The pain of Aspergers BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS A HEARTBROKEN Endeavour Hills mother said there were no suitable schools for her son who has Aspergers and has been routinely bullied at two schools. ‘Leanne’, who doesn’t wish her, her son or the school to be identified, said a similar plight was endured by hundreds of other parents and their children with Aspergers. She said her nine-year-old son, ‘Sean’, once so happy at kindergarten, had become depressed through school. His self-esteem had plummeted to “nothing’’, to the point that he lists himself in a loser’s column and writes in his diary that he’s sad, lonely, miserable and humiliated. ‘‘I’m stuped [stupid],’’ he writes. Sean is at his second primary school, having endured unbearable social isolation and repeated taunts about his sports skills, his writing, his drawing, even his colouring-in. “Many times he has come home in

tears. No one wants to play with him. He has sat at a table at lunchtime and no one sits with him,’’ Leanne said. “It’s heartbreaking. It gets to the stage I’m nearly too afraid to ask what happened at school that day because it’s so cringing. “The current school [staff] is supportive and do implement strategies to help, but there’s only so much they can do. There’s a lot of teasing. Kids say to him: ‘You suck! You make our team lose’.’’ Leanne fears the bullying will get worse when Sean reaches high school. Like many children with Aspergers, he becomes a target for schoolground abuse because of his social naivete and points of difference. He can’t enrol in a specialist school because his below-average IQ of 76 is still too high for the 70 IQ threshold. Nor does he qualify for a funded teaching aide to help him at a mainstream school. Under the state education department’s disabilities funding criteria, his verbal skills are considered

too high. “I would hire a full-time aide if I could afford it,’’ his mother said. “They need to remove that criteria to help kids with Aspergers. Maybe even build a specific Aspergers section at a school — just provide the mainstream schools with the resources. “Give these kids somewhere to go.’’ Murray Dawson-Smith, chief executive of ASD advocacy and support group Amaze, said children with Aspergers were commonly bullied. “They behave differently but look the same as other children’’ he says. ‘‘So they are thought of as ‘fair game’.’’ He said the criteria were excluding many children who needed help. ‘‘They may be able to express themselves verbally but they may have no idea what they are saying.’’ Schools were ‘‘making an effort’’ but teachers needed training to identify and support children with ASD. Education Minister Martin Dixon told the Journal there were no plans to loosen the criteria.

Crushed hope: Leanne holds a journal entry revealing her son’s depressed state. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

"We work with parents to come up with a program with the resources we’ve got and for what’s best for the child — that’s the main thing in the end.’’

He said funding had increased for students with a disability, plus $40 million was invested in training mainstream teachers to ‘‘deal with and recognise students with autism’’.

Commuter stands up for woman ‘racially abused’ by trio Two teenage boys then joined her in support. ‘‘Three people was all it took for the men to realise she was not alone. They soon backed off,’’ Ms O’Callahan wrote in a statement to the Journal. ‘‘As a white New Zealander, I didn’t think the sting of racism was something I’d ever feel. ‘‘But there I was, watching a countrywoman being bullied by complete strangers because of where she was born. Even though I was not their direct target, I felt their insults too.’’ She urges other commuters to adopt a similar stance in the face of racial slurs. ‘‘Simply by letting the victim know you are on their side, we can help others to feel less alone

and make Australia a better place. By supporting each other, by speaking up or merely standing close, we can make bullies feel smaller.’’ Despite a recent string of high-profile racial abuse incidents on public transport, neither Metro Trains nor Public Transport Victoria are planning any public education campaigns on the issue. Inspector Ron Gardner, who is Dandenong police’s community engagement manager, advises commuters to be assertive against such bullies. ‘‘The general advice is if your safety is not at risk, the community can make it known that [the abuse] is not acceptable.

