an increase of traffic on the existing Ascot Avenue/Rosehill Avenue T-intersection,’’ the report states, with initial estimates of 6700 vehicles per day on Ascot Avenue. Kataland has proposed various sporting fields including an oval and pavilion for cricket and Australian Rules football, with support from ‘‘local partnerships’’. ‘‘Kataland will liaise with the council and engage with the various sporting facilities in the area to assist in the establishment of [junior] community clubs,’’ the report stated. ‘‘Due to the preferred location in the south of Underbank, it would likely be delivered during the middle to late stages of the project.’’

Council chief executive Rob Croxford said the proposal was at an ‘‘early investigation stage’’. ‘‘The council is liaising with the proponent to ensure all information required to address the strategic assessment guidelines is included. ‘‘This information will be necessary so the council can determine whether or not to make a recommendation to seek authorisation from the Minister for Planning to prepare and exhibit an amendment. ‘‘There is a long way to go in this process and the community will have the opportunity to view the proposal and express their opinions on it before any formal proposal is put to council for a determination.’’

Bacchus Marsh Residents Association secretary Margaret Scarff said the community had a right to know about developments earlier. ‘‘We only found out about this plan by default. Somebody posted the plans on Facebook. ‘‘Council must consult in the early stages, the big worry is this project will worsen traffic problems.’’ A Kataland spokesman declined to comment but indicated discussions with the council were ongoing.

MOORABOOL Council is in discussions with a Melbourne property developer for a large housing project west of Bacchus Marsh. The Weekly has seen Kataland Development’s proposal for 1400 houses on a 167-hectare site formerly occupied by the Underbank Stud Farm. ‘‘Kataland is now focused on Underbank in Bacchus Marsh and will leverage from its experience to deliver a master-planned community that will enrich and build upon the township of Bacchus Marsh,’’ the proposal read. ‘‘Underbank will comprise a balanced use of land with a sensitive mix of residential, commercial, community and green space.’’ The Weekly understands developer contributions could total up to $13 million, including a major contribution to the Halletts Way extension. The proposal is dependent on a Moorabool Planning Scheme amendment. Kataland first lodged an application with the council in October 2011. ‘‘It has been the subject of extensive consultation with council officers,’’ Kataland’s report said. The council issued a permit to subdivide a 15-hectare section of Underbank Farm for residential lots in May last year. However, the Kataland report notes the council has concerns with potential traffic problems with four connections proposed via Randwick Avenue (to Rosehill Drive and Ascot Avenue), Underbank Boulevard, Mortons Road and the extension of Halletts Way. ‘‘The council is concerned with potential safety issues associated with

INBRIEF Driver dies in car crash A Musk man died in a single-car crash in Dales Creek, near Ballan, on Saturday night. A police spokesman said the man, 64, was driving a Toyota tray utility along Greendale-Blackwood Road when the car veered off the road about 10.20pm. Investigators believe the driver failed to complete a right-hand bend before hitting a tree and rolling down an embankment, trapping he and a 69-year-old male passenger. The driver died at the scene. The passenger was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with serious injuries. An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the passenger suffered head, shoulder and collarbone injuries and was in a stable condition.

Houses were threatened by a large grass fire in Yendon last Thursday afternoon. The blaze burnt through 20 hectares and damaged a house and shed before it was brought under control by 130 firefighters at 5.30pm. Incident controller Steve Hodgetts said a small shed on Dunnstown-Yendon Road was destroyed and a house escaped with smoke and flame damage to part of its exterior. The flames also came within metres of two houses on YendonEgerton Road. District 15 operations officer Archie Conroy said good work by firefighters and prevention work by property owners resulted in the houses being saved. The grass fire eventually ran into a green crop paddock. Investigators believe an electric fence may have started the blaze.

Australian actor Samuel Johnson will ride into Bacchus Marsh this Friday, his first pit stop on a national tour on a unicycle to raise $1 million for breast cancer research. The Crackerjack and Secret Life of Us star is aiming to break a world record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle (15,000 kilometres). Johnson, who will traverse Mt Kosciusko, Ayres Rock and down into Lake Eyre, is scheduled to arrive at Jeff Jones Plants and Produce at 6pm after leaving Federation Square earlier that day. Johnson’s Love Your Sister journey has been inspired by his sister Connie, who was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.

