CARDINIA Shire and surrounding areas are facing their worst bushfire summer since Black Saturday, experts warn. But many residents have grown complacent, particularly about the danger from grass fires, says Cardinia Shire Council. After delays brought on by wet weather, the council has ramped up its preparations for what it predicts will be, in terms of risk, an above average bushfire season. Country Fire Authority chief officer Euan Ferguson said last week Victorians were facing the first ‘‘real fire season’’ since 2009 and warned that many of those most at risk were still not prepared. "We will have a real fire season this year, unlike the past two years," he told the Age Officer CFA captain Garry Barnes told the Weekly that good growing conditions this year had increased the fire risk across Cardinia Shire and similar areas. “We’ve got a situation now where there are extreme amounts of grass in north Officer — we have a lot of fuel out there and it’s starting to dry out. Towns throughout Cardinia Shire remain among some of Victoria’s most vulnerable to bushfire, with a 2009 list of state’s most dangerous towns naming Gembrook at No. 15 and Cockatoo at 24. Cardinia’s head of emergency management Myles O’Reilly said wet weather had meant fire mitigation measures had been delayed until last month. But work had begun on the council’s 2800 kilo-

I feed many types of birds in my garden, from the non-native ring-necked doves to crimson rosellas, blackbirds, thrushes, rainbow lorikeets, corellas, galahs and Indian mynahs (Weekly, November 21). I did have problems with the latter until I went out to the garden when they started intimidating the doves, waved a finger at them and told them, in no uncertain terms, not to do that! Guess what? I took me about three times of doing this and since then I have had absolutely no problems with them at all. Maybe instead of just deciding to kill them, more people should take into consideration that it is not the birds’ fault they are here and everything should be allowed a chance.

I have used the ‘service’ for the past year usually boarding Thursdays in Lakeside with an estimated time of arrival at the stop of 9am. It has in my experience never arrived on time, the best being 4 minutes past 9 and usually 6 minutes

after 9. The drivers say it is virtually impossible to maintain the schedule when they leave Pakenham station. When the bus lines were run by Grenda they at least had someone answer your queries. The Cardinia Transport Co seems to be infected by what now is the standard ‘no contact’ possible process. Charles Harris , Pakenham

Australian way. We are living in a very peaceful and harmonious society. Instead of walls of hatred being erected we need peace to prevail and for this to occur people of all faiths must join together. It is very important to promote peace, harmony, understanding respect and tolerance for each other’s beliefs, faith and places of worship in the community by living together in peace and goodwill. What has Islam and Muslims to do with ‘race’? There are Pakistani Christians, Hindus and Muslims, just as there are British Christians, Hindus and Muslims. Islam and Muslims have nothing to do with race or ethnicity. Am I now a racist when I criticise certain practices of the Catholic church or Hinduism? It seems we are only smeared as ‘racist’ when we criticise Islam. Where is my choice as ratepayer and taxpayer to not fund Islam-only causes like curtains on public swimming pools or Muslim-only prayer rooms in public hospitals ? Why do we allow this religious apartheid to divide our communities? Raoul Machal (via web)

Green wedge under threat, expert says BY CHAD VAN ESTROP THE Baillieu government is ‘‘pandering’’ to land developers steadily chewing up Melbourne’s vital green wedge land, says planning expert Professor Michael Buxton. Professor Buxton, of RMIT University, said the government seemed powerless to stop the development lobby. Its proposed planning regulations meant schools, medical centres, hotels and other commercial developments could be built on green wedge land in Cardinia and other semi-rural areas. ‘‘The development lobby, individual landowners and key government agencies have unprecedented influence on this government,’’ he said. Cardinia residents took their concerns about creeping incursion into local green wedge land to a rally on the steps of Parliament last Friday. Cardinia Ratepayers Association president Gloria O’Connor said the Government’s logical inclusion policy was just ‘‘weasel words’’ to hide extension of the city’s urban boundaries. Cardinia councillor Graeme Moore said such

