FIRST PERSON

I am David Holder … and I’m a professional Lego master I was totally into Lego as a kid, but I only got back

into it in earnest when I was 22. The renewed interest went hand in hand with a bit of disposable income, and one of those $10 vouchers that you get from Target. My voucher was expiring that day, so I went in with the intention of blowing it on a bag of lollies, but I saw a sale on Lego: three figurines for $10. It just so happened that the trio came from a set of 16, and the collector in me kicked in straight away. I had no idea it’d turn into a career. Melbourne Legoland announced the “Brickfactor” contest when they decided to hire a master builder, so I signed up. It was amazing, but intense: it was a two-day Lego-building expo and competition, with a hundred entrants. Everyone from engineers to IT professionals and teachers had a crack. I don’t have an engineering or construction background, but I am good at Lego. I’d studied music, so maybe a creative background helped, too. I also have an open mind and I’m patient, which you really need because working at Legoland as a master builder isn’t just about sitting in a room building Lego by yourself. The biggest part of the job is instructing kids on how to build, and interacting with people. I started work at Legoland two months before it opened in 2017, to help set up the site. Since then, it’s been one of the broadest roles I’ve ever had; covering everything from keeping displays up to date and in good repair, and building in the workshop with the window open so that kids and parents can see what you’re working on and have a chat, through to teaching classes. My favourite and most challenging build was when we constructed the world’s largest Lego Millennium Falcon. It was five metres’ long with more than 50,000 bricks. Builds like that are never wholly mapped out, and they don’t have step-bystep instructions. You have to be intuitive. I’m pumped to have this role, and my friends and family all think it’s cool. My nieces and nephews are definitely the most excited. At the start, everyone was like, “that’s so cool” – it’s definitely one of the most unique jobs in Melbourne – but it’s become normal now. It’s more like, “yeah, that’s Dave. A professional Lego builder. That’s his thing.” ●

This is the easiest editor’s letter I have ever had to write. Spending a portion of my work day contemplating actor Ryan Reynolds is hardly an imposition. Our journalist Simone Lee met him and, in a similar vein to our own humble Chris Hemsworth, found an honest man with foibles. He discusses his lifelong anxiety and, for someone in the spotlight, it’s a generous and important admission. Scroll through Facebook and Instagram, and count the number of #couplegoals posts about him and wife Blake Lively. But in this interview, he’s less Hollywood razzle and more relatably human. ●

R

yan Reynolds is enjoying what he describes as the “most rewarding” time in his life. Happily married to fellow actor Blake Lively, with two young daughters (Ines, one, and James, three), the Canadian heartthrob has found the kind of happiness that was frustratingly elusive in his 20s. At 41, Ryan resurrected a floundering career with his smash box-office success Deadpool, the highest grossing R-rated film of all time ((Deadpool 2 opened in Australia last month). He personally lobbied 20th Century Fox for more than a decade to make the film and when the slick, self-mocking action comedy finally saw the light of day in 2016, it went on to earn almost $800 million at the worldwide box office. The trash-talking, foulmouthed, angst-ridden comic-book outsider was a hit with audiences and far surpassed industry expectations and those of Reynolds himself.

Have you already started thinking about the kind of life education you would like to give to your daughters? I want them to grow up feeling loved and protected and without feeling like they’re part of a celebrity family. They deserve to have as normal a life as possible and I would also like them to grow up in the outdoors, the way I and my brothers grew up. Even though you’re a very outgoing type of individual, you’ve been very protective of your family’s privacy. I’m concerned with protecting my children’s privacy. Your children deserve to grow up without being made self-conscious of who their parents are and why photographers are following your family. They never get to make a choice, so I want to shield them as much as I can from the kind of public exposure that Blake and I deal with because of our work.

COMIC RELIEF LOVE AND FAMILY SET RYAN REYNOLDS ON THE RIGHT COURSE You’ve said in the past that you’re glad this kind of success has come later in your career. Can you explain? What I think is that if Green Lantern had been a massive success and earned $6 billion, maybe I would have got trapped for life playing in superhero movies. I think I’ve benefited in life from having gone through those peaks and valleys and also made a lot of other films that have been important to me. Does having children also make for a big change in your perspective on everything? Having a family means that you stop worrying about a lot of stupid things and you start focusing on the present. I remember how I used to get bored when people would show their baby pictures, and I wanted to jump out of the window after parents would show me baby photos on their phone displays. Since I’ve become a father, though, I can’t stop taking my own children’s photos and showing them to my friends. And when other people show me photos of their children, I’m very open to that and I’ll start asking questions about how they get their kids to go to sleep and different things about parenting.