THREE Bacchus Men were arrested after police discovered a backyard drug laboratory during a pre-dawn raid last Wednesday. The men, aged 26, 30 and 32, were arrested after an unspecified amount of cocaine, amphetamine, crystal methamphetamine, cannabis, a .22 calibre handgun and a clandestine laboratory were discovered after police executed a search warrant at 5am as part of Operation Blackwork. Bacchus Marsh police Leading Senior Constable Jim Ross said the arrests highlighted the growing problem of drugs in the town. ‘‘With a forum on ‘ice’ use in Bacchus Marsh coming up next Thursday, this arrest is a very timely reminder of the problems our community face,’’ he said. The three men were remanded in custody to face Ballarat Magistrates Court on May 1 to face trafficking charges. A Melton man, 31, was charged with trafficking and bailed to appear at Ballarat Magistrates Court on May 24. Moorabool and Ballarat detectives and the Ballarat drug response unit were involved in the raid. ■ A female factory worker is in a critical condition in The Alfred hospital after she was mangled in a mulching machine about 4pm on Thursday. Bacchus Marsh CFA’s Tony Prowse said the woman, 25, sustained horrific injuries to her head, chest, upper and lower body. He said CFA crews from Bacchus Marsh, Parwan and Eynesbury and the SES were prepared for the ‘‘confronting scene’’ after the woman was freed by her workmates. ‘‘As far as injuries to people I’ve seen, it’s right up there. We were fully prepared to assist but there’s no time for shock. You just get in there and do your job.’’ A hospital spokesman said the woman was in a critical but stable condition. WorkSafe is investigating.

Melody makers The newly formed Moorabool Light Orchestra is seeking string, woodwind and brass musicians to make beautiful music together. Boasting the talents of the orchestra’s head of brass Andrew Clare, music director and Tourism Moorabool chairman Barry Wilkins and Bacchus Marsh Grammar technical coordinator Robert Wrzaszcz (pictured), the orchestra has attracted plenty of interest from potential players. “It promises to be a very exciting venture and the opportunity for some inspirational and enjoyable community music making,’’ Mr Wilkins said. The orchestra’s first performance will be at next month’s Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival. Festival of Hymns and Sacred Music, Sunday, March 17 at 2pm at St Bernard’s Parish Church, Bacchus Marsh. Residents want fire escape route repairs BY BEN CAMERON AN angry Barkstead resident fears the village could become a major fire hazard unless Moorabool Council improves the main road. Michael Coll has headed up a petition demanding the council step up maintenance of Barkstead Road which he says has been ignored. ‘‘It’s the only safe escape out of town,’’ he said. ‘‘There are three other roads but they cut through thick forest, they’re basically dirt tracks.

‘‘We have no mobile reception out here, so if there’s a fire we’re in real trouble. ‘‘There’s been a total lack of maintenance [of Barkstead Road]. It’s littered with potholes. We’re on the edge of the shire so we get ignored.’’ Mr Coll said the road had been well maintained until about five years ago and had since deteriorated. So far, 36 signatures have been added to the petition. District 15 operations officer Archie Conroy

Here’s one way to solve snarls BY BEN CAMERON AN increasingly busy Grant Street should be made one-way during peak traffic times, according to the Bacchus Marsh Residents Association. Secretary Margaret Scarff said changes to the section between Main and Sydney streets would ease congestion during school drop-off and pick-up times. ‘‘During these times traffic travelling south [would] use Main, Graham and Sydney streets, coming back onto Grant Street well past the bottleneck section,’’ she said. ‘‘The traffic problem is only going to be worse with the Underbank development. The traffic in Grant Street is really grinding to a halt during busy times and has definitely gotten noticeably worse this year as a result of more housing developed in the Darley and Hallets Way area.’’

Bragging rights The search is on for Bacchus Marsh’s best backyard vegie patch, with $500 up for grabs for local growers. The Bacchus Marsh Tourism Association competition is part of the sixth annual Bacchus Marsh Harvest Festival on Sunday, March 17. Locals and visitors will be given the chance to step behind the farm gate, meet growers and indulge themselves. Association president David Durham said Moorabool residents were encouraged to register their details for the competition, which is open to all backyard vegie growers regardless of property size. Commercial growers cannot enter. Last year’s winner was Morris Dal Bosco (pictured with wife Jenny). Judging will take place in the fortnight leading up to the festival. Email your details to info@visit bacchusmarsh.com.au, sign up at Jeff Jones Plants & Produce or download an entry form at visitbacchus marsh.com.au.

Mrs Scarff also called for clearways during busy times. ‘‘I believe it’s only a matter of time before an elderly person gets killed while getting out of his or her car in Grant Street. ‘‘They throw the driver’s side door open without looking or caring about oncoming traffic. Oncoming cars travelling south have nowhere to go when they do this if a truck or car is travelling north.’’ Bacchus Marsh Grammar principal Andrew Neil said the one-way idea would be only a temporary solution. ‘‘It’s an honest idea and has good intentions but I think the best way forward is for the government to build a third crossing of the Western Highway,’’ he said. VicRoads regional director Ewen Nevett said a one-way street would create ‘‘significant road safety and operational issues on an important arterial road’’.

