borg’s departure forces countback in coburn MELTON

A countback will be conducted in Melton City’s Coburn ward after councillor Broden Borg resigned a year into his term. Cr Borg made the shock announcement at last Tuesday’s council meeting. The primary school teacher is moving to Dubai to teach in a prep-12 school. “It has been a privilege to serve the people of Melton,” he said. “I’ve been here since I was 20 so I feel like I’ve grown up on this council.” Cr Borg, who was re-elected in 2012 with the highest number of votes, said he would not make a farewell speech at his final council meeting in July. His resignation takes effect on August 20. “I think my greatest achievement was gaining residents’ trust, by doing what I said I’m going to do,” he said. Cambridge, Coburn and Watts Residents Association (CCWRA) president Nathan Miles said Cr Borg had been a great community servant.

“The CCWRA would like to thank [him] for his tireless work ... and his willingness to always listen and act on community concerns,” Mr Miles said. The Victorian Electoral Commission will conduct a countback on August 26. “We work with council and use the original ballot papers, excluding the resigned member,” VEC spokeswoman Sue Lang said. “We’ll go to the next highest preference and approach the new nominal-elected person. They then have 48 hours to respond.” If the elected candidate declines, the candidate with the next-highest number of votes will be contacted. Melbourne’s western growth corridor is bearing the brunt of Victoria’s population growth with the number of people calling Melton and Wyndham home almost doubling in the past decade. New population data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics reveals Melton’s population rose by 92 per cent between June 2003 and June last year, from 63,837 to 122,909. EPA, petitioners turn noses up on landfill ravenhall

A petition of more than 4700 names of residents opposing Boral’s plans to expand its Ravenhall landfill site was tabled in State Parliament last Tuesday. Western Metropolitan Labor MP Cesar Melhem, who lives in Caroline Springs, said community interest must come first. “This issue is not only about the proposed expansion,” he said. ‘‘It’s also about the immediate odour pollution problem plaguing the lives of locals. It’s about the Environment Protection Authority doing its job.”

Western Metropolitan Greens MP Colleen Hartland also supported the petition. “My personal objection was in addition to more than 4000 already received by Melton City Council,” she told Parliament. “The proposed Boral expansion has potential to impact on surrounding neighbourhoods Deer Park, Caroline Springs, Truganina and, potentially, farther afield.” The EPA last week urged Boral to fix the cause of existing odours after a big rise in reports to its pollution hotline. Calls nominated Boral and Pinegro Composting in Ravenhall as the source of

the odour, although the EPA said it had been unable to track an increase in smells. “Pinpointing odours can be difficult, including tracking the exact source, because odours are generally temporary and subjective from person to person,” an EPA spokesman said. “For EPA to be able to take action against a business, the community needs to report strong and persistent odours at the time they are detected. “Since September 2013, EPA has conducted 25 inspections in the Deer Park and Ravenhall area, including four compliance inspections

of the Boral landfill, three compliance inspections of Pinegro Composting, two odour investigations and nine odour surveillance operations. “As a result, EPA required both the landfill and the composter to fix the cause of the identified odours.” Further surveillance and compliance inspections are planned. Boral previously said it was improving its gas extraction systems and had no immediate plans to increase the amount of waste it received. \ BEN CAMERON

Hundreds of residents staged a peaceful protest outside Melton council chambers in a bid to baulk plans to expand a Ravenhall landfill. About 250 people from Melton, Brimbank and Wyndham urged decision-makers to vote against Boral’s application to extend its operations by 179 million cubic metres. If approved, it would create one of the largest rubbish dumps in Australia. Children played on the grass last Tuesday night as adults rallied. Melton police’s Inspector Stephen Mutton said the crowd was well behaved. “When you’ve got this many people out here at 6pm, straight after a full day’s work, you know it’s a significant community issue,” Inspector Mutton said. “It’s a lot of families standing up for something that affects them all.” The application is due to come before the council on May 27. \ PRISCILLA MOCA

addiction nightmares ease as loved ones learn to cultivate calmness MOORABOOL

A group that supports the loved ones of people grappling with drug addiction is empowering families, according to Bacchus Marsh police youth resource officer Jim Ross. A year after the Family Drug Help meetings began, Senior Constable Ross says regular talks by doctors, lawyers and nurses have equipped parents and siblings with vital information. “It’s a one-on-one, where they have the opportunity to ask away and get answers,’’ he said. “It also makes it easier for us to attend the family environment when we have to.” The group has about 10 regular members, including ‘‘Julie’’, whose son has successfully completed detox and is in a rehabilitation program. Julie has found the meetings to be a tremendous help for her and her family, who grappled with her son’s addiction for three years. “Before I was part of the group, I thought, why don’t they just pick themselves up? But it’s not that simple,” she said. By the third meeting, she recalls, her stress and anger had been replaced by calmness. “Knowledge is a great thing – it creates

calmness. We develop techniques for dealing with an addict’s behavior, as well as helping them make better choices by giving them boundaries and consequences.” Senior Constable Ross said the effects of drug addiction rippled through the community. “It’s from the immediate family to the extended family, including relatives and friends, to the wider community, with crime being committed to finance their habits,” he said. “As well as the burden placed on our health and ambulance services.” Julie urges anyone who has a loved one with a drug addiction to seek support. “It helps so much, and how you change your own behaviour can make a difference,” she said. “It’s not that you don’t love them, but they need to change and boundaries need to be put in place.” Meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of every month, 7.30-9.30pm. \ PM » Details: 5366 4500