You went to college but then you decided to quit and move to Los Angeles to pursue acting full time. I was getting bored in college and one day I just thought I should drive down in my Jeep to LA and see what would happen. I spent a lot of time auditioning and expecting that everyone would be ready to hire me. I found out pretty quickly that it wasn’t going to be like that and that I was competing against a lot of very talented people who had exactly the same ambitions as I had. What made you stay the course? You’ve got to be willing to tough it out but I thought acting was a lot more interesting than driving a forklift or any of the other odd jobs I had done up to that point. Now that you’ve hit your 40s, do you have any different perspective on life? You have this feeling that life is passing you by much faster, suddenly. You begin to feel your mortality. ● DEADPOOL 2 \ Showing in cinemas nationally

“Having a family means that you stop worrying about a lot of stupid things and you start focusing on the present.” Loves ESTROGEN \ I’m just fine being surrounded by estrogen. I grew up in a house full of testosterone: I’m the youngest of four boys, and my dad was a cop, and that’s intense. I love having [two] girls because I remember what it was like in my house growing up where us guys would destroy the house when our parents were out.

BLAKE LIVELY’S SENSE OF HUMOUR \ My wife is the real deal. I mean she is a mercenary. At one point in the middle of the delivery (of daughter James), the doctor’s cell phone went off and she said, ‘Oh, no. Go ahead; take a personal call. Feel free.’ She was cracking jokes in the delivery room.

Loathes ANXIETY \ I’ve dealt with anxiety for most of my

life. I have three older brothers, (and) our father was tough. I think the anxiety might have started there. By the time we were in [post-production with Deadpool], we’d been to Comic-Con and people went crazy for it. The expectations were eating me alive. I had a little bit of a nervous breakdown. I went to go see a doctor because I felt like I was suffering from a neurological problem or something. And every doctor I saw said, ‘you have anxiety.’ I’m just lucky that I had Blake to help me keep it together and keep me sane. TATTOOS \ I hate them all [Reynolds’ body is speckled with tattoos he had put on as a teenager]. It takes three hours in makeup to mask them. I’d get them all lasered off if it wasn’t hours and hours of brutal pain. But my wife says I should keep them, keep a record of the choices I’ve made.

The defining presence of chilli, pickling and fermenting in Korean cooking can present drink-matching challenges for those with a more Euro-centric palate. Beer is always a good fallback position with Korean cuisine’s robust flavour profile, but other options are equally successful and more interesting. Restaurant Shik is a new, modern-Korean restaurant in the city opened by Peter Jo, a sommelier and self-taught cook known via a series of pop-ups as Kimchi Pete. Jo is a big fan of minimal-intervention wines and just as Shik’s soundtrack is all hip-hop all the time, his wine list never veers from the natural wine path. But Shik has interesting alternatives to wine, in the form of soju, a clear distilled drink made from fermented rice and a drink called makgeolli, a cloudy white, slightly spritzy, drink, also made from rice and known in Korea as “farmers’ beer”. There are a couple of sojus at Shik, both made from unpolished rice. This gives them a more robust flavour than Japanese sake or shochu, where the rice is polished before fermenting, which gives them a cleaner, more subtle flavour profile. The Korean version of rice-based soju has a more floral bouquet, with sour, melon and pepper notes that are more than up to the job of matching with banchan and gochujang. The makgeolli is also a great food beverage. It starts with an inoculated cereal mix that’s mixed with cooked rice and produces a milky coloured, slightly bubbly drink with refreshing fermented characteristics. ●

Perfectly on song “Like static on the dial, a look comes back in style,” sings Joe Camilleri. And just like The Black Sorrows song after which it’s named, Harley & Rose makes family dining great again. Two Andrew McConnell chef alumni (Josh Murphy and Rory Cowcher) serve wood-fired pizza and table-silencing pub grub to parents, while kids eat rigatoni with their fingers. The corner site radiates laid-back warmth, with butcher’s paper-coloured canvas blinds and striped tea-towel napkins. Food is unfussy and delicious. Fluffy cod dip is a nod to the Builders Arms, but croquettes made with gorgonzola dolce and Brazilian tapioca, dipped in quince “ketchup”, are a crunchy golden original. Focaccia is replenished as we scoop stracciatella piled with baba ganoush and piquant pomegranate molasses. The pipi pizza with caramelised onion and cream is an exception to the seafood-doesn’t-belong-on-pizza rule. I do have a complaint: a juicy chicken schnitzel, wing attached with a batter that threatens addiction, remains a special. As Camilleri said, “Baby, it’s a crime.” ● ● Harley & Rose ● 527 Barkly Street, West Footscray ● 8320 0325 ● harleyandrose.net.au