COVERSTORY

Fresh food people Laura Little discovers a growing number of farms giving people an opportunity to select their own fruit straight off the vine

ruit picking has traditionally been viewed as a job for backpackers who were more than happy to spend long days working in the hot sun while they made their way around Australia. But in recent years something has changed. Families eager to cut costs and spend time in the fresh air are flocking to pick-your-own farms around Melbourne to select their fruit at the source. These farms, such as Bacchus Marsh’s Naturipe Fruits provide an opportunity to buy the freshest produce possible at prices lower than the supermarkets. Naturipe Fruits owner, David Durham says fruit picking has become more popular as visitors to his farm share their experiences with family and friends. ‘‘Every year it gets busier. Families seem to enjoy the fresh air and picking the fruit themselves. They like knowing that it’s fresh. ‘‘Most of our visitors are tourists from the western suburbs on day trips to the area. Though, we do have a lot of repeat visitors who live in the town.’’ Melton’s Naomi Matthews and her sons, Dillon, 7, and Riley, 5, are visiting Durham’s farm for the first time. The boys relish the chance to explore the rows of strawberry plants just inside the farm’s entrance in search of the juiciest and fattest strawberries possible. Matthews says the boys love eating fresh fruit and enjoy being able to pick it themselves.

The family grows vegetables at home and raise chickens. ‘‘We are really into growing our own food,’’ Matthews says. ‘‘We drive past the farm all the time and I thought that fruit picking would be a good thing to do.’’ She says a big part of the visit to the farm is explaining to her sons how strawberries grow and how to judge if they are ready to be picked. ‘‘The boys love being able to take [the strawberries] straight from the plant and seeing how the fruit grows. And, we know the fruit we pick here is fresh.’’ Durham opened the farm about 12 years ago with the aim of providing people somewhere to pick their own fruit. ‘‘We thought it would be a good way for us to get help picking our fruit,’’ he says. ‘‘Maintaining the farm is a lot of work and picking is a big expense for us. If people pick a little of the fruit it helps us in a big way.’’ The farm, on The Avenue of Honour, grows strawberries, cherries, peaches, apples and nectarines. The picking season begins in October and finishes in April. Durham says the cherry and strawberry crops are among the most popular each year. Cherries can be picked in November and December, while strawberries are ready from October to April, keeping Durham and his staff busy throughout summer. Peaches and nectarines are only available in December

At Woodend Berry Farm, the phone has been ringing all summer with people hoping to pick their own berries. But a poor yield this year has forced manager David Mulholland to sell the blueberries ready picked. ‘‘A lot of owners don’t like people picking their own fruit because they knock the trees over, but people love doing it,’’ says Mulholland. ‘‘We let them in here because it is easy to repair the damage. Unfortunately this year we haven’t been able to let people pick their own blueberries. It hasn’t been a good season for us. Hopefully next year will be a better year.’’ The farm’s 1000 trees usually produce three

The farm has been operating as a pick-your-own farm for about 20 years, opening its gates to the public in January and February each year. ‘‘We get people coming from Sydney and a lot of repeat visitors,’’ Mulholland says. ‘‘A lot of people say the fact that we are an organic farm plays a big part in their decision to come back.’’ Like Durham, Mulholland has noticed an increase in people looking to pick their own fruit. He believes the country air plays a big part in people’s desire to pick blueberries, while

One of this Council’s first priorities is the development of the Council Plan which will outline the City’s vision, goals and direction for the next four years. As many of you would be aware, Melton’s population is currently growing at around 5.6% per year which means that approximately 6,000 new residents are moving into the municipality each year and our population is set to reach 241,000 by 2031. Growth of this magnitude calls for careful consideration and planning to deliver the appropriate infrastructure and services required for our community to prosper. others relish the chance to ensure they are buying fresh, organic produce. ‘‘People love coming out here and picking the fruit. They enjoy just wandering around the gardens.’’ But, it’s not only large-scale fruit farms that have got people interested in picking their own fruit. Wyndham Vale-based Shoestring Gardening reports an increase in people asking for advice on growing fruit trees at home. ‘‘It’s an urban revolution for growing your own food. People want to grow food they know is fresh and they can trust. They want to know it is full of nutrients,’’ says co-ordinator Karen Bembridge. ‘‘We receive a lot of requests for workshops and can’t keep up with the demand.’’ Bembridge says many people don’t realise they can grow fruit in their garden even if they don’t have lots of land. She says kitchen gardens and community gardens also encourage people to grow and pick their own fruit. I

Ruptured gas pipes prompt call for care BY BEN CAMERON BACCHUS Marsh police have called for greater caution on work sites following three separate incidents involving ruptured gas pipes. Firefighters sealed off a leak at a property on Tate Street when a small excavator struck a gas pipe on January 31.

A second incident occurred on Clifton Drive on February 4 when a worker conducting bore drilling pierced a main gas line about 3.30pm. The incident was not immediately reported and police arrived shortly after the CFA at 5pm. The CFA isolated the leakage and clamped the mains pipe. Emergency services were called to Albert Street

in Darley last Wednesday with reports of a gas smell before 9pm. It is believed workers installing cabling ruptured a mains pipe about 7pm. Authorities have this week urged people to take care near underground gas lines and electrical cables. Workers should know of the location of all gas pipes and electrical cables prior to starting work.

