Plans sink into ‘super’ hole MAJOR projects are likely to be stalled as Moorabool Council battles to plug a $2.4 million superannuation ‘black hole’. Outgoing East Moorabool ward councillor Russ Hendry says he fears projects like the proposed Bacchus Marsh Aquatic Centre could be pushed back, with council’s liability payment due by July next year. As reported by the Weekly, under a Vision Super scheme, which ended in 1993, payments to council employees during retirement are fixed by a formula based on a final salary and the council has to pick up any shortfall. Councillors recently decided to proceed with stage one of the aquatic centre if state and

federal government funding of $8 million was confirmed before the end of 2013. But a council report seen by the Weekly said services could be reduced and rates increased to fund the super shortfall. Cr Hendry said all operational works would be affected. ‘‘It will filter down,’’ he said. ‘‘It will diminish drastically council’s ability to conduct major projects, no doubt.’’ While the council won’t make a decision until a Municipal Association of Victoria taskforce completes its investigation, it has been advised to borrow the money to pay the shortfall over 10 years. Other options included paying the full amount by July, or over 15 years. The report projected the council would eventually cough up $3.1 million in

repayments by 2023-24. ‘‘The only option for council to fund the unfunded liability is to borrow funds,’’ the report stated. ‘‘While this is within council’s borrowing capacity it may impact on our capacity to borrow in the future. ‘‘If the MAV taskforce does not achieve some of its objectives and reduce the financial impact of this call to council, then we may need to consider a revised budget to borrow the funds in 2012-13 and prepare for the repayment of the borrowings in future years.’’ Chief executive Rob Croxford said the council could reduce renewal expenditure to fund the shortfall. It paid a $471,433 Vision Super liability in 2010 and has set aside $20 million in its strategic financial plan for major projects, including the aquatic centre.

Thieves back for more Bacchus Marsh police are looking into burglaries at the Elaine General Store. They say the store has been hit twice in the past few months, most recently on Sunday night, when the owners discovered thieves on the premises. Nothing was stolen. Information to 5366 4500.

Campers warned on fire-lighting Visitors to Moorabool’s national parks and state forests are being urged to take care when lighting campfires. Department of Sustainability and Environment duty officer Kendra Dean said spring was notorious for unpredictable weather. “About 10 per cent of fires in Victoria’s parks and forests are started by campfire escapes so it’s important that people keep informed of the current weather and fire conditions and also the forecast conditions in the days following their visit.” For details on burns and fires in Victoria and general fire safety advice, phone 1800 240 667.

Two die in collision

Leadership from disadvantage Police are seeking witnesses to a fatal collision involving two cars in Balliang East last Tuesday. The accident, which happened shortly before noon, forced the closure of the Bacchus Marsh-Geelong Road for most of the day. Investigators said a Holden Commodore sedan heading north and a south-bound four-wheeldrive towing a boat collided about 11.50am. The driver of the 4WD, believed to be a man in his 50s, and a rear passenger, a girl in her teens, died at the scene. Another passenger in the 4WD, a woman in her 50s, was taken to hospital. The occupants of the Commodore, a Breakwater man, 43, and a Breakwater woman, 26, were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining occupant of the 4WD, a Brookfield woman, 52, was taken to Geelong Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Rates invitation a token gesture: MP Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland has described the state government’s invitation to join a committee to develop new guidelines for the use of differential rates as a token gesture. The Weekly reported in August that an amendment before the State Parliament could allow the local government minister to stop councils imposing differential rates. The Local Government Act 1989 allows councils to set differential rates for different types of properties to encourage development, with excavation industry rates currently three times more than farm land rates. Ms Hartland said the committee should have been formed before the amendment went to Parliament. ‘‘It’s too much power for one minister,’’ she said. ‘‘It gives the government the opportunity to impose higher rates on developments they oppose, like wind farms.’’ Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said a significant increase in the use of differential rates had created a complex web of different rates across Victoria.