Twenty-five years ago, when current Almond Board of Australia chairman Neale Bennett scrapped his dried-fruit business and planted almond trees on 17 hectares in north-west Victoria’s Sunraysia region, just 500 tonnes of Aussie almonds were produced, all for the domestic market. A decade ago, production had risen to 26,000 tonnes. Now, Australia grows more than 80,000 tonnes a year, 60 per cent of which goes overseas to 46 countries, led by India. California supplies 80 per cent of the world’s almonds, and Australia is second, with 7.7 per cent. And the harvest trajectory is predicted to get steeper, so that current orchard expansion soon will double this year’s production to hit $1 billion in export revenue. In February this year, a UK private-equity fund bought a 400-hectare almond orchard in the Sunraysia district for an undisclosed sum, and Australian investment bank Macquarie Group has sold more than 1000 hectares of Sunraysia’s almond orchards on behalf of investors; among the buyers,

who paid $115 million for the deal was a Canadian teachers’ pension fund. “It’s really taken us from a cottage industry,” Bennett says. “The health benefits have pushed a lot of the growth, as people have become more conscious of what we put in our bodies, looking for a more natural product, less processing and an alternative source of protein.” Almonds are still available in the supermarket and bulk store, flaked, slivered and whole, but now they’re also the ingredient in hundreds of everyday foods and product lines: breakfast granolas and lactose-free coffee; gluten-free almond-meal cakes and treats; protein-rich snacks at the gym and school canteen; in savoury recipes for pastas, salads and Asian and Middle Eastern foods; as a coating for fried foods; and adding nuttiness to desserts from the bottom crust to the decoration. consumption. Almond-orchard areas continue to expand — in 2016 by 16 per cent to 10 million trees over 36,000 hectares, mostly in the Murray River’s Sunraysia and Riverland regions. Most are boutique but, increasingly, multinational companies are investing in vast new agribusinesses. At the same time, new areas of demand open up, such as in aromatherapy and the cosmetics industry. Researchers are developing uses for the byproducts as a stock-food supplement, in rubber production, as a fertiliser and after torrefaction (super heating) as a stiffening agent in the manufacture of plastics for disposable cutlery, plant pots and wood-polymer material in decks and fencing. Adding to its planet-friendly reputation, most Australian orchards are irrigated with drip systems managed by soil-moisture-monitoring technology. “Farming has become a science and this is an efficient industry,” Bennett says. “We’re now seeing that people are interested in everything about the product. They’re reading packaging before they buy; where a product comes from, even its carbon footprint.”

Multinational companies see nuttin’ but opportunity in the Australian almond industry. ISTOCK

hese days it seems like everyone’s got a side hustle they’re working on, be it a podcast, blog, start-up or app. They are generally the first step towards ditching a traditional nine-to-five job and becoming your own boss. But many are generating little or no income – some with scant intention of doing so. Freelance writer Madeleine Dore is an example of the movement, as the creator of popular website Extraordinary Routines. “I was unemployed and felt pretty dismal having just come back from an exciting year studying abroad in Denmark,” Dore says about starting the website as a university graduate in 2014. “Back in Australia, I was unable to find work as a journalist, while friends around me were making leaps and bounds in their newly forged careers.” Dore created Extraordinary Routines as a platform to help document high-profile people’s

daily lives (academic Susan Carland, artist Bill Henson and businesswoman Zoe Foster Blake among them), often revealing insightful musings – on career, health, friendship, spirituality and family, for example. Within a few months of launching the site, Dore went on to land a job as the deputy editor of industry website ArtsHub. Recently, Dore started another venture – Side Project Sessions, which hosts free events designed for other creative types and entrepreneurs to work on their ideas. While generating only modest income, Dore says her side projects are providing numerous other opportunities. Wilhelmina Ford is another side project devotee and founder of website Share Abode, which connects Australian single parents looking to “share the load” financially and emotionally. “They share the load by sharing a home which

The write stuff

W

hen I was convinced to trade in my blotchy biro for a Lamy 2000 ballpoint pen, I was unprepared for how dramatically the new pen would change my life. First going on sale in 1966, the exact same model is in production today. With its beguiling, slightly curved design and grey-and-black colour scheme, the first time I used it I felt like I was holding 1966’s vision of the 21st century in my hand. If that sounds over the top, well, stationery seems to bring this out in some people. Four years, countless notebooks, two fountain pens and one “analogue-productivity system” later, I’ve bought into the tantalising fantasy of upmarket stationery: that it offers not just technological disconnection, but a more organised and creative life.

