udgement day awaits the Essendon Football Club in the next few weeks after a five-month investigation into alleged use of prohibited drugs. The Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority is scheduled to announce its findings next month. Irrespective of the outcome of the ASADA/ AFL investigation, the club’s handling of the controversial issue has been exemplary. It went on the front foot when the news broke earlier this year and both management and players have reportedly co-operated fully with authorities. As the inquiry continued, Essendon president David Evans regularly updated members and supporters through the club’s communication outlets with written updates and well-received video presentations on the club website. The club’s comments have been informative, dignified and restrained, despite the constant public attacks on its integrity and reputation, particularly those directed more recently at senior coach James Hird.

Evans has won huge respect from members for his handling of the unprecedented crisis. As the investigation reaches its conclusion, the club’s patience is almost exhausted. It responded strongly on July 17 to factually incorrect statements aired in some media outlets. Although we were told at the start there would be no continuing dialogue on the topic, the AFL has found a way to often talk about the supplements issue and put its opinions out there. Chief executive Andrew Demetriou more recently implied that the legality of whether certain supplements were banned was far from crystal clear. You could be forgiven for thinking that player suspensions and loss of premiership points were off the table. But Essendon will be heavily fined for bringing the game into disrepute. The club could handle that, but the loss of future draft picks could make it a double whammy. The AFL would not want to go to war with the Essendon club or its army of supporters by removing premiership points on the eve of

the 2013 finals with the team having had its best season in more than a decade. The club would head to court and barristers would muddy the waters to retain hard-earned premiership points. Were those points threatened or lost, members would mount a public protest. On a related note, it’s great news that former CEO Ian Robson is the new boss of Melbourne Victory. It was right for him to step down because he seemingly didn’t know what was going on in his football department. For decades though, the footy department built a brick wall around itself at times making it challenging for the Board, CEO and senior non-football staff to know what was going on. Robson was a victim of the secrecy. Sources suggest that code of silence has intensified in more recent years. The Bombers will now pay the price for that.

There is method to the occasional food-science madness of Scott Pickett and Joe Grbac – two talented chefs who hail, respectively, from Northcote’s exalted Estelle Bar and Kitchen and the late Press Club. Sure, they might kick off with an oiled wafer of crisp potato layered with dots of tomato mousse and vinegar “dust”, but the important thing is it tastes terrific. Much like everything on the menu here. St Crispin is named after the patron saint of shoemakers, a nod to the cobbler who once occupied this Smith Street site, and a neat fit with the neighbouring St Mark’s, patron saint of notaries, lions and op shops. More recently the site was home to Cavallero, which closed suddenly and left Pickett, Grbac and Co. just 10 days to renovate and launch what may well be Smith Street’s best restaurant. The long, lofty space will feel familiar to those who knew Cavallero but the finishes are mostly new. Behind the green marble bar lurk serious cocktails ranging from agave syrup margaritas to “perfect” G&Ts containing capsicum, of all things. Dining settings are comfortable, Scandi-style timber and leather seating, banquettes and handmade oak tables, with Italian stools at the bar. The place has been packed on both my visits but the staff ensure service is as smooth as the mood-enhancing playlist of Sam Cooke, Petula Clark and 10cc. The menu is a two- or three-course deal priced at $50 and $60 that, given the food quality, is solid value. In keeping with feeding fads they’ve also introduced a range of Little Bites to begin, from oysters to eel croquettes and something called Snap Crackle and Pop – twice-cooked pig skin dredged in “pseudo bacon”, a flavoured dust that tastes of cured pork. The concept is so wrong but it tastes so right. I’ve yet to find a dud dish. Early standouts include a starter of pullet egg, mushrooms, Parmesan, goat’s curd and black rice. The egg is soft-cooked at 63.5 degrees; the Parmesan is both an “espuma” (foam) and jellied squares of cheesy consommé; the mushroom is hunks of cakey sponge that look like torn bread, and a pile of sautéed fungi beneath; the black venere rice is puffed and crunchy (and, according to my web search, it possesses amazing anti-ageing properties; I’ve ordered a sack for home). The textures are playful – fluffy foam, crunchy rice, spongy fungi, and gooey, warm egg – and the flavours fuse beautifully. Then there’s the veal cheek, gelatinous and sticky in the mouth, teamed with a crisp, slightly smoky wedge of belly and the cloying indulgence of pan-fried thymus gland. A sweetbread surprise. The meats sit on a purée of miso eggplant, with broccoli, cigarette-sized macaroni and toasted almonds for company. Positively salivatory. As is the winelist. This leather-bound document is a fine match for the calibre of food, with a choice of grapes and styles from across the winemaking world. We’re tossing up between a French viognier, a Spanish

LAMANNA SLASHES PRICES Con Cole Worths

Patrick LaManna from LaManna Direct, in an exclusive interview with the Supermarket Times revealed that they have reduced shelf prices on 100s of grocery lines to fight back against the “BIG 2 SUPERMARKETS”. LaManna Direct has brought new excitement to supermarket retail in the Australian market and can be benchmarked against the world’s best. In a volatile price sensitive market LaManna Direct aims at changing consumer perceptions influenced by the constant media by Coles and Woolworths. “In the price perception war, LaManna has reduced shelf prices for aminimum of 6 months on products, brands and sizes consumers actually want”.

