ALAN Murphy \ It takes time to plan for the future

oonee Valley’s optimistic chief executive Neville Smith gave us the good news last week – landowners and developers will submit plans for many of the big-ticket planning items in coming months. And he expects outstanding planning issues such as the Moonee Ponds Activity Centre and both Essendon North and Keilor Road structure plans could be resolved before the state government goes into caretaker mode at the end of October. But there are issues yet to be discussed with the community, especially on the Moonee Valley Racecourse redevelopment and the former Kangan TAFE site at Avondale Heights. There are also proposals for a Chinese developer to build 1200 apartments on two sites around Flemington Racecourse. The government advisory committee recommended positively about the Moonee Valley Racecourse development in December, but left a door open for community debate and negotiation over heritage overlay issues

While Mr Smith is confident of a positive outcome, it won’t happen by year’s end. Mr Smith says it was his understanding that Places Victoria would sell their land to developer Australand in February. As of last week, Places Victoria implied it had no plans to sell the land. It is now five months since the council met the Planning Minister on many planning issues. In particular, the council told Mr Guy that it should be reinstated as the responsible authority for planning matters concerning the portion of VRC-owned land that is in our municipality. We respect Mr Smith’s and his officers’ experience and welcome their optimism, but getting these issues resolved or even substantially completed before the end of October is a challenge. We wish them well. THE final word …

Draft Amendment C153 to the Moreland Planning Scheme Moreland City Council Your Residential Zones are Changing – submissions close 17th April 2014 All existing Residential 1 Zone (R1Z) land in Moreland is being rezoned to one of three new zones – Neighbourhood Residential Zone (NRZ), General Residential Zone (GRZ) or Residential Growth Zone (RGZ). This is to implement the reformed residential zones introduced by the Minister for Planning. The new residential zones are designed to give greater clarity about the type and density of development that can be expected in residential areas. Councils have until 1 July 2014 to introduce the new residential zones into their planning schemes. If Council chooses to do nothing, the existing Residential 1 Zone (R1Z) will be transitioned to the new General Residential Zone (GRZ) on 1 July 2014. The New Zones – How to find out more On 12 March 2014, Moreland City Council endorsed Draft Amendment C153 to the Moreland Planning Scheme, to be forwarded to the Residential Zones Standing Advisory Committee for review. Draft Amendment C153 covers Moreland’s proposed approach to rezone residential land to the three new residential zones. The Draft Amendment, including maps of the new zones, can be viewed at the weblink below or at the Moreland City Council Customer Service Centres and Libraries. If you wish to speak to a Council Planning Officer about the Draft Amendment, please call Moreland City Council’s Strategic Planning Unit on 9384 9230 or drop in to the Coburg Customer Service Centre during business hours. You are encouraged to call ahead to make an appointment to reduce waiting times as the introduction of the new zones affects approximately 72,000 properties and will likely attract wide interest.

The Minister for Planning has appointed a Residential Zones Standing Advisory Committee (the Committee) to report on proposals to apply the new residential zones. On 12 March 2014, Moreland City Council resolved to request that the Committee review the introduction of the new residential zones into the Moreland Planning Scheme. The role of the Standing Advisory Committee is to: • Give submitters an opportunity to be heard by an independent body in an informal, non-judicial manner. An Advisory Committee is not a court of law. • Give independent advice to the Minister for Planning as outlined in the Terms of Reference. Information about the Committee including its Terms of Reference can be found at: Submissions by 17 April 2014 Any comments on Moreland Council’s Draft Amendment C153 to introduce the new residential zones, must be made as a written submission to the Residential Zones Standing Advisory Committee. If you would like to make a written submission you must do so by close of business (5pm) Thursday 17 April 2014. Submissions can be made online You must complete the online Submission Coversheet. Parties wishing to post in a written submission will need to contact Ms Cutting at Planning Panels Victoria to obtain a hard copy of the Submission Coversheet. Submissions must be directed to the Committee through Planning Panels Victoria. Council cannot accept submissions. The Committee has pre-set Public Hearing dates for the week starting Monday 12 May 2014. If you wish to present in person at the Hearing, please complete the relevant section of the Submission Coversheet. All submissions and all information provided at the Hearing will be treated as public documents. ou can always sell June,” my mother said, apropos of nothing, as I spooned custard into her mouth. She’s lost the inclination to eat most meals for herself. “You don’t have to wait till I’m gone. Any time you want to, you can sell June.” Increasingly our conversations are like this – gossamer cobwebs on the breeze. “I’m tired of waiting,” she said last week. Cobweb swings … Tired of waiting for what, mum? Tired of waiting to die! My mother is disappearing in increments. It began 5½ years ago when she suffered a massive stroke. They left her in emergency for 23 hours, erroneously expecting, apparently, that without attention this old woman would succumb to the practical with good grace. But the young ones seldom reckon on the strength of children of the Great Depression. I’m as tough as an old boot, she’s always said. And she wasn’t finished – there was work to be done! Her first few weeks of many months of painful rehabilitation were dominated by just one thought: Erect a headstone for the baby. The Baby That Died! We don’t speak her name because that was all she ever had, but she occupies the six years between my brother’s birth and my own like a