Scott Druce, co-founder of stationery store Milligram, says that I’m far from alone in my obsession. Counter-intuitively, he thinks that highend stationery is becoming more popular because we’re using less of it. “People don’t need to write as much,” he says. “It’s not a chore any more, it’s a choice. That changes your mindset, and you’re actually more interested in

WO R D S ● A N D E RS F U R Z E

the quality of the product, the colour of the ink, what sort of paper you write on, that sort of thing.” Two things excite Druce the most about this analogue world: the finely tuned process that goes into creating stationery and what it’s used for. “To create a really beautiful fountain pen you need to refine a very technical manufacturing process. And it’s something that, once it’s been created, you then use to be creative.” As quality stationery becomes increasingly popular, thousands of Instagram accounts and blogs have popped up, reviewing products and slavishly detailing the thousands of ways popular notebooks from brands like Moleskine or Midori can be “hacked” – customised by users – to create evermore-elaborate journal systems. And while some pens retail for thousands of dollars, Druce points out that upping your stationery game is not just for the wealthy. “Our cheapest fountain pen sells for $24.95. And that’s a pen you’ll have for life. It’s refillable; you’re not going to toss it away. It’s something that you can love and cherish.” ●

MONEY

Financial-reform school ARE YOU A DOLLARS DUNCE? GET FISCAL WITH THESE BASICS

N

o one wants to feel like they don’t have a clue, especially when it comes to money. But, with all the complexity (and sometimes downright sneakiness) of the finance industry, it’s pretty easy to get yourself in a right old muddle. So we asked two experts how to avoid some major mistakes and rise from financial dunce to demigod.

JUST POP THAT ON CREDIT, THANKS \ What’s the worst mistake when it comes to the old plastic fantastic? “First of all, having a credit card. Credit cards are the absolute devil,” says Dr Adrian Raftery,

associate professor at Deakin Business School. “I guess the reason why they’re the devil is it’s access to money you don’t have and so you’re always chasing your tail.” Dr Raftery, who doesn’t have a credit card, says using debit cards creates more discipline. However, if you really must have a credit card, he recommends attaching a Post-It Note to it, asking yourself if you really need whatever you’re buying. “It’s just a prompt to make you stop and think, rather than face up to the pain a month later.” Other things to be wary of? The bank slowly increasing your credit limit, and automatic cash

advances, where high interest kicks in straight away. Finally, if you need to show a solid credit history – say to get a mortgage – a credit card is the worst thing you can have, says Dr Raftery. It simply increases your liability risk, lowering the amount a bank will lend you.

Dr Raftery recommends only borrowing for an asset, rather than an expense such as a holiday. “If you want to go on a holiday, save up for it.” Whatever the loan, the major consideration is the interest rate, he says. So shop around. NO MONTHLY FEES, PLEASE \ Opening a stock-

GETTY IMAGES

HIGH-INTEREST PERSONAL LOAN, ANYONE?

Dr Raftery is not dead against personal loans – in fact he took a $10,000 loan out himself 20 years ago to start a business, but paid it off quickly. Personal loans are unsecured, with a higher interest rate. “If you are a homeowner, my preference is that you do a redraw on your mortgage or incorporate any borrowings within your mortgage, because generally it’ll be around the four per cent mark, versus a personal loan that’s probably eight, nine, 10 per cent,” he says. In some cases, interest rates can be far higher.

standard transactional account? There’s good news. “It’s harder to make a really terrible mistake than it is in a lot of other areas,” says Steve Mickenbecker from comparison site Canstar. “They’ve become a much better deal over the years. In the past you could really string up huge monthly account fees.” Saying that, even a $10 monthly fee can add up over time, so aim for a fee-free account that still has the features you need, such as plenty of transactions, eftpos, direct debit, BPay, branch transactions and cheques – that’s if you still need them. ●

ccording to the recent Sensis Social Media Report, more than half of Australians access the internet more than five times a day and a whopping 81 per cent rely on a smartphone. With statistics like that, it’s no wonder that we feel so attached to our pocket lifelines. There are thousands of apps developed for the sole purpose of encouraging us to be healthier, so why not download a few and turn your phone into your own personal health coach? We’ve rounded up our five favourite apps that are easy to use, affordable and designed to help you get healthier. From recipes to expand your repertoire, to organising your life and remembering to be grateful, it’s all covered.

