ward talk ‘wrong forum’ for mayor’s statement August 16, due to “insufficient evidence to support a criminal prosecution under Section 59 of the Local Government Act”. In the advertisement and in last week’s speech Cr Majdlik said the complaint alleged that she offered election candidate Nathan Miles council funding for an improved animal management fund. Cr Broden Borg said he believed the advertisement was an inappropriate use of ratepayers’ money. “I don’t think that was the right forum to name and shame particular members of our community without them having the ability for a right of reply,” he said. “Residents look at ward talk to see what’s new in their ward, they don’t want to read about personal circumstances of councillors.”

A Melton councillor has criticised mayor Kathy Majdlik for using a council advertisement to declare her innocence following a local government inspectorate investigation. The “ward talks” are typically used by councillors to inform residents of specific events happening in Melton’s three wards. Cr Majdlik also addressed last week’s council meeting, refuting claims that she offered an election candidate budget money in exchange for preferences ahead of last October’s poll. As reported in the Weekly, the inspectorate’s investigation ended on

Residents have used a community social-media page operated by Cr Borg to complain about Cr Majdlik’s use of the advertisement. However, the council’s chief executive, Kel Tori, said every councillor KATHY was free to use the MAJDLIK advertisements to make “any statement on any topic they like”. “As she is entitled, the mayor chose to use her scheduled column to set the record straight in relation to unsustained allegations that were widely reported in the press,” Mr Tori said.

Most of these thefts are from unlocked vehicles and at night.” Reported assaults in Moorabool went up from 257 to 348, crime against the person from 314 to 425 and drug offences from 94 to 119. Inspector McCrory said family violence was a major concern, with an increase of 30 incidents in the last year (from 127 to 157). “A divisional family violence unit has been established and continues to target this crime theme. We encourage residents who have been the victims of family violence to report the matter to us and we can offer various avenues of support and referral to appropriate agencies.” \ SZ

CRIME

An average of two houses were burgled in Melton every day last financial year, new police data reveals. Crime statistics released last week also show assault, drug offences and crime against the person increased in the 12 months to July. Total crime in Melton increased from 8296 reported incidents in 2011-12 to 8305 in 2012-13. Crime against the person jumped from 1268 incidents to 1425, assaults from 1091 to 1180 and drug offences from 350 to 384. Inspector Stephen Mutton said a specialised burglary unit had helped decrease residential burglaries by 14 per cent. “We are still experiencing a rise in ‘other’ burglary categories such as shop premises, garages and sheds and new houses under construction, where thieves are stealing

Mr Miles said he had been denied the chance to reply. “I think it’s inappropriate that she’s used the ward talk to push her own agenda,” he said. “It’s designed to inform constituents of things going on in the area. new school, new name The name of a new school in Caroline Springs will be changed following a County Court hearing. Intaj Khan will open a school on the former Mowbray College site next year and planned to call it West Melbourne Grammar School. But Truganina’s Westbourne Grammar School applied to the County Court to force Mr Khan to change the name, saying it would create confusion. Mr Khan said he agreed to Westbourne’s request because he did not want to get involved in a court case. He said he was committed to opening a non-religious school with a multicultural slant. The new school is likely to be called Melbourne Lakeside Grammar School. \

artefacts an art form An exhibition of Dinka artefacts made by a local artist has been launched in Caroline Springs. Mary Anwat (pictured) handcrafted the domestic pieces in Melton using wool, palm leaves and beans. They can be used as household items and for weddings, ceremonies, food production and other cultural occasions. Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik encouraged residents to check out the exhibition at Caroline Springs Gallery. “Mary’s pieces are beautifully crafted and for many of us would be considered as works of art. But for Mary and her family, each item is used for practical purposes in her village in South Sudan.” Gourd spoons and bowls are used for eating, collecting and drinking water, and growing staples such as corn and wheat. A man was dragged out of last week’s council meeting by police and another ejected after a fiery row during public question time. About 15 police officers and four security guards assembled at the council chamber before the meeting began after a social-media campaign urged frustrated ratepayers to “occupy Melton council”. After 40 minutes, a man began a heated exchange with council officers. The man interrupted proceedings and asked: “Who’s paying for the police force tonight? I’d like to know.” Mayor Kathy Majdlik asked the man to be quiet three times before he was removed by two police officers. Inspector Stephen Mutton said the man was taken to Melton police station for questioning. “We had to remove two people from the meeting, our investigations are ongoing,” he said. “The chairwoman requested us to remove those people, so we did. One “WHO’S was released straight away, one was PAYING FOR taken back to police station.” THE POLICE A sign on the door of the council FORCE chamber said: “Any items of disguise TONIGHT?” are not to be carried or worn in the council meeting.” Some residents wore Guy Fawkes masks at the July meeting. Guy Fawkes was a member of a group who attempted to blow up the English Parliament and kill the king of England in 1605. It’s understood this particular group of residents, responsible for disruptions at most of the meetings held this year, believes local government is unconstitutional and should not be able to impose rates or local laws. It also claims the Commonwealth of Australia is a corporation registered in the US. Council chief executive Kel Tori said it was disappointing that some residents continued to demonstrate a lack of respect for the council and community. “Their behaviour impinges on the rights of other people in the gallery, who come with the purpose to listen to the deliberations of the members elected by the community,” he said. “Council is steadfastly focused on returning the council chamber to orderly conduct.” \ STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

