JO DAVY meets an adventurer turned eco-warrior who’s making sustainability cool

C

rouched on a sleek leather chair, eyes alight, his sentences running into one another, eco-warrior Jason Kimberley is like a kid bursting to tell what he learnt at school today. As broken details of environmental injustices tumble from his mouth between shallow gulps of air, it’s clear Kimberley’s passion for sustainability is unparalleled – even breathing comes second. There’s some irony in his earnest, almost child-like demeanor. After all, we’ve met at Kimberley’s office in Prahran to discuss his mission to educate school-age children for an environmentally sustainable future. His organisation, Cool Australia, provides free educational content and learning activities to students and teachers, from kindergarten to year 10. In 2012, more than 5000 teachers downloaded Cool Australia’s modules, which reached about 135,000 students nationwide. The numbers quickly caught the attention of the Victorian Association for Environmental Education, which in March named Kimberley its 2012 Sustainability and Environmental Educator of the Year. Though Kimberley is quick to credit his team for Cool Australia’s success, it’s easy to see why people say yes to this self-described “big kid at heart”. The son of Just Jeans founder Craig Kimberley, he didn’t grow up “green”, but always loved the outdoors, spending many a childhood afternoon with his grandfather at Brighton’s Dendy Beach, fishing or hunting rabbits around the sand dunes. “I guess rabbits are an introduced species,” he rationalises. However, he did develop an early interest in the relationship between humans and the land, recalling a childhood preoccupation with stories of doomed Australian explorers Robert O’Hara Burke and William John Wills. Nowhere is that relationship between man and the environment tested more than in Antarctica, which is where Kimberley found himself on a photographic expedition with some mates in 2005. “I was writing about our adventures and doing some research about Antarctica itself and about the environmental issues: how the Southern Ocean was going, how the penguin colonies and whales and albatross were travelling,” he says. “The situation was a lot worse than I thought … it turns out, I really didn’t have much of a clue. And then I thought, ‘Shit, who else doesn’t know about this?’.” It turned out no one Kimberley quizzed on the subject had much of a clue either so, after publishing his second photography book, Antarctica: A Different Adventure in 2007, he decided to find out more. “Whether it’s the albatross getting caught on long-lines or getting bellies full of plastic, or whales being hunted to the brink of extinction, or fishermen coming down and netting krill by the boatload and taking it back and using it as an additive in pellets for cattle grazing on cleared Amazonian rainforest … it’s all happening because somebody is making a dollar.” It’s a lot to take in, especially when Kimberley adds, somewhat breathlessly after reeling off such a long list of atrocities, that our environment faces hundreds more challenges exactly like these. That, he argues, is where the importance of education comes in. “If we don’t learn and understand something, how can we possibly come to want to take care of it? “My generation, when we left school, we had no idea about any of this stuff. That’s why it’s just so important that current generations and next generations of kids learn about these things, not because they’re green or

eco, but because our planet is our life-support system. Not enough people understand that.” The decision to target young people, rather than trying to mould more mature minds, was a no-brainer for Kimberley. He says that, aside from the adage about old dogs and new tricks, it is a long-term solution for the environment. “As far as I’m concerned, kids are a captive audience. They’re sitting in classrooms all over Australia and they have to be learning something. Why not make some of it about the environment?” Kimberley enlisted the help of a team of masters research graduates and curriculum advisers to develop online learning activities and resources for students, based on the core curriculum for each year level. “The aim was to strip away the complexities, all the dry stuff often associated with sustainability, and get the message across in plain English,” says Kimberley. This meant integrating information about the environment into all areas of learning, from maths and science, to English and civics and citizenship. Rather than serving as an optional add-on for the lesson plan, the program features elements of the core curriculum, with a tinge of green, of course. “It has to go well beyond talking only to sustainability

That’s certainly what happened for Kimberley, who describes his own changed mindset as an “eco-epiphany” of sorts.

