Arrest after anti-terrorism raid ‘HARDLINEFRINGE’

NEIGHBOURS watched on as a large contingent of police swarmed over an Officer house last week as part of an anti-terrorism operation. The Officer house was among 12 in the south-eastern suburbs raided early on Wednesday by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police. Police also searched properties in Hallam, Narre Warren South, Springvale South, Noble Park and Craigieburn during the raids. Police said they seized a number of items, including a USB stick containing violent extremist materials, computer equipment, imitation firearms and a number of registered firearms during the raids. Adnan Karabegovic, 24, of Officer, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday to face four charges of collecting documents in connection with the preparation of a terrorist act. Wearing a blue jumper and jeans, Karabegovic smiled at two women wearing burqas who were in court to support him when he was brought into the dock.

MUSLIM leaders have distanced themselves from a fringe group targeted in anti-terrorism raids across south-eastern suburbs last week. The president of the Casey-based Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Victoria, Javed Safdar Choudhary, told the Weekly he had not heard of terrorism cells operating in the south-east. ‘‘Nobody has approached or contacted us. We are a very moderate group. ‘‘I haven’t come across anyone who says violence is right, particularly in Australia where we don’t have any problems and we have basic human rights.’’ Islamic Council of Victoria general manager Neil Aykan said he hadn’t heard of the Al Furqan group before last week.

He was charged with four offences of ‘‘collecting documents connected with the preparation for the engagement of a person in, or assistance in, a terrorist act on September 12’’. The maximum penalty for the offence is 15

Mr Aykan said he wasn’t familiar with the group’s ‘‘world view’’ as espoused on its website and Facebook site. ‘‘They have hardliner attitudes. They seem to be in their 20s, single, male, possibly unemployed and alienated.’’ He doubted there would be a general backlash against the Islamic community as a result of the raids. Shandon Harris-Hogan, a researcher at Monash University’s global terrorism research centre, said the group’s fringe profile fitted the mould of recent home-grown terrorism groups. ‘‘From 2004 on, these groups are from an isolated fringe of the community and broken away from a mainstream mosque.’’ — Cameron Lucadou-Wells and Catherine Watson

years’ jail. Deputy chief magistrate Jelena Popovic asked Karabegovic if he spoke English and understood the charges against him. He was remanded in custody. — with The Age

Sci-fi musical Pakenham’s Tara Leigh Dowler will be taking a different orbit in a musical next week. Dowler plays Bosun Arras in the Monash University Academy of Performing Arts production of Bob Carlton’s Return To The Forbidden Planet. The musical is based on 1956 cult film Forbidden Planet, Shakespeare’s The Tempest, black and white television, and the rock’n’roll hits of the 1950s and 1960s. It runs at Monash University’s Alexander Theatre, Wellington Road, Clayton from September 26-29. Details: monash.edu/mapa.

Spare those trees The Casey Significant Trees Register 2011 was approved by the council and an ‘environmental significance’ overlay gave individually identified trees planning protection until May 2013. In a media release dated June 6, mayor Sam Aziz announced: “Council moves to protect significant trees in Casey.” The council lodged a ministerial amendment seeking permanent planning controls. The National Trust Casey-Cardinia Branch became aware that the council planned to remove all the ‘significant’ trees in Old Coach Road and

wrote to the mayor and councillors on August 6 , pleading that Casey adhere to its own planning controls. There was no response to this letter. On August 8, Cr Aziz announced that 28 significant trees in Old Coach Road would be removed in the interests of public safety. Without individual assessment, it seemed incredible that every single one of these trees should become immediately dangerous. The National Trust joined with the Residents Ratepayers and Friends of Berwick and successfully gained a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal enforcement order that prevents the council removing all the trees. Only three nearest the house have been removed under an exemption. At this hearing it was established that the council’s arborist gave Casey three options — retaining the trees as they are and carrying out works in three to five years’ time, pruning the eastern property side, or removing them. Why would the council now choose the last option? Ruth Crofts, president, National Trust, Casey-Cardinia Branch

