Accident alert: Leonie Clark with her children Bryce, Owen, Rhett and Gwen, in Davies Road, Bittern. Passing cars are almost veering onto the opposite side of the road in an attempt to avoid road damage. Picture: Gary Sissons

Being driven around the bend BY SAMANTHA ROBIN RESIDENTS of Davies Road, Bittern, are worried about their safety with a surge in trucks making deliveries to the Somers sewage treatment plant. What was a quiet street until six weeks ago is now frequented by up to 10 trucks a day between 7.30am and 2.30pm. Residents say the trucks have had a massive impact on a tranquil neighbourhood and caused major damage to the road, which isn’t coping well with the additional traffic. Leonie Clark said she was worried about the safety of her five children, one of whom is learning to drive. ‘‘I’m concerned there is going to be an accident with one of the trucks.’’ Mrs Clark is also worried about the safety of her younger children, aged three and six months. ‘‘I walk with them along the road most days and I have to shield them in the pram from the dust when the trucks go past.’’

The speed limit on Davies Road is 90km/h and there are a few sharp bends, making it difficult to navigate. ‘‘Sections of the road have been torn up from the trucks and there are potholes that weren’t there before,’’ Mrs Clark said. Her neighbour Shelley King, whose children are aged nine and seven, is also worried about safety. ‘‘Lots of people walk up and down the road, especially parents with little kids, and bike riders,’’ she said. ‘‘There is no shoulder on the road. It’s just grass, so there has been a lot of damage from the trucks. The road just isn’t designed for these types of heavy vehicles.’’ Ms King said trucks often came around the corner on the opposite side of the road. ‘‘They take up the whole road when they come round the corner, so if you were coming the other way you’d be in trouble.’’ The constant noise from the trucks using their air-brakes also detracts from the otherwise quiet street.

A South East Water spokeswoman said the increased truck traffic was caused by extra pressure on another plant. ‘‘The sewage treatment process produces a thick sludge, which needs to go through a drying process. Wet weather in recent years has reduced our capacity to dry the sludge. As a result, we have a higher volume of sludge at Mt Martha than we can dry. This means we’ve needed to transport some of the sludge to our Somers treatment plant, which has available capacity.’’ She said South East water was looking at other options and apologised for the inconvenience to residents. ‘‘We’ve adjusted our transport schedule so the trucks will use alternative routes. ‘‘We have spoken to the transport company and asked for their assistance in reducing the potential impact on residents and hope to reduce the volumes travelling along Davies Road in Somers by close to 50 per cent.’’ She expected the sludge transport to be completed within the next month.

Protect plovers from dogs Hooded plovers are nesting at the moment on the Mornington Peninsula foreshores. They deserve all the help they can get, and need to be protected from dogs that are left running free by unthinking dog owners. There is a move to allow dogs into national parks at the moment by our ‘environmentally responsible’ state government which, among other things, lets cattle back into the high country and are hell-bent on attacking the green wedges through their review of planning law.

Further to an article on your website, ‘Euthanasia is just a bridge too far’, the paediatrician and now NSW politician Andrew McDonald says: “I would certainly be reluctant to do it myself. Mr McDonald is ignoring the fact that the key word with any euthanasia legislation is voluntary. No doctor, nurse or patient is obliged to take part in any way, but a change in the law would give those suffering severely with a terminal illness a choice. Mr McDonald is also quoted as saying: ‘‘I’m comfortable providing palliative care, which involves adequate analgesics. Quite frankly, that