or a while, Kimberley looked destined for a career in the family clothing empire. After six months of “not working very hard” at university, he deferred and took a position with Just Jeans, where he remained – except for a brief dalliance in the restaurant game – until his father sold his interest in the company in 2002. In the introductory chapter of Antarctica, Kimberley questioned why children are motivated to follow their parents into business. “As the son of the boss, you feel obliged to set a perfect example … in short, conform, which I am not very good at,” he wrote. Kimberley’s life course changed in 2003 when he decided to self-publish a book of photos taken on a four-wheel-driving holiday around Australia with his wife, Caroline. He says the decision was the best he ever made. Australia Exposed sold more than 9000 copies in two years, and Kimberley’s images were exhibited throughout Australia, the US and Asia. “I’d never intended to get into photography, but all these different connections I made; it was just an

running teachers or geography teachers,” Kimberley says. “You might have that year 8 maths teacher who says, ‘What the hell has sustainability got to do with me?’. We’ll come back with, ‘Well, you can log on, and a dozen learning activities will pop up for you that are directed at a year 8 maths student’. “You’ll be learning about biodiversity or energy or climate change in your maths lesson.” In 2011, Kimberley launched the project, then known as Cool Melbourne, in 10 pilot primary and secondary schools; a mix of state, independent, Catholic and special-needs schools across Victoria. The feedback from the Australian Council for Education Research was overwhelmingly positive, giving the organisation the courage to take its material nationwide. “[ACER] found that teachers were much more confident in teaching sustainability and environmental understandings as a result of using our resources,” Kimberley says. “The teachers also noticed that the students had demonstrable behavioural changes at home and at school, particularly around waste, water and energy. Of course, the holy grail of education is that you want people to understand what they’re doing, and change the way they think about things as a result of that knowledge.”

Picture \ Julian kingma amazing way of meeting people you would never have met or travelling to places you mightn’t have gone to.” The Australia Exposed exhibition was the opening event for Los Angeles’ annual G’Day LA celebrations in 2007, which brought with it a new level of exposure. “Brooke Shields gave me a kiss,” Kimberley says, excitedly. “Every teenage boy in Australia was in love with Brooke Shields in the ’80s. My dream came true 30 years too late.” Kimberley began planning an “old-fashioned” trek across Antarctica with his mates Peter Hillary (Sir Edmund’s son) and Jason Veale in 2004, inspired by the some of the continent’s first explorers. “Most people go to Antarctica and they say they’re going to retrace the steps of someone or climb this mountain,” Kimberley says. “We didn’t know where we were going, or what we were going to find, and we had such a blast.” In hindsight, Kimberley says the trio’s lack of direction helped him better appreciate his surroundings. After 16 days trudging in high winds and temperatures well below freezing, he emerged from the great white continent with the urge to save what was left of it. Eight years later, the Cool Australia website