Casey’s youth services

youth suicides in the Casey area and, like so many others, was extremely distressed by these tragic incidents. Perhaps someone should ask the City of Casey how their youth services are travelling since they had cuts in federal funding in 2010-11, refused to contribute the $100,000 to continue an outreach service to young people in outlying areas of Casey, and then sacked about five youth workers from its service rather than keep them on. They should be ashamed. Lochster (via web)

Baillieu fails us I was extremely disappointed to hear that Chisholm Institute of TAFE has been forced to cut 220 staff, but I can hardly say I’m surprised. Since Ted Baillieu came to power, we’ve seen the biggest cuts to education in living memory. I really feel for young people who are now weighing up their career options in the final years of high school. It’s difficult enough for young people to choose a career without seeing government budget cuts destroy their career options.

Message spreads from suicide forum YOUTH suicide and depression has taken a toll on the community and schools in the outer south-east, but a recent youth suicide forum in Casey’s civic centre and a sobering Four Corners investigation has stirred many people to action. ‘‘I came as a representative to the Youth Suicide Forum to get more of an understanding of what was happening — and it’s actually led me to go into social work,’’ says Monash University welfare officer Rhiannon Corcoran. The Pakenham student organised a barbecue last Thursday at Monash University’s Berwick campus for R U OK? Day, a national campaign to encourage people to help each other. She said that although her campus had good services — which she had used herself — she was keenly aware of the lack of support for youth suffering with depression. ‘‘I think we’re lucky being a small campus, it’s very close and we’re close

to staff. We deal with situations quickly. But I know plenty of people who have dropped out, or don’t have access to these services.’’ The Four Corners program, which coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day, featured interviews with the principals of Beaconhills College, St Francis Xavier College and Berwick Secondary College, all of which have been affected by youth suicide. St Francis Xavier College principal Paul Desmond said it had a positive effect on the school community. ‘‘There were lots of phone calls from parents and emails, most of them supportive and grateful that they’d watched it with their children. Many of them — myself included — said this was the first time they had spoken about this with their children.’’ Berwick Secondary College principal Kerri Bolch told the Weekly she had consulted widely with her colleagues — both at her school and with fellow principals — about the program and the impact it might have on students and staff.

‘‘My school, St Francis and Beaconhills all sent letters home to parents last week to notify them about the episode. We recommended that if any student wished to watch the episode, parents watch it with them. ‘‘In my letter, I listed the range of welfare support that is on hand at our school every day via our student welfare team, which includes a welfare coordinator, a social worker, chaplains and a nurse. Mr Desmond says that although his school would now be introducing rigorous mental health training for its staff, more needed to happen beyond the schools. ‘‘The community bodies that exist need funding. They’ve got the expertise, but they need to broaden their expertise. Psychiatric care is very expensive and, as we saw on the show, it’s hard to keep that going.’’ Beaconhills College principal Tony Scheumack agrees. ‘‘There’s no headspace [youth mental health centre] in this part of the world, so we’re trying to build stronger links with the community.’’

BUILT-IN WARDROBES

Balloons and a barbecue helped brighten a gloomy day as students at Monash University’s Berwick campus marked last week’s R U OK? Day, a campaign that encourages people to reach out to friends, family and even strangers who might be feeling lonely or depressed.

Chisholm cuts staff, courses Chisholm Institute will shed more than 220 staff and cut 27 courses in response to a $30 million cut in its budget. Chisholm chief executive Maria Peters broke the news to staff from its south-east campuses at a meeting at Chisholm’s Dandenong campus last Tuesday. Staff have a week to apply for a voluntary redundancy. The institute has not yet disclosed how the cuts will affect individual campuses, including Berwick, Dandenong and Cranbourne.