statement is simplistic, even naive. Current palliative practice in extreme cases, providing the patient has a supportive doctor, is “terminal sedation, where the person dying is put into a coma until they starve or dehydrate to death. If I personally was at that stage, I would like the legal option to choose a quicker death. Mr McDonald would be welcome to not request the quicker death if he wished, but what God-given right has he to use his power and vote in Parliament to deny me and 80 per cent of Australians their say in their death? Fond farewell, and 66 chimes, for firey BY SANDRA BULL SOMERVILLE fire station was the perfect setting for the funeral of much loved firey Michael McGivern last week. Mr McGivern, who died on October 24 after battling cancer, was a CFA volunteer for about 30 years, including a 14-year stint at the Frankston fire station before moving to Somerville. A bell was tolled at the funeral 66 times — once for every year of Mr McGivern’s life. His wife Janet said: ‘‘It was such a beautiful day. If he was looking down, he would have had a big grin.’’ Mr McGivern joined the CFA at the suggestion of his sons, Jonathan and Paul, in the aftermath of Ash Wednesday. His long history of firefighting included travelling to Kinglake in 2009 to help combat the Black Saturday inferno. Mrs McGivern described the CFA ‘‘as one big family’’. When it became clear that her husband would not survive to receive a national medal for his dedicated CFA service at the Somerville brigade’s annual dinner in November, arrangements were made for a surprise presentation at the Frankston brigade’s dinner last month.

A MOOROODUC winery has been stripped of its Royal Melbourne Wine Show trophies after an audit showed it failed to meet a key entry requirement. Jones Road Nepean Chardonnay 2011 had been named this year’s winner of the Francois De Castella Trophy for best young white wine and the Dan Murphy trophy for best chardonnay. But a wine show statement released on Saturday week said Jones Road had since been disqualified ‘‘due to failing to meet the minimum requirements of entry’’. Under the rules, wines entered in these classes must have a minimum volume of 250 cases for commercial sale at the time of entry to the show. Jones Road founder and principal Rob Frewer told the Weekly that all those involved with the winery were saddened by what had been an honest mistake. ‘‘There was an oversight as we did

not produce 250 dozen cases. It was our first big show and just makes us more determined to keep producing first class wines.’’ Wine show committee chairman Phil Sexton said: ‘‘We are disappointed. Integrity and accuracy of our wine show results is of paramount importance. With more than 3000 wines from 557 exhibitors entered into our show, we have a random audit process that this year focused on the regions of Great Western, Victoria, and McLaren Vale, South Australia.’’ Mr Sexton said the onus was on the winery when entering the show to provide the correct details on each entry, including confirming the minimum bottle volumes for their wine. ‘‘Inaccurate entries, regardless of the intent of the winery, cannot be allowed and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria took immediate action in this instance to validate the information it had received as part of the audit process and acted accordingly.’’

INBRIEF Man charged with rape

A man has been charged with three counts of rape and abduction after an incident in Hastings earlier this year. Shannon Aitken, 38, of Hastings, was arrested by police on Tuesday last week and remanded in custody after appearing in Frankston Magistrates Court. He then appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday when the matter was adjourned to February 22. No plea was entered. Police allege the sexual assault happened about 5am on March 4 when a teenage girl was walking along High Street, Hastings.

Pharmacy burgled Police are seeking to talk to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity outside Red Hill Pharmacy about midnight last Thursday. Burglars smashed the shop’s front window and stole medication. Information to Rosebud police on 5986 0462.

Car, bus collision A 72 year old Red Hill South woman is assisting police with their inquiries following a collision between a bus and a car on Nepean Highway, near Bungower Road, in Mornington, about 9.25am last Thursday. Both drivers were unharmed, but three passengers on the bus suffered minor injuries. Two were taken to Rosebud Hospital for treatment.

Cuts ‘a risk to firefighters’ WITH a hot summer approaching, some Country Fire Authority brigade members believe funding cuts have reached the frontline and are putting local firefighters and the public at risk. There are 26 CFA stations in Frankston and across the Mornington Peninsula, including Western Port. They operate within the southeastern metropolitan service area, one of the busiest in Victoria. Last month’s announcement that $41 million would be cut from state funding to the CFA came with assurances from Emergency Services Minister Peter Ryan that frontline service delivery would not be compromised. The Weekly, however, has been contacted by a volunteer CFA member who raised concerns that brigades were already feeling the pinch from funding cuts. The member, who did not want to be identified, said the CFA had chosen to only supply new editions of Melway maps to brigades in areas that had experienced high population growth. The member expressed fears that this could compromise the ability of firefighters to