You are right, Neil de Silva (Letters, April 1). It is a bit sad that a grumpy ex-councillor has to try to bring important matters to the attention of residents. Pity that Moorabool is not letting all of us know in advance so we all can have a say. The Underbank development never came to the previous council, and in fact East Moorabool councillors had all agreed that this land would not be rezoned. There was no green light. And what development projects are you complaining about? In my time, the only major council development was the Lerderderg library, and that has been a great community success. Moorabool Shire may have approved the West Maddingley Estate, but the rezoning was forced on us by the state government. I will agree there are some very average residential subdivisions, but these go back to a long time before me.

My shout I reckon the biggest jibe you could throw at council while I served was the lack of progress with projects like the pool, other recreation, traffic and parking in our town centre. New laws that will result in prison time for anyone who fails to report child abuse need to be judged on a case-by-case basis. Victim support groups are right to express concerns that people, mostly women, would be afraid to report a violent partner for harming their child. Assuming that a woman can take her children and walk away from a violent partner and report him is both simplistic and naive and fails to recognise that she, too, is a victim. It also assumes that she will be believed or that friends, family and even the justice system, won’t take the perpetrator’s side “because he’s a good sport who was probably provoked”. There needs to be community-wide zero-tolerance of domestic violence and an end to the mindset that its victims can make it disappear just by calling time out. \ DAVID BONNICI \ EDITOR

A new leaf in sustainability has been turned with what’s believed to be the state’s first waste-free house having been built in Melton South. VU staff brace for more job losses EDUCATION

More than 170 jobs could go at Victoria University if management goes ahead with plans to outsource services, according to staff. Speakers at a forum held at the Footscray Park campus outlined a range of concerns about outsourcing, including the loss of more jobs on top of 400 axed in the past two years. Senior lecturer Paul Adams (pictured) told the forum the university’s difficulty in retaining students would be exacerbated by

Toni Maticevski is holding his own among the world’s best fashion designers, writes ROBERT FEDELE

I

nternationally renowned fashion designer Toni Maticevski all began. Maticevski describes himself as a loyal and honest person who gets excited by seeing his customers happy. “I think, for me, growing a business is about being transparent and light-hearted and having respect for everyone you work with. People then want to help you and see you grow.” Last year, his creations featured as part of the National Gallery of Victoria’s largest-ever exhibition, Melbourne Now. Maticevski’s sculptural work in neoprene, silk and resin was suspended in the stairwell at the Ian Potter Centre at Federation Square, and one of his dresses featured in Bendigo Art Gallery’s Modern Love exhibition. After being in the game for 14 years, Maticevski says he measures success by happiness and the amount of stress in his life. “It’s always hard when you have to create something new and inspire your audience. I think if it were easy then you’d probably be jumping off someone else’s ideas to help you. “Design is fun. It’s a small part of the job, but it’s draining and exhilarating. There are so many facets to a brand now and I love working on all of them. I think success is staying consistent and being unexpected.” Maticevski recently returned home after a visit to Paris where he spent 10 days spruiking his collection for the new season sales. “I love Paris. I think it’s nearly every designer’s ultimate destination to live and work there. I have so many memories of friends who have really become family there now. Knowing the city and seeing it change has been amazing.” The designer says he doesn’t find time for much else besides his career and a little down time on the couch with his partner. He’s always looking to the future and to getting bigger and better. “I dream big all the time and so there are always ideas on the cards that evolve and excite. Bacchus Marsh university student will present her findings on youth unemployment at an international forum in Washington DC this week. Jordan Wren, 22, left for the United States on Saturday as one of six Australians who will attend the World Bank and International Monetary Fund spring meetings on a full Global Voices scholarship. Global Voices is a non-profit organisation that aims to provide opportunities for young Australians to engage with international policy at home and abroad. Wren, a master of international relations student at Monash University, hopes to address the issue of youth unemployment through “ideally entrepreneurship. “It’s an issue that we often don’t associate businesses with Australia, but it affects all communities,” employ she says. “It has a domino impact, bearing locally” on mental and physical health, professional experience, housing, socialising and further down the line in career choices.” Wren says she would like to see more young people given the opportunity for education and training in agricultural skills. “It’s definitely something worth exploring, because ideally businesses employ locally and need young people with the right training.” The US visit will include seminars, workshops and briefings relating to the global economy, international development and global financial markets. t’s late at night and someone suggests a few shots. At the time, it’s the best idea you’ve heard all week. For many people, the default shot is tequila. Out rolls the salt, slices of lime and the shots are lined up at the bar. It takes so little time to down the shot, but tequila’s actually one of the great slow drinks of the world. It takes eight years to grow its key ingredient, the blue Weber agave plant, before it is roasted, fermented and distilled to become tequila. Methods of farming the agave plant haven’t changed in centuries: the agave farmers, known as jimadores, in the mountains near the town of Tequila, nurture their plants to ensure they never flower and die before they have produced the right amount of carbohydrates for fermentation. When harvested, the fruit of these plants, known as piñas and weighing between 70 kilograms and 110 kilograms, are slow-cooked in ovens, a process that breaks down the starch inside the piñas into fermentable sugars. There’s another spirit made using agave that’s often confused with tequila – mezcal – but the agave is smoked rather than roasted, giving the spirit a distinct smoky character. Tequila’s a versatile spirit, too. Use the fresh, white tequila in place of gin in a G&T and, in any recipe that calls for rum, you can substitute aged “añejo” tequila. There are two ways I like to drink it. On hot days, nothing beats the tall, refreshing Paloma, which is a mix of tequila, grapefruit soda – look