fine evaders in officers’ sights

BRIEFS

MELTON

Only 53 of 17,000 Melton residents with outstanding fines or warrants handed themselves into police as part of last week’s Operation Surrender. The one-day operation gave residents with long-standing legal issues the opportunity to come clean. On August 20, the Weekly reported that 17,000 residents in Melton, Caroline Springs and Deer Park had a total of $38 million in outstanding fines and warrants. Police set up a mobile bus opposite Melton police station as part of Thursday’s operation. The 53 people who voluntarily attended the bus had 803 outstanding warrants combined, totalling $264,694. Eight residents owed more than $10,000 each in fines or warrants. The largest amount owed by one person was $22,000. Police and sheriff ’s officers explained what was involved in the execution of warrants and organised appropriate arrangements to clear fines or deal with pending court proceedings for those who came forward. Melton police Inspector Stephen Mutton said despite the low strike rate, the operation had been a success. He warned police would conduct operations in coming weeks, including road blocks in Melton and Caroline Springs, to target those who didn’t come forward. \ STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN

Tales of work experience are often limited to frustrated teens describing a week handcuffed to a photocopier or doing mind-numbing coffee runs for people who call them “kiddo”. However, Bacchus Marsh College students will go much further in their original production, Community Junction Television 4. The play, at the college’s drama hall from September 10 to 12, is set in a television studio where students are completing work experience. It’s a comedic and raw look at the practice of work experience, with plenty of singing and dancing. The lead roles are being filled by (pictured from left) Linzy Marsden, Lafai Key and Faith Key. Directed by drama department head Chris Doughty, the production involves 65 students from all year levels. “The dancing’s been rehearsed since February, and the acting since May, so we’re hoping it’s going to come together perfectly,” choreographer and year 11 student Aimiee Edwards said. “We’ve worked really hard, and it’s been great fun.” Year 9 and 10 students Kassandra Peterson and Carly Eyckens are co-producing the play. Doors open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Tickets cost $5 for students, $10 for adults. Details: 5367 9500. \ PRISCILLA MOCA

Plans for a 75-lot housing development in Kurunjang are a step closer, with Melton council deciding to seek approval to rezone the land. Developer Peyton Waite sought to have 5.2 hectares on Outlook Ride and Gunnawarra Road rezoned from low-density residential zone to residential 1 to allow the development to take place. At last week’s council meeting, Cr Broden Borg said he would not support such a plan until there was more than one way in and out of Kurunjang. But after much debate, the application was approved by a vote of 5-1. Authorisation will now be sought from Planning Minister Matthew Guy to rezone the land and allow for public consultation. Several residents who live near the site voiced their opposition at last week’s meeting. Their concerns included an increase in traffic and congestion problems, especially in peak hours. Cr Borg said the lack of access to Kurunjang could cause a range of problems. “I can not in good faith or with good judgment support any future developments in this area without there being another entry or exit,” he said. “All it takes is some unforeseen circumstance to block off that entry and exit that is there now, and then suddenly we have cars causing a whole other range of concerns.” A spokesman for Mr Guy could not be reached for comment. \ SZ

TRANSPORT BACKLOG (Weekly, August 27)

SPRINGS STATION (Weekly, August 27)

Our state government celebrates “growth” but fails to raise enough revenue to provide the basics in the growth corridors. Comprehensive reform to provide infrastructure where it’s needed is usually done by adding more people, or economic growth to increase cash flows. It’s a spiral of growth, and then debt, and more growth is needed to cover the debt. The route to escaping this growth cycle and decline is a stable population. Instead, the “improvements” of Victoria and its services are being bogged down by perpetual growth. TONY B \ VIA WEB

