pet dog dies in backyard snake attack KURUNJANG

A Kurunjang woman is heartbroken after her dog was attacked and killed by a tiger snake in her backyard. The death comes as a snake catcher warns there have been more snake sightings than usual for this time of year. Charmaine Bonnici said she arrived home on September 22 to find her five-year-old English Staffordshire cross, Ellenora, and the snake dead in her backyard. “It was absolutely horrible. I went to bring my washing in then I saw the snake,” she said. “I have never seen a snake out here before; I’ve been in Melton for three years..” Ms Bonnici said it was lucky her young daughter had not come into contact with the snake. “She’s out in the yard playing a lot and wouldn’t know what it was or realise it was dangerous. “The reptile catcher said my dog had seen the snake in the backyard and was trying to

protect her territory.” Melton-based snake catcher Jason Blainey, who removed the snake from Ms Bonnici’s property, said he had received an above-average number of calls to remove snakes from across the west for this time of the year. He said areas such as Caroline Springs, Melton and Truganina had the most callouts. “It is early, but because we’re getting the warm weather earlier the snakes are coming out of hibernation earlier.’’ Mr Blainey said he had already removed a large number of brown and tiger snakes, and copperheads. He said residents should keep their yards tidy to discourage snakes. “You can’t really stop them from coming into your yard, but you can make it less comfortable by mowing lawns and getting rid of any mulch piles.” A Department of Environment and Primary Industries spokesman warned people against trying to catch or kill snakes. Apart from the danger, snakes are protected under the Wildlife Act. \ SZ

Almost 100 motorists with more than $400,000 of outstanding fines were nabbed in a one-day operation last Wednesday. Automated number-plate recognition technology was used to track down motorists on High Street during the Melton police and Sheriff ’s Office joint operation. The operation came after August’s Operation Surrender, which encouraged residents with outstanding fines and warrants to hand themselves in. A woman who had her car clamped last Wednesday had a total of $88,000 in outstanding fines, the highest amount of the day. Ten people nabbed owed more than $10,000 each. Twenty-nine motorists chose to pay their fines on the day, allowing Sheriff ’s officers to clear 150 warrants and recover $43,108. Twenty-four vehicles were clamped. Melton’s Inspector Stephen Mutton said a lot of inconvenience could have been avoided if people simply paid their fines. “It’s quite disturbing that so many people were intercepted, considering we ran Operation Surrender to give themselves up,” he said. “It caused a lot of inconvenience. There

were a lot of parents with children in the cars with them and the parents had to be processed by the sheriff. “Instead of choosing to deal with their problems and do the right thing, many of these people now have to deal with not only paying their fines but also the inconvenience of having their car clamped on the spot.” There are more than 17,000 residents in Melton, Caroline Springs and Deer Park with more than 107,000 outstanding warrants, totalling $38 million. Last week’s operation caught out eight unregistered drivers, four unlicensed drivers, one suspended driver and seven other traffic offences. Inspector Mutton said many motorists intercepted were ‘‘high-risk’’ road users who continued to disobey the law. He said police would continue similar operations in coming months. Neighbourhood disputes are becoming more common in Melton and Moorabool, with residents typically arguing over fences, trees and bad behaviour. New data from the Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) show calls for help in Melton increased to 339 last financial year, up from 323 in 2011-12. Calls from Moorabool went up from 41 in 2011-12 to 60 last year. Across the state, about 20,000 people called the DSCV for advice last financial year. Melton council’s acting compliance manager, John Russell said while some complaints, such as fence disputes, were out of the council’s jurisdiction, officers could act in some instances. “Council ... has the capacity to deal with complaints such as loud music, barking dogs, certain aspects of living conditions and some types of drainage issues,” he said. “The behaviour of people in terms of violence and vandalism are often brought to council’s attention, but the complainants are referred back to the police. While any number of disputes is too many, in a rapidly growing municipality such as Melton, causative effects for complaints might be expected to increase