“No petrol gimmicks or annoying jingles, just comparative pricing for consumers to make informed decisions”. LaManna, ‘A new kind of supermarket’ provides consumers with an alternative to the existing duopoly. The store delivers a better shopping experience, quality, service, value and range. LaManna is something to marvel at, with everything under one roof and also guarantees 100% AUSTRALIAN quality fresh fruit and vegetables, meat and seafood*. Below, the Supermarket Times have selected several of the reduced prices for consumers to compare and choose who they wish to support. *Excludes Kiwi Fruit when Australian Grown Fruit is unavailable.

MY VALLEY \ Greg Peters is Niddrie through and through, writes Carole Levy

P

rincipal of Niddrie Primary School, Greg Peters, lives in Niddrie with his family. He likes watching local footy in his downtime and is keen to see the green belt in his patch protected for future generations. What’s your favourite eatery and place to get a coffee? My wife and I often head to Coffee Addiction in Keilor Road for breakfast. For dinner we might go to Biagio’s Restaurant, also in Keilor Road, where my usual order is a veal scallopini. They have a very nice garden room out the back.

(Michael Copp)

What is your neighbourhood retreat spot? I enjoy walking along the Maribyrnong River. It’s a good, flat walk of about four kilometres so a bit more of a serious walk for me. I always run into someone I know and stop for a catch-up. Sometimes my teaching staff and I go there instead of having an indoor meeting; it seems to have the right ambience for finding solutions and arriving at decisions. Steele Creek is another favourite spot. It gives me the feeling of being out in the country where I can ‘I would hear nothing but birdsong; it’s very peaceful without background traffic noise. hate to see Watching local footy is also downtime for me. My the green 16-year-old son is a midfielder for Aberfeldie. belt go.’ What change would you like to see in your patch? Speed humps! They drive me mad even though I know speed control is necessary. Construct islands perhaps?

What would you never like to see changed? I would hate to see the green belt go – the one that extends from Steele Creek and the river, down past Brimbank Park and on to Riverside golf course. Where do you go to snag a clothes bargain? If I’m after business wear for school or a comfortable, casual outfit I go to Westfield shopping centre in Airport West.

Share a funny story of being out in your ’hood. I have to be careful not to be caught in thongs or ugg boots at the supermarket because I always seem to bump into children from my school. I know all the parents on a first-name basis so they usually stop for a chat – and their young school child will look bemused when I don’t dress as I do at school. The students think I actually live at the school. \

A shoe-in for happy feet Sufferers of these conditions can be assisted by the professional team at Extra Depth Footwear @ Happy Feet Pedorthics in Moonee Ponds; it specialises in helping people by using medical grade footwear.

Stroke victims with an inability to move their limbs or who have foot deformities can also be fitted at Extra Depth Footwear.

“Scleroderma – hardening of the skin – can be seen in the feet and can cause a loss of elasticity, padding and motion,” pedorthist and owner of Extra Depth Footwear @ Happy Feet Pedorthics Clare Nelson says.

“Pedorthic management of the foot affected by stroke can include providing shoes with a long opening style to help with foot entry; a strong heel counter for added stability and support; and orthotics to relieve pressure.”

Nelson has helped many people with the condition, including Mia.

Nelson and her team have been helping clients plan their footwear to match their wardrobe and budget for 17 years.

“I have scleroderma, which means changes to my joints causing pain. I got to the stage where I couldn’t walk more than short distances in any of my shoes.

“Clients leave us smiling because we have made a difference to their lives,” Nelson says. “They now have happy feet!”

Using a hooked stick on a D-clip on boot strap gives Mia independence when putting on her shoes.

Lymphedema – accumulation of lymphatic fluid causing swelling – can also be treated by the team for people having trouble fitting into their shoes.

