Crippling rate rises hit residents sue.hewitt@fairfaxmedia.com.au

RESIDENTS of the sleepy hamlet of Wollert have been hit with crippling rate rises and individual bills as high as $33,000. The mostly hobby farmers claim rates have risen between 40 per cent and a whopping 260 per cent because their land has been rezoned residential. The locals say housing development is decades off and the holding costs will send them bankrupt. Even if they want to sell, they say there is a surplus of residential land and no buyers. To complicate matters, they said, some properties are earmarked for the E6 freeway development, making it difficult to sell. The state government earmarked the properties for urban growth in 2010 and this is the first year they have been valued as residential. Tom Kozaris, who organised a ratepayers’ meeting last week, said he and his wife, Mary, moved to the area 25 years ago to live and not to develop the land. ‘‘I’ve got 10 hectares and a house and have had it for 25 years; it’s where the kids grew up,’’ Mr Kozaris said. His rates jumped more than 125 per cent from $3351 to $8012. He said another property’s rates rose about 260 per cent, from $3186 to $11,544. ‘‘There are no services here; no major developer is going to come,’’ he said. ‘‘We can’t afford to keep the place and we can’t sell it either.’’ A resident who did not want to be named said the rates on his two land holdings went from $8000 to $24,000, a 200 per cent increase.

‘‘There’s no infrastructure. People could be waiting 20 or 30 years [for developers] and each year the rates will go up before there is a need for this land [for housing],’’ he said. Gino Mitrione, Whittlesea council’s manager of property and valuation services, said the state government required the council to rezone 230 properties in Wollert, Beveridge, Donnybrook and Woodstock as urban growth zone with some farming. He said the council warned affected ratepayers in May that property values had increased ‘‘substantially’’. “Prior to the rezoning, values of the properties ranged from

Resident Mary Kozaris with her rate bills, which show the dramatic increase

$500,000 to $9 million with the average valuation of approximately $1.4 million and a rate amount of around $4300,’’ Mr Mitrione said. ‘‘Now property values range from $500,000 to $15 million with the average valuation approximately $2 million and a rate amount of around $6500.’’ Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green

said there was already an oversupply of residential land. ‘‘Long-standing residents and new residents are being hit with exorbitant rates, as high as $33,000 for one ratepayer. They will be sent bankrupt.’’ Buyers advocate Christopher Koren said the hike was a ‘‘scandal’’. ‘‘They are not living in Beverly Hills, we’re talking about ordinary people who chose to live there years ago because they could afford to. Then the city creeps up next to them and they are paying Toorak rates.’’ Ratepayers have until October 12 to object to the rate increase.

was born in the front bedroom of our family home in Walnut Street, Whittlesea, and have lived here all my life. When I left school at 14 and started my butcher’s apprenticeship, I used to catch the train from Whittlesea, change at Thomastown and go to work in North Carlton, leaving at 5.45am and getting home at 7pm. The train is long gone and many things have changed in the town but the Whittlesea Bowls Club still has the same sense of community it started with when it opened in 1955. I joined in 1976 when my doctor said I was getting too old, at 48, for tennis. I’m still a life member of the Whittlesea Tennis Club and the local football and bowls club. Tennis was fast and competitive – bowls is very competitive, too. In the late 1970s and 1980s I won four club singles titles. With

my (late) brother Alan and John Turner we won the Victorian metropolitan triples twice in the 1980s and the Victorian country masters triples at Benalla in the 1980s. But it is not about winning. As long as you can bowl, you can enjoy yourself. Our club is a terrific community with 180 bowls members and countless social members, and the club is a free meeting place for 20 organisations – like the Lions, Rotary, Probus and RSL clubs. My wife, Shirley, was a national bowls umpire. She passed away in June last year. This club is wonderful for widows and widowers; you feel like you’re part of the family. And it’s not just for seniors, we have a lot of school kids come here to learn. As a club we did well in the pennant competition last year, so this year we are fielding six sides of 16 players each – that’s four teams of four – in division two, three, five and eight, and two more in divison seven. At the moment I have been practising for the third side, but the team I play in depends on my form. As long as I get a game, I’ll be happy. ■ The Victorian Metropolitan Pennant season starts on October 6

