Estate agent on drug charges BY SUE HEWITT shewitt@mmpgroup.com.au

TWO estate agents have been charged over the use of 25 rental properties used to grow hydroponic marijuana crops in the northern suburbs. The directors of the Barry Plant real estate Epping franchise were charged with aiding and abetting the commercial cultivation and trafficking of illegal drugs. Inspector Bob Dykstra said police were investigating the death last Thursday of one of the directors, but he said police did not believe there were any suspicious circumstances. A property manager at the Epping

franchise had been interviewed by police and would be charged on summons with drug-related offences, police said. Several other men had been

charged or have charges pending over the alleged drug houses in Epping, South Morang, Wollert, Lalor, Mill Park and Preston, Detective Leading Senior Constable Haydn Beale said. He said the Whittlesea Crime Investigation Unit swooped on the houses last Tuesday after a tip-off and found 3000 cannabis plants. An Epping man, 52, who allegedly rented all 25 properties, was charged with 10 counts of cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis, Mr Beale said. Five other men had been charged with separate counts of cultivating and trafficking a commercial quantity of drugs, he said. One of the men was reported to the Immigration Department over

alleged visa violations. A 36-year-old Thomastown man had been questioned and released pending inquiries and would be charged on summons, Mr Beale said. Barry Plant chief executive Mike McCarthy said two employees at the Epping branch had been fired, while the two directors who had been charged had said they were innocent. “It was one rogue employee in one independently owned office,” Mr McCarthy said. ‘‘This is isolated to one office.’’ He said the directors had stepped aside from their roles pending the investigation. Rental properties had been transferred from the Epping office to the Thomastown office.

Vintage ute’s just beaut The unveiling of Holden’s new VF Commodore isn’t stirring up car collector Don Urquhart. He’s a “Ford man” but more than that, he hates new cars but relishes vintage models. The retired Doreen plumber’s love affair with old cars started almost 20 years ago when he bought a 1946 Ford ute freighter with running boards, huge wheel covers and a shiny vertical grille. He spent four years restoring it to its original black and red paint job and added two more cars to his collection, including a 1950 Morris commercial truck, just like the one his father bought new in 1949 and used as a work vehicle for his own plumbing business.

Epping CFA captain, Heath Kenzie, said firefighters had organised three more ‘‘Fire Ready” safety meetings for residents as the hot weather was predicted to continue. Mr Kenzie said the meetings would help residents avoid “last minute panic” and allow them to discuss how to prepare for a fire. He said families could share their experiences or learn from others at the community meetings. “You have to prepare yourself for all the dos and dont’s on total fire ban days and hot days,” he said. ■ Meeting times: Tuesday, March 26 at 7.30pm at the Beveridge Hall, Lithgow Street, Beveridge; Thursday, March 28 at 7.30pm at the Epping Fire Station, 2 O’Hearns Road, Epping and Thursday, March 28 at 7.30pm at Hume Anglican Grammar, 100 Mount Ridley Road, Mickleham.

Many alone in miscarriage grief BY SUE HEWITT UP to one in five pregnancies end in miscarriage but many women suffer in silence, according to a La Trobe University academic. Midwifery professor Susan McDonald said the miscarriage rate might be higher than 20 per cent because it was believed that early pregnancies might end without the woman being aware of the pregnancy. She said it could be a “lonely time” for women who miscarried. “Friends, family and co-workers often feel anxious about broaching a sensitive topic for fear of upsetting a woman or saying what they perceive might be the wrong thing, not realising that for some women saying nothing makes them feel as though the loss is not important,” she said. Ms McDonald said 80 per cent of miscarriages happened in the first 12

weeks, and could be devastating. “The hopes, dreams and plans that begin to be made can come to a cruel and devastating end with the loss of the pregnancy,” she said. “It may also occur at a time in the pregnancy when the woman has not told a lot of people, therefore friends, family, work colleagues may be unaware of the loss and the accompanying sorrow and emotional pain the woman is experiencing.” She said women and couples often looked for a cause. “This often manifests itself as guilt about what may have happened such as they went for a run up a flight of stairs, ate a meal that was too spicy or had an argument; none of which are known to be causes at all, but there is a need to make sense of the loss.”