\ loz blain rides the KinG oF the three-Wheelers: the PiaGGio MP3 500cc

P

(supplied)

iaggio’s brilliant MP3 500 is the reigning champion of the three-wheeler class and deserves to be more successful than it has been. The MP3 platform doesn’t seem to have been a raging sales triumph in Australia since its release more than six years ago – you still don’t see too many of these jiggers around the streets. And that shouldn’t come as a surprise, seeing as how the bike market in Australia is much more recreational and lifestyle driven than practical. But anyone who has actually thrown a leg over one of these odd-looking contraptions has discovered how they completely turn the idea of a three-wheeler on its head. For starters, the vast majority of three-wheelers on the road for the past few decades have been trikes. Two wheels at the back, a giant Volkswagen motor (or similar) driving a pair of fat car tyres and a single, skinny front wheel handling steering duties. In other words, a combination of all the crap things about riding (exposure to rain, little crash protection, need to wear a helmet), minus a lot of the fun things about motorbikes (leaning into corners, the ability split through and dart in and out of traffic), plus some of the worst things about cars (big road footprint, momentum pushing your weight sideways in a corner). Then there’s the fact that all your extra grip and stability is at the back end of the vehicle, where you need it least – extra tyre surface is much more useful up the front under brakes or in a corner. So next you look at the Can-Am Spyder, a fairly modern take on the three-wheeler with two wheels up front and a sporty 1000cc twin motor. But it’s still more or less as wide as a small hatchback, so you’re stuck in traffic – and it still doesn’t lean over, so it tries to throw you off the side when you go around a bend quickly. Not my idea of a good time. The Piaggio MP3 is a totally different kettle of fish. It’s a true motorcycle, except with two wheels at the front. Each wheel is independently suspended, allowing the vehicle to tilt like any other motorbike, but with the vehicles on the road easier to pull a rolling burnout on. addition of an extra contact patch of rubber at the front. In fact probably the most amazing thing about the And how does it feel to ride? Absolutely superb. MP3 platform is just how much it feels like a regular On three bowling ball-hard scooter tyres, the MP3 motorcycle – a really well set up motorcycle – to ride. countersteers as light as a feather and grips like nothing For all the extra grip and stability, it still corners like a else I’ve experienced. Too fast into a corner? You’ve got enough tilt mechanism, which is handy for parking and also for grip to do some reasonably firm braking while you’re playing about trying to ride around with your feet up. actually leaned over. Pick the wrong cornering line As soon as you hit the gas again, the lock releases and you’re heading through a gravel patch? Not and you’d better be ready to catch the bike on a problem, the front end might move a touch the throttle! You can but it’s not going to slide anywhere near as Speaking of the throttle, the MP3 uses a trust the early as a regular motorcycle tyre. And when continuously variable transmission (CVT) front end you need to hit the brakes for an emergency – so when you give it a fistful, the revs rise stop, the added grip and stability of that MP3 into the peak power zone on the tacho, and so much front end gives you a truly shocking degree of stay there as the transmission adjusts to deliver stopping power. maximum drive to the back wheels. It works Put a more experienced rider on the MP3, and nicely and makes light work of stop-start traffic. The you’ll see a twinkle in their eye in the first few minutes 500cc motor delivers a grunty 29.4kW of power that’s an as they realise what this technology can do. excellent amount to inspire lots of full-throttle abuse. You can punt this thing about on the grass and try Downsides? Well, while Piaggio sells the MP3 as to slide it, you can hoon about running one wheel up being “no wider than [a] standard maxi-scooter”, it’s still and down off the gutter, you can abuse it over potholes, a bit wider than most bikes, so you do get stuck in traffic cobblestones and tram tracks in ways that just aren’t a little more often than on a two-wheeler. possible on two-wheelers. And even though the engine Plus, there’s no getting around the fact that it’s a is at the back of the bike, the braking force is powerful scooter. It’s not quite a step-through, but it looks dorkier enough to loft the back end into a pretty impressive than a sportsbike and has enough luggage capacity to stoppie if you’re so inclined. stick a tennis racquet under the seat with your shopping You can trust the front end so much that you bags. That’s incredibly practical, and practicality is a soon find yourself scraping the centre stand on four-letter word to many Australian motorcycle buyers. parking lot figure eights and tight circles. And if Still, that’s not the MP3’s fault. And like I said, you’re game to light the back wheel up, there are few it deserves to be more successful. Every hardened

sportsbike fan that I threw the keys to came back with a grin under their lid and saying the same thing: these things are an absolute hoot and a serious piece of kit. They’re not cheap ($11,300 on the road) – but I still reckon they’re a seriously cool technological step forward and bikers owe it to themselves to check out what they can do. And if you’re worried about being seen on one, you can always stick a Groucho Marx disguise on your helmet. \ lblain@theweeklyreview.com.au » piaggio.com.au/products/piaggio