Single track doubles trouble COMMUTERS are calling for more services and a second track on the Ballarat line. With V/Line reporting a 126 per cent increase in patronage on the line in the past five years, Chris Huculak is urging the government to install a second track to improve reliability. ‘‘The Ballarat line deserves a regular train service — once every 15 minutes, peak; once every 20 minutes, off-peak — and Bacchus Marsh would benefit from that,’’ Mr Huculak said. ‘‘We’ll only have that if the line is doubled from Southern Cross to Ballarat.” V/Line statistics show the line failed to meet punctuality standards in the year to July. Monthly benchmarks were met just four times. Mr Huculak said a single-track line provided a single point of failure. ‘‘If a train breaks down on a single track it can shut down the whole service for hours at a time,’’ he said. ‘‘Two lines provides a minimum level of fault tolerance.’’ V Line’s annual report found 3.1 million people used the Ballarat line in 2010-11, the largest patronage increase (10 per cent) of any line and up from 5.1 per cent the previous year. Moorabool Council has thrown its support behind a new rail plan, Fast Track Ballarat, which demands a second platform for Bacchus Marsh and a passing loop for Ballan. Committee for Ballarat chairman Tony Chew said regional rail users needed a dedicated Ballarat to Melbourne service that met commuter expectations. “Specifically, we are looking for reliable internet connectivity for the length of the journey, a second platform at Bacchus Marsh, a passing loop near Ballan, duplication of the Ballarat-Warrenheip section of the track, additional rolling stock and electrification between Melton and Melbourne.” The committee wants a feasibility study to investigate full duplication of the line. Register support at committeeforballarat.com or tweet @comm4Ballarat. V/Line and Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder were unavailable for comment.

THE parents of a Bacchus Marsh toddler fighting serious health issues have been amazed by support from people around the country. After a Bacchus Marsh event which raised thousands of dollars to help with treatment, Noah Barlow, 2, and his mum, Kat, last week appeared on national television to publicise the family’s brave battle. As reported by the Weekly, Noah was born 11 weeks premature and suffers from multiple allergies and seizures. He is tube-fed every few hours and doctors believe he could have mitochondrial disease, a potentially fatal condition that reduces the body’s ability to produce energy needed to function properly. He appeared on Channel Seven’s news last Monday night, and tens of thousands of Victorians learnt how the community had rallied around the Barlow family. The next day, Noah sat on the couch with his mum for an interview on Sunrise.

Brave battle: Mark and Kat Barlow with Noah, who suffers from allergies and seizures. Ms Barlow said her boy was in fine form. ‘‘He was full of beans and was dashing all around the studio, which was good as he’s so different, day to day. ‘‘He’s still recovering from a mini-stroke two weeks ago, but he’s

had some spectacularly good days, which we’re very grateful for. ‘‘He had a day recently where he had no seizures and didn’t vomit once, which is a miracle. Some days he can’t even move.’’

MOORABOOL music lovers will be treated to a young band on the rise when Crooked Saint plays at the Baby Black Cafe on Saturday. The band comes to Bacchus Marsh after a huge 18 months, with two EPs in the can, Triple J and ABC airplay and shows at Los Angeles’ House of Blues and Whisky A-Go-Go. Starting out as a solo project, Crooked Saint has morphed into a larger beast, with guitarist Johnny Grant and drummer Troy Ramaekers joining Tim Wheatley’s vocal and guitar core. The band has supported everyone from Ian Moss and The Black Sorrows to Tim Freedman. ‘‘Travelling around solo with some of my favourite songwriters in the country is an amazing feeling,’’ Wheatley said. ‘‘Tim Freedman was simply awesome at taking on a stubborn crowd. His intelligence and sharp tongue is very intimidating. He commands attention.’’ More details: 5367 5156

COUNCILELECTION2012

Phil Flack, businessman

Paul Tatchell, 53, businessman

Gail Fiander, 40, businesswoman

Central Moorabool voters are entitled to a councillor who lives in the district, is readily available to listen and will return calls. I am an independent candidate with no agenda other than to do the best for residents. Among my credits, I’m an executive handling multimillion-dollar budgets, a small-business owner, Ballan Autumn Festival sponsorship co-ordinator, bowling club treasurer, historical society committee member, and in the CFA. I support growing Central Moorabool with proper infrastructure, keeping its rural character and charm while attracting businesses and tourists. I will hold regular public meetings and work with council for better planning and services at less cost.

My forebears settled in Ballan in 1852, building the old post & telegraph office, which is still in our family after five generations. I am married with two daughters, am a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club and Ballan Shire Historical Society. As I’m now semi-retired, I have the time and capacity to involve myself in working with the community to provide needed amenities. I have been an engineer, a maths/science teacher, TAFE senior administrator and have owned my own businesses for many years, working for some time in Asia. I bring experience, an independent view and a desire to best serve the municipality at heart.