quickly attend fires in suburbs other than where they were based, particularly as navigation units were not a standard fitment to fire trucks. United Firefighters Union secretary Peter Marshall said the concerns were consistent with complaints the union had received from other members about recycled Melways, uniforms and training cutbacks. “We’ve been getting a lot of calls, and this comes on the back of a royal commission because 173 lives and 2000 homes were lost.’’ ‘‘Volunteer and career firefighters just can’t get to jobs. ‘‘They should all have new Melways and get there quickly with the right gear. These cutbacks were done under a cloak of darkness. There was no consultation with firefighters or the community. We should never put a cost on human life.’’ Mr Marshall said an independent panel recently recommended that Frankston, Mornington and Rosebud brigades should each get five more career firefighters but the government was refusing to make the positions permanent. “This would make the minimum number of career firefighters on duty at any one time up

from 99 to 114 within the CFA’s area of coverage but the government has refused to make them mandatory. ‘‘The additional career firefighters already delivered can be pulled at any time. ‘‘Frankston, Mornington and Rosebud are being denied increased fire protection which is needed because of increased demand and complexity of call outs and population growth,” Mr Marshall said. In response to funding cuts, many local CFA members told the Weekly it was “early days”, and impacts were still unclear. One member felt that the issue had been “beaten up”. It made sense to recycle turn-out gear valued at $3500 a kit, if it was in a suitable condition, he said. A CFA spokesman said the organisation’s commitment to maintaining its level of service to the community and volunteers underpinned all decisions. “The CFA supplies the most recent Melway to brigades in areas where new roads have been created. ‘‘This has been the practice for many years and is unrelated to CFA’s budget position. All brigades have Melways no older than two years.’’

POLICE are appealing for the author of an anonymous letter, received by a Red Hill restaurateur the day his pet dog was shot, to come forward. Max Paganoni, of Max’s restaurant, told Radio 3AW last week that his four-year-old miniature dachshund, Levi, still felt warm when he discovered him dead about 7.45 pm at his Red Hill home on October 31. ‘‘I’m devastated,’’ Mr Paganoni said. ‘‘There’s somebody walking around in a country town with a gun and happy to use it.’’ He said Levi was a friendly dog who would have happily trotted up to the mesh fence on his property. It appeared the shooter stuck the gun through the fence to fire a fatal shot to Levi’s stomach. A second pet miniature dachshund, Zucker, was uninjured. Detective Senior Constable Megan Whitelaw of the Rosebud crime investigation unit said an anonymous letter complaining about the dogs barking at horses passing by had been received by Mr Paganoni in

FEATURESTORY

Mates in the service Three men, three generations, three wars. To mark Remembrance Day on Sunday, LEE OPITZ spoke to veterans Fred Smith, 92, John Biles, 65, and Nick Smedley, 26, about their experiences and memories as Australian soldiers. FRED SMITH