American author Marianne Wiggins said: “What thrills me about trains is not their size or their equipment, but the fact that they are moving, that they embody a connection between unseen places.” For Bacchus Marsh commuter Jim Scott (pictured), there are no unseen places on his train route – he’s been riding the rails to and from Melbourne since his high-school days in the 1970s. “I’ve travelled more than 500,000 kilometres since I first started commuting,” he said. Mr Scott, who recently retired after more than 28 years in finance and sales with Australia Post, said he made the most of the Ballarat line commute. “I’ve got to know quite a few people over the course of time and usually I’m chatting with someone or reading a book, might have music going,” he said. “Over time I’ve got to know regular faces … they come and go.” Mr Scott said he had witnessed several

major collisions and accidents during his years of commuting, but one in particular stuck in his mind. “A couple of young fellas were mucking around when they had the old red carriages, and one accidentally opened the door and fell out the back of the train,” he said. ‘‘He survived but he was badly injured, broken legs, the whole lot.” Mr Scott said he hoped Bacchus Marsh station would be upgraded soon, and that one day the line would be electrified. “Given the number of people who are catching trains out this way, and that it keeps on growing, it’s something that definitely should be looked at,” he said. ‘‘Public transport is an important service.” For Mr Scott, train travelling will become a relic of his school and working life. He said he wasn’t “too impressed” with the myki system and was happy it was only recently rolled out on the Ballarat line. “When I get down to Melbourne now, I’ll probably drive,” he said. \ PRISCILLA MOCA

PRESSURE OVER firefighter CANCER compensation PARLIAMENT

Western suburbs firefighters and the Greens have accused the state government of attempting to “kill off ” legislation that would give firefighters easier access to cancer compensation. The government last week announced that it would set up an assessment panel to assist in the management of professional and volunteer firefighter claims. But it said it was “not convinced” of the link between firefighting and certain types of cancers. The panel, to be managed by WorkCover, comes after continued pressure on the government to back the legislation after international studies found firefighters have a higher rate of cancer due to the chemicals.

daffodil day raises cancer funds A Daffodil Day morning tea at St Andrews Uniting Church in Bacchus Marsh has raised $2500 for cancer research. “I’m absolutely delighted as this money goes towards something so important, finding a cure for cancer,” event organiser Liz Davie said. About 90 people enjoyed a cup of tea and a bite to eat at the August 23 fund-raiser, which included a stall. Volunteers and local businesses chipped in to provide goods and decorations. “It’s wonderful there’s so much community support,” Ms Davie said. “Everyone’s faced cancer at some point, whether themselves or a family member who has suffered.” \

customised celebration Family-owned Bacchus Marsh company Customised Training celebrated 10 years of delivering courses and nationally recognised qualifications on August 16. Mother and daughter duo Cheryl and Sherryn Pyke have helped train 7500 people since the centre opened its doors. The company, which employs 47 people, has had about 1700 students start or complete training so far this year. The registered training organisation offers courses in five areas – disabilities, education, children’s services, building and construction, and business. Managing director Sherryn Pyke said the past five years had been a period of rapid growth for the company. “There’s been lots of funding changes and changes in how it’s all delivered,” she said. “Where before it was in classrooms and training on the job, it’s now blended with online classes.” \ parish bash pulls in $10,500 A Party at The Parish has raised more than $10,500 for the upgrade of netball courts at St Bernard’s Primary School in Bacchus Marsh. The over-18s event featured local band Funkshun, raffles, games and an auction. \

marsh ses crew gets good gear Bacchus Marsh’s State Emergency Service unit will find its life-saving work enhanced, thanks to a donation of equipment from a major insurer. Operational gear provided by AAMI includes a portable lighting kit and equipment to help with road rescues. Bacchus Marsh SES spokesman David Lambrick said the annual gift of equipment, based on the unit’s specific requirements, helped ensured volunteers and the community received support when they needed it most. \

Staughton College students Bianca Ferri, Madeline Bowker, Jonny Ferri, Taylah Field and Christena Simester tune up for the Melton school’s adidas fun run, which will raise money for the school. Tomorrow’s run coincides with National Health and Physical Education Day. Teacher Steven McSweeney says the fun run is a great platform to get students excited about physical activity. “The college is setting a new standard for other schools to follow by choosing a way to raise money that delivers positive messages about the importance of physical activity to a child’s healthy growth and development,” he says. \ SZ

units plan rejected DARLEY

kids grow a sweet future

(WAYNE HAWKINS)

