Jobs on line: Disabled trainees David Kibby, Erin Peters and Lisa Tronca are disappointed they may lose their jobs at Focus on Taste.

Siege drama: Mornington woman holds police at bay. Page 5

Uncertainty as service shuts BY SAMANTHA ROBIN FIVE out of six disability employment services providers on the Mornington Peninsula recently had their tenders rejected and alternate providers will take over from March 1. Job Focus chief executive officer Michael Paxton said it would shut its doors to clients after 22 years of helping people with disabilities gain meaningful employment in Frankston and on the peninsula. ‘‘It is very disappointing,’’ he said. ‘‘We will keep going till March and then our clients will be allocated a new provider. We will do a handover and assist the new providers as much as possible.’’ Job Focus services clients throughout the region and has offices in Rosebud, Hastings and Frankston. Mr Paxton said it would take time for the

new providers to build up relationships with employers in the region. ‘‘The thing that will be the biggest loss will be the relationship we have with employers,’’ he said. ‘‘That trust and relationship takes time to build and we have spent more than two decades developing these. We also have strong relationships with local schools to help disabled school leavers move into the workforce. We hope these schools will get continued support from the new providers. ‘‘There will definitely be a bit of a hiatus in employment services during the transition period because it will take the new disability employment services providers time to set up and develop those relationships.’’ It also means the Focus on Taste training cafe run by Job Focus will be forced to close its Frankston doors unless funding can be found.

The cafe, which has been operating since 2009, has given many people with a disability a new lease on life and a chance to be engaged in the community. Mr Paxton said the cafe, which serves lunch and coffee, would continue to trade until March 1. ‘‘In the meantime we will be looking at alternate sources of funding to continue the training cafe,’’ he said. A SkillsPlus spokesman said it was also unsuccessful in its disability employment services tender application. ‘‘We were extremely disappointed,’’ he said. ‘‘We have maintained that program on the peninsula since 1993.’’ SkillsPlus has serviced Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula for disability employment and has outlets in Frankston and Rosebud. While its other employment services would continue, its disabled clients would be transferred to a new provider.

Planning and pre-paying your funeral makes good sense.

Bah humbug! Are a few tinsel stars hanging up in Main Street the best that Mornington Peninsula Shire Council can do to celebrate the festive season? I understand the need to be frugal, but really! After a tough year coping with rising utility prices, higher council rates, strained budgets and other doom and gloom, can we not have a little cheer? Surely it wouldn’t break the bank? Ebenezer would be proud!

Post-election thank you Thank you to everyone who voted for me. My congratulations to our new councillors and mayor. Please remember that you are representing all the residents and their needs and requirements, not just

the chamber of commerce. For those candidates and supporters who were not successful, do join and attend the meetings of your local ratepayers and residents’ associations.

Knives thrown at cops in house siege BY SANDRA BULL A MORNINGTON woman was released from Frankston Hospital the day she arrived there by ambulance after a siege in which she threw knives at police and smashed windows. The five-hour drama in Main Street last Tuesday caused traffic chaos as passing vehicles slowed to watch the incident which tied up emergency personnel resources with five police cars, two police critical incident response team vans and two ambulances attending. Police are regularly called to the address. The same woman, 29, held police at bay for four hours in August while armed with a knife. Hastings’ Sergeant John Wardle confirmed: ‘‘There have been continual calls to police over the past 12 months [about the woman].’’ The latest incident began at 8.15am when police responded to a neighbour’s complaint about loud music coming from the woman’s unit — one of about 15 in a block operated by the Department of Human Services. ‘‘She broke her own windows and three neigh-

bours’ windows and was also throwing knives at police [through her broken window],’’ Sergeant Wardle said. After attempting to negotiate with the woman, police entered her unit through the window about 1pm after they feared for her life when she threatened to inject herself with bleach. She was taken to Frankston Hospital’s emergency department for assessment. A Peninsula Health spokesman said the woman was not admitted as she was not diagnosed with mental health issues. A neighbour, who did not want to be identified, said he was shocked when the woman arrived back at the premises that day in a taxi. He said residents were tired of the disruption. ‘‘My main fear is the safety of the community that lives here. She needs some serious help.’’ Sergeant Wardle said the woman was charged the day after the siege with affray, assaulting police [which related to knives being thrown] and criminal damage. She was bailed to appear at the Frankston Magistrates Court in February.