hungry ghost. My big sister, delivered looking so perfect, scarcely drew breath; but 53 years on she can still suck all the oxygen out of the room. It was an era of stoic silences and stiff upper lips. My mother was not allowed to hold her dead baby, was offered no opportunity to grieve. Her own mother’s blunt advice to her only daughter was to “pull yourself together girl and just get on with it”. And she did, but with much anxiety and little self-confidence, always anticipating the worst-case scenario … in just about everything. I think I was about eight when I first discovered the perfect baby girl wrapped in white tissue paper inside a lovingly embroidered

pillowcase among my mum’s best linen. I pulled her out, transfixed, just as my mother came down the corridor. “Don’t you touch that,” she said, swooping towards me. The Bébé Jumeau, or Baby June as my mother as a three-year-old called her, being unable to pronounce the words stamped on the beautiful bisque French doll. It was the Depression and her father – apparently the original role model for the saying “if it was raining soup he’d have a fork” – had decided to quit Footscray and go farming, whereupon the family was immediately overrun by rabbits. Never in wildest imagining could her parents have afforded such an exquisite toy. The doll had been given to my mother by the local chemist. His 15-year-old daughter was off to boarding school and had no more need of her, he’d explained after asking my grandparents if he might give it to “little Thelma”. After the solemn handover my mother was not thereafter allowed to touch baby June, who was locked away for safe-keeping. “She was just too valuable,” mum explained in an earlier retelling of the story. So, too, are you if only you’d realise it my dear old mum. Leaving – I fear – very soon to cradle a baby lost. \

Q: What do all these very individual homes have in common? A: Every single one is a knock down & re-build.

Different owners. Different needs. Different stages of life. Different suburbs. Different budgets too. (These have ranged from the mid $300,000’s to $900,000.) But all the illustrated homes were ‘knock-down and rebuilds’. All were designed and built by Fasham. We have been advising, designing and building for clients wishing to knock down and

re-build for over 40 years. We are especially experienced in this niche, with around 70% of all our work being knock down and rebuild. Our designs are individual responses to individual briefs, with houses always orientated to the path of the sun and designed to optimise the potential of every site. Whether you are planning to knock down and rebuild

on your present land (perhaps with subdivision in mind) or on land you have acquired for the purpose, we believe we have unmatched experience to offer. Please visit our display homes in Balwyn North (see address details below), view our website, or call Emma Fasham on 9822 9000.

olin Hay is sitting in the front room of his house in the hills above Los Angeles. It is 1993. Details of the day are not known, but let’s say it’s hot. There’s lots of Californian blue sky. Curtains are pulled against its heat. Zephyrs lift a single eagle in the air higher, a pin-drop against the blue. The man who has sold, at this point in his life, more than 30 million records is also alone. Just an acoustic guitar. A cup of strong coffee, not whisky. And the ever-present swirl of unfinished songs in notebooks and on loose sheets. A songwriter mate called Tom Mooney breezes in. “How are you doing, Tom?” Colin says. Tom replies: “I don’t know … I just feel like I’m waiting for my real life to begin.” The answer unlocks something in Hay. Like songs sometimes do, one is brought into being simply by the phrase. He begins to work back, to find the story, the chords, the melody. More words follow. Any minute now, my ship is coming in / I’ll keep checking the horizon, and I’ll check my machine / There’s sure to be that call, it’s gonna happen soon, soon, oh so very soon …