Gunman jailed A gunman who opened fire on Victorian Liberal MP Lorraine Wreford’s Berwick home while she was asleep inside was jailed for at least six months last week. Mark Ahern, 28, was armed with a .22 calibre sawn-off rifle and wearing a balaclava when he fired eight shots into the front door and window of Ms Wreford’s house and a car parked in her driveway. Ahern, 28, pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to reckless conduct endangering serious injury, possessing an unregistered firearm and using methamphetamines. He was ordered to pay $2200 in compensation to Ms Wreford, a former mayor of Casey.

Heavy equipment stolen A John Deere Gator utility vehicle valued at $20,000 was stolen from WoofPurNay in Belgrave-Hallam Road overnight on September 4. A week earlier, an intruder broke into a shipping container at Southern Obedience Dog Club in Soden Road and stole a John Deere ride-on mower valued at $24,000. Information to Casey CIU, 9705 3135.

In the business: Lei Feng works for B2Cloud making smartphone apps. App happy: Dexter Eugenio is in the midst of developing his first iPhone app.

Picture: Ted Kloszynski

Picture: Rob Carew

An app a day, every day slingshot that has birds flying through the air smashing into pigs. A samurai sword that slices and dices fruit. Simple ideas. Big money. But among all the success stories of apps for smartphones that have gone on to become a global phenomenon there must be many that never really took off. So is it worth taking a risk by dipping a toe into the world of app development — and how do you go about this? Recent statistics show there are now more than 650,000 apps in the iPhone app store and more than 30 billion apps have been downloaded. Google’s store for Android apps offers more than 500,000 apps and has been around for a shorter period than the Apple model. Rowville resident Dexter Eugenio is in the process of developing his first app. He came up with the concept and has outsourced the building of the app to a company based in India. During the development process Mr Eugenio, 35, has been in touch with the developers every day, mainly via Skype conversations. ‘‘I feel like I have 100 per cent control,’’ he says. His is an entertainment app that is a questionand-answer situation posing different challenges in life such as: ‘‘Would you rather earn a lot of money in a job you hate or make little money doing a job you love?’’ The questions and answers can then be shared via social media. ‘‘The app is still about a month away,’’ says Mr

A

[ 8 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

These days it really seems there is an application — or app — on your phone for everything. You can watch a baby grow, use a timer to cook the perfect egg and get advice on local restaurants. But have we reached an app saturation point or are there still good ideas to be had? CLAIRE THWAITES investigates what Melbourne’s east is up to when it comes to app development. Eugenio, who works in IT and has toyed with app ideas before. ‘‘But I wanted something that is very easy to share.’’ He said there will be both a free and paid version of the app — named Chooze — with the free app having banner ads incorporated. ‘‘I didn’t think I was just going to create this app and make millions straightaway. ‘‘But I did some research and found the marketing of the app is more important than the app itself. I want this app to get me noticed. ‘‘I can’t wait for it to be finished.’’ Clayton resident Lei Feng is an app developer who works for Armadale-based business B2Cloud. He says the biggest goal for him when developing an app is to ensure it is user-friendly. ‘‘It’s all about maximising user experience. ‘‘You really want to hide that technical detail from users and make it engaging.’’ He says anyone thinking of creating an app needs to have a clear direction about how the app will work and that it will be simple to use. Recent apps Mr Feng has worked on include

September 18, 2012

an Ambulance Victoria app that instructs people on CPR procedures and other first aid tips, a guide and tourism app for the Great Ocean Road and Thinking Of You, a social networking app that has been available for the past two weeks and helps people buy presents for special occasions such as birthdays and anniversaries. The apps can take anywhere from one to three months to create. He says offshore app creators like the ones Mr Eugenio is using do not pose a huge threat to local business as many people still prefer face-toface consultation. ‘‘If you go overseas then they are not going to be as efficient and accountability will drop.’’ Mr Feng, who studied at Monash University, believes the market has not been saturated yet — particularly among Australians, who are keen consumers of apps. ‘‘We still have a long way to go. It’s a huge market.’’ Deputy chief executive officer at Yarra Ranges Regional Marketing Lincoln Wilson has been in the app game for a while now. His was the first regional tourism body to have

