the new movement In 2014 the Elite Sports Program for students in senior years continues to gain momentum. The program is supported by Federation University West Sport and is designed to further enhance individuals’ basic training and development. Music, Drama and Dance provide opportunities for students to explore their talents in a variety of group ensembles and erformances throughout the Junior and Senior schools.

in review

In developing such programs the school is constantly looking for ways in which we can work with individuals to ensure they are achieving their best.

The 2013 academic year has again been a successful one for our Victorian Certificate of Education students. The School’s belief is that it should provide a range of programs and support that enables students the opportunity to achieve their best.

year one at a glance

Achievement of good academic outcomes is important for the school for two principle reasons: Academic success is one of the important ways in which students can develop the generic skills that are going to be important in the workplace of the future The Junior School provides opportunities for parents Good academic results deliver students greater choice in terms of post-secondary opportunities. and grandparents to visit students at special scheduled The School is particularly proud of the high proportion of its students who gain admission to their first or second choice in terms of post-school destinations. This is a reflection of not only the high quality of teaching in the school but the extensive careers and vocational guidance services the school provides for its students. ‘It was pleasing to be able to catch up with three of last year’s Year 12 students and talk about their achievements and their plans for the next phase of their education journey,’ Mr. Neal said. Chelsea

Hogarth with an ATAR of 98.85 will be commencing an Arts degree at Melbourne University this year. Chelsea received the highest possible score of 50 in English and 49 in Visual Communication and Design.  Aleisha Clark was the 2013 DUX of the school achieving an ATAR of 99.5 and will be studying an Arts Scholars Program at Monash University. Aleisha achieved a range of excellent results including a score of 50 in Psychology to complement the 50 she also gained in 2012 studying Biology whilst in Year 11.  Stuart Boyd who studied a range of predominately Mathematics and Science subjects has gained admission to the prestigious Bachelor of Engineering (Deans Scholarship) degree at Swinburne University of Technology.

times and events. The aim of these scheduled activities is to let students like Gabrielle spend quality time together with their Nan sharing her learning experience. Year One students are exposed to formal, structured Literacy and Numeracy programs which focus on the teaching of core basic learning skills. Students in their early years at Bacchus Marsh Grammar are taught concepts and skills relating to reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation and all components of a comprehensive mathematics program. Specialist areas at Year One include Art, Physical Education, Information Technology, Music, Performing Arts and Asian studies, all of which are delivered on a weekly basis that encourage and engage students. A diverse range of both core curriculum and interest based programs are offered through the co-curricular program alongside numerous opportunity for sport participation and development.

In the past three years the School has had students achieve perfect scores on five occasions and a number of those students have been awarded the Premier’s Award for the top students in the State. The School is again very pleased with both the range and quality of our VCE outcomes in 2013 and wish all students well as they move to further study, or the workforce.

calder freeway works “Deteriorated” parts of the Calder Freeway near Malmsbury will be fixed by VicRoads as part of new roadworks starting this week. VicRoads northern regional director Mal Kersting said the works would help prolong the road’s life, make the surface smoother and more durable to cater for the high vehicle use of the freeway. There will be new linemarking as part of the project. Works will start tomorrow between 6am-4pm and are expected to be finished by the end of the month. Traffic will be down to one lane in both directions during the works and motorists should factor in an additional 10 minutes in travelling time. \ fund-raiser for fireys A fund-raiser by Terry White Chemist in Sunbury has raised $2200 for the state’s fire services. National Red Balloon Day raises funds to help the Victorian fire services which support firefighters in times of hardship. nationalredballoonday.com \ milestone for netball group Sunbury Netball Association is celebrating 40 years of netball in the town with a function on Saturday, March 22. and 40 junior teams playing at Boardman Stadium. In recognition of the milestone, and the work of the committee and volunteers, the association will celebrate at St Anne’s Parish Hall, Riddell Road in Sunbury. trybooking.com/EEPA \ food to asia action plan The state government’s “Food to Asia” action plan will support food producers, including those in the Macedon Ranges, to export to Asia. Northern Victoria MLC Amanda Millar said the shire was renowned for high quality produce and farming practices and the plan would open the doors for local producers and businesses to expand their export opportunities into the growing Asian market. The Coalition will spend $35.4 million to drive Victoria’s long-term growth as demand from Asia grows. See the plan at: premier.vic.gov.au \ riddells creek plan is go Macedon Ranges council has stuck with a decision it made in December to adopt the Riddells Creek structure plan. A bid to rescind the decision by councillor Henry McLaughlin at last month’s council meeting was lost. The plan sets out how the town will accommodate a projected population growth of 6000 people by the year 2036. Land north of Amess Road and south of the railway line was identified as development areas for housing growth. mrsc.vic.gov.au/riddells-structure-plan \

