Security checks hit helpers dock and to open the gates, we now have to have identity cards approved by the federal police. ‘‘These cost $240, so for our three ship visitors and 12 bus drivers, that’s $3600 every two years and for a volunteer organisation, that’s a lot.’’ Hastings Seafarers Centre was established by the The Mission to Seafarers in partnership with the Apostleship of the Sea and Hastings Uniting Church. As ports are industrial sites, crew from visiting ships are not allowed to set foot on the dock and rely on the group to come alongside to pick them up and give them some relief from life aboard ship. In 2011, the group looked after 653 visitors from 70 ships. The centre was open 127 days and there were 228 bus trips. Mr Tearle said 90 per cent of all world trade was carried by sea and there were 1.2 million seafarers on ships around the world. Filipinos made up 28 per cent of the world’s seafarers — by far the largest of any other country. Fellow member Geoff Stockton said the

BY LEE OPITZ FOR 20 years, volunteers at the Hastings Seafarers Centre have provided support and a welcoming smile to visiting international sailors. But the centre’s president Eddie Tearle says the costs involved in members having to undergo security checks every two years to be allowed to work on the docks is draining its limited resources. Group members visit ships passing through Hastings, offering friendship and transportation to crew wanting to visit the township, exchange currency or relax at the centre. The voluntary organisation is totally reliant on the goodwill, financial and practical support of local groups, businesses and individuals, including BlueScope and Esso, which cover many of the club’s costs. However, the biannual maritime security identity cards were a financial strain on members, Mr Tearle said. ‘‘Security has been getting tighter since the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centre [in New York in 2001] and where we used to just let security know we were coming down to the

group provided an invaluable service and should be treated better by the government. ‘‘Why are we being charged to go on board to do a job the government should be doing? Some of these crew come into Hastings and spend up to $1000. It’s good for the town, and good for the country.’’ Flinders federal MP Greg Hunt said he wrote to Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese late last year asking him to consider either waiving the fees for the security clearance checks or providing some sort of funding to cover the costs of the cards but was told that Mr Albanese could not help. “Volunteers at the HSC do a tremendous job of taking care of overseas mariners, who are often vulnerable and lonely after weeks at sea. It’s simply not good enough for minister Albanese to say that he can’t help,’’ Mr Hunt said. ‘‘I understand that the volunteers need security clearances but I believe there is a case for waiving or at least reducing the processing fees in this case. I will continue to pursue this issue.’’

Peninsula planning The Mornington Peninsula will be gone like the Tassie devil if state Planning Minister Matthew Guy gets his way. The deadline for submissions is September 21 but the ministry is playing dead on this issue which could change the Mornington Peninsula forever. They are keeping it very quiet — no information for the public, but informed rumour has it that developers are already buying up around our villages and towns. The new zonings being initiated aim to increase the number of ‘as of right’ commercial uses with no rights of appeal when a large development is to be plonked next to or near residents. This includes no right

to appeal against unlimited hours of operation. Even worse are the proposed changes to the peninsula’s rural zones. In these zones, including farming and the green wedge, all existing limits on tourism based developments will be removed with no new strategy to protect us from overdevelopment. This includes the effects on existing businesses which are sure to be devalued. The existing urban growth boundaries will disappear. The age of the unfettered developer will arrive on the peninsula. The rural landscape once devalued will never return. That’s the thing about planning, development can never be returned to the past. Development — good or bad — is forever. David Gill, former Mornington Shire president

Re: National parks Last time there was a plan to sell off parts of Point Nepean, the community rose up very strongly and stopped it dead in its tracks. Those behind this latest policy change should cast their minds back a few years, and remember exactly what happened. The embarrassing backdown by the Howard government was a huge victory for community action. If this is a preparatory step towards commercial development, it will run into a brick wall.

The community stands ready to stop it again. So, developers be warned. You will go broke if WillB (via web) you get involved in this.