an app — a tourism app, launched in June 2010, that is a visitor’s guide to the Yarra Valley and Dandenongs. Since then the free app has been downloaded more than 6000 times. Mr Wilson says the biggest challenge YRRM faces with the app is waiting in queues at Apple for updates to go through. He says there are ways around this when creating a new app by making it manually updateable — something he highly recommends. ‘‘They are not always that easy to be updated,’’ he says. ‘‘Your updates go into a queue at Apple and then you have to wait until it gets checked by an actual person on the other end. ‘‘It used to only be about nine or 10 days — now that there are so many apps it is months. ‘‘There was a period when the wait was four or five months. It can be quite painful.’’ He says as Apple gets a commission on the paid apps they tend to get priority over free apps. Yarra Ranges has also joined with the Mornington Peninsula and Phillip Island in the app named Melb Touring, which was released just over a fortnight ago. So whether it be finding love or finding a decent coffee — there are apps out there to make our lives easier, more organised and to keep us entertained. And with reports of a nine year old in Singapore writing his own app — you are never to young to give app development a go — it could be your ticket to financial success.

Bright idea keeps Sarah on learning curve BY DAVID SCHOUT SARAH Clarke is a Narre Warren child who toughs out every day. Her uncontrollable epilepsy means she has multiple seizures every day, ranging from five on a good day to 40 on a bad one. An aide must always be by her side, watching every move. ‘‘Sarah doesn’t get to be a normal child. I guess you could say she has a sheltered life because of her condition,’’ her mother Marie says. Last year, when Sarah was in grade 2, the frequent trips to the doctors took their toll on her schooling and she was placed in the Ronald McDonald learning program. The program meant Sarah was able to continue with her classmates, while getting extra individual help. ‘‘The program was amazing, unbelievable. Sarah’s teachers [at Strathaird Primary School] all said it was brilliant for her development,’’ Ms Clarke says. ‘‘I’m actually quite devastated that it’s over,’’ she says with a laugh.

The program included 35 one-hour sessions tailored to Sarah’s needs. ‘‘Sarah’s a bit behind in her maths, so the program deliberately helped her with that. ‘‘Sometimes her tutor would actually come to class and help her out while she worked with her friends.’’ Ms Clarke says her daughter’s life is marked by sporadic seizures, although she is having a ‘‘good run’’. Ronald McDonald learning program co-ordinator Lisa White says children who miss large periods of schooling need to be catered for. ‘‘With medical advances more children survive serious illnesses these days. Although they are sick children and miss large periods of schooling, making up for this lost time becomes the next major challenge for families.’’ “Sarah is an inspiration to everyone for her determination to get back to school and living a normal life.” She celebrated her graduation from the program with friends recently and, by all accounts, ‘‘had a ball’’.

Determined pupil: Nine-year-old Sarah Clarke enjoying her graduation from the Ronald McDonald learning program.

riendship, unity and equality — it’s a theme that has struck a chord with the Fountain Gate Secondary College students putting the finishing touches to their first music video. Year 8 students from the school’s High Achievers program are working on their entry to a song competition called CREATivE CHANGE GenerationOne. The national contest for primary and secondary schools, now in its third year, is part of a campaign to end the disparity between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians in one generation. Secondary schools are asked to perform and film their own song, using the Warumpi Band’s song Blackfella/Whitefella as a starting point. Fountain Gate teacher Tracey Boekel said the group decided their song’s main themes should be friendship, unity and equality. ‘‘The students then got into groups and wrote their own lyrics and melodies and together we chose the ones we thought were the best.” She said few of the students played an instrument but the group was enthusiastic about taking

Crafty Kids Make A Book Worm Bookmark Gift To Keep Pages From Wiggling Away!

How to make your own play dough Supplies:

Supplies: Craft Foam, Chenille Stems, Wiggle Eyes, Ribbon Fine-Tip Marker or Dimensional Paint, Craft Glue, Scissors.

2 cups of plain flour 4 Tablespoons of cream of tartar 2 Tablespoons of any vegetable oil 1 Cup of Salt 2 cups of boiling water food colouring

Instructions: For the body of the worm, cut several circles out of green craft foam (you can use felt or paper if you like).