re you here about what happened last night?” Julie asks from behind the glass. It’s a balmy December evening in St Albans and the Weekly has come looking for the railway station’s last line of defence: two Protective Services Officers going by the names of Kevin and Kuldeep. The duo are among 586 PSOs working across 82 stations. Julie spent much of 2013 sitting behind the protective glass of Metro’s St Albans ticket booth after moving from North Melbourne, and she’s noticed a calmer environment since PSOs began patrolling among the swarm of commuters who flow through the station between 6pm and the last train each night. Despite an Australia New Zealand Policing Advisory Agency survey released last month that revealed a significant decline in Victorian commuters feeling safe on public transport (24.2 per cent) compared to 2008-09 figures (27.9 per cent), Julie believes there’s been a positive change. “A few people say to me they feel safer [at St Albans station]. There’s been quite a few issues.” Like last night’s armed robbery when two PSOs helped police chase down a pair of would-be thieves at a supermarket across the street. While the PSOs’ lines of enforcement outside the station are intentionally vague, assisting police is one of the tasks required alongside their chief concern:

It’s the blue-and-white diamond-patterned floor covering, sweeping down the hallway through to the back living hub, that anchors this sense of flowing space.

But it’s the creamy-white walls, the plush beige carpet, elegantly neutral drapes, stepped cornices and skirts, high ceilings and a set of four streamlined columns in the entry hall that create the richness. Opposite an open study, double doors usher in the main bedroom with a walk-in robe and open en suite with corner spa, big shower and enclosed toilet. Next is an open lounge room with a natural gas log fire set in a smart, contemporary mantelpiece. Next to a meals bay and large family zone, the kitchen is a glam work space with black/

Two columns define entry into a carpeted rumpus room right at the back and a hallway heads to three bedrooms, the main bathroom, laundry with storage and separate toilet. The family room has a glass slider to a pitched-roof pergola above extensive concrete; this is a relaxing spot to share a wine with friends while appreciating the gardens. agapanthus, roses, weeping silver birches and ornamental shrubs. At the side, a path flows under an arbour and is rimmed with roses and silver birches. At the back is the vegie patch and two water tanks of 9000-litre capacity. The owner says he “loves the restful feel of the place and, of course, the wonderful views”. But he’s also enthusiastic about the back-to-the-grid solar power which delivers the family a $5 winter energy bill. Natural gas ducted heating, split-system and double garage: it’s all here. \ carole levy

issan’s Altima – bigger than the Pulsar, not quite as big as the now-departed Maxima (and good riddance) – has been a big seller in the US for years and, now that it’s being made in Thailand and subject to a free-trade agreement (that is, no tariffs), it has finally made it here. It has many attractions. There’s plenty of room inside despite It’s for reasonably compact packaging, it’s well equipped, well priced and no-risk nicely made. But it’s still, essentially, motoring an American car. The suspension rides beautifully but the handling is a bit sluggish and roly-poly. The steering lacks feel and you sometimes find yourself winding on a fraction too much lock, or not enough. Thus it’s a car built for freeways rather than interesting two-lane blacktops. And it gets a foot-operated park brake. Americans love ’em, and they’re the only ones. Everything could be fixed with a bit of ($49,177) gets the 183-kilowatt V6 engine. Nissan Altima What is it? A Nissan that’s more like a Toyota. What’s in it? A 2.5-litre, 127-kilowatt four-cylinder with a continuously variable auto. Is it thirsty? I used 11 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, seven in the country. The official combined figure is 7.5.

Thumbs up It cruises beautifully and there’s nothing to offend anyone.

were developed using NASA research, but they seem unremarkable to me. Sure they’re still comfortable after a few hours but lots of car seats manage that. They are, however, miles better than the seats in the old Maxima. So this is not a car for drivers, it’s for those who are into no-risk, comfortable, ultra-bland motoring. People who prefer being there to getting there. And, as Toyota has found, there are lots of such people. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au