With a heavenly harp accompanying them, the Greenbrook Singers have the voices of angels. Conductor and harpist Margaret Crichton (centre) says the women, aged from 60 to 85, are untrained “shower singers” from Greenbrook Community House in Epping. They performed last weekend at the Whittlesea Community Festival. “We started in 2004 and some of the original members are still part of our 10 woman line-up, singing everything from golden oldies, folk, ’60s and ’70s pop music and songs in other languages,” Crichton says. “We mostly sing a cappella but also use the folk harp. If people want to join all you need is a love of singing.”

South Morang locals are now among the first in Australia to have access to Telstra’s new services on the super-fast National Broadband Network (NBN). No doubt many of you will be asking “Why should I change over to the NBN?”. Well, the simple answer is; it’s all about speed and being able to do more things at once. Gone are the days of making a cuppa while you wait for a file to download – with Telstra services on the NBN, you can start watching a BigPond ® movie faster than it takes to make up your mind about what to watch. Fibre’s extra bandwidth enables the whole household to perform several tasks at once like downloading movies on your T-Box ® or computer while checking the weather on the T-Hub ® 2, or streaming internet radio while uploading photos to Facebook ® – all at high speed, and all at the same time. As Australia’s largest full-service provider, Telstra is uniquely positioned with its popular bundles, improved customer service and more than 100 years experience in connecting Australians to support South Morang residents as they move into a new fibre future. We are working closely with our customers to make the process of connecting to the NBN as simple and hassle-free as possible through our team of Telstra Fibre Connection Specialists. Once NBN Co connects the fibre to a customer’s home, Telstra will complete the installation with a follow-up appointment where one of our specialists

will connect the customer to Telstra’s services and ensure devices such as the T-Hub 2 are fully connected. According to recent Telstra research, the average Australian home has up to five devices connecting to the internet at any one time, so we have designed a range of bundle plans to provide generous data allowances to enable our customers to connect to the NBN with confidence. Customers have access to a dedicated call centre, 24/7 online and technical support, and a team of trained technicians who offer after hours and weekend appointments. Our team of technicians recognise that every home is different, and will take the time to explain how to get the most out of your devices and ensure you have the right set up for your household. In the next decade, we will see an explosion in the number of connected household devices as the way we use technology to communicate with each other, and the world, continues to evolve. With Telstra services on the NBN, you’ll be ready to take full advantage of them and move confidently into the fibre future.

To find out more about Telstra’s services on the NBN, where they’re available and if you can get connected visit your local Telstra Store at Plenty Valley or call 1800 TFIBRE (1800 834 273) or visit telstra.com/unlockamazing

Patients put at risk: paramedic BY SUE HEWITT PEOPLE suffering heart attacks could be ignored by nearby Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance units under new rules, according to a northern suburbs MICA paramedic. He claimed measures to cut ambulance officers’ overtime could cost someone’s life. Ambulance Victoria has ordered that when a specialist MICA unit is at the end of its 12 or 14-hour shift, it would not be sent to heart attack victims even if it was the closest unit, said the officer, who did not want to be named. He claimed that instead of a specialist ambulance, the victim would get an ordinary ambulance if there were no MICA units still on call. Ambulance Employees Australia Victorian secretary Steve McGhie said the rule also applied to ordinary

Great-grandfather Mark Stewart suffered chronic asthma but now he’s breathing easy and believes it’s because of a centuries-old remedy. The Epping man is part of a clinical trial by RMIT’s Bundoora Chinese Medicine school into the effect of ginseng on lung disease. It is a blind study in which participants are given ginseng tablets or placebos without knowing which they are taking. The university is seeking 50 more volunteers. Stewart, 66, says that before he started the trial his breathing was so laboured he had to give up his job as a school crossing supervisor for four months and couldn’t walk up stairs. “Now I walk up and down Epping Plaza and it’s a breeze. My doctor and pharmacist can’t believe I am the same man.

