of basketball games that have specific lighting requirements and the revised fittings and light globes did not provide consistent and even lighting across the court, and consequently the lighting has been removed.’’ Mr Gore said the shire would continue to investigate suitable energy-efficient lighting options and would work with the basketball association to ensure that any replacement lighting met the appropriate standard. The shire could not confirm how much was spent on the energy-efficient lighting which will be transferred to the Hastings Hub. ‘‘Hastings Hub has been deemed more suitable for this lighting program given there are only domestic games and training undertaken at this venue,’’ Mr Gore said.

BASKETBALLERS at Somerville Recreation Centre were literally left in the dark after Mornington Peninsula Shire installed new lights at the courts. The energy-efficient lights would have saved thousands of dollars each year on electricity bills for the centre. But Western Port Basketball Association general manager Marc Pirrotta said the lights, installed two weeks ago, were not up to the standard required for its competitions. Despite not being initially consulted about the changes to the lights, Pirrotta said the shire had since been co-operative and had rectified the problem. ‘‘The new lights have been removed and the old lights have been reinstalled,’’ he said ‘‘As well as restoring the old lights, the shire

Re: Rosebud pool Why did councillors Gibb, Shaw and Smith vote against geotechnical and engineering reports being prepared for the site of Cr Gibb’s ‘grand design’ on the central Rosebud foreshore, when they know full well that it is one of the requirements laid down by the environment minister before he gives consent before any building is to proceed on Crown land?

School planning overdue With our population growth in the Mt Martha and Mornington region over the past 13 years, a major problem is rising for parents with children nearing secondary school age — a genuine lack of secondary school places. Our primary schools are bursting at the seams, some designed to educate around 450 pupils now

catering for significantly larger numbers. With so many additional students seeking secondary places at state and independently operated secondary schools in and around Mt Martha and Mornington, especially those in year 4, by 2015 we could have the very real prospect of not having enough places to properly educate these children. It is all well and good for Mornington MP David Morris to state in parliament last month that “certainly, the anecdotal evidence suggests there is likely to be continued high demand for some time” and to call on the Baillieu government to review the plans of the education department for the provision of public secondary education in the Mornington electorate. The time for a review was three or four years ago when it was becoming evident that our community was growing faster than we could cater. It is staring us in the face that by 2015 we will need a new secondary school built somewhere north of the Nepean Highway in either Mt Martha or Mornington.

which residents can put their ideas and points of view. The council then goes ahead and does what it has already decided is best for the community. So what is the point of the meetings? Did they hold them for the siting of the aquatic centre? Did they listen to the majority? Are they going to do what they decided they knew was best for the residents and the area? It’s all a sham. Nippon injects new life into BlueScope BY LEE OPITZ STRUGGLING steel manufacturer BlueScope has been given a lifeline with a multimilliondollar investment. Japanese company Nippon Steel Corporation has acquired 50 per cent of BlueScope’s Asian and North American businesses with a US$540 million capital injection. The two companies will also form a $1.29 billion joint venture to make coated steel products in Australia and overseas. BlueScope Steel, Australia’s biggest steelmaker, last year pulled out of the export market and cut half of its steel production after posting a net loss of $530 million in the six months to December 31. This resulted in 250 workers losing their jobs at the company’s hot strip mill in Hastings and hundreds more at other plants. The company’s net losses for this year are expected to be around $1 billion. BlueScope’s manager for Western Port, Bob Pullein, said while the partnership was good

news, the company was not yet out of the woods. ‘‘While not directly affecting our Australian business, it clears our net debt, affording BlueScope further financial flexibility to invest in growth opportunities that deliver strong returns,’’ Mr Pullein said. “There is no question that our Australian business has had a difficult few years, but the benefits of the decisive action we took last year are beginning to flow through. “Translating what it means for BlueScope in Australia, and more particularly our Western Port operations here in Victoria, essentially it provides a stronger financial platform for the company overall, enabling the investment of capital into Western Port’s metal coating lines to upgrade the lines to produce the next generation of Colorbond and Zincalume steel products. This is great news for us and an important investment in our future.’’ Despite the partnership, the company will continue to be known as BlueScope.