Re: Aldi Somerville Yet another disgraceful, inept, insensitive, inconsiderate decision by what I trust will become the late unlamented Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. Even in these times of a multicultural society, to sell a war memorial site commemorating fallen Australian soldiers to a German company just about takes the biscuit. Roger Lambert, Mornington

Re: Council to open more camp sites Do ratepayers realise that councillors voted at a meeting in Mornington on August 27 [Weekly, September 5] to spend $100,000-plus of our money out of this year’s budget in order to construct another 77 powered camping sites on designated public open space on the Rosebud foreshore? Why weren’t residents informed and given time to object? Why are we paying for cheap holidays for Melburnians when there is no money to repair our roads, drainage and rubbish problems? Early visitor glimpse of what’s to come BY SANDRA BULL WHILE a New Zealand fur seal was causing consternation on a Middle Park road last weekend, a fur seal closer to home was happy to stay put in the water at Flinders pier. The unexpected visitor delighted onlookers, who were already enjoying the sunshine. Jeff Weir, the executive director of the Hastings-based Dolphin Research Institute, said the little seal had probably stopped by the pier while hunting for fish, possibly to get out of the wind. ‘‘The seal would have come just across the road from Flinders at Seal Rock, which is the world’s largest Australasian fur seal colony with a population of more than 20,000,’’ Mr Weir said. Mr Weir said far more young seals could soon be expected to drop by Mornington Peninsula beaches after being ‘‘kicked off’’ Seal Rock by big bulls pegging their territory for the breeding season. ‘‘The yearlings get kicked off to fend for themselves while the pregnant females give birth or

Mr Weir warned people who may come across a seal sunning itself on a beach that they were legally required to stay 30 metres away from the animal. ‘‘On land they can be very aggressive. They’re bigger and stronger than a pit bull basically.’’ He also cautioned any onlookers that seals caused more injuries to people than sharks in our region. ‘‘It’s just a matter of giving them respect and remembering they are predators. ‘‘If you don’t respect them, they will have a go at you.’’

Landing an award: MC Sean Dooley, Somerville Secondary College representatives Catherine Arnold and Josh Blanchard and Port Phillip and Westernport Catchment Management Authority chairman Neville Goodwin at the presentation ceremony.

College wetland work awarded torian Certificate of Applied Learning students who are using the four areas of applied learning — literacy, numeracy, personal development and work-related skills — to rehabilitate the area. Students have developed their skills in weed identification and control, indigenous plant identification, wildlife identification and water quality data collection. With mentoring from project sponsors Leighton Contractors, the youngsters have also developed their understanding of occupational health and safety, consulted local indigenous community members on the site’s history and built nest boxes for wildlife.

Home robberies fall, other crimes rise BY ALECIA PINNER FEWER Mornington Peninsula homes were robbed in the past financial year, but the number of cars stolen, and stolen from, rose dramatically. Victoria Police statistics released last week show the number of residential burglaries dropped 13.2 per cent in the year to June 30, while car thefts jumped 23.1 per cent and thefts from cars rose 43.6 per cent. Mornington Peninsula police inspector Martin Tynan said although the number of residential burglaries had reduced substantially, he was disappointed the number of thefts from vehicles had not also fallen. On the peninsula, 266 cars were stolen and 1337 drivers had items stolen from their cars. ‘‘We have developed a number of strategies to combat this issue and have recently seen a decline in the amount of offences so I believe my report to you all next quarter should have some positive outcomes. I can’t stress to the community enough that this is an opportunistic offence and our intelligence reflects that it occurs primarily at night,

SOMERVILLE Secondary College’s wetlands preservation works were recognised on Saturday at a Port Phillip and Western Port Landcare awards presentation ceremony at Melbourne Zoo, the school winning the young people and education (Mornington Peninsula) category. A wetland with connections to Watson Creek and Yaringa Marine National Park is on the school grounds. These natural assets form part of the Western Port Biosphere which includes the internationally significant Western Port Ramsar Wetlands. The care and management of the college’s wetland forms a vital part of the curriculum for Vic-

by our younger community, upon cars that are unlocked,’’ Inspector Tynan said. ‘‘Again I must ask for the community’s assistance in addressing this crime by properly securing your vehicles and remove any items of value from sight. Don’t assume that because the car is in the driveway that it is safe to leave it unlocked. We cannot do it without the support of our community.’’ There were 99 additional cases of family violence assaults reported to police last year, while assaults, excluding those taking place in family homes, dropped 6.2 per cent. Inspector Tynan said a visible police presence on peninsula streets contributed to the reduction. Overall, crime on the peninsula rose 7.9 per cent last year but, in positive trends, the number of recorded drug offences dropped 4 per cent and nine less people died on peninsula roads between April last year and March. ‘‘I don’t think I will be happy until I can report to you a fatality-free reporting period but if we keep going in the current direction that may not be far away,’’ Inspector Tynan said.