RAQUEL Deralas doesn’t think she is bending the rules to reach her goal. But, like the lead character in hit movie Bend It Like Beckham, she has her heart set on professional soccer. The 10-year-old Plenty Parklands Primary School student has some impressive scores. She was the only girl in her school team, the Bushrangers, which recently won the state championship in the School Sport Victoria primary school boys/mixed division for the second year in a row. She also played in the primary school girls Victorian team, which came fourth at a recent national competition in Darwin. ‘‘I like it, soccer is interesting,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s exciting to play, fun and gives me a challenge.’’ Her mother, Angie, said Raquel looked to her brother Peter, 13, (pictured with Raquel) for inspiration. He played in Spain’s Donosti Cup, where 392 teams from 28 nations competed. Raquel was goalkeeper.

THE Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE has proposed staff cuts, fee hikes, selling land and a merger with La Trobe University as part of its survival plans. A leaked document reveals NMIT is struggling with debt and predicts a ‘‘significant’’ deficit of $8.9 million in 2013, but expects to break even in 2014. NMIT and others hit by the government’s $290 million TAFE cuts provided confidential survival plans to the government. The institute, with campuses and training centres in Epping, Eden Park and Yan Yean, revealed it wanted $12 million from state and federal governments to transform itself into a polytechnic university offering careerfocused programs as a stand-alone facility or as a wholly owned subsidiary of La Trobe University, according

to the document. NMIT said it had started talks to merge with La Trobe University as an independent corporate entity controlled by La Trobe. ‘‘NMIT would have its own board and would hold its own assets – similar to a Qantas/Jetstar model,’’ the institute said in its submission. The document stated it would tap into La Trobe’s student places to provide higher education programs. Staff would be cut by 100 over the next 18 months and the face-to-face workload would almost double. Although NMIT planned to keep most campuses, it proposed selling its Ararat campus and land in Jessie Street, Preston. Fees were proposed to rise by an average of 50 per cent. The institute wanted to pick up programs dropped by other TAFES and grow its delivery of programs in Asia. Neither NMIT nor La Trobe would comment.

A LITTLE girl who touched the hearts of Kinglake residents has lost her long battle with a congenital heart defect. Flyers urging people to help Phoebe Rolando and her family were still posted in stores in the township as the sad news filtered through the mountain community. The three-year-old had spent months in hospital and passed away peacefully at the Royal Children’s Hospital with parents Julia and Anthony at her side on September 12. A funeral was held yesterday at the Heritage Funeral Home in Lilydale. Her mother said on Facebook: ‘‘It will be a celebration of the life of a beautiful little girl I was honoured to call my daughter.’’ Phoebe, nicknamed Cheeky, was born less than a fortnight after Black Saturday when Anthony and Julia, who was then eight-and-a-halfmonths pregnant, raced down the mountain to escape the flames. Within hours, doctors diagnosed Phoebe with

a congenital heart defect. She underwent the first of numerous operations when she was five days old. Her parents were told that the babies in intensive care were naked because the ‘‘spaghetti wire’’ of tubes and intravenous lines meant they couldn’t wear conventional clothes. When Phoebe was about a year old, the Rolandos invented a ‘‘healing suit’’ with openings for cords and tubes, and plastic studs safe for use in X-rays and other scans so babies around the world could be warm and secure while in intensive care. But Phoebe’s battle continued. This year her Kinglake playgroup started fund-raising because, according to flyers, her parents were unable to work while they were caring for her. Friends said Phoebe had sung and danced her way into their hearts, while strangers were moved by her death. One said ‘‘my heart broke a thousand times’’. – Sue Hewitt