Mental health help gets boost THE state’s first mental health treatment centre designed specifically for young people has opened its doors in Frankston. Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge was at the Youth Prevention and Recovery Care Service in Yuille Street for the official opening. PARC provides early intervention in a home-like setting for youths aged 16-25 from Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. It is for those who are becoming unwell or in the early stages of recovery from an acute psychiatric episode and don’t require hospitalisation. Young people are expected to stay at the 10-bed inpatient facility for a minimum of two weeks or up to 28 days, depending on their needs. The centre is always staffed by a team of trained clinicians and mental health recovery workers. The facility, for which the state government paid $4.5 million to establish and will contribute

Schoolboys giving traders hard time BY SAMANTHA ROBIN A GROUP of boys loitering around Hastings is causing problems to shoppers and retailers. Senior Sergeant Stephen Burt said Hastings police wanted to speak to a group of five boys, aged between eight and 12. A number of shopkeepers have complained about the boys, who have been hanging around the Hastings library and High Street shopping strip. Several traders have accused the youngsters of using bad language, throwing rubbish and damaging their shops and goods. Senior Sergeant Burt said police were addressing the problem. ‘‘Police will be targeting High Street and speaking to young people in the area. ‘‘We have CCTV footage of the suspects and once they are identified, we will be following up with their parents. We are concerned about the safety and welfare of the retailers and the community in general.’’

[WPW]

The children are of primary school age and the incidents occurred during school hours. Senior Sergeant Burt encouraged parents to monitor their children’s behaviour. ‘‘If they cause trouble and do the wrong thing they will be held accountable,’’ he warned. ‘‘We encourage parents to be actively aware of where their children are during school hours. ‘‘Don’t just assume they are at school when you drop them off at the front gate. ‘‘We will be following up with the schools on the behaviour of these children.’’ Senior Sergeant Burt urged witnesses to any of the incidents to call triple-0. ‘‘The problem seems to have spiked in the past few months,’’ he said. ‘‘Shopkeepers should report any damage early. ‘‘Don’t wait till the culprits have gone to call the police. ‘‘The sooner we can get there, the sooner we can deal with these individuals.’’

REPORTS that the Clean Ocean Foundation has decided not to fold and will now concentrate its efforts on Wonthaggi’s desalination plant has confused former and current members of the group. The environmental lobby group was formed in 2000 to focus on closing Australia’s ocean sewage outfalls, starting with Boags Rock outfall at Gunammatta Beach. The group’s executive and other members were notified in an email on July 14 that, following a special meeting of committee members the previous evening, a decision had been made to wind up the organisation. However, last week it was reported that president Pete Smith said the foundation would not be disbanded but would relocate its office to Wonthaggi to concentrate on monitoring the effects of discharges from the desalination plant on the ocean environment once the plant was up and running. Clean Ocean’s website shows that two members of the committee of five and the former CEO are no longer listed. Former and current members who spoke to the Weekly said they were surprised at the

turn of events and were still confused about whether the organisation had closed. The Weekly called Mr Smith for comment, but he had not responded before going to press. It is not known if Clean Ocean intends to join forces with long-time local antidesalination group Watershed. Nor is it clear what the group’s role will be while waiting for the plant to start operating which, according to experts, could be at least eight years away with Victorian water storages currently at about 70 per cent full. The plant was due to be completed by June 30, after its operator AquaSure had already received a six-month extension. The due date has now been moved to February after another six-month extension. Flinders federal MP Greg Hunt said he welcomed the news that Clean Ocean Foundation would continue the fight to improve the marine environment and broaden its focus to include the desalination plant. ‘‘Cleaning up the Gunnamatta sewage outfall has been a major focus of mine for many years and I am delighted that with the tertiary upgrade to the Eastern Treatment Plant well under way, we are nearing the end of that community campaign.’’