Hay explains the story of the song. “The way Tom said that really resonated with me because I was waiting around for something to happen, you know. And then it really struck me that nothing is going to happen to you unless you leave your house, and go out and do stuff and take some action. To make things happen. That’s what I’ve been doing ever since. It’s an important song for me in that sense. Leaving behind the past and just letting it be, you know.” The story begins here for two reasons. The first is to tie the interview in with Hay’s run of shows at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival titled Waiting For My Real Life, which references the song. Second, and more importantly, this moment was something of a median point in the career and life of one of Australia’s most successful and enduring songwriters. It says much about where he had been and where he was to go. Behind him lay the kind of glory few artists have known. First in Australia, New Zealand and Britain, before the big time in the US where in 1981 his band Men At Work watched their debut album Business As Usual and single, Down Under, reach No. 1 simultaneously. Strewn amid the success were too many liquor bottles and broken relationships. Ahead of Hay from this fateful point lies more glory, though a quieter, unplugged kind. Unplugged also in the sense that it’s not wired. It’s not drunk, it’s not stoned. It’s Colin Hay; acoustic balladeer, storyteller, teetotaller. While as fans we divide our favourite musicians’ lives into albums and songs – expecting this to correspond with something meaningful for them – they have their own distinct chapters. Hay’s relate to where he has lived. This scene in Los Angeles also marked his move away from Australia and the “beginning of my third life”. “I lived in Scotland for my first 14 years; that was a life in itself. The punctuation mark was when I went to Australia in ’67, where I stayed for quite a long time. That was another life. Since then, I’ve been living in California. It’s another life again, completely different and separate. I find Los Angeles a spiritual kind of city. The light and the air has a certain quality to it.” Air is a good theme for this interview, which starts with Hay fully inflated. He is curious about where I live in Melbourne and why. Hay owns a two-bedroom place 12 The weekly review \ APRIL 2, 2014

in St Kilda behind the Esplanade Hotel. He bought it off the plan six years ago. “I can’t think of where else I would go,” Hay says. “I lived there 30 years ago, before I left for LA. Then I came back and I got my own place and now I live between the two. When I’m in Melbourne, that’s where I am. “It’s funny, you know, when you go back to St Kilda, you tend to see the same people wandering about there that were wandering about 30 years ago. They’re just a little redder in the face. They’re a bit more shell-shocked but they chat to you like they saw you yesterday, which is also sort of comforting.” Hay’s permanent residence is in Topanga Canyon in the mountains above Santa Monica, where Neil Young and Charles Manson had places in the ’70s. He and his wife, Peruvian singer Cecilia Noël, own a “small stone and timber A-frame place, built by an old hippie” up among the million-dollar houses on acreage. In the second verse of Waiting For My Real Life to Begin, Hay describes the times as “lean”. How would he describe them now? There is a pause. “Well, they are extremely good times for me in many ways,” he says, sighing, letting out a lot of air before he goes on. An image of Hay slowly deflating like a man-shaped air mattress forms and persists. “The first reason is that I’m still walking around and that’s a good thing. I like living. I don’t know what the other thing is, and we’ll all find out at some point. I turned 60 around the same time my mother turned 90. And then my mother passed away a few days later.”

n The Age in early 2013, Hay described his mother, Isabella, as a “movie actress who was never in films … a star.” The combination of Hay’s milestone birthday and his mother’s death weighs heavily in his words. After another long silence, he continues to ruminate on the subject of time, one of the mainstay tropes in his lyrics. He references a line from his ballad I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You, which appeared in the platinum-selling soundtrack to the movie Garden State. “I just like that idea of shaking the hand of time and making a kind of deal – the deal is, that it doesn’t really matter how much time goes by, there are certain things that are going to be a constant.” Like so many others in his catalogue, the song – one of the most powerful and poignant odes to the lingering effects of a relationship breakup – also mentions alcohol. “I’m no longer moved to drink strong whisky,” he sings with a kind of weary hopefulness. In other tunes, such as I Wish I Was Still Drinking, he just plain admits it. He misses beer, wine, spirits, everything. He also misses the amnesia, the anaesthesia, the Dutch courage, the