BY SUE HEWITT MERV Williamson is the last of his ‘‘tribe’’ in Whittlesea. His clan once numbered in the hundreds and roamed the paddocks in the foothills of the Kinglake ranges. Now, at 76, Mr Williamson is the last dairy cattle farmer in Whittlesea. ‘‘My wife Mary’s family, the Cockrofts, settled the area 100 years ago,’’ he said. ‘‘When we took over their farm in 1959, there were hundreds and hundreds of dairy farmers from Epping all the way up to Whittlesea and through places like Donnybrook and Arthurs Creek. ‘‘There used to be a dairy farm where La Trobe University is [in Bundoora], but they are all gone now.’’ He said dairy farming got tough and many closed their farms and sold to developers. Mr Williamson, the animal nursery superintendent at the Whittlesea Agricultural Society’s Show in November, said the changing face of

Mr Williamson said he had no plans of retiring, milking morning and night to supply milk used by a cheese factory in Thomastown. ‘‘I don’t do it by hand. I couldn’t. One cow produces 40 litres of milk a day,’’ he said. He said his son would not take over the family property because he had moved almost 200km north to farm in Waaia near Nathalia, and his daughter was a teacher in Shepparton. Although dairy farming had almost disappeared from Whittlesea, the agricultural show is still strong, he said. It was a way to show the ‘‘city folk’’ who had moved to new housing estates in Whittlesea about the area’s rural communities. ‘‘Most kids don’t know where milk comes from – and their parents aren’t that much better.’’ The Whittlesea Show is on November 3-4 from 9am to 5pm at the Whittlesea Showgrounds, Yea Road, Whittlesea.

Little Phoebe loses her long battle

Caught in the act The decision to suspend a fishing supertrawler’s activities is well made but not just on the stated grounds of potential environmental outcomes. For many people the idea that we would hunt and kill millions of tonnes of additional fish just because we develop the technological capacity to do so is, increasingly, repellent. Minister for Trade and Competitiveness Craig Emerson recently acknowledged the animal rights movement as being the sixth great rights movement: “it is no more wacky than the women’s liberation of the late 1960s sounded to the male establishment back then”. Lawrence Pope / Victorian Advocates for Animals

Half the human race Tanya Plibersek is right: Tony Abbott has a problem with women, as evidenced by his disrespect for the Prime Minister and fellow student political rivals. One of his first actions when he became health minister

in the Howard government was to launch a campaign against abortion, in which a fellow Catholic, Senator Eric Abetz, led the charge and fired the first shot. I remember Abbott saying then that too many women have abortions purely for their own ‘‘convenience’’. With so many practising Catholics in the Coalition I worry that after the next election, it will seem as though B.A. Santamaria’s old DLP/NCC cabal is running the country. Can we expect Cardinal George Pell to be appointed Governor-General?

Julia Zemiro and Aleisha McCormack share a friendship and a one-life-to-live philosophy. By Fran Cusworth

I

t’s a breezy spring day in the back streets of Fitzroy and RocKwiz host Julia Zemiro is goofing around with comedian Aleisha McCormack. ‘‘She’s the daughter I’ll never have,’’ says Zemiro, pinching McCormack’s cheeks and touching up her friend’s lippy with her finger, in a break during out footpath photoshoot. ‘‘I looked mental in that one,’’ McCormack tells her. ‘‘I made crazy eyes.’’ ‘‘Don’t make crazy eyes,’’ chides Zemiro. ‘‘That’s the one they’ll use.’’ But then they pull more silly faces for the camera and crack up laughing. This pair who live near one another in the inner north are bound by a shared industry and a love of ‘‘the funny’’, regularly walking the few blocks between houses for a coffee, a meal or a laugh. It’s a friendship that’s shrugged off a 13-year age gap – Zemiro is 45 and McCormack is 32 – since they met six years ago working in commercial radio. Now in the throes of a demanding three-month national tour of RocKwiz Live, Zemiro is juggling her role as beloved host of the music quiz show with directing McCormack’s one-woman show, How to Get Rich, part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival. It’s based on McCormack’s real-life experience of flying to London to meet her cybercrush, Richard, in the flesh, and sees her spending the entire flight liberating her mind from its customary optimism to canvass all the things that could go wrong. Could he have a secret girlfriend? A whole family? You don’t even know if he has legs, pointed out McCormack’s aunt. (Which would be fine, McCormack hastily adds. Just fine.) Or maybe he’ll smell funny. Almost as interesting as the story of a cyber romance is that of the friendship between these two women, struck up in Sydney when they would volunteer to get the coffees for the male-heavy staff at the radio studio where they worked – Zemiro as co-host and McCormack as assistant producer – “so we could have a bit of a whinge and a bit of a chat”, says Zemiro.

