Traders baulk at parking plan BY DANIEL TRAN TRADERS say extra parking rights proposed last week for seniors, war veterans and volunteers will punish businesses throughout Monash. Two Monash councillors want to allow an extra hour of parking beyond local limits for special categories of drivers, including carers of the elderly and disabled. Oakleigh councillor Stephen Dimopoulos and Mulgrave councillor Paul Klisaris have won support for a feasibility study on the plan. The study will investigate the practicality of the scheme, which intends to help senior citizens — including residents, veterans, volunteers and ratepayers over 70 — who have trouble walking but do not qualify for a disability permit. Their carers will also qualify for longer parking. But cafe owner Cr Bill Pontikis said the move would make it harder for retailers to survive. ‘‘If something like this were to come, it would affect the traders in a big way,’’ he said. ‘‘If these people come and sit there all day, of course it’s going to affect our business. It’s

Extra time: Cr Paul Klisaris wants Monash to relax parking restrictions for the elderly, the disabled, veterans and volunteers over 70. Picture Rob Carew hard enough as it is. We don’t want to make it even harder. We want to make it easier. We want to encourage more shoppers, not lose customers.’’ Christo Christophidis, of the Glen Waverley Traders Association, called for the council to abandon the study. He said that the study

would only show how ‘‘obviously detrimental’’ the new plan was to the current parking system. ‘‘I think it will be a waste of money,’’ he said. The proposed plan is the brainchild of Cr Klisaris. During his campaign at the recent council elections, Cr Klisaris had promised to investigate a more far-reaching solution. At the time, he proposed that residents aged over 70 should be given windscreen stickers that would allow them to park for longer. ‘‘Parking is so important and that’s one of the biggest issues in our city,’’ he said. ‘‘We need to look after our seniors.’’ But Cr Pontikis said that the plan could affect customers, who would go elsewhere if they were unable to find parking. ‘‘I understand what Paul is trying to do. I understand where he’s coming from, but it’s got to work as well. ‘‘If it’s not going to work for the wider community, then I don’t think you should just bluntly go ahead and do it. ‘‘I think what we need to look at in all the shopping centres in the city of Monash (and) we need to work together and create more parking.’’