My Gratitude Journal $2.99, iTunes

If you don’t have time for a one-hour gym session, this handy little app has you covered. Zova offers hundreds of effective workouts that take less than 10 minutes and can be done anywhere. Each workout comes with videos of how each move is done, so you know the correct alignment, as well as specially designed sets for toning, weight loss and strength. All you need is a small space, some comfortable gear and your phone.

Being healthy isn’t just limited to our bodies, so it makes sense that we also include an app for our mental wellbeing on this list. Developed by psychologists and other health experts, Smiling Mind aims to help introduce mindfulness and meditation into the lives of busy people. There are 10 modules, with 42 guided sessions that focus on breathing, bringing calm to your mind and combating anxiety.

Loved by Oprah, this app is a simple and effective way to note down what you’re thankful for. Why is that important? Well, keeping a gratitude journal has been proven to lower anxiety, reduce stress and encourage better sleeping habits, as well as improve heart health and boost immunity. And those are all very good reasons to take a moment out of your day to be grateful for what you have. ●

Under the microscope STARTING SMALL AND SIMPLE CAN LEAD TO BIG CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE

W

e all know what habits are, especially if we have bad ones. While we’re often quite aware of our bad habits, we probably don’t pay much attention to our good habits. Brushing your teeth every morning and night is a good habit. Checking that the doors are locked when you leave the house is a good habit. Getting up without fail every morning to do your 6am workout is a good habit. When it comes to reaching your goals and keeping that positive momentum going, good habits are key and good habits work. When it comes to reaching your goals, it’s the

micro-habits that count and lead to big results. Micro-habits are small actions that don’t require much motivation or even much effort to complete. The trick here is that over time, constant repetition of these micro-habits will result in something bigger. The real beauty of micro-habits is that they’re simple. You won’t need to make an excuse to not do them or decide they’re too hard. Just like brushing your teeth or making a cup of tea. So, you’re probably wondering how you can add some micro-habits into your day-to-day life. Here are some simple suggestions for how to make micro-habits part of your daily routine:

For example: if you have sugar in your coffee, reduce this from one teaspoon of sugar to half a teaspoon, then only have it half the time until you don’t need to have sugar at all. 4 Have a big glass of water before every meal. 5 Take the car park the furthest away from your destination. 6 Walk or cycle to work one day a week. 7 Stand up and stretch every hour on the hour. 8 Go phone free for 30 minutes before bed. 9 Get your workout clothes out the night before. 10 Take a daily walk at work, even if it’s just a lap of the block.

JULIA KULESHOVA

A relaxing weekend by the ocean: it may not seem like the ideal minibreak when the weather is colder, but oceanside destinations, such as Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula, are popular shoulderseason holiday spots. And there are quite a few reasons why Sorrento has become Melbourne’s winter getaway of choice. The Peninsula Hot Springs are a mere 15 minutes from Sorrento, offering visitors massages, spa treatments and a soak in the natural springs that will warm even the coldest of bodies on a winter’s day.

Likewise, some of Victoria’s best wineries with gourmet restaurants are just off the beaten track (or freeway) from Sorrento. The township offers gorgeous views, including those from the Sorrento back beach, which are as beautiful in winter as they are in summer. Adding to the appeal, Sorrento has several winter activities for visitors who make the trip on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway. With day spas, historic walks and luxe shopping, Sorrento has something for friends on a fun trip, couples looking for a romantic break or families during school holidays.

iss Campbell’s career has been a caring and creative one, leading her from working with World Vision Australia to Head of Service Learning at Camberwell Girls Grammar. Through her work, she has taught many about the disadvantages people face in local, national and global settings.

WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL?

I’m a country girl. I grew up on a farm in central Victoria attending a very small Devenish Primary School (40 students) and then Benalla High School. I studied a Bachelor of Arts at Ballarat University followed by a graduate diploma in education at Monash University.

I was good at art and design as it required me to use my imagination and create. I have a hearing problem and missed a lot in other classes but did well in the art room. HOW DID YOUR WORK AT WORLD VISION INFLUENCE YOUR TEACHING CAREER?