McCormack had just been dumped at the altar after an eight-year relationship and was “at a bit of a crossroads”, says Zemiro. “I said if you ever come to Melbourne, I could introduce you to a few people, help you out.” McCormack did come to Melbourne, sleeping on Zemiro’s couch and making the national finals of open mic comedy competition Raw Comedy with a piece based on her dumping story (the ex was in the audience and appalled, she says). She went on to work with Glenn Robbins, Steve Vizard, The 7pm Project and, most recently, as an on-air reporter with The Circle, where she brought her cheery, I’ll-try-anything persona to a range of interviews and events, until the show was axed earlier this year. Zemiro knew of her friend’s online affair and applauded McCormack’s courage in taking the trip to meet cyber-boy in the flesh. “She really put herself out there,’’ she says. ‘‘I loved working on this show because I think everyone should have this romantic moment in their lives where they do something as bold as going halfway across the world to find someone,” she says. “One life to live. Why not?” For herself, Zemiro claims to know nothing about love, despite having experienced it, and frequently being the recipient of it. (A woman approaches us during our cover shoot on a footpath to tell Zemiro her husband is in love with her. ‘‘Oh, how awkward!’’ Zemiro hoots sympathetically, saying later, bemused, that it happens all the time. ‘‘I get all these women asking for photos of me with their husbands.’’) If she were a man, you might describe her as one of Melbourne’s most eligible bachelors; attractive and successful, vivacious but strong. But of true love, she says she knows only ‘‘that it’s a moveable force and it doesn’t always stay the same and it can be hard to find it unconditionally”. McCormack says she hesitated before asking Zemiro to direct the show. “I didn’t want her to feel obliged to do it because we were mates. But she was really excited.”

Each grew up as an only child, and they share an exuberant resilience. “She’s very warm and gracious and hilarious,” says McCormack of Zemiro. “She’s someone I can turn to for advice, be it career or relationships. We can be quite silly together. We had to do serious time during the show, and pretend we’re professionals and do work. Which took a bit of control. “My mum died five years ago and I didn’t have a close relationship with her. I tell Julia she’s like the mother I never had, ‘without sounding like a wanker’. She’ll say, ‘You sound like a wanker’. But I mean it.” McCormack says she went to 16 schools as a child, and without siblings she had to work hard to make friends. “I’m a fast friend-maker. It’s been a big bonus in my life. I was class clown, the idiot new girl, the extroverted weirdo. I’ve never been a victim, and you make what you make of those situations.” Zemiro points out she’s not technically old enough to be McCormack’s mother, but admits “she brings out the protective person in me”. “She’s very self-sufficient,’’ says Zemiro. ‘‘You give her an opportunity and she just runs with it. I love her energy. I’m 45 and she’s 32 and sometimes when I’m feeling a bit energyless and I see Aleisha, it’s like plugging into a big voltage plant and I get this little surge of energy. “That’s why you should hang out with different people of different ages. I might have some old-

