The clean-up identified in this report includes removal of asbestos from buildings, polluted soil around underground fuel tanks, and a former rubbish dump. Refuse from a former quarantine incinerator is thought to be buried in the area. Fuel pollution has been found in 33 underground fuel tanks that are no longer used. There are two plating works on the site where heavy metal has been detected in the soil. The airport fire service, according to the report, had an area where unused fuel was spilled and ignited for training purposes. Stormwater run-off in the airport’s north-east corner now flows over the top of the former landfill and incinerator sites, then down Mascoma Street and into Moonee Ponds Creek. Mr Thomson wants the remediation of the site to occur before the new developments – it could affect the health of construction workers, subsequent employees and local residents. Last month the state government
announced it would create a major business and employment precinct at Essendon Fields, an initiative welcomed by Moonee Valley Council. But Mr Thomson is critical of the grandstanding by Planning Minister Matthew Guy. “We have just had an Essendon Airport’s master plan process, community resident meetings, a meeting of the Community Aviation Consultation Group, and at no stage did any radar detect the Victorian government on a policy flight path towards Essendon,” he says. Until now, the Victorian government has shown precious little interest in the airport, Mr Thomson adds. The master plan submission to Canberra was delayed for more than a month because of requests for extensions by the state government. The final word …

Profile \ Marvin Gaye’s story will debut in Moonee Ponds, writes Robert Fedele
he life of singer Marvin Gaye is next cab off the rank in a line of concerts that celebrate the stories behind some of the world’s most talented artists. Over the past few years, Room 8 productions has achieved success by engaging local musicians to pay homage to the stars of yesteryear. Examples include Tex Perkins starring in The Man In Black – The Johnny Cash Story, and most recently Vika Bull spearheaded At Last – The Etta James Story. Room 8 chief executive Moira Bennett, of Kensington, works together with her writer husband John Livings, who was penning the Etta James story when he discovered Marvin Gaye played drums with her during her heyday. “He suddenly realised that no one had actually done Marvin Gaye’s story, although a lot of people had tried, but for one reason or another it never really made it to stage in this way,” Bennett said. “A few people have done plays and different sorts of things but this is really more a celebration of his life.” Bennett said the Etta James production received widespread acclaim and spurred the crew on to target similar musicians of that era. Well-known performer Bert LaBonté sings and narrates the two-hour show, with hits including Let’s Get It On and I Heard It Through The Grapevine. “People will be heartened to hear Bert sing because he’s got an incredible voice,” Bennett said. “It gives people a snapshot of who the people are behind the music. A lot of people don’t know that Marvin Gaye has written as many songs as he has.” Bennett is a veteran of the music industry and started out with CBS and Sony in Adelaide before moving to Sydney to set up Virgin Records for Richard Branson in
the mid 1980s. She proudly lays claim to being the first female managing director of a major record company. “In those days there was loads of records and CDs, whereas obviously it’s shifting more online now,” Bennett said. “We used to sell vinyl records by the truckload in the street.” Buoyed by early success, Bennett decided to start her own record company, a grass-roots indie label that signed such acts as Not Drowning, Waving, and The Sparklers. But she quickly found the workload and demands were too much and changed tack, moving into distribution. Bennett went home to the UK for a short stretch with her husband and when she returned to Australia took on a number of jobs before teaming up with Room 8 founder Simon Myers. Myers had already begun the niche tribute concerts, delving into the lives of Johnny Cash and Eva Cassidy, the latter played by Clare Bowditch. The pair hope to produce several more shows and have received strong interest in regard to taking the Etta James production overseas to the US and Europe. Bennett said she was first and foremost a music lover and gets pleasure from the company’s direction. “Partly it’s a bit selfish because I love this sort of music,” she said. “I grew up listening to Marvin Gaye and I Heard It Through The Grapevine is one of the classic songs that spins your head around when you first hear it.” \

WEll-Being \ SHARON BROOKS GOES NUTS OVER MARKETS
Extend your lifestyle.
If that wasn’t already enticing, how about Portobello mushrooms as the burger bun for a light dinner served with sweet potato and beetroot chips? Baked mushrooms topped with cottage or ricotta cheese are a perfect protein dose pre-gym. Yes, mushrooms are the ideal vegetarian meal. Meat for every dinner is too much; be inspired by the variety and options. The inspiration continues as one considers other meal accompaniments. For me this is nuts and seeds. They are a power package of beneficial nutrients. Macadamia nuts, almonds, pecans, linseeds, chia, hemp and sesame seeds are a delight as a meal topper or served with kefir and poached berries for breakfast. Nuts and seeds contain beneficial fats for heart and brain health and the transport of essential nutrients; protein for sports preparation and recovery; good carbohydrates and fibre for bowel health and energy; and a plethora of vitamins and minerals such as zinc for stamina, metabolism and appetite, hormonal balance and sexual health. My final tip for market inspiration: make friends with the traders. They will look after you with fresh, ripe and utterly delicious goodies. \ SHARON BROOKS NEXT MONTH » Digestive health; essential for well-being