Focusing on the job HEIDI Hunt is determined to become a topnotch chef after experiencing the world of hospitality at two Hastings eateries. After leaving Peninsula Special Developmental School and with the help of employment service Job Focus, Ms Hunt landed a position at Pelican Pantry and is now chef’s assistant at MaQuay. The 19 year old says she loves working with the restaurant’s owner and head chef Rodney Agius and the rest of the staff. ‘‘Rodney’s an awesome boss and I love it here. I have already done a certificate II in hospitality and want to do a certificate III and become a chef.’’ Job Focus is a not-for-profit disability employment service covering Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula. It finds work for people with an intellectual or physical disability and provides ongoing support for employers and employees. Employment co-ordinator Lee Ann Coburn said businesses were subsidised to employ clients and given as much support as required. ‘‘Clients usually do a couple of days work experience to make sure it is a good fit for everyone, and part of our role is to come in

and help tailor the position to suit,’’ she said. ‘‘But while the client is supported, no allowances are made for their disability and they are expected to work as hard as other staff.’’ Mr Agius said he had been delighted with the work of Ms Hunt and Cathy Dalton, 51, another Job Focus client who works for him. ‘‘Both girls are fantastic workers and I would definitely recommend the program to other employers ‘‘I haven’t had to change any work practices. We find out what they are good at and go from there. It’s no different to anyone else. Even chefs have things that they are good at, and weaknesses in other areas.’’ Ms Dalton said she was beginning to think she would never get a job after having a total knee construction. While the operation had relieved the osteoarthritis she had suffered for years, the Langwarrin resident was still struggling physically and finding a job that would cater to her disability seemed impossible. ‘‘I tried all avenues, but job agencies didn’t even try to cater for my needs. That was until somebody told me about Job Focus.’’ After a stint working at the agency, Ms Dalton found a permanent position at MaQuay. ‘‘It’s been fantastic for me. I was getting quite down about not having a job and this

Expect to pay around half the price!

In focus: Heidi Hunt and Cathy Dalton, front, are learning the tricks of the trade from Rodney Agius Picture: Daryl Gordon of MaQuay Restaurant. has given me a whole new outlook on everything.’’ At any one time there are between 200 to 300 Job Focus clients looking for work. Employers wanting to find out more about Job Focus can call the Frankston office on 9784 5888.

‘Carbon’ takes toll on hospital out compensation of any kind and with no ability or opportunity to pass that cost on to patients.” Dunkley federal MP Bruce Billson said the government should be supporting local health providers, not making life harder for them. “After years of careful planning and financial management that has enabled The Bays to invest in new operating facilities, additional hospital beds and an expanded day surgery, the carbon tax has added a huge new expense that needs to be funded,’’ he said. Peninsula Health spokesman John Jukes said the effect of the tax on Frankston and Rosebud hospitals had not been considered when setting their budgets. ‘‘We have to pay the bills anyway,’’ he said. The music that never ages IT’S the kind of music where you just want to pull up a chair, have a drink and get the feet tapping. Local band Verandah is making quite a splash on the peninsula and it’s the two octogenarians leading the group that are mostly responsible. Amateur musicians Jack Kirby, 81, and Ron Willis, 83, had been playing around the traps for years when they decided to hook up and create

their own band in 2007. ‘‘We chose the name Verandah because it’s the kind of music that in the old days would be played on verandahs throughout Australia — folksy, old time music to sing along with like folk, country, bluegrass and mountain music,’’ Kirby said. The group plays on the third Saturday each month at the Dromana Community Hall, from 1-5pm. Entry is a $3 donation.

THE Bays Hospital will be $44,000 poorer this year due to the federal government’s carbon tax, says its chief executive officer. Peter Wilkinson said he was disappointed that the federal government had not considered the huge impact the tax would have on hospital budgets. “Contrary to what the Prime Minister says and suggests, The Bays is unable to pass that cost onto patients. “The hospital funding model is very clear. Health funds and the Department of Veterans Affairs have contracts or agreements which specifically set down what the hospital can charge for each and every procedure and admission. “The Bays is a small, not-for-profit community-owned organisation. The etcher emerges from ravages of war BY LEE OPITZ HE looks like a veteran Errol Flynn, has the talent of Da Vinci, and is a bit of an old bastard, but one thing is for sure, Perry Fletcher’s life has been quite a journey. The Mornington 65 year old is well known for his etchings, ranging from simple messages on jewellery pieces to master works which have adorned the halls of Parliament House. Each is given the same care and attention to detail as the other. It requires a steady hand and clear mind to do what he does, and for a veteran of the Vietnam war, that could have been difficult. But for Fletcher, it is the concentration required to complete his works that allows him to forget the horror of war and still the demons inside. He says it is the experiences of his service, including spending 21⠄2 months alone in a foxhole as the war raged around him, and coming home on a helicopter with the coffins of seven comrades, that has stirred his soul and helped him work from a spiritual place.