But the Richmond-based independent researcher, who grew up in Cranbourne South, believes thylacines could still be prowling around parts of the mainland, including on the peninsula. ‘‘There have been scattered sightings reported over the years including from a local in Crib Point, about five years ago, who said they saw one late at night,’’ Mr Moss said. ‘‘There have also been a couple of alleged sightings at Mt Martha over the past couple of years, one in Tootgarook 15 years ago and a few in Rosebud in the 1970s.’’ He said the state government introduced several threatened native species into the Wilsons Promontory National Park from 1910-41, mostly between 1910-15. Although more prosaic creatures, such as wombats and quolls, were on the official list, he says it’s quite possible Tasmanian tigers were also released into the wild, with authorities keeping this secret to prevent the animals from

being hunted. ‘‘They would have then spread and spread to areas including the peninsula,’’ he said. ‘‘Victoria is very poorly mammal surveyed. For example, a tiger quoll in the Otways was only recently discovered by a member of the public. And I have picked up a samba deer on an infrared camera in central Gippsland which wasn’t known to be there.’’ Mr Moss said the increasing use of cameras, particularly those attached to car dashboards, were certain to result in proof positive that the Tasmanian tiger was still around. ‘‘They are

A police pursuit started in Tyabb and ended soon after in Baxter last Saturday , after the car being pursued collided with another vehicle. A police spokeswoman said the pursuit started in Frankston-Flinders Road, Tyabb, just before 6pm after police attempted to intercept a vehicle for a routine check. The vehicle collided with another car a short time later near Eramosa Road, Baxter. The driver involved in the pursuit, a Langwarrin man aged in his 20s, was taken to Frankston Hospital with minor injuries. Anyone with information can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or go to crimestoppers.com.au.

Man hurt in road rage incident A Hastings man was injured in an apparent road rage incident in Dandenong last Friday night, a police spokeswoman saying Dandenong detectives were investigating reports of an assault. Police have been told that a man was driving a blue Ford sedan along Lonsdale Street about 9.30pm when he had a verbal altercation with the drivers of two other vehicles. All three vehicles continued driving until coming to a stop shortly after the intersection with Frankston-Dandenong Road. Police believe all parties exited their cars, after which the Hastings man, 31, who was driving the Ford, was punched a number of times to the head, causing him to fall and break his ankle. He was taken to Dandenong Hospital for treatment. Police want to speak to the female driver of a dark-coloured sedan and two men in a silver-coloured hatchback who were seen in the area at the time.

shy and it’s very difficult to be in the right place at the right time.’’ He said one of his many sources is a man who was an assistant to a lighthouse keeper named Ernie Jones in the Otways. He said that in 1973, Mr Jones, who was from Rosebud, told him to come and look at an animal he had shot that had been eating his chickens. He has no doubt that he was shown a dead Tasmanian tiger. Mr Moss referred the Weekly to another source, former taxi driver Simon Marden who is positive he has seen a Tasmanian tiger three times in the Red Hill/Main Ridge area. ‘‘The last time was in 2003 about 1.20am when I was on my way to pick up someone in my cab. There it was, right smack bang in the middle of the road. There was no doubt, I saw the stripes and its hooked tail,’’ said Mr Marden, who now lives in Maffra. His theory is the tigers escaped from an enclosure he believes was set up at Red Hill during World War 1 after a peninsula resident offered to take on carnivores from Melbourne Zoo after food rationing hit the zoo’s meat supply. To report possible sightings, call Michael Moss on 0434 904 944.