‘‘You can tell them to ‘cut it out’. There’s nothing wrong with yelling out: ‘If you don’t stop, I’ll call the police’. ‘‘If you’re in a position to offer support, do so. But be mindful of your safety.’’ Racial vilification, which incites hatred, serious contempt, revulsion or severe ridicule against a person because of their race or religion, is illegal in Victoria. — Cameron Lucadou-Wells Anyone who suffers racial abuse should report the incident to their local police station. A REGULAR commuter took a stand against three men allegedly racially abusing a woman at Dandenong railway station last week. Kait O’Callahan said that while she was waiting for a train home said she was shocked to witness a Maori woman in her 20s told to ‘‘go back to your country’’ by the men about 4.30pm on May 29. They also hurled abuse ‘‘in slurred voices’’ involving sheep, taxes and Kiwis. She said the woman retaliated with insults while bystanders stared in silence. Ms O’Callahan, not wanting to be ‘‘someone who didn’t do anything’’, decided to console the upset woman rather than go ‘‘blindly into a confrontation’’ with the men.

Why should asylum seekers be given flat-screen monitors when a lot of Aussies can’t afford them? I do not like the way our country is being taken over. They are illegal asylum seekers. Re: Community groups ‘miss out’ Of course, the infrastructure of Dandenong is not enough nor is it keeping up with progress. It is old and outdated. Look around Dandenong. There are now tall new buildings constructed and, not too far out, more and more new housing is being built and Dandenong is already on the way to being a regional centre. Unless community centres are remodelled and updated, the community will suffer. Jerry Lee (via web)

Council’s backflip on shopping jeeps BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS A PENSIONER deliberately abandoned during a community bus shopping trip may have earned ultimate victory against Greater Dandenong Council. Tomorrow night, councillors will vote on a report recommending to overturn a ban on shopping jeeps for the pensioner trips. In a stunning turnaround, the council may also offer free jeeps to pensioners using the service. The limit on shopping bags will be lifted from one to two per passenger. The eight-month review was sparked by Dandenong North pensioner Grace Willans, who took the council to the Victorian Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission over the ban and her treatment by a community bus driver last year. On October 5, the bus collected her and her jeep from home and dropped her off at Waverley Gardens shopping centre. But on the return leg, the driver told her no

such jeeps were allowed — and she could not board the bus. Ms Willans, 82, and legally blind, asked a shop owner to direct her to a taxi rank, where she rang and waited two hours for a cab. Last week, she was reluctant to claim victory until she sees the council’s jeeps on the 11-seater community bus. She said she’s since received plaudits for her Rosa Parks-like (US civil activist) stand. ‘‘Two old ladies on the bus gave me a kiss and a hug and said they’d been waiting for this for a long time. ‘When are we going to get our jeeps?’ they said.’’ Ms Willans, who had used the service with a jeep for six months before the incident, wants to know who ordered the jeep ban in the first place — ‘‘whoever did it was sitting on their brains’’. In February, Greater Dandenong community services director Mark Doubleday told the Journal that jeeps were banned because of occupational health and safety.

We look forward to serving Greater Dandenong for many years to come.

HAD he been alive today Greg Dickson, former owner/editor of the Dandenong Journal, would be relieved that the newspaper to which he devoted so much of his life, continues as a strong voice for the community. He would also be thrilled that the Journal will be a highlight of the Dandenong Historical Society’s 50th anniversary celebrations this Saturday. Greg was a foundation member of the society, joining the committee in 1964. He was assistant secretary from 1965-72, publicity officer in 1973-74 and research officer from 1984-92. From the society’s viewpoint, he is perhaps best remembered for his contribution as editor of its magazine GippsLand Gate for 22 years until his death in 1993. He was honoured with a life membership of the society in 1984. I remember typing Greg’s historical society notes on my trusty old Remington typewriter in the happy days at the Journal office — a weatherboard building — at 1 Scott Street, Dandenong. I recall the long queues of people late on Wednesday afternoons waiting to buy the 72-page Journal for the princely sum of twopence (2 cents).

