Mr Yates could not be reached for comment. The former directors will face the Supreme Court next month.

‘‘Last year was horrible and we were really happy when we heard some of them are going to court,’’ she said. ‘‘Something needs to be done and we’d like to see some justice.’’ As reported by the Weekly, in a letter last year, administrator Jim Downey said his preliminary view was that Mowbray may have been

insolvent since 2007. Except for 2010, Mowbray recorded losses every year from 2007 to 2011, totalling almost $5 million. Mr Downey last year said parents may have a claim against directors and officers for breaching their duty under the Corporations Act to prevent Mowbray from trading while insolvent. The letter also said directors could face legal claims in relation to family deposits, prepaid school fees and expenditure on a joint venture with an international school in China. Mr Wallace said he was perplexed by the summons when there had been 30 or 40 other former directors of the

FORMER Mowbray College students and parents are relieved that three former directors have been summonsed to appear in court over their role in the management of the failed school. Mowbray’s three campuses at Melton and Caroline Springs closed last June after the school collapsed with debts of $18 million. John Wallace, Tony KeirstenWakefield and Kevin Yates will face questions about their involvement with the school, which had about 1200 students and 200 staff. Mr Keirsten-Wakefield told the Weekly the summons was ‘‘somewhat of a surprise’’. ‘‘I am surprised that three of the exdirectors have been identified and not all of the directors when there were upwards of 30 over a period of time.’’ Mr Keirsten-Wakefield served as principal early last year and was involved on the school’s volunteer board for more than five years. ‘‘In this instance, it [Mowbray’s voluntarily run board] proved not to be successful, but you can always point to exceptions of other schools who have succeeded with this model.’’ Parent Sam Murgo said he was pleased former directors would face questioning. He said many parents had prepaid school fees for the forthcoming quarter, some in excess of $10,000. ‘‘We probably won’t get that back, but even if we don’t get the money back it would be good to find out what happened,’’ Mr Murgo said. He said his two children had settled into their new school, but it had taken time to adjust. Former year 12 student Amy Govic said she also wanted answers.

Top shelf project MELTON’S $20 million library is taking shape. Shelving, furniture, heating, cooling and lighting are among the final touches to be added to the new learning hub in McKenzie Street. Mayor Kathy Majdlik (pictured) said construction of a car park, footpaths and landscaping would be completed by late April. An official opening is planned for the end of May. Cr Majdlik said the hub would have meeting and learning spaces, a cafe, public computers and wireless connectivity, a teen lounge, maternal and child health suites, and a family history research area, plus an extensive collection of books, DVDs, and magazines. Melton Council has contributed about $15 million to the project, with other funding coming from the state and federal governments.

Man approaches children Police are urging anyone with information about an attempted child abduction in Caroline Springs to contact them. Detective Leading Senior Constable John Hageman said investigations continued into the incident, which occurred about 11am on December 9. He said a man approached three children playing in a reserve and bike path area in Clarkes Road. The man tried to entice the children away by asking them to go to a party and to try on some clothes. When the children tried the clothing on, the man massaged the shoulders of the youngest child. An older brother intervened and the man left the scene. He was wearing a blue bomber-style jacket, blue baseball cap with a red symbol on the front, a red shirt and spoke with a rough voice. Information to Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

He said the program helped more than 50,000 children in 2010-11. ‘‘It’s played an extremely important part in keeping kids engaged with school and local services, and it helped reduce the incidence of youth homelessness, substance abuse and suicide.’’ He called on the government to commit to the

Forums to discuss council rates changes BY ANDRIA COZZA

RESIDENTS could soon have more of a say on how their councils charge rates, according to Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Andrew Elsbury. Mr Elsbury is calling on ratepayers to have their say on how local rates are charged. The state government recently released draft ministerial guidelines after amending the Local Government Act to allow the Local Government Minister to set differential rating guidelines.