FEATURESTORY

A juggling act around the clock Is it really possible to have it all — house, job and happy family? SAMANTHA ROBIN talks to high achievers managing this delicate balancing act. t Eliza mother Kate McKenzie has juggling work and home life down to a tee. When the Weekly drops by, she is helping with two sets of homework while breastfeeding her six-month-old. Meanwhile, husband Kevin McKenzie, 44, is handling two separate conference calls before rushing off to take one of the children to basketball practice. Chilli con carne is bubbling away on the stove for dinner and banana bread is baking in the oven. Mrs McKenzie, 40, says there is no such thing as a typical day for the blended family, whose five youngest members are aged from six months to 12 years. Just completing the morning school run involves driving to three schools. Mrs McKenzie, a lawyer and Seaford business owner, is on maternity leave and her husband works as a project manager. They travel to Melbourne for work. She says the secret to their success is keeping organised. There is a ‘‘getting ready for school’’ checklist stuck to the wall, outlining what the children have to do in the mornings, and both parents have an electronic family diary on their smart phones. To say ‘‘mornings are chaotic’’ is an understatement. ‘‘It’s not easy. I don’t think anyone gets it right all of the time,’’ Mrs McKenzie says. Social researcher Mark McCrindle, of McCrindle Research, says this sort of juggling act is a reality of modern times — ‘‘in many ways it is very ‘in vogue’ to have it all’’. ‘‘These days there seems to be less structure in our lives and the work day tends to bleed into home life,’’ he explains. ‘‘With the increased prevalence of technology we can’t seem to switch ourselves off.’’ Mr McCrindle says there has been a shift in the nation’s approach to work. The land of the ‘long weekend’ is now home to employees with some of the longest working hours in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development). Bittern mother Sarah Bath, who has twin 31⁄2-year-old boys, says finding the balance between work and home life is a constant struggle. ‘‘You think you have got it mastered and then you get a curve ball,’’ she says. ‘‘It seems like when things are going well at home, things are unbalanced at work and vice versa.’’ Mrs Bath, 32, and husband Cory Bath, 35, share looking after the household and their sons. As a teacher, Mrs Bath takes her role as educator seriously and expects the same from the

Multi-tasking: Kevin and Kate McKenzie with their brood: Lexie, 4, Seth, 12, Ella, 9, Sophia, six months, and Josie, 8. daycare centre that minds her boys. ‘‘I know what parents want from me for their children and I know my kids are getting the same attention from the people who look after them at daycare.’’ She admits there have been times when the boys have had to be literally pulled off her at daycare as she scrambles to get to work on time. But while there is some guilt, Mrs Bath says, using daycare works for their family. ‘‘I know I’m a better mother when I am working. I need that mental stimulation and it brings out the best in me when I come home.’’ She has long since given up comparing herself to other parents. ‘‘Everyone marvels at what you get done, but at the time time, if you don’t do it, you get some questioning glances in the playground.’’ Lifeline spokesman John Mendel say many people found themselves struggling to live up to societal ideals — ‘‘there is a lot of pressure in society to be someone that you are not’’. Lifeline’s 2012 stress poll, taken as part of an independent survey, revealed 91 per cent of respondents were suffering ‘some’ stress, while 43 per cent were suffering from ‘a lot’ or unhealthy levels of stress. ‘‘I think everyone suffers some degree of stress. When it gets to an unhealthy level that is when you have to start re-evaluating things,’’ Mr Mendel says. ‘‘If we do see stress leading to

August 22, 2012

burnout, it is important to address those issues causing the stress.’’ The poll found unhealthy stress levels peaked among the 35-39 age bracket. ‘‘The 30-40 age bracket is the critical time where people are moving into the family state, with housing shifts, mortgages and additional financial stresses. Across all those fronts they are facing extra responsibilities,’’ Mr McCrindle says. ‘‘By the time people are into their 40s, they have become more skilled at balancing the pressures in their lives. They have had time to catch their breath, their children are often a little bit older and more independent and they are moving into a stage where they are thinking about significance from a life perspective rather than just a career perspective.’’ Women (50 per cent) reported more unhealthy levels of stress than men (36 per cent). Mr McCrindle says this probably reflects women’s ability to fulfil multiple roles. ‘‘We have found the carer role is, for the most, still borne by women. Whether it be for children or ageing parents, they seem to be the ones slipping into those roles.’’ Perhaps surprisingly, households earning under $50,000 recorded lower stress levels than households reaping $90,000. Mr McCrindle says moving into the higher wage bracket brings additional stresses.