MARG STORK A MOMENT WITH MARG

Born in Foster, South Gippsland, Greg was the second child of Wilfred and Flora Dickson, who bought the Ouyen and North West Express newspaper in 1918. Wilfred became ill a few years later so Greg and his mother took over running of the newspaper. Greg left school to help his mother and at 13 reported on club sporting results. By 14 he was also acting assistant secretary of Ouyen Racing Club. Greg married Daphne (Zig) Zerbst at Ouyen in 1939 and they were happily married for 54 years. Prior to their marriage, Greg’s mother sold the Ouyen paper and Greg decided to buy the Dandenong Journal. With the help of his wife, and brother Des, Greg turned the Journal into a provincial paper with one Victoria’s largest circulations. In 1962 he sold the paper to Cumberland

Newspapers but was a contributor up until the week of his death. I was proud when the lane beside 1 Scott Street was named Dickson Lane. From their first house in King Street, Greg and his wife Zig moved to a new home in Pultney Street. Greg cared for Zig with devotion when she was unwell in the latter part of her life. Sadly he pre-deceased her. As a journalist and publisher Greg was greatly respected. He did not believe in sensationalism. His reporting was concerned with people and he took a genuine interest in their daily lives, their ups and downs and all aspects of community life. As well as being editor of Gipps-Land Gate, Greg was instrumental in arranging to have Reminiscences of Early Dandenong reprinted, and the publication of the Grand Old Lady of Dandenong, a history of the Dandenong Town hall. Do you have a milestone, memory or question for Marg? Email easteditorial@mmpgroup.com.au or post submissions to A Moment with Marg, c/o The Dandenong Journal, PO Box 318, Dandenong 3175.

place for gardens. This region could be like CERES environmental park — it could be an amazing contribution to this community. It could be a centre for job creation, vocational training, and linking youth to job networks. ‘‘All the community-building stuff comes from having strong, vibrant community spaces.’’ A Greater Dandenong spokeswoman said the council was awaiting ‘‘further information and documentation to support [the applicant’s] proposals’’. ‘‘No timelines on a decision can be given because at this stage further information remains outstanding.’’

A FIGHT is growing over the future of a former gardening nursery site in Springvale South. The owner of the former Treeplanters Nursery site last year submitted to Greater Dandenong Council an application for a $6.9 million 66-unit building, including 28 double-storey townhouses. The site, at 530-534 Springvale Road, neighbours a three-storey Bright Moon Buddhist Society temple. The Dandenong Greens branch is set to decide tomorrow night whether to instead back a campaign for community gardens at the one-hectare site. The vision entails using the existing building as a community centre, which could train unemployed people in courses such as life skills and horticulture, using the nursery’s copious plots for the gardens. The plots and meeting rooms could also be shared by the region’s residents and community groups. Greens regional convener Nina Springle (pictured) said the party’s stance was sparked by neighbouring residents’ opposition to the apartments. There was a need for a community hub in Springvale South, she said. ‘‘It’s the perfect

THE DANDENONG JOURNAL \ JUNE 10, 2013

BY CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS A GROUP of volunteers is opening its vans, homes and hearts to support surging numbers of refugees and asylum seekers in Greater Dandenong. Friends for Refugees (FOR), based at Springvale Uniting Church, is a diverse mix: a former lawyer, a priest, a former journalist, a qualified architect, a former union organiser and a social worker. It’s collecting food, mattresses and provisions to help provide for a ‘‘looming humanitarian crisis’’, as journalist Trevor Grant puts it. He expects thousands more asylum seekers will head from detention centres to community detention in the south-east from July 1, further stretching already-swamped relief services. Last month, an overwhelmed Asylum Seekers Centre stopped registering individual asylum seekers on bridging visas for food assistance. Mr Grant said Friends for Refugees was also a voice for the ‘‘voiceless’’ forced to ‘‘live on thin air’’. Living on a $200 weekly stipend, the asy-

lum seekers in community detention are not allowed to work. They are given shelter but very few provisions for six weeks, while they find private accommodation. The result are three or four-bedroom houses crammed with up to 17 people, sharing one toilet. As previously reported by the Journal in March, a 20-week pregnant Iranian woman was ‘settled’ into an unfurnished house in Greater Dandenong. Without a bed or blankets, she was left to sleep on the floor. Volunteers found her a mattress that she couldn’t afford to buy. Since the story was later detailed in the Sunday Age the group has been flooded with donations across Melbourne but has a shortage of storage space. The group’s co-ordinator and former lawyer Helen Goodman said she was driven to help out of feeling ‘‘ashamed’’ at asylum seekers’ treatment — such as a nine-year-old boy driven to self-harm after four years in a detention centre. Other FOR group members are Reverend Paul Creasey, Bill Deller, Sri Samy and Dwayne Leslie. The group needs storage spaces, vans, drivers and administrative volunteers. To

FEATURESTORY Three Greater Dandenong community stalwarts have been recognised in today’s Queen’s Birthday honours list. CAMERON LUCADOU-WELLS and CATHERINE WATSON spoke to them about their outstanding contributions to the community.