His crowning achievement is a piece titled The Last Supper and Border, an engraved depiction of Da Vinci’s famous painting framed by a border and which features 300 figures, 500 scrolls and 30,000 dots. It took him six years to complete. It has adorned the walls of Queens Hall in State Parliament and The Alfred hospital and The Louvre in Paris has also shown interest in displaying it. ‘‘I wanted to create something really beautiful, and I think I did. There is a push at the moment to get it in the Louvre and it would be wonderful if many more people could get pleasure from it. If it happens, it happens,’’ Fletcher said. ‘‘The Last Supper and Border is probably my piece de resistance, but there is still a lot of joy in the small jobs I do. Engravers are messengers, and putting words of love on a wedding ring or engraving a locket is a special thing.’’ Bringing joy to others is what it’s all about says Fletcher— also known as Fletcher the Etcher — whether it be helping a tongue-tied toughie find the right words to put on a locket or painting a picture of an Italian couple’s wedding day 60

years earlier. Other works include etching a commemorative cup for the 1956 Olympics and histories of the Collingwood and Vermont football clubs. And for the past 30 years he has been the official trophy engraver for the Australian Open. His generosity knows no bounds, and much of his art has been donated to good causes — a trait that has been recognised as Bastard of the Year

by the International Order of Old Bastards, a charitable organisation of which he is a member. ‘‘It’s never been about the money. It’s all about making people happy. When I came back from Vietnam I was determined to do three things: value my freedom, be kind, and try to give as much happiness as I can. It has been a journey I never expected.’’

A concerted celebration IT was a beautiful spring day for the inaugural Peninsula School concert for 180 Legacy widows and veterans in Mt Eliza last week. Organised by White Lady Funerals in conjunction with the school, invited guests and their carers were treated to a special lunch and an afternoon of music and stories about Australians at war, at home and abroad. Students and Peninsula School cadets escorted them into the event, as members of the Police Youth Corp Band played in the background. Military vehicles and uniforms, cars and memorabilia from the era were also on display. Legacy is a charity which provides services to Australian families who are suffering financially and socially after the death of a spouse or parent, during or after serving in the defence forces. Concert organiser Tia Worrall said it was important to remember the sacrifices made by women during the wartime years. Army veteran Mervyn Lawrence (Laurie) Hill, 87, spoke about being stationed at Bougainville during the war and the school mates who were ‘Legacy Kids’. “I knew that their fathers had been killed in World War I and I thought it was a marvellous thing then that they did. It’s still marvellous but I do think people have forgotten about them,” Mr Hill said. He and wife Jean now live — Lee Opitz in Mornington.

THE state government says the opposition is ‘‘trying to muddy the waters’’ by questioning plans to develop the Port of Hastings as Victoria’s second major port. Citing environmental concerns and the high cost of transport, the state Labor Party last week called on the state government to reassess the plan, costed by Treasury at more than $12 billion. Labor ports spokesman Tim Pallas said departmental advice obtained through freedom of information stated a Bay West Port between Werribee and Geelong could be cheaper and more viable. Mark Lee, a spokesman for Ports Minister Denis Napthine, said the opposition was just trying to muddy the waters around port development. ‘‘Mr Pallas has quoted the advice very selectively. It says Bay West Port is a

long-term option. That’s certainly the view of the government as well. ‘‘In the short to long term, we are committed to expansion of the Port of Melbourne but in the next 10 to 15 years we’ll need another container port and that will be the Port of Hastings. ‘‘With any port development there are going to be logistical challenges. We’ve identified the Western Port corridor as being the most likely link.’’ Mr Lee said the Port of Hastings Authority would spend the next four years or so investigating transport options. ‘‘But that part is 10 to 15 years away. We’d be looking at technology that might not be available now. We don’t want to restrict ourselves to the technology of last century. ‘‘Mr Pallas wrote a paper in 2009 that stated ‘No other port in Victoria offers the same overall benefit as the Port of Hastings’.’’