A Darley developer will appeal Moorabool council’s decision to knock back a proposal for three one-bedroom units on a single block. Neighbours of the site in Anile Place, in the Somerton Court Estate, told last Thursday’s council meeting that the 490-square-metre-block was originally set aside for one home. Nine of the 12 landowners in the small court objected to the permit. “It’s an overdevelopment of an already small estate,” resident Nadia Sidea said. Ms Sidea said increased traffic and wear and tear of communal property were the objectors’ main concerns. Another resident, Jacqueline Elliot, said the three dwellings did not fit the neighbourhood’s character. “It’s going to mean increased traffic and we have only one access point, so if there’s an emergency our escape is hindered.” Council staff recommended the planning application be rejected on these grounds, adding it did not achieve the objectives contained within the Moorabool Planning Scheme, nor have the consent of a majority of owners’ corporation members. Applicant Tony Anile said the area was in need of different housing types. “People do want smaller housing rather than larger blocks, and this fills that gap,” he said. Mr Anile said he was disappointed in the “fraught” application process, and planned to take the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. “I think council has taken the easy road and just did what the residents say so it can wash its hands of it. It was a waste of time and money.” \ PRISCILLA MOCA

Spring is the time for new growth, and Bacchus Marsh Primary School grade 3 pupils including Deegan and Billy (pictured) got right into the spirit last Thursday. Children planted their own pots in a vertical garden known as a “green wall”. The new program is designed to encourage children to enjoy the outdoors and learn about their natural environment. Their first lesson covered basics such as watering and fertilising, plant growth, harvesting and seed germination. Student Ruby said she couldn’t wait to enjoy the fruits of their hard work. “I liked planting in our new garden. Now we’re going to make sure we water them so we can watch the strawberries grow and eat them.” \ PM

orty years ago his appearance in a shopping centre attracted 20,000 screaming fans. Today he stands alone outside Big W at Werribee Plaza. Such is the dichotomy between little Jamie and grown-up Jim that no one affords him a second glance. Yet, if you were to introduce him to those passing pedestrians, they would fawn with fond nostalgia and tell all their friends: “You won’t believe who I saw in Donut King today … ” There was a time when – like a song title on his second album – Jamie Redfern, or Jim as he prefers to be called these days, was Sitting on Top of the World, feted by the likes of Elvis Presley and Sammy Davis Jr. Now he is rebuilding after the global financial crisis knocked the stuffing out of the performing arts academy he runs with wife Judy. “It really killed the discretionary spending on things like singing and dancing lessons,” he says. “We were lucky to hold on because so many schools closed. But we are doing OK now and the signs are there things are getting better.’’ The couple are busily extending their Star Quality Song and Dance Studio network from west to east, with plans for another Pay TV program to showcase talent. Redfern, 56, is ever the optimist. He needed to be to survive the bruising transition from the boy-king of pop everyone wanted a piece of to just another man in the mall. “I’m the bitter and twisted one, aren’t I, hon?” Redfern’s wife of 26 years and mother of their daughters Hayley, 18, and Taylah, 16, laughs with a playful dig in his side. The pair met at Sheiks Disco in 1986 after Redfern’s mate dared him to ask the lovely girl who kept smiling at him to dance. “He egged me on that much I walked over and said, ‘Hello, how are you? Would you like to dance?’ and she said, ‘No thanks, I don’t like this song’. I just sat next to her while she ignored me and I looked over to my mate, saying now pay up, when I