The move followed criticism that the increased use of differential systems was creating confusion. “There’s been a significant increase in the use of differential rates and in the inconsistency of their application, raising a number of community concerns,” Mr Elsbury said. Melton CEO Kel Tori said the council was involved in discussion groups and would make a submission about the draft guidelines after a full evaluation. He said the draft submission would be presented at the next council meeting on

March 5. Mr Tori said council encouraged residents to attend public forums being held tonight in Sunshine and tomorrow in the city. He said the council wanted guidelines that were easy to understand and implement. ‘‘There is general misunderstanding in the community about how the rates system operates.’’ Mr Tori said by applying differential ratings, the total amount of rates to be raised could be spread in different proportion than what would be the case with a uniform rate, shifting the

burden between different classes of property. ‘‘Council rates are a form of property tax,’’ Mr Tori said. ‘‘Having a rating strategy requires council to strike a balance between competing principles to come up with a mixture of rates and charges that provides the income needed for its annual budget while meeting the tests of equity, efficiency and simplicity.’’ To register for the forums, phone 9208 3631 or email local.government@dpcd.vic.gov.au

Farm’s just chicken feed

Mum lit fire to dry off kids A Brookfield woman, 31, will be charged after lighting a blaze on a total fire ban day. Police said the woman took her family swimming in a creek beside Clarkes Road, Brookfield, on February 17, and lit a small campfire to dry off her children. CFA and police were alerted. The fire was extinguished when they arrived. Police said it was extremely fortunate the fire did not spread.

Melton South Primary School pupils like Indianna, Kayla and Adib (pictured) are learning the value of community, thanks to their well-cared-for animal farm. Teacher Donna Teven says pupils have embraced the experience, which has been supported by several local businesses and the Melton-Bacchus Marsh Poultry Association. ‘‘It provides a peaceful environment where our students can relax and spend time with nature.’’ The school’s chicken coop, with its five chickens and two roosters, has produced 17 dozen eggs, which were donated to local charities. Ms Teven says the farm will soon benefit from the addition of guinea pigs, rabbits, lambs and ducks. ‘‘This year we intend to establish a compost system and provide animal therapy by making the animals accessible to the students throughout their school day.’’

Schoolgirl approached Police are seeking information after an attempted abduction in Kororoit Approach, Caroline Springs on February 18. They said a young girl was walking to school when she was approached by a dark blue van. The driver yelled at her to get in the vehicle. The victim ran away. She described the man as being in his 30s, skinny build with black hair and dark skin.

Veteran gets his due after 43 years NAVY Chief Vice-Admiral Ray Griggs has cleared up unfinished business dating back more than 40 years. Vietnam veteran and Caroline Springs resident Robert Barclay was a clearance diver who worked to identify and remove explosives threatening Australian and United States vessels between 1968 and 1970. Mr Barclay said it was a great honour to receive the medals earlier this month, even after 40 years. ‘‘It was particularly special for me because my 93-year-old mother attended and she was extremely proud,’’ he said. Mr Barclay said many people looked back at the Vietnam War and said Australian troops shouldn’t have been sent there. ‘‘So it was good to have some recognition and I’d like to think it was also for the many people who didn’t get recognised.’’ Mr Barclay and his team dived in the murky and polluted waters of South Vietnam’s harbours and river estuaries, often

CALDER Freeway motorists can no longer turn right into Calder Park Drive near the raceway. The right-turn lane from the freeway into Calder Park Drive was permanently closed last Thursday, with motorists advised to use the Kings Road interchange to head west. The left turn lane in and out of Calder Park Drive will remain open. A new U-turn option for drivers wanting to head towards Melbourne has been introduced opposite Organ Pipes Road. And a new acceleration lane designed for safer traffic mergers opened late last week. A VicRoads spokesman said these changes would reduce the number of right-turn crashes at Organ Pipes Road and Calder Park Drive, significantly improving safety along this section of the freeway. — Helen Grimaux

Due to an administrative oversight by the Australian Navy, members of the RAN clearance diving team 3 were not advised of their commendations until recently. While his mates received their long-overdue awards a couple of years ago, Mr Barclay was not in Australia at the time. So, 43 years on, it was time to settle a very important score. Vice-Admiral Griggs presented Mr Barclay with the Australian Defence Medal, the Australian Service Medal and the Australian Active Service Medal at a special ceremony at the office of federal Gorton Labor MP Brendan O’Connor. Mr Barclay was also presented with a US Navy commendation for his explosives clearance work during the Vietnam War. ‘‘He performed extraordinary work for Australia and we’re extremely grateful for his bravery,’’ Mr O’Connor said.