features about 1500 learning activities covering eight environmental topics. The ultimate goal is to achieve the sort of awareness and behavioural change won by the anti-smoking crusade in the past few decades. “We wouldn’t even think of smoking inside nowadays,” Kimberley says, thanks to anti-smoking campaigns that have been developed since the government introduced health warnings on packaging in 1973. “Kids will go up to a smoker and say, ‘What are you doing? That’s stupid!’. They grow up knowing it’s not good for your health. (Environmental awareness) can’t be an alternative ‘greenie’ attitude, it needs to be in the mainstream consciousness.” Kimberley knows he’s not the only person championing a cause to schools, having faced the challenge of convincing countless principals, teachers and parents to give Cool Australia’s learning activities a chance over other competing programs. Alice Broadbridge, a teacher at Camberwell Girls Grammar, can’t recall how the school first heard about Kimberley in 2009, but she remembers his first visit; an enigmatic environmentalist enthralling her year 7s. “[Kimberley] is very energetic, and he doesn’t talk to a script,” she says. “He recalls anecdotes and is highly entertaining, but he’s also got a serious message. And I think he manages to blend the two quite successfully. At the time, we were trying to make the environmental group at our school more involved, and there were quite a few girls who heard him talk and were inspired to take on some of his initiatives.” As well as incorporating Cool Australia activities into the curriculum, the school has invited Kimberley back yearly to speak to year 7s, which Broadbridge says is an ideal year level to spark the development of good habits. Kimberley delights in reports from teachers who say their students see Cool Australia’s lessons as more like games. But he’s less inclined to talk global warming with his own kids: Florence, 8, Cooper, 6 and Olive, 3. “I don’t want to shove the environmental stuff down their throats,” he says. “They want to know about what I do, they ask questions and they’re aware of how we need to respect our natural world, but they’re probably wondering why I spend so much time with other kids.” As well as sacrificing time with the family at home in Middle Park, Kimberley has also made significant financial contributions to Cool Australia. Admitting, rather awkwardly, that the project was initially funded almost entirely from his own bank account, he is full of praise for Cool Australia’s “coolest partner”, Bendigo Wealth, which came on board as a major financial supporter late last year. Additional fund-raising comes from two charity events throughout the year, as well as Cool Australia’s Enviroweek in August. Another of Kimberley’s bright ideas, the initiative encourages students to take on a challenge and raise money for their own environmental causes, or donate funds towards Cool Australia’s projects. Since 2009, more $260,000 has been raised for environmental causes nationwide. As Victorian Environmental Educator of the Year, Kimberley hopes to expand Cool Australia’s scope in 2013, with the aim of reaching 500,000 students in the next two years. That’s a lot of minds for Kimberley to turn a healthy shade of green, but he’s not fazed. he long simmering row between two of my favourite local retailers has spilled over to the street with signs appearing in each of their windows inviting customers to take sides. It’s not subtle. Take this salvo: “Megalomaniac: n. One who has delusional fantasies as to the greatness of their power. “e.g. Being such a devout megalomaniac she actually expected that her ranting and raving would result in the local authorities overhauling their traffic management policies to meet her ludicrous demands. “No wonder she is so frustrated and cranky all the time; no one listens to her malicious babble or does her bidding.” And the response in the adjacent window: “Hmm, I wonder what brought on this new outburst … Perhaps all his staff cars got parking tickets at once! Believe me, I don’t want parking laws changed … I just wish shopkeepers would let customers have the parking rather than taking it for themselves. “If that is the definition of megalomania it is a very curious one. But hopefully none of our customers have an interest in name-calling and misogyny.” This is pretty uncomfortable for people who love both good books and good food, and it’s creating a vibe not much conducive to either. It’s the restaurant that most surprises me – like, the owners are practising Buddhists. But that’s the thing about such trivial disputes. They can unhinge even the most Zen individuals.