He couldn’t be anything but good, for goodness’ sake. And the feeling is mutual. Tyler had his first ever encounter with jolly old Saint Nick at Westfield Fountain Gate, where Santa and his elves have been ensconced and busy for a couple of weeks. But there’s still time to sit on that ample lap — he’ll be there from 9am Monday through Saturday and 10am-4pm on Sundays. creeping development was destroying the rural feeling and character of much of the shire and taking power away from its people. Professor Buxton said the introduction of the logical inclusion policy — adding 6000 hectares to the current urban growth zone earlier this year — was unwarranted. ‘‘There is no logical basis to be including an extra 6000 hectares. No city in the world has that sort of land supply. ‘‘If people aren’t prepared to put a stop to this rampant destruction from government we are going to lose what is most valuable to our city.’’ Ms O’Connor said that under the logical inclusion policy, 600 hectares would be rezoned and earmarked for development east of Pakenham. Ms O’Connor, who moved to Pakenham in 1996, said the landscape was changing before her eyes — ‘‘when I came here Pakenham was a nice semi-rural town’’. Cr Moore said it was extremely difficult to preserve the rural feeling of the shire as developers continued to bank land for development.

Bus fare rise ‘unfair’ BY CHAD VAN ESTROP

Pedal power: Students from St Margaret’s Berwick cheer the senior girls’ vehicle, Ceto, after breaking the girls’ lap record.

St Margaret’s takes out ‘green grand prix’ PEDAL-powered students of St Margaret’s Berwick have taken on — and beaten — more than 6000 others from schools across Victoria in a gruelling but environmentally-friendly 24-hour endurance race. In the 22nd RACV Energy Breakthrough — dubbed Australia’s ‘green grand prix’ — held in Maryborough two weeks ago, Team St Margaret took out the open and all-female prize for human-powered vehicles. In relays, the youngsters pedalled a distance equivalent to a trip from Melbourne to Sydney in a sleek, futuristic vehicle they had designed and

built themselves — and reaching speeds of up to 60km/h. School groups work through the year to design, build and test vehicles or machines within detailed specifications. These groups then take their vehicles and machines to Maryborough to demonstrate and trial them. Fifty-six students from St Margaret’s took part. Team co-ordinator Terry Trevena said another highlight was the open boys group, all in year 10, overcoming year 12 students from other schools. “We didn’t expect them to beat these giants they were up against.” — Chad Van Estrop

Another parent, Debbie Perryman, said some children in suburbs like Narre Warren North would have to catch three types of public transport to get to school. Ashley Gardiner, spokesman for Education Minister Martin Dixon, said the changes were ‘‘long overdue as existing boundaries dated back almost 30 years’’. But Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley said the cuts were a shock to parents. “They will hit low fee, outer urban and regional independent and government schools the hardest.’’

DESPITE a state government backflip, many parents at St Francis Xavier campuses in Casey and Cardinia face almost $1000 in extra bus fares — per student — to get their children to school next year. At the 11th hour, the government last week backtracked on plans to means test transport subsidies that would have resulted in about 38,000 students no longer being eligible for subsidised transport to school. But two of St Francis’ three campuses were now inside new boundaries for the allowance — extending into growth areas like Casey and Cardinia — so most parents would still be ineligible for the subsidy, principal Paul Desmond said. The government needed to continue a ‘‘serious rethink’’ of the scheme because ‘‘they have got it wrong and they are being grossly unfair to families’’. For students travelling by bus, prices are set to rise from $325 to $1300. Some parents, with four children at the school, face increased costs of $4000 a year. ‘‘It’s nearly as much as the school fees and personally I just can’t afford it,’’ said single mother Jenny Cuffe. She said the decision was sudden

Funding pulled from ‘lifeline’ BY DANIEL TRAN SCHOOL principals held an emergency meeting with Casey Council on Friday over the axing of a state-funded school suicide prevention program. The Baillieu government’s move to end the School Focused Youth Service in the middle of next year has also been criticised by Cardinia mayor Brett Owen and slammed by one the nation’s most prominent psychiatrists. Professor Patrick McGorry, who founded the headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation, said the closure was ‘‘irresponsible’’. ‘‘I’m just gobsmacked that the state government would be doing this. It just beggars belief. ‘‘They seem to be cutting in the most critical areas in mental health. The state government is clearly walking away from young people here.’’ The youth service was established in 1998 to reduce the risk of suicide through prevention and early intervention programs. In September, state Mental Health Minister Mary Wooldridge announced $150,000 from headspace funds would be used to appoint a