Funds staunch hospital cuts BY BEN CAMERON IT will take several weeks for Djerriwarrh Health Services to return to full capacity after a federal government backflip over funding cuts. Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will receive $386,000 directly from the government after earlier being forced to trim services when the cash was stripped from its budget. It estimated more than 200 local patients would be forced to wait longer for elective surgery, with inpatient bed closures and operating theatre capacity reductions set from March 29 to April 14. Hospital chief executive Bruce Marshall said things would soon return to normal. ‘‘With the budget cut returned, we will be able to undo the cost-

saving strategy and get on with treating patients,’’ he said. But Mr Marshall was unsure how funding would be returned and what aspects of the hospital’s cost-saving strategies could be undone at such short notice. ‘‘Fortunately our health service has been ahead on elective surgery at this stage of the year.’’ Liberal candidate for Ballarat John Fitzgibbon said the federal government had admitted it was responsible for the ‘‘blame game’’ by reinstating the funds. ‘‘It’s only when Labor has realised that they will lose votes over this that they are now trying to buy back support,’’ he said. Ballarat Labor MP Catherine King called on the state government to reinstate $616 million she said it had cut from its health budget.

Hepatitis drug breakthrough BY LAURA LITTLE HEPATITIS C patients will have better access to treatments after the approval of two new drugs for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. The federal government announced last Tuesday that telaprevir and boceprevir would be placed on the PBS after months of lobbying by health workers. As reported by the Weekly, the new drugs have been found to reduce treatment times and increase cure rates. Dr Alex Thompson, head of hepatology research at St Vincents Hospital, which runs a hepatitis clinic at Werribee, said telaprevir and boceprevir were raising cure rates from 40 per cent to 80 per cent for chronic hepatitis C. Hepatitis Victoria chief executive Melanie Eagle, who chaired a western suburbs roundtable discussion earlier this month, said telaprevir and bocep-

revir would have ‘‘real life impacts’’ on patients. The organisation says infection rates are on the rise in the western suburbs, as is the number of patients needing treatment. Maribyrnong has the third-highest rate of hepatitis infections in metropolitan Melbourne, followed by Brimbank. Wyndham, Hume and Melton have been found to have large populations of at-risks groups. Ms Eagle said the drugs offered patients hope. ‘‘They are a more successful, less intrusive form of treatment. We’re urging people with hepatitis to make an appointment with their doctor and discuss these new treatments now.’’ Prime Minister and Lalor MP Julia Gillard said by listing the drugs on the PBS, the government was preventing people with hepatitis C paying up to $78,000 a year for treatment.

Daily at dawn Melton’s Christ Church Anglican Church has celebrated the efforts of opportunity shop volunteer Joan Mitchell, 96. Manager Tracey Burn (pictured with Sister Elisa Helen and Joan) said the volunteer of 15 years worked tirelessly and was famous for her date scones, which she makes at 5am each day.

AFRICAN leaders have welcomed the settlement of a drawn-out racial discrimination case between a group of young African-Australian men in the western suburbs and Victoria Police. The case stemmed from allegations the young men were regularly stopped by police, mostly in Flemington and North Melbourne, for no legitimate reason. The men claimed they were subjected to racial discrimination, including assaults, racial taunts and abuse, and racial profiling. The case was settled at the Federal Court last Monday. The claims of harassment date back as far as 2006. As part of the settlement, Victoria Police agreed to an inquiry to examine its own policies on stopand-search and person checks and its crosscultural training system. African community leader Abeselom Nega said it was a win for youth in the north-west who had long felt marginalised by police. He said the release of statistics last year, showing Sudanese and Somali-born Victorians were five times more likely to commit a crime, had only worsened relations with police. ‘‘There is no trust between African youth and the police so this is a

‘‘They feel they are targeted because of the colour of their skin,’’ he said. ‘‘This is a time when the community has questions and they will be demanding answers from police so we can all move forward.’’ Victoria University lecturer Elleni BerededSamuel applauded the courage of the young men. ‘‘There is a need to educate not only African youth but all youth in the west – whatever race they may be – on their rights and responsibilities,’’ she said. ‘‘The only way stereotypes of races can be broken is through education and understanding.’’ The accord reached between police and the six men comes five years after an initial complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission. An analysis of data from the police LEAP database by Melbourne University’s Professor Ian Gordon, commissioned on behalf of the six men, found that African men around Flemington and North Melbourne were roughly 2.5 times more likely to have their interaction recorded by police than the rest of the population. Speaking to the media after the settlement announcement, Chief Commissioner Ken Lay said he did not accept that racial profiling was taking place, but he admitted that relations between some police and young African men had been ‘‘quite problematic’’.