Eddie became legendary for his pursuit of justice after the garage of his rented home was burned down in 1971 in the midst of him disputing a negligent driving charge following a bingle with a policeman. s there another chef in this town who can match the originality and runaway success of Andrew McConnell? I ask only because I’m here to review the latest addition to his expanding inventory of restaurants, and I can’t help feeling this is a bloke who never puts a fork wrong when it comes to tuning into Melbourne appetites. Since making his name at Mrs Jones and Three, One, Two, McConnell has devoted himself to igniting food trends across the city – from post-industrial fine dining at Cutler & Co to funky, small-plate Asian at Golden Fields and the capital’s poshest pub dining at Moon Under Water. And then there’s Cumulus Inc, the iconoclastic eatery that not only helped transform Flinders Lane into the dynamic food precinct it is today, but also proved that refined eating needn’t involve uptight décor, service or dining times. Of course, he isn’t the only one – or even the first – to reimagine modern eating fashions, but I struggle to think of anyone who’s managed to do so with such consistent good fortune. And good fun. You’d think having five restaurants would keep him gainfully occupied, but no. As Cumulus turns five, McConnell has collaborated again with architect Pascale Gomes-McNabb and new business partner Jayden Ong to open a wine bar upstairs called, obviously, Cumulus Up. Its specs are typical of McConnell’s attention to the zeitgeist. First up, a sexy, loft-like space that showcases Gomes-McNabb’s flair for mixed-media design. Hence parquetry wall and oak floors, and geometric angled mirrors that reflect interior detailing such as stippled glass above kitchen and bar, pendant filament bulbs in bordello tones, foundry windows over Flinders Lane, marble-topped tables and scarlet bentwood chairs. Secondly, Cumulus Up stays open until midnight or 1am, five nights a week, so guests can graze on good food and fine wines until late and, perhaps best of all, have a fighting chance of getting a table at Cumulus given downstairs is always packed out. Only large groups can book at the new upstairs venue, but arrive outside peak hours and you should be rewarded with a table. You will also be rewarded with some terrific tastes. Chances are you have already heard about the duck waffle. It’s been so widely eulogised since Cumulus Up opened a few months back it’s surely only a matter of time before this bar snack is beatified, or at least awarded an OAM. Its constituent parts are shredded confit duck, buckwheat batter, a blob of foie gras mousse and dollops of puréed prune. Fortunately it’s not a full waffle – more a wedge – so arteries have a fighting chance at recovery. Kale fritters are health food gone off the rails, in the tastiest possible way. A stack of puffy green and cream nebulae that deliver simultaneous hits of iron and salt, it is best washed down with a crisp white. Or a red. Or even an orange. Naturally there’s no shortage of choice on the dozen or more pages of wines, drawn from several continents and myriad styles. It would be a joy to settle in here for an evening and get to know the cellar more intimately

Paul Kong, owner and head chef of recently opened Lychee House, takes his food seriously. Maybe it’s his 20 years of working alongside chefs on top of their games in restaurants across Melbourne and interstate. Or it could be his curiosity and willingness

but the pricing is a bit too willing for that. Pale, rose-coloured pieces of raw bonito come muddled in ginger vinegar and radish and buried beneath a wave of toasted Korean laver seaweed crushed sesame seeds. Aside from one piece of fish that’s too whiffy for my sensitive nose, it’s a delectable combo of fresh and dried, salt and sweet, tangy and umami, slippery and crunchy. One to come back for. A special of tripe and cuttlefish deserves to win converts to the delights of stewed stomach lining. The meats have been braised slowly in white wine, tomato and garlic to form a brilliant red casserole. Warm crispy pork salad is an artfully rearranged pig’s face (and a hunk of stuffed, slow-cooked, salty hock) tossed with red-veined sorrel. The ears are nondescript, stick-shaped snacks coated in panko. The patty of slow-cooked cheek is more interesting chiefly because I can taste the pork. The most winning facial feature is the tongue, a meaty slab, branded with black grill marks, that pairs well with accompaniments of salsa verde, seed mustard and pickled shallots. What’s listed on the menu as “Leather jacket, clams, mussels, crab sauce and rouille” is a riff on bouillabaisse. The bisque has been reduced from a stock to a sauce that coats the base of the plate and is topped with the seafood, all of it nicely cooked. The best bit is the mopping up, swabbing baguette bits in the heady sauce. Our final temptation is steamed quince and treacle pudding, a luscious construction of warm, quince-scented cakiness with just enough treacle to elevate, not inundate. Add slightly burnt characters from the darkened top and a clod of double cream, and you’ve got all the essentials for surviving a Melbourne winter. Call it a wine bar if you will. to experiment. Whatever the case, Kong spends much time creating new dishes and perfecting his blend of traditional Chinese regional cuisine and new twists on old faves. His most popular dish happens to be a classic from the Sichuan province: kong bao king prawns, with fresh and dried chilli, Chinese wine and a good smattering of fragrant herbs and spices. Curious passersby are often drawn in, he says, by his stuffed scallop shells, a creamy