I understand the importance of proper evaluation and planning. I have a social conscience and appreciate the responsibility of giving back to the local community. I understand the challenges and rewards of growing a family in a rural environment, and it’s that environment we need to protect and nurture. A councillor is an advocate for the residents. All issues are important; it’s the urgency and need that will produce the priority. Regarding traffic congestion, a simple drive through Bacchus Marsh clearly shows the result of short-term planning. The solution is always going to be a compromise. It’s a shame that the situation in Bacchus Marsh has become as bitter as it is.

I am running for council so that issues particular to central ward can be addressed. I have the knowledge and the skills required to represent the people of Central ward, Moorabool. The biggest issue facing this ward is infrastructure. We require accessible and usable roads that are properly maintained. We must find long-term solutions to drainage problems of flooding, back flow from storm water, road washouts, etc. We need accessible footpaths in township areas, bike paths and/or safe roads for cyclists. Current assets need to be improved to meet current legislation requirements. Another problem is the failure of the council to complete tasks within a reasonable time.

Who’s to blame for eyesore?

Heat brings out first slippery visitors

BY BEN CAMERON

RESIDENTS are being urged to watch out for snakes as the weather gets warmer. Snake catcher Jason Blainey said that during summer he often fielded up to seven calls a day to collect dangerous snakes. Mr Blainey, who covers Moorabool and Melton shires, warned residents to keep an eye out for three specific species. ‘‘The most common species in Moorabool are red bellies, brown and tiger snakes,’’ he said. ‘‘People should keep their eyes peeled, especially when out walking [near] creeks and waterways.’’ He said lawns should be well maintained as long grass and rubbish were a haven for snakes. A Department of Sustainability spokesman said spring weather also meant many copperheads were out and about. Senior scientist Nick Clemann said snakes were most common in rural areas and that all three species were dangerously venomous. ‘‘But it is rare for them to bite people,’’ he said. ‘‘Being aware that snakes may be around, and being informed about how to react to them, are the most important aspects of managing snakes.” Snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act. MOORABOOL Council will investigate if it’s responsible for a derelict building in Ballan. Resident Gail Fiander last week asked the council if it was duty-bound to repair the eyesore in a reserve off Blow Court. ‘‘It’s in a horrible state of disrepair,’’ Mrs Fiander said. ‘‘It’s been very badly vandalised. ‘‘There are broken bottles everywhere, benches have been smashed up, there’s graffiti. Glass appears to have been removed from the frames. Is it on council land? Is it a council asset?’’ Chief executive Rob Croxford said the council would look into the matter. Meanwhile, down the road, the Ballan Golf Club has a new roof and president Michael Newman hopes the building will be operating at full capacity by the middle of next month. It’s five weeks since the roof was blown off in a storm. Play has not been affected, but all business has been conducted out of a small hut. ‘‘We’ve been a bit annoyed nothing has happened so far, but we’ve been approved for insurance so repairs will begin soon,’’ Mr Newman said.

Who’s responsible?: Gail Fiander and son Tristan inside the vandalised building.

Dementia demand, spread ever-rising BY BEN CAMERON DEMENTIA is no longer a problem just for the elderly, according to a local health expert. With residents in their 40s among the 284 registered cases in Moorabool, the council’s health and community care (HACC) co-ordinator Robyn Salt has warned that dementia can affect anyone. Stressing the importance of early education, she said that while diagnosis was unsettling, many people could still live fulfilling lives. As reported by the Weekly, council projections show about 1500 residents will have dementia by 2050. Mrs Salt said she was aware of two sufferers in their 40s in Moorabool. ‘‘This is not just an older person’s disease.’’ With dementia cases expected to increase by 428 per cent by 2050 in Moorabool, Mrs Salt said HACC’s services were already in great demand. ‘‘There’s a growing demand on our dementia services,’’ she said. ‘‘And it’s only going to get bigger.’’

PICTURE: MARCO DE LUCA

Mrs Salt said dementia was ‘‘no longer the end of the road’’, but fear stopped people from getting help. ‘‘It can be a bump or a change in direction,’’ she said. ‘‘There’s a fear that you’ll be locked up. There are many people in the local area who have lived fulfilling lives after a diagnosis. ‘‘The benefits of accessing education programs early in your diagnosis will help you to build your awareness of the disease and its progression as well as help you to accept and manage the disease as well as possible.’’ Mrs Salt said it was also important that carers received tailored respite. ‘‘The carer can fall over with no respite and the person is left to deal with it alone,’’ she said. ‘‘The days of simply putting on a DVD and having a cuppa as a form of respite are long gone. ‘‘A carer with dementia from a farming background doesn’t want to sit around talking about knitting.’’