Message from the Mayor

Take part in Clean Up Australia Day

Come along to story time sessions

Scores of volunteers across the municipality will be donning gloves and heading to their local park or reserve to participate in Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 3 March 2013.

Story time sessions at the Caroline Springs and Melton libraries have commenced for the 2013 year.

Clean up Australia Day is a simple way you can take action to clean up and help preserve our local environment.

The baby and preschool story time sessions run throughout school terms and provide children with an introduction to the world of books.

Cr Kathy Majdlik

Business Clean Up Day will be held on Tuesday 26 February, Schools Clean Up Day will be held on Friday 1 March and the community day will be held on Sunday 3 March.

Baby story time sessions offer a fun, interactive and educational program for babies aged 0 – 36 months. Activities include rhymes, singing, finger plays, books and an introduction to Auslan.

Last year, 16 sites across the municipality were cleared of litter, thanks to 25 community groups, schools, church groups, scout groups, local businesses and individuals.

Sessions are held at Melton Library each Monday at 10am and at Caroline Springs Library on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10am.

To participate in Clean Up Australia Day, you can register your own site or head along to a registered site, with gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen and register as a volunteer.

Council also offers pre-school story time sessions which run for 45 minutes and include stories, songs, rhymes, finger plays and short activities.

The first of the Meet the Mayor series was held at Eynesbury recently and it was wonderful to see many residents come to talk to their Ward Councillor, myself and the Executive team and enjoy a sausage sizzle. I was very interested to hear about the issues and their initiatives for that community. I invite all residents to take up this opportunity and join me on Sunday 17 March in Melton, or Sunday 24 March in Caroline Springs or Sunday 7 April in Taylors Hill. Last week the ‘One Melbourne or Two’ report was launched and featured in the newspapers. This a detailed piece of work undertaken by Essential Economics on behalf of the Interface Councils which the City of Melton is part of. The report clearly demonstrates the disadvantage suffered by people living in Interface areas when compared to people living in middle and inner suburbs of Melbourne with respect to infrastructure provision, access to services and employment opportunity. This is part of the advocacy work being undertaken by the Interface Councils, particularly with the State Government in order to achieve better outcomes for Councils such as Melton. A copy of the report is available on Council’s website. Finally, I am pleased to see the Melton Library and Learning Hub is nearing completion. The next few weeks will see commissioning of the building services, including heating, cooling and lighting, construction of the car parking, internal footpaths and landscaping, installation of the joinery, completion of the glass facade, and procurement of library shelving and furniture. We are planning some great activities for the library and learning hub’s grand opening in May. Keep an eye out on Council’s website for further information. We’d love to see all our residents there, even if you’ve never set foot in a library before before.

Participants will be treated to a free barbeque at Hannah Watts Park in Melton after the clean-up. To get involved, register at www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au

Residents taking part in Clean Up Australia Day activities

Take part in Active Participation Survey What types of leisure activities do you take part in and what would you like to see more of? These are some of the questions Melton City Council would like answered as part of its 2013 Active Participation Survey. Council is reviewing its current and future provision of parks and leisure facilities across the municipality and is giving residents the opportunity to have their say. Council wants to learn more about what recreation activities you enjoy, your hobbies, past-times and interests; we also want to know where you take part in these activities and why.

Cr Nola Dunn

The survey covers participation in organised sports, such as football, netball or tennis; informal physical activity such as walking, gym work outs or golf, use of parks, playgrounds and paths, trails and creek reserves and the use of Council’s leisure and aquatic centres.