Going the extra mile to help grassroots councillor has made a name for going beyond the call of duty. Roz Blades, a three-time mayor of Springvale and Greater Dandenong, has served as a councillor for 23 years. Outside of her civic duties, she has also helped launch and lead a long list of community groups in Noble Park and Springvale. She’s a member of Springvale Community Aid and Advice Bureau, Springvale and District Historical Society, Noble Park Community Action Forum, Springvale Benevolent Society and the Interfaith Network of City of Greater Dandenong. There’s a long list of former involvements, including helping to set up South Eastern Region Polio Support Group. Today, she has been announced as a Member in the General Division of the Order of Australia for her ‘‘significant service’’ to local government and Greater Dandenong. Cr Blades, a former community nurse, was ‘‘astonished’’ by the honour that she says ‘‘is not about me’’. ‘‘I have been fortunate to be elected by this marvellous community. I want to do it to make life better for people.’’ Since migrating as a 20-year-old with husband Terry from England on the ‘10 pound Pom’ immigration program, she’s been determined to ‘‘give back because Australia has given our family so much’’. She helped out at her sons’ kindergartens and schools, and pitched into a safety house program, organising from home as she looked after the kids. She joined other volunteers in building an adventure playground at Burden Park, helping to raise thousands of dollars. ‘‘Whenever I drive past [the playground] and see families there, I get a kick out of that.’’ As she says, nothing happens without hard work. Since she was first elected at City of Springvale Council in 1987, she has kicked goals of introducing free parking for gold-card veterans in Greater Dandenong, advocating for better public transport and fewer level crossings and for better community facilities such as the recently-awarded Noble Park Aquatic Centre and Noble Park Civic Space. ‘‘I’m in the council to get stuff done,’’ she said.

A

Graham, tireless volunteer IT’S not for nothing that Graham Don has been feted with the title ‘The King of SLAC Castle’. For the past 39 years, he has been at the helm of Springvale Learning and Activities Centre — a hub for students, card players and basketballers. His voluntary work keeps him occupied in his backyard office — its walls plastered with certificates of recognition — for eight hours a day, seven days a week. The community service has earned him an eagerly-awaited Medal of the Order of Australia. ‘‘It’s a relief actually,’’ he said. ‘‘I was hopeful I’d get recognised last year. When it came I was so happy.’’ 10

Grassroots: Roz Blades and Terry. Mr Don reckons that without the work, he’d be dead. He started helping at SLAC — the former Springvale Community Centre — as a parent at the community youth club in 1976. He hasn’t left since, plying countless hours as an executive member and maintenance man. A former naval cadet, he served in the communications unit on the fateful HMAS Melbourne — though thankfully ending his service before the aircraft carrier’s fatal collision with HMAS Voyager in 1964. He volunteers as welfare and pensions officer for the Naval Association of Australia, having also served on the association’s executive. As the slogan plastered on his car states: ‘Once Navy, Always Navy.’

A proud principal THERE’S a pupil who sticks in Kevin MacKay’s mind, one of many. This was a rough, tough kid when Dandenong North was a rough, tough place. He threw his weight around, disrupted the class and made life hard for the teacher. Dandenong North Primary School school had a reputation for handling difficult kids but nothing worked with this boy.

