Mixed fortunes on house prices BY SUE HEWITT sue.hewitt@fairfaxmedia.com.au HOUSE prices have given vendors in Whittlesea suburbs mixed results in the past quarter. The latest Real Estate of Victoria figures show the residential housing market was stable. Melbourne’s median house price rose slightly to $530,000 from the June-quarter median of $525,000, REIV boss Enzo Raimondo said.

Local winners were Doreen, Bundoora and South Morang. House prices dropped in Epping, Lalor and Mill Park, according to the REIV figures. The best results were for houses in Doreen. Its median price hit $510,000 in the past quarter, up 4.6 per cent on the June-quarter median of $487,500. The improvement took the price rise in Doreen to 8.7 per cent over the year so far.

In Bundoora, the September quarter’s median house price hit $505,500 – a 3.7 per cent increase on the previous quarter, making an annual increase of 1.5 per cent. Median house sales in South Morang gained $2000, or 0.5 per cent, to record a $432,000 price tag in the September quarter and a 2.9 per cent gain over the year. However, Lalor was hit hard. Median house prices slumped 2.3 per cent from the last quarter to

$360,000 and plummeted 6.5 per cent over the year. Epping properties dropped 3.4 per cent from $381,500 in the June quarter to $368,500 in the September quarter, while house prices over the year rose one per cent. Mill Park lost 1.2 per cent for the last quarter, with the median house price slipping $5000 to $400,000. There were too few sales in Whittlesea, Mernda and Thomastown to give reliable results.

Flat out raising cancer funds Leaping lizards! Lynden Kronk, a South Morang personal trainer, has used his head to get attention for an important issue. In the spirit of charity volunteers shaving off their hair to raise funds to help others, Mr Kronk has had his hair sculpted into a show-stopping coiffure. The lizard design has attracted more than a few comments and, more importantly, donations for Challenge, which supports kids with cancer. Mr Kronk is funding-raising this month in memory of his sister, Suzanne Baldwin. The siblings were separated in childhood and reunited last year, only to discover Ms Baldwin had terminal cancer. Mr Kronk’s events include a silent auction, a car-boot sale and fitness events at his workplace, One Health and Fitness at South Morang. Details: call 9436 6122.

No longer is there the spinster librarian of urban legend strictly enforcing the no talking rule. Go to your local library today and you are likely to hear children roaring like lions at story time, chattering while they complete craft activities, or using iPads to read and complete literacy and numeracy activities. There are school holiday activities, celebrations such as Halloween and multicultural gettogethers, and patrons can even play our Wii. You will be surprised at what you’ll find. There’s free wi-fi, computers and printing, plus photocopying and scanning facilities. Libraries offer computer classes from the most basic to an advanced level on a variety of topics. The librarian’s role is changing, too. I help people troubleshoot their portable devices, and solve problems with their computers. My day might involve helping someone learn how to use their new iPad or mobile phone, teaching a group of older people how to download an e-book from the library, sell online using eBay, or use Pinterest or Skype. We have genealogy research classes and facilities, meeting rooms and much more.

We still lend out books, but they’re not dusty and old. The collection is being refreshed and updated all the time. You don’t even need to visit the library to get reading. Anyone with a library card can now

download e-books, audio books, electronic magazines from Zinio, and any music from the Sony catalogue, for free. Mill Park Library will also be a digital hub for the National Broadband Network, offering training for the services that the NBN will enable. Your library offers quiet study areas, chessboards, Foxtel viewing, audio CDs, DVDs and daily newspapers and magazines in English and many other languages. Libraries also offer spaces for displays and exhibitions of interest to the local community, discussion groups, author talks, book launches, and book discussion groups where like-minded people come together to share their passion. We are also gearing up to offer e-book discussion groups. Your library is part of the community, conducting children’s story times outside the library at child care and shopping centres to a growing number of enthusiastic participants. Staff also visit aged care facilities and other people who find it difficult to get to the library as part of the home library and outreach services. ■

NORTHERN motorists seeing red over traffic-camera fines at a major Thomastown intersection may get some relief. The state government has added the intersection of High Street, Mahoneys Road and Keon Parade to a hit list of red-light camera sites to be investigated. The intersection allegedly had an incorrect amber light period of three seconds instead of the AustRoads specified 4.5 seconds for almost a year from October 20, 2011, to September 26, 2012. Police and Emergency Services Minister Peter Ryan said he had asked Victorian Road Safety Camera Commissioner Gordon Lewis to broaden his investigation into amber light times at red-light camera intersections.