ation of a forum organised by Casey Council and attended by more than 100 community leaders in response to a cluster of youth suicides in Berwick, Beaconsfield and Narre Warren. Cardinia mayor Brett Owen said the statewide $7.5 million cut was a deep concern as it assists many schools, targeting 10 to 18 year olds. ‘There have been great early intervention programs implemented over the past few years as a result of the school-focused projects. ‘‘The school focused worker has been a great conduit between schools and services which has provided greater outcomes for young people. ‘‘It will be a great loss to Cardinia Shire to no longer have the program after June 2013. ‘‘The cuts are a blow to schools and young people who are already struggling to meet the needs and issues that young people are dealing with every day.’’ Education Minister Martin Dixon said his department was ‘‘developing more effective responses’’ for at-risk youths following the release of the state government’s Protecting Victoria’s Vulnerable Children Inquiry.

Megan Taylor with daughters Maisy and Sunday have fond memories of Danny, their foster son and brother. Open door: Donna and Stephen Crandell have given a permanent home to four foster children.

Picture: Wayne Hawkins

Picture: Rob Carew

Nurturing love, affection BY CATHERINE WATSON and DAVID SCHOUT irst the hard question. It’s the one everyone asks foster carers, or wants to: ‘‘But aren’t you sad when the children leave?’’ Yes, says Megan Taylor. Oh yes! There’s no getting away from that. ‘‘But we’re willing to be hurt for the sake of the child,’’ she says. ‘‘You know you’ve done something good for someone else. ‘‘You have to remember you’re not keeping them — you’re just a caretaker. ‘‘You love them and take care of them but always knowing the goal is that they go back to their own family. When they do that, it’s a success story.’’ Every week, about 60 Victorian children are removed from their homes by the state, but there is a chronic shortage of foster carers, both short term and long term. Figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show Victoria had fewer than 1000 foster households compared with more than 3500 in NSW. These days, carers are married, de facto or single; home owners or renters; workers or not. Some have biological children living in the home, some have adult children who have moved out and others have no children. The key requirement is the ability to provide a safe, stable and nurturing home for a child or young person — but a sense of humour, patience and enjoyment of children’s company also help. Cranbourne’s Donna and Stephen Crandell have four long-term foster children through Ozchild. Donna says she feels blessed to be in a position to provide care, and encourages others to give it a try. ‘‘I felt I should be contributing more to the

Two families speak about the joys and challenges of sharing their homes with children in their hour of need. community and my situation gave me the opportunity to do so. When a teenager turns up at your door with a child in their hands, you realise there is a real need out there for foster carers.’’ Megan Taylor had always been interested in fostering but put it off until her youngest child, Fletcher, was out of nappies. Most parents would have considered Fletcher and his older sisters, Lili, 14, Maisy, 8, and Sunday, 6, added up to a full house, but about 18 months ago Megan and her husband Anthony decided there was room for one more in their Sandhurst home. After extensive interviews and several training days with MacKillop Family Services, they were declared fit and proper carers. Two weeks later three-month-old Flynn* arrived. ‘‘There’s a ring at the door, they hand you this baby and off they go,’’ says Megan, a former teacher. ‘‘You’re sitting there with this baby and he’s smiling at you. They become part of your family so quickly. I couldn’t believe you could become attached so quickly.’’ In retrospect, she says, probably too attached. ‘‘We were a bit broken-hearted when he left after a month. I think you get better at that as you go along. In fostering, things can change very quickly.’’ Two weeks after Flynn left, MacKillop rang to say they had a 10-month baby needing a home and Danny* arrived. ‘‘Our children were all excited,’’ Megan says. ‘‘Being girls, they wanted babies. The two

younger girls were lovely with him. Fletcher too — it was good for him. He’s just been diagnosed with Aspergers so it was good for him to get used to people coming and learning to accommodate a younger child. He still calls him ‘my little brother’. ‘‘It’s been good for all the children. One of my own reasons for going in was to try to help them understand about social justice and to explain how some children end up in foster care. ‘‘They all accepted him so quickly, and he loved the kids. I thought he’d be really attached to me as I was the main carer but he was more attached to the kids and to Anthony. When Anthony came home from work he’d run up the hall saying, ‘Dadda, dadda!’’’ It was nice for Anthony as well, she says. ‘‘At first he was just supporting me but you can’t help falling in love with a baby. He was a bit devastated after Danny went back.’’ They cared for Danny for 10 months before he returned to live with his mother in October. Megan says the experience was better than the first time around because she had had more contact with Danny’s mother. ‘‘We met a couple of times and I’d write little notes about how he was going. He had continued contact with his mother — it built up to twice a week as her circumstances improved. ‘‘There was not a lot of emotion when he first arrived, but as the attachment with his mother improved, he would get very excited when he