Negotiation effort: The woman peeps through her broken window during the siege. A DHS spokeswoman said: ‘‘The department will be seeking a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal order to remove the tenant from the property. If the order is granted, the tenant

will be linked with support agencies that will assist with alternative housing options. The department is also working with other tenants to ensure they are supported.’’

The ‘big’ problem for young people at risk BY LEE OPITZ

Big ask: Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking for help to keep the program going in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula.

AT least 33 young people in Frankston and on the Mornington Peninsula are in danger of ‘falling through the cracks’ if a successful mentoring program fails to secure future funding. Big Brothers Big Sisters matches people aged seven to 25 with a caring adult for friendship and guidance. The program has been operating in Victoria for 33 years and opened its first chapter for Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula 18 months ago with funding from the federal government. Since then, it has been contacted by more than 50 young people, with 17 matches made. However, program manager Rebecca Wolstenholme said unless ongoing funding was found by March, those remaining on their books and others looking for a ‘big brother or sister’ would miss out. ‘‘We need about $60,000 a year to fund a co-ordinator and will find the

money somehow to maintain the matches we have already made. ‘‘But unless we can get sponsorship or funding from somewhere, we cannot expand the program,’’ Mrs Wolstenholme said. ‘‘Big Brothers Big Sisters is all about getting in early and trying to prevent young, vulnerable people from possibly taking a destructive path. ‘‘Young people present with a range of issues and while there are other support programs out there, many are crisis-driven and are a Band-Aid solution. ‘‘We are all about prevention.’’ Mrs Wolstenholme is seeking expressions of interest from people in the region who would like to join a working group to help promote, market, fund-raise and explore funding avenues for the service. ‘‘The challenge before us is to ensure a long-term presence and to reach more of the young people desperately waiting for a mentor,’’ she said.

‘‘It is clear that this can only happen with the support of the wider community.’’ Mrs Wolstenholme said although future funding was uncertain, Big Brothers Big Sisters would continue to recruit volunteer ‘Bigs’ for the Frankston and Mornington regions. ‘‘The mentor provides someone their young charges can look up to, seek advice from, confide in and share experiences. ‘‘They come from all walks of life, can be married or single, and with or without children. ‘‘They are not replacement parents or social workers, but trusted friends.’’ Mentors are asked to commit to spending one to four hours with young people three or four times a month, for at least 12 months. Training is provided.

Schoolies involved in Peninsula punch-ups BY SAMANTHA ROBIN AND LEE OPITZ SCHOOL leavers have already caused problems on the Mornington Peninsula with groups of youths taking each other on. Detective Sergeant John Coburn of Rosebud crime investigation unit said the trouble started last Tuesday when two carloads of ‘schoolies’ jeered at each other while racing along the Mornington Peninsula freeway at 1.55pm. The passengers cheered, waved and laughed at each other. When the cars finally stopped at the Jetty Road roundabout, a passenger got out, walked over to the other car and punched a 20-year-old Dingley man in the head, Detective Sergeant Coburn said. Both drivers are P-platers and were expected to be charged over the incident which involved eight people. In a second incident involving violent behaviour, two groups of male youths were involved in a verbal altercation that turned physical in Rye. Thirteen school leavers took on two non-

school leavers or ‘toolies’ and it escalated into an all-in brawl. One of the schoolies was knocked unconscious and had surgery at Rosebud Hospital to repair a broken tooth. One youth was charged and more charges of affray are expected to follow in the next few days. None of the people involved are from the peninsula. An extra 10 police officers have been assigned to the peninsula to manage the crowds until December 10, when most of the young visitors are expected to leave. Ambulance Victoria is urging students to stay safe and think about the consequences of their actions. General manager regional services Tony Walker said the end of year 12 was a time for celebration, and should not ruin lives forever. ‘‘People will drink, and let their hair down but everything needs to be done with the intention of waking up the next morning,’’ Mr Walker said. ‘‘For minor accidents, go to a medical centre but if in doubt, call triple-O. We can determine if you need an emergency ambulance. It’s important to know if someone has taken drugs and is seriously ill. We don’t involve the police.’’