The probe started with questions about the amber light period at a Melbourne airport intersection. Mr Ryan said VicRoads had identified seven additional sites found to be ‘‘inconsistent’’ with AustRoads guidelines. ‘‘VicRoads has now confirmed all signals are operating in accordance with the guidelines,’’ he said. Other good news for local drivers comes with the promise that Plenty Road will be opened as a divided road with two lanes of traffic in each direction by Christmas, except for a small stretch at Gordons Road. VicRoads project director Andrew Williams said that despite the poor site conditions and persistent wet weather, the new lanes would be ready by the holiday season. He said work on the stretch near Gordons Road would continue and was expected to be completed early next year.

Friendship doubles the joy Andrea Williams is overjoyed to be in the business of making friends with strangers. The volunteer Do Care worker has spent 11 years visiting elderly people to brighten their days. ‘‘I get more out of it than they do – I love the company,’’ she says. Mrs Williams, 64, is enjoying a new friendship with Margaret Chander, 82, of Mill Park. ‘‘I love the company of older people. I like their stories,’’ she said. The pair meets once a week for lunch or an outing. Do Care, which is part of Wesley Mission, needs volunteers in Epping, Bundoora, Lalor and Doreen, according to spokeswoman Imogen Baratta. ‘‘All that’s required is one to two hours a week of conversation and friendship,’’ she says. Crisis escalating for secondary students THOUSANDS of teenagers in Mernda and Doreen will vie for fewer than 1500 places at nearby secondary schools within 10 years, according to Yan Yean MLA Danielle Green. The booming suburbs, where the population rose 575 per cent in the five years to 2011, has no state secondary school. Ms Green said by 2021 more than 7000 students in Doreen and Mernda would need secondary education. A site in Cookes Road, Doreen, bought by the former Labor government for a secondary school, is now the Doreen primary school. Ms Green said parents would have to drive students to schools in other suburbs or pay private school fees. ‘‘They will have to travel on our already clogged roads,’’ she said. ‘‘The government refuses to build a secondary school in Doreen or Mernda, and we need a secondary school yesterday.’’ She said the number of children aged 10 to 19 in Doreen and Mernda had

increased more than five times from 443 in 2006 to 2285 in 2011, and it was forecast to reach 5000 in four years and more than 7000 in 2021. Education Department spokeswoman Megan McNaught said the department monitored population data and student enrolments in growth areas. ‘‘The department has plans for a number of schools in growth corridors and has been working with local councils, the Growth Areas Authority and developers to ensure land is set aside for education provision,’’ she said. Council candidate Nicola Davis said: ‘‘Families tell me they will be forced to move closer to the city and secondary schools and give up their greener lifestyle in Whittlesea. ‘‘For those who stay, we will be looking at Plenty Road and Yan Yean Road becoming a parking lot with the thousands of kids who will need bussing and driving to schools.’’ – Sue Hewitt

impose massive rate hikes when the land had been earmarked as a future growth area but had not rezoned to residential 1. Planning Minister Matthew Guy said the former Labor Government included Wollert in the urban growth boundary in 2010. He signalled the brakes had been put on development in Wollert. ‘‘Any precinct structure plans approved in the northern growth corridor by the current government have occurred with an intention for those areas to have development commence soon. Wollert is not one of these areas,’’ he said. ‘‘Council rates are a matter for local councils, not the state government. Councils should be mindful of their rate decisions upon local residents. Council spokesman Gino Mitrione said the 2010 amendment to the Whittlesea planning scheme made Wollert an urban growth zone and council ‘‘legally bound’’ to value properties under the new zone.