F

red (Lofty) Smith still has the bearing of a soldier who knows his drill. Tall and lanky, he looks far younger than his 92 years. It is when you hear his story and he shows a photograph of himself and the other 99 reinforcements for the 2/40th Battalion that you realise how lucky he is to be here at all. “There’s only two of us left now,” he says. Fred was only 19 when he signed up to join the army. “Things were going bad in Europe and the Middle East. My father had done his bit and it was high time I did mine. ‘‘I had rheumatic fever when I was a baby and was always introduced as the ‘weak one’ of the family. That stuck in my mind forever and I think that’s how I got through. I was determined to prove them wrong. ‘‘I took the oath of allegiance on the 11th of the 11th [November], 1941 and just as we came out, the guns went off for the stand to.” His war began in Timor, where the reinforcements were sent to protect a beachfront and an aerodrome for Allied fighter planes and bombers going up to Java. “We weren’t told much, just that the Japs were only little fellas: they’d be easy to fight. There was no intelligence at all. ‘‘Then we got word that there were 13 enemy transports coming in to the harbour, fully protected with air and sea support. “Next morning we were ordered back to the aerodrome. The planes had gone, so we blew it up. ‘‘We had no communication and no word from Australia because they had just bombed Darwin, so we just had to do what we could do and went into the jungle.” The odds were overwhelming: 1200 Aussies against a Japanese force of 900 paratroopers and another 23,000 fully equipped troops and a hail of bombs coming up from behind. On the third day, the Australian troops came to a hill that had been taken by the Japanese. On the other side were their supplies. “It was decided that we would advance up the hill at five o’clock. The waiting was the hardest, because we knew what we were in for,” recalled Fred. “A colonel, who had been in the 1914-18 war, decided the only way to take the ridge was by bayonet charge and he sent the men up line abreast. The Japs just mowed them all down. That was when it really hit home. “We were getting fired on and our sergeant thought at first it was coming from a hut nearby. So he grabbed a Tommy gun and ran towards it. They shot him in the back. ‘‘There were six of us left and the corporal told us to follow him towards a stand of prickly pear where a Japanese machine gun had dug in. The gunner opened up and the corporal was the first to cop it.

[ 12 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

Lucky to survive: World War II soldier, Fred Smith. Picture: Daryl Gordon

‘‘Then another was killed in front of me, two more were wounded and two of us didn’t get a scratch.” It was kill or be killed. After taking the machine gun nest, there were bodies everywhere. “I felt my feet were a bit sluggish and I looked down and there were brains on my left boot. I could never get rid of the stains. You’re not in your right mind. I was standing upright in the open and I was in shock. ‘‘I heard this ‘crack, crack’, and they were bullets flying past me. I told the fella behind me to get down and just as I ducked, he dropped at my feet, dead. We knocked off about 1000 Japanese that day, and we lost about 45 men. But we took that ridge.” They’d had no food and no sleep for four days. Exhausted, the men rested overnight and in the morning, it was over. The enemy had arrived. “Being taken prisoner was terrible. I would rather have been killed going up that ridge.” Over the next two days, the 1100 prisoners were marched back to the beach, passing lines of sneering Japanese troops lauding their victory over their deflated opponents. The Australians were set to work unloading the Japanese ships, hauling 100-kilogram bags

up the sea wall to the stores. Then about 100 prisoners, including Fred, went up to Java for a while, then on to Changi prison in Singapore and, finally, to the infamous Burma railway. “The railway was like a black tunnel. So many men died. We were beaten, starving. I thought of my family, that they would want me back home. I guess I had determination. ‘‘I had malaria so many times and when I had to go out to work my head would be swimming. It was wet, muddy and miserable. ‘‘I never thought of dying. While the work was hard on the railway line, it meant I was still alive. “We weren’t very well received when we came home, just like the Vietnam chaps. We weren’t allowed to talk about it — not that we could then. It got to me for many years; I used to hate them [the Japanese]. ‘‘But then I thought, the hate is killing me. I have sort of put myself into two categories. I was a different person then. “War made a better man of me,’’ said the Tootgarook resident. “To think of others to help them where I can. I see life in a different way. Tomorrow is a different day; forget yesterday. No one ever learns from a war, the losers win. ‘‘Nearly every day is Remembrance Day for

me. I think of my mates, those that never came back. They are forgotten, the ones who died on Timor.’’

