o one was really surprised when Gabi became the target of a sophisticated international crime gang, least of all my gal pal herself. Gabs is the kind of person who can be wandering along minding her own business when out of nowhere a herd of wildebeest will appear and stampede towards her. She has the equanimity of someone completely accustomed to chaos. When Gabs calmly climbs down out of the nearest tree and you ask how on earth such a thing could possibly happen to her – or indeed anyone several continents away from the African veld – she’ll reply: “I dunno, just lucky I guess.” So it was when, on a recent visit to Melbourne, she went to withdraw some money from her bank account and noticed a major discrepancy. Gabs didn’t panic. In 48 hours her card was skimmed of $2600 – the money having been withdrawn from five locations across Sydney’s south-west while she explored Melbourne’s lanes. Turns out she had used her card at one of at least 15 ATMs targeted by specialist Romanian gangs who travel the world skimming the accounts of hapless single mums and dental nurses. Romanian organised crime gangs have targeted Australia many times, flying in on legitimate visas. Other known fly-in-fly-out criminals include teams of Irish conmen who pose as legitimate tradies,

then charge home owners grossly inflated prices for substandard “work”. If this is the kind of person we not only welcome, but rubber-stamp, why do we insist on demonising the poor desperate beggars trying to reach our shores in boats? According to the federal government’s own figures, there are at least 50,000 people living in Australia illegally after overstaying visas. They have paid for their airline tickets and entered the country legally, then deliberately and calculatedly broken the rules. Those men, women and children who climb aboard unseaworthy death traps have broken no laws, nor are

Rock the boat: Discover the true extent of “our sickening, politically manufactured crisis’’.

they seeking to deceive us. They are out there waving their arms and crying for help. To see yet another Australian federal election degenerate into a race to the bottom of the ocean on the issue of asylum-seekers is way more than depressing. When politicians talk about our “porous borders”, what they really mean is borders to the poor. They are appealing to our basest nature on a question that won’t make an iota of difference to the quality of the average Australian’s life. According to the latest UNHCR figures, 45.2 million people were in situations of displacement at the end of last year including 15.4 million refugees, 937,000 asylum-seekers and 28.8 million people forced to flee within the borders of their own countries. During 2012, some 7.6 million people became newly displaced, 1.1 million crossing borders as refugees and 6.5 million as internally displaced people. This translates to more than 20,000 people around the world forced to flee their homes every single day. Put in an Australian context, that’s 4000 more people displaced around the world on any given day than asylum-seekers arrive on our shores during the entire year. For that is the true extent of our cynical, sickening, politically manufactured “boat people crisis”. I

t’s a single moment at the end of every day that David Baber looks forward to the most. Each night he reads a story and tucks his son Willem, 5, into bed. “He sinks into me every night and I melt inside,” he says. “There aren’t many times when I’m the favourite over mum because he loves his mum so much, but when it comes time to go to bed he reaches out to me and we read until he falls asleep.” Baber says his son, who was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth, has taught him and his wife Abi more in his five years in the world than they could have imagined. “When we were told Willem had Down syndrome, there is no doubt we were in shock,” he says. “What you are told at that point is how difficult everything is going to be. It was my inclination to retreat back into myself as I struggled to comprehend what this would mean.” But with his wife’s gentle encouragement and the strength he sought from other families who had children with Down syndrome, the Kensington father’s relentless and unwavering love for his son has eased him onto the road of acceptance. “Five years later I have a boy in my life whom I love and who causes warmth deep inside me,” he says. “It was a hard road to this point and a hard road ahead. What has happened in between to get me to this point is the inspiration and love from his mother, his siblings, our closest friends and other wonderful families that travel this road too.” It is Willem’s openness and his ability to enjoy