Instructions:

Using dabs of craft glue, assemble the worm body as shown in the photo.

Place all the ingredients into a bowl and mix together. The cream of tartar may cause some fizzing but over time will mix in well if you keep blending.

Shape a piece of chenille stem into a pair of glasses and glue it into place. Glue the wiggle eyes into the glasses. Using a marker or dimensional paint, draw a mouth on your worm.

Turn out into a plastic mat or bench and knead together well

Cut several pieces of ribbon, about an inch and a half long. Glue one end of each ribbon piece to the back, top of the worm’s head. Let the glue dry.

Now you can add some food colouring to turn your dough into colourful play dough.

To add a finishing touch to your bookmark, use the marker or dimensional paint to write a special message on your worm. G5401108AA-dp17Sep

Cooking with the kids Tiny Teddy cars

3-ingredient biscuits

Prep Time: 20 mins Cook Time: 2 mins Ingredients: • 100g milk chocolate, melted • 1 bag Milky Way bars (you will need 24) • 1 box Tiny Teddy biscuits, honey flavour • 1 bag Smarties (340g) Method: Set out a tray or serving plate for the Teddies. Sort the Smarties into colours and cut 12 Smarties in half with a sharp knife to use for steering wheels (keep in mind steering wheel colours need to match with wheel colours). Remove the wrappers from the Milky Way bars. Cut 24 Tiny Teddies in half at the belly button using a sharp knife. Place the melted chocolate into a resealable bag and snip a tiny corner off. Squeeze out a few drops of chocolate to glue 4 Smarties ‘wheels’ on each car then place on the serving tray. Place a few drops of chocolate on the top of each ‘car’ and sit the Teddy’s on. Place a drop of chocolate on the ‘car’ in the front of each Teddy and glue on steering wheels.

Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 15 mins Ingredients: • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 egg Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Place all ingredients into a bowl and combine well. Roll tablespoon sized balls and place on the tray. Push down each one with a fork. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Leave to cool on the tray for 5 minutes and then further cool on a wire rack. Notes: • If you mixture is a little too dry you can add a few drops of milk to moisten it. • I like to make a double batch of these so we cook once and then eat twice. • These are delicious if you spread Nutella on them and sandwich them together.

CAREERS ●

Cold-blooded passion Reptile wrangler Adam Sapiano is rapt, and wrapped, with his career, writes Rebecca Miller s a child, Adam Sapiano loved being in touch with Australian fauna, but he never dreamed he’d work with its inhabitants up close. ‘‘Growing up, I was always an outdoors kind of kid. I spent a lot of time down the river looking for blue tongued lizards, but I never thought I’d grow up as a snake catcher,’’ Adam says. Working with reptiles daily requires special skills and courses, but for Adam it’s all been worth it. ‘‘Snake catching started as a hobby. I’ve kept venomous and nonvenomous snakes as pets for a number of years and I became a snake catcher three years ago. ‘‘At the start, I would catch snakes for people on my days off, but now it’s a full-time service.

A

‘‘There’s courses available in venomous snake-handling recommended for people who want to take on that job. They’re also required to be licensed by the Department of Sustainability and Environment.’’ Adam is a wildlife controller who covers most of Melbourne’s western suburbs, but he says he’ll travel anywhere to catch a snake. ‘‘Calls generally come from someone who has found a snake in their backyard or inside the house. Once I’ve caught the snake, it’s relocated to a safe environment for the public and the snake’s sake.’’ Adam says there’s no typical week for him, but as snake catching is seasonal, once the weather warms up he can get up to six calls a day. ‘‘I have calls for tiger snakes in bedrooms, toilets, front and

backyards, roofs and on the beach. I’ve been called out at 2am to catch what ended up being a rubber snake.’’ Career highlights include catching five snakes in one day. ‘‘One of the most memorable days was catching two tiger snakes, one in Hoppers Crossing, the other in Werribee, and three copperheads in Kyneton, Woodend and Lancefield.’’ Adam says releasing snakes into their natural environment is the most rewarding aspect. ‘‘It’s good to know I’ve done my bit to help keep both the public and the snakes safe from harm.’’ Despite his hobby turning into a career, Adam spends his spare time caring for a private reptile collection. ‘‘I keep pythons, elapids (venomous snakes), monitors (goannas) and dragons.’’