JOHN BILES

W

e could be likened to the Stolen Generation. We were taken from our jobs, from our families, and put in the army to fight an unpopular war. We were told what to do — brainwashed to a certain degree — for two years and at the end, told to piss off. Is that not a stolen generation?” For Seaford resident John Biles, his conscription into the army in July 1967 and tour of duty in South Vietnam marked the start of a long, emotional journey he would travel for the next 45 years and into the future. “I wanted to be called up and was prepared to volunteer if I wasn’t. I was engaged, and thought it was a good opportunity to get some sort of trade, but that never happened.” In an era where coming of age meant something and was marked by a gold watch, John’s 21st birthday was celebrated on a ship on its way to Vietnam. “A mate of mine got the cooks on board to

FEATURESTORY

of their country make a large cake for me and we shared it around. ‘‘We were only allowed one can of beer per day on the ship, but the ones who didn’t drink lined up for one anyway and gave them to me. But it was a sad time for me. “I knew very little about the war. I didn’t really expect anything; just went with the flow. It was a bit of a shock when we arrived. I had never been out of Victoria and had never seen anything tropical in my life. ‘‘It was very hot. We’d done some jungle warfare training in Queensland, but the tropics there were nothing like it was in Vietnam.’’ Private John Biles and his mates in the 4th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment/ NZ — which included two companies of New Zealanders — settled down to camp life, going out on patrol and making contact with the enemy during a few minor skirmishes. “I was in a couple of minor battles, but my first big one was when we went out to help Charlie Company which was under attack. ‘‘It was Friday the 13th, 1968, about the middle of the day. There are three platoons in a company and one swept through, one went around to cut them off and the other stayed behind. I have no idea how many enemy we killed that day. They had a bunker system and just disappeared. “We lost three people, and six were wounded. We carried them about a kilometre to where we had to chop out an area for the helicopters to land and extract them. The American pilots wouldn’t come in because there was enemy still in the area. But the Aussie pilots did.” Mates were very important, John says. You depended on them to watch your back and you watched theirs. When you were on patrol you always kept an eye on the fellow in front and the fellow behind and the last one in line — tail-end Charlie – made sure there was no one coming up from behind. “I came home in the May of that year because of medical reasons. I don’t know of any people at the time who were really stressed out. We had a job to do and we did it. We were running on adrenalin. ‘‘It was when you come back to normality that it hit you. At first we were in denial: there’s nothing wrong with me. When you realise what you’ve gone through, that’s when it hits you. ‘‘I turned to alcohol. I was depressed and had post-traumatic stress disorder to such a degree that I am now TPI [totally and permanently incapacitated]. “The government at the time, and Jim Cairns [treasurer in the Whitlam government] in particular, has so much to answer for. There were [antiVietnam War] moratoriums in America and Cairns encouraged people in Australia to do it too. About 100,000 people marched in Melbourne. It turned people against us. ‘‘I went to an Anzac Day march in the city and, after it was over, my mate and I walked down to Flinders Street station to get a taxi. The Australian driver asked us where we served. ‘‘My friend told him he was in the Army Reserve, and I said in Vietnam. He told me to get

out: “We don’t allow baby killers in taxis,” he said. ‘‘That happened twice. We were the forgotten people, national servicemen. ‘‘When I got my TPI someone asked me what I got it for. That’s what for. Remembrance Day means a lot to me.”

NICK SMEDLEY

I

found a notepad I had when I was in grade 2 and I’d written I wanted to be a soldier when I grew up. There was no family tradition; it was just in my make-up. ‘‘There were a lot of reasons why I wanted to join: the ever-changing environment and having the whole world as your office, wanting to do something in your life that would help and have an impact on someone’s life. Everyone wants to make a difference, an impact, a statement. I guess this was my way of doing it.” Former lance corporal Nick Smedley joined the army in 2006, and resigned four years later. He served with the 7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment (7RAR) in Iraq from March to September 2009. “I was offered a job as an officer after the entry exams, but I wanted to go in as a grunt. There is a saying I have adopted: ‘The man at the top of the hill didn’t fall there’. You have to start at the bottom to have the respect of other people. ‘‘Although you go through a lot of training at officers’ school to get to that point, I wanted to do the hard work. I wasn’t looking for an easy job.” After six months of intense training, Nick was assigned to a newly formed infantry battalion in Darwin, the 7RAR. “We were deployed to Iraq in March 2009. I was excited when we arrived in Baghdad. Training for years — for something you never know if