I was a graphic designer and illustrator for World Vision Australia (WVA) for many years. Although I started at CGGS as an art teacher, my passion for equality and global issues didn’t take long to come out. Working at WVA was eye-opening – the scale of poverty, the ugliness of it, the repeated disasters that usually affected those less fortunate and the contrast with the society I was living with was stark. You can’t see photos and hear stories of those who suffer needlessly and not be changed by it.

lead, so being the Head of Service Learning wasn’t something that I aspired to, it just happened. I currently lead service and justice activities in the school, teach visual communication design, and run classes for service learning. I have developed a framework for service across the school. I have also developed curriculum for years 8 to 10, learning about at issues that affect indigenous Australians, those experiencing homelessness, local disadvantage and global issues for women. YOU TRAVEL TO CAMBODIA EACH YEAR WITH STUDENTS – WHAT DO THEY LEARN?

WHO INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A TEACHER?

My husband Matt (he is Trinity Grammar School’s senior chaplain). I’d had enough of freelancing as a graphic designer and was ready to get back into a team environment. It became clear that working in schools was a chance to use my professional background and voluntary experience mentoring young people. As a Christian I have always wanted to do good things in the world and make a difference. Being a teacher allows me to do this.

We spend most of our time in Cambodia with the Green Gecko Project. The project supports more than 70 children who previously lived and begged on the streets of Siem Reap. It also supports the children’s families and the broader community through longterm health, education and training initiatives. Spending time [there] is an awesome education for us all. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WORKING IN AN ALL-GIRLS SCHOOL?

WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE?

I like being behind the scenes, inspiring others to

GREG BRIGGS

WHAT SORT OF STUDENT WERE YOU?

I love the freedom to speak openly about difficult issues that affect women. I believe the discussion

with them can happen more easily when we talk about the complexity of things like homelessness, menstruation for girls in the developing world, gender inequality, domestic violence and stereotypes in culture. I live in a household of boys, which I love, and working with girls is a great balance. I honestly love the girls at CGGS. TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR FAMILY

I live with three of the most amazing and inspiring people. As a chaplain, my husband Matt serves with his whole heart including helping people through tough times. Our eldest son Will is 16. Having the parents that he does, I think the passion for social justice has rubbed off. He currently wants to make a difference in the world through being a barrister or in politics. Our youngest son JM (John Michael) is 11. We adopted him from the Philippines when he was almost three. Will was seven at the time and we brought him along during the long process. On the day we met JM, Will wanted to sign the adoption papers, so we quickly made a space for him to sign along with his parents. They honestly have been best friends ever since, they adore each other. ● MELISSA HEAGNEY

xercise is the best medicine,’ as the saying goes. And at Epworth Richmond, one of Victoria’s preeminent cardiac hospitals, exercise is an important part of recovery – especially for patients who have a heart attack, heart surgery or other intervention. Associate Professor Ron Dick, a cardiologist with Epworth Richmond, says being active is one of the best ways for people to regain their health and confidence after a cardiac incident. It’s also one of the best ways for avoiding a hospital visit altogether. “The most important thing you can do for your health is walk a minimum of 40 minutes a day, three days a week,” Dick says. “If you do a minimum 40 minutes a day, within 12 months you’ll be five to nine kilos lighter and your blood pressure will be better, your cholesterol will be lower and you’ll feel very much better in yourself.” Dick, and other specialists at Epworth Richmond

are so passionate about getting people moving, they have taken part in a ride with former cardiac patients and other volunteers. The ride helps patients gain fitness and also helps to raise money for services and equipment offered through Epworth Richmond’s cardiac services. The annual ride, the brainchild of a former Epworth cardiac patient, was held in Thailand earlier this year. “We’ve been doing them since 2010,” Dick explains. “The first one we did was in Cambodia. We cycled out to the temples and back down to Phnom Penh and basically we’ve done it every year since then.” Dick says a group of between 18-25 people go each year with six to seven of them being former patients. The ride has managed to raise more than $700,000 over the past eight years – the money being used to fund “cardiac rehabilitation”, including information and support for changes to