Southern Cross wins care tender BY SAMANTHA ROBIN AN expansion of a Rosebud aged-care facility will open up places for residents and staff on the peninsula. Last week, Southern Cross Care was announced as the successful tender to take over the Rosebud Residential Aged Care Service (or Jean Turner nursing home). The not-for profit provider plans to partner with Peninsula Health to continue to deliver a high quality of care to residents, as well as expanding the facility by an additional 70 beds. Southern Cross Care chief executive officer Jan Horsnell said it was wonderful to receive the news about the tender. “We are extremely excited to have been selected as the preferred buyer of the Rosebud Residential Aged Care site and look forward to partnering with Peninsula Health in supporting current and future residents,’’ she said. ‘‘We already have services throughout the state that cater for more than 5500 older people.’’ Discussions are still being finalised but if negotiations are successful, Southern Cross Care is expected to take over the facility by June next year. Ms Horsnell said if all approvals went through smoothly, the provider would be in a position to start building within two years

and expand the facility from the current 50 places to 120. ‘‘It is a big site with lots of possibilities and we will look at what we can do for the future of older people on the peninsula,’’ she said. Staff from Peninsula Health working at the centre will be offered alternative positions within Peninsula Health. New new staff will be recruited for the centre. Nepean MP Martin Dixon said it was a positive outcome for residents. ‘‘I think it is a really good forward step for the community with a commitment of more beds for the ageing population on the peninsula,’’ he said. ‘‘I think when you have a recognised provider with extensive experience in the field in partnership with Peninsula Health, it is a brilliant outcome.’’ Peninsula Health chief executive officer Sherene Devanesen welcomed the partnership. “We are delighted that negotiations have commenced with Southern Cross Care. It has a well-deserved reputation and has the skill and resources to enhance and expand the Rosebud Residential Aged Care Service,’’ she said “We are confident Southern Cross Care will maintain the high standards of care provided by our dedicated staff, all of whom can continue to work with Peninsula Health into the future.

Beach box sets record A BEACH box on the Tyrone foreshore at Rye has fetched a record price of $275,000. Sold within three weeks of being listed, it was snapped up by a buyer from Melbourne who also has a holiday home on the Mornington Peninsula. Real estate agent Jenny Fink of J P Dixon Real Estate said the buyer was delighted to secure the waterfront beach box. ‘‘It is very rare that these beach boxes become available,’’ she said. ‘‘The odds of one coming up for sale on the Tyrone foreshore is a bit like the chance of winning TattsLotto.’’ Ms Fink said the vendor was happy with the purchase price and agreed to sell prior to auction. ‘‘It is a lovely area and these beach boxes are very iconic,’’ she said. ‘‘As soon as the photos went up online, we were contacted by the buyer.’’ The sale price superseded the previous record for a beach box in Rye, which sold for $170,000 a year ago. ‘‘These beach boxes rarely change hands, they are often passed down from one generation to the next,’’ Ms Fink said.

Towering flower takes root in Eden FOLLOWING stints at the Chelsea Flower Show and Chicago Flower and Garden Show, a towering sculpture by blacksmith Jenny Pickford has set down roots at Eden Gardens in Mt Eliza. At four metres tall, the super-sized floral arrangement is the largest flower sculpture in the country and was unveiled last Wednesday morning after an eight-week journey to Australia. Pickford, who travelled from her home in the United Kingdom to oversee the installation, said the sculpture had found “its final resting place” at the Nepean Highway gardens. “It is very well travelled but I think it has found its perfect spot. It does look wonderful in the setting. You have such wonderful light in Australia.” Pickford spent three months creating the sculpture in 2010, using blown glass and galvanised steel, materials the artist uses to make all of her installations. Pickford said she enjoyed working on floral pieces, with her work reflecting the strength and

fragility of flowers. Originally titled Agapanthus and modelled on its namesake, the sculpture was slightly tweaked before its installation in Mt Eliza, as the agapanthus is considered a noxious weed on the Mornington Peninsula. Pickford said she would do some sightseeing in Australia and hoped that the country’s plants would inspire her next works of art. “You have plants we just don’t get in England.” Pickford met Eden Gardens’ managing director Simon Ainsworth and wife Anna at the Chelsea Flower Show, where the trio discussed the piece and the possibility of bringing it to the peninsula. Mr Ainsworth said he hoped the community would embrace the sculpture in the same way staff at Eden Gardens had. “I’m so pleased to bring this acclaimed artwork to the Mornington Peninsula,’’ he said. ‘‘The sculpture’s design has been described as ‘inspiring and uplifting the soul, while making a statement that acknowledges nature’s beauty’. I couldn’t agree more.”