ambulances. “If you’ve got an ambulance close to a [heart attack] victim but it’s at the end of a shift, they will not be sent and that can make a lifeand-death difference, he said. The recent decision to apply the “knock off rule to 12-hour shifts — the rule had been in place for 14-hour shifts for some time — revealed holes in the ambulance service, Mr McGhie said. He said there were not enough officers to deal with emergencies which had lead to unreasonable overtime demands and paramedic fatigue. Simon Thomson, Ambulance Victoria’s regional manager of metrowest, said the measures aimed to help paramedics working peak shifts to finish on time and reduce fatigue, and did not put the community at risk. “We have added 10 more shifts across Melbourne to support the changes, Mr Thomson said.

Love lost

Up to one in five pregnancies ends in a miscarriage. Most women suffer in silence, she says. Most miscarriages happen in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy when women are yet to share their news. Ristic was so overjoyed that she had told her family at Christmas, only to lose the babies on December 31. She says women need support and she was lucky to have a network of friends through the Diamond Valley Multiple Births Association, of which she is president. Ristic already had non-identical twins, Sebastian and Charlotte, now two, when she fell pregnant with the second set last year. She and husband Ben, an IT worker, were excited. “We always wanted four children. That would complete our family,” Ristic says. “[But] it wasn’t meant to be, something was wrong.” She suffered major bleeding and an ultrasound showed only one heartbeat. The twins shared a placenta, so the other would not survive. “Nobody tells you about the pain [with a miscarriage]; it was worse than contractions,” Ristic says. And no one told her of the emotional pain afterwards that would see her curled up on the couch, crying uncontrollably. But the multiple-birth association women were there for her. “Too many women are alone; too many say nothing,” Ristic says. “I had women who picked me up when I was down and took me for a coffee.”

Today she looks at her first-born children with love. They were a happy accident, she says. “We wanted to get ahead and were trying to be terribly sensible before we started a family but the universe had other plans,” she says. Ristic suffered cramps and went to a doctor and discovered she was pregnant. An ultrasound revealed twins. It was a “dream” pregnancy with no morning sickness but when Ristic started getting “baby brain” and couldn’t focus on teaching English as a second language, she quit her day job. She left her second job at a supermarket after a female customer jumped the counter and tried to attack her. “I was carrying two lives and couldn’t risk it,” she says. Ristic says having twins is a joy despite the hard work. The multiple-births association provides practical help, including delivering home-cooked meals at a time when Ristic had not left the house for a week. The association provides playgroups and mums-and-bubs days as well as support and sharing. “We’re trying again [to fall pregnant], and yes, we want twins.” I The Diamond Valley Multiple Births Association is holding an Easter egg hunt with other family activities at the Briar Hill community hall, 126 Mountain View Road, Briar Hill, at 11am on Sunday, March 24. COVERSTORY

A new school named in honour of Australia’s first saint is a godsend for the northern suburbs, writes Sue Hewitt

saint once walked the dusty roads of Epping North in the 1800s, but few who saw the little girl realised she could perform miracles. Dressed in the humble clothes of a farmer’s daughter, Mary Helen MacKillop would probably have kicked at loose stones with worn boots or ridden a horse along the tracks that then served as roads. She was six when her father moved the family from Fitzroy, where Mary was born in 1842, to his wife’s parents’ farm in Epping North. The first mass in the area was celebrated in 1848 at the home of Mary’s maternal grandparents, the McDonalds. A priest rode on horseback from St Francis Church in Melbourne to perform the service. It is not known whether this introduced young Mary MacKillop to her life’s work which, in 2010, led to her becoming Australia’s first and only saint after the Catholic church recognised a series of miracles in her name. To the people of the northern suburbs she is still performing ‘‘miracles’’ today, in the form of a new school named in her honour: St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Catholic Parish Primary School. The school’s principal, Geraldine Dalton, says MacKillop’s childhood connection to the area underscores its special relationship with the saint.