BY SUE HEWITT A DEVELOPER who paid a reported $26 million for a Wollert farm says smaller neighbouring properties are not all ‘‘goldmines’’. Nick Deed, a director of Greencor, said most of the hobby farms being hit with massive rate rises after their land was revalued as part of a future urban growth area were not ripe for development. He said some Wollert properties were not ready for development because they were too small or the owners were asking unrealistic prices and land had yet to be rezoned to the plum residential 1 zone. He said it would cost developers tens of millions of dollars and several years to bring infrastructure to the entire area. ‘‘It’s zoned (for) urban growth but they are asking prices as if it was zoned residential 1,’’ he said. Wollert residents are protesting over rate rises of between 40 and 260 per cent, including one property for which rates rose 125 per cent – from

$3551 to $8012. Greencor bought a 57-hectare farm at Bodycoats Road with the potential to be subdivided into 900 lots, for $26 million with a catch — it is to be paid over eight years. Mr Deed said many properties were too small, not on a main road or had adjoining neighbours who had no intention of selling. He questioned council’s decision to

Possum magic inspires a decade of care SCOTT Patterson has played ‘‘mum’’ to thousands of injured native animals at the wildlife shelter in his Mill Park home. But there is one critter closest to his heart. It is the joey he found standing by its mother, whose legs were trapped in a barbed wire fence in Epping. ‘‘The little one was calling out to her mum and trying to climb back into her pouch but the mother was trapped upside down,’’ he said. ‘‘She was my first eastern grey kangaroo, and once you raise one there’s nothing like it, they bond with you. They learn from you. Violet, as we called her, had just opened her eyes when we found her and she took to me as her mum. ‘‘She’d follow me around the backyard and come to work at the Diamond Valley Veterinary Hospital.’’ Violet was released into a mob of roos in the bush a few years ago, and Mr Patterson still sees her. Patterson’s passion for animal care began at the age of 12 when he found an

orphaned possum on the roadside and nursed it back to health. ‘‘I have always been passionate about wildlife rehabilitation,’’ said the 24-year-old veterinary nurse who set up the Katandra Wildlife Shelter at home 10 years ago. ‘‘My mum and dad supported me to set up the shelter. There’s the cost of food like special baby (wildlife) formulas and fruit and electricity, and raising a joey costs $1000 a year and a possum is about $150 a year, but when you care for up to 40 orphaned baby possums at

a time, it adds up.’’ He blamed cats for many injuries to wildlife. ‘‘Cats’ teeth are sharp and full of bacteria and puncture the little organs inside animals like baby possums, and 98 per cent of cat attack victims die,’’ he said. Mr Patterson, the City of Whittlesea’s 2008 Young Citizen of the Year, has cared for all kinds of animals. The green tree frogs ‘‘hitch hike’’ rides with fruit from Queensland and cannot be released into Victoria’s bush, so are the shelter’s permanent residents.

I’m baffled that our governments (at federal, state or local levels) do not take the opportunity of elections to include direct polling of voters’ views and priorities on prevailing key issues. Surely there is no better opportunity to get a true snapshot of community views than when the entire eligible voting population actually gets to have its say. I expect it would be more accurate than random sampling by pollsters. It would address concerns that issues may have been misrepresented or hijacked by personal bias, vocal minorities and interest groups.

Probus, founded by Rotary, was established in the UK in the 1960s and rapidly spread worldwide. The clubs are for older members of the community who no longer work full-time. The regular meetings and activities enable them to expand their interests and make new friends. Wardell knows of two people who lived three doors apart, but hadn’t met before the Mernda Probus meeting. Activities include dinners, walking, coffee and card groups, book clubs and outings to events such as the theatre. Wardell says the City of Whittlesea has come on board, keen to support the establishment of local community organisations such as Probus and Scouts. Property group Lend Lease has also been involved, as “they want people to be happy in the area”, Wardell says. ■ The second Mernda Probus meeting is at 1pm on Monday, October 22, at Mernda Village Community Activity Centre, 70 Mernda Village Drive, Mernda. Details: call Ern Wardell 0417 363 181.

hen Diamond Creek Rotary established a Probus club in Doreen this year, membership instantly hit the 85 limit. A further 15 keen locals went on to the waiting list. Such was the success of this new club for active seniors that staff at Mernda Community Centre suggested there might be similar demand in Mernda. There was. A key organiser of the Mernda Probus group, Ern Wardell (pictured), says 33 people attended the inaugural meeting, many of them from Doreen’s waiting list. “By the end of the day we had a core group of people who had put their hand up to form the committee,’’ he says. Wardell, a Rotary member for 20 years, club historian and a past president, agrees the northern corridor was in desperate need of a group such as Probus. “I gather there are about 50 per cent young people and 50 per cent retirees in the area, similar to Doreen,” he says. “People move to the area from Diamond Creek, Eltham and Greensborough, where they’ve had large hilly blocks, then move to be closer to their grandchildren.”