Still serving others: John Biles outside the Seaford RSL.

you will put into practice — is frustrating. To do it for real was a relief, something we all wanted. “There are times when I look back and feel I should have been scared. But at the time you focus on doing your job and what you are trained to do. It’s afterwards that you maybe think that was a close call. “People look on all Iraqis and Afghans as terrorists. But the majority of people are just like you and me. They just want to do their jobs and go home to their families at night and earn an honest dollar. ‘‘They were nice people. But you never let your guard down. As much as people were kind, you couldn’t ever be sure their intentions were true.” Nick’s base was shared with US and other allied troops and received a lot of indirect fire. “It was an easy target. Thousands of rockets and mortars were dropped in our area. I lost count. We had a lot of close calls, but fortunately no Australians were injured while I was there. Allied troops were killed though. “The injured and dead civilians had a greater affect on me. We could be anywhere and a dozen mortars or rockets would fall. People’s lives are destroyed, over nothing. That’s when you realised it was a war. “Do I think I made a difference? That’s a difficult question. There’s no direct act that I did that was going to make a difference to Iraq as a whole or the war in the Middle East. ‘‘But the interactions we had with the people, to show them we were there to help, I know we did. ‘‘When we got off the plane in Australia we were welcomed by a few high-ranking officers and, when we went through customs, there was just half a dozen or so people waiting for us. There was no news report, no PM to greet us. ‘‘People have no idea what these soldiers have been through — the horrors they’ve seen, the

Picture: Gary Sissons

Did his duty: Nick Smedley with his medals from deployment in Iraq. Picture: Gary Sissons hardships they’ve endured just because their country has asked them to do it. ‘‘Yes, we volunteer, but someone has to do it. Just because you volunteer doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get recognition for it. To just acknowledge that we have returned would make a difference. “We honour the dead, but we don’t recognise the survivors, or the wounded. There are hundreds of Australians getting injured in current wars, but you would never know. The ones with missing legs, or psychological issues, get no recognition because they didn’t die.” He believes there is justification in some wars. “There are people in the world who do nothing but make life harder for other people. The atrocities that go on are terrible and sometimes we just have to intervene and go in and try to make things right.’’ Nick, who lives in Skye, thought about staying on in the army, but decided to move on. “I had to make a choice about my own life and what was best for me. I served my time and did my bit and it was a very hard gig. ‘‘You can’t join the army and not be prepared to sacrifice a lot – your time, your family, and your relationships and, in some cases, your body, your health. And sometimes you just have to push through. “Like all Australians on Remembrance Day, I think of the sacrifices that men made in war. But now that I know people who have died, it means a lot more. ‘‘And you don’t only think about the Australians who died, but people from other countries and all the civilians caught up in it that die. It’s not just about our war and what we’ve achieved and sacrificed.”

Quick race back-up pays

Glorious leader: Another Prelate, ridden by Craig Robertson, wins the Peninsula Cup.

Pictures: Daryl Gordon

Prelate lines up for another salute BY BRAD McGRATH MORNINGTON trainer Quinton Scott is eyeing off a second big pay day for Another Prelate after the eight year old won the $80,000 Peninsula Cup at Mornington on Sunday. In glorious conditions, despite a short shower an hour before the feature, a crowd of over 10,000 people witnessed Another Prelate with jockey Craig Robertson aboard charge home to record an easy victory. “He’s a pretty good, honest horse as his form suggests and you know he peaked it right and he ran well the other day,” Scott said. “He had a nice run in that race and Craig seems to know how to ride him and everything fell into place.” Robertson timed his run on Another Prelate to perfection after two-time Peninsula Cup winner Jungle Ruler hit the lead at the top of the straight. But the $2.80 favourite charged home to win by 41⁄2 lengths from Colin Little’s Port Vell ($13)