Senior Sergeant John Gibson said that if a rupture occurred, triple-0 should be dialled immediately. ‘‘Everybody should call the Dial Before You Dig hotline [1100], as you never know what’s underground. It’s unusual to see that number of gas problems, although there’s a lot of contract work going on at the moment in town.’’

Mentors help get life on track POSITIVE role models are needed to help young adults in Melton as part of an innovative program that teaches vital life skills. As part of Salvation Army Westcare’s Lead Tenant program, mentors will share a fully furnished fourbedroom house, rent and utility fee free, with young people in Kurunjang. The program is aimed at preparing young adults to live independently, with mentors passing on skills like budgeting, cooking and socialising while remaining a responsible tenant. Caroline Springs vet and Lead Tenant volunteer Bronwen Slack says being involved is rewarding and exciting. Ms Slack moved to Australia from South Africa to study

seven years ago and maintains her active lifestyle working and going to dance classes. Reasons young people are placed in the program can include family illness or crisis, relationship conflict, abuse, abandonment or mental health and substance abuse issues. Program manager Ralph Salera says the Kurunjang program will be the fourth in the western region. Westcare needs four new lead tenants who can continue with their everyday life while modelling mature living skills. Lead tenants, who are helped financially, must be over 21 and prepared to make a 12-month commitment. More details: 9312 3544 or westcarewecare.org.au. — Andria Cozza

Workplace of flood, fire Brad Dalgleish restores order from chaos, writes Melissa Cunningham rescue undertaken in the eye of a storm or in the midst of a blazing fire is all in a day’s work for north-west SES controller Brad Dalgleish. But the selfless Caroline Springs resident says seeing the gratitude on a person’s face makes his job of trawling floodwaters, attending traumatic car accidents and climbing on damaged roofs worthwhile. ‘‘Most of the people I come into contact with are in extremely traumatic situations and they are just grateful for your help,’’ Dalgleish says. ‘‘You might have no call-outs for two weeks and then you’re inundated with 10 calls in one night. That’s one of the greatest parts of the job: no two days are ever the same.’’ Dalgleish, 38, joined the SES in 1990 as a fresh-faced 16-year-old, eager to obtain his Queen’s Scout

A

‘It was extremely rewarding being able to help the people in my own community when they were in need’ badge. As a Brimbank SES volunteer he was soon able to gain the hours of community service needed for the honour. But the experience also inspired him to become a leader in his community and continue to help others. In the past 21 years, he has travelled Australia for this cause. He cites the Black Saturday bushfires, Queensland floods and the 2011 Christmas Day hail storms in the north-west among his most memorable call-outs.

During the Christmas Day storms he led a team of more than 400 volunteers. ‘‘We had more than 1800 calls within a few hours,’’ Dalgleish says. ‘‘We also had hundred of volunteers responding to all kinds of incidents over the week following Christmas. It was extremely rewarding being able to help people in my own community.’’ Last year, Dalgleish was awarded an emergency service medal in the Queen’s Birthday honours and he received a long-service award from the SES. In light of recent fires deliberately lit in Brimbank Park, Dalgleish warns residents to remain vigilant as the hottest month of the year begins. ‘‘We may be urban, but we do have rural areas and grassfires can have a huge impact on the community.’’ To become an SES volunteer, visit ses.vic.gov.au/volunteer

FREDDY’S FRUIT MELTON

TIMEOUT

A bit too heavy on the cheese A secret squad takes on the LA mob, writes Myke Bartlett he good guys get nasty in this colourful tale of Los Angeles gangsters and tough-nosed cops. Ruben (Zombieland) Fleischer’s crime drama sees Josh Brolin as the last good cop in town, recruiting a secret squad to stop the mafia by any means necessary. Top of their hit list is Sean Penn’s mafia boss, who has most of LA on payroll. To bring him down, the squad will steal, spy, and blow up many things. Those expecting another L.A. Confidential will be disappointed. While there are nods to film noir greats, Fleischer’s approach is far more cartoonish. The violence is extreme but garish, the cinematography is primary colours and sharp shadows,

and the characters are paper thin. We’re in for a romp, not a tragedy. Penn gorges on a cheesy script, more Dr Evil than Don Corleone. Brolin is an admirable lead, but the cinematic charisma comes from Ryan Gosling as his dubious wingman and Emma Stone as Penn’s etiquette instructor, although, sadly, her character’s defining quality appears to be that she’s played by Emma Stone. Surprisingly lightweight given its topic, Gangster Squad is rarely gritty but frequently good, pulpy fun.