INBRIEF Man knifed in altercation A 30-year-old Rosebud man suffered knife wounds to his neck and arms after an altercation in George Street, Rye, last Thursday. Police allege the fight broke out when the man approached the house of another man in Rye. The Rosebud man was found in Melbourne Road, Rye, shortly afterwards and was flown to The Alfred hospital with severe blood loss. He remains in hospital in a stable condition. Two men, aged 44 and 56, of Rye, were charged with intentionally causing serious injury and were due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this week.

Children linked to school thefts Four children, aged from 11-14, have been cautioned by police over theft at Bittern Primary School after it was broken into twice last week. The youngsters allegedly stole six iPads and nine iPod Touches. The children all live locally, but do not attend the school.

Weapons, drugs charges A 30-year-old Somerville man has been charged with 10 firearms offences after his vehicle was searched at a Frankston North home on November 16. Members of the Frankston police tasking unit got more than they bargained for when they went to the home to investigate a stolen boat that had been advertised for sale. While they

were searching the property, the Somerville man arrived and police searched his car, finding a sawn-off shotgun and three rounds of ammunition in his pocket. A woman arrived at the property in possession of methamphetamine. She received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months for drug possession offences.

Stolen car set alight Two youths have been been placed on a youth bail engagement program and another has been cautioned after stealing a vehicle. The boys, aged from 13 to 15, stole the $10,000 car from a Mt Martha property early last Friday. Police allege they were seen hooning in the car the next day before setting it on fire at Narambi Reserve in Mornington. The car was uninsured.

Two blazes in Mornington Police are investigating two fires in Mornington, which they believe are linked. The fires broke out early on Sunday morning. The first, a grass fire at 2.30am near the intersection of Racecourse and Bentons roads, was started by a petrol bomb. The second fire broke out at the Creative Kids Early Learning Centre in Fleet Street. There was minor damage to the side of the building after a petrol bomb was thrown at the centre, targeting a gas line for the property. A neighbour extinguished the blaze. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Tick of approval Ruby, Jarrod and Patrick were just three of 10,000 visitors who took advantage of a sunny day to a stroll along at the Peninsula Link freeway in Frankston last Sunday. The open day provided the first opportunity for many Mornington Peninsula residents to see a 1.5-kilometre stretch of the $759 million road up close. Due to open to traffic early next year, plans for the road first emerged in the 1960s. Road operator Southern Way and construction company Abigroup have now completed 70 per cent of ashphalting works on the 27-kilometre freeway between Carrum Downs and Mt Martha.

Sustaining the message and having fun BY SAMANTHA ROBIN BALNARRING racecourse was a hive of activity on Saturday when it hosted the first Balnarring Community Sustainability Fair. Run by Balnarring Primary School, the fair raises money to support the school’s wetland and sustainability programs. Crowds had 80 stalls of sustainable clothing, food and crafts to peruse and patronise and children were entertained with face painting and traditional fun activities such as egg and spoon and three-legged races. There was music and live entertainment throughout the day, with a special acrobatic performance by members of Soul Circus. Polly the pig was a hit with children, as were the numerous craft activities. Balnarring Primary School pupils led a tour of the school wetlands and impressed people with their knowledge of sustainable practices. Guest speakers included officers of Mornington Peninsula Shire, South East Water, Beyond Zero Waste and Landcare. Bike and Blends kept children busy as they generated the power to make smoothies. Fair organiser Pea Saunders said there had been amazing support from the local community

to make the event happen. ‘‘Everyone has worked incredibly hard,’’ she said. ‘‘It far surpassed our expectations. The atmosphere was stunning and it was terrific to see so many people sharing ideas of sustainability.’’

FEATURESTORY

Doing it in our own fashion Melbourne’s love affair with horse racing is well known, but the sport of kings is becoming increasingly popular on the peninsula. MELISSA WALSH reports. day at the races has never been easier for Frankston and Mornington Peninsula residents to enjoy. With the Mornington, Balnarring and Cranbourne racecourses nearby, increasing numbers of patrons keen for a flutter, family day out or fashion competition — or a trifecta of all three attractions — are racing through the turnstiles. And as country racing grows in popularity, the stakes have never been higher in terms of the quality of horses and prizemoney for equine and twolegged contenders. Racing expert John Rothfield —aka Dr Turf — says the resurgence of Victorian country racing is particularly apparent this time of the year. ‘‘It’s been promoted really well, the facilities are really good, it’s great for families and, instead of running their big cup days on a Tuesday or Wednesday, they’re now on a Sunday.’’ Rothfield, who has always loved country racing, says that although the quality of the horses may not always be up to the standard seen at Flemington, it’s the atmosphere that attracts people. ‘‘There’s a real sense of community, and they have a vested interest to keep the race vibrant.’’ With the influx of visitors, the benefits for business are many. ‘‘In Avoca, there are just 400 people who live in the town but they attract about 8000 people to the Avoca Cup,’’ Rothfield says. Mornington racecourse manager Angela Cleland says the races there are always popular, with attendance figures and prizemoney swelling. ‘‘It is 12 weeks until the Mornington Cup on February 13, and we have in excess of $1 million in prizemoney,’’ Cleland says. ‘‘The Mornington Cup is Australia’s most lucrative country cup and we will be the first provincial race club in Victoria to be able to achieve this. The Mornington Cup itself is worth $350,000.’’ More than 10,000 people went through the turnstiles earlier this month for the hugely successful Peninsula Cup. ‘‘Mornington Cup is just as popular and we get over 10,000 people on