Marsh on the TV map Annette Langlands has received the go-ahead for a regional program on public television Channel 31. Ms Langlands approached the station earlier this year with the idea of a show about Melton and Bacchus Marsh. ‘‘They were excited about the concept because they don’t have a show like this at the moment,’’ the Melton resident said. She’s hoping to model Weekly with Annette on other midday show formats and wants to put questions to local doctors, veterinarians and gardening experts. Ms Langlands hopes to branch out to other communities through human interest stories. Send questions to PO Box 219, Melton or weekly@hotmail.com.au.

Re: Moorabool elections: More satisfied, fewer names (Weekly, October 2):

Re: Thirty years in Bacchus Marsh (Weekly, September 25):

‘‘More satisfied’’? . . . when the latest resident satisfaction survey reveals below-average results in comparison to the rest of the state in all key areas? I don’t think so. We are sadly short-changed regarding good councillor representation. Moorabool Shire needs better representatives, as consecutive poor resident satisfaction surveys indicate. The Municipal Association of Victoria needs to reassess how to attract better, more talented, younger and female candidates, rather than the same tired, poorly performed repeats. Damien Strangio

Thanks to Exergen and Mantle Mining for looking to bring much needed jobs (particularly for our youth) and investment to the Marsh. Please ignore the noise from the small minority who don’t understand the economic and environmental benefits such technology can offer.

Well, Mr Strangio, why don’t you put your hand up? You just want to bag anyone who has a go. Seems to me that this council has reflected the community’s wishes and you are in the minority. Bacchus Marsh has seen good development recently, and if only Woolpack Road extension was completed to save us from the drama of trucks on our streets. Wish all the sitting guys were returned. In any case, five out of six of those standing support Woolpack Road. Again proving you are a minority.

Cancer cause needs your help With Breast Cancer Awareness Month kicking off, it’s the perfect time for us to say a huge thank you to the community for your support. We’re proud to say we have 77 McGrath breast-care nurses working nationally; they have helped support more than

16,000 Australian families through their breast cancer experience in the past four years. Another five McGrath breast-care nurses are to be placed in the coming months. We seek your help to support more families experiencing breast cancer as we need 150 McGrath breast-care nurses. Chasing the dream: Ashleigh Marshall, pictured with dad Clarence, will sing in the US in November. Picture: Marco De Luca

PROFILE ●

Dream comes true as singer heads to US Music is a family affair for Ashleigh, writes Melissa Cunningham inging has been part of Ashleigh Marshall’s life for as long as she can remember. nHer family’s Caroline Springs house has always been full of the music of her performing parents. Next month, the year 7 Catholic Regional College student and aspiring singer will follow her own dream all the way to the bright lights of the US. The 12-year-old was one of 22 children selected to be part of the Australian Institute of Performing Arts’ ‘Glee Club Juniors.’ As part of the three-week performing arts workshop, the children will learn and perform a 25-minute show in New York and Los Angeles in front of audiences and casting agents. It’s a fitting move for Ashleigh, whose favourite television show is Glee. Her dad Clarence, a professional singer and dancer, says Ashleigh has been a performer all her young life. “She is at her happiest when she is singing or performing,” he says. “We all get so

S

excited and proud to watch her. She just comes to life and it’s fascinating to watch.” Ashleigh says while she listens to all kinds of music, her favourite performer has always been Tina Arena. She was able to meet her idol earlier this year after she was selected as a contestant in Young Talent Time. “Now I can’t wait to improve on my skills and meet other kids who love music and dance, too,” she says. “I can’t travel the world and sing and dance for everybody. Ashleigh has her sights set on becoming a professional singer, but if that doesn’t work out she says she’s happy to settle for a career in childcare. “I love little children and at least I can still sing to them.” Ashleigh and her father left for rehearsals in Sydney last week. They will head to the US on November 8 and return on November 25.

Young or old, male or female, mental illness can affect anyone. Stephanie Zevenbergen meets people who recognised their symptoms and learned that help was at hand.