distraction that comes with copious amounts of all of it. Does he still? “Yes. Very occasionally,” he says. “Not enough to make me drink. If I am somewhere where I feel very safe, or if I’m with very close friends, and I’m somewhere where there’s delicious food you know, fantastic wines … Very occasionally I’ll get a whiff of it and think, I remember that. But not enough to make me drink any of it.” Would it be possible to enjoy just one wine with a nice dinner? “Andrew, I’m an alcoholic. That’s plain and simple,” he says. “You have to tell yourself the truth. And it’s not really about how much you drink, it’s about what happens when you drink. I mean, it’s something that you have to constantly monitor and it’s never an exact science by any stretch of the imagination.” This leads us to an interesting place. Hay has copped criticism about his decision to leave Australia for Los Angeles in the early ’90s. The facts are compelling – at that time, Hay was playing to 150 people at the Espy and 150,000 at the Rock in Rio event. You can’t blame someone for going where their bread, or empanada, is buttered. But the facts don’t tell the whole story. In 2004, in another interview with The Age, he said at that time he’d thought, “F---, if I stay in Melbourne, I don’t know if I’ll be alive in five years”. Could he elaborate? “Australia is a very difficult country to stop drinking in. People don’t like it when you stop, because usually they have got a problem as well. The whole country has an alcohol problem. “But I just knew that I had to quit if I was going to survive. I would try all kinds of things. ‘I will only drink wine today’,” he says, affecting a mannered English accent. If this little skit is anything to go by, his Comedy Festival show will be really something. “ ‘I shall only drink with food.’ ‘I will wait till after 6pm.’ ‘I shall only drink white spirits.’ ‘I shall only drink with women.’ ” By the third or fourth clause, we’re both laughing out loud. The moment of levity reinflates Hay and emboldens me to dare ask if he drank when he wrote any of his multiple hits, such as Down Under and Who Can it Be Now? Did alcohol play any part in his creative process as a songwriter? “None. None!” he says again, in the most emphatic statement of the interview. “Alcohol is useless as far as that goes, for me. I mean, I can’t really remember writing a song drunk or when I was drinking, ever.” Ironically, quitting drinking gave Hay’s voice all the qualities of the best top-shelf liquors. His vocal tone, which can be stringent and as taut as an overwound guitar string, is now more often rich, mellow and peaty. His solo work, recorded sober, has yielded many songs of the highest quality.

something that distinguishes you from the crowd. Determined to offer Essendon something “different and delicious”, Naomi Pasinetti opened Johnny Pump in the space formerly occupied by Fletchers Pasta Bar. The revamped space is now, as she describes it, a “little New York with a touch of nonna’s kitchen”. That’s a point of difference in the thick of Fletcher Street. What’s important, however, is that the message doesn’t get lost in cluttered décor and an oversized menu. There’s certainly a homage to the Big Apple when you walk into Johnny Pump. A mural of the Manhattan skyline covers one wall and an Uncle Sam sign points at you directly from the front door. The front room at Johnny Pump is a mish-mash, with an open kitchen and fridges set among the tables; it felt to me a little like sitting in the cafe’s staff room. But out the back there are smart canteenstyle wooden tables and chairs, each set with a tub of napkins and cutlery and a bottle of water. It’s nicer here, although the décor still seems more frazzled than thematic – framed hessian bags, a ladder hanging high, vintage lamps. It feels slightly industrial but doesn’t quite cut it. We’re here to eat, however, and the menu is

big. Breakfasts take up the American theme featuring New York waffles with eggs, bacon grilled with maple syrup, and cinnamon butter. It’s rich and the serving is generous. The generosity is consistent in the aptly named Fletcher’s Big Vegie breakfast, complete with eggs, spinach, mushrooms and haloumi, or a Breakfast Hoagie (slang for a hero or submarine sandwich), which is a wad of Turkish bread packed with bacon, egg and a sweet tomato relish. Lunch brings Italy into the mix with pasta dishes – gnocchi with cauliflower and gorgonzola, or a seafood risotto – but we’re recommended the spaghetti with wagyu meatballs, apparently fast becoming a signature dish and enough to feed two adults. The tomato sauce is well reduced, and the meatballs intense with a good fat-salt balance. The large menu continues into dinner with a handful of dishes available only after 6pm. Perhaps a slow-roasted pork belly with parsnip mash, or crispy-skin salmon with lemon and garlic mash. Regardless of the time of day, the staff are friendly, happy to talk through dishes and, for the most part, keep the room moving at a steady pace. Johnny Pump isn’t pushing any envelopes in terms of its menu, which could benefit from a little refining, but it’s good, approachable food that is well priced and generous. There’s a happiness here, a contentment in opening a place with a point of difference. \

in any creative field and ever really walk away from it. It becomes a part of who you are.” Costarella’s first collection, titled Minima, sets the record straight when it comes to YTTRIUM’s fashion statement. “The collection is strongly silhouette-driven,” he says. “It’s all about draping, form and structure, and very architectural at heart.” This winter is largely driven by slabs of black, glittery hues and lots of art-deco influences in the way his fabrics fold, swing and sculpt the body. Costarella promises his spring/summer campaign will be driven by brighter colours. “I wanted to present a different point of view, a different side of my personality,” Costarella says of the new collection. “I have many dimensions that I would like to explore as a designer. Design is a creative outlet and should embrace all parts of one’s personality.”

