Of course there are plenty of other options to try. “Try the ‘coniglio in agrodolce’ of braised rabbit in a traditional agrodolce sauce, served with roasted vegies and creamy mash,” Pitruzzello suggests. “Or, for people with a gluten intolerance, there’s our delicious ‘camberi all’aglio’: pan-fried tiger prawns cooked in a creamy garlic sauce, served with steamed rice and salad.” Traditional Italian desserts, such as tiramisu and panna cotta with sweet berry coulis, are also winning diners over. Along with the restaurant, Pitruzzello Estate has a function centre looking out over beautiful views of olive trees and vines. There are four separate rooms varying in size which can hold up to 320 people, and different menu options are available.

ebastiano Pitruzzello, owner of Pitruzzello Estate Winery and Olive Grove in Sunbury, has a long family history with Italian food. “My family was in the cheese industry in Italy and that passion for food was passed down to me,” Pitruzzello says. “After establishing Pantalica cheese in Australia, I branched out into wine and oil making which led to the opening of the business wherein all my passions combined.” With new head chef Sean Daniel running the kitchen the meals continue to impress diners, Pitruzzello says. Daniel’s 26 years’ experience in the food industry has enabled him to create beautiful and delicious food using organic products harvested from Pitruzzello Estate. “Our antipasto Italiano is a great entrée to share; it’s an assortment of cured meats, pickled vegetables, olives from our olive grove and Pantalica cheeses,” chef Daniel recommends. “Or tuck into our polenta e agnello with roasted capsicum, garlic, Spanish onion, capers, diced tomatoes, grilled lamb and bocconcini served on char-grilled polenta.” The menu features many rustic Italian dishes with none more popular than the wood-fired pizzas, including house special Pitruzzello

And there’s a range of desserts to enjoy with coffee, perhaps on our deck overlooking the vineyard.” Nixon says she and husband Bob carefully select the food on the menu to complement their wines, an aspect much appreciated by visitors. And wine fanciers new to the game or those seeking more knowledge can participate in a free tasting tutorial at the cellar door, sampling wines of their choice. “Visitors can taste the Macedon Ranges’ sun and soil in a bottle of Gisborne Peak wine. Our

vineyard grows low-yielding premium grapes for the estate’s wines that include chardonnay, pinot noir, semillon, riesling and lagrien. We also produce a sparkling pinot noir and are continually winning awards for our hand-pruned and picked grapes.” The winery has been named in the top 10 cellar doors in Victoria in The Age Good Food Guide for 2014, and has four eco cottages which are ideal for couples seeking a retreat. “We have worked hard during the past 13 years to position the vineyard and cellar door as a wellknown Macedon Ranges tourist attraction that draws locals and visitors from Melbourne and abroad. “Gisborne Peak Winery is a place where luxury, relaxation, sustainability and fine wine come together.” Gisborne Peak Winery, at 69 Short Road, Gisborne South, opens 11am-4pm MondaysFridays and 11am-5pm Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
