Held in Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens, The Royal Botanic Runway offers a premium setting for some of Australia’s best fashion designers to showcase their creations. Collections from Aurelio Costarella, Collette Dinnigan, Martin Grant and Akira Isogawa will be on show in the open air with Guilfoyle’s Volcano and Melbourne’s city skyline providing a picture-perfect backdrop. As well as the fashion, the event will have a strong emphasis on conservation, water management and climate. Proceeds from the event will go towards raising $3.5 million to drought-proof the Royal Botanic Gardens and eliminate the need to irrigate with increasingly valuable drinking water.

How to retune

As the final step in the move to digital-only TV, some of your channels will soon change frequencies. On or after 7 February 2014 most TV viewers in Melbourne and surrounds will need to retune their digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to keep watching their favourite shows. Some parts of the Melbourne region will be retuning later in 2014.

1

For most systems press the MENU/SETUP button on your remote, or refer to your manufacturer’s handbook.

2

Follow the prompts to retune and your TV should automatically find all channels.

To find out if this is your retune date and to sign up for an SMS or email alert, visit the website.

3

You can now keep watching your favourite shows.

MICHAEL & LINDY KLIM

The dress code said summer casual, and for most at the 14th Annual Jeep Portsea Polo it was just that. Solid blocks of bright yellow, blue, red and pink stood out – and that was just the men. They shone in rolled up chinos, slimline red pants, bright gingham shirts with contrasting bow ties and tailored jackets with shorts. Shane Warne was an exception, dressed head to toe in black. Among the women, white was a winner – from long, flowing maxi dresses to hip-hugging outfits and off-the-shoulder numbers. Fluoro orange also made an appearance, as did colourful playsuits. Footwear ranged from boat shoes to wedges, thongs and sensible leopard-skin-print flats. The Portsea Polo has sealed its spot in the summer social calendar as the place to be and to be seen. areas and plenty of lounges to relax and sip Pimm’s or a glass of champagne. MasterChef’s Matt Preston designed a lunch menu that was perfect for the warm day. The food included chicken sandwiches, rice paper rolls, hearty meat and salad rolls, and prawn cocktails with lettuce served in jars. Preston started the day in vivid green before popping up in a gingham shirt and rolling up his sleeves to help serve the hungry masses. Among the guests in the Jeep Grille were Shane Warne, Harry Kewell and Sheree Murphy, Peter Siddle and Anna Weatherlake, Lindy and Michael Klim, Pia Miller, The Real Housewives of Melbourne’s Gina Liano and Janet Roach, Nick Bracks, Jarryd Roughead, Brynne Edelsten, Georgia Sinclair and Gary Sweet. Even without a place in a marquee, onlookers got close to the action by setting up tables and chairs under the tea trees to watch the spectacle as the hooves flew past. \ Maria Harris

brand new, just-finished house that has been built with an owner-occupier in mind bats above its average in terms of quality fittings. The owner subdivided his original block of land to build a townhouse that was finished four months ago. The end result is a house with no body corporate, its own street frontage and a six-star energy rating courtesy of double-glazed windows, reduced water consumption (a water tank services the toilet) and top-quality insulation. The owner admits to going “above and beyond” in terms of the fit out: timber floors, for example, are Tasmanian oak. The result is a sheen of luxury not always experienced in smaller, townhouse builds. A functional layout keeps the quieter living spaces of the bedrooms largely segregated from a second level open-plan living space that places an emphasis on ease of entertaining. Enter to two downstairs bedrooms, each serving as a mirror for the other with a bank of built-in-wardrobes and access to a small, timber-decked balcony that services both rooms. The bathroom houses not only the bath, shower and toilet, but also a door leading to a European laundry replete with a domestic storage space ideal for stashing vacuums and cleaning products. The single-lock-up, remote-controlled garage also has an internal entry door. This space, too, allows room for extra storage of bikes or outdoor paraphernalia. Upstairs is entirely open save for a single room at the top of the staircase that has been established as a flexible space. Designed as a third bedroom, it could also be utilised as a study space or a sectioned-off retreat. The rest is easy and open: the living, kitchen and dining areas are serviced by a split-system air conditioner. Kitchen appliances are stainless steel, while a window between the kitchen and the outdoor courtyard has been designed to allow easy flow between the spaces: it’s a boon for those who love entertaining. A sense of vibrancy contained within the townhouse reflects the area in which it sits, Brunswick East having undergone a makeover since this vendor first moved in 13 years ago. Gone are the factories and warehouses, now converted into apartments, while new cafés and restaurants pop up with increasing frequency. The area is serviced by a few parks, the largest being CERES Environment Park just a few minutes away. The house is also handy to Brunswick East Primary School and the public transport services running along Lygon Street. \ SARINA LEWIS property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Auction \ February 15 at 3.30pm

This single-fronted, red-brick Edwardian is yet to receive the modern makeover that most of its counterparts have received in this extremely sought-after location. With a pretty façade, a north-facing rear and a long, deep block that adjoins a corner park, this is a great opportunity for updating or extending. A bathroom and kitchen were added after the house was originally built. Freshly painted white interiors work well with the high period ceilings. Two bedrooms and the bathroom run off the hall. The front bedroom is the pick with a fireplace with decorative tile surrounds and a bay window with stained-glass details overlooking the front porch. An open kitchen and living space has a tiled floor, a gas heater and a Chef gas cooker. A small third bedroom and a laundry with a second toilet adjoin an undercover rear porch. The expansive garden is ripe for redevelopment with either an extension to the house or as your own personal park. With trams, Sydney Road and Merri Creek nearby, this may find wide appeal. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

This single-fronted Edwardian weatherboard also has the benefit of a stylish renovation, a rear right-of-way and three bedrooms. The cream-carpeted bedrooms with high ceilings and contemporary neutral tones run off the entry hall. The front main bedroom has an open fireplace and floor-to-ceiling built-in wardrobes. East-facing windows along the hall allow light to penetrate the front of the house, showcasing the polished floorboards and fretwork in the hall. The bathroom has a discreet European laundry, a shower-over-bath and a timber vanity. The rear open-plan kitchen, meals and living area has a curved wall of windows to an elevated pergola-covered deck. This is a great entertainment space that extends out to a lawn and a rear right-of-way.