A

MacKillop founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart, or Josephites, which established schools throughout Australasia for the poor, especially in rural areas. She opened the first Josephite school in a converted stable in Penola, South Australia, in 1866, and now history has repeated itself at the Epping North school. Dalton says while her school, built on the historic Creed family dairy farm, has a contemporary building it also has a barn and farmhouse dating back to the 1850s, which have been refurbished. ‘‘The beginnings of our school are very similar to the beginnings of the school Mary set up in Penola on a farm,’’ says Dalton. ‘‘We too are on farmland, and we have a converted barn and farmhouse, and we have strong links to Mary’s early days and her goal of serving the needs of local children.’’ There are 67 students and eight staff at the school but Dalton expects this figure to swell to 500 pupils over the next five years. It is a godsend to residents of the ever-expanding Aurora housing estate, and is part of the Catholic Education department’s $250 million plan to open 13 schools in Melbourne’s north and west growth corridors, including Doreen, during the next decade. “We are serving a need for Catholic families; there’s a lot of development in this area with younger families looking for schools,” says Dalton. “All indications are that building this school was the right thing to do.” [ 10 ] NORTHERN WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Catholic Parish Primary School pupils Sienna (grade 1), Mitchell (grade 1) and Nayanika (grade 2)

The Epping North school cost $4.3 million, with the local community raising $2.3 million and the federal government providing the rest. The new open-plan building encourages interaction, communication and collaboration, and allows children of different ages to work together and share technology resources, says Dalton. The school’s eldest pupil is Lisa, who is also the school’s only grade 6 pupil. Dalton says because the school has personalised education plans, Lisa is not disadvantaged

being on her own. “If there were other grade 6 pupils they would all be on their own individual plans, too,” Dalton says. As for Lisa, she says she loves the new school. “I like how when you look outside the windows you see open space and I can’t help wondering what it will look like in the future when my little brother Walter comes to school here [next year]. “I love our colourful school and I love how everything is open [plan].”

members of the MacKillop and McDonald families lived in this area too and Mary would have traversed this countryside visiting aunts and uncles and cousins.”

The official opening on March 3 by McEwen MHR Rob Mitchell and blessing by Denis Hart, the Archbishop of Melbourne, was attended by members of Mary’s Josephite order. Sister Josephine Dubiel, the Josephite provincial leader of Victoria-Tasmania was accompanied by sisters Shirley O’Toole, Jeanne Dwyer and Mary Davis. “The children greeted us warmly with lovely smiles and an obvious pride in their new school,” Sister Josephine says. “With the recently opened restored farmhouse and barn

too, we could not help but recall that as Sister Mary, Mary MacKillop opened her first school in a stable, renovated by her brother John, at Penola. Mary believed that children ‘deserved the best we can offer’.” She says MacKillop’s childhood as the eldest of eight children was not easy. “In unfortunate financial circumstances, the family had to leave their cottage and move further out from Melbourne and take up farming, first at Merri Creek, and then Darebin Creek [Epping North]. Other

In April 1847, when MacKillop was five, tragedy struck when her maternal grandfather fell into the swollen Darebin creek and died. “Mary was very fond of her grandfather and even as an adult she would remember him with a tear on his birthday,” Sister Josephine says. “It was from her grandfather that Mary learnt some Gaelic – he always called her his ‘gnothch miadhail’, meaning ‘my precious thing’.” Sister Josephine believes the family moved to a dairy farm in Plenty in 1853 where Mary’s father, Alexander, stood for the seat of North Bourke in the fairly new Victorian parliament. “While he had no money to run a big or successful campaign, one of his election policies was to try to get the government to build a school for the 30 to 40 children ‘in this remote part of the colony’,” she says. “Both Alexander MacKillop and his daughter Mary would be pleased to see such wonderful educational facilities for their neighbours’ children of today.” MacKillop’s presence is everywhere in the new school: from paintings, texts and other symbols of her, to a religious ‘‘relic’’, a revered piece of her 1914 coffin. Father Maurie Cooney, the parish priest for Epping and Epping North, discovered the relic when he visited the Josephite sisters. A piece of cedar, measuring about 10 by five centimetres, the relic sits in a glass display cabinet in the school’s administration office, along with a note printed with MacKillop’s words: ‘‘How I wish we would remember that we are but travellers here”. ‘‘Her words ... have an urging about them, and urgency too, and a determination,’’ Father Maurie told the crowd at the recent school opening. Dalton believes the school will have a lasting legacy. “Mary’s adult approach is an inspiration for us in this new parish and school venture,” she says. “By learning about St Mary of the Cross as a person, we can be motivated by her courage, care for others, commitment to action and embracing God in the ordinariness of her life. Recognising and living these gifts is a wonderful foundation on which to create a new school community.” I March 19, 2013 NORTHERN WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