urelio Costarella’s diffusion womenswear line YTTRIUM makes its debut at Myer this season. The celebrated Western Australian designer, who has been making lavish gowns and dresses for the best part of 30 years, says his decision to start an accessible line is his attempt to make himself a household brand. “I wanted to launch a new brand that was more accessible and spoke to a very different audience,” says Costarella, who has just sold this very collection in Paris and plans to revisit Europe in October to work on a potential distribution deal for YTTRIUM. “I had no desire to produce a traditional diffusion brand that was effectively a watered-down version of my mainline. YTTRIUM is a separate brand in its own right,” he says. Fashion is all-encompassing for Costarella, who admits he doesn’t ever switch off from his job. “My work consumes me,” he says. “I live it pretty much 24 hours and seven days a week. You can’t be

Tech Talk \ Rod Easdown makes a point about umbrella design What \ Blunt Umbrellas

price \ $69 to $149

Tech talk verdict \ I love it. No, I really, really love it

ake a look at any of those really old photographs where people are holding umbrellas. Take a moment to study those umbrellas. The interesting thing is that they’re just the same as current ones. We may have navigation by satellite, coffee in pods, instantaneous mail and free video phone calls but, when it rains, the umbrellas we unfurl haven’t changed much since the invention of the camera. And they’re rubbish. That’s because rain is usually accompanied by wind. And wind, the destroyer of umbrellas, is the thing with which umbrella makers have not come to terms. How many times has the canopy fabric of your umbrella ripped away from the end of a strut? Those struts that are capped by little pointy things that poke people’s eyes out and make lawyers rich? Hello, 21st century calling. The Blunt is clearly an umbrella whose time has come. It doesn’t have pointy things. The struts are tipped with curved retainers that will bring nothing but despair to legal circles. And those struts are supported by reinforcing spars; the whole assembly spreading tension evenly across the polyester canopy so the entire canopy is evenly tensioned. There are no areas of slack or of excessive stress. The little coil springs at the end of each strut help regulate this, and all this tensioning helps in opening the umbrella. To close, you don’t push in a painfully

Hello, 21st century calling

sharp little latch or even twist; you just pull and down it comes. The lesson of the Blunt is that taut equals strong. The company repeats this like a holy mantra. The biggest person at Blunt (seriously, he’s 1.9 metres tall) is Greig Brebner, a New Zealand engineer who has been working on building a better umbrella ever since that fateful rainy day in 1999 when he got off a London tube and ran a gauntlet of Poms armed with umbrellas, all of them intent on poking him in the eye. His goal since has been to make an umbrella that won’t tear itself apart in wind and won’t threaten other people’s vision. He worries about the number of umbrellas going into landfill and very possibly believes that, now he’s built a better umbrella, damp people will beat a path to his door. He was the weirdo who kept walking up Auckland’s One Tree Hill in storms carrying prototypes; umbrellas with flatter aerodynamic canopy profiles and ribs that move with the buffeting. When he had one that survived a force-12 gale, he figured he was on to something. He sent me an $89 Blunt Classic to try out (there are various models from a small Metro at $69, up to golf umbrellas at $149). I love it. No, I really, really love it. He’s not getting it back. Oh, OK then, maybe next summer. \ »

Nissan Juke ST-S What is it? Hard to say, really. What’s in it? A 140-kilowatt turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder with a six-speed manual. Is it thirsty? I used 10.5 litres per 100 kilometres in the city, 7.5 in the country. The official combined figure is 6.9. Nissan juke ST-S Drive away (Supplied)

eird cars pop up from time to time; it’s a cyclical thing. In 1983 there was Suzuki’s Mighty Boy, the most ludicrous ute in history. The company followed it with history’s most ludicrous convertible, the Cappuccino, although Daihatsu’s Copen gave it a nudge. Nissan has had some odd ones too, with limited-edition Figaros and S-Cargos, a few of which found their way here as private imports. Individuality to the exclusion of everything else is happening with SUVs, creating vehicles so niche you could hold a meeting of all potential owners in your living room. Pontiac’s Aztek for example, Kia’s Soul and Toyota’s Rukus. And now Nissan’s Juke. Get past its looks (that takes some doing) and the Juke is actually heaps of fun. It’s powerful and peppy, it has a light and fast manual gearbox and, hey, when you’re inside you don’t have to look at the outside of the car. Apart from the weird eyebrows atop the headlights anyway. Hang on. Are those things headlights? If so what are the big round numbers beneath them? Turns out the headlight assembly is split into separate top and bottom elements. Designers have ideas such as this after a long lunch and usually get put right by the boss. But here, well, maybe the boss was taking a sickie. Or maybe it was the boss’s idea. So it’s an SUV and, while only the top model ($35,787) gets four-wheel-drive, the underbody is clean enough to traverse

partially overgrown bush tracks. Stay away from sand and mud. What am I saying? This is a car for metro trendoids who go all shaky if they’re more than 10 minutes from the nearest cappuccino machine. The same ones who would have bought Volkswagen Ups if they were more powerful and didn’t look so much like Volkswagens. No such problem here. But here’s the surprise; although I’m about as trendy as warm beer, I became fond of this

strange little thing. It goes, stops and handles surprisingly well (the cost being the firm ride), it’s not expensive to run, it’s easy to park and well-equipped. The bonus is that it’s made well and comes with a strong warranty and good ownership package. One thing, though; people keep pointing and giggling. If you’re part of the Juke’s target demographic, you’ll like this; if you’re my age, you no longer care. \