‘‘With the higher salary comes more options. Considerations then become whether to send kids to a private school, go on overseas holidays or take on more debt to acquire material objects. ‘‘The challenge comes with the competitiveness it creates. If you don’t have those options, ironically, you have a simpler lifestyle.’’ Students earning minimum wage and studying full-time are also doing a juggling act. Monash University peninsula campus student James Fowler, 19, says it is inherently difficult balancing study and work commitments. At exam time it’s high stress all round as students cram to achieve the best results for their final marks. ‘‘If you have a hectic week at university, you can’t work as much and then finding rent becomes a problem,’’ he says. ‘‘People underestimate the financial side of things and how hard it can be to live to a reasonable standard. University isn’t all fun and games. Sometimes it’s a week of Aldi lasagne.’’ He says the key to survival is working out what is important. ‘‘It can be hard keeping everyone happy, whether it is your boss or your university tutor.’’ While he admits he isn’t paying off a mortgage or looking after children, there are still pressures. On a lesser level there is stress but the key is making sure you don’t get overwhelmed by it. ‘‘If it is something you really want to do, you will find the time for it.’’ [WPW]

Foams to the fore in this restaurant Haydn Godony discovers molecular gastronomy is flourishing in Balnarring. ark Poulter is shaping up as the Mornington Peninsula’s answer to renowned chef Heston Blumenthal. Determined to have his restaurant, Veraison, considered to be among the peninsula’s best, Poulter is following the discipline of a ‘new breed’ of chefs, such as Blumenthal, and experimenting in molecular gastronomy. “A lot of our diners come for special occasions, people looking for the ‘best’ place to dine. Mastering the chemistry and physics of ‘wow’ factor presentations including foams, aeration and spherification, will keep us at the contemporary edge. The best modern restaurants are masters of innovation and we are on that path. “Foams can be created from a great variety of ingredients, ranging from parsley to squid ink. They add a dash

of colour and a shot of flavour without the need to alter a dish’s composition. “The foam is an ideal complement for fish or for light meats and for desserts — it’s a perfect marriage.” Poulter’s highly-aerated ice-cream is a little reminiscent of the bubbled texture in an Aero chocolate bar. The violet-flavoured dessert is mauve in colour and prepared from concentrated floral essence. A Veraison dessert in development involves a leading edge technique called spherification. “No other restaurant on the peninsula is doing,’’ Poulter said. ‘‘A liquid is shaped into a sphere, surrounded by a thin membrane and when you eat it, it is like an explosion of flavour in your mouth.’’ The new dessert is called ‘spring

I have often shared my belief with students that it is important for each of us to identify our heroes, as a way of helping to discover who we want to be ourselves. Often our heroes are chosen for their bravery, brilliance, selflessness or for their accomplishments. As well as helping to define ourselves, our heroes are often people in whose footsteps we hope to follow. Over the years, many Peninsula students have gone on to compete at State and National levels in many different sports. It was with great pride that our community recently cheered on three of our past students in the London Olympics. We very much salute Sam Griffiths (Class of ’90), Dale Stevenson (2005) and Matson Lawson (2010) who represented Australia in Equestrian, Shot Put and Swimming respectively. These alumni have certainly provided inspiration for our current students who followed their progress carefully over the course of the Games. A brilliant achievement by our newest sporting heroes who will no doubt now be people who many others wish to emulate in the years to come.

Toorak College leads the way to excellence in learning through our innovation and focus on the individual. We believe that the job of a great independent school is to develop the spirit, values and individual personalities of each student.

It’s busy times at Penbank School with much to do and learn. Inspired by the Olympic Games, the students have had the opportunity to explore the notion of the true champion. The school’s Performance Arts Program has incorporated this focus in a complete program of activities whereby students have chosen an area of the Arts as an interest. Drama and improvisation, music, puppetry making with the Polyglot Theatre Company has all provided choices for students that will be highlighted with an evening’s showcase of their work. It is a pleasure to see such active engagement and interest in learning. I congratulate all Penbank students for their enthusiasm to learn!