knew she was coming to pick him up.’’ She has several photos of Danny but there’s one in particular she treasures. It was taken during a game of hide-and-seek with the other kids. Danny is peeking out of a kitchen cupboard, grinning with delight. It might look like an everyday family photo but it shows how far Danny had come in just a few months. When he arrived, he rarely smiled or played but, surrounded by other children, he became one of them. As his confidence and happiness grew, so did his relationship with his mother. The Taylors are having a break from fostering now and next year plan to offer short-term emergency care. Anthony Taylor says fostering has also been good for their own family. ‘‘I think our children got as much out of it as Danny. Normally, it’s ‘me, me, me’ so it’s nice to have a little baby around the place. They’d be on the monkey bars playing with him. Since he’s gone they’re a bit more back into ‘What’s for Christmas?’’’ He says there’s not much difference between having four or five children. ‘‘You don’t really notice one more child chuffing around the house. What struck me was that it was minimum effort for a really big result.’’ *Not the real name

INBRIEF Schoolgirl escapes abduction bid Sexual crimes squad detectives are investigating an attempted abduction in Pakenham on Friday. Police have been told a 10-year-old girl was riding her scooter south on Riviera Drive on her way to school about 8.30am when she was approached by a man. Police said the man enticed the schoolgirl to the rear of his orange or red-coloured station wagon. As the girl approached the car boot, the man grabbed her under the arms and lifted her into the vehicle. The quick-thinking victim jumped over the back seats and ran out of the back door, hiding in a garden before raising the alarm. The man police wish to speak to is described as aged in his late 20s, with a thin build, olive complexion and short dark hair. Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit crimestoppers.com.au.

School for blind to open

é f a C Parties Functions

A four-year campaign for a school for the blind will culminate early next year when the first pupils take their place at the Insight Specialist Primary School in Berwick. The primary school is the first stage of the Insight Education Centre for the Blind and Vision Impaired, which will be built at Monash University’s Berwick campus. Education Minister Martin Dixon turns the first sod on the site today. A Pearcedale couple, Alan

and Maria Franca Lachman, whose daughter is blind, drove the campaign for the school after Victoria’s only school for the blind closed in 2008. Beaconhills College will host the primary school unit until the specialist primary school opens in April next year.

Death stops trains Services were suspended on the Pakenham line after a person was hit by a train about 4.45pm on Sunday. Buses replaced trains between Dandenong and Berwick stations. Passengers stuck on the six-carriage train had to be helped back to Narre Warren station. Victoria Police said the death was not suspicious.

More parking at Narre Warren Work has finished on an extension to the car park at Narre Warren railway station, providing an extra 138 spaces. Parliamentary Secretary for Transport and Eastern Victoria MP Edward O’Donohue said the extension meant Narre Warren now had one of the biggest railway car parks on the network. “These works provide a big boost to commuters in Melbourne’s southeast and lifts the number of car spaces at the station to almost 700,” he said. Completed works included improved lighting, increased CCTV coverage and landscaping. And in a boon for bikers, a new Parkiteer bike cage had also been installed.

HOT SUMMER SAVINGS ON MOWERS, WHIPPER SNIPPERS AND BLOWERS AT THE RED SHED The Red Shed offers professional and friendly advice, product demonstrations and a best price guarantee!

SOME 20 years ago, Ken Barnes read a newspaper article about a bunch of old jokers who built wooden toys for kids for Christmas. ‘‘I thought I’d like to do that some day,’’ he said. So about five years ago, when he retired, he joined the Berwick District Woodworkers Club. On Sunday, he and other members of the club distributed more than 700 hand-made toys, including cars, trucks and hookey boards, from their home at the Old Cheese Factory. The group has made almost 8000 toys over its 25 years. This year, the toys went to the Four Cs in Pakenham, the Windermere Group, the Migrant Resource Centre in Dandenong, the Cranbourne and Narre Warren information and support services, which will distribute them to disadvantaged children. Mr Barnes said he was inspired by the thought of the joy on the face of a child when they get a toy for Christmas.