COVERSTORY

It’s

time Still going strong after 153 years, the Whittlesea show continues to show city slickers how it’s done. By Sue Hewitt

H

ector appears to be an animal designed by a feuding committee. The bickering members chose the long neck of a hill-tribe ‘‘giraffe’’ woman, the knock knees of a gangly teenager and the nuggety body of a fattened sheep. Marilyn Monroe eyes peep from under thick John Howard eyebrows. The combined effect is so ugly, it’s cute. Don’t be fooled; this alpaca’s manners are atrocious. He spits and kicks and has been known to pick up small dogs in his mouth and run them off his “nursery”. Hector is a guard alpaca; his farmyard role is to protect crossbreed sheep and he takes his job seriously, especially when it comes to his “babies”, the lambs. Hector thinks he is the star of the upcoming Whittlesea Agricultural Society Show. But he has stiff competition ranging from showgirls to show ponies. At the show, Hector and his master, John Greer, will watch over their display flock. They’ve been doing it for years, showing off newborn lambs and their mothers. It’s hard to know who’s more maternal, Hector or the ewes. “They are his lambs,” says Greer, 62, who bought the beast in 2000 specifically to guard sheep. ‘‘The ewes leave their lambs with him and go for a feed. It’s Hector’s nursery.’’ While Hector is a protector, Greer’s wife, Anne, 58, is a guardian of show tradition. The annual event started 153 years ago, when the local farmers set up a country fair. Anne’s late father, Les Batten, was Whittlesea show president in the 1950s and pioneered the Wool Corporation’s fleece displays and wool garment fashion parades at the Royal Melbourne Show. him a BEM. ‘‘Officially it means the British Empire Medal for services to the Wool Corporation, but we (the family) reckon it means ‘Behind Every Merino’,’’ Anne says. Her father was a true man of the land. ‘‘He told us if he died in a paddock, we should drink champagne because ‘it will be the best day of my life’. He did and we did,’’ she says. The Whittlesea family’s celebration of rural life continues, although husband and wife work regular day jobs to support their farm. “My greatgrandfather settled Whittlesea in the late 1840s,” says Anne. “My father was a past show president, my (late) mother and I are both life stewardesses of the show. ‘‘It’s always been a country show and that’s why we love it – it’s a little world unto its own.’’ She has been a judge of the Whittlesea showgirl competition, which ranges from Tiny Tot (girls aged four to six) through to Miss Whittlesea (13- to 17-year-olds). The winner gets a nominal prize but it is the showgirl sash that is keenly sought. ‘‘The girls don’t come prepared – they come in their ordinary clothes, see there’s the showgirl competition and go in it,” Anne says. “They look like normal little kids and they grow up through the ranks really enjoying it.’’