fashioned wisdom to impart, but Aleisha knows what’s going on with technology and stuff in the real world.” They share a ‘‘life is short, take the risk’’ philosophy that each expresses separately. “You take whatever adventure emerges,” says McCormack. Zemiro repeats this credo often in explanations of herself. Now in her eighth year as host of SBS’s enduring cult hit RocKwiz, she was drawn to direct McCormack’s show because she had never done such a thing before; she is visiting Romania later this year to spend four weeks as a volunteer teacher, living with a local family; she agreed to play a French-speaking role in Rachel Ward’s upcoming telemovie, An Accidental Soldier, because it was a challenge. “I like to work with people who know more than me,” says Zemiro. “With the film, I feel a little out of my depth. I turn up to work nervous and excited and that’s what you want. You want to be going, ‘Ooh, that’s a bit scary, a bit of a challenge’. So I said yes to that in a heartbeat.”

Fluent in French, Zemiro has commentated SBS’ broadcast of Eurovision for the past four years, a gig that indulges her love of languages. “I’ll always say yes to Eurovision because I get to spend two weeks in an environment where I hear at least 40 different languages every day, and I love it.” She doesn’t use social media professionally, and is typically forthright about its shortfalls after the saga of TV personality Charlotte Dawson, who endured a vicious bullying campaign on Twitter. “I’d rather not be part of it, and then it can’t happen to me,” she says, pointing out that her lack of interest in Twitter has not affected her ability to get work. “There’s this idea that your fans can get close to you on Twitter and, to be honest, I don’t really want them to. I do the work and that can stand for itself. I’ve turned down a lot of these covers where you tell people your best chocolate cake recipe. You can be in the public eye too much. I mean, I can see the social experiment of Twitter and Facebook. But really, there’s too many good books to read.” Does she ever worry the performing work could dry up? “I do think about it. I would like to go back to uni and get a teaching degree, just so I’ve got it. So when I’m 60 and work is losing interest for me, or I’m not getting the roles, I’ll have something else to do that I know I’d enjoy. “What’s the worst thing that can happen? Well, it might not work out and it might be a disappointment, and that’s life. You’ve got to grab life by the throat and go for it.” ■ How to Get Rich, October 2-7, Trades Hall Annexe, corner Lygon and Victoria streets, Carlton. Tickets $22 (concession $18). The fundraising event is has been dubbed A Touch of Purple, a nod to Lachmund’s new favourite colour. “We lost our mum to lung cancer three years ago and we all wore purple to her funeral, so it’s a significant colour,” Fitzsimmonds says. It was during this struggle that Fitzsimmonds realised how special her sister was. “We looked after our mum at home and Michelle was the one who took time off work and kept us all together,” she says. Together with a three-course meal and music performed by band The Real Thing, the evening will include a number of auctions and raffles, with donations coming from local sponsors and big businesses, including jumpers from AFL clubs and passes to attend the set of Neighbours during filming. “I still can’t believe it,” Lachmund says of the outreach. “I wonder why I deserve it; it’s a pride thing, I think.”

Her advice to others is to “always follow your gut’’. ‘‘That’s how I felt when I thought that there was something wrong,” she says. “It wasn’t even a lump and we’ve never seen

ichelle Lachmund has always been considered a tower of strength by her nearest and dearest, helping those around her during the darkest of times. Now friends and family are returning the support, as the South Morang mother of two fights melanoma. “She means everything to us,” says Lachmund’s younger sister, Angela Fitzsimmonds. “She’s spent so many years helping all of us, it’s a shame that it’s taken this for us to be able to say, ‘Let us help you’.” Lachmund, 49, discovered a raised area on her shoulder in November, last year. Biopsies revealed she was in the fourth stages of melanoma and in March this year scans revealed that the cancer had spread to Lachmund’s brain. She stopped work as a medical administration clerk and after countless rounds of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery, she is awaiting more surgery to remove a third tumour from her brain. ★★★★ MERIVEL: A MAN OF HIS TIME