One of my current favourites is braised mushrooms in quinoa sushi with turmeric prawns, the perfect antioxidant booster as the weather cools down.
he food choices we make are a direct reflection of how we feel about ourselves. Seeking wholesome fresh produce is the first step of self-love and respect. It is a necessity in order to function optimally. For me, this begins at weekend markets. One of my favourite weekend activities is visiting local markets and farmers’ markets. I find the presence of fresh fruit and vegetables very calming, almost grounding. It’s partly the stunning colours: rich-red organic tomatoes juxtaposed with the jade- and golden-coloured zucchinis, leafy greens as far as the eye can see, dark crimson plums. My mouth is watering as I write. You see, I am passionate about local produce. Purchases from farmers’ markets support small businesses and families. Conversing with knowledgeable traders at markets opens doors to an entire world of food production. Do you know where your food is from? Has it been loved in the farming and agricultural processes? The wholesomeness of markets utterly inspires me. Many individuals write shopping lists and rarely drift. Not I. I look forward to seeing the “in season” produce and then contemplating what I’ll cook the following week. Everything starts with the vegetables, the true heroes of any dish. On a recent market outing I was excited by the array of mushrooms – brown button mushrooms, white and blushing oyster mushrooms, multi-sized oysters and wild enoki varieties. This is where the inspiration began. Mushrooms are suitable as a breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack

ne of the hardest industries to break into as a new brand is luxury watches. From the outset you’re up against companies with multi-generational watchmaking expertise, unimpeachable luxury status and, in many cases, histories longer than colonial Australia. But try new brands will, and succeed a small number do. Some for their “counter-culture” approach that offers a slightly rebellious alternative to the conservative, slow-moving nature of the biggest players. The disruption can be as simple as introducing a new design, such as making a traditionally round case square, as does Bell & Ross’ signature design. Another approach is for a player to build their cachet around a heroic modern story. Others just come in cheaper. We look at an example of each below. \ firstname.lastname@example.org
BREMONT established \ 2002
BELL & ROSS established \ 1992
SEVENFRIDAY established \ 2012
PRICE POINT \ $5K+
Story \ The first decade of Bell & Ross’ life was essentially re-issuing co-branded pieces by German watchmaker Sinn. In 2002, the designer and businessman behind the brand began to develop the iconic style it’s known the for now. manual Model \ The BR 03 launched at Baselworld in late March is vintage Bell & Ross, if there can be such a thing for such a young brand, with its brash orange canvas NATO strap and boxy case design, which references an in-flight instrument. Wearer \ Bold colourings on the dial, hands and markers complete a piece for people making their own way on their own terms and who are not needing traditional status symbols to prove it. RRP \ $7500
Puppy carers needed!
PRICE POINT \ $4K+
Story \ It’s a tearjerker. The English brothers lost their father in a plane crash in 1995. Their tribute to him would be a watch brand, developed in England and pitched squarely at the aeronautical space with a focus on extreme hardiness for extreme piloting situations. Model \ Like most Bremont pieces, the MBIII is relatively unadorned compared with most brands, but the quality is still apparent where it counts, with gleaming sapphire crystal glass and knurled pushers. Wearer \ It’s for no-fuss men of action who draw comfort from knowing their watch has been tested to survive ejector-seat activation and other non-suburban extremes. RRP \ $6760 PRICE POINT \ $1.2K+
Story \ A social-media success story, SevenFriday watches were placed on influential tastemakers on Instagram, in particular, and the brand blew up. Everyone wanted one before they were even available. Model \ The P1 and P2 models are also eye-catchingly square and oversized, but feature a busier, partly open-worked dial design that gives viewers a glimpse of its mechanical movement at its heart. Wearer \ The hybrid of industrial and avant-garde styling is ingenious and will appeal to people with strong, unique aesthetic sensibilities. Models come in a range of bright colours as well as the core metal pieces, so the fashion-forward can go to town. RRP \ $1200