It is the horse events that see the make-up, wigs, bling and more come out. Lyn Lee is the show’s junior vice-president and horse supervisor, who looks after hundreds of competitors, including showjumping and light harness horses, and breeds such as palomino, Arabian, Clydesdale and miniature ponies. She pulls out a large suitcase with numerous compartments to share the equine beauty secrets. A make-up artist at a wedding would blush comparing their tools. There’s touch-up paint – white to enhance white socks or a forehead star; black for around the muzzle and eyes; deeper, shinier black for the hooves; and dark ‘‘eyeliner’’ to make those ‘‘come hither’’ brown eyes more intense. Manes and tails are plaited and groomed to perfection. But that’s not the end. What about a tail toupee, attached at the end of the plait to make the ends fluffier? Coats must be perfect, rubbed down so they shine and dusted with hairspray before the final touches are applied. A small, fine comb is used to create a chequerboard pattern in the coat over the beast’s rump, using alternating right-angled strokes. Checkmate. The most glamorous horse wins. Such painstaking grooming is essential for show ponies such as Newington Rumours, a gelding born of a mare called Gossip. Better known as Paddy, he is the pride and joy of 12-year-old Brynie Lee, daughter of Lyn. You can tell he’s a show pony by the way he lifts his feet, deliberately and delicately as if afraid he will step in something unsavoury but is too polite to mention it. His chestnut chiselled features are topped with a diamantestudded headdress. Lyn Lee’s youngest daughter, Ebonie, 10, rides a chunkier Welsh ‘‘hunter’’ pony who can take a jump without worrying it’s going to muss his hair and won third at the Royal Adelaide Show’s under 12 hands class. Ah, but he did wear a tail extension. The events at Whittlesea include the unsual: Bilby boot throwing, eggand-spoon races, bread waiters’ race, and a wearable fashion competition using stuff found in farmyards, such as chaff bags. The most Aussie event is the dunny-building competition, with entrants given 90 minutes to build the best bog on site. When it comes to outback dunnies, John Leaford is a tough judge. A hardware store once entered, using you-beaut tools and materials to make a luxury outdoor bog, only to fail on a technicality. ‘‘If you use modern materials you can forget about it,’’ Leaford says. ‘‘We’re looking for a dunny that could have been built 100 years ago from materials that were scrounged.’’ If the dunny has a bit of a lean, all the better. Regular entrant John Greer thought he was a shoo-in with a dunny made from a hollow tree trunk. He even had a pair of gumboots sticking out from under the door to show it was occupied. The dunny was judged too small. Apparently, a young visitor to the show though it was fine. When someone tried to open the door, a small voice called out, “I’m in here!” – or so the story goes. The cooking competitions are another big attraction. Those who can follow a strict recipe can win the $15 blue ribbon in the ‘‘Senior Rich Fruit Cake’’ category. But the big money in cakes is for the two-tier decorated wedding cake, with a $41 prize. This year, the show will host the coveted Victorian 350mm underhand woodchopping championship, with a $325 first prize. Local lad Michael Meyers is competing. He comes from a long line of axemen – the Meyers family boasts 18 active axemen and claims to be the biggest woodchopping family in the southern hemisphere. The showgrounds, at the foot of the Kinglake Ranges, have a main arena and an unruly collection of buildings thrown up over the years on the road to the mountain. In 2009, Black Saturday survivors fled down that road and sought sanctuary at the showgrounds. British Alpine goat breeder, Raye Carter, 68, wasn’t so lucky. She died when she returned to her St Andrews property to release her herd into a paddock. Most of the goats and their kids survived. Raye Carter’s legacy lives on. Adam Fontana, the show’s goat supervisor, has one of the goats that escaped the blaze. Kumala Wynette – named after Mrs Carter’s stud Kumala and her middle name – won the top award for the breed (second lactation or goats over three years old) at the Royal Melbourne Show. ‘‘Raye used to organise the dairy goats at the Whittlesea Show, but it’s slowed down a lot in the past 10 years,’’ he says. At 32, Fontana has embraced the country show and will keep British Alpine breeding alive in the district for many years to come. ■ The Whittlesea Show will be held at the showgrounds on Yea Road on November 3 and 4. anted: Someone to go back in time with me. This is not a joke. You’ll get paid after we get back. Must bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed. I have only done this once before.” A bizarre and intriguing classified ad in a small-town newspaper kickstarts Safety Not Guaranteed, a late candidate for 2012’s most endearing film. Miserable college graduate Darius

(Aubrey Plaza, whom Parks and Recreation fans will recognise as April) is an intern at Seattle Magazine. When journalist Jeff (Jake Johnson) stumbles across the classified ad, editor Bridget (Mary Lynn Rajskub) sends him to the town of Ocean View to track down who placed it. Jeff takes Darius and fellow intern Arnau (Karan Soni) along for the ride; but his ulterior motive is soon revealed as he announces his plans to rekindle romance with his teenage fling Liz (Jenica Bergere), who lives in the town. With their boss preoccupied with his love life, Darius and Arnau take matters into their own hands and track down the man responsible for the ad with some handy detective work.

Kenneth (the film’s co-producer, Mark Duplass) is an eccentric and paranoid loner who is deadly serious about science and time travel but sceptical of anyone who offers to join his mission. Darius gradually manages to win his trust and before long, Kenneth accepts her as his time travel partner, letting her in on some of his secrets. Beautifully scripted by Derek Connolly (who won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance), Safety not Guaranteed is a funny but touching tale of isolation, regret and friendship. It reaches a crescendo with a truly gripping final 20 minutes that will leave you sitting in silence, pondering what you’ve just seen.