previous model. This gives the Civic hybrid added torque off the line and it has plenty of performance for day-to-day driving. Having covered almost 2000 kilometres to date, we have found the Honda Civic hybrid using fuel in the range of 5.6 to 6.2 litres per hundred kilometres in commuter driving in town. This can be pulled down to the high fours on motorways. A mixture of city and country driving usually had the fuel meter sitting in the low to mid fives. Owners of turbo-diesel cars will point out that they can achieve similarly low fuel figures. However, diesels put out significantly more CO2 than petrol-hybrids. The Honda Civic hybrid is rated at 104 grams per kilometre in the Green Vehicle Guide, whereas diesel cars of this size typically push out 150 to 160 grams — a huge difference. The Civic hybrid loses a little boot space to house its battery. Prices start at $35,990, not including government or dealer delivery charges.

onda brought the first mass-produced hybrid to Australia early in 2001. The Honda Insight was something out of the ordinary, not only in its petrol-electric powertrain but also in its radical styling. Hindsight says Insight didn’t make a lot of sense in our somewhat conservative market and sales were slow. Its $50,000 price tag didn’t help either. You could get into a mid-range Honda Civic for less than half of that. Honda quickly learned its lesson so from 2004 began to import Civic hybrids rather than Insights. These have been moderately successful in the sales race over the years. With the new-model Civic hybrid for 2012, Honda is making a strong sales and marketing push. It gave several motoring journalists the opportunity to live with a Civic hybrid for six months. We are halfway through that period and are thoroughly enjoying the experience. Major changes have been made to the electric motor and it’s now powered by a lithium-ion battery in place of the nickel-metal-hydride of the

Pies have the edge

Soaring Eagles thwart Gulls BY BRAD McGRATH CRANBOURNE will square off against Narre Warren in the MPNFL Casey Cardinia League grand final at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles earned the right to defend their crown with a 15.20 (110) to 8.12 (60) win over a plucky Tooradin-Dalmore at Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. Eleven goals to spearhead Marc Holt was the catalyst for the victory, the league best-and-fairest clearly outpointing Samuel Watson. Holt, who also booted seven behinds and took his season goal tally to 149, said his team was ready to face the Magpies. ‘‘We just had to put all of our focus on Tooradin and get the result and we did that,’’ he said. ‘‘Today’s game was not as physically taxing as I thought it might be. ‘‘We have a great fitness base and we’ll be able to recover well and give it everything on Saturday.’’ For Tooradin-Dalmore, Ryan White had 32 touches and Beau Miller gathered 20. Seagulls ace Matt Wade was subdued, with Cranbourne continuously dragging him deep into defence. Seagulls coach Tom Hallinan said he was proud of his team’s efforts after they got a thumping at the hands of Cranbourne a fortnight ago. ‘‘That little bit of inexperience cost us,’’ said Hallinan, 37, who will play on next year. ‘‘They have those nuances down pat and have been together for three or four years and when we’re in moments of question we’re not quite as good at making the right decision. ‘‘It was a game of opportunities and we had to take ours more than they had to take theirs.’’ The Seagulls threatened briefly in the third term with Mark Engley booting three goals. But Justin Berry’s brilliance in snapping two majors and a further three goals to Holt gave the Eagles a six-goal buffer at three-quarter time. Cranbourne dominated the opening half with its amount of play failing to reflect in the 32-point halftime lead. A statistic told the story, with the Eagles boasting 17 scoring shots to five at the long change. Holt had five goals to half-time and Matt Rus and Ryan Davey were prolific. TOORADIN-Dalmore coach Tom Hallinan believes Narre Warren deserves favouritism for the MPNFL Casey Cardinia League grand final. The Seagulls mentor is in a better position than most to judge, having lost to Cranbourne in two finals and having seen firsthand the brutality of the Magpies during the regular season. Cranbourne will be coming off a six-day break after their impressive dismissal of Hallinan’s charges on Sunday. Narre Warren have enjoyed a week off, thanks to their victory over the Eagles in the semi-final. Remarkably Narre Warren and Cranbourne have lost only to each other this season, highlighting how dominant the pair have been. But the hard fact is that the Magpies will be far fresher, having finished minor premier and then defeating Cranbourne in a cliffhanger in their only final to qualify for the big dance. ‘‘Narre should win with the fresher legs and a bit more desire,’’ Hallinan said. ‘‘This game will take a lot out of Cranbourne and they have had two of them in a row now and I think Narre should run over the top of them in the second half.’’ Berwick coach Dean Rice, who will have his coaching tenure decided in the next week, said the Magpies’ fresher legs should help them prevail. ‘‘I think Narre Warren will win it,’’ he said. ‘‘I think they have got the advantage of the 14-day break and I think they have some younger players and combine that with the freshness that they have and I think they should win.’’ Clint Evans, who has taken over from Austinn Jones as Beaconsfield coach, agrees the Magpies’ rested bodies will finish the match stronger. ‘‘I think Narre will win it and mainly because of fitness,’’ he said. ‘‘Cranny have played three weeks in a row and coming off a six-day break it will be hard for them. ‘‘I think if it’s close at half-time Narre should be able to run over the top of them.’’ — Brad McGrath

