MURPHY’s LORE

ALAN Murphy \ community views need to be heard

F

lemington and Ascot Vale residents want to be in the loop for the planning of high density residential redevelopment beside Flemington racecourse, which includes a land sale between the Victoria Racing Club and developers Greenland. Responding to a query at public question time at the last Moonee Valley Council meeting, chief executive Neville Smith confirmed the council had been briefed by the VRC, Greenland and their consultants. We are told the council insisted on the need for early and “robust” community consultation. However Moonee Valley Council will not be the responsible authority for the planning application because the land is controlled by the state Minister for Planning, even though half of it is within Moonee Valley’s boundaries. So it is debatable how much notice, if any, will be taken of the community’s views. Those who have some detail of the proposal are concerned that the impact on

the community will be immense – 1200 apartments across two sites of 16 to 23 storeys. That will place huge pressure on local infrastructure. We certainly need to be heard. self-confidence in spades …

Bernie Finn, who represents the Western Metropolitan seat in the Legislative Council, thrives on controversy. Last week the Liberal MP weighed into the abortion debate saying he didn’t think there was “any acceptable reason for having an abortion”. That didn’t score him any brownie points with his boss, Premier Denis Napthine, who immediately distanced himself from comments on Mr Finn’s Facebook page. And rightly so. The former Melbourne radio producer, a Parliamentarian since 2006 after an earlier stint as Member for Tullamarine, is also known for having an abundance of self-confidence. In Parliament last month

he named Fred Ackerman, Rebecca Gauci Maurici and Jo Hagan as “the incoming Members for the Legislative Assembly seats of Essendon, Niddrie and Sunbury”. Hold on Mr Finn, the people get their say in November as to whether the Liberal-endorsed candidates for these seats will get in. The candidates themselves are probably a touch embarrassed and would not appreciate Mr Finn’s public endorsement of them so far out from the election. things are different up north …

It could only happen in Queensland, we often say. They do things differently up there. No more so than the case of 19 local councils, including Brisbane, that have been charging investors higher rates than owner-occupiers. The councils collect up to $300 million annually through higher rate charges. But investors in Mackay, who were paying an extra $200 a year for their rental

properties, took the council to court for an “improper exercise of power” under the local Government Act – and won. Thankfully there are no additional penalties for investors buying local property in Victoria. And no political party would legislate for it, unless they had a death wish. In Queensland, the Supreme Court decision will impact heavily on council revenues, which could lead to huge rate increases for all ratepayers – and worse if the landmark decision is made retrospective and councils have to return previously inflated levies to investors. The councils say they will now appeal the decision. Remember this is Queensland-style politics; the lawyers will again be the big winners of protracted court action. The final word …

Some of us long for immortality – then have no idea what to do on a rainy weekend. \

Back On Board

Cover Story HARI RAJ meets Olympic diver turned cabaret artist Matthew Mitcham

F

or someone who has spent much of his life in very visible forms of free fall, Matthew Mitcham has an admirable surfeit of confidence. There he is on the bottom of the next page, performing a minor feat of gymnastics while clad in scarcely more material than the average tea towel; suffice to say he is used to the public eye. When we talk, Mitcham sounds like someone in the tender thrall of a caffeine transfusion, which is unusual given that he’s only just emerged from a session in the pool. Now a senior member of Australia’s dive team, he is deep in preparation for July’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He is also enrolled at the University of Sydney, where he is in the process of completing a bachelor’s degree in arts and sciences with a major in linguistics. And, if that’s not enough, he’s also rehearsing for his cabaret show, which is making its Victorian debut at the upcoming Melbourne Cabaret Festival. The last bloke with this much on his shoulders went by the name of Atlas. “I want to have all of my cakes and eat them,” Mitcham says, laughing but swiftly turning serious. “I’m not quite ready to give up diving, but I’m also not prepared to put all of my life on hold until I finish diving, because then I think it would be too late to get started. I’m just doing as much as I think I’m able to do without burning myself out.” Not that Mitcham doesn’t know his limits – he had originally started uni life with a couple of blow-off subjects like molecular biology and genetics, but time in the lab meant too much time out of the pool. “I’ve always liked languages – actually, I think the deciding factor was that I quite epically failed the junior maths required to go into second-year science,” he says. Still, the Mitcham method for avoiding burnout involves waking up at 5am for his first training session, squeezing university work and stage or vocal rehearsals into the morning or early afternoon, and then another three-hour training session in the evening. Things are a little calmer now that preparations for the cabaret have been completed. Mitcham spent six days a week working on the show over the Christmas period after completing a tremendously successful crowdfunding campaign. He had set out to raise $3500, but ended up with $11,497; people clearly wanted to see this come to fruition. “I think that was a testament to the wonderful amount of support that I’ve got around the world,” Mitcham says. “Yes, it was a huge surprise, and it was hugely humbling. I think we’ve actually put together something really amazing with all of their help.” Matthew Mitcham OAM was born in 1988 in Brisbane. He never knew his father growing up, and had a complicated relationship with his mother; much of his time was spent in the company of a second-hand trampoline. A world junior trampoline champion, he was later spotted horsing around at a local pool by a scout who recognised his talent for diving. He juggled the two disciplines for a time, choosing the latter because it was an Olympic sport. Mitcham came out in an interview during the build-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. While the world alternately fussed about and applauded his honesty regarding his sexuality, Mitcham focused on becoming the first man ever to receive perfect-10 scores from four judges – and the highest single-dive score in Olympic history – on his way to claiming a gold medal. “After going through my teenage years not being entirely