A

ddison Barbera has gone over it a thousand times. But he can’t figure out what triggered his depression. In 2011, the 17-year-old of Craigieburn finally told his mum about ‘feeling down’ after keeping it to himself for almost a year. Suicidal thoughts were coming and going, which as enough to scare him into getting help. ‘‘It just came along,’’ he says of the depression. ‘‘I kind of pushed through it. I think things were getting tough at school and so I started feeling down, then it got worse. ‘‘I thought I could do it by myself. When it got a lot worse it was kind of scaring me so that’s when I decided to tell Mum.’’ Addison’s depression lead him to feel lethargic and worn out before escalating to suicidal thoughts. About a month before Addison told his mum about his depression, he had told his friends and family that he was gay. He reckons ‘coming out’ may have triggered his depression because he was still trying to accept himself. ‘‘I was trying to find acceptance in others to accept myself,’’ he says. ‘‘That’s not necessarily a good thing to do. I probably should have accepted myself first and then told people I was gay. I think I was putting a negative vibe around myself.’’ After coming clean about his depression, the next step was to find someone he could trust and talk to. ‘‘Mum suggested I see a counsellor, which I’d already started thinking about,’’ says Addison. ‘‘I’d thought about trying to see one without

telling Mum, without having to put Mum through that kind of thing. Then I told her and she suggested the same thing.’’ Although Addison decided counselling wasn’t for him, he’s made a pact with his mother to always keep an open dialogue. Cooking, walking, painting and thinking about the future are all things that have helped him get on with life. He holds aspirations of finishing school and achieving his long-term goal of becoming a pilot. ‘‘Today I’m going pretty good. I don’t know if it’s because of all the support or medication; I just don’t know,’’ he says. ‘‘I’ve been lucky with family and friends. I haven’t really had much negative feedback since I came out. ‘‘I know a few people who aren’t living at home. Their parents have kicked them out because they are gay. So I’m lucky.’’ In 2010, 24 per cent of all deaths among young men aged 15-24 were due to suicide. The highest age-specific suicide rate for males in 2010 was observed in the 40-44 age group (27.7 per 100,000). Among women, suicide accounted for a higher proportion of total deaths in younger age groups than in older age groups. The problem is real and one Margaret Morrison, of Melton, knows all too well. She had kept her mental health problem to herself for a long time before seeking help, going through periods of suicidal thoughts. The 62-year-old waited 20 years before seeking help for a bi-polar disorder.

October 7-13 is Mental Health Week, which coincides with World Mental Health Day on October 10. Details: mentalhealthvic.org.au

INSIDESTORY

I don’t have the great big highs, but I’d have the great big lows. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I just didn’t know what was wrong. When she was in her 30s she knew something wasn’t right and as she approached her 40s she started to experience massively low moods. ‘‘I never knew what it was,’’ she recalls. ‘‘I don’t have the great big highs, but I’d have the great big lows. I didn’t want to get out of bed. I just didn’t know what was wrong.’’ Two years ago, when Margaret’s ‘low moods’ caused her to take an overdose of drugs, she knew she needed help. She completed a 28-day stay at a Prevention and Recovery Care Service (PARCS) in Melbourne. Margaret says the education she was given relating to her mood disorder gave her a deeper understanding and, in turn, some sense of stability. ‘‘I got into PARCS and the education that you get there and the tools they give you to work with have helped me so much,’’ she says. ‘‘Each day when you’re down you go through your little folder. Some days are really bad and some days I think I’ve got to fight through it. ‘‘Without help you are never going to improve; you’ve got to have education.’’ Now Margaret is paying it forward, helping others who have a mental illness. She spends a few days a week volunteering at PARCS in Caroline Springs. ‘‘I think about how long I went without help and I feel so good that I’m on a program that’s helping me. “Now I feel I can help others,’’ she says. ‘‘I run the gardening group. I go there and talk to the clients and take them for coffee.

Sometimes they just want to talk about different things ... they ask, ‘How do you cope when you leave here?’ and I tell them to make sure they use their [coping] ‘tools’.” Like Margaret, Catherine Newman is getting back on track after being diagnosed with mental illness five years ago. The signs began when she would ‘‘freak out’’ in small spaces. Suddenly her personal space became paramount to her. After going through an abusive relationship, the 23-year-old from Hoppers Crossing developed depression and borderline personality disorder. Catherine is convinced her mental illness is genetic. ‘‘I think the reason I was diagnosed with it is that I have a family history of it,” she says “Whether I experienced abuse or not, I probably would have got depression anyway. ‘‘My mum died when I was four; she was an alcoholic, I couldn’t really tell you much about her, but she had depression and my dad has depression. ‘‘Since the abusive relationship I’ve been dealing with trust issues and I’m just trying to get to know people and get back to the person I used to be.’’ Since being diagnosed, Catherine has received plenty of professional help to get her back to where she wants to be. ‘‘It would be nice to be who I was before, because I was so happy,’’ she says. ‘‘With the borderline personality disorder, I get annoyed by small things. ‘‘One of my goals is not to stress, and it’s working for me now.’’