Robert Menzies is Prime Minister, Ken Rosewall wins the first of four Australian Open crowns, Robert Doyle and John Brumby enter the world and Federal Parliament passes the Television Act, in preparation for the launch of mainstream TV three years later. In the UK, a fresh-faced chap named David Attenborough presents his first natural history series, The Pattern of Animals, filmed at London Zoo. Fast forward to 2012. Menzies, the country’s longest-serving prime minister has been dead almost 25 years ago, Rosewall’s career prize money of $1.6 million looks a pittance, Brumby is a former premier, Doyle is Melbourne’s lord mayor and delevision is now digital. Oh, and Attenborough is still presenting natural history series. Some things never change.

An outspoken artist always up for taking potshots at others, Zimmerman also bashes DJs and dance music at will, including himself. As refreshing an approach as this is, you really do have to back it up with the goods, and that’s where his latest offering doesn’t quite hit the mark. Oscillating wildly between bone-crunching beats and floaty Europoplite offerings that warble about “the world the children made” on Chris James’ collaboration The Veldt, it’s as jarring as it is foot-stompy. In 1979, the Englishman presented the landmark series Life on Earth. The 13-part series traced evolution and was watched by about 500 million people worldwide. It featured one of the most memorable moments in TV history, when Attenborough found himself face to face with a female gorilla in Rwanda and delivered an unscripted speech to camera

about the ‘‘meaning and mutual understanding’’ between gorillas and humans. Attenborough’s programs have always been stunningly shot, but technological advancements make his most recent work truly mind-blowing. This year, his 60th in broadcasting, Attenborough presented his first program in 3D. However Kingdom of Plants, which starts on ABC1 this weekend, in standard ol’ 2D format, does its best to persuade us that plants are just as thrilling as the animals he has worked with. Filmed over a year at London’s Kew Gardens – home to the world’s largest collection of living plants – the three-part series features the remarkable cinematography we’ve come to expect from Attenborough. The 86-year-old crawls along the ground as he points out the venus flytrap, and we see creepy footage of a beetle becoming its victim. As always, the timelapse footage is superb. The man himself may scoff at being called a living treasure, but Attenborough’s work speaks for itself. ABC1, Sunday, 7.30pm

By Kerry Greenwood Allen and Unwin Phryne Fisher is back, and frankly, since the television series has been off our screens for some months, not before time. Unnatural Habits has the redoubtable Miss Fisher hunting the mysterious disappearance of several young girls, all but one heavily pregnant. On the way, with the help of her unconventional ‘‘family’’, she takes on the Catholic Church, tangles with pirates and solves the romantic problems of a particularly stupid scion of the aristocracy. Not to mention clearing up the mystery of who is performing unwelcome vasectomies on some of the less-than-admirable characters in the book. Yes, that’s right, unwelcome vasectomies. So the usual busy fortnight for Miss Fisher, then. If this is your first Phryne Fisher novel, jump on board, you’ll love the ride. If you are already a fan, welcome back to the thrilling Miss Fisher’s adventures. — Jan Fisher

Seeking alternatives A change is as good as a holiday when it comes to wine, writes Ben Thomas

S

Their stats show that women, in particular, are switching from sav blanc to pinot grigio at a rapid rate. I reckon they’re missing a trick by moving straight to grigio, a wine that can be utterly refreshing and delicious but is also capable of true blandness. Closer to sav blanc in style, but with more complexity, are the highly aromatic grapes riesling and gewürztraminer. Albarino from the north of Spain and the Italian pair fiano and vermentino are also worth seeking. Medium-bodied textural whites: If you’re like me and keep reaching for the chardonnay, a white from France’s Rhône Valley or a barrelfermented pinot gris makes a nice change. Wines such as chardonnay and the Rhône triumvirate, marsanne, roussanne and viognier, are generally fermented and aged in oak barrels, which helps impart texture and fine tannins. Light-to-medium reds: I’ll agree that pinot noir is a wine you’re unlikely to ever tire of, but the vibrant gamay is a delicious alternative. It’s the grape in Beaujolais, a relatively inexpensive light red when compared with its pinot noir-