FEATURESTORY

And the beat goes on They’re police, but their mission is music and making people feel good, writes LORETTA HALL. t can be a glamorous life fronting a showband, but this is not one of those days. The band’s equipment truck, emptied of trunks of brass instruments and sound gear, doubles as a hasty change-room for Elise Beattie as she transforms from “worker ant” roadie to lead singer in a shopping mall in Melbourne’s east. Long loose hair is secured in a no-nonsense plait, and casual clothing discarded for navy trousers, sensible flat black shoes and a crisp light-blue shirt with an epaulette and stripe on each shoulder. Only the showbiz shades remain from her civilian guise as Beattie prepares to front the Victoria Police Showband with fellow senior constable Daina Jowsey under the midday sun for the mostly unsuspecting shoppers and commuters of Box Hill. Music director (and prominent Melbourne musician) Daryl McKenzie is absent, so Beattie and Jowsey consult over a whiteboard song list and a takeaway coffee while fellow band members set up 500 leads and an array of instruments for the gig. They choose songs from hundreds of the band’s own arrangements, mixing swing with jazz, classical, musical theatre, rock and pop. Beattie is down for Adele’s Rolling in the Deep, Jowsey is opening with Dancing in the Street. Together. they will close with what Beattie says is a crowd favourite, The Flower Duet, a soaring soprano aria from French opera Lakme. It is one of the tracks they performed for the Showband’s Divas CD, sales of which aid the police force’s Blue Ribbon Foundation community program. There are a few curious glances from passersby as Beattie completes her assigned chores and sets up the microphones. But once she emerges from the back of the truck an audience begins to gather and several shoppers question the diminutive but authoritative figure at the microphone stand. “As soon as you are in uniform there’s a certain level of interest; people come up and ask what you are doing,” Beattie says. “We explain to them that what we are doing is a full-time job.” It has been a full-time occupation since the 1980s, when professional musicians were first sworn in as police members. When the police band originated 120 years ago it was formed by those on the beat who volunteered to play an instrument part-time. In the 1980s, Beattie was singing Grizabella’s Memory from the musical Cats on Box Hill school Our Lady of Sion College’s stage, dressed in a black leotard with a newspaper-stuffed tail. “It’s not like it was here when I was at school [in Box Hill],” Beattie says. “It’s a bit different now; there is a big drug problem and a lot of youth unemployment. “In the break, people talk about bad experiences they have had living around here, and their experiences with police. You get comments like,

I

Captivating performer: Elise Beattie Pictures: Darrian Traynor before the show.

‘I usually hate coppers but youse are all right’. “A lot of what we do is PR, and the music reaches people and you see smiles on their faces. “Our primary role is to perform for graduations and police functions, but otherwise we perform at anything community-based that benefits the community.” The showband plays across Melbourne and regional Victoria and its members come from all suburbs across Melbourne, from Eltham to Sandringham. Gig locations this year have included the city’s Federation Square, Nunawading, Ashburton, St Kilda, Williamstown, Frankston, Emerald Lake, Geelong, Swan Hill and Castlemaine. There are school performances, too, and the public can check the police website for the showband’s calendar for a performance in their neighbourhood. More glitzy gigs include charity nights, when Beattie frocks up to perform at venues that have included Crown’s Palladium room, Hamer Hall and Melbourne’s World Congress Centre. Beattie, 46, has been on patrol with the showband around Victoria for 11 years and previously sang with the Victoria Police’s rock band Code One for six years. In January, her role in the police force was recognised with a national award for “rockin’ it”. She wears the stripe of a senior constable “and we have full police powers of arrest”. But, as with the rest of the 24 showband members, Beat-

tie says she is not operational as a police officer. Band leader Sergeant Pat Hudson, who has in the past been in the back-row line-up on trombone, watches from beyond the police-taped stage edge as the party gets started. Music spills into the mall and an audience builds. Most of the smoking section — a halfbrick wall outside the supermarket — is full. Hudson says that at the height of the set about 200 people are toe-tapping to the tunes. The youth of Box Hill that the showband is reaching out to largely respond to the offer of musical friendship, with most unplugging at least one earphone to catch a Lady Gaga or Beyonce song. An older fan, Robert Fraser, 59, dances through all three sets, oblivious to the fact he is mostly dancing solo on the pavement. Fraser is a regular at showband gigs, says Hudson. A middle-aged woman kicks off her heels, dumps her handbag under the watchful gaze of the band’s brass section and joins him for a track. Towards the end of the last set, a trio of teens lose their inhibitions and let their lanky limbs loose. Fans can find performance dates on the police website, which also lists gigs for the other two police bands, Code One and the Victoria Police Pipe Band, which brings bagpipes and drums to many Melbourne parades. Collectively, the three bands perform about 500 gigs a year and reach about 650,000