and Jungle Ruler ($11). “He’s as honest as the day is long. His first-up run was enormous when he wasn’t quite ready,” Robertson said. “The other day at Seymour his run was real good — he may have just peaked on his run 100 metres out. And today you looked at him in the yard and his coat has come through and Quinton has done an enormous job to peak him today. He just beat them easily.” Scott then declared that Another Prelate would target the $80,000 Wodonga Cup on December 1. Remarkably, the horse has won at the Pakenham picnics, which Scott believed was about the level Another Prelate belonged. “To be honest, I got the horse with the understanding that I win a race with him at the Pakenham picnics – which I did,” the beaming trainer said. “He has sort of gone on a bit from the picnics.” Home and hosed: Craig Robertson returns to scale on Peninsula Cup winner Another Prelate.

PAKENHAM trainer Terence Ahern has been going to spell Yuka Joy but the seven year old just keeps getting results. At Sunday’s Peninsula Cup meeting the mare, with veteran hoop Darren Gauci on board, won the $30,000 Surdex Sheet and Coil Showcase Handicap (2400m). This preparation, the daughter of Gundane has had 11 starts with her best start coming in her length win over a strong field on Sunday. “She’s been holding her form very well — we’ve nearly been gonna spell her every run and every time it’s going to be her last run but that run today is probably her best run this prep,” Ahern said. The front-running mare was in the mix from the outset and then out-sprinted Pat Hyland’s long shot King Triton and pre-race favourite, the Stuart Webb-trained Boredom. Ahern said Yuka Joy had been luckless at Seymour the previous Tuesday when she was narrowly beaten at the finish, prompting him to run her again. “The plan with her is always to be up on the speed and she ran Tuesday at Seymour and she was terribly unlucky — she nearly fell out of the straight and she had more interference at the 800m and went down at the finish,” he said. “We thought we’d line her up again and she has just had a trot and a canter and a couple of easy days in the paddock before today.” Gauci said the race the way panned out had suited Yuka Joy with the veteran jockey able to extract the best out of his mount. “She’s been racing well and things went her way today,” he said. “She takes a bit of riding and while she’s out in front she takes a bit of a look around but she was quite happy and relaxed.“ In the feature race, Mornington trainer Quinton Scott saluted with Another Prelate taking out the the main race, $80,000 Peninsula Cup. A huge crowd of more than 10,000 people saw Another Prelate with jockey Craig Robertson on board charge home to record an easy victory. — Brad McGrath

Braves thwart Hastings attack

Mounties climb back in saddle

BY MORGAN COLE

Four runs: Flinders’ Robbie Clements guides the ball through gully in his tesam’s loss to Langwarrin on Saturday. Picture: Daryl Gordon

Baden Powell middle-order batsman Elia Carter proved to be the difference, making 69 to help guide the Braves to victory. ‘‘He is the sort of batsman that on his day he is as good as any in the league,’’ Davenport said. Davenport was pleased with his side’s resilience despite the fierce bowling from Hastings. ‘‘Hastings have one of the best attacks in the league,’’ he said. ‘‘We rate them very highly — they’re a side that has come down from Provincial so we know how good they are.’’

In other District Shield matches, Delacombe Park cruised to victory over Frankston YCW. The Pines chased superbly, overrunning Main Ridge’s 271 to win by three wickets. Captain Ricky Ramsdale had a day out with 153. Langwarrin has made it three in a row after defeating Flinders by 114 runs, Daniel Weare making 100 and Andrew Johnson a classy 70. Boneo was unable to run down the 317-run tally set by Somerville, with opener Keith Burdett making 129.

Tyabb sneaks in by six runs as Tigers collapse TYABB narrowly defeated the Seaford Tigers by six runs in its MPCA Sub-District Shield match at Tyabb Reserve on Saturday. The Yabbies got off to a rocky start in their first innings losing captain and opener Luke Rus for a duck being clean bowled by a Chris Hand delivery. Middle-order bat Jarrod White stepped up, hitting a game-high 53 to help the Yabbies to a total of 166.