Picture: Wayne Hawkins

In the end, Mr Mackay said to him: ‘‘You can’t go back into that class until you promise me you’re going to behave.’’ ‘‘Up yours,’’ the kid said, or words to that effect. So they put a desk in the corridor. You could do that with naughty kids in those days. After 80 days, he was still sitting there. The teachers thought he was going to sit there forever. Then one day he came to Mr MacKay and said, ‘‘I’m ready to work’’. And he did. Years later, he rocked up to the school. Mr MacKay was still principal but the kid was now a man. He was working as a brickie and he had muscles everywhere. He rushed up and hugged Mr MacKay. Then he told him a story. He was in Brighton one day when a semi-trailer clipped the corner and hit a woman beside him and severed her leg. He had cradled the dying woman until the ambulance came. ‘‘I did it because I remembered what you did for me,’’ he said. ‘‘I thought here’s something I can do to pay it back.’’ Today, Mr MacKay receives a Medal of the Order of Australia for services to education, in particular his 27 years as principal at Dandenong North. For all the honours he’s received, it is hearing

stories like this that makes him proudest. He had already been at 13 schools, including the Langi Kal Kal Youth Training Education Centre, when he arrived at Dandenong North in 1984. Back then the school had such a bad reputation that there were only 380 pupils. ‘‘It was a pretty wild place. There were machete fights in the street, occasional assaults on teachers and we’d spend every Monday cleaning up after the vandals.’’ These days there are about 600 pupils and the school’s results are so outstanding that it has been the subject of several studies and multiple ministerial visits. Eighty-one per cent of the pupils come from non-Anglo backgrounds and 42 per cent of families are in the bottom quarter of educational advantage, but it outperforms most schools in more affluent areas. ‘‘The teaching is fantastic because the children are so well behaved. You’ve got to have that in place before you get to the teaching.’’ The transformation was a gradual one — ‘‘the first step was to get the kids under control’’. He introduced a behavioural management program, based on rewarding good behaviour rather than punishing bad behaviour. Pupils are awarded badges, raffle tickets and house points for good behaviour. Mr MacKay says a very experienced staff is the other factor. ‘‘I’m not the only one who’s stayed here for a long time — we have a very stable staff and they are very experienced at teaching children whose first language is not English.’’ Last week one of the younger pupils wrote him a letter headed ‘‘Why Mr Mackay is a good principal’’. It ends: ‘‘because he’s a nice-hearted man’’. He says the little girl who wrote it gave him a watch. ‘‘I know the family doesn’t have much money. I’ll wear that watch every day!’’ Looking at his long CV, I suggest the R-word must be on the horizon. He laughs. ‘‘Why would I retire? Here I am surrounded by these beautiful children. I’m enjoying every minute of it.’’

Hospital of the future he Valley Private Hospital in Mulgrave is undergoing a $30 million redevelopment and expanding its specialties to become the acute ‘full service’ facility of excellence in patient care in the south-east. Its new intensive care and critical care units offer patients peace of mind and the highest level of care. Its new EOS ultra-low-dose 2-D and 3-D imaging system is a breakthrough in skeletal imaging. The hospital, at the gateway to metropolitan Melbourne, is about five minutes from the Monash Freeway, Princes Highway and Eastern Freeway. Patients come from Gippsland, Casey/Pakenham, Mornington Peninsula, Knox/Rowville and right through the Dandenongs. The Valley is one of only five private

All about imaging: The Valley Private is standing up for the best in 3D diagnosis.

hospitals in Victoria with a 24-hour emergency department and the capacity to handle acute surgery. ‘‘Our hospital has become one of the most technically advanced private hospitals in the region with a $4 million state-of-the-art hybrid operating theatre [a world first], new 30-bed ward, seven new operating theatres and a 10 bed intensive care unit,’’ surgeon Michael Knight said. ‘‘This technology will allow for better patient outcomes through advancements in many of the procedures performed by our highly skilled surgeons and clinical team.’’ The only one of its type in Victoria, EOS uses a small dose of radiation, up to 100 times less than a standard CT. It was created through a partnership between a Nobel Prize-winning physicist and a team of biomedical engineers, orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists who designed the first total solution for orthopaedic imaging. EOS can quickly capture full-body

images of patients in a standing position. It is non-confining — just like standing in a phone booth. An entire body scan takes about 20 seconds for an adult and 10 seconds for a child, with the images instantly available. The high definition images enable surgeons to better diagnose and plan an effective course of treatment. It’s painless and accurate. In most instances, with a referral from a surgeon or GP, EOS can be bulk-billed. “EOS imaging is the future of orthopaedic X-ray. True weightbearing alignment of the entire skeleton can be achieved with accuracy and clarity that’s never been available before,’’ Mr Knight said. ‘‘It is technically easier and faster for the patients at no increased cost. ‘‘EOS should become the standard of care for all hip, knee and spine X-rays.”