Victorians a year. “One of the things the band does is to go find people who can’t come to us,” Hudson says. ‘‘Often it’s in an unstable environment not particularly conducive to bands.” In times of hardship and disaster, the showband is dispatched to communities where an uplifting tune can bring some cheer or relief in tough times. “When there were floods in country Victoria a year ago we had a week-long tour in those regions and based ourselves in Horsham. We were bused out to country towns I had never heard of and all 50 people in the town came to see us. When we do a show for them it’s the only thing that has made them smile in a long time.” The performances are not all about the music and Beattie spends a lot of time talking to locals. “That’s experiential contact,’’ says Hudson. ‘‘The audience doesn’t just see a copper in a uniform. They see Elise sing and talk to them and take a positive experience from it.” Beattie recalls a big community memorial service after the 9/11 attacks in the US. ‘‘Lots of American expats and government officials were there. I sang the Australian anthem and Daina sang the American anthem. It was one of the hardest things I have had to do. There was not a dry eye in the place. “After events like that you go home and have a cry. At those emotional gigs, that’s when your professional experience comes flooding back because you have got to concentrate on getting the job done.” In addition to Cats, Beattie took lead roles in her school’s Gilbert and Sullivan productions and studied voice at Melba Conservatorium and primary teaching in music at Victoria College. She gained professional experience with Dame Joan Sutherland in Othello for the Australian Opera (now Opera Australia) and with The Wiggles in front of a crowd of 80,000. “I still have singing lessons because it is important that our music is as high a standard as it can be,” Beattie says. “Being with the band involves a regimented lifestyle, especially for the singers to stay fit and healthy. “In a 10-day fortnight we get four days off, and those 10 days can be at any time. We spend many hours travelling . . . being on tour with the band on the bus is like being in a sitcom. There are some incredibly funny personalities.”

Echo of the ’80s An iconic band will soon perform its old hits and throw in a few new numbers, Haydn Godony reports conic ’80s band Pseudo Echo will headline the musical program at next month’s Harvest ’n’ Graze Festival in Mt Eliza. Pseudo Echo front man Brian Canham now spends most days working from his own studio in Kew, although he enjoys visiting the Mornington Peninsula, often to go diving. “Although I put Pseudo back together for a ‘sip’ in the ’90s, it feels like we’ve been constantly together in a way. We have recently had a couple of sell-out shows in Adelaide and at The Corner hotel in Richmond,’’ Canham said. ‘‘There has been a lot of line-up changes along the way, that’s kept it interesting. Where the band has landed now is just fantastic, which is largely why we have injected some new stuff.’’ New songs, retaining Pseudo’s hallmark synthesiser riffs, include Fighting the Tide and Suddenly Silently. “An album is on the cards, it’s just a matter of the logistics — it’s exactly what we want to do. Having my own studio will make it easier. I won’t

have to bring in an external producer, for example. Years ago you had to have a major record deal to be able to do an album; all the same, we’ll have to put a lot of time aside to do it. “Creatively I’ve got to be in the right frame to write the rest of the album. Everything has to align. With the guys [in the band] it’s never been better, so it’s definitely the right time.’’ In the ’80s the band’s visual image was a big factor. Today, musical integrity is foremost. “I’d still say I’m image conscious; I like the band to have a ‘look’, even though it’s dulled down, it is something I think about,” Canham said. “I think we also take each gig a bit more seriously now, rather than just being the routine ‘retro show’ that it was for a long time. ‘‘We have a lot of fun on stage and the chemistry is the best it’s ever been. We love being onstage and we love jamming with each other. ‘‘We mix the set up with the old singles, the new songs and a few we have never played before. We feel like we’re on a mission.”