Stand-up comedian Doug Chappel doesn’t mind admitting he felt some pressure to make a group of armed troops laugh during a comedy gig in Afghanistan. “They were fairly large crowds and they’ve all got machineguns,” the Burnside resident said. “It’s pretty daunting, especially when you’re picking on audience members to make jokes.” Chappel, who returned from his trip last week, said it was a huge honour to perform for more than 1000 troops. He has also done shows for soldiers in East Timor and the Solomon Islands. “When you’re able to provide enjoyment it’s really rewarding,” he said. “The soldiers are doing a great job. They pretty much work 12-hour days, seven days a week, and they don’t get a lot of entertainment.” Chappel, a comedian of 15 years, said challenging aspects of the visit included not being able to tell people back home the exact details of where he was going. “I felt safe, but it was pretty full-on tour,” he said. “You jump on a plane to a different place, set up, do the show, pack up, sleep ... then fly out somewhere else. A love of drumming and drawing, a new-found interest in girls and a desire for independence are typical of most teenage boys, and Connor, 15, is no different. However, Connor, who lives at Ascot, near Bendigo, but is originally from Melton, has other challenges that only about one in 3600 boys face. Connor has the most severe form of muscular dystrophy, Duchenne MD, which affects boys only and is usually diagnosed before they are six years old. “He was actually walking at two, But then it slowly disintegrates, so now he’s confined to an electric wheelchair,” says his mother, Debra Hall. “He’s a drummer, but now his body’s getting weaker so he’s having difficulty raising his hands to play the drums. He’s also a great artist and, luckily, he’s still got strength in his hands and wrists to be able to do that.” For the past three years, Connor has attended a camp near Bacchus Marsh run by Muscular Dystrophy Australia (MDA). “When Connor first went, I was really concerned for him because for the first time he was facing all other children in different stages of the condition,’’ says Debra.

asmine envelops the Footscray cottage where 1920s detective and femme extraordinaire Phryne Fisher perches on the kitchen table of author Kerry Greenwood. The heady scent of a million white blossoms counters the traffic and fast food distractions at the end of the street, offering the visitor a very real illusion of passing through a time zone to where this most prolific of writers fuels her fascination with history and the largely under-written roles that women have within its more conventional tomes. Research and attention to detail are her greatest allies, along with a vivid imagination and an ability to walk in other people’s shoes, even centuries later. “I am addicted to researching,” Greenwood says very early on in our interview when we are talking about Out of the Black Land, her only novel, of more than 50 thus far, set in ancient Egypt. “Egyptian and Hittite history are quite well documented,” she says. “What attracted me about [researching] Egypt is that there are love songs and shopping lists, jokes and graffiti ... and the textiles; all that gold.” This wealth of daily life details, the minutiae of how ancient Egyptian society was organised, along with its close connections to early Greece, inspired Greenwood to pose serious academic questions about the era of 18 dynasty kings and the nation’s deadly dalliance with monotheism under the unstable, sun-god worshipping king Akhnaten. It was learning Greek that transported Greenwood’s already fertile imagination and gift for words and languages into the timeless zone of myths and fairy tales, epic adventures and personal quests. “I’m an honorary wog, you know,” Greenwood says proudly, pointing out that along the short Seddon street where she has lived for more than 30 years, there are 26 different languages spoken. She learnt Greek, aged five, after meeting her lifelong friend Themetrula Georgovasilopoulos, who had migrated to Footscray with her family. French came from school and Sicilian Latin from other neighbourhood children. Multicultural Melbourne provided the playgrounds of her youth. “I read dictionaries; I still love dictionaries,” Greenwood confesses. It was once said of American poet, author and social activist Marge Piercy that “she could weave a tale with a pebble and a thread”. Greenwood is of the same ilk, but it took Melbourne publisher Hilary McPhee to focus the almost 30-year-old Greenwood on detective stories and crime fiction as the medium for her writing. As she was already working full time as a duty solicitor at Sunshine court, Greenwood insisted her first two-book contract with McPhee be historically based. “I was afraid I would steal a client’s case,” she says. “Poor darlings have enough on their plates without me stealing their stories. I thought this would be unethical.” Besides, history is Greenwood’s muse, her fountain of knowledge and the basis of her understanding of herself and her city. The Phryne Fisher book series is set in 1928-29, the time of “the great wharf strike” at the Melbourne docks, an era that had piqued Greenwood’s curiosity since a thesis from her student days. It was the time between the two ‘great’ world wars, just before the global depression of the 1930s, and an era of great opportunity for young women prepared to take their chances at financial independence rather than domestic spinsterhood, as was the lot of many a maiden aunt as a result of the dearth of marriageable men due to WWI. Named after a fabled Corinthian courtesan, Phryne Fisher was created on the tram ride home from Greenwood’s meeting with McPhee. “I gave her a minor English title so no one can overawe her,” her creator says. “And she’s going to have money and do exactly as she wishes. I wanted her to have complete freedom of action.” Not for Phryne the “pillow talk” take on how women