Eagles quick off the recruiting mark with key signing BEACONSFIELD coach Clint Evans has secured his first recruit as senior coach with highly regarded Clint Williams joining the club. Williams, 31, has coached Nar Nar Goon in the Ellinbank and District Football League for the past six seasons but has agreed to join the Eagles as an assistant coach. Evans has quickly stepped into the Eagles’s hot seat after Austinn Jones took up the senior coaching role at VFL club Bendigo Gold. He said Williams would provide some valuable leadership at the Eagles and had proven himself as a great senior coach after taking Nar Nar Goon from strugglers to the 2010 premiership, ending a [ 30 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

30-year premiership drought. ‘‘He’s a forward pocket or half-forward and he’s a real experienced type down forward that we need,’’ he said. ‘‘He took Nar Nar Goon to their first premiership in about 30 or 40 years and he took them over when they were near the bottom.’’ Evans, who was an assistant coach to Jones this year, said it had been a seamless transition into the main job and said his recruitment drive was well under way. He said the Eagles were chasing a key forward and a key back man, pointing to the Casey Cardinia League pacesetters Cranbourne and Narre Warren both boasting power forwards.

September 18, 2012

‘‘We haven’t stopped since the season finished,’’ Evans said. ‘‘Silly season starts now and we’ve got to try and recruit a few over the next few weeks. ‘‘We’ve got to get pace through our midfield and a key full forward and a key back man. ‘‘If you look at the top four teams, they all had that big forward who could kick goals.’’ Evans will lead the Eagles into an exciting new era with the club set to play its matches at a new facility, with their long-term home at Perc Allison Oval being farewelled in their final home match this year. — Brad McGrath

be honest,’’ she said. ‘‘We have a lot of depth at Waves now and we had a very good season.’’ The Waves are expected to have a similar team, with the club deep in negotiations with import Mwai Kumwenda to return for a third year. Emma and Kellie Somerville are weighing up their futures and are yet to commit to the club for next season. ‘‘My goal is to definitely build on where Robynn left off — it’s unfortunate that she had to leave,’’ Houben said. ‘‘I will have the same championship assistants [Steve Murray and Meagan Dell] so it should all be similar. The Waves kicked off their selection trials yesterday with the championship, division 1 and under-19 teams to be chosen over the next fort-

night. The Waves also announced Maxine Wauchope would be continuing in her role as Waves’ head coach. Fitness coach Nathan Bonney has also been signed up for a second season after impressing in his first year in the job. The division 1 team will be co-coached by Jessica Whitfort, who coached them to their first finals appearance before having a season off in 2012. Her coaching partner is yet to be announced but former South Australian player Wendy Frost has agreed to a part-time specialist coaching role with the team. The under-19 team will again be coached by Shelley Haynes, with Kaye Tomlinson to be a specialist coach.