Style added to substance Alistair Kennedy reviews the exciting new Hyundai Santa Fe he Santa Fe is the larger of the two models in Hyundai’s SUV range. Until recently it suffered in comparison – both in terms of sales and looks – with its stunning looking smaller sibling, the ix35. With the release of the latest model, Santa Fe no longer needs to hide behind its cute little brother. As well as the new styling, the third generation Santa Fe, launched here in September, is longer and wider than its predecessor and now comes with seven seats as standard across the range. Previous Santa Fe models only offered the extra pair of seats as an option. The combination of attractive looks, functional design and flexible interior space seems sure to appeal to the typical suburban family buyer. Although larger in other dimensions, third generation Santa Fe sits lower to the ground than before, not only making it more convenient for its occupants but also improving its aerodynamics and so fuel efficiency. The lesser ground clearance means the latest

T

Santa Fe won’t be as good in off-road conditions, but few buyers of SUVs are actually looking for an SUV these days. The Santa Fe’s designers’ handiwork didn’t stop on the outside of the new model. Inside, the styling is just as exciting. Controls are conveniently large and well-placed. Interior space is sensibly arranged, there is plenty of head and leg room in the front and centre seats. Importantly, the third row of seats folds flat to provide plenty of storage space when in five-seat mode. Indeed even with all seven seats in place there’s still at least 506 litres available. With both rows of rear seats folded (the centre row not quite flat) Santa Fe can be used as a quasi van with capacity up to 1615 litres. New Santa Fe comes in three model variants, Active, Elite and Highlander. New Santa Fe has that solid, quality feel to its body that we expect from prestige European vehicles and will prove a real plus for those intending to work their Santa Fe hard and keep it for a long time.

I Am on the money.

Attractive and functional: Styling of the latest Hyundai Santa Fe takes centre stage. Off-road Santa Fe’s better than average for its class and can cope with harsher conditions than those likely to be demanded by the typical owner. It really is a 4WD, not simply an SUV. But don’t mistake if for a full house off-roader or you may get yourself into stuck in awkward areas. Hyundai’s climb up the automotive ladder started with value for money, then stepped up

with a steady improvement in quality. Now style is paramount in the latest batch of models that have arrived in the past few years. The latest Santa Fe is just another example and shows with its fluid styling that the days of the bland and boxy 4WDs and SUVs are over. Prices start at $36,990, not including government or dealer delivery charges.

Brilliant Boxster close to perfection Ewan Kennedy road tests Porsche’s new-generation pure-bred he third generation Porsche Boxster, tagged the 981, takes the same styling route as its predecessors, which is no bad thing. Porsche owners over the years have shown strong resentment to any major changes in direction, so features like the air intakes in front of the rear wheels and the shape of the bonnet and headlights follow a familiar theme. At the tail there’s more change in the design, with a strong style line that runs the full width, with the tail lights following the horizontal shape of the metal. New Boxster is bigger than before and would have weighed substantially more, but more aluminium has been used than ever before with the bonnet, rear deck and door skins all benefiting from the lightweight material. The mass of the Boxster has been trimmed by 25 to 35 kilograms, depending on model. It all helps in improving straight-line performance, providing nimbleness and reducing emissions and fuel use. You can choose between a standard Boxster at

T

a modest starting price for this class of just $107,500 or the high-performance Boxster S with a recommended retail price of $133,800. The standard variant uses a new-design 2.7-litre flat-six power plant with direct fuel injection in place of the manifold injection 2.9-litre of the previous model. Choosing the Porsche Boxster S puts a revised version of the well-established 3.4-litre flat-six just behind your back. Transmission options are six-speed manual and seven-speed double-clutch PDK automatic. We have just stepped out of a Boxster S automatic after a most enjoyable week of smileinducing driving. On the road, the latest Porsche Boxster is close to perfect in its balance and nimble handling. The Boxster hangs on to the road at speeds well in excess of those achievable by anything other than an ultra-expensive supercar. The new-generation Porsche Boxster provides a pure-bred machine for what is a very modest price for the class in which it operates.