Campion of the world

Like an Antipodean version of Twin Peaks, this series is one of the best of the year TOP OF THE LAKE

When: March 24, 8.30pm Where: UKTV Details: visit uktv.com.au

T

he premise of this new Antipodean series feels deeply familiar: a young girl disappears from a remote community, leading to an investigation that uncovers a web of secrets. In this case, the small town is in the mountains of New Zealand’s south island – Hobbit country – and the young girl is a pregnant 12-year-old. Despite being built on a familiar hook, the return to television by writer and director Jane Campion is anything but old hat. Instead, she uses a well-worn map to jaunt off in surprising, fresh and slightly weird directions. There’s more than a hint of Twin Peaks here, although Top of the Lake feels far more grounded. Star Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men’s Peggy) has a decent stab at the New Zealand accent, bringing a warm tenderness to her flawed detective, whose strident exterior belies an ancient hurt. David Wenham is gruffly endearing as her somewhat suspect colleague, while Peter Mullan is terrifying as the town’s unofficial overlord. Campion manages to tease us with glimpses of each character’s secrets, but never leaves us feeling alienated. But it is the writing that truly sets this series apart. Not only is it, to date, the best thing on television this year, it’s also one of the finest Australian productions (or co-productions) in a decade. Top of the Lake shows how much better our telly could be if it had the scripts to match.

DAUGHTER

What: If You Leave (4AD) Details: visit ohdaughter.com

T

he superb debut from London trio Daughter isn’t so much slow burn as gentle thaw. The tunes glow from beneath three feet of ice, content to keep their distance. Elena Tonra’s voice is fragile but aloof, skating across pristine, often minimalist instrumentation. Yet, for all its apparent coldness, this is a work of barely restrained, dirty passion. There’s nothing quite as naked and raw as early single Landfill, but when opener Winter finally breaks a sweat, its ragged energy recalls the thrilling heartache of Lamb’s Gorecki. Beautiful and affecting, the album’s chilled charms are epitomised by new single Still. Stirring the cold ashes of an affair, it perfectly evokes the painful push and pull of broken love, with its two lovers “reaching for each others’ wounds”. If You Leave resounds with hurt, but is all the more delicious for it.

cop John McClane (Willis) jets off to Moscow to find his estranged son, and gets entangled in a half-arsed plot involving Chernobyl. Any attempt to make McClane a nuanced, vaguely realistic character has gone out the window. Here, he is a psychopathic nuisance, a gun-toting carjacker who takes joy in killing as many people as possible. But, he is the hero. The action is similarly ridiculous. Trucks jump from one freeway tier to another. Our heroes

leap from the 10th floor with nary a scratch. If it sounds laughable, it is. I laughed more often and more heartily than during the most recent Judd Apatow effort, usually in the wrong places. Die Hard has always been a franchise built on misfires and cast-offs. The original film was supposed to be a Schwarzenegger sequel and the first four were based on unrelated novels. In that light, it makes sense that number five should be a cartoonish, deeply silly Bond-style thriller.