TWO AT ONE BLOW! - THE POWER OF AUCTION Last Saturday we conducted an Auction at 8 Bataan Court in Hastings where two keen bidders were locked in a contest for the property. After the fall on the hammer Wilma Green introduced the under bidder to the home around the corner at 10 Barcoo Street which had been listed with another agent for 60 days. This was sold in less than 24 hours. The disappointed buyer purchased the property immediately with the result that both properties were sold on the same afternoon on a cash 30 days basis.

Symons extolled the developments as further emphasising the many positives to come out of the 2010 merger. “We believe that ours was already the strongest racing club in Australia, and this fantastic news only reinforces that claim. “The Melbourne Racing Club is underpinned by a desire to provide our members and stakeholders, as well as participants and punters, with unparalleled standards in our racing product and associated services. ‘‘The increase in prizemoney to the Centrebet Mornington Cup, and across the entire day, serves to satisfy that desire. We are very proud today.” Mornington Racing Club advisory group chairman Tony Hancy agreed, saying: “The improvements to the quality of racing and facilities at Mornington racecourse have been immeasurable in the past couple of years. ‘‘The course is now considered by many to be the Mornington Peninsula’s premier entertainment venue,” he said.

MORNINGTON Cup day will be Victoria’s first regional race day to offer $1 million or more in prizemoney, the Melbourne Racing Club has announced. As part of a Mornington Millions announcement, the club also announced a $50,000 increase on the total prize pool in the Centrebet Mornington Cup, reinforcing its position as the state’s most lucrative country cup. From next year, cup contestants will be racing for a share of $350,000 as well as ballot exemption from the BMW Caulfield Cup later that year, making the race the most important on the Australian calendar to be held outside a metropolitan area. The rise in prizemoney further indicates the benefit of the amalgamation of the Melbourne and Mornington clubs and comes in the wake of the Australian Pattern Committee’s recommendation that the $250,000 Inglis Premier — be granted restricted listed status. Young Panthers pip Sorrento BY MORGAN COLE PEARCEDALE has given Sorrento a major jolt before the Nepean League finals, upsetting the flag fancy by eight points at Pearcedale Recreation Reserve on Saturday. Panthers senior coach Ben Cadd was full of praise for his young outfit and said the victory over the Sharks juggernaut gave his team some momentum heading into next season. ‘‘We have played some pretty good footy over the past four to five weeks,’’ Cadd said. ‘‘We just burrowed in to get the win.’’ Pearcedale had the Sharks on the back foot for most of the day, with Daniel Murray vital up forward for the Panthers with four majors. Damien Janssen did a superb job shadowing Sharks gun Leigh Treeby, but Grant Johnson was able to cover for Treeby, collecting more than 40 disposals for the Sharks. Sorrento forward Jayden Tomkins was solid up front with three goals, the 16 year old feeding off power forward Leigh Poholke, who was well covered by the Panthers’ defence. The Sharks managed to edge themselves in front in the final term, getting out to a 10-point lead with only a few minutes remaining, before the Panthers surged. A three-goal flurry, one coming after the siren, had the Panthers steal victory from the Sharks. Sor-

back into the game in the second half, applying a hard tag to Potts allowing them to wrangle back control of the match. Redlegs Dan Gormley and Ben Landry toiled hard in the midfield, Landry added three majors in a beston-ground performance, and Sam Gill was again a rock in defence. Pines defender Guy Hendry’s move up forward continued to pay dividends for the Pythons, the big man booting three majors, taking his tally to 36 for the year. Veteran Pines coach Steve Ryan played his seventh match for the season, chipping in with two majors to show he still has the ability to play at a high level. Prolific Pines midfielder Chris Guganovic gave his team plenty of drive from the centre despite fighting overwhelming odds against the talented Redlegs’