New but familiar styling: the latest Porsche Boxster is a superb driving machine.

Retooled Scorps set to name new coach BY BRAD McGRATH CASEY Scorpions are expected to make an announcement on their senior coaching position this week, The troubled VFL club was doing a second round of interviews with candidates late last week, with football manager Matthew Young confirming an appointment was imminent. ‘‘We are doing second interviews at the moment,’’ he said. ‘‘We’re hopeful of naming the coach very soon.’’ The Scorpions’ alignment with Melbourne will continue next season, with several coaching candidates believed to be at the Demons. Young said pre-season training was under way with ex-North Melbourne rookie Ben Hughes, Cranbourne ruckman Michael Boland and six Gippsland Power graduates among the new faces. He confirmed that Rian McGough, Dave Collins and Dean Cleven had all departed the club. Cleven has joined Eastern Football

League powerhouse Noble Park while McGough has joined exScorpions James Wall and Ben Waite at Goulburn Valley League club Tatura. Collins will play with a local club after work commitments meant he could not commit to another VFL season. ‘‘Our list is pretty good and we’ve done a fair bit of recruiting,’’ Young said. The Scorpions will go into their opening match next season with a significantly different team than the one that took them to the minor premiership this year. The Demons’ savage list cuts mean Matthew Bate, Jamie Bennell, Lucas Cook, Liam Jurrah, Ricky Petterd, Jai Sheahan and Leigh Williams have been moved on. Clint Bartram, Brad Green and Kelvin Lawrence have all retired while Stefan Martin and Brent Maloney have moved to Brisbane and Jared Rivers joined Geelong as a free agent.

Moving on: Dean Cleven has moved to EFL club Noble Park for season 2013.

Berwick and Narre Warren in nail-biter BY ROY WARD NARRE Warren and Berwick sit on a knife edge after the first day of play in their DDCA Turf 1 clash at Arch Brown Reserve. After bowling out Berwick for 188 and having 30 overs left to bat, the Magpies set themselves to keep hold of their wickets so they could launch an all-out attack on the second day. That plan almost came to pass except for a diving, full-length catch from Bears West Indian import Ryan Hercules late in the day to dismiss Dushan Wickramaratne and leave the visitors on 4-64 at stumps. Ateeq Javid and James Giertz are at the crease for the Magpies. Magpies captain Wendell Perumal said the first hour of play this Saturday would be huge in deciding who wins the game. ‘‘All DDCA decks do a little in the first hour of play so if Giertz and Javid see out that first hour, play it like opening batsmen, then it will go a long way towards winning the match,’’ he said. ‘‘If one of them goes out and exposes our lower order it will get harder. ‘‘The game is really 50-50 at this stage, we need about 125 runs from 80 overs and we don’t care how long it takes to make them. ‘‘It’s up to us. If we bat well we will win it.’’ Perumal said Hercules’ catch could come back to haunt his side but he remained confident in his batsmen to do the job. ‘‘If we go in three down and with Wickramaratne at the crease, I think you would say we are in front,’’ he said. ‘‘If they do win the match I think they will look back at that catch and say it was the turning point.’’ Earlier in the day, Berwick middle-order batsman Bart Perera (80) was the rock of the Bears’ innings, holding strong for the majority of the innings before being dismissed by Wickramaratne (5-29). Perumal said the Magpies had worked on getting the other batsmen out as Perera was proving difficult to dislodge. Springvale South is within reach of a vital outright win after tearing through the North