INSIDE&OUT ●

Here’s a service that’s out of the box Rod Easdown finds a world of new music at his fingertips t took me about 15 seconds to become a Pandora convert. Pandora is a free online music library with a big difference; you don’t get to choose the music you listen to. Rather you enter a track, composer or musical genre that suits your mood and it serves you up a playlist of music of that ilk. It is, if you will, a radio station that plays only music you want to listen to. And if your mood swings from tragic country songs to thrash metal, all you do is create a second ‘radio station’ in your profile and there it is. Now I mainly listen to classical music and most of Pandora’s offerings are anything but, yet I still found a heap of music I liked, much of which I’d never heard before. For example, I entered Karl Jenkins in the menu and it started me out with one of his compositions, and then moved on to Philip Glass. Then came a composer I’d never heard of named Morten Lauridsen. There followed part of the soundtrack of Gladiator and Edward Scissorhands, and then some Enya.

I

All of this was entirely acceptable, but the best came from two other composers I’d never heard of, Christopher Tin and Zoe Keating. I liked them so much I clicked on the link and bought the CDs from Amazon. Then I entered Arvo Part and got some more Philip Glass, some violin music from China and a bit of Erik Satie. The thing I most liked was the sheer volume of new music I was hearing. I often listen to the request program on Classic FM because I sometimes hear interesting, unfamiliar music, but on Pandora I was getting these every second or third track. Sign up for the free service and you get a short ad every few tracks. If you take the subscription ($36 a year or $3.99 a month) the ads disappear and you get higher download quality. Pandora is available for computer, iPhone or android, iPod Touch and several other platforms, and most listeners use it on mobile devices. And there are a lot – at last count 175 million. And now, 175 million and one. More details: pandora.com

TIMEOUT

Key to the doors

Love a bargain? ★★★ Paul Mas Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 2011

Ben Thomas busts a few myths about cellar doors t doesn’t take much to convince me to hop in the car and visit a cellar door or two. Even less effort is required during the long days and warm afternoons of summer. Just as wines differ between producers, so do cellar doors. Experiences can range between the great, where you learn about the wines and find a new favourite, to the downright awful, where a disinterested pourer talks at you five minutes before you leave, wondering why you bothered in the first place. I’ve learnt a few ways to get the best out of a cellar door visit. Here are my top tips.

I

You don’t need to taste all of the wines If you don’t like sav blanc, just say so and start with the other whites, or if pinot noir is your great wine love, jump straight in. Also, if

time is tight and you have a lunch reservation to make, don’t be afraid to let the pourer know so they can run you through the wines quickly. The more the person pouring the wines knows about your circumstances, the better your experience will be.

To spit or swallow? There’s no need to finish any wine poured at a cellar door. Your host won’t be offended – the wines are there to be tasted. If spitting in front of a room of strangers isn’t for you, have a good sniff and a little sip before you commit to a large swig. If the wine isn’t to your taste, find the spittoon and tip out the rest of the glass. For the record, I always spit. Even if I’m not driving. I find that my judgment gets a little cloudy after a couple of glasses. I like to savour the day with my favourite of the tastings when I get home.

Temporary carers needed!

If you like a wine, ask questions about it The world of wine can feel intimidating at times, especially when talking about it, but my experience once winemakers get started talking about wine it’s hard to get them to shut up. A good ice-breaker is to ask how the vintage compared to previous years.

Can you ask for a second taste? Of course you can – and it’s encouraged. At wineries with a large range, it’s not always easy to remember all the wines you’ve tasted, so a re-taste is in order. Or if you’d like to taste the entry-level chardonnay with the premium offering in isolation – something I like to do – just say the word. ■ To read more reviews, visit theweeklyreview.com.au/wine

(Pays d’Oc, France) $6.99; 13.5% From a single vineyard named Nicole just outside Montagnac, which lies halfway between Bezieres and Montpellier on the Mediterranean coast. Simply, it’s a gooddrinking dry red with a French accent. Look hard and you’ll find cabernet sauvignon’s blackcurrant and dark berry characters, but at under $7 why bother? Rather than analyse the wine, just enjoy its sun-baked berry and plum flavours, decent structure and high drinkability. It’s a ripping-value wine. Charming proportions It’s where space and style come together in perfect harmony, writes Carole Levy ith a creek meandering through, Darlingsford estate is an appealing pocket of town and this double-storey house with brick and render combo fits in nicely. A weeping cherry and the bright splash of nandinas out front put out the welcome mat in a street lined with other garden-proud properties. A tiled entry foyer has cavity walls defining entry to a carpeted lounge room (with feature wall); opposite is a powder room — handily placed since the other bathrooms are upstairs. Next is the living hub with floating

W

floorboards and garage access. The only downstairs bedroom (with storage) is off this and would work well as a study or perhaps a guest room. The family-meals zone has plenty of windows bringing in garden views and has a relaxed, easyupkeep feel. Next to a laundry with storage, the kitchen has a two-door pantry, dishwasher, 900mm gas cooktop and stainless-steel wall oven. Up top, via carpeted stairs, there are three bedrooms and the big, bright main bathroom with heat lamp. Each

secondary bedroom is a good size and has wardrobes. An airy retreat space with balcony access qualifies the main bedroom as a bit of a haven, particularly with views to the lake. It also has a walk-in wardrobe and a well-lit ensuite. The back and side yards are all about escaping the hassle of weekend mowing. They’re given over to ‘wall-to-wall’ pebbles, softened by garden beds. A row of cypresses marches along the back fence and provides a nice feeling of privacy. And the side yard has undoubted potential for knocking up a pergola.