felt a little tap on my shoulder and she said, ‘But I will dance to this one, I love this one’.” It was I Was Made for Lovin’ You by Kiss. “And that was it.” Redfern had always had an eye for the girls. At the end of each show of his US tour, he would kiss a girl in the audience. He was more Tom Jones than Liberace, and couldn’t fathom it when he came back at age 15 and people speculated that he was gay. “I’m like, me gay, why? And dad said, ‘Well, I guess because you toured with Liberace’ and I said, ‘so what?’ I was so naive.’’ Rumours were the least of his problems. Towards the end of his hugely successful American tour, the young star was on the brink of signing a major contract with film giant MGM when everything imploded. “My contracts in Australia were about to run out. There was only about a month to go ... but at that time my voice was changing and the keys were having to be brought down,’’ he says. “I asked them to give me a break for a year, but nobody did and nobody listened. I do feel a bit resentful about that now. Being a singing teacher, I look after kids’ voices and I am very aware of when you need rest and why.” But the money machine kept rolling. “When dad and I did a deal with MGM, not too many people on the American or Australian side were happy because they wanted to be involved. There was so much to-ing and fro-ing that the person who missed out was me, the little boy who had already made everybody a ton of money.” Redfern never saw much of it. “Let’s just say I was the highest-paid entertainer in the country. I was doing two gigs a day at $1500 and it was all put in trust, and by the time I got that money there was hardly anything left.” When he left Australia in 1972, the future King of Pop’s departure was televised and the Young Talent Time team waved him off at the airport. He became the Pocket Sinatra, appearing live in America on The Johnny Carson Show, but once home he struggled to get a gig. “I’m OK with it now. But for a little while there I felt like I was in a twilight zone. It was like, is this real? What just happened?” Redfern credits God and his family, particularly his late mother Mary, for his survival. It can’t have been easy. At a time when Braybrook boys were scrapping and smoking, Redfern was being dressed in lace cuffs and velveteen. “I had to sing the way they wanted me to sing, I had to dress in a certain way that I really didn’t want to dress, and when I spoke no one wanted me to sound too smart,” he recalls. “Sometimes when I look back, I cringe. There’s this interview on YouTube with Ernie Sigley and everyone says it is so cute. But when I watch it I get embarrassed because it wasn’t me. It wasn’t me being me. ” Today Jim has found his own voice and is singing again, doing the odd solo gig and shows with brother and fellow Young Talent Time veteran Derek. “I want to enjoy that side of my life and take a bit of a punt on it now,’’ he says. “I’m starting to create shows that are a bit more pop, rock and blues-oriented. I might not have that really big voice I had as a kid, but it is still a good voice, and I think as you get older you become so much more clever in how you interpret the music.” Redfern is also writing songs and has penned some for a Wiggles album. He can’t see himself writing the book although he could pack it with great anecdotes, like the time he sat on Ginger Rogers’ knee and asked if it was true her legs were insured for a million dollars. “Yes,” she had replied. “One for $600,000, the other for $400,000.” Which one am I sitting on, he had asked. “The $400,000 one.” Redfern swapped legs. “I don’t like the cheap seats,” he quipped. “The thing about writing a book is I wouldn’t like to gloss over the terrible things and the political stuff, and there was a hell of a lot of it. I prefer to look at brighter things, at better things. Oh boy, does that sound like the Jamie Redfern of old,” he laughs. \ sharris@mmpgroup.com.au

Decanter \ Ben Thomas explores coonawarra

S

“there’s a two-week difference in ripening”

Sam Kurtz

itting halfway between Melbourne and Adelaide, South Australia’s Coonawarra is a unique wine region. First planted with vines by John Riddoch in 1890, it began to find fame in the 1950s when Samuel Wynn identified its red soil as having potential to produce great table wines. Coonawarra’s terra rossa soils may be famous, but a maritime climate – despite being 50 kilometres inland – plays an equally important part in the region’s wines. Known worldwide for its cabernet sauvignon, the region is no one-trick pony; its unique climate provides an ideal environment for several grapes and wine styles. “There’s a huge difference in the climate from the north to the south in Coonawarra. It’s only a distance of 16 kilometres, but there’s a two-week difference in ripening between the north and the south,” says Sam Kurtz, chief winemaker for St Hugo and group red winemaker for Orlando wines. “You can really see that in the style of wines, too. With the two-week ripening difference, the final ripening is happening at a much cooler part of the year, with cooler nights, and you tend to get more herbaceousness in wines at the extreme southern side. “You get very good varietal character out of the more southern parts, while on the north side you tend to get loads of power, but generally the wines are a little less pure in their varietal character.” Kurtz says this difference in ripening period means that other grape varieties also thrive in Coonawarra. “I think the north end of Coonawarra works well with shiraz. The biggest challenge to riesling is botrytis and it’s similar across the board with the whites, but you can get some excellent wines all the same.” A big influence on the region is a cold gulf stream that

Puppy carers needed!

makes the water off the cost below Coonawarra colder than that off Tasmania. “You’ve got that very cold body of water and no significant hills between the coast and Coonawarra.” This diversity in styles means the major players in the region, such as Wynns, Penfolds and St Hugo, whose cabernet sauvignon is Australia’s biggest-selling red wine over $30, can produce a consistent wine each year. “Those things do work well for us – we get an opportunity to play with flavours and in the event of a warmer or cooler season [than average] we try to maintain a consistency of a house style by incorporating more or less wines from the various subregions and vineyards in the blend.” \ bthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au Online only »