Best foot forward: A fashions on the field competition at Mornington racecourse. that day, with a more corporate and member emphasis,’’ she says. And as well as the perennial picnic option, the Mornington facilities offer private corporate marquees and dining options. ‘‘In 2004, 2005 and 2006, the Mornington Racing Club was named country racing cub of the year, so we were quite early in the initiatives to promote country racing.’’ Fashions on the field usually generates about $70,000 in prizes on Mornington Cup day. ‘‘It would have to be one of the most popular fashion competitions on the fashion circuit,’’ Cleland says. ‘‘And on a number of our race days

we have free activities for the kids like pony rides and jumping-castles. These race days are really a family affair where people come and picnic on the lawns and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of country racing.’’ On the other side of the peninsula, the Balnarring Picnic Racing Club — named best picnic racing club in Victoria in 2011 and 2012 — has never looked stronger. A non-profit organisation, the club is committed to promoting picnic racing as an enjoyable and familyoriented activity. Set in a bucolic environment, the club provides the opportunity for all to experience the fun of the races in a

casual setting, many patrons settling down for a leisurely picnic among the trees. The club’s history dates back to 1863 when the Hastings and Balnarring Racing Club, as it was then known, began at the same site used today. In the early years, only one meeting, on Boxing Day, was run. After tough times during the Depression, the club was reborn as the Balnarring Picnic Racing Club in 1933 and the first Balnarring Cup was won in 1948 by Helenette. During the 1950s, the club built its first running rail, replacing sticks with small red flags 50 yards apart. In recent years, the club has contin-

ued to develop its on-course facilities. Club secretary Neil Heathcote says there has been a marked increase in numbers. ‘‘In the past five or six years, we have seen a rising trend in patrons to the Balnarring picnic races. I think part of the reason is we’ve increased our facilities, put in a children’s play area, added two large toilet blocks, improved viewing areas of the racetrack, and have a sealed betting ring with underground power, and shade sails for punters.’’ In keeping with the club motto of ‘affordable picnic racing for family enjoyment’, children’s rides and food stalls are always a feature. A race meeting earlier this month drew a record crowd of 4000. ‘‘It was a most excellent turnout. Most country race meets would expect about 2000 so we doubled that,’’ Heathcote says. ‘‘Our prizemoney for some of the races is almost doubled as well, so that attracts more attention to the race club.’’ Charlotte Littlefoot is a regular around the tracks — country and metropolitan — and organised the Myer Fashions on the Field at the most recent Cranbourne Cup. She says country races are considered more accessible for fashionistas. ‘‘There’s every age group, there is more space and it’s not as packed as one of the big metropolitan meets. Country fashion entrants also often create part of their outfit with their own hands,’’ she says. John Rothfield says country races are also the perfect spot for Christmas parties and corporate events. ‘‘They are a great idea because it’s during the day, so people don’t get too stupid, and it’s something different.’’ As for the future, Rothfield is certain a day at the country races will become a regular for many racegoers. ‘‘It’s the country, so relaxed. And it’s moving in the right direction — it’s really strong and really vibrant.’’