Pseudo Echo: Brian Canham on lead vocals, guitar and keyboards, Ben Grayson on synthesiser, drummer Darren Danielson and Simon Rayner on bass-synth and harmony vocals.

BMW 118d makes for dream touring Ewan Kennedy road tests the German marque’s little convertible BMW convertible: sun up, top down, wandering along quiet scenic roads in the last days of winter in south-east Queensland. Life doesn’t come much better than this. So we decided to make a weekend of it and dawdled up to Noosa. After driving for more than 500 kilometres the little 118d convertible was still showing about a third of a tank of diesel left. The efficiency of all current BMW diesels is extremely impressive. Fit a little 2.0-litre diesel engine unit into a lightish car and fuel consumption in the low fives is there for the asking. On our holiday trip the fuel consumption was in the mid five litres per hundred kilometres range. With the roof closed, therefore making for better aerodynamics, it would be easy to get the fuel consumption down into the high fours. The second generation of BMW’s 1 Series was released in Australia in October 2011 in hatchback form. But the convertible in which we have just spent a most enjoyable week is carried over

A

from the previous generation. Exterior changes to the shape of the new-gen 1 Series hatchbacks are relatively minor. Having a soft-top rather than a folding hardtop in the modern manner means the little Bimmer looks like a ‘proper’ convertible. A hardtop with the roof raised looks like just another coupe. The 1 Series is the smallest in the BMW range and in convertible format, interior space is further compromised by the need to provide space into which the roof can be lowered. All these apparent handicaps are soon forgotten when we threw ‘our’ BMW 118d at hard corners on demanding roads in quiet hilly areas. Superb balance is immediately obvious, as are responsive steering and huge amounts of cornering grip. Those who put sheer driving pleasure ahead of all else will simply love every moment they spend behind the wheel. Prices start at $53,200, not including government or dealer delivery charges.

Top down and sun up: The little BMW is just the thing for the good life.

Send-offs put paid to Bonbeach chances BY MORGAN COLE KARINGAL has advanced to a do-or-die MPNFL Peninsula League battle this Sunday. The Bulls notched a 35-point victory over Bonbeach in their semi-final at Eric Bell Reserve on Saturday. The Bulls were keen to make the most of their second chance after going down to Mt Eliza in last week’s qualifying final but were greeted by fierce resistance early. Karingal opened the game up in the second term when the Sharks were severely weakened by having three players, including captain Shane McDonald, sent off.

The send-offs all happened within minutes, one player being sent to the bench for wearing a nose ring.. Karingal took full advantage of the depleted Sharks side. Bonbeach coach Steve Capp was disappointed with the result but praised his players’ resilience in keeping themselves in the match despite at one stage only having 15 on the field. ‘‘The effort they put in was phenomenal,’’ Capp said. ‘‘We kept [Karingal] scoreless for a bit but we just chewed up too much energy.’’ The Bulls came into the game undermanned, missing a number of key players including midfielders Michael Burke, Stephen Charalambous

and ruckman Grant Goodall. Karingal chairman of selectors Jason Hammond was pleased with his team’s efforts despite the absence of key players, with midfielder James Tyquin gaining particular praise. ‘‘James Tyquin has been in stellar form and had another super performance,’’ Hammond said. The clear best afield for the Bulls was key forward Chris Hay, who booted eight majors for the day, taking his season tally to 91 goals. The Sharks kept in touch in the third term, willing themselves back into the match. Shaun Foster was a pillar of strength, providing a solid target up forward.

The Bulls came home strongly in the final quarter, outscoring the brave Sharks five goals to two to claim their place in the preliminary final. Difficulties overcome, Tigers set for flag fight SOUTH Mornington will start warm favourites in the Victorian Amateur Football Association division 4 grand final against Swinburne University on Saturday. The club formed in 2005 playing its first two seasons in the Southern Football League before joining the VAFA and has had mixed levels of success. The club had a tumultuous season in 2011, losing its senior coach mid-season but has since healed the wounds bringing in some strong recruits over the summer. Two of the biggest additions to the Tigers’ line-up has come through former Mt Eliza player Nathan Brodie and former Mornington midfielder Stuart Cunnginham, coach Mark Green praising the pair’s efforts since arriving. ‘‘They have been really important to us,’’ Green said. ‘‘They come from a really good standard of footy [MPNFL].’’ The club finished on top with a 16-2 win record, and win or lose this Saturday the Tigers will enter a new frontier next season when they move up to Division 3 in the VAFA. The location for the grand final is still yet to be determined.