Makes about 600ml ● 1 handful each of fresh coriander and mint (no stalks) ● 2-5 jalapeño chillies, to taste ● 30ml agave syrup ● 200ml fresh pineapple juice ● 300g canned tomatillos, strained ● 100ml fresh lime juice Blend all ingredients until fully integrated and liquefied; let stand for 20 minutes. Coarse strain, then fine strain into large jug, press through with the back of a spoon. Chill and serve in equal parts with your favourite tequila!

Since joining the Riddell District Football League last season, Rupertswood has impressed with its competitiveness, but it remains winless against rivals Sunbury. Saturday was the fourth meeting between the clubs and the Kangaroos again proved too strong, winning 12.15 (87) to 10.9 (69). The Sharks led by two points at quarter-time, having made more of their opportunities in front of the big sticks than an inaccurate Sunbury. Poor goalkicking again hampered the Roos in the second term, and though by half-time Sunbury had drawn level with Rupo the Roos had had five more shots on goal. Sunbury took the ascendancy in the third quarter, however, booting four rOOS shape goals to one to take a match-winning 19-point lead into the final break. as bogey Rupo launched a counter-attack team for in the final term, but Sunbury had sharks all the answers, running out 18-point winners. The Melton Phoenix has continued its strong start to the State League 4 season with a win against Brimbank Stallions on Saturday. Following their opening round win, the Phoenix players showed they’ll take little time adapting to the higher standards of their new league by blitzing the Stallions in the opening half before taking a 4-1 win. The Phoenix took a little while to get going, with some poor passing leaving the door open for Brimbank to hit the scoresheet first through a lob over Melton keeper Chris Vassallo 10 minutes in. That seemed to spark the visitors into action, with Melton

dominating the next 20 minutes to slot home three goals in a display of precision passing and execution. Brimbank fell apart in the wake of the Phoenix onslaught, with Mark Redman sweeping brilliantly across the backline. Taking a 3-1 lead into half-time, the visitors sealed the game in the first 10 minutes after the resumption. Phoenix coach Theo Karapanagiotidis said his team’s recovery impressed him. “For 15 minutes Brimbank really didn’t touch the ball; they had nothing. Zach Peoples’ eight goals weren’t enough as Daylesford won 16.14 (110) to 14.12 (96). \ CHFL Gordon got its Central Highlands Football League season off to the worst possible start, going down by a resounding 76 points to Bungaree in the opening round on Saturday. Seven goals to two in the opening term opened up an early lead for visiting Bungaree, while eight final-quarter goals to the victors turned a good win into a comfortable one. Steven Nicholson kicked four goals for the vanquished, but in the end the 20.28 (148) to 11.6 (72) scoreline reflected the gap between the teams. \ RDFL Melton Centrals had a great start to their Riddell District Football League season, comfortably accounting for Rockbank. It was tight early, with only a handful of goals separating the two sides for much of the first half, but the Centrals kicked away late in the game. Four goals to James Aquilina led the way for the Centrals as they took the win 12.11 (83) to Rockbank’s 6.7 (43). \ CRICKET Melton Cricket Club skipper Nathan Giesler took out the club champion award at the club’s presentation night at the weekend. Giesler also won the first XI batting award, while Nathan Allen won the bowling gong. In second XI, Stuart Wilson claimed batting honours and Dylan Clarke the bowling award. Chris Hope won the club wicketkeeping award, while Allen was also judged best allrounder. \