Housing policies up for debate A meeting of key politicians will address questions surrounding housing affordability and growth he announcement of September 14 as the federal election date by Prime Minister Julia Gillard has heightened the importance of parties to articulate their policies on housing and infrastructure funding, one of the major factors of job creation, according to the Urban Development Institute of Australia. A conference to be hosted by UDIA in Melbourne next month will provide a chance to explore the policies being put forward by major parties. ‘‘Australia is facing a battle on three fronts to provide for the forecast expansion of its population by 2050 to 35.9 million,’’ says UDIA executive director Tony De Domenico. ‘‘There is a massive backlog of infrastructure which is leaving capital cities in gridlock. The cost of the great Australian dream has moved beyond an increasing number of people,’’ he said.

T

Federal Housing Minister Brendan O’Connor, former prime minister Kevin Rudd, federal shadow minister for the environment and climate change Greg Hunt, Victorian Planning Minister Matthew Guy and Queensland’s Planning Reform Minister Ian Walker will be keynote speakers. Julie Katz, national president of the UDIA, said: ‘‘The conference will profile views of government, industry and the community to open up a national public conversation on the pressing issues of population growth which impacts on every Australian. ‘‘We see the conference as being an important and critical event to review policies on housing affordability, the development of robust and sustainable planning policies, the development of sustainable employment and skills retention and the provision of funding for urgently needed infrastructure.’’

Growth surge: A growing population requires infrastructure around housing — a national conference in March opens the debate.

TRIPPING

All aboard for abundant food and fun Vanuatu and Noumea, South Pacific cruise Getting there: Fly Melbourne to Sydney then board Radiance of the Seas More details: royalcaribbean.com.au

BY REBECCA MILLER efore departing on a cruise there are many things you’re told to bring: sea sickness tablets (just in case . . . I was fine) clothing for ‘formal nights’, snorkel, etcetera. What’s not mentioned is a huge appetite. I’ve never seen or eaten as much food as I did while cruising the South Pacific in December. Buffet breakfast and lunch daily, and, let’s not forget the three-course dinners available, or another buffet, or dining at one of the speciality restaurants (paid). The range of food wasn’t the only thing that impressed my fellow travellers and I — there’s plenty to keep everyone occupied. On cruise days travellers can do as little or as much as they like. The ship I was on —Radiance of the Seas — had a rock climbing wall, mini golf, basketball court, jogging track, fitness centre, multiple pools and bars, a nightclub, cinema, theatre, library, board games area, casino and shops. There are also separate baby and teen rooms.

B

Ship to shore: Radiance of the Seas was a delight to be on. If that’s not enough there are organised daily activities, including trivia, Suduko challenges, dance classes, cooking demonstrations, bingo and scavenger hunts. And that’s just for the four days at sea.

Picture: supplied by Royal Caribbean.

For most of my 11-day cruise we were island hopping from Noumea and Isle of Pines in New Caledonia to Lifou (Loyalty Island) and Mystery Island, Champagne Bay and Vila in Vanuatu. ‘Tender boats’ took everyone back and forth to

each island. Multiple trips allow passengers to stay as long as they like, just make sure you’re back in time to depart! With the water temperature at most islands the same as outside, it’s a pleasure to dive into the sparkling ocean. Snorkelling is recommended and we saw colourful coral, clown fish, stingrays and turtles. There are also city, cultural, fishing and waterfall tours if swimming is not your thing. Neither my fellow travellers nor I could complain about service on board, and all staff were friendly and helpful. As for accommodation, you get what you pay for. Cabins can be interior and exterior, with or without windows or balconies, and suit singles to families. The best thing about cruising is that most things are included in the cost, so it’s great value.