build influence; Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is as capable of wielding a pistol, and shooting it if necessary, as she is competent behind the wheel or under the bonnet of her beloved red Hispano-Suiza motor car. She is as much at home on the battlefields of Flanders and the back streets of Chinatown as she is in the parlours of people of power and persuasion. “By the time I got off the tram, she’d walked into my head,” Greenwood recalls. “She has a strong sense of justice. She’s living in a very intense world where all bets are off. “And because she is a hero, she always works it out eventually. She’s seldom wrong.” After her sixth Phryne Fisher murder mystery, Greenwood grew concerned she was becoming formula-driven and, not wanting to go down the Agatha Christie track, decided to strip her character down to bare bones for Blood and Circuses (1994). “She came out of it a goddess,” enthuses Greenwood.

“I love when Phryne comes in and sits on the corner of the table and says, ‘oh, darling, that was amazing!’” Greenwood’s Miss Fisher is now making her 20th appearance in print and starring in a TV series that is redefining the world view of Australia and, more importantly, Melbourne, even winning over notoriously snobby French art critics and absolutely wow-ing audiences in New York, London, Paris ... and Brazil. “And there’s not a single Skippy in the whole series,” Greenwood points out. The 20th Phryne Fisher mystery, Murder and Mendelssohn, was released on September 25 by Allen and Unwin. phoenix fires for 7-1 win Soccer

It took Melton just five minutes to establish that its challenge for the FFV state league 5 title was legitimate at Darebin on Friday night. The Phoenix blazed through the north-versus-west semi-final, hammering SL5 north champion Bundoora United 7-1. Jason Cossai got things started with a first-minute goal before Chris Briggs netted in the third and fourth minutes to leave the remaining 86 somewhat redundant. Briggs sealed a hat-trick in the 17th minute as Melton cruised to a 4-0 half-time lead. Bundoora pegged a goal back soon after the hour mark, but Melton replied in the 68th minute through Stephen McLelland. Two late goals for Jason Moody rounded out the monumental hiding. Melton advances to the State League 5 final against St Kilda City, which was a convincing 6-0 winner against Ringwood City in the south-versus-east semi-final. With promotion already secure for all teams in state league 5 finals, the main goal of the season had already been achieved. But Melton is playing like a team with unfinished business. “We haven’t faced a strong opponent for a while and the boys geared up for this match as in important game,” coach Theo Karapanagiotidis said. “It was a semi-final with no second chance and the boys fired up.

BRIEFS VSDCA Melton returns to defend its status as the association’s top team with a clash against Yarraville on Saturday. The season starts with two-day games, with Melton’s match against Yarraville starting at 1pm at Yarraville Oval. Melton’s women start the VWCA premier seconds season with a trip to Napoleons on Sunday to play Napoleons-Sebastopol in a one-day game. Former Melton player Patrick McKenna hit a century for Vic Country under-19s last week. McKenna made 135 off 138 balls in the Country v Metro match in Barooga, NSW. McKenna has switched from Melton to Premier Cricket club Carlton. GDCA Gisborne District Cricket Association returns to the field, weather permitting, this Saturday.