Medium-to-full-bodied reds: Substitute grenache or mourvedre for a shiraz – or a blend of all three in a GSM – or a tempranillo-based wine from Spain’s Rioja region next time you’re thinking about shiraz. Rutherglen durif is also a good thing for those who like their shiraz from the bigger end of town. There’s another option, too. And that’s to stick with your favourite wines but look further afield. If Barossa shiraz is your poison, try a bottle from Bendigo or Heathcote – regions that will deliver the depth of flavour that you find in the Barossa. And, finally, now that the days are getting longer and the weather warming, think pink. tuck in a wine rut? Is shiraz losing its allure? Do you stick with sav blanc but secretly desire something new? Well, do I have a column for you. I’ve had a few friends ask me recently to recommend alternative wines to their regulars. The world of wine can be intimidating at times, and when you’re spending upwards of $20 on a bottle, it’s easy to play it safe than take a risk. Rather than recommend a few obscure grape varieties, there are plenty of mainstream ones that are similar to what you may default to every time you pour a glass. As a rule of thumb, wine can be categorised into distinct styles, crisp and light-bodied whites, medium-bodied textural whites, light-tomedium reds and medium-to-full-bodied reds. Crisp and light-bodied whites: Sauvignon blanc is the most popular white wine variety in the country, but if my sav-loving friends are any guide, it won’t hold that mantle forever. They’re all looking for alternatives. Major retailers have evidence that shows they’re not alone.

Home-grown for Bundoora Might-have-been premiers swing inward for answers this season. By Daniel Paproth

ahead of the 2012/13 season. Bundoora took a different route during the off-season, preferring to rely on players who had been with the club for years rather than chase recruits from other clubs. Benn Taplin, 35, who played juniors with Bundoora, is back at the club as playing coach and will bat in the top order. He will be aided by Andrew Fairchild, 25, who steps up as captain this season. He is being moulded for the coaching role as part of a succession plan. “We’ve found that our best results from the people in charge have come from people who have an intimate knowledge of the club and understand what it’s about,” Dean says. “I myself coached the club for three years and with the amount of work that you put in, I found that three years is the ideal timeframe. “After that, your message tends to get a bit stale and repetitive so that’s why we have the succession plan for Andrew to take over from Benn. “That would make it four of the past five

coaches who have started with us in under 12s and gone on to coach the club. “We’re pretty proud of that and we think it’s the right way to go.” Aside from the coaching change, the only other loss Bundoora has had is Sri Lankan bowler Kande Premakumara, who took 16 wickets at 14.1 last season. He was part of a former club policy by which Bundoora brought Sri Lankans over to play for the club. But with a focus on home-grown talent, Dean says the club has chosen not to continue with Sri Lankan players this season. “He was an outstanding bowler, but with a couple of our young guys coming up we think we’re strong enough to stand on our own two feet and create some more opportunities for our own players,’’ Dean says. As for himself, “I’ve been told I’m getting picked in A grade this season, so we’ll see how we go,” he says, laughing. “You’re a long time retired, I suppose, and I’ve got the blessing from home.” ■

ome-grown is the theme at Bundoora Cricket Club this season as it tries to atone for its unceremonious semi-final exit last season. Playing in the Diamond Valley Cricket Association’s top-flight Barclay Shield, Bundoora finished on top of the ladder after the regular season last summer, winning seven of its 11 matches. The side rolled Lower Eltham for 174 in the first innings and was 1/77 chasing the total but suffered a batting collapse, losing 9/55 to be all out for 132. Lower Eltham went on to win the title that Bundoora was confident of taking out. Club president Brad Dean, who took 5/30 in that game, says it was a disappointing end to a season that promised so much. “It was a bitter pill to swallow,” Dean says. “We went into the finals full of confidence and did everything right – apart from about 15 or 20 overs with the bat, and that cost us the game.” However, the players have renewed hope

MOTORING

Ro, ro, ro your boat The highly precise art of roll on-roll off car transportation

ROD EASDOWN BEHIND THE WHEEL n a park with a view down to the White Bay docks in Sydney, I once sat fascinated as a couple of crews unloaded a car freighter. It was a tightly choreographed logistical dance. A minivan emerged from the ship followed by eight cars. The first parked in its designated spot on the dock and the driver climbed out and closed the door. Then the next car came in close on its right, so close that it would have been impossible for the first driver to get out had he not already done so. Then that driver got out, the next car pulled in beside it and so on. When all eight cars were in place, the drivers got into the minivan to be taken back into the bowels of the ship for the next