comfortable with my identity, [I got to a point] where I didn’t want to feel that unease any more. I wanted to present myself more authentically, so I made this conscious decision as an 18-year-old to be really upfront and honest with everybody,” he says. “That then followed on into the public eye; the first big example was when I was profiled by a journalist leading into the Beijing Olympics. She asked me the question of who I lived with, and I answered it honestly, effectively coming out to the world just because I wanted to honour that authenticity and I wanted to be myself.” His profile soared at home and abroad, aided by his charm and affability. He continued to compete and represented Australia at the 2012 London Olympics, where he failed to qualify for the finals. He had had a run of injuries – including spinal stress fractures – that affected his form, but few people suspected he was dealing with a lot more until the release of his memoir. In Twists and Turns, published in 2012, Mitcham revealed that in his youth he had struggled with depression and substance abuse. These turned out to be recurring; in 2011 he started using methamphetamine, eventually overcoming his addiction with the help of Narcotics Anonymous and his family and friends. He has been nothing but open about his experiences, from being a young man who wore a rubber band around his wrist, just so he could snap it when he thought of boys, to self-harm that he says came out of shame. His cabaret show is based on his autobiography, its content indelibly intertwined with his personality. “I don’t really know anything about anything except myself, so the show is basically my story, but I use that story as a vehicle to talk about things that don’t get spoken about enough – my history of depression and how that partly manifested in my life through drug abuse and drug addiction,” Mitcham says.

B

ut it’s not all doom and gloom, he wants potential audiences to know. There are trampolines and ukuleles and Speedos, all the things that make him who he is, including his turbulent and frequently hilarious relationship with his mother – whom he affectionately dubs “totally bonkers”. We’ll avoid spoilers for the uninitiated, but accompanying him to Brisbane’s gay bars as a teenager is one of their least interesting escapades. “My mum loves it!” he says of her reaction. “I don’t think there were any revelations to any of the people who are close to me. But I normally hang around and talk to people after the show and they can’t believe the lunacy of some of the stuff that mum and I did when I was a child.” There are obvious merits to being open and honest about mental health and substance abuse issues. But reliving them over and over, committing them not just to perpetuity on page but also performances on stage, would seem to be a particularly jaunty form of waterboarding. Mitcham, however, feels the process is therapeutic. “It’s been a wonderful part of my recovery, actually,” he says. “During the couple of months that I was working really intensely on adapting this, I was coming home at the end of the day pretty cranky, actually, and I couldn’t figure out what it was. “It was my partner that helped me realise that I was spending all day immersed in what I felt were a lot of my faulty behaviours, my history that I was not very proud of.