Claringbold was disappointed with the loss but was not overly concerned with his side’s form going into the finals. ‘‘You would rather go into the finals off a win,’’ Claringbold said. ‘‘Our form throughout the year has been good enough to hold onto the top spot and we’ve still got some talent to come in.’’ Cadd said the win was a reward for perseverance. ‘‘It gives the club and the community plenty of incentive to stick around. It’s a great platform for us to launch from next year.’’ In other Nepean League matches , Crib Point snuffed out Frankston Bombers’ finals aspirations with a 23-point win, however the win was still not enough to ensure a finals berth for the Pies, Rye holding onto fifth place with its healthy percentage. Rosebud has put its best foot forward going into finals defeating Rye by 39 points. Red Hill has closed out its season with a disappointing loss to Devon Meadows, going down by 38 points. Tyabb has snapped its eight-game losing streak to close its year with a 27-point win over Somerville, Cranbourne recruit Ryan Jones leading the way for the Yabbies with another best-on-ground performance. Hastings outgunned Dromana by 16 points in a low-scoring affair. For more MPNFL photos, visit peninsulaweekly.com.au.

midfield. The Pines pushed hard in the final term to take the big scalp but the Redlegs kept producing the answers. The Redlegs have been boosted by the return of Sandringham forward Michael Lourey, who has kicked 18 goals in the past five weeks. Mt Eliza is second on the table, one game behind Frankston YCW, who it hosts in the final round of the year on Saturday. The Pines take on premiership contender Karingal. In other Peninsula League matches, Mornington held on to defeat a fastfinishing Langwarrin, winning by 10 points. Karingal forward Chris Hay booted 10 majors as the Bulls crushed Chelsea by 125 points. Frankston YCW accounted for Seaford with a 55-point victory. Bonbeach secured its place in September with a 17-point victory over Edithvale-Aspendale.

One more win for Steelers to take championship series WESTERN Port Steelers clinched the first win of the Big V State Youth League 2 championship series over McKinnon at Somerville Recreation Centre on Saturday night. The 16-point victory came on the back of the Steelers defence which kicked into over drive in the second half as Western Port stormed home. just come to his team after the Steelers got off to a shaky start. ‘‘I wasn’t satisfied with how we started,’’ Brunner said. ‘‘Maybe it was nerves I don’t know but we picked up in the second half.’’ Western Port Big man Sean Hogenbirk had uncharacteristic night, struggling to make an impact only managing the six points and four rebounds. ‘‘He [Hogenbirk] was a little frustrated he couldn’t work himself

into the game,’’ Brunner said. ‘‘We aren’t a team built around just couple of guys, so I am happy to sit guys down and change things up.’’ Steelers’ forward Troy Molloy had solid night night with eight rebounds but had his hands full with Cougars big man Michael Osekowski who pulled down a monstrous 18 rebounds. Redlegs survive a barrage from the Pines PINES narrowly fell short of staging a major upset with a nine-point loss to Mt Eliza in a Peninsula League clash at Eric Bell Reserve on Saturday. Pines were bolstered by a rare appearance from Frankston Dolphins co-captain Luke Potts. The Pines product was prolific with an explosive first half. Mt Eliza got out to a 19-point first quarter lead but the Pines made all the play in the second term, stunning the Redlegs with a seven goals to one term. The Redlegs were able to work their way back into the match in the third, Mt Eliza coach Jason Watts praising the efforts of the under-18s players that have taken up senior roles. ‘‘We stepped away from what makes us a good side,’’ Watts said. ‘‘It was our young kids from the 18s that really impressed us.’’ Mt Eliza captain James Clayton led the Redlegs

impressed by the guard bringing up a season-high seven assists. ‘‘His [Deehan] ability to bring the other into the game was really pleasing,’’ he said. Rhys Featherstone had a productive night from beyond the arc, knocking down five threes taking full advantage of Deehan’s dominance on the floor. The Steelers now travel to McKinnon’s home at Bentleigh High School in a hope of closing out the three-game series. — Morgan Cole