mix of chicken, scallops, mushrooms and onion stuffed in the shell and shallow-fried to moreish textural crunchiness. Until the end of August, Lychee House offers a free entrée (spring roll, sesame prawn, chicken or beef satay) with each main meal per person. The restaurant has a minimalist feel, pitch-perfect for enjoyment of Kong’s passion on the plate. elvin Rann still lives life to the fullest, but instead of rushing around in a fast-paced blur, he savours every moment. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease seven years ago, the East Keilor resident says he had no choice but to slow down. “I still do everything I love, but it just takes me a bit longer,” he says. “There were many things I had to re-learn to do, like writing, and little things I took for granted became a challenge. “But I’m lucky in that at the moment my Parkinson’s is mild compared to many and I still get to go out for dinner with my wife, drive a car and spend time with my family.” Rann, 68, says since his diagnosis, he has refused to let his condition define him. “I went through a whirlwind of emotions,” he says. “From anger, to sadness to acceptance of life as it is today. You just have to be grateful for what you have and make the most of life.” His wife of 45 years, Lynn, says she continues to be inspired by her husband. “Its been an unnerving process and at the beginning the unknown was very scary to us,” she says.

“But Kel handles it very well. He is on medication, he has come to terms with it and we have realised this isn’t a death sentence. “Life changes, our lifestyle has definitely slowed down, but we are still living our lives.” The father of two is raising awareness of the condition in this year’s Walk in the Park event. Rann will walk four kilometres with his family and friends by his side at Federation Square next month and raise money for Parkinson’s Victoria. “Parkinson’s Victoria has been a tremendous support to us since my diagnosis,” he says. “To raise awareness and funds for research into this condition is something that’s very important to me.” More than 27,000 Victorians are living with Parkinson’s, with numbers increasing by 4 per cent every year. For those diagnosed there is currently no cure. Rann says the walk has a symbolic meaning for people with Parkinson’s as the condition is a movement disorder and walking, while often challenging for some, supports the goal of staying fit, healthy and active. \

arly this year I wrote about how our lives may change when cars start driving themselves and, fool that I am, I missed the best bit. I covered all sorts of good stuff, such as having the car drive you to work and then drive itself home again, thereby avoiding expensive city parking. And no more taxis and airport parking. And given that autonomous cars would stick to the speed limit, you could forget cameras and speed cops as well. But Volvo has just come up with an idea that I reckon knocks all of these good things right out of the ballpark. How long do you spend driving around in circles looking for a parking spot? If you’re a Saturday regular in any of the big shopping centres and you’re not into long, boring walks through hectares of cars, I’m willing to bet that cruising around looking for a spot takes a major chunk out of your schedule, especially when you have to wait for the mum who’s about to leave but has to pack the little ones into the back seat, then fold up the pusher and heave it up back with all the shopping. With a self-driving Volvo, you can kiss all this goodbye. You simply get out of the car at the shopping centre entrance and hit an app on your smart phone that tells the car to go park itself. It will then roam around, interacting with other cars and with transponders set into the floor of the park until it finds a nice cosy space

“Our over 50s yoga classes have been fabulous. We have many in that group who have been coming to the centre for 10 years. It gives them a wonderful opportunity to stretch, breathe and relax. They have developed special friendships within the group and created their own little community, which has been lovely to see.”

But the over 50s yoga class is what’s left the longest impression.

“We hold yoga classes for pregnant women, mums and bubs, kinder to primary-age kids, teenagers, over 50s and everyone in between. “And we specialise in fertility to help women conceive, deal with pregnancy issues (including nausea), help turn breech babies and stimulate labour.” Chinese doctor Martin Nguyen, who also works at the centre, provides additional health services, including acupuncture, diet therapy and herbalism, while a team of massage therapists provide remedial, relaxation and prenatal massage. “The most rewarding thing is helping women who have struggled to fall pregnant, and helping induce a full-term labour naturally with acupuncture, as the work is so tangible at that level,” Martin says. The centre has been popular during its 13 years in the community, providing