“That realisation helped me turn it around and go, yes, drugs and alcohol are still part of my life every day, but now they’re in my life in a positive way because I’m speaking about this stuff. I’m helping other people, making it easier for other people to talk about these things, and I’m educating people, so it’s actually having a really positive effect on my life and other people’s lives as well.” Mitcham has called himself a “show pony” in the past, and trots out the description once again here. He says that element to his personality has always been there, and it manifests itself when he knows all eyes are on him. “The more prestigious the event, the more intense the pressure was, the better I seemed to perform because I thrive on the adrenalin. Transferring it to stage was hard, but not as hard as it might have been without that showmanship,” he says. “It only took me a few days, three or four shows, before I started feeling comfortable enough to deviate from the script, to be a bit looser. By the time we got to the end of Perth Fringe World, I didn’t use the script any more; we just use the key points and deliver it however it comes out.” So every show might be different and people should go see it multiple times? Mitcham isn’t just in furious agreement, he says it has given him a taste for performing that may define his life after swimming. “Whether it’s stage, radio, television, or all of the above, a career in the entertainment industry is definitely where I want to go,” he says. “Uni is just a plan B in case something happens and that dream doesn’t come through, but it’s what I’m working towards.” Throughout our conversation, Mitcham peppers his speech with the word “actually”. It’s almost as if he’s reminding himself and the people who have drawn strength from his story that these things happened, that they are happening and will continue to do so. Just like a successful dive, it’s the difference between a leap of faith and a controlled descent, falling so he can climb back onto the board. “I put myself back in that mindset of when I was at my rock bottom, and the reason why I suffered through this stuff for so long had to do with the profound shame I felt. I realised after getting sober that I didn’t need to feel that way,” Mitcham says. “The more you talk about things, the more it breaks down stigma and gets the message out that there is no need to feel shame. Stuff happens, and shame isn’t helpful – the shame only stops you from getting the help that you need.” \ hraj@theweeklyreview.com.au

Pantanal Backpacker hostel

AçaÍ do Mato

2301 Avenida Marechal Deodoro » www.pantanalbackpacker.com

695 Avenida Presidente Marques » www.acaidomato.com.br

This affordable and well-appointed hostel has crisp white sheets, a huge pool, and a barbecue for impromptu churrasco. You could do a lot worse in Brazil if you’re on a budget. Just south of Cuiabá’s main shopping strip, it’s an easy walk to markets, museums, bars and, a bit further along, the colonial section of old Cuiabá. Buses leave for the Arena Pantanal two blocks to the north. Staff are fluent English speakers (a rarity) and helpful with booking tours or other needs. Rooms are double, or can fit four, six or 10 people – perfect for a group of soccer fans. \

Brazil is justifiably proud of the Amazon rainforest, which accounts for about half of the country. A popular product from the nearby jungle is açaí (a-sai-ee), which boasts antioxidant qualities and is rather expensive in Australia. But Brazil has it by the wagon-load, so you can fight ailments with the purple doctor at bargain prices. Açaí do Mato, near central Cuiabá, whips up açaí into sundaes, smoothies and other delicious-looking dishes. But the best part is that, apart from offering healthy vegetarian meals full of tasty beans, local vegetables and rice, it also caters to meat lovers. \

Deville CuiaBá

1000 Avenida Isaac Póvoas » www.deville.com.br There’s a variety of modern, clean hotels in Cuiabá, and Deville stands out as the best. At the centre of town, Deville provides an escape from the street hustle and bustle. Choose from a pool to escape the heat or a sundeck to lap it up. Other facilities include a gym, snooker table and a buffet all afternoon. \

10 per cent of the city’s 550,000 inhabitants. Surrounded by fazendas, or farms, stocked with big white Brahman cattle, the town reflects its cowboy roots. Basking in tropical heat as it does, expect a Brazilian kind of Cairns or Townsville, complete with steak houses and boot-scooting live music barns. But with sertanejo (sur-ta-ney-oh) music blasting from taxis, buses, bars and clubs, Cuiabá does things a bit differently from Australia’s northern cities. It’s a form of folky dance with guitars and accordion, and Cuiabános love it. No trip into the state of Mato Grosso is complete without a night at one of the clubs, watching Cuiabános let down their hair. Dancing, and we don’t mean the Melbourne shuffle, is the focus. The energy and flair of the dances, put on mainly by amateurs, would make some popular TV dance shows pack up and go home. Outside Cuiabá, a short drive away, is the Pantanal, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the world’s largest tropical wetlands. Mid-year is high season, so book ahead to cruise the wetlands by boat. Or ride a horse and see birds and South American wildlife of Attenborough proportions, including giant anteaters, giant otters, and the world’s largest rodent, the capybara. You might even spot an elusive jaguar. One surprise is that, as well as its yacare caiman (a species of small crocodile), Brazil has a variety of the emu, the ema (or rhea), and a big, white, red and black bird called a jabiru. Australians will feel almost at home. \ editorial@theweeklyreview.com.au