Beauty and brains Japanese style meets European safety. By Rod Easdown

limb into practically any car made in Germany – anything from a Porsche to a Volkswagen – and the immediate impression is of solidity. It feels secure, robust, substantial. Above all it feels safe. It’s a thing the Germans can do that car makers across the rest of the world just can’t seem to achieve. But the Mazda 6 is coming close. It’s not quite a BMW 3-series but it’s as close as a Japanese car has got. It’s a most impressive thing. This all became clear on a sharp lefthand corner pitted and rutted with old,

weather-beaten bitumen. It gets most cars untidy at 100 km/h, but the 6 rounded it beautifully, solid as a rock. No lateral bounciness, no skipping, no OMG moment. It felt as good as a BMW. Japanese cars are not normally like this. You can pick them blindfolded; the controls are light, the handling is adequate if uninspiring, but there’s an overarching degree of blandness that makes the whole experience rather forgettable. The Mazda 6 has gone a cut above. The controls are light but accurate and fast, and nicely in touch with what’s happening. The suspension rides nicely but it’s firm enough to feel good in the twisty bits. Mostly it just feels really well built, organised and sorted. OK, the engine note, although not unpleasant is nowhere near as nice as a BMW; when it’s under full load it’s more noisy than stirring, but the car is quick off the mark and overtakes with authority. Road noise is high at freeway speeds

Mazda 6 Atenza What is it? Mazda’s big family car. What’s in it? A 138 kilowatt 2.5-litre four cylinder with a six-speed auto. Is it thirsty? I used 11 litres per 100 km in the city, 6.7 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.6. Drive away $51,216. Prices start at $37,388. Thumbs up Build quality, space, comfort. despite Mazda’s electronic noise-cancelling technology. A change of tyres may help this. And Mazda’s auto start/stop is pretty rough. But it looks good. There’s a slightly muted aggression to the flowing lines and the back looks just as good as the front. I parked one beside a 3-series and it made the BMW look, well, rather boringly conventional. The interior is just as good; excellent seating, although headroom is tight in the back, all mod cons and good quality audio and navigation. Boot space is nothing special and under the floor you’ll only find a spacesaver spare. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable drive. My only complaint was that around the city the automatic transmission, which is calibrated for economy, can be less than responsive. The Atenza is the top model and diesel adds about $3000. Personally I’d have the petrol. I

Built to last

Grand scale and a top location appeal at this much-loved property

LIAM CARTER PROPERTY WRITER

T

his property has only ever been owned by one family. The very same hands that laid the bricks of this classic triple-fronted house 34 years ago have lovingly updated it ever since, ensuring it has been extended over time in a style consistent to the property’s origins. The house is much bigger now than it was back in the late 1970s, and bigger than it appears from the street. Stepping inside gives you a clue of its size – you can see all the way from the front door to the distant back wall of the billiards room.

The house is decked out in timber front to back, lending the property a timeless warmth and character. Pine-lined ceilings are held up with burly timber beams in the lounge giving the impression you could just as easily be in an alpine chalet. Polished floors shine softly in the natural light which streams through the timber-framed corner windows. The lounge and tiled meals area are separated by a built-in display unit which has downlights. The nearby kitchen has been built by a family who loves to cook. It has a large breakfast bar and top-of-the line appliances, including a 900mm oven and a Bosch dishwasher. From the kitchen sink, you get another clue of the size of the house with views across the rooftop.

The double-storey extension begins with a foyer with a stacked-stone feature wall. From here, you can step up to two of the property’s five bedrooms. The main bedroom has an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and parkland views. Step down to the large billiards/rumpus room. Timber-lined ceilings and a potbelly wood stove with slate surrounds ensure the alpine chalet aesthetic continues in this space. Two sets of French doors swing open to what is arguably this property’s finest feature. This is not just any covered outdoor entertainment area, it’s the five-star, king-size variety with a pitched, conservatory-style roof that extends from the single garage at the side of the house to the extension. A table big enough for a royal banquet is stretched beneath.

The deck then expands further at the rear of the house, providing friends and family members with plenty of space to relax. The view across the backyard to Edgars Creek and the Thomas Street Reserve is the cherry on top. The property backs onto Thomastown’s prized waterway which runs down to Westgarthtown – Victoria’s oldest German settlement. A moment’s stroll from this property will take you to the beautiful bluestone buildings and gardens of this 1850s village. Descendants of the family who built the main farm house in the village found it difficult to leave. They stayed there until the 1970s when the settlement was purchased by the Whittlesea council. I