Ben Thomas’ weekly wine selections

The terra rossa strip In the heart of the Coonawarra lies the terra rossa strip, a 27-kilometre long, two-kilometre wide mixture of soil and sand that sits on top of limestone. The limestone behaves like sponge, trapping moisture away for the vines to access during the dry summer months. It gets its distinctive rusty red colour from the presence of iron oxide in the soil. When asked how the terra rossa affected the wines, a winemaker recently told me: “Line and length. They aren’t the flashiest wines, but they have line and length, every vintage, year in, year out.” \

renovation

he announcement of the lowest interest rates for 50 years looks set to boost the housing and renovations markets. But people can soon lose their financial advantage if they don’t do their homework, according to Archicentre, the building and advisory service of the Australian Institute of Architects. “Many TV home renovation shows make renovating look easy but the reality is purchasing a house for successful renovation requires planning and a thorough property assessment, starting with choosing the right property,” Archicentre national operations manager David Hallet said. “People buying to renovate should not forget the basics of carefully assessing a property as a renovators dream could soon turn into a nightmare instead of a profit-making investment.” Mr Hallet said it was essential to inspect and assess footings, stumps, wiring, roofing and plumbing before purchasing a property. “A potential home-buyer should check out the local council’s planning or development regulations to ensure the renovation will be

approved,” he said. Mr Hallet said that when buyers were thinking of purchasing a house for renovation, they should start with a thorough and independent inspection to avoid unbudgeted costs associated with termites or major structural faults. “Following an inspection, it’s wise to develop an initial design concept to ensure the property will meet all renovation requirements, including compliance with building and planning regulations, before signing a contract,” he said. “A design concept also allows for costing the project to ensure the renovation is financially sound.” Mr Hallet said this approach limited investor risk considerably by avoiding: • Purchasing a property that has major faults. • Trying to undertake a renovation not supported by the existing floorplan. • Expensive planning and legal costs, and council delays for a non-conforming design. • Pricey build costs as the designer plans extensive structural works. \

HILLSIDE chases GRAND TRIO OF FLAGS EDFL

Hillside will start a warm favourite to claim the club’s first senior premiership when the Sharks face Moonee Valley in the Essendon District Football League division 2 grand final on Saturday. A 106-point win against the Valley in the qualifying final two weeks ago, combined with Moonee Valley’s draining come-from-behind win against East Keilor in the preliminary final, leaves Hillside in the box seat.

essendon knocked out VFL

One hand grab: Essendon’s Jason Ashby out-marks Werribee’s Will Sullivan. (DARREN HOWE)

Essendon was eliminated from the Victorian Football League finals on Sunday, beaten 17.14 (116) to 15.7 (97) by a determined Werribee outfit. The Bombers, kicking with a strong breeze at North Port Oval, had a hot start against the Tigers, booting six goals in opening term to lead by 28 points at the first break. Cory Dell’Olio was electric up forward, bobbing up for three goals, while Patrick Ambrose, Matthew Bate and Travis Colyer were also among the goalkickers. Notable players missing from the side included Joe Daniher, who is scheduled for knee surgery, and Jason Winderlich, still struggling with a hamstring injury. Essendon’s pressure was relentless early, choking the Tigers and preventing them from getting any significant run. Josh Freezer did a fantastic job on dangerous forward Ben Warren, wearing him like a glove and restricting him for much of the afternoon. But the second quarter turned the game on its head. Werribee slotted eight goals for the term, maximising its opportunities when it went forward – which was often. The Bombers struggled to stop the Tigers’ run and, with several goals slotted from the boundary line, fell behind. Trailing by 24 points at half-time, Essendon began the third term brightly when Alex Browne scored the first goal of the quarter with the wind still blowing. Will Hams and Dell’Olio added goals and the lead was cut to four points. Scott Gumbleton had a chance to put the Bombers in front but missed. Werribee lifted its intensity and got a run of goals against the wind. Dell’Olio added his fifth late in the term but, crucially for Werribee, Ben Speight dribbled one through seconds before the siren to give the Tigers a 16-point lead at three-quarter time. When Ben McKinley got his fourth midway through the term, it put Werribee 27 points up. The Bombers kept attacking but struggled to match the Tigers. \ DANIEL PAPROTH dpaproth@mmpgroup.com.au