It won’t cancel its warning message until you touch the “OK” button. Most car makers treat us like adults and self-cancel the warning after 10 or 15 seconds. Honda must have very conservative lawyers. Small things, admittedly, but given the strength of the competitive offerings,

they would add up to a deal-breaker for me. In other respects, the CR-V is entirely unremarkable. It does everything adequately without standing out anywhere. The interior space is good, the fit and finish is acceptable and comfort is OK. If you’re still glued onto the Honda badge there’s nothing here to upset you, but neither is there anything that will particularly delight you. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

apanese car makers have never seemed much interested in diesel motors, and Lexus still doesn’t offer any, believing diesel (which has been around since 1892) is a passing fad. But the uncomfortable truth they all must face is that, if they want to sell cars in Europe in any volume, they need a diesel option. Honda is a diesel latecomer, getting to it by an unconventional route. Most car makers start by putting diesels in their light commercials and 4WDs then, when the technology is sorted, put them in passenger cars. But Honda introduced its first diesel with its most popular car, the Civic, and has now put it in its most popular SUV, the CR-V. And it’s making sure people notice by putting 20-centimetre-high lettering on the doors of evaluation vehicles reading “CR-V diesel”. Everyone in my street knows about it. The 2.2-litre diesel may lack the refinement of its European competitors and it’s a bit noisier, too, but you can’t argue about the economy. CR-Vs nudge two tonnes these days but the fuel economy is terrific. The motor has a heap of torque. Once wound up it’s a very willing performer and overtakes efficiently provided you use the gears. But I couldn’t warm to this vehicle, and the reason is that the controls and functions I use most often are dumb. The navigation mapping starts showing minor streets only when you’re zoomed in so far the display is down to just a few blocks and then it’s hard to

t’s amusing when such an impeccably modern property turns out to be ancient in spirit. Present a stern face to society, but let your family life be an oasis of joy! That seems to be the motto at this two-storey house where sleek walls enclose a sunbathed pool and lawn, like the private courtyards of old Arabia and Moorish Spain. Just four-and-a-half years old, the house was designed by its owner, a professional builder, and has the best the 21st century can offer – C-Bus automation, Foxtel and the hydronic slab heating that makes Melbourne winters almost a pleasure. The 14-metre pool that is a focal point of its design is fully tiled and solar-heated, with its own bathroom, and an attractive barbecue terrace from which to admire its turquoise delights. The house – 40 squares of elegant, family-sized accommodation – has formal and casual living areas and four bedrooms, including the ground-floor main suite. Though luxurious, its tiled and granite surfaces hint at minimal housework. The double garage has internal access, and the location – on a peaceful street barred from Bulla Road traffic – is within a few minutes’ walk of shops, transport and Strathmore Primary School. The house presents an impressive face, with intersecting rectangles and a wide path flanked by standard ficus trees. From the gated porch, the slatted-timber front door swings open into a hall coolly tiled in large beige squares. Here, the long vista becomes intriguing. It’s tempting to walk on, fling open the french doors at the hall’s end and step into the sunshine of the north-facing pool patio and garden. Turn right, however, and sliding double doors lead to the formal living room that doubles as a cinema. The room is warmly clad in light beige carpet and has full-length windows and a Heat & Glo gas log fire with a Kashmir White granite hearth. A 2.5-metre drop-down screen allows a quick change to home theatre. The house’s midsection is given to useful little rooms – an under-stair storeroom and the white laminate laundry, which has a clothesline courtyard and a sliding door to the kitchen’s walk-in pantry. The kitchen marks the start of the long open-plan area and is a beautiful space, with press-release timber doors and drawers and Kashmir White granite on benchtops and island. The five-burner gas cooktop, 900-millimetre stainless-steel oven, dishwasher and double sink are by Smeg. The pantry almost doubles the kitchen’s size. In the dining and family area, a Heat & Glo pebble gas fire takes pride of place. French doors lead east to the pool and sliding doors link the family area to the covered terrace to allow lunch guests to waft around. There’s a Smeg barbecue and, beyond, a lawn hedged with pittosporums. The pool’s great length ends with an urn fountain against a stacked-stone wall. Two of the four bedrooms are downstairs. The carpeted main has french doors to the pool patio, a skylit walk-in wardrobe and a fully tiled granite en suite with twin Porcher basins, a frameless glass shower and a separate toilet. Bedroom two has a built-in wardrobe and an en suite. On the first floor are two double bedrooms, both with walk-in wardrobes and doors to the rear balcony overlooking the pool. The main bathroom is fully tiled in porcelain and has a Mibsa enamel bath, twin basins and a glass shower. \ ALISON BARCLAY property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Set on a secluded street, yet close to schools and Keilor Road’s shops, this owner-builder’s residence offers an exceptional build standard. The stylish façade is an early indication of what lies within. First up, the entry area inside opens to a study with storage, and the elegant living area and its polished chestnut floorboards are bathed in warm light by banks of downlights. This sophisticated room features a gas log fireplace flanked by two large windows. At the rear of this floor is the up-to-the-minute kitchen with European appliances, a dining area and that everyday indulgence, a theatre room. Upstairs, the large main bedroom has a fully fitted walk-in wardrobe and fully tiled en suite. The two other bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and large sunny windows with plantation shutters. A fitted, walk-in cupboard on this level should satisfy all storage needs. Outside, barbecue fanatics will welcome the built-in, plumbed barbecue on the main decked area. One bedroom has direct bathroom access via a walk-through wardrobe, and all have opaque glass doors to the hall. KENSINGTON \ 60 WOLSELEY PARADE