Australian director Cate Shortland brings a harrowing Holocaust story to life. By Michael Harry ★★★★ LORE (MA15+) When: In cinemas now Where: On limited release

t’s been eight years since Australian director Cate Shortland’s knockout debut Somersault, which launched the career of Abbie Cornish and starred a pre-Avatar Sam Worthington. She returns to similarly angst-ridden territory, but ups the stakes considerably by shooting this feature entirely in Germany, and in German language. Shortland doesn’t speak German, but spent years adapting the film from World War Two novel The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert. It’s an audaciously different take on the Holocaust story, seen through the eyes of

I

15-year-old Lore (Saskia Rosendahl, pictured), the eldest child of two Nazis who abandon her after the death of Hitler in 1945. Destitute Lore is now in charge of her four siblings - tomboy sister Liesel, rascal twins Gunther and Jurgen and infant baby Peter, and drags them on a 900 kilometre journey to their grandmother’s house in Hamburg. Starving and hopelessly out of her depth, Lore meets Thomas (Kai Malina), a young Jewish survivor, who inexplicably decides to help the struggling minors in their quest across the terrifying Black Forest. Thomas is the manifestation of all Lore has been taught to hate, but the attraction between the two is charged and compelling. Stunningly shot by Australian wunderkind

cinematographer Adam Arkapaw (Animal Kingdom, Snowtown), the story plays out on a captivatingly bleak series of landscapes - the real life locations of many Holocaust atrocities. The relentless hunger, filth, tears, dirt, blood and guts will be too much for some viewers, but it’s handled with the artful tension of a thriller. Shortland has unearthed another star in Rosendahl, who plays the anguished damsel in distress with fierce grace. Interestingly the actress was cast just a few days before shooting began after Shortland had rejected over 300 girls. Lore has been submitted to the Academy Awards as Australia’s nomination for Best Foreign Language film. It deserves to be nominated, and to be seen.

he economic crisis, male prostitution and comedy. The three go hand in hand, right? If you’re the creators of dark HBO sitcom Hung, they sure as hell do. Broke and recently divorced, high school baseball coach Ray Drecker (Thomas Jane) had to find a novel way to earn more money to support his teenage twins and build his home on a Detroit riverbank. So, with the creative input of his new friend, scatterbrained poet Tanya (Jane Adams), Ray takes up work as a prostitute – or, to keep it on the lowdown from his colleagues and ex-wife, a ‘‘happiness consultant’’. That’s the basic premise of Hung, which is now in its third and final series. Over the course of two years, the show has generally moved away from its early portrayal of recession-hit Detroit to become a true character comedy. By series three, Ray has still managed to keep his second

job secret from his friends and family despite some close calls. Business is booming; so much so that Ray, Tanya and sometimes colleague, sometimes arch enemy Lenore (a scene-stealing Rebecca Creskoff) have hired an office space (‘‘Wellness Centre for Women’’ reads the sign above the psychedelic entrance) where they run ‘‘life classes’’ and have even employed a second hunk-for-hire, Jason (Stephen Amell). With only three episodes left – the show was axed by HBO at the end of this season — things are heating up. Ray is still in love with his ex Jessica (Anne Heche), who is fresh out of her second marriage. But she’s inching closer to finding out just how Ray is making his money. Next week, a vindictive Lenore takes matters into her own hands by inviting Jessica (they are friends; didn’t you know Detroit’s a small city?) along to a class at the wellness centre. Cue panic as Ray, waiting in another room before parading in front of the women, needs to find an escape route – putting his family life before business. Hung is fast and often very funny, but there are flaws. Some peripheral characters – like Ray’s

Rose Tremain Random House Following on from Restoration, Rose Tremain’s latest historical novel continues the story of the mercurial Merivel, physician to Charles II, or at least, to his dogs. Merivel is a man at the mercy of his emotions, and this book has him facing up to a late-life crisis. His daughter is slowly moving away from the familial embrace and Merivel, finding himself at the end of his career and with too much time on his hands, travels to Versailles to offer his services to the royal family. His ambitions come to naught, but his adventures lead him to Louise, an amateur scientist, and her jealous husband, and his life takes a sudden upswing. It’s both confronting and moving, and threaded with a heavy melancholy at all times. While the plot might sound like engaging Restoration romp, to dismiss it as such does a massive disservice to this wonderful book. – Jan Fisher

twins Damon and Darby – disappear for episodes at a time. And it’s hard to believe Tanya as an in-demand pimp when her main role is to provide bumbling, stumbling comic relief. The good outweighs the bad, though – and if nothing else, Hung is evidence small business isn’t dying – even if that business is a little below the belt. Seven, Tuesday, 11.30pm