I

round. With a couple of minivans running, it was remarkable how quickly the cars started massing on the dock. But what I’d seen was only a small part of the delicate and precise art of moving a lot of cars from one country to another. And there’s no question about it being an art. These ships have height-adjustable decks, each raised about 10 centimetres clear of the tallest car below them, which means vehicles of the same height share common decks; cars on one, SUVs and four-wheel-drives on another and vans and trucks on still others. And they’re parked even more carefully than on the dock to get the maximum number of vehicles in the minimum possible space. It’s not just a matter of parking them in a sequence to allow just 15 centimetres between the sides of each car (their wing mirrors folded against the body) and 30 centimetres nose to tail – the crews tying them down also have to work in a precise sequence so they can access the underside of each car before it’s blocked off by other cars around it.

Parking them so close has an added benefit – if a car breaks its shackles and starts rolling, it will only damage the cars immediately around it, rather than taking out the whole deck. Such incidents are rare these days, not just because the cars are so securely tethered, but because the ships go out of their way to avoid bad weather. It’s not unusual for shipping companies to allow a day’s leeway in each schedule. At destination comes the unlashing and removal, deck by deck. The big specialist ships, called ‘‘ro-ros’’ because the cars roll on and roll off under their own power, can transport up to 8500 vehicles at a time on up to 13 deck levels. They look for all the world like big shoeboxes and they’re unlikely to get any bigger than they are, or they won’t be able to fit through the Panama and Suez canals. ■

A good fit for a family Nothing has been left to chance at this Mernda property

STEPHEN A RUSSELL PROPERTY WRITER et on a well-kept, tree-lined street in a quiet Mernda estate, this handsome three-bedroom family home is a contemporary classic. A pebble pathway, surrounded by neatly groomed gardens resplendent in green and deep purple, leads to the wooden-framed front door with glass panels allowing a warm, amber hue to spill outwards. Inside, a broad hallway finished in pale Tasmanian oak runs right through the heart

S

of this attractive residence. Two double doors on the left swing open to a luxuriously proportioned main bedroom, with thick, latte-coloured carpet and two broad windows that look over the garden. A dramatic flocked wallpaper feature wall in shimmering gold and blue-tinted silver creates a stunning backdrop. An enormous walk-in wardrobe opens to a gorgeous en suite. It features large, chocolatecoloured tiles and a pale stone vanity that provides a plinth for two ceramic white bowls resting in front of a large mirror. The huge shower is a treat for those who like a good soak in the morning. Across the hallway from this peaceful retreat, through another set of tall double doors, is a room that could be a spare bedroom, a generous home office or study, or even a theatre room. Along further, the passage gives way to an open-plan formal lounge and dining area,

with French doors that open out to a pleasant courtyard surrounded by greenery. This space has direct access to the oversized garage. Across the way, a good-sized laundry offers side yard access via patio doors and has a roomy linen closet. The open-plan living space to the rear dominates this property, with a beautiful, wellequipped kitchen sitting on the internal wall. It’s as slick as you please, finished with Caesarstone benchtops, plenty of cabinets and a hefty 900mm Technika oven with five-burner stovetop. A large corner pantry adds storage space. Three pendant lights hang over a broad breakfast bar, the ideal spot to sip your morning espresso over the papers. The house also has a generous meals area that leads to an expansive family room at the rear of the property.

Windows all around ensure there’s no shortage of warm, natural light. Running along the rear left-hand side of the property are two further bedrooms at either end of a separate hallway, both with built-in wardrobes. Between the pair sits an immaculate main bathroom with glass-enclosed shower and a separate bath. A powder room is tucked in next door. A highlight of the property, and a feature that will excite families particularly, is the outdoor space. There’s a courtyard on the right, swinging round the corner to a generous lawn area across the rear of the house. The rewards are not only within the property’s boundary. The street is surrounded by open grasslands and there are barbecue facilities, schools and supermarket close by. This is a property that offers the accommodation, style and features for practical and enjoyable family life. ■