BY TEO PELLIZZERI THE ladder may show a big gap but Gisborne sent a message to St Anthonys on Saturday that the premiership race for Gisborne District Cricket Association B grade is still close. Heading into the weekend’s top-two clash, St Anthonys had scored 700 more runs for the season than Gisborne but fell into a 6-28 hole and squeaked out just 108 after choosing to bat. Gisborne is poised to claim the first-innings points after reaching stumps 4-101 in reply. Victory for Gisborne will all but mathematically lock up second place. The Dragons (54 points) trail St Anthonys (72) by 18 points. Peter Sankey (4-24) and Darcy Nolan (3-16) produced the devastating opening spell that reduced St Anthonys to 4-14, then 6-28. Wes Greig (19) lifted the St Anthonys innings onto life support but the team still fell at 8-60. It would soon be 9-68. Step in Jeremy Hibbert, who saved St Anthonys from a double-figure score by hitting 49 in a 40-run stand for the last wicket with Rod Oosterhoff, who finished zero not-out. The Dragons lost Daniel Trevillian (10) and Ben Robinson (4) to be 2-29 but steadied with Vernon (41) and Steven Docherty (26) getting the score to within touching distance of first-innings points, although both went before stumps. Cam Clayton has 2-21 for St Anthonys. Action continues this Saturday. At Wallan, Macedon made 197 batting first, with Taylor Stevenson (46) and Rob Belcher (42) top-scoring. Macedon is well placed to hold fourth spot regardless of the result: fifth-placed Riddell needs 266 to win its match against Sunbury United. In C grade, Ashfield has 252 to defend against Sunbury United after Jason King scored 79 and Graham Cutler 58. The third-placed team still needs a slip-up from second-placed East Sunbury to break into the top two. East Sunbury is 0-2 chasing Bacchus Marsh’s 197 all-out. Ladder leader Diggers Rest Bulla Village bowled out Rupertswood for 130 and reached 1-19 in reply at stumps.

Desperate dash: St Anthony’s Paulie Hetherington scrambles home as Gisborne’s Darcy Nolan waits at the stumps. Picture: Shawn Smits

Late surge lifts Sunbury BY TEO PELLIZZERI SUNBURY United may have slammed the finals door on Bacchus Marsh but the battle for the top four in the McIntyre Cup is still delicately poised between Woodend and Sunbury. Late wickets kept Sunbury in the mix against Riddell after being bowled out for 128 batting first in Gisborne District Cricket Association’s top division. Woodend is two wickets away from sealing first-innings points against Wallan and poised to go chasing an outright win in the penultimate round of the season. Sunbury (fourth, 42 points) has a worse percentage than Woodend (fifth, 36) and cannot afford to slip up should Woodend seal a firstinnings win. Sunbury lasted 49.1 overs at the weekend as it made 128, undone by Heath Wadden (5-17) and Cameron Moran (3-42). Sunbury hit back with the ball but key batsmen Matt Darby (10no) and Wadden (5no) will resume Riddell’s chase at 4-60 this weekend. Woodend made a horror start with three early wickets against Wallan but recovered to

put up 158 at Gilbert Gordon Oval. Luke Barker (49) and Adam Johnstone (32) top scored. But the total now looks like a winner after Jamie Stembridge roared through Wallan’s top order with 5-29, leaving the visitors 8-62 at stumps. At Maddingley Park, Bacchus Marsh (sixth, 33 points) was already in need of favourable results to make the top four but is in a battle to win its own match after Sunbury United posted 9-389. Lance Watts (114) and Ryan Billinghurst (106) came together at 2-40 for United and piled on 198 for the third wicket, before Billinghurst was run out. James Hughes (44) kept runs coming in the lower order. James Bailey (3-84) had the best figures on an expensive day for the Bulls’ bowlers. Bottom pair Romsey and Rupertswood are competing in the other match, with Romsey posting 239 against the all-butmathematically-relegated Rupertswood team. Matthew Brundell (56) and Brent Tonkin (47) top-scored for Romsey and John Lane took 5-53 for Rupertswood.

INBRIEF

Lions grab lead

BCA MELTON’S bowlers came through with the goods as Altona capitulated to lose by 116 runs in the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association. The Lions claimed top spot on the South West First XI table with Saturday’s win after Caulfield suffered an embarrassing defeat to Malvern. Melton (51 points) leads the ladder on percentage from Werribee (51) and Caulfield (45). Altona resumed 0-28 chasing 215 but added just 11 runs before losing top scorer Adam Brown (31). Altona reached 3-75 but Duncan Harrison’s dismissal of John Varchione (26) sparked a collapse of 5-5 that hollowed out the batting card. Caulfield needed 210 to beat Malvern but lost seven wickets for eight runs to be reduced from 1-36 to 8-44 on the way to being all-out for 80. Melton plays Brighton (fourth, 39 points) this weekend in its last twodayer before finals.

Brian Wheelahan’s 86 held the Darley innings together as the Lions posted 212 on day one against Mt Clear at Ballarat University. Darley fell to 2-3 early before Wheelahan and Matt Cape (39) went about resurrecting the innings with a 58-run partnership. Wheelahan and Ben Hall (20) shared a 57-run stand for the sixth wicket.