hef George Calombaris, of Masterchef fame, recently had talk-back radio abuzz with callers either complaining about or supportive of the table manners he used on the show. Some felt his eating habits were offensive and others maintained they were a pleasantly relaxed product of his cultural heritage. People have surprisingly strong feelings when it comes to table etiquette, as I discovered during a survey of work colleagues. A 28-year-old male believes table etiquette is nothing but class distinction. An avowed iconoclast, he claims that if he found himself at a very formal dinner he would deliberately flout the rules as an act of protest. This, however, applied only in Australia. In another country, he says, he would respect local etiquette because he is less cynical about the reasons rules are adhered to. Having to leave knife and fork in the prescribed position on a finished plate (this is different in each country, but in Australia it’s parallel and in the centre), says a 39-year-old female, is as anachronistic as a man having to stand if a female enters the room. She believes as long as it’s not offensive (such as eating with open mouth), anything goes while at table. No elbows on the table while eating, no turning of fork to ‘shovel’ and leaving cutlery correctly placed are considered the bare basics by a 59-year-old female.

No elbows on the table while eating, no turning of fork to ‘shovel’...

Do people care about table etiquette anymore?

She also applies extra rules when dining formally; for example, breaking, not cutting, of bread rolls and buttering each small piece separately; placing a napkin, folded, to the left side of plate on completion of meal; and not pushing away the plate when finished. It was interesting that everyone I surveyed said that in formal settings, such as weddings or classy restaurants, they applied table etiquette much more rigorously. Younger colleagues unanimously decried the need for rigid rules, but all said they would copy others if they found themselves ignorant in a given situation. No one, it seems, wants to be seen as ill-mannered, but the matter of strict table etiquette has been relegated by most young people to the past. But they will probably teach their kids the basics ... because you never know when an invitation from Buckingham Palace will turn up.

A rock-solid investment Just seven years young, this house is in a mint condition, writes Carole Levy n more than 4000 square metres, this seven-year-old steel-framed house hasn’t aged a day, probably because it began life with good bones and a solid dose of style. Supporting the home’s inner beauty, surrounding gardens are well put together, particularly out back where formal precision is moderated by a row of kalamata olive trees screening the lowerend paddock and a small orchard to the side. The layout throws up few surprises, with the big main bedroom to the right of entry; it has an en suite, snazzed up with mosaic tiles and with a double shower and dual vanity basins.

O

Opposite is an open, carpeted lounge room, an adult haven with angled and feature walls. Tassie oak floorboards that begin at the front door extend to the large living hub, which has bifold doors opening to a large, carpeted theatre room with dado rail and two-tone paintwork. The skylit kitchen has a Caesarstone-topped island bench, walk-in pantry, lots of drawers, two-drawer dishwasher and 900mm gas cooker. A two-way hallway heads from the family room to a study with shelves, laundry with storage, separate toilet, gleaming main bathroom, and three bedrooms with wardrobes.

It’s all about lavish entertainment at the back. Well able to host a horde, a pitched-roof pergola area with cafe blinds delivers a sense of occasion via a top-notch wood-fired pizza oven and an ironbark-topped bar with corrugated iron facing. The property has a back paddock so having a pony isn’t out of the question, a 10.5x7-metre Colorbond shed with a dog shelter/storage shed attached, a 20,000-litre water tank and a triple garage with remote-controlled door. All town services are connected and the school bus goes past the front door.

35 Riverview Drive, Hopetoun Park Bedrooms: 4 Bathrooms: 2 Living areas: Lounge, family-meals, theatre, study The rest: Ducted heating, split-system, pergola, wood-fired pizza oven, Colorbond shed, water tank, dog shelter, miniorchard, triple garage Price: $730,000-$780,000 Private sale Agent: Rayner Real Estate Bacchus Marsh, 5366 3600

DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF TINTING YOUR HOME AND CAR.

25% OFF HOME TINTS.