Thumbs Down Rear seats are tight, the 46-litre fuel tank means you’ll go to the servo lots, and people point and giggle. Getaway \ PETER WILMOTH spends a long weekend in sydney

ydney can be a lot of things – and a lot of those things can be experienced in one long weekend if you plan well. We love eating, drinking wine, beaches and hotels with character and charm; on this trip we nailed all four. Our big discovery was taking a bus from the city to Bondi, where we spent the day at the gorgeous Tamarama (next to Bondi) and had a great Japanese meal with some Melbourne friends. The bus was cheap (probably $35 cheaper than a taxi) and it doubled as a tour. With the Baz Luhrmann and Catherine Martin version of Strictly Ballroom about to open, it’s a great time for a visit to the city that really is just up the road. \ »

DO \ Bondi to Bronte walk Take a bus from the city to Bondi (it’s easy, cheap and allows a wonderful tour of Sydney) for the coastal walk to Bronte. There is so much to see and enjoy on this short walk. Start at Bondi, head to Icebergs restaurant and then take the pathways to the stunning little beach called Tamarama (whose picturesque surf club features in a recent paint commercial), walking past many bodies beautiful on the exercise stations provided by the council. It’s a great way to get exercise as your breath is taken away by the beauty. Afterwards we stopped in for a bite at the casual and excellent Raw Bar Japanese restaurant (1/136 Warners Avenue, Bondi, (02) 9365 7200)

Overlooking Sydney Harbour and the Royal Botanic Gardens, the Pullman Quay is an all-suite hotel. Right in the heart of the CBD and a short walk to the Opera House, this is an excellent option for a city stay, especially for those with children. The Pullman Quay Grand has three meeting rooms (if you’re doing business), an indoor heated swimming pool, a spa, sauna and gym. The suites are luxuriously appointed and of a good size, with a living area, self-contained kitchen and a large spa in the bathroom. \

This is a cracker of a place with great food and exceptional service. Ask for the corner table looking out onto East Circular Quay where boats and ferries pass by. It is an entertaining tableau as you experience the recently rebadged restaurant in the Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour. \

49 Market Street, Sydney. (02) 8262 0000 » Prepare to be wowed. From the moment you step out of the QT hotel’s elevator – which plays songs relevant to how many people are actually in the elevator – you know you’re in for a different experience. Built within the historic former Gowings department store,

QT sydney adjacent to the State Theatre, QT’s foyer hints at what’s to come: walls decorated with old suitcases, televisions, and found objects. The building’s redesign blends gothic, art deco and Italianate-influenced architecture and there’s a theatrical vibe everywhere. The lobby has a bar and café called Parlour Lane Roasters, which simulates the entrance to an old boutique New York hotel. The 200 rooms are elegant, quirky, sumptuous, moody and decorated with style and humour. They’re the sort of rooms – not to mention the magnificent bathroom with walk-in shower – that are difficult to leave. Be sure to leave some time for the Q spa, which includes an old-fashioned barber shop and is listed in Conde Nast Traveller’s “35 Hottest Spas of 2013”. \

he World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast is famous for close encounters with whale sharks, the world’s largest fish. But this 260-kilometre reef off Western Australia’s coral coast (1200 kilometres north of Perth) is also a haven for humpbacks, pygmy blue whales, turtles, dugongs and manta rays, among many hundreds of submarine species. And the warm desert climate of mid-north WA makes it the perfect antidote to winter blues. \

Whale sharks

An estimated 300-500 whale sharks migrate to WA every March and April for Ningaloo’s coral-spawning extravaganza, a full-moon phenomenon that keeps these massive creatures fat and happy for months. The semi-official whale shark season runs from March until July, but tourist operators say the big fish routinely hang around until October. Book an “eco-tour” during these off-season months for a chance to swim with whale sharks and also to see humpbacks, manta rays and dugongs feeding and frolicking. Staff at the main tour companies will make sure you get the most out of the experience. Meeting a whale shark face to face is an awesome adventure. They can grow up to 13 metres or more, so you can imagine the shock of that first encounter on the outer reef. But these animals are so placid that fear gives way to curiosity. One of the great wildlife encounters. (Supplied)

A day out with Dave Mongan combines adventures on land and in the water. His 14-seat customised Oka 4WD takes groups on full-day tours into Cape Range National Park, a harsh country of stone and spinifex where arid WA meets the Indian Ocean. Visit canyons and gorges, the Harold E. Holt Naval Communication Station – where US naval personnel once eavesdropped on enemy ciphers – and the Vlamingh Head Lighthouse at sunset. Marvel at black-footed rock wallabies in Yardie Creek and swim with turtles in the serene Turquoise Bay. Mongan and his wife Teresa have run their tours for more than 10 years with, as he says, “no complaints so far”.