Dandenong top order on Saturday. The Bloods won the toss at Alex Nelson Reserve and sent the visitors in to bat. That decision proved a wise one with North Dandenong falling to 5-11 and never recovering as the Bloods bowled them out for 40 in 20.4 overs. Bloods spearhead Tim Ford (5-15) was the chief destroyer while opening partner Jarrod Armitage (2-20) and Damian Stoter-Rainer (3-3) also did plenty of damage. In response, the Bloods spent 40 overs at the crease making 7-208, with Sri Lankan import Jeevantha Kulatunga (64 off 59 balls) showing some good touch, as did Jackson Sketcher (51). The Bloods declared, leaving two overs to get a late wicket, but North Dandenong openers Scott Neeson and Shane Clark held strong to end play on 0-4. They need to bat for most of day two to avoid an outright loss which would help the Bloods back within reach of the top four after some disappointments in the opening few rounds. Coomoora has put itself in prime position to upset an in-form Mordialloc after posting a challenging 7-238 from its 80 overs at Coomoora Reserve on Saturday. After struggling to 2-31 Jake D’Atri (62) and captain-coach Paul Hill (50) put on 67 for the third wicket before Hill and Rob Johnston (58) added 68 for the fourth wicket to get their side within reach of a good score. The Roos put together a couple of small partnerships in the final session to get to 238, a score which will trouble Mordialloc on day 2. Heinz Southern Districts will need early wickets when play resumes on day 2 of its clash with top side Dandenong West. HSD was bowled out for 163 with vital runs coming from Justin Davis (56) and Trevor Davis (51) at the bottom of the order. Alex Roberts took five wickets for the Bulls. In response, the Bulls are 2-48 at stumps with David Weerden and Roberts at the crease. Hallam Kalora Park faces a tough ask to beat in-form Buckley Ridges after being bowled out for 144 on Saturday. Hallam opener Rhys

Forward defence: Berwick’s Darren de Souza reaches forward to defend a delivery against Narre Warren on Saturday. Picture: Sam Stiglec Serpanchy (44) was the best of the batsmen as Buckley Ridges’ opening bowler Jeremy Kuru took 6-37. The Ridges are 0-21 heading into day 2. Parkfield has a narrow advantage after the first day of its clash with out-of-form Doveton at Robinson Reserve. Parkfield bowled the Doves out for 119 after the home side won the toss and batted first. Former Premier Cricket left-arm bowler Rodney Bird led the way for Parkfield, taking 3-43 while Shane Bell (2-23) and Travis D’souza

(2-28) were also troublesome. But Parkfield could not consolidate its position, losing two wickets to be 2-21 at stumps with David Ford and captain-coach Steve Spoljaric at the crease. ■ The DDCA will replay its round three matches from its Twenty20 competition on Wednesday night after work on turf pitches forced the matches to be cancelled last week. All round three matches will be replayed except for Buckley Ridges v Keysborough, which will be played tonight.

English import gradually finding his feet JUST like his Casey-South Melbourne team, import bowler Richard Jones wants to make plenty of improvements this Premier Cricket season. The 26 year old, who plays English county cricket for Worcestershire, made his way out to Casey Fields on the advice of former county teammate Damien Wright, with a view to working on his bowling action and getting an extra summer of cricket into his year. ‘‘I came over with the plan of making a few slight alterations to my action,’’ he said. ‘‘I’ve been working on those at training and in matches.

‘‘Damien works with me as well when he has time and I feel like I have made good progress after a slow start.’’ Jones had had a modest start with the ball, taking five wickets at 52 from seven matches, but as he comes to grips with Australian conditions and becomes more comfortable with his new side he expects those numbers to improve. At first-class level Jones has taken 126 wickets at 31. ‘‘It’s improving week in, week out and my pace is up where it should be.’’ Jones said this summer was his second in Australia after playing in Perth five years ago. But he hasn’t been happy with his form or the

form of his side after some tough losses in the first half of the Premier Cricket season. ‘‘We have played against some good players with state experience so far this season so we have had some difficult challenges.’’ Jones added that Swans captain Jake Best had told his struggling batsmen to use the Premier Cricket Twenty20 matches as a way to ‘‘free themselves up’’ after several weeks of low returns. ‘‘Jake saw these Twenty20 matches as a chance for the batters to play with more freedom. ‘‘So far we’ve posted some good totals and defended them well so hopefully the batters can continue making scores and tak

e that form into the two-day matches.’’ The Swans also got some help from a highprofile import on Saturday when Melbourne Stars and English international Luke Wright played for the club in a one-off match in preparation for the Big Bash competition. Wright made 49 off 34 balls as the Swans chased down Northcote’s total of 5-126 with two balls to spare, finishing on 7-127 from 19.4 overs. Clive Rose was 25 not out from 24 balls. The Swans added another win beating Richmond by two runs on Sunday with the team making 4-129 from their 20 overs then keeping the Tigers to 4-127 from 20 overs.