Victor toys with field BY LEN BAKER FOUR-year-old Christian Cullen/Nivea Franco entire Chancellor Cullen was a brilliant victor of the 24th running of the City of Melton Plate for four and five-year-olds over 2240m at Tabcorp Park Melton on Friday. Raced by New Zealander Steve Thompson and partners, Chancellor Cullen is trained by Dean Braun at Lara. Driven by Chris Alford, he wasn’t bustled from gate two, with Im Barney Rubble inside him being hard driven to retain the front running as Keayang Cullen surged forward from gate five. When Im Barney Rubble went off stride going into the first turn, Keayang Cullen was able to stride clear. Alford immediately sent Chancellor Cullen in search of the lead, taking over in the back straight the first time round. Kate Gath aboard the hot favourite Caribbean Blaster (gate four on the second line) wasted no time in putting him in the race, moving three wide on the back of Saint Flash to park outside Chancellor Cullen at the bell. Travelling sweetly approaching the home

turn, Chancellor Cullen was coasting, with Caribbean Blaster being hard driven to try to get on terms and Keayang Cullen coiled up waiting for the sprint lane to come into play. Racing clear on turning, Chancellor Cullen in quarters of 30.8, 30, 27.6 and 27.1 toyed with his rivals in the $50,000 feature, scoring by 8.4m in a slick 1-55.4 over a game Caribbean Blaster, with Keayang Cullen a further 3.8m away in third place. Dean Braun was full of praise for his charge after the race. He described Chancellor Cullen as one of the best standardbreds to join his stable and was very appreciative of the owners for giving him the opportunity to train him. Chancellor Cullen will now follow a path that stablemate Mustang Mach took last season. Braun has chosen the $125,00 McInerney Ford Classic and $175,000 Golden Nugget in Perth during next month and December as Chancellor Cullen’s goals. Other winners from the Melton District on Friday were Takeiteasyonme (Adam Kelly and Rod Petroff), Dominus Vobiscum (Lance Justice and Leigh Sutton) and Retained (Scotch Notch Memorial – John Justice).

False start as rain sweeps in BY TEO PELLIZZERI THE Gisborne District Cricket Association has rescheduled its opening round after a complete washout of the McIntyre Cup and lower grades at the weekend. Just eight deliveries were sent down across the top grade at the weekend at Sunbury’s match against Bacchus Marsh, while the other three McIntyre games failed to take the field. The GDCA was quick to act and has rescheduled all round one games for McIntyre, B grade, C grade and D grade to Sunday, November 18. The season will start this weekend, weather permitting, with reigning premier Riddell at home against Romsey. The other three matches pit Sunbury United against Sunbury, Bacchus Marsh against Woodend and Rupertswood against Wallan in oneday games. Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association had no play from Melton at the weekend as the MacPherson Park pitch was not ready for action. The Lions will begin their premiership defence against Roxburgh ParkBroadmeadows in a game now

reduced to a one-dayer this weekend. In Williamstown District Cricket Association, Melton South’s debut in the top grade, A1 Turf, will have to wait for another week. Melton South was to play away at Gellibrand, but all games in divisions A, B1 and B2 were abandoned on Wednesday due to too many pitches across the divisions not being ready. Melton South will make its bow in the division at home against Wyndhamvale this weekend. Melton Centrals will look to kickstart its B1 Turf season away at Williamstown Imperials after its match against St Johns was abandoned. Ballarat Cricket Association was a complete washout, meaning Darley’s semi-final rematch against Wendouree has been reduced to a one-day game starting this weekend at Learmonth. Ballan did not have a weekend match and will look to play its firstround fixture against VRI Delacombe in division 1 this weekend. In Western Suburbs United Churches Cricket Association, Rockbank hopes to start its season away at St Johns this weekend after a washout at the weekend.

MELTON’S adjustment to life in Bowls Victoria division two may take some time yet after the team that dominated division three lost its opener on Saturday. Melton stormed to promotion last season with one lopsided win after another, but it went down 2-70 to Sunshine City 16-91 at the weekend. The club is in its second year of metropolitan competition after leaving the Central Highlands Bowls Association. Melton 3 was successful on Saturday with a 15-90 to 3-83 win against Altona Sports 2. Melton 5 shared the points after a washout at Sunshine RSL. In Ballarat-Geelong premier division, Avenue may not have made a winning return to the top grade of competition but was nonetheless competitive against Webbcona. Avenue lost 80-103 but won two rinks. Ballan was an opening-round winner in division 3: 95-80 against Webbcona. Avenue was victorious in division 5, beating Ballarat Memorial Sports 114-69. Central Highlands bowling division will return this weekend with Bacchus Marsh hosting Macedon in division 1. The association has expanded from three divisions to four this season, with Bacchus Marsh fielding teams in the top three levels of competition.