Seaford Tigers also had problems with their top order and looked to be in trouble early at 3-36, but middle-order dynamo Ash Mills got the Tigers back on track with 32. Chris Hand (30), David James (23) and Gavin Gardiner-Smith (21) made up the bulk of Seafords runs but once the middle order had been removed, the Tigers collapsed. Tyabb bowler Jack Raeside led the attack, taking 4-32 off his 20 overs giving Seaford no

breathing room with 10 maidens. In other SubDistrict matches, French Island just escaped with victory after bowling out Red Hill on day one for 94, Benjamin King getting French Island over the line with 61. Rosebud remains unbeaten after defeating Skye having no trouble defending its 217 run tally. Balnarring had a comfortable win over Dromana by 62 runs. — Morgan Cole

MT Eliza put a week of turmoil behind it to overcome local rivals Peninsula Old Boys by 18 runs in their MPCA Provincial Shield match at Emil Madsen Reserve on Saturday. After a horrendous week in which Mt Eliza was stripped of its points for playing an ineligible player, the Mounties were desperate to salvage a win. Mt Eliza made a conservative first-innings total of 166 off 75 overs, while the Mounties’ top order struggled to have a major impact on the game. Old Boys bowler Zac Fillipone made his presence felt with 2-13 from 13 overs including the scalps of opener Shane Speedie and captain Lyle House. With the Mt Eliza top order crumbling, allrounder Justin Grant stepped in to steady the Mounties, making the top score of 46. Coach Jason Mathers lauded Grant’s work, saying: ‘‘He just about won us the game with his batting and bowling.’’ Peninsula went in confident of running down the Mt Eliza total despite the absence of premier batsman Eivion Bowen. Getting off to a less than ideal start, the Old Boys lost opening duo Callum Savio (10) and Dylan O’Malley (14) cheaply. Brandon Lawler, playing his first game for the season, stepped into the void to help settle the Old Boys with a timely 55. ‘‘[Lawler] batted superbly,’’ Mathers said. ‘‘When we got him out it changed the game. If we didn’t get him out they would have won.’’ The door opened for a Mt Eliza victory when House claimed the wicket of Lawler, triggering a collapse of the Old Boys’ tail. Savio and Old Boys skipper Glen Prendergast both fell to Grant, who was at his brilliant best with 5-40. In other Provincial Shield matches, Baxter defeated Crib Point with Daniel Warwick hitting 105 not out. Long Island outlasted Heatherhill with Justin Bridgeman leading the way with 102. Sorrento overran Mooroduc with Anthony Blackwell making 87 to help overcome the hefty tally of 235 made by Moorooduc on day one. Mornington got its first win for the season, upsetting Rye by 13 runs. — Morgan Cole

BADEN Powell secured its second victory of the season by chasing down Hastings’ total in its MPCA District Shield match at Overport Park on Saturday. Baden Powell’s attack was extremely efficient, cleaning out the Hastings batting line-up for 141 off 62 overs, with John Harrison (3-21) and Anjula Perera (4-31) doing the damage. The Hastings top order started strongly, Brad Watson making 23 before falling to Delacombe Park recruit Brendon Jovic. Ben Davenport was pleased with Jovic’s efforts since crossing over to Baden Powell. ‘‘He’s fitting in really well with the boys,’’ Davenport said. ‘‘He hasn’t had a bag of wickets yet, but they’ll come.’’ Hastings captain Scott Phillips made 69 and was involved in a solid partnership with Luke Hewitt, giving their side some breathing space. The Braves attack was relentless and, once Phillips was removed by a Perera delivery, the rest of the line-up quickly fell — the final four batsmen failing to make a run. Defending only a modest total, Hastings dived into the attack with impetus, Isuru Dias leading the way by taking Perera’s wicket for just 14. Despite the early wickets of Perera and top order batsman Travis Kellerman (9) the Braves remained stubborn at the crease, with captain Rhys Elmi (31) and Adam Landry (32) keeping them in touch.