Tigers look to end ‘dry’

Sharks contain gutsy Demons

DROMANA is seeking to break a 41-year premiership drought this Saturday when it takes on reigning premiers Sorrento in the MPNFL Nepean League grand final. The last time the Tigers appeared on the big stage was in 2008 which ended in heartbreak, losing to Sorrento which has played in every grand final since 2008, winning all bar 2009. Dromana coach Gavin Artico is relaxed going into the biggest game of year, remaining firm on the strategies that have taken the Tigers to the grand final this season. ‘‘We will just pick our side based on the best 22 players we think will contribute,’’ he said. ‘‘The boys know what they have to do.’’ The Sharks will be looking to create their own piece of history at Frankston Park on Saturday when they are pushing to take home their third straight premiership cup. ‘‘The stakes are really high for both clubs,’’ Artico said. Sorrento ended rivals Rye’s finals campaign on Saturday , the Sharks showed ominous signs with gun players Leigh Treeby, Tyrren Head and Josh Moore all influential in the win. Sorrento coach Nick Claringbold was pleased with his team’s victory over Rye but planned to leave no stone unturned in the lead-up to the grand final. ‘‘Dromana are a great side, they have depth well beyond the 22,’’ Claringbold said. ‘‘They lose a player and they can replace him with someone who is just as effective.’’ Dromana and Sorrento will square on the big stage at 2.30pm at Frankston Park on Saturday.

SORRENTO has secured the chance to defend its crown, defeating a valiant Rye by 17 points in their Nepean League preliminary final at Olympic Oval on Saturday. The Sharks’ fifth successive grand final will be against Dromana, with the match played at Frankston Oval on Saturday. in the preliminary final, the long-time rivals promised a fierce contest and it lived up to the billing with Sorrento taking a slender first-quarter lead. The biggest threat to the Demons was the Sharks’ height in the forward half. Sorrento sought to expose the Rye defence with the likes of big men Tyrren Head and Ben Schwarze. The spark came through midfielder Josh Moore, who pushed forward and provided a reliable avenue to goal and further stretched the Rye defence. Sharks coach Nick Claringbold believes it was a matchwinning move. “We thought we had an advantage up forward so we thought if we could win or just break even out of the centre we would have the edge,” he said. Despite being outmatched for height, the Rye defence worked tirelessly at ground level. Darren Booth led the way and Cameron Dunn kept Sharks’ big man Schwarze in check.

Justin Van Unen made the most of his opportunities when the Demons made their forays forward, the star booting seven majors, finishing his season with a staggering 121 goals. Rye coach Ben Holmes hit back at strong rumours that Van Unen was set to play at VFL club Frankston next season, saying his gun forward had signed for next year. Sorrento made its major play in the second term, Leigh Treeby taking control in the midfield and Josh Moore and Head punishing the scoreboard. The Demons stayed in the contest in the second quarter getting two late reprieves, one coming through Van Unen, who kept the Demons in touch going into half-time. Despite the match being mainly played on Sorrento’s terms, the Demons worked their way back in the third term cutting the lead to 23 points. Rye coach Ben Holmes was pleased with his team’s resilience under the duress. “The third was all about gritting the teeth and fighting it out,’’ he said. The charge was on and the dream is over for Stingrays DANDENONG Stingrays crashed out of the TAC Cup finals, losing to Oakleigh Chargers on Sunday. The Chargers set up a date with North Ballarat Rebels this weekend with an impressive 18.7 (115) to 10.9 (69) win over the Stingrays in an elimination semi-final at Visy Park, Carlton yesterday. Chargers region manager Mark Smart praised the team for its speedy ball use and attention to detail against the Stingrays. He said the Chargers had identified the need to

target their kicks into their forward 50-metre line accurately and keep the Stingrays defenders from being able to spoil. ‘‘The lads moved the ball forward with real speed and kicked to dangerous areas,’’ he said. Jason Pongracic had 20 disposals, 10 marks and two goals while Lachie Whitfield had 18 disposals and five marks to lead the Stingrays. Chargers midfielder Luke McDonald led the way for his side with 29 disposals and eight marks while

highly touted midfielder-forward Jackson Macrae had 28 disposals, five marks and a goal along with Ryan Exon, who had 25 disposals, six marks and three goals.