every moment that Baber adores most about his son. Everywhere they go, people are drawn to Willem. “Despite not being able to speak at this stage, Willem has the ability to engage with people on different levels. They are drawn to him, and his personality shines through,” he says. “Despite the frustration of being at the age of five heading to six and not being able to verbally communicate, Willem reaches out to other children and he reaches out to adults, and he engages so wonderfully.” Baber says that while Willem’s milestones are different to those of his siblings Finley, 7, and Imogen, 2, they fill his heart with just as much joy. “As a parent you feel worried for other siblings growing up with somebody with special needs,” he says. “But that worry soon dissipates when you see the engagement and love between them. We are so proud of Finley. He understands Willem has special needs but he doesn’t treat him any differently.” Baber is in a group of fathers across Melbourne who share their experiences in a new book called Dad’s Stories, Reflections on Fathers and Fathering. pening a new restaurant at a time when some businesses are closing and the way we eat out is changing may seem crazy. But when that new suburban restaurant is owned and operated by a skilled and experienced chef, it seems like a logical piece in an inner-west jigsaw has just been placed. It makes sense. Union Food & Wine is by chef Stuart McVeigh, who was head chef at No. 35 in the city’s Sofitel. He has trained in London, notably at the three-star Michelin restaurant Pied à Terre with chef Shane Osborn, and has brought a very smart eatery to Union Road, Ascot Vale. McVeigh has lived in Ascot Vale for 11 years and wanted to create a good neighbourhood bistro – a place to go on nights you may not feel like cooking, but yearn for some good food and well-crafted flavours. That’s exactly what he’s created in Union Food & Wine. Four entrées, mains and desserts is how McVeigh has structured his menu in a room that still feels new (it opened August 1). Flexibility is important in dining out, and McVeigh offers it with a snack board that includes a pork terrine to share or barbecued octopus, chargrilled and served in a small pot with a thick garlicky skordalia. Perhaps it’s McVeigh’s nod to the popularity of Greek food, or just nice to enjoy with an aperitif. It works. The waiters are friendly, talking through the dishes and answering questions; while they may not always know the answers, they find them out quickly. We start with an elegant entrée of beetroot-cured king salmon with blood orange, avocado and mustard vinaigrette. Carefully placed thick slices of the fish are served next to spoonfuls of smooth avocado purée and the bitey vinaigrette gives it some punch on the palate. A caramelised onion tart is a study in balance. A crisp disc of well-cooked puff pastry is dolloped with the jammy onion and topped with a round of good rich goat’s cheese from Yarra Valley Dairy. It’s all scattered with rocket leaves and finished with a dousing of vincotto. The earthy goat’s cheese is set against the rich onion and the syrupy vincotto, which plays its own role as a sweet foil to the savoury characters. The braised duck with orange, cracked wheat and spices – fennel, coriander seed and black pepper – arrives on an earthenware dish. The meat on the leg is cooked to a tenderness that melds with the Middle-Eastern flavours. The grainy addition of cracked wheat fits the flavour profiles, and a luscious date purée, thick like a paste, is intense in its fruity caramel edge. It’s good but the best, we discover is yet to come. McVeigh has a great knack of rounding out a dish; of taking a main component, allowing it to stand out but making each ingredient so important you can’t imagine it not being there. He’s economical and thoughtful in his compositions and this is realised in his wild barramundi with mushroom purée, brioche and black cabbage. Barramundi is in season now – each year it runs from March to October – and this fine specimen has come in from the Northern Territory. McVeigh cooks it just right. It arrives at the table, a thick fillet with a crunchy brioche crust and translucent flesh. Fish can be hard to get right in a restaurant because

the flesh continues to cook once off the heat, but it’s clear McVeigh knows how to manage this. He accompanies the succulent flesh with a mushroom purée, a well-pitched baritone to the barramundi’s tenor. It strikes a subtley delicious chord that is given broader reach with savoury black cabbage. From the side dishes we choose a salad of witlof and fennel with watercress, providing a fresh, crisp bite. The drinks list is succinct but broad in its choices. Wines from New Zealand, Australia and Europe grace the selection together with smart craft beers. There are a handful by the glass, which is how we choose to order. A glass of 2010 Denis Pommier Petit Chablis is a great match with our entrées and we swiftly move to a glass of Winbirra Pinot Noir 2010 from the Mornington Peninsula to finish off the onion tart and try with the mains. A glass of 2008 The Met Shiraz is a surprisingly good match with the fish. Seasonal choices continue into dessert and we contemplate warm prune and walnut frangipane with poached quince and honey and walnut ice-cream, but a chocolate pave comes up trumps. McVeigh uses Valrhona chocolate infused with vanilla and combines it with cream to produce a milky chocolate finish, then serves it with burnt-orange syrup and candied cumquats. Its creamy, citrus characters are not too sweet, giving the meal a balanced finish. While opening a restaurant may be mad, when you have the skill of a chef like McVeigh and choose to serve good food at great prices, well, it seems quiet sane. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

Father’s Day can mean different things to different people. For many it’s a chance to spoil their father figure with lavish gifts and openly show affection towards them for all they have done. For others, the first Sunday in September represents the opportunity to acknowledge and thank their ‘fathers’ for being who they are, without the fanfare. My earliest memory of Father’s Day was the former. I remember being shuffled off to primary school with a couple of dollars in my pocket to ‘secretly’ buy Dad the ‘gift of a lifetime’. Each year my primary school held a Father’s Day market with gifts such as socks, jocks and ashtrays on sale. After weighing up the pros and cons of socks vs jocks, I would scurry home and hide the gift under my bed until the day came when I could present Dad with his new pair of Bonds underwear. A family dinner

with my grandparents would follow, in what was always a big and exciting day for the whole family. As I have grown and matured my Father’s Day experience has been more low-key. While the hype has somewhat gone out of the day in comparison to my earlier years, the sentiment remains the same. As two grown men, a simple ‘Happy Father’s Day’ is now enough to remind my Dad just how much I appreciate the sacrifices he made when raising me. Despite its title, Father’s Day isn’t just for the fathers out there. For many, a father is any male figure that provides guidance in their life - a grandfather, uncle, step-father or even a sports coach. So, on September 1, remind your father figure of the important role they play in your life. I would like to wish my dad, grandfather and all the other fathers reading this a happy Father’s Day.