Jennifer Miller Text Publishing The Year of the Gadfly won’t be for everyone’s taste. While it’s smart, funny and sad all at the same time, it’s also quite confronting, and if you had a hard time at high school it may bring back a few bad memories. The book has two intertwined storylines. First there is Iris, whose parents have moved her to a secluded private school to help her recover from a friend’s suicide. She becomes linked with the past when she discovers a textbook in her room dedicated ‘‘To Lily’’, who attended the same school more than a decade ago and the book switches between their two stories. Add a sinister high school secret society and a charismatic teacher linking the two girls and it’s a busy read. The writing is razor sharp, but the flip side of that is that the level of sophistication the teens show in the book is a little unlikely. It’s definitely a book for grownups only. – Jan Fisher

ne would expect at this time of the year I’d write a piece on bubbles, as it’s spring time and the horse-racing season is upon us. As this is my final piece for the Weekly, bubbles would also be a nice way to toast the many wonderful people who have worked with me over the last few years. But bubbles are so predictable, so instead let’s look at some hard liquor: eaux de vie. As a tribute and way of showing my gratitude to those who have helped me on

my journey at the Weekly, I have chosen the finest grappa one could find, a drink of ethereal beauty and timelessness. These are the eaux de vie of Nonino. This fiery liquid scares more people than almost any other beverage, but it has a quiet loveliness that I hope you will find the time to admire. When I met the Noninos in Friuli, they had an incredible zest for life. They shouted ‘‘Viva!’’ as we toasted seemingly the smallest things. On arrival, we drank a little Amaro . . . ‘‘Viva!’’ Salami to begin the meal . . . ‘‘Viva!’’ Baci chocolate filled with Nonino grappa to finish . . . ‘‘Viva!’’ So this is my final drink, my farewell piece, my written ‘‘Viva!’’ to the encouraging, the generous, the smiling and incredibly helpful people who have been a part of my time at the Weekly. I’m not sure if they all drink grappa, but I will certainly have one for each of them.

We had to strip the game back to its basics but the girls’ enthusiasm was enormous and they were willing to learn.” Many had never played junior football before, so Barden made education a top priority. “We wanted to keep it basic during the year, making sure we understood each other’s roles and be predictable to one another.” Despite the challenges he faced trying to get the group to play cohesive football, Barden says it was “the most enjoyable year of footy I’ve ever had”. “I was involved with a group of people who just love the game,” he says. “We stuck together even when we went in as underdogs.” ■

Volvo’s S60T4 is a good thing, and cheaper, and Audi’s new A4 is an outstanding package for sporty drivers, while Mercedes-Benz’s C-class is an evergreen that just keeps on selling. So BMW has put its running shoes on and beefed up the 3 with a lot of nice stuff, including a superb eight-speed gearbox and a delightful motor that develops lots of power for its size. And there’s a nice idea with the auto stop/start system. The tachometer indicates if the ignition is on or off when the engine is stopped. As users of auto stop/start will tell you, this is handy

B

for those times when a silent engine does nott necessarily mean an the ignition is off, which can lead to frustration in n car parks. For all of this cleverness, ss, though, there’s a dumb idea. While hile the engine can be started withoutt the key, the door or locks can only be operated by pressing the relevant button on the key. This means you di dig around d ffor iit, unlock the door, put the key away (there’s no aperture for it inside) and then dig around for it again when you get out. The only reason I can think of for this is to persuade you to spend the extra $846 (yes, $846!) for a fully operational proximity key. Otherwise, I really like this car.