Rejuvenated Starfish on their way BY HAYDN GODONY fter more than a decade between gigs, Chocolate Starfish re-formed last year and will perform on the peninsula in The Red Hot Summer tour early next year. “We all need to grow up and have other lives for a while, you probably see that example in hundreds of bands, in the past and in the future,” lead singer Adam Thompson said. “Apart from a few gigs, for the past 10 years I’ve been working on a team-building program where I go into corporations and schools and I get to write and record a song with different groups of people, helping with anything from cyber-bullying to business building. “It’s called Muso Magic and at the moment the work that I do with indigenous communities will see me call Alice Springs home for probably the next couple of years, because it is manifesting into a TV show that will be like an indigenous Video Hits if you like.’’ In the mid-1990s, Chocolate Starfish produced two top-10 albums and six charting singles including Four Letter Word, Mountain and You’re So Vain. Although the band took a hiatus

after their second album, they never officially broke up. “I’m working with our new guitarist Tim Henwood [Rogue Traders and The Androids]. We’ve got about 40 song ideas that developed over the past few years so we are seeing which ones can be taken through to final recordings. I would love to have something digitally available before The Red Hot Summer tour. I am feeling a resurgence of interest in ’80s and ’90s music — in the ’90s, the fact that we were a bit different gave us a niche market. We came on the scene at the time when Nirvana and Pearl Jam were at the front of things but in a way we were the opposite of that, the sort of anti-hero thing, talking about your pain and torture. That just wasn’t us. “We’ve got a definite open mindedness about everything and these days and we’ve got the luxury of not needing to please a record company.’’ Chocolate Starfish will join Jimmy Barnes, The Baby Animals, Ian Moss and Dragon for The Red Hot Summer tour at Morning Star Estate in Mt Eliza on Sunday, January 20. Top pick has what it takes, says coach BY BRAD McGRATH GRAEME Yeats has coached some talented players in his time at the Dandenong Stingrays. And when quizzed about Lachie Whitfield, who was drafted by Greater Western Sydney at No. 1 on Thursday night, he makes a valid point. ‘‘He’s a very worthy No. 1 pick and has done what no junior has done — he has been the most valuable player running around in the TAC Cup for three years running,’’ he said. ‘‘Without peer he has been the most decorated junior playing in the country. There has been a lot of hype about him . . . he has been able to take it to another new level when it counts.’’ There have been No. 1 picks and first-round picks that have been maligned, with Melbourne’s Jack Watts one recent example. Yeats believes the easygoing nature of Whitfield and his dedication will hold him in good stead. ‘‘I would have thought based on his personality it will only challenge him to get better,’’ he said. ‘‘I think he’ll take it all in his stride — he’s very resilient and very tough mentally.’’ Yeats’ thoughts on Whitfield shine through when the Peninsula School student is quizzed

about the pressures he faces in his debut season. ‘‘It does come with its pressures — especially around national titles,’’ he told Giants TV. ‘‘I’m really relieved now being No. 1 and it’s very humbling. It does come with expectation but moving to Sydney it probably relieves a bit of it being a heavily rugby-based state.’’ Whitfield, 19, is already familiar with many of his Giants teammates, having played TAC Cup with them. The midfielder is itching to get started. ‘‘I’m absolutely rapt and I couldn’t be happier with going to the giants. They have got a great future ahead and I’m just excited to be going up there and getting stuck into pre-season,’’ Whitfield said. He is expected to play senior football for the young Giants outfit next season, but he is taking nothing for granted. ‘‘I obviously want to be playing a game next year, but they have a great midfield at the Giants and it will be tough to do,’’ he said. ‘‘I think next year if I can have a good preseason and put some weight on in the gym I might be able to play my role and help out the Giants.’’

No. 1 pick: Greater Western Sydney recruit Lachie Whitfield with his mother Maryanne, father Richard and sister Emma on the Gold Coast on Friday. Picture: Getty Images/Matt Roberts.

Jet set, go: ruckman hits the ground running with Saints BRAD McGRATH PACK your bags, you’re going to Colorado. Mt Eliza ruckman Lewis Pierce had his dream come true when St Kilda called him out at pick 75 in Thursday night’s AFL draft on the Gold Coast. The first call Pierce received from the Seaford-based Saints was from someone quizzing him about his passport. The Dandenong Stingrays youngster was told he had to fly out with the rest of the team on Tuesday for a high-altitude camp in America. ‘‘I’ve got to go and buy some coldweather gear — I’ve just got my

clothes for summer,’’ he joked. There was a huge sigh of relief in the Pierce household when they learnt Lewis wouldn’t be straying far from home. He describes being drafted to the Saints as the ideal situation. ‘‘I was a Hawthorn supporter but St Kilda is so close and with their ruck situation and their developing list I couldn’t be happier,’’ he said. ‘‘Mum was probably the one who didn’t want me to go anywhere.’’ Pierce stands at 202 centimetres but admittedly will be a work in progress with his slender frame weighing just 87 kilograms. The prospect of work-

‘Mum was probably the one who didn’t want me to go anywhere.’ —Lewis Pierce ing with the Saints No. 1 big man Ben McEvoy, the experienced Justin Koschitzke and Gold Coast recruit Tom Hickey has Pierce excited. Fellow Stingray Nathan Wright was also picked up by the Saints with pick 24. Pierce says his teammate’s selection has taken away some of the nerves of joining an AFL club.

