January. Yarra Trams certainly attempted to honour its commitment, but it borders on scandalous that its contractors walked away seemingly unaware as to where they had to dig to fix the pipe. Don’t even ask how much the futile exercise cost and who pays. Probably us. So if there is heavy rain between now and January, the flooding will continue and the community will pay the price. PASSING THE BUCK

VicRoads, not the council, is ultimately responsible for the road’s maintenance and has known about the issue for years, as has the council, and they’ve done nothing about it. Local businesses and citizens have regularly spoken to both VicRoads and the council, demanding action. Most calls were shunted between the roads authority and the council. One caller, frustrated at the lack of interest at council level, suggested he would write

a letter but was abruptly told, “Don’t even bother; your letter won’t get to first base”. More important issues to tackle, apparently. When heavy rain falls in the area, the modest contribution made by the authorities is to place a sign by the pedestrian crossing saying ‘Excess water on road’. But there is little consistency about its appearance. When there was flash flooding in Essendon on November 23, there was no signage despite dangerously high levels of water. If the authorities are serious about the safety hazard they have known about for years, then at least they could be consistent in displaying the warning signs. Maybe late that Saturday afternoon, emergency staff had other things to do with their time. THE FINAL WORD…

You can trust your dog to guard your house, but never to guard your sandwich. \

Melbourne and surrounding areas switch on 10 December 2013*

Last week to switch!

The final countdown to digital-only TV has begun The analog TV switch off is happening on 10 December 2013* – and there’s no turning back. After this date you won’t see anything if you’re not ready for digital-only TV.

What do I have to do? Remember, to keep watching free-to-air TV shows, you’ll need either: • one set-top box or a digital TV recorder for each analog TV you use; or • a new TV with a built-in digital tuner. Most importantly, you do not have to buy a new TV if you do not want to. Most antennas and cabling should work after the digital switchover. However, if you have any concerns about your reception, you may consider asking an endorsed Antenna Installer to check your antenna and cabling. If you have any other questions, or to find your nearest endorsed Antenna Installer, visit our website or call the Digital Ready Information Line.

Don’t put it off any longer. Get ready for digital TV today. *Please note: switch off may occur earlier in some towns. Residents in these towns will be informed about the switchover dates. See the website for more information.

ntil recently, my only memory of The Prom was that of feeding a flock of birds, with my brother and sister, about 15 years ago. Unbeknown to my parents and me at the time, those flaming galahs, which happily scoffed seeds out of the palms of my hands and from the top of my head, were ridden with lice. The family trip was abandoned so we could embark on a week-long marathon of nit shampoo and fine-tooth-comb torture sessions. On the upside, however, I can confidently say the shaved-head look is not for me, nor my sister for that matter. Today, my memories of Wilsons Promontory couldn’t be more different. Put simply, I cannot get enough of this world-heritage-listed wonderland. During winter, The Prom is a harsh place beaten by wild squalls and giant swells and, honestly, it’s not the most hospitable place on Earth. Better to stay on the mainland around the quaint towns of Foster or Fish Creek – dairy-farming country – where cheese, wine and knitted woollen jumpers rule. The Fish Creek pub is a stunning art deco building that serves a mean pork belly with all the trimmings – roaring log fire included. In late spring, summer and early autumn, however, it’s a different story. The Prom’s campsites are crowded, the beaches are full, the ocean is fluorescent and the walking tracks crowded. With that in mind, time your trip carefully. If you are after a secluded experience, you will need to visit before or after the summer peak. Wilsons Prom has 12 camping grounds scattered around its 90-square kilometre bushland, with most located on the coast and accessible only via the walking

coastline trails. But if you are limited to a weekend, I’d suggest heading north to climb Mount Oberon’s peak. There is a car park at the base of the Oberon hike and, if you’re organised, you will have someone waiting there with the car. There is nothing worse after a couple of days far from the sound of cars than hitchhiking back to Tidal River along a bitumen road, watching people – who were light-years behind you – coast past. Oberon’s peak is the hardest part of this hike – steep and across large boulders. I would recommend having sturdy boots for this. No trek is complete without a reward and, on a good day, Oberon’s view will blow you away, leaving you to ponder what else you’ve been missing all this time. \ emorton@theweeklyreview.com.au