COVER STORY

EPITOME OF STYLE \ 799 PRINCES HIGHWAY, SPRINGVALE 3171

P

roton is Greek for the ‘first time’, and that’s an apt description of this superbly renovated block of eight apartments called, you guessed it: Proton. The two-tone, two-storey block is an impressive addition to the Springvale apartment scene, and capitalises well on its central location. ‘‘There’s nothing like it in the area,’’ said Hocking Stuart’s Ritesh Saigal. ‘‘It’s an inner-city lifestyle verging on the middle ring of suburbs. It’s unique in offering lifestyle, an exciting demographic, and South Yarra/Chapel Street chic. There’s a social flavour here: it’s rejuvenated.’’ The block contains eight apartments: four one-bedroom and four one bedroom-and-study. Sizes range from 45-70 square metres and prices from $248,888 to $298,888. The ground-floor apartments have courtyards and the upstairs apartments have views. Inside, everything is new: the cre`me and charcoal de´cor is stunning and bright. Kitchens have granite benchtops, tiled splashbacks and stainless-steel appliances. The lounge rooms have downlights, quality carpets and security intercom. Airconditioning and heating are features. Bright bedrooms have sliding mirrored wardrobes with lots of shelf space and en suites have toilets, glass shower recesses and in-vogue vanities. The block’s marble foyer has a secure entrance and automatic lighting, and the driveway has a remotecontrolled gate. Each apartment has a car park. Outside, the courtyards are large enough for relaxing in the sun or intimate barbecues. Inside, it’s surprisingly quiet. This is a solid block in a central location with Monash University not far away, and the Springvale shops, large hardware stores, Springvale station and EastLink nearby. The agent believes the one-bedroom apartments will rent for $200-$220 per week or $250-$270 for the onebedroom-plus-study apartments. Two apartments will be furnished for display purposes. About 200 people are expected to attend the launch of the development on Saturday, June 22 that will include entertainment and a free sausage sizzle.

CCTV funds welcome Greater Dandenong mayor Angela Long has urged the state government to allocate untapped CCTV funds to the municipality. While other councils have baulked at accepting the funds, Cr Long said Greater Dandenong would ‘‘happily accept funds for further cameras’’. “We know that CCTV cameras alone don’t make our suburbs safer, but we can easily find great homes for more cameras that will work in well with other initiatives.’’ New wireless cameras at Dandenong railway station and in Foster Street, Settlers Square and Halpin Way will be switched on on June 20. They will transmit ‘real-time’ vision to Dandenong police.

Helping Hand Day We Care Services will hold its annual ‘Helping Hand Day’ on Saturday from 10am-noon. Toys, bedding, clothes and food parcels will be distributed to those in need. Anyone wanting

assistance will have to show their health care card or pension card. Helping Hand Day is run at Faith Christian Church, 307 Gladstone Road, Dandenong North.

Residents will choose the size of their streetcollection garbage bins next year. Greater Dandenong Council announced the choice of a 240-litre or a new jumbo sized 360-litre recycling bin, with smaller options for landfill waste and green organics bins. As reported by the Journal last week, the bin lids will be colour-coded red, yellow and green with price incentives to encourage smaller landfill-waste bins. Dandenong-based JJ Richards will be the council’s waste collector for the next eight years. Dandenong South-based Polytrade will receive recyclables.

Kosar Majani is among a group of local and international artists showing the use of veils is not a ’black-and-white’ issue. The artists feature in a Walker Street Gallery exhibition of decorative burqas, veils and their more ‘street’ equivalent hoodies. The display is open 11am-5pm weekdays and 11am3pm Saturdays until June 29 at the corner of Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. The show is also part of the Nocturnal festival night tours of Dandenong on Wednesday and Thursday.