Hard work pays off as new coach steps in BY TEO PELLIZZERI NEW Calder Cannons coach Andrew Jago walks into the job with a different currency than the aura of being an ex-AFL player. The senior lecturer in psychology at Victoria University will bring his own style of leadership and coaching to the Cannons after the departure of two-time TAC Cup premiership coach Martin Allison. Allison will head up the Vic Metro under-18 academy program after a Cannons stint filled with both team success and strong AFL draft results. Jago has been an assistant coach to Allison at Calder for the last two seasons and moves into the senior role with a diverse coaching history at development, VFL and local level. ‘‘It’s something I’ve worked towards, something I see as a genuine opportunity,’’ Jago said. ‘‘Marty has been a sensational mentor to me. I’ve certainly learnt a lot. I’m my own person and I’m different. ‘‘If I tried Marty’s style of coaching it wouldn’t work, the same as if he tried mine. But I think we have some similarities.’’ A Tasmanian, Jago played for Devonport and Sprayten before joining the air force. He then headed back to university to study psychology and play for University of Tasmania before moving to Victoria and turning his focus to coaching. Jago initially worked in the coaching ranks at the Northern Bullants, forging a strong partnership with Mark P. Williams. When Williams moved to Sandringham in 2004 and another mentor, Steve Daniel, moved to Seymour in the Goulburn Valley Football League, Jago found himself split between duties. Working in football around the clock paid off for Jago as he enjoyed premiership success at both clubs. Sandringham won a hat-trick of VFL premierships 2004-2006 while Seymour won 2005 and 2006 under Daniel before completing the threepeat in 2007 under a playing coach Jago worked with at the Northern Bullants, Bernie Haberman. ‘‘I had superb mentors . . . for most of those years Sandringham played on the Sunday so I spent a lot of time in the car,’’ Jago said. ‘‘I was in the box every Sunday with Sandringham and at Seymour Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.’’ Taking on head coaching roles with Seddon in the WRFL and Old Haileybury in the VAFA gave Jago a taste of the top job at suburban level, and from there the focus became the development paths. ‘‘Leon Harris, the Vic Country high performance manager, contacted me initially on the sports psych side of things. ‘‘I was fortunate enough to be appointed assistant to Nathan Buckley for the Vic Country under-16s. ‘‘From there, the development system was something I aspired to and I started putting things in place.’’ Juggling various roles such as assistant at Vic Country under-18 level, head of coach of the

Jago takes his turn in the hot seat . . . Being a development coach ‘‘It is a slight adjustment from a winning philosophy to a development philosophy as you come into the TAC. ‘‘I’m definitely a competitive animal by nature. Certainly at Seymour and Sandringham the philosophy was about success. ‘‘I was lucky enough to be mentored by Steve (Daniel) and Mark Williams who had a development philosophy leading to success. ‘‘At Northern Bullants I believed Mark Williams coached as well there as I’ve ever seen him coach and his development of the players was exceptional.

‘‘I saw him take that to Sandringham and turn development into a winning culture.’’ Coaching style ‘‘My focus or my philosophy is basically offence wins games, defence wins championships. The first thing you need to develop is the defensive mindset. ‘‘A lot of players that come into the TAC system are already offensively minded, being in the upper echelon at their own clubs, so it’s about teaching them the balance between offence and defence. ‘‘Players need to know how important a role is, but also not pigeonholing someone and

leaving them in a role for an entire game, let alone an entire season. ‘‘Giving them the opportunity to show skills an identify deficiencies to work on.’’ Sports psychology ‘‘A lot of coaches say 90 per cent of footy is played above the shoulders, and my first question back is how much training is done above the shoulders. ‘‘It’s a big factor. Players can train and execute skills exceptionally well, but put them under match pressure and it breaks down. ‘‘They haven’t lost that skill, it’s about getting them to execute.’’

AFL Victoria youth girls academy and assistant at the Cannons followed. Jago said heading the youth girls academy was of particular importance to his progression as a coach, while the team itself went on to win three national championships. Jago was the backline coach at the Cannons in 2011 and forward line coach this year. He said he

would judge his own performance as a coach based on whether players that came into the Cannons program left it as better people. ‘‘I know that sounds a bit philosophical but it’s something that I genuinely believe. ‘‘If you go through the statistics, there are a lot of footballers who come through the program that do not reach the elite level, so what do they

get out of the program. I’d like to think whatever level our players settle at as footballers, they have learnt from the program and take it to AFL or VFL or back into local level.’’ Ian Kyte is staying on as the Cannons’ region manager and meetings have already started in preparation for the TAC Cup team’s summer program.