Sal salis Novotel Ningaloo Resort

Sal Salis

The best address in the small town of Exmouth (population 2500) is this smart two-storey resort on Town Beach. Behind the Novotel’s eye-catching architecture of pink limestone, corrugated iron, timber and glass lie comfortable, modern rooms that open to sea breezes and the sound of waves breaking on shore. Most balconies face either the swimming pool or the Indian Ocean; some rooms have kitchen facilities for longer stays. \

Nestled in the dunes of Cape Range National Park, Sal Salis combines unexpected luxury with environmental awareness. Its nine tents are solar-powered and rainwater-fed but there’s no sense of deprivation in its handmade jarrah beds, posh organic linen or en suite bathrooms. Exhilarating days spent exploring Australia’s largest fringing coral reef or the rugged landscapes of Cape Range are rewarded with sunset cocktails, gourmet dinners and amazing stargazing. \

» Visit for details on the Coral Coast and information about flights, hotels, car hire and activities. » Qantas and Jetstar fly from Melbourne to Perth and on to Learmonth, from where it’s a 20-minute drive to Exmouth.

Thursdays are curry night at Grace’s Tavern, a typical country pub with big-screen TV and a subcontinental chef who whips up a mean rogan josh. On other nights, pizzas and proteins rule. Open daily 5-10pm and weekdays for counter lunches. \ Whalers Restaurant

Whalers Restaurant in the town centre is deservedly popular for outdoor dining on local seafood. Paul Minniear’s New Orleans gumbo of local fish, prawns, mussels, soft-shell crab and smoked sausage is a force to be reckoned with, in the tastiest possible way. Open for breakfast, too, from 9am. \ Mantarays restaurant

At the Novotel, Mantarays Restaurant has a contemporary fit-out and beach-friendly menu of chilled Exmouth prawns, local snapper in laksa sauce and risotto of WA seafoods. The bar’s not bad either. \

he most awe-inspiring building on Mount Alexander Road looks as if it might once have been a convent. Built of speckled brown brick with pointed arches, steep triangular architraves and an oriel window from which one could quietly contemplate the jangle of trams below, it has an almost religious magnificence. But the clues to this Gothic Victorian’s past are tucked above the lintels of three ground-floor windows. On one panel, the mason has engraved an English rose; on another, a Scottish thistle. The third bears Australian gumnuts. It was here, in the early 1880s, that the English, Scottish and Australian Bank decided to open a branch. The ES&A had offices in the city, but Mount Alexander Road was a desperate case; as a main route to the goldfields, it was the scene of frequent bail-ups. Giving miners a safe place to stash their wealth seemed a wise move. The building was designed by Terry and Oakden, with offices in front and manager’s residence behind and above, and opened for business in June 1884. The ES&A was absorbed by ANZ, and the building continued as a bank until 1972. By the time the current owners – a sister and brother – bought it in 1991, it was in decline. In came a local builder, Stan Elder, architect Andrew Fedorowicz and his interior designer wife, Jackie. The trio restored the carved timber details and gave the entire building an alluring palette of pale grey-green walls with dusky red and cream details, colourful friezes, heavy curtains of velvet and brocade, and deep green carpet dotted with sprigs. In every room, brass pendant lamps with frosted glass shades cast a warm glow. The bathroom and powder room have tessellated-tiled floors and brass trims, and hydronic heating offers pleasant warmth. The building has two front doors; one, the former bank entrance, has two sets of double doors that lead into a handsome office with a high ceiling, tall sash windows and a timber counter. Adjoining it is the bank manager’s office, with its grey marble fireplace and hefty Hobbs & Co walk-in safe. A second door leads to an L-shaped corridor with a kitchenette. The carpeted hall is dominated by the towering staircase with its hand-turned posts. To the left is a bedroom or living room with sash windows and a marble fireplace. Down a rather complicated corridor, with several doors, is a second bedroom, followed by two powder rooms tiled in ivory with red floral trim. From here, a vestibule opens to a fern-filled courtyard, then to the rear yard that has four secure car spaces and two store rooms. The first floor comprises the formal living and dining rooms, three bedrooms and the main bathroom with its clawfoot bath. The living and dining areas are serene in grey-green, with enormous pendant lamps. The dining room commands the oriel window. A wide arch leads to the living room and its grey marble fireplace. The main bedroom, too, has a marble fireplace and is decorated with a William Morris-style frieze with a rabbit and deer design. The second bedroom would make an ideal nursery. Bedroom three is an attic-style room reached by a narrow staircase at the house’s rear. The challenge for a home buyer? There’s no kitchen – but one or two rooms are ripe for conversion. \ ALISON BARCLAY