A food van has started serving free sausages outside Cornerstone Contact Centre in Dandenong on Thursday nights. The meals are provided by Manna4Life, a group of Hallam-based Coptic Orthodox church members. Cornerstone co-ordinator Don Cameron said the service meant there were now free meals every night of the week in Dandenong. Sausages are sizzled from 7-9pm on Thursdays in Cornerstone’s car park on the corner of Walker and Robinson streets.

One on one with Lauren BY ROY WARD ASPIRING south-east Melbourne basketballers will get the chance to hone their talents at the newly established Lauren Jackson Basketball Academy later this year. Four-time Olympian Lauren Jackson has joined with training company Smart Connection Training to create a 12-week training academy. The program includes key tactics for on-court success, techniques to improve conditioning, and being guided through drills that will improve their overall performance and skill set. The academy will be open to all 15-18 year olds. Academy lessons also focus on teaching players how to plan for their future career and study options, especially those in the sports industry with those who finish the program receiving a certificate I in vocational preparation.

The academy will host an initial phase of programs at the highly popular basketball centres of Dandenong, Kilsyth, Knox and Nunawading. The highlight of the academy is a twoday intensive Jackson Jam Super Camp at which players will work directly with Jackson and other professional men and women players during the school holidays. Jackson said she was excited about her new academy. “I have always wanted to give more back to the sport of basketball and the youth of Australia,’’ she said. ‘‘This is an exciting initiative for me and gives me the chance to pass on my experience and life lessons to help youth reach their goals and dreams. ‘‘I don’t believe there are any limitations to what can be achieved personally and professionally and I strongly believe in having fun and enjoying

the journey along the way.” Smart Connection Training managing director Martin Sheppard said the program offered a broad blend of basketball and life skills. “It’s not often students get the chance to be trained in their own backyard by one of the world’s top athletes,” Sheppard said. “This program has everything — life skills to help students gain a career in an exciting and fast-paced industry. ‘‘It is also an opportunity to train one on one with Lauren Jackson and have her share coaching tips to improve the way they play basketball.” The program is expected to expand nationally later this year. MOTORING ●

Euro luxury at half the price Ewan Kennedy road tests the Hyundai i30 Premium CRDi

I

mage is everything in the minds of many car buyers. Motoring journalists have a saying, “People pay big dollars for the front two inches of their cars”. The Hyundai i30 Premium CRDi we have just returned after an extended review is a classic case in point. It was positively crammed with luxury items of the sort found in big name Euro cars: leather trim; a panoramic glass sunroof; satellite navigation with Suna traffic control; powered front seats with heating; connectivity by way of Aux, USB and iPod/iPhone inputs, as well as Bluetooth; hands-free phone; audio streaming; keyless go. The list just goes on and on. Despite the huge levels of standard equipment, people gasped when we told them the i30 Premium CRDi had a recommended retail of $32,590 – saying it was a lot of money for a Korean car. Which brings us back to our comments about image being everything – one of the big name German marques in this class would come in at close to $70,000 if loaded with the same gear. Yet

many would have described the $70,000 price tag as being a bargain for a Merc, Beemer or Audi. Power is provided by a 1.6-litre turbo-diesel engine with a high-tech six-speed automatic transmission. We found the transmission nicely interactive as it responded quickly to our desire for a different gear by way of the ‘throttle’ pedal. At motorway speeds our Hyundai i30 CRDi had fuel consumption in the six to seven litres per hundred kilometres range. This increased to nine to 10 litres per hundred in the hard grind of typical city commuting. The best European turbodiesel engines in this class can do significantly better than this, showing that the Asian car makers still have a distance to go in their designs of car diesel engines. Knowing Hyundai, that won’t take long. Hyundai i30 Premium is pleasant to drive, albeit with the nose heavy feeling of any frontdrive car. The driver can vary the feel of the car by dialling up one of three steering modes with Hyundai’s fascinating Flex Steer system.

Class act: Many who commented on the shape of the i30 Premium loved its sleek, stylish lines.