I like the sports package, which adds $4000. As well as being able to up to $ up extra latitude with the stability dial u control, and more entertaining change contr points with the gearbox, the cabin is point nicer. The 3-series is better. But so n is everything else. Take a long look at the Audi and the Volvo. IIn a nutshell:

Ah, the b benefits of strong competition. ■ The new 135-kilowatt motor is a gem, surprisingly the eight-speed i i l quick, i k and d th i ht d auto t gives i it superb flexibility. And this comes into play all the time, in relentless city traffic or giving it heaps out on quiet country roads. And as well as handling beautifully it rides surprisingly well, making this a very easy car to live with. And it’s pretty economical, too.

Thin you didn’t Things know about motoring In the movie Cars, the spark plug lights on the roof of Flo’s Diner light up in the same firing order as the classic flathead Ford V8.

Epic in Epping Earth, water, air and fire – this striking property has all elements covered

STEPHEN A RUSSELL PROPERTY WRITER he scale of this contemporary residence strikes you from the moment you pull up on Hayston Boulevard. An impressive gum tree softens the clean lines of number three, a sprawling property with plenty to offer, and all of the highest quality. Follow the decked pathway to double woodenframed glass front doors and step inside to a porcelain-tiled hallway with contrasting dark tiles and a central, pale runway that leads through the heart of this home, with a tantalising glimpse of the deep blue swimming pool out the back. An open-plan formal lounge and dining room

T

on the right is positioned through two pillars, with thick biscuit-coloured carpet underfoot, big windows on two sides and dark wood plantation shutters lending privacy to the front. Across the vast hall is a good-sized study, again pleasingly carpeted, with two tall plantationshuttered windows. A well-appointed shower room is at one side, overlooking the side yard. There’s a handy coat cupboard just outside, at the foot of the striking central staircase in blonde wood. Move along the hallway and glass double doors swing open on the huge living zone to the rear, bringing in plenty of natural light. This glossy-tiled space is broken into three distinct areas – living, meals and kitchen. At the apex of this open-plan space is a light-filled meals area with bifold doors on three sides, with views of the backyard, its pool and its alfresco dining deck. A large contemporary kitchen is placed to the left. A large, chocolate-toned Caesarstone island bench anchors the kitchen, surrounded by a

generous amount of pale cabinetry to ensure a place for everything, including wine racks and a concealed fridge-freezer. Two Technika wall ovens and a Miele coffee maker are built in. A separate Technika fiveburner stovetop sits to one side, with a Technika dishwasher completing the picture. Even the laundry, with access to a neat side yard, is overscale. Up the smart staircase you find a huge rumpus facing the street, with access to a balcony over the entrance. There’s plenty of room to set up another lounge or a study area for the kids. Through double hideaway doors you’ll find the main bedroom overlooking the backyard. The bed occupies a raised platform, with a huge walk-in wardrobe and dressing room tucked behind a floating wall with a window. There’s also room for a private retreat or reading nook, with the soothing sounds of the trickling water feature drifting up from the garden below. An enormous en suite, bigger than most family bathrooms, contains a huge, oval spa bath

raised on a mosaic-tiled plinth. A dark stone vanity accommodates two white ceramic bowls set against a mosaic wall. A roomy shower and powder room are tucked behind. Just outside the main bedroom, another big bathroom with a deep tub and separate shower is next to a powder room. Three oversized bedrooms line the right-hand side of this floor, each with built-in mirrored wardrobes and views out over hills and trees. The backyard has a handsome barbecue area on one side, overlooking a lawn area. A lock-up shed by the back fence provides secure storage for pool and gardening equipment. The rectangular swimming pool with a cascading water feature is positioned in the heart of this area, with a covered alfresco dining area alongside. The rotating ceiling fan is a blessing on hot summer nights. A second side yard leads back to the double garage, via a hedgerow, covered in white blossoms during spring, and a raised vegetable garden for dedicated home cooks. ■