The charm begins at a leadlight-surrounded glossy red front door that opens to an entry hall leading to the two bedrooms. Both bedrooms have the high ceilings, ornate cornices and ceiling roses typical of the period, and one has a fireplace. Next up is the lounge. It’s an inviting space made all the more appealing by a fireplace set under an ornate timber mantel, large sash windows and original Baltic pine floorboards. The house is modern where it counts with a fully renovated bathroom and a gleaming kitchen that includes a walk-in pantry. Outside, the paved courtyard garden is kept private by established gardens, and a rear car space (with access from McNea Street) and shed add to the amenity. Families fond of sharing their space for stylish entertaining are likely to flock to this fine house on a deep corner block. Originally a modest Californian bungalow, the house has been extended and the interior reinvented with an eye for style. From the floor coverings to the light fittings and outdoor fixtures, no expense has been spared. High fencing and pretty gardens precede the period façade. The main bedroom has built-in wardrobes and a chic en suite. The lavishly equipped kitchen opens to a dining room that opens to the side deck. Glass doors lead from the linked family and living areas to the rear outdoor room. With a built-in barbecue and kitchen, outdoor spaces are linked by decking and covered for all-season usage. At Christmas, these guys turn the backyard into a moonlight cinema using the spacious freestanding studio and manicured lawns. The carport has remote-controlled, side-street access. For a building named Rose Villa, there are precious few of the blooming beauties on show, but there is plenty more about this property to appeal to buyers. The street view presents a graceful single-fronted Victorian and the bull-nose verandah with wrought-iron lace adds to the attraction. The first two bedrooms lead off the hallway and have been restored to their original splendour, including open fireplaces under ornate timber mantels. A spacious formal lounge continues the heritage theme and then the rear of the house takes a more modern turn in the open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. Upstairs is a parents’ retreat that leads to the main bedroom, which has a wall of built-in wardrobes and its own air-conditioning unit. This level is kept bright and airy by a vaulted, timber-lined ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows in the bedroom. Outside, the established garden has been immaculately maintained and includes a car space and a laundry that could be converted to a study. Proposed Road Discontinuance Moonee Valley City Council (‘Council’) acting under section 206 and clause 3 of Schedule 10 to the Local Government Act 1989 (‘the Act’) gives notice of a proposal to discontinue a section of unused road described below and sell the land contained within the road by private treaty. The road is contained in Certificate of Title Volume 8365 Folio 271 and abuts 1-3 Grice Crescent and 972-978 Mt Alexander Road, Essendon as shown hatched on the plan below.

To find out what zone could apply to your property and how to make a submission to the State Government’s Standing Advisory Committee, visit The Minister for Planning has appointed a Standing Advisory Committee (the Committee) to report on proposals to rezone land from the Residential 1, 2 and 3 Zones, to the new Neighbourhood Residential Zone, General Residential Zone and Residential Growth Zone. The role of the Committee is to: • Give submitters an opportunity to be heard by an independent body in an informal, non-judicial manner. Much hardship and difficulty is caused to job-seekers by misleading advertising placed in employment columns.

Our Professional Employment and Situations Vacant columns are reserved for advertisements which carry a SPECIFIC and GENUINE offer of employment. All employment advertisements must state clearly the type of job offered and remuneration offered. (i.e. salary package, retainer plus commission or commission only). "Commission only'' jobs are only accepted in these columns PROVIDED that this is clearly stated in the ad AND the employer is paying Workcover and Superannuation. If not, then these advertisements MUST be placed in an alternate classification such as Self Employment Opportunities. Placing misleading advertisements is an offence against the Competition and Consumer Act and all advertisements are subject to the publisher's approval. For further advice contact the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on 9290 1800. Whilst Metro Media Publishing make every attempt to screen job advertisements, WE DO NOT ACCEPT LIABILIT Y FOR ADVERTISERS WHO FAIL TO C O M P LY W I T H T H E S E REGULATIONS.