‘‘It’s pretty good that you will know someone on your first day there. ‘‘Tom Curran came from Mt Eliza as well and he was training with us when I first started with the Stingrays. ‘‘Darren Minchington is another one at the Saints who is from the peninsula.’’ Pierce, who turned 18 on November 16, said St Kilda coach Scott Watters had spoken to him briefly to welcome him to the club. ‘‘He, with a couple of the other coaches, went through a few goals for the pre-season and the Christmas period,’’ he said. ‘‘I guess I just need to bulk up a bit to make sure I don’t get injured.’’

Pierce joined the Stingrays’ program as an under-15 player. He was also a member of Haileybury College’s successful football program and played the bulk of his junior football with Mt Eliza Redlegs. Stingrays coach Graeme Yeats said Pierce had all the attributes to be successful at AFL level and was confident his injury woes were just ‘‘growing pains’’. ‘‘I haven’t seen many kids at 202 that can pick the ball up off the ground like him. He’s certainly a project player but if you look at players like Sandilands and Cox they took a while’’

Regional footy focus shifts to independent thinking THE AFL South East Region Commission will not be a board of representatives for the encompassing leagues. AFL Victoria is now seeking people to join the commission, which is aimed at decentralising the administration at the top level, increasing local collaboration and providing extra resources at a local level to assist leagues, clubs and umpiring associations to expand the game. The commission will oversee the Mornington

Peninsula Nepean Football League, Frankston and District Junior Football League, Mornington Peninsula Junior Football League, South East Juniors and the Southern Umpires Association. South East Region Working Party chairman Brett Connell said the commission would not be made up of key representatives from each league. ‘‘We want males and females and definitely people from an Australian Rules background who will bring a strategic focus,’’ he said.

‘‘We want people who think outside the square and we’re hoping they will see the greater good to football. ‘‘We don’t want it to be a representative board — we want independent people and independent thinkers.’’ As a result of AFL Victoria’s review of country football, the regional areas in the state have been divided into 13 regions, with eight major and five smaller commissions being set up.

Connell said the AFL South East commission would meet regularly across the year and would be volunteer positions. He stressed candidates must be independent and not hold governance positions within the region, at league, club or umpiring associations while on the commission. — Brad McGrath Expressions of interest can be made to Brett Connell at brett.connell@aflvic.com.au.

Ducs’ skipper makes the right decision BY BRAD McGRATH MOOROODUC captain Bobby Wilson was faced with an unusual decision before his selection in the Victorian Country Cricket League team to play at next year’s national carnival. The star batsman is fresh from playing a season in the Northern Territory during the winter months and had been asked to represent his adopted state at the Australian Country Cricket Championships, to be held in Bundaberg , Queensland, at the beginning of January. But Wilson decided to role the dice and try out for the VCCL team which held its trials on Sun-

day. ‘‘I probably would have played for the Northern Territory if I wasn’t selected for the Vic squad,’’ he said. Wilson is joined in the VCCL squad by Mornington gun Rob Hearn, Mt Eliza all-rounder Justin Grant and Langwarrin offspinner Dwayne Doig. The team also includes players from Cricket Albury-Wodonga, Geelong, Swan Hill, Shepparton, Ballarat, Bendigo and Traralgon. Mt Eliza mentor Jason Mathers is the coach of the VCCL team and played a large hand in the MPCA having its biggest ever representation in the squad. ‘‘We had a trial game on Sunday and I made 37

not out retired and batted well and then they picked the 13-man squad,’’ Wilson said. ‘‘It helps knowing Jason and he knows our capabilities.’’ Each state and territory will be represented at the tournament with East-Asia Pacific also sending a team to the championships. Wilson said he was looking forward to stepping up to state level for the championships and expects it to be a hot competition. ‘‘It probably is the highest standard I have played, along with Provincial at Country Week,’’ he said. Hearn has scored the second most runs in the

MPCA Provincial competition this season with 295 at a average of over 70. Wilson has had a more subdued start to the season but made 66 in Moorooduc’s victory Heatherhill and blasted 120 not out in their Twenty20 victory over Mt Martha. Grant has been consistent with the bat without making a half century for the Mounties but does have a five-wicket haul to his name after tearing arch rival Peninsula Old Boys apart with his seamers. Doig, who crossed from Cardinia to Langwarrin in the off-season, has snared 13 wickets with his off-spinners at a touch over 13 runs per wicket.