WDCA Melton Centrals could not build a big partnership in its top order and paid the price, finishing with 161 against Bellbridge in B1 turf. Centrals’ best were Daniel Vasjuta (36), Adam Hulett (35) and Mitchell Parks (34).

Worth a shout: Melton’s Paul Halfhide appeals for an Altona wicket.

Rockbank faces a mammoth chase this weekend after St Johns posted 5-345 on day one of A grade Synthetic. David Temby sent the Rams bowlers to all corners of Grey Reserve as he hit 190no.

Nervous clubs peek over their shoulder BY LANCE JENKINSON WHILE Australia’s professional sports reel in the wake of last week’s Australian Crime Commission report on performance-enhancing drugs in sport, the flow-on effect to the suburban level is still to be measured. Eradicating, or even detecting, the use of illicit or performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) at a grassroots level of sport is no mean feat, according to Victorian Rugby League general manager Brent Silva. The VRL was alarmed at ACC findings last week of widespread use of PEDs in Australian professional sport, but Silva was confident their use was not an issue in community rugby league in Victoria. ‘‘In terms of performance-enhancing products, you’re more likely to get it at the higher level, where players are on the fringe and trying to

make a living out of the game,’’ Silva said. ‘‘At the higher level, when you’re trying to earn a contract, where it could be the difference between $50,000 a year contract and a $200,000 a year contract, there is an incentive.’’ When a player or an official joins a local rugby league club, they sign a document stating they will abide by the VRL’s rules and regulations. ‘‘Even at our level, we come under the WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] code, but ASADA generally don’t test at the community level,’’ Silva said. ‘‘So, you’re not tested for that sort of thing.’’ AFL Victoria responded last week by reiterating that any competition managed under the Laws of Australian Football is bound by the antidoping code. AFL Victoria and ASADA have agreed on a testing program for the VFL. However, suburban and country leagues do not have the same level of resourcing. ‘‘If a player has any doubt whatso-

ever, then he should not consume a medication or supplement without first seeking medical or professional advice on whether it contains a banned performance-enhancing substance,’’ AFL Victoria said in its statement. ‘‘Community football players can also be tested by ASADA as the competitions in which they play are operated and managed under the Laws of Australian Football.’’ Further questions were put to management of the Riddell District and Ballarat Football Leagues on Friday but an official response was still to be issued when The Weekly went to print on Tuesday. Ballarat league executive Rod Ward told the Ballarat Courier that the league ran more training programs than any other country football league in Australia, including the use of drugs and alcohol on mental health. “It’s not because we’re worried about the

behaviour of our Ballarat Football League players but because we feel that through football, we have the ability to effect change,” he said. The Victorian Rugby Union, governing body of community rugby in this state, wants to ensure the use of PEDs does not filter down to the club level or its representative teams. VRU community rugby manager Charlie Bamford plans to meet club officials in the leadup to the new season to discuss clubs putting their medical staff on a register that is easily accessible for the VRU. ‘‘Given the recent reports that have been tabled, this will be a topic of discussion and we will be placing an emphasis on the clubs to ensure they are exercising their duty of care in these areas. We will be asking them to, with the issues we’ve faced in the last week, register all their medical people so that we are across that.’’ — with Teo Pellizzeri and Melanie Whelan

Talent runs deep as Western Jets eye a promising season BY LANCE JENKINSON WESTERN Jets region manager Shane Sexton has been involved with the TAC Cup for too long to be lured into attempting crystal-ball predictions for his teams. The wider view is the Jets will have a successful season under new coach Torin Baker and with the deepest playing list in the club’s 21-year history. Sexton said it would be impossible

to give a ballpark estimation of where the Jets could finish until seeing the talent stocks of other clubs. ‘‘We think whatever happens this year, we’re going to have a good year,’’ he said. ‘‘Whether that equates to playing in finals or winning half of our games or most of our games, we don’t know that yet because it’s a very good competition and every time you play, you play against a direct opponent that’s

very good and you play against a team that’s very good.’’ No doubt the Jets are better placed than any other time in Sexton’s 13-year tenure with the western suburbs’ elite under-18 club. Not since the club had access to parts of the north-west region before the inclusion of the Calder Cannons have the Jets enjoyed a deeper talent pool to choose from. The club will finalise its roster in the

coming weeks and has indicated that it will provide a path for more players than ever before. ‘‘There’s no doubt that our depth of talent is growing year by year,’’ Sexton said. ‘‘We think this time around we’ll probably pick a bigger squad, because of the depth of talent. ‘‘Years gone by we might have picked mid- to high-40s in terms of player numbers; this year we might pick well

in excess of 50 kids and it could be 54 or 55. I’m more than happy to say the depth of talent now is far greater than what it was.’’ The Jets are benefiting from a boom in growth of the western suburbs. Parts of the west that Sexton drove freely around a decade ago are now built up. That’s a bonanza for the Jets, who have done it tough since the arrival of the Cannons.