we love it This freestanding house is a splendid oddity, sprawled across a triple block amid little Victorian terraces. Handsome in tuckpointed red brick, Lisieux combines a quirky Edwardian floor plan with a ravishing renovation. During extension works in 2002, the owners revamped the original rooms with a retro flair

With an affordable price tag and appealing location, there is plenty to recommend about this two-bedroom unit. The front door opens to the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area. With a whole floor of living area, this flexible space has polished floorboards and its open plan would suit a laid-back lifestyle. The paved courtyard garden has enough room for a dining setting and has an elevated built-in garden bed. The modern kitchen has plenty of storage space including rose-coloured timber laminate overhead cabinets and cream-coloured drawers below and a pantry. A textured tiled splashback completes the look. Walk up the timber stairs and there are two sunny bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes and the bathroom with an incorporated laundry. Painted brick walls on this level add a textured backdrop. MOONEE PONDS \ 44 EVANS STREET This well-presented 1930s weatherboard has been thoroughly renovated and extended, retaining only its original gabled façade and front two rooms in creating a substantial family house on more than 650 square metres. The floor plan is unusual in that the hall ends after these two front rooms open to the popular open-plan living, dining and kitchen area. A wall of bifold doors extends this space, in fact nearly doubling it, flowing out to a covered rear deck. While the bedrooms have cream-coloured carpet, the rear living area has polished hardwood floors; both have white interiors and spacious, high ceilings. The main spa bathroom adjoining the bedrooms is fully tiled in a glossy marble look. The sleek, streamlined aesthetic is continued in the kitchen, where white stone benches are offset by a red glass splashback and stainless-steel appliances. A laundry conveniently has its own access to the rear deck and there is plenty of under-stair storage. The carpeted second storey contributes another two bedrooms. The large main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with a double shower. A large landing retreat is cosy and bright and provides a great vantage point for admiring the large rear lawn. On this deep block, there is plenty of room for entertaining, as well as housing two cars securely and up to three more in the driveway. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

Tucked at the rear on a dual-occupancy block, this townhouse is private, roomy and well designed for family living. Pencil pines line the driveway to the double garage, and small garden beds hug the peaked façade. The study is open to the entrance foyer and comes with storage. A laundry, bathroom and separate toilet divide the ground-floor bedrooms. Both bedrooms are carpeted and have built-in wardrobes. On the second storey, the main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and a bright en suite. Cove ceilings, recessed lighting and parquetry floors give the large living and dining area a classic feel, while the adjoining kitchen is subtly modern with timber cabinetry and thick, granite benchtops. Glass doors between the living area and north-facing courtyard allow an indoor/ outdoor connection that’s particularly handy when entertaining. The courtyard is predominantly covered and combines a paved section and artificial lawn. Schools are within walking distance and parks, bike tracks and transport are close by. \ KAY KEIGHERY