Stars slam tons HASTINGS stars Scott Phillips and Brad Watson smashed centuries as they helped their team compile a huge score in their MPCA District Shield clash against Seaford at Seaford Reserve on Saturday. Watson made 116 while Phillips was 135 not out in Hastings’ total of 8-345 with Seaford bowlers feeling the full brunt of the powerful pair. Langwarrin is 0-12 in pursuit of Somerville’s 216 with Simon McEvoy and Mark Cooper the batsmen at the crease. Keith Burdett (66) was the best of the Somerville batsmen. Main Ridge is in trouble at 3-20 after it bowled superbly to dismiss Flinders for 211 in their clash at Cairns Reserve. Pines compiled 8-241 from its 75 overs with Harley Peace-Stirling making 70 not out. Boneo is 1-49 in its innings after bowling Delacombe Park out for 129.

Mornington star’s century bid falls short FORMER Frankston Peninsula Heat star Ben Clements fell just short of a century as he guided Mornington into a competitive position in their MPCA Provincial Shield clash with Mt Eliza at Alexandra Park on Saturday. Clements was left stranded on 99 not out when the innings closed with his team scoring 9-248 from its 75 overs, with the Mounties to bat on Saturday. Mornington looked as though it would surpass 300 but some clever bowling to Clements and skipper Lyle House snaring 6-74 meant the Mounties are well in the clash. ‘‘We couldn’t get Ben Clements out and he was absolutely smashing us so we just manipulated it,’’ Mounties coach Jason Mathers said. ‘‘They have scored about par so it’s an even ball game.’’ Star all-rounder Justin Grant (2-57) was also a [ 46 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

key bowler for the Mounties. The Mounties suffered a blow during the week when the MPCA denied their appeal to have their points reinstated for fielding an ineligible player in the opening two rounds. Mathers confirmed the matter was not granted a hearing, with the players determined to forget the saga. ‘‘It is disappointing but the players have moved on now — we’re a pretty close team and we spoke about it early but now we’ll just concentrate on what we do,’’ he said. Long Island is 1-8 chasing Crib Point’s 206 after Luke Herrington snared the late wicket of Jason Bedford to put the pressure squarely on the visitors. Earlier in the day, Brad Davidson made 82 not out to be the pick of Crib Point’s batsmen. Baxter is 0-10 chasing Moorooduc’s 183 with

Shane McComb (4no) and Darren Uccello (4no) at the crease. Moorooduc’s Shaun Hibberd (45) was the best of their batsmen. The dominance of Nick Jewell continued as the former Victorian player smashed 143 in Sorrento’s total of 8-326 against Peninsula Old Boys at David McFarlin Reserve. He received solid support from Anthony Blackwell (61no) with POB facing a tough ask to win the clash. Thomas Barrand snared 5-38 as Rye dismissed Ballam Park for 114. But Rye is struggling at 7-96 in reply with the Darren Groves-coached outfit still requiring 19 more runs for victory. Heatherhill made 185 in its clash against Mt Martha with John Hille making 45 in the middle order. — Brad McGrath

TYABB will be seeking early wickets with Carrum Downs on the ropes in their MPCA Sub District clash after Saturday’s play at Tyabb Reserve. Carrum Downs is struggling at 2-18 chasing the Yabbies’ 180 after Nathan Hudgson snared two late wickets to put his team on top. Yabbies all-rounder Luke Rus made a priceless 75 after his team lost two early wickets to be in trouble. Josh Hirst was also an important contributor with 46 at the top of the order. A brilliant 164 to Brenton Taylor has Balnarring in an impenetrable position in their clash against French Island. Balnarring compiled 7-388 from 75 overs with French Island needing a minor miracle for victory. Skye will be confident of chasing down Seaford Tigers’ 164 after safely navigating the final 12 overs of the day to go into stumps at 0-26. Pearcedale posted an imposing 9-263 in its match against Dromana while Rosebud needs another 60 runs to secure victory over Tootgarook.