BRIEFS SOCCER Melton’s march to the FFV state league 5 title continued with a 4-0 win against Lara on Saturday. Two goals to Chris Briggs and one each to Carlos Velasquez and Beau Chang gave Melton its 15th win from 18 games. The Phoenix (47 points) are on top of the ladder, ahead by four points with a game in hand from second-placed Point Cook (43) and third-placed Brimbank Stallions (42). Melton plays a catch-up match tomorrow from 8.30pm against Melbourne Lions at Arndell Park Reserve in Truganina. However, there will be no Melton match this Saturday. \ TAC CUP Western Jets will meet Calder Cannons in the first semi-final after Calder lost to Geelong Falcons and Western eliminated Murray Bushrangers at the weekend. Western rallied from 15 points down at the last change on Sunday to win 10.12 (72) to 9.9 (63) at Princes Park. Holding Murray to just three behinds in the last quarter made the difference as Western stormed to the lead on the back of strong performances from Melton’s Lachlan Hickey, Jake Greiser and three goals from David Iaccarino. Darley’s Billy Myers kicked a goal for Western in the match. Calder led at quarter-time against Geelong on Saturday but was unable to match the intensity thereafter, losing 13.11 (89) to 7.7 (49). The results set up an all-west affair in this Sunday’s semi-final, which starts at 11.15am at Princes Park in Carlton. The winner will advance to a preliminary final against Eastern Ranges the following weekend. \ CHFL Ballan’s reserves bowed out of the finals in the first semi on Saturday with a six-point defeat to Springbank. The 7.6 (48) to 6.6 (42) defeat means there are no remaining Moorabool football teams in contention for a CHFL premiership this season. \

Bombers, BLADE IN SHARP SEMI FORM

Melton Centrals claimed a place in the Riddell District Netball League grand final after seeing off Riddell Bombers by five goals on Saturday. Romsey has stirred from fifth on the table and could yet be the Blues’ grand-final opponent after dumping out Sunbury Kangaroos in straight sets. Centrals won the A grade second semi-final by five goals, 38-33, against Riddell on Saturday to advance directly to the decider. Twice stretching the gap beyond six goals, Centrals were pegged back to level by a Bomber comeback in the second quarter. But a Centrals surge in the third, led by goalers Renee Hulls (20) and Bec Morabito (18), meant Riddell was too far adrift for a second comeback. The Bombers will attempt to bring coach Yasmin McGregor and key mid-courter Cayley Armstrong back from short-term injuries for this weekend’s preliminary final against Romsey. The Redbacks revived the form that has taken them to three consecutive grand finals by knocking out Sunbury Kangaroos 43-38 on Saturday. Sunbury led by small margins early but it was Romsey that finished the stronger after scores were level at three-quarter time. Hope Hamilton shot 26 goals to lead the scoring while playing coach Danni Davidson and mid-courter Toni Lind were better Redbacks players. Saturday’s preliminary final between Riddell and Romsey starts at 12.30pm at Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon. In B grade, Broadford plays Riddell, with Macedon waiting in the grand final. In C grade, Rupertswood plays Riddell, with Sunbury Kangaroos already in the grand final. \ TEO PELLIZZERI tpellizzeri@mmpgroup.com.au

Riddell is one win from a grand final appearance after a 14-goal second half saw the Bombers destroy Romsey 20.14 (134) to 5.9 (39) on Sunday. The Bombers will meet Sunbury in a preliminary final at Tony Clarke Reserve, Macedon, this Saturday. Thrust into a knock-out semi-final after losing to Diggers Rest in the first week of finals, Riddell needed a strong performance against in-form Romsey to keep its premiership hopes alive. A week earlier, the Redbacks had a stunning 97-point win over Macedon, reigniting their season after a string of injuries hit hard. At Riddells Creek Reserve on Sunday, Romsey took a five-point lead into quarter time. Both teams wasted their chances early, Riddell kicking five behinds and Romsey four. The Bombers, determined to atone for the loss to Diggers Rest, dominated the second term with five goals. The third quarter saw Riddell edge further in front, adding another five goals. Romsey kept in touch with three, but at the final break was 36 points in arrears. Redbacks coach Mark Pederson said his players’ ability to run out the game against Macedon surprised the coaching staff. But there would be no repeat against the minor premier. Romsey did not trouble the scorers in the final term and Riddell played at its attacking best. Aaron Blade was best for Riddell for the second week running. The 2009 Bowen medallist is peaking when the Bombers need him most. Paul Sahlberg was terrific with four goals. This Wednesday night the RDFL’s Bowen and Ryan medal counts will be held in Taylors Lakes. \ DANIEL PAPROTH