CRANBOURNE star Marc Holt has been crowned the Norm Walker Medallist as the MPNFL Casey Cardinia League’s best and fairest player. The champion full forward won in a thrilling finish from Tooradin-Dalmore star and two-time winner Beau Miller. The pair were tied on 18 votes each with one round remaining, with Holt receiving one vote for his seven goals against Doveton while Miller failed to poll. Holt booted 130 goals from just 14 matches during the home and away season and has played a large role in the Eagles’ march to Saturday’s grand final. Beaconsfield captain Daniel Mislicki was two votes further back in third. The team of the year was also named at the vote count held at the Mornington Racecourse on Monday.

Waves find new coach to steer team PENINSULA Waves have appointed Claire Houben as their championship coach for next season. Houben takes over from Robynn Pym, who stood down after guiding the Waves to their first top flight Victorian Netball League finals series last season. Houben coached the Waves’ division one team last season and has more than 25 years’ experience coaching, with stints at association, region, state league and state levels. Before coaching at the Waves Houben coached Wangaratta in the Ovens and Murray League and coached the league under-17 representative team. ‘‘I’m really looking forward to next season, to

Hills turn tables on Eltham ENDEAVOUR Hills’ under-18 team is the Victorian Rugby Union premier. The Hills reversed their previous two losses to Eltham with a hard-fought victory in the grand final last Saturday week. ‘‘Eltham is a well-disciplined team, their forward pack is their key and they have produced some of the most consistent rugby all year,’’ Hills coach Paul Maihi said. ‘‘They were the only team that twice beat us in the regular season and our boys knew that they had to lift their game if they wanted to taste success.’’ The lead changed several times throughout the clash in what was always going to be a tight affair. Maihi believes a strong team bond was the catalyst for the victory. ‘‘Overall, Hills had to be a champion team to overcome a team of champions and, needless to say, I was very, very happy when they succeeded.’’ Hills’ Francis Tualau was crowned best player on the ground. The Hills’ under 12s were also crowned champion after a successful season in which they also won the minor premiership. The under 14s A and B were knocked out in elimination finals and the under-16 outfit lost in the grand final.

night with games each night up until Saturday. The WNBL tournament begins a night later on Friday and on each night until Sunday. Dandenong Basketball Association chief executive Graeme Allen said the tournaments would be great for Dandenong and for Victorian basketball. ‘‘It’s becoming a regular occurrence to have these major events at Dandenong Stadium,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a great opportunity to see our elite basketball players on court at the same time. ‘‘All the NBL and WNBL clubs will be playing

in one place on the one night. You will have four courts going with plenty of games.’’ Dandenong had originally asked WNBL clubs to come and play their preseason tournament at the stadium before last season, but a weekend when all clubs were available couldn’t be found. This year that changed. For tickets to the preseason tournament, call Dandenong Basketball Association on 9734 7192 or go to dandenongbasketball .com.au for more information. — Roy Ward

Clubs bid to host cricket carnival CASEY and Dandenong’s cricket community have joined forces in an attempt to bring an annual sports event to the region. The joint bid for the 2013 National Over 60s Cricket Carnival was launched in Narre Warren by the presidents of Premier Cricket clubs Dandenong and Casey-South Melbourne and councillors from Casey and Greater Dandenong. The bid has the support of former Australian Test cricketer Paul Sheahan, who is patron of the Victorian Over 60 Cricket Association and president of the Melbourne Cricket Club. Organisers say the carnival would have economic benefits for both municipalities and could draw as many as 500 cricketers. Adelaide will host the 2012 carnival in November.