tracks connecting them. Hence, hiking this Victorian icon is not just a day trip. Hikers tend to walk from campsite to campsite for days with little more than a few water purifying tablets, a backpack filled with canned baked beans or tomato soup, some dry socks and a good campfire to keep them motivated. The western coastline of Wilsons Promontory National Park is the most visited by far because that’s where the road into the park lead. It’s perhaps not as daring as venturing out to the eastern coastline where the beaches are more secluded and there are fewer people, but the road offers access to a few equally spectacular treks without requiring walkers to forgo quite so many comforts. Starting at Picnic Bay and finishing at the top of Mount Oberon is a good overnight trek to get first-timers acquainted with The Prom. You can get this done in a day if you’re quick, but rush it and you are more likely to return home exhausted and still wondering what The Prom looks like. The track, which requires a moderate fitness level, hugs the coast past Picnic Bay and Squeaky Beach, and eventually leads to The Prom’s only “town”, Tidal River. Tidal River is one of Victoria’s most popular camping spots and, whatever the weather or season, it’s stunning. Visitors who aren’t strapped for time should book and spend the night, or even a couple, here. Beyond this “CBD”, the track continues beneath the western slopes of Mount Oberon. With uneven steps to climb, fine white sand to drag your ankle-high boots through and the sun’s rays bouncing off the rocks, this section is a little more strenuous but, for me, the most enjoyable. At the end of this stretch is Little Oberon Bay, one of The Prom’s almost unrealistic-looking secluded beaches. From the coast, the trail leads inland to Telegraph Junction. From here, you can continue to the eastern

here aren’t many vehicles that have lasted longer than Volkswagen’s Beetle; 58 years and 21.5 million made. But one that has managed it is yet another Volkswagen – the almost as ubiquitous Kombi. Would you believe they are only now ceasing production in Brazil? The Beetle started down the line in 1945 in postwar Germany, although a handful were built before the unpleasantries, and the last of the Type 1s rolled out of a Mexican factory in June 2003. The Kombi began production late in 1949 and has lasted 64 years. It was Volkswagen’s Dutch importer who first had the idea of building a van based on the Beetle chassis. The company had made several flat-bed delivery vehicles on Beetle running gear to ferry parts around the factory and, inspired by this, he sketched up his idea for a van. It was essentially a big box on wheels. It looked a lot like a Kombi. With the same engine as the much smaller Beetle and aerodynamics roughly on a par with Captain Cook’s cottage, Kombis were never quick vehicles – something well known to the legions of motorists who got stuck behind them as they slowed to a crawl up just about any gradient. Contrary to what some owners swore was fact, surfboards on the roof rack never assisted the aerodynamic profile.

Camping conversions were plentiful and there was even a special build for a hearse. The RAAF once used them as mobile air traffic control towers. By far the most sought-after among collectors is the rare 21-window van, with a split windscreen. In the 1990s Volkswagen started building Kombis with water-cooled engines, but by then the writing was on the wall. Everywhere except Brazil. Brazilians would keep on buying them if they could, but Kombis have been forced out by new safety laws over there effectively bringing 1966 Volkswagen koMbi 21-window an end to forward-control vans, or vans in which the driver sits on top of, or ahead of, Nor did replacing the VW logo at the front whack out of the rear, which meant that even the front wheels. with a peace symbol. with the generous tail gate, entry to the back Brazil’s special final edition of 1200 units, Its shape was the Kombi’s major attraction. was only from the sliding door at the side. with retro hubcaps and interior features, will It yielded a lot of internal space for its external As Brazilian production halts at the end end the Kombi forever. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au profile, despite the engine bay taking a large of the year there will have been 1.6 million

hen the movie industry’s early players felt their stars rising, this was the sort of house they ordered – 1920s Spanish colonial revival, a style we like to think of as classic Hollywood. But to the owners of this impressive estate, the sunbathed lawn and bountiful fruit trees evoke a much earlier period. They call it their Garden of Eden. And their wish is that the next owners will enjoy the abundance. Built in 1936, the solid-brick house remained with one family for 60 years. When the current owners bought it in 1996 they commissioned Petridis Architects to more than double its space, adding a first floor and balconies in harmony with the original loggia-style porch. The formal living and dining rooms were complemented at the rear by a new open-plan living area spanning almost 12 metres. With four double bedrooms, a study and a four-car garage that doubles as a party venue, this is family comfort on an opulent scale. For that final Hollywood touch, a $25,000 palette delivered fresh ivory and mint tints to the new rooms and, in the original rooms, caramel and aquamarine with ornate ceilings highlighted in gold. The polished floorboards, old and new, are Tasmanian oak, and all the crystal chandeliers are original. However, the house’s footprint is still petite in relation to its 990-square metre block, most of which is garden plus a circular driveway. Essendon’s Mar Lodge Estate is noted for deep allotments, and this garden backs onto several others, creating a private oasis. The house opens with a terracotta porch and cobble-glass door. The study is fitted with mahogany cabinets, ideal for a home business. Across the hall, glass sliding doors open to the living room, which has a cast-iron-and-brass fireplace and wide sash windows clad in brocade. Another pair of sliding doors leads to the dining room, lit by a chandelier. The L-shaped hall also serves a large laundry with lots of storage and its own verandah, a green-and-white bathroom with a shower and store room. So concludes the original half of the house. But the flow is easy into the open-plan rear, where the enormous family room opens via three pairs of french doors to an arched, covered patio above the garden. The kitchen is imposing, as befits owners who worked for decades in the café industry. Amid glossy white cabinets are a 900-millimetre stainless-steel Ilve oven with gas cooktop, a Dishlex dishwasher and room for two fridges. A timber-and-wrought-iron staircase leads to the four bedrooms. The main, at the front, has a private balcony, a white-tiled en suite with bath and shower, a walk-in wardrobe and a shoe cupboard set deep in the wall. The main bathroom has a Clearlite spa and a shower. Three further bedrooms have built-in wardrobes; one has a box-bay window and the others have french doors to the wide balcony overlooking the rear garden. The garden seems to have its own microclimate. Well protected, it allows lemon, mandarin, apricot, fig and plum trees to flourish, and there’s a fine collection of herbs and veggies in bluestone beds. The elegant garage, which has a kitchenette and powder room, has accommodated parties of 100. With its glass doors open to the garden on a summer day, it must indeed feel like the most exclusive suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel. \ ALISON BARCLAY property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Auction \ December 14 at 12.30pm