teams’ passion lets coach keep his pact “The best win in 40 years.” That was the catchcry in the clubrooms of victorious Darley on Sunday after the Devils pulled off an unbelievable comeback against East Point to keep its Ballarat Football League premiership hopes alive. A chance for redemption against minor premier North Ballarat City awaits in the first semi-final this weekend. The Devils suffered what at the time looked like a season-defining loss against North City in early June, kicked itself out of a winning position, 3.18 to North City’s 7.10. North City comes into this weekend’s match with the prospect of a straight-sets finals exit hanging over its heads. And the never-say-die Devils have the power of momentum behind them. Darley coach Rod MacPherson said the win against East Point showed enormous character within his group. “I haven’t been around the club that long but Peter Leonard, who is a former president, said it was the best win he’s seen in 40 years,” MacPherson said. “We made a pact to each other before the game and we knew this group had only played one bad quarter for the year. This group has got a lot of passion in the way it plays. We made a pact that the season was not going to end today and, to the boys’ credit, they fought right to the end.” Sunday’s first semi-final between North Ballarat City and Darley at Eastern Oval in Ballarat starts at 2.15pm. \ PAT NOLAN, Ballarat Courier

Earlier in the match, it seemed as though East Point was in cruise control. Five of the first six goals went the way of the red, white and blue and spearhead Jordan had booted three goals by half-time, looking in

dangerous form. However, he would not slot another major for the rest of the match and East Point would only kick another four goals in total. \ PAT NOLAN, Ballarat Courier

burras laughing on their way to grand final rdfl

Diggers Rest has done a great job of keeping the lid firmly sealed in the Riddell District Football League this season. The Burras, yet to win a senior RDFL premiership, are through to the grand final after defeating reigning premier Sunbury 8.10 (58) to 8.6 (54) at McPherson Park on Saturday. It is one step better than they achieved last season. Diggers Rest was the minor premier in 2012 but was dumped out in the preliminary final. When the siren blasted to signal the end of Saturday’s qualifying final Burras coach Jamie Elliott, his staff and players threw their hands in the air. Elliott was a happy man following the game but remained pragmatic, saying the lid remained on with a game still to play. “It was a bit emotional, that last quarter and a half,” he said. “We’ve got one more hurdle. We’ve made it, so we’ve got a chance, don’t we?” If Elliott was happy, Sunbury coach Chris Meacham was the opposite. He knew his side’s poor first half had cost them a chance at victory. The Kangaroos trailed by 29 points at half-time after a listless second term saw Diggers Rest dominate and get out to what proved to be a match-winning lead. But Sunbury kicked six of eight goals in the second half to nearly steal a win in front of a vociferous crowd. A crosswind blowing towards the clubrooms made scoring tough for both sides, but Diggers Rest had the better of the opening quarter. Steven Freeth kicked the game’s first goal, a lovely, well-judged kick in the wind. With key target Brent Tuckey well held by Daniel Gregory, Brandon Kilty had to step up, and he did, kicking two, ensuring the Burras went into quarter time with a six-point lead. The second term, however, was largely one-sided. The Kangaroos failed to capitalise on some early opportunities as both sides fumbled early in the quarter. Diggers Rest got the ascendancy when Tuckey took a great pack mark and kicked truly, followed shortly by Brad Sluggett and Kilty goals, and by half-time the contest appeared over. But the Kangaroos refused to lie down. Meacham asked for a greater physical presence from his players, and they answered the call, lifting their intensity across the ground. boundary to give Sunbury the first of five goals for the term. The Roos fed on the emotion, gathering momentum with every forward thrust. Defender Joeb Ploog went forward, and it proved a masterstroke, the defender lighting up McPherson Park with three goals. Amazingly, it gave Sunbury a two-point lead at three-quarter time. the last quarter and both sides were nervous early, with several turnovers, free kicks and 50-metre penalties. Tuckey broke the deadlock midway through the term, finally breaking free of Gregory – who did a brilliant job on him all afternoon – and put Diggers back in front. Minutes later Cole Laurie marked and kicked a superb goal from 55 metres out. Sunbury had chances late in the game

but were thwarted by Brett Caton, who was invaluable in defence. Lenny Clark played another terrific game for Diggers in the ruck and was easily the most influential big man on the ground. Sunbury lives to fight another day, and will meet Riddell in the preliminary final this weekend. \ DANIEL PAPROTH dpaproth@mmpgroup.com.au
