Heathglen Retirement Village resident Lucy Howell would struggle to prepare her meals without the help of Grant Stockdale (pictured). As a Meals on Wheels volunteer, Mr Stockdale makes regular visits to Ms Howell to keep her fridge stocked with meals. He’s one of 50 volunteers and five permanent staff involved in Wyndham’s Meals on Wheels program. The hard work of those volunteers will be recognised today, National Meals on Wheels Day. Council chief executive Kerry Thompson said about 180 residents used the program. ‘‘These volunteers provide an invaluable service to some of the most vulnerable people in our community. [They] do more than supply a meal to residents, they provide conversation and companionship to people who may be socially isolated.’’ To find out more about becoming a volunteer, call 9742 0777.