It has also funded equipment for the cath lab at the hospital in Richmond, with a Bluetooth ultrasound machine to allow cardiac specialists to scan leg arteries being purchased this year. short stroll from its 5.6-hectare namesake, newly-launched Anderson Park is attracting strong interest from professional couples and downsizing baby boomers seeking contemporary residences in a prized location. The appeal of the low-rise boutique development’s distinctive curves, high quality fitout, city views and on-ground car parking drew several hundred registrations prior to its launch last weekend. Marshall White Projects director Mark Dayman says he expects 60 per cent of residences to sell to professional couples who are keen to get a foothold in Hawthorn East or Camberwell. “The median house prices in this area can be prohibitive, so these couples are focusing on high quality apartments close to aspirational amenities.” He expects buyers consolidating layouts to reduce the total residence numbers to the low-30s. Dayman says the local park is a strong drawcard. “It’s the epicentre of this Hawthorn East/ Camberwell neighbourhood. rospective buyers helped shape the size, mix and pricing of apartments just released in the second tower of luxury Southbank project The Evermore, located on the edge of South Melbourne and near the Royal Botanic Gardens. While delighted with the first tower’s success, developer Landence Group worked with project architects Hayball to completely redesign the East Tower, released last weekend. Landence Group sales and marketing director Steve Fairbairn says buyers wanted larger two- and three-bedroom homes, and affordable three-bedroom plans. “We created twobedroom apartments with a total of 70 to 100 square metres and three-bedroom apartments with a total of 100 to 130 square metres.” Fairbairn says The Evermore is attracting apartment upgraders, city workers, downsizers and first-home buyers. “There’s growing interest from young families who don’t want to battle traffic from suburban houses. They want great apartments with excellent amenities – it’s a real shift in the market.” Construction has begun with completion due in early 2020. ● LIZ MCLACHLAN

rivate, elegant and magical are the best words to describe this Kew house located on a block of approximately 743 square metres overlooking the Yarra River. Extensive renovations have transformed the home into a modern haven of exclusive features, from custom-made brass flyscreens to hand-blown glass light fittings and concrete benchtops, hand poured on site. From the ground floor entry, residents are welcomed into the living and dining area featuring an open fireplace and north-facing windows. An opening to the right of the dining area leads to the modernised kitchen, inclusive of a glass splashback for natural light and garden views, Aga cooker, integrated refrigerator, Italian porcelain sink and handmade Italian tiles. A separate family room with polished concrete floors is designed for more casual use. The walls of this room are covered with dozens of plantation shutters, creating an innovative way to invite light into the space as required. A door opens directly to a stone-walled garden room. Timber floors flow throughout the majority of the ground floor, which also includes the property’s laundry, fourth bedroom (which is sizeable but without wardrobes, so it’s currently used as a study with a fireplace) and powder room. The staircase in the foyer leads upstairs past the void with original ceiling rose to the upper floor. The main bedroom suite – inclusive of expansive built-in wardrobes, built-in seating, cinema wall and en suite – occupies almost half of the floor. The other two bedrooms share a beautifully renovated bathroom with bath and shower, featuring white Japanese ceramic tiles, underfloor heating and double vanity. Residents are invited into the home’s main garden shrouded in seasonal mature trees via stairs on either side of the house. Included is an outdoor dining area, heated saltwater swimming pool and spa. The dining area sits beneath a pergola made from single reclaimed timber beams for vines to grow across. Other property features include a triple-filtered water system, triple remote garage, pure alpaca fleece carpets, integrated sound system, zoned reverse-cycle heating and airconditioning and video intercom. ● AMELIA BARNES property@domain.com.au

rantham is a circa 1910 property in a coveted pocket dotted with period homes. Its well-maintained facade is the very definition of street appeal, featuring coloured glass windows, a wraparound porch and decorative roof gable. An extension has been added to the home but in a cohesive style sympathetic to the original facade. Inside, the house has been renovated to adopt a modern, monochrome interior scheme. Black Japanese timber floors highlighting the home’s original period features and new amenities have been installed throughout the living areas. A central hallway extends through the original portion of the home, off which runs the formal living room with period open fireplace and natural light streaming in from north-facing windows. The main bedroom, also with an original fireplace, is located opposite. This room has been reconfigured during renovations to allow for an adjoining walk-in wardrobe and an updated en suite with contemporary freestanding bath overlooking the property’s side. Another bedroom, again with an open fireplace, and a small study with built-in desk complete this section of the home. The entrance hallway opens out to the open-plan extension surrounded by a verandah. The spacious lounge in this area includes a more modern fireplace and three double doors leading to the salt-chlorinated and heated pool. The adjoining meals and kitchen area is kept minimal in style, containing a Caesarstone island bench and Ilve 900-millimetre dual-fuel stove. Tucked away off this room is the home’s laundry and powder room. On the second storey is a retreat area, two more bedrooms and bathroom. On the opposite side of the pool to the main house ground floor is a pool house (built to look the same as the main house) containing a third living space with wooden floors, kitchenette and powder room. The three-car automatic garage with rear ROW is also part of the pool house. Bifold glass doors enable the pool-house living area to seamlessly open to the outdoor pool area, complete with a water feature, spa, paved area for dining and an outdoor shower.● AMELIA BARNES property@domain.com.au