There’s accommodation for eight and whatever those eight can put on their laps, with maybe room for the dog and an esky or two up the back. Or five people and lots of luggage. There are rear sliding doors on both sides, meaning easier access to child seats in crowded car parks. And the one on the pavement side is power operated and can be opened by the driver either with a dash button or with the ignition key. The driving position is just as elevated as many SUVs and it’s easier to park because you know where the ends of the vehicle are. A reversing camera helps, too. Kids will think the Odyssey is cool. Fast facts \ An imposing single-storey house on 1065 square metres, built in 1924 and extended in 1991; formal and casual living and dining rooms; Tasmanian blackwood kitchen with Bosch and Electrolux appliances; elevated barbecue deck overlooking heated pool and spa; five bedrooms; secure double carport with access to Levien Street, and extra parking in driveway; walk to schools, shops and Essendon station. Essendon \ 9 kilometres from the city
STRATHMORE \ 1/31 FENACRE STREET
hen the Fairbairn family of Lara decided to get a house in town, Essendon was their first choice. Essendon Airport had been established in 1921 and these landed gentry, with vast holdings in Victoria and Queensland, had keen pilots in their ranks. Zipping about in Gipsy Moths became even more pleasurable when this handsome Californian bungalow was built for a Fairbairn family member in 1924. It’s obvious the Fairbairns saw no reason to cramp their capacious style – the single-storey house on 1065 square metres resembles an elegant rural homestead. The current owners bought the property in 1989. Architect Kerry Callaghan designed extensions in keeping with the heritage-protected street, and in 1991 the owners returned to a beautifully restored home that now had an open-plan communal area to complement the original living and dining rooms. This area, with its beamed, vaulted ceiling, has french doors to a deck above the heated pool and spa. Along the house’s northern flank are five bedrooms, and on the south side is a study with a bay window that opens to a landscaped courtyard. Ceilings are lofty, the carpet a rich shade of cream and all the windows have custom-made curtains or sunscreen blinds. Security, ducted heating and refrigerated cooling bring the cosy old place up to date. If that’s not enough to tempt a family hither, consider this. St Columba’s College, Penleigh and Essendon Grammar and Lowther Hall, are respectively up, down and across the road. The property opens with a luxuriant garden of roses and magnolias, with parking in the red-brick driveway to supplement the double carport at the property’s rear. The house is solid in double brick with a terracotta roof and deep wrap-around verandah with rendered colonnettes and a tessellated floor. The brick balustrade’s rounded top makes it comfortable to lounge on. The front door is at the side and leads to a wide, arched hall, and an atrium with clerestory windows in the centre of the house. Glass double doors lead to the living room, which has two bay windows, a brass chandelier and an open fireplace with green tiles and a timber mantelpiece. Across the hall, another pair of doors heralds the dining room with its ornate ceiling and open fireplace. The main bedroom is in the house’s north-east corner, lit by a bay window framed by russet-red curtains. It also has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite with shower and twin basins. Along the central hall are four more bedrooms, all with built-in wardrobes, cream-coloured carpet and sash windows. Serving them is a beige-tiled bathroom with spa bath, shower and twin Caroma basins, a powder room and a store room. Another bathroom, with shower above the bath, is at the rear next to the large laundry. The open-plan area includes the impressive kitchen, which has dovetailed Tasmanian blackwood cabinetry, an Electrolux wall oven and 900-millimetre stainless-steel gas cooktop, and a Bosch dishwasher. Its enormous pantries command a full wall. The tiled meals area shares with the carpeted lounge a cathedral ceiling crossed by timber beams, and the glass western wall has sunscreen blinds. Beyond the french doors, the covered deck has a built-in barbecue and a resort-style outlook over the five-sided pool, semi-circular spa and pretty patio. Timber stairs lead to the carport, which doubles as a safe arena for tots on trikes. \ ALISON BARCLAY firstname.lastname@example.org

Only 11 kilometres from the city, Strathmore’s popularity continues as a family-friendly destination with shops, trains, parks, sports grounds and sought-after schools. Easy freeway access is a bonus. This new development of three units is an affordable option. No. 1 at the front has a three-bedroom, two-bathroom configuration on three levels, including a lower-ground double garage with automatic doors and internal access. The elevated ground floor contains an open-plan living area with glossy floor tiles and two sets of black-framed sliding doors to an outdoor balcony that has a screen for privacy. A grey-and-cream colour scheme throughout sets a contemporary tone. Grey stone benches in the kitchen, bathrooms, laundry and powder room are particularly stylish. A window splashback in the kitchen provides great streetscape views. The bedrooms, upstairs, have grey carpet. The main has a walk-in wardrobe and en suite while the other two bedrooms share a bathroom with a striking feature wall. \ EMMA HOUGHTON
ESSENDON \ 1/50 BRADSHAW STREET
Brad Teal \ 9374 2199
Price \ $695,000
Bradshaw Street is an example of Essendon’s real-estate progress writ large. As the suburb shakes off its sleepy reputation to fast become one of the more desirable postcodes, so is this street transforming itself from rows of 1950s bungalows to sleek, modern dwellings. This is a new property that offers a flexible floor plan and a low-maintenance lifestyle. The ground floor consists of a bedroom that could be converted to a study, open-plan kitchen/dining/living, bathroom and European laundry. As expected in a new build, all fixtures and fittings are top quality and include 2pac cabinetry, granite benchtops, Miele appliances and spotted gum floors. There are two bedrooms upstairs as well as a bathroom with separate bath. There is a remote-controlled garage and courtyard garden, but if a game of kick-to-kick is required, Buckley Park is half a block away. Three secondary colleges are within a 10-minute walk. Extras include heating, cooling, plenty of storage options and a large water tank. \ JAN FISHER