While it appears Victorian from the street, the interior of this two-storey residence reveals it to be a clever reproduction. The entrance path has tessellated tiles and the Hawthorn-brick façade is fringed with lacework. Timber floors, oversized windows and a warm colour scheme grace ground-level spaces. A cutaway from the foyer introduces the lounge room, and the dining room has a door to a side path. The claw-foot bath looks at home in the pretty bathroom, while timber cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances and a black-tiled splashback feature in the kitchen. The connected dining and family area has glass doors to a paved courtyard. Upstairs, three carpeted bedrooms with built-in wardrobes share a second bathroom. The main bedroom opens to the front balcony. Up again, and the neat attic serves as a roomy studio or optional bedroom. There’s a rear ROW to the garage, above which is a loft perfect for a teenager’s retreat. Schools, parks and the Puckle Street precinct are in walking distance. \ KAY KEIGHERY

The front door leads to the open-plan kitchen and living area, which have some of the best of Niddrie’s elevated views. Living areas all have polished floorboards and a large family room at the rear of the house covers almost a quarter of the house’s footprint. A study ups the convenience factor. All three bedrooms are doubles and the main bedroom has french doors to the terraced backyard, which is kept private by established hedges. Outdoor entertaining is a breeze with an undercover paved dining area, and barbecue worshippers take note – this venerated object has its very own pergola. FLEMINGTON \ 40 FARNHAM STREET This double-fronted freestanding Victorian makes a great first impression. Once inside, the extent of the renovation and the depth of the block bring a new dimension. The renovation has incorporated five bedrooms, formal and open-plan living and a simply landscaped backyard. Baltic-pine floors and cream interiors enhance the original period rooms. The front lounge room is a highlight. It has a north-facing bay window and fireplace with art nouveau-tiled surrounds and a decorative mirrored-mantel. Four bedrooms are off the hall. Raw timber doors are a great rustic feature that complement the simple interiors. The rear open-plan kitchen, living and meals also includes a study space with built-in shelving. New timber floors, timber kitchen cabinetry and a wall of timber-framed doors bring warmth to the white walls and dramatic black-granite benchtops. The far rear wall has an arched floor-to-ceiling feature window that frames the garden views, increasing the generosity of this airy space. The large rear deck is a natural extension of the floor and a built-in pond, bluestone retaining walls and stone paving complete the pretty scene. Upstairs, the big main bedroom has an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and study nook. An arched window mimics the form used downstairs and offers treetop views. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

Stripped back to its bare Victorian bones, this classic property is the ideal blank canvas. It is impressive just how much space this house offers behind its unassuming picket fence and cream façade with wrought-iron lacework and tessellated-tiled verandah. Step through the front door, framed with red stained glass, and a long hall with twin arches runs almost the full length of the house. Three bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and a huge formal lounge up front all have marble fireplaces. A smaller fourth bedroom with high windows sits opposite two bright bathrooms, one with a shower only, the other with a shower over the bath. A vast family room to the rear of the property has yet another marble fireplace and opens to a spacious meals are and L-shaped kitchen. A separate laundry leads to a deck. The large backyard has a lock-up shed and a carport with ROW, plus there’s plenty of underhouse storage. Sitting pretty on the edge of Royal Park, it’s a short stroll into the city and close to trams. \ STEPHEN A RUSSELL