Hop off at Armadale station or a High Street tram and you’re only a short walk to Auburn, an attractive double-fronted home in one of Melbourne’s toniest suburbs. A red-brick path cuts through the grassy front yard to a classic Victorian facade, which has iron lacework, columns and a tiled verandah. The original period rooms at the front of the house, including a carpeted lounge, have high ceilings and large marble fireplaces. There’s also a marble-lined family bathroom with a shower and spa. Exposed brick walls and timber ceilings add distinctive flair to the open-plan living and dining area. The adjoining kitchen has European appliances and an island bench with breakfast bar. If you’re ever keen to make changes, the west-facing backyard is large enough for an extension. There’s a cute little timber-clad shed that can be used as extra storage or even a studio. A laundry, powder room and covered carport complete this family home. ● KATE STANTON

Now that Paul Bangay’s garden design is all grown up, the Corbu building looks even more alluring now than when new in 2012. This ground-floor apartment has colourful specimen trees all around. A curved wall of full-length windows sweeps the north-east corner, linking the family, meals and living areas to the covered deck and its gas barbecue kitchen and bench seating. Indoors is gorgeous, with Calacatta marble finishes, timber flooring and a Miele-equipped kitchen. Both bedrooms have en suites with slab heating. The living room (or huge third bedroom) and study open to the larger deck. Park with confidence in the super-secure basement. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Arched windows and a grand bay wing give this two-storey house a graceful Edwardian air that belies its modern soul. Built in the early 2000s, it’s spacious, sunny and has zoned living areas and bedrooms that sociable families will appreciate. Adjoining living and dining areas have a gas fireplace and french doors to the garden. The parquet family and meals room commands that magnificent bay, which opens on its north side to the covered patio and fountain. The white kitchen has Bosch appliances. Two ground-floor bedrooms include the main suite. Upstairs, two further bedrooms share a study, bathroom and two balconies. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Ensconced in a pretty street near Kew Junction, this contemporary house deserves to be a free-ranging family’s paradise found. Everything about it is impressive: The floorplan is zoned, the north-facing garden has a pool, spa and half-basketball court, and the address gets full marks for walkability. The timber-floored living and family/dining rooms can connect as one huge space for entertaining, and each opens to an outdoor dining area with a mains-gas barbecue. Note the beautiful art deco leadlight doors in the living room. There’s also a TV lounge and a study. The granite kitchen has a walk-in pantry; access to the wine cellar is through the living room. The ground-floor main bedroom has a dressing room and a spa en suite. On the first floor, three double bedrooms share a bathroom with tub and shower. A bevy of discreet comforts include hydronic heating, irrigation and security. The front double garage has internal entry, and the rear garage has laneway access. ● ALISON BARCLAY AGENT \ Marshall White 9822 9999 PRICE \ $3.1 million – $3.4 million AUCTION \ June 16 at 10.30am Scan the code with the Domain app to view listing

With three living and two dining areas plus a covered terrace, this palatial property will surely inspire desire in families who like the indoor-outdoor life. However, the delight is in the detail of this 2014 design by Christopher Doyle. Oak parquetry and Volakas marble flooring, wallpaper by artist Camilla d’Errico and door handles like green absinthe crystals take the three-level house from chic to extraordinary. Formal living and dining rooms are complemented by meals, family and rumpus rooms that open to the garden and pool. Four first-floor bedrooms include the capacious main suite. A lift links both levels to the basement garage. ● ALISON BARCLAY

Renovators will be delighted with the potential of this comfortable Californian bungalow, which sits on a 796-square-metre block in a coveted pocket of Hawthorn East near Anderson Park and Burke Road trams. The house has formal areas, including a dining room and sitting room with an open brick fireplace, and casual living areas, including a central European kitchen and north-facing family room. There’s a laundry, study, video intercom, security gates and ducted heating. The main bedroom has a spa en suite and built-in wardrobe. A grassy yard wraps around three sides of the property and a long driveway leads to a two-car garage. ● KATE STANTON