Bulls ponder a squandered lead BY ROY WARD

EFLQueen’s Birthday match

NOBLE Park won’t forget its Queen’s Birthday weekend loss to Balwyn anytime soon — in fact, it will use the result as motivation for the rest of its Eastern Football League division 1 campaign. The Bulls lost to the premiers by eight points in front of a big crowd at Pat Wright Senior Oval on Saturday. The loss came despite the Bulls taking the lead via a goal from Beau Cosson midway through the final term. That lead didn’t last long as the Tigers’ were handed a controversial free kick after an off-ball clash between Bulls defender Trent Robertson and Tigers forward Luke Barker inside the forward 50-metre line just as the Bulls had moved the ball out to the wing. Barker went back and slammed his kick through the goals to give the Tigers back the lead. The visitors put on two more quick goals and held off the Bulls for a memorable win, Barker finished with six for the match. The Bulls got a spirited but pointed talk from coach Mick Fogarty both on the ground and in the rooms post-game. Fogarty demanded more accountability and better conversions from his side. Bulls captain Craig Anderson said his teammates were disappointed with the result. “Obviously being in front in the final term meant we were a fair shot to win it. Then there were a couple of free kicks, dubious ones, and we ended up losing the game. “That’s the way it goes. Obviously we’re pretty shattered because we feel like we can match it with them. “We’ll review the match on Tuesday and move on pretty quick but we will remember this one for a while.” Anderson made a point of saying Robertson’s

free kick was not the sole cause for the loss. Fogarty also urged his players to aim for a higher standard of performance in the final months of the season as the Bulls chase the premiership. “When you have a high-pressure game like today every goal counts, every stoppage counts, every turnover can hurt you,” Fogarty said after coming out a long post-game meeting with his coaches. “Today it hurt us late in that last quarter when we had momentum. “We’re really disappointed with the way it unfolded. We had all the momentum and had a real chance to win the game. There was an incident, then we turned the footy over and that was it.” The Bulls named George Angelopoulos, Tim Kelly, Luke Smith, Vergim Faik and Brett Dore as best players. Cosson kicked three goals. The Bulls and Tigers will have this weekend off as the rest of the league returns to the field. In their next match the Bulls will look to win their first game at East Burwood in half a decade. “We haven’t beaten them over there in five years and now we have to beat them,” Fogarty said. “I’ve got no doubt this group will rise to the

Soccer girls a winner for Thunder

Thunder girls: Dandenong Thunder is growing its girls’ program with teams such as the under-14 squad. Picture: Paul Osta 22

THE DANDENONG JOURNAL \ JUNE 10, 2013

DANDENONG Thunder has long been known for the achievements of its men’s team in the Victorian Premier League. But now the club is also working to grow its girls program, fielding a team in the Football Federation Victoria 13-14C girls competition this season and aiming to field more teams in 2014. The Thunder has fielded under-16 and under-12 sides in the past but this is its first girls side in five years. Thunder girls coach Eva Bukin said the club had 17 players aged between 10 and 14 in its team and she hoped to lure more girls to the club. ‘‘We started in January with two girls who had played the game previously.

‘‘We grew the team from word of mouth through the Dandenong primary schools and the high schools. The team has done quite well so far.’’ Bukin said her players had made major improvements in just six games so far this season and had battled hard despite having such a wide range of ages in their side. ‘‘At the start of this season we had only 11 players and weren’t doing too well but as the skills have developed and their passing has improved we’ve started winning games.’’ Bukin said girls from across southeast Melbourne were welcome to join the Thunder. ‘‘We want to draw more girls in and hopefully have a good solid group of 13 year olds.

‘‘Rather than having the ages all mixed. We’d like to have two teams and build our girls program from there, because there are not too many girls’ sides in the Dandenong region outside of Noble Park and Cranbourne.’’ The Thunder girls train at George Andrews Reserve, Dandenong, from 5pm on Tuesday and Thursday. For more information on the team email dandenongthunder@live .com.au or visit the FFV website. ■ Dandenong Thunder senior men won through to the last eight of the FFV state knockout cup with a 3-0 win over St Kilda City on Saturday. The draw for the quarter-finals will be announced in the coming weeks. — Roy Ward