Firstly, I’d like to say I’m thrilled to have been elected as your representative on Melton City Council. I’m really looking forward to being the voice for our community, particularly for those of us who live on the land. A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of chatting to residents at a Meet the Mayor and your Ward Councillor event in Eynesbury. It’s really important to let your Councillor know what’s going on in your community, so I encourage you all to go to one of the remaining Meet the Mayor events and talk to us. Remember, we’re here for you. Those of you who know me know how passionate I am about being a rural landholder, and that initiatives that preserve our rural landscape are really important to me and many of our residents. For me, one of Council’s most important initiatives is Clean Up Australia Day, which encourages everyone to take care of their local environment and keep it beautiful for generations to come. So, please mark Sunday 3 March in your calendar, and make sure you take part in this year’s Clean Up Australia Day activities.

The Melton Library is temporarily located at Victoria University Campus, corner of Rees and Wilson roads, Melton South while the construction of the Melton Library and Learning Hub takes place. Caroline Springs Library is located at 193-201 Caroline Springs Boulevard (corner of Lake Street), Caroline Springs. The sessions are free and no bookings are required. For more information residents can contact the library on 9747 5300.

Cambridge Ward It’s hard to believe that it’s been four months since last year’s elections and that March is here already. Time certainly has flown.

Sessions are held in Caroline Springs on Mondays and Thursdays at 10.30am, Saturday at 11am and at Melton Library on Wednesdays and Fridays at 11am.

Six thousand randomly selected homes across the municipality will receive the survey in the mail the week commencing 4 March. Residents are also encouraged to complete the survey online http://www.melton.vic.gov.au/Council/Have_your_say The survey is now online and will close on 18 March 2013. Everyone who completes the survey can sign up for a free 7 day Melton Waves pass. By completing the survey you also go in the running to win a six month Melton Waves full membership or one of two $100 Coles / Myer gift cards.

Pre-school story time sessions are a great way to introduce your child to the world of books

Chance to meet the Mayor The Mayor of the City of Melton, Cr Kathy Majdlik will be donning an apron and cooking up a storm as part of Meet the Mayor sessions to be held across the municipality over the next couple of months. Residents are invited to come along to a sausage sizzle and meet with the Mayor and Ward Councillors at the sessions. Meet the Mayor sessions will be held on the following dates: - Sunday 17 March, 12 – 2pm at Melton Civic Centre lawn, 232 High St, Melton (Community Hall in case of bad weather) - Sunday 24 March, 12 – 2pm at Caroline Springs Civic Centre lawn, Caroline Springs Boulevard (Civic Centre Library in case of bad weather) - Sunday 7 April, 12 - 2pm at Morton Homestead, Morton Boulevard, Taylors Hill Children’s entertainment will be provided.

Responses will enable Council to plan and develop facilities and infrastructure that meet the demand of residents into the future and inform the development of Council’s Recreation and Facilities Strategy due for completion later this year. For more information on the Active Participation Survey contact Council’s Recreation Planner on 9747 7200.

And finally, I just wanted to briefly mention that preparations for Council’s Heritage Week celebrations are well underway. Keep an eye out for our historic photo exhibitions and Heritage Awards in the upcoming weeks. Remember: if you don’t know where you’ve been, how can you know where you’re heading? Please feel free to contact me about on either 0408 794 232 or via email at: nola.dunn@melton.vic.gov.au

Easter sacrifice helps faith grow MELTON Catholic Regional College students will immerse themselves in Kenyan culture this Easter. Teacher Pauline Jakobovic, staff and seven senior students will travel to Embulbul in Kenya to work with the Brother Beausang Catholic Education Centre. College principal Mark Sheehan and four teachers visited Kenya last June to explore the possibility of an immersion program and to learn how the Melton college could contribute to the Brother Beausang school. As part of their visit, the team of Melton students will help African pupils and attend classes relevant to their study. Ms Jakobovic said students would lead sports sessions and visit homes with college pastoral care workers to get a deeper understanding of poverty and the culture, lifestyle and values of the Kenyan community.

‘‘Students will also participate in liturgical services. ‘‘As we are in Kenya over the Easter period, this should be an amazing experience contributing to their faith development,’’ Ms Jakobovic said. She said students were raising money to help with costs for the immersion experience. They hope to donate $6000 for a new playground at the primary school. ‘‘The playground area is unsafe and totally unsuitable for young children,’’ Ms Jakobovic said. COVERSTORY

A question of

balance

I

n the quaint quarters of a restored, handmade brick house that was once a butcher’s shop in Riddells Creek, a healing centre, The Heart Wheel, is about to open. Rosemary Fletcher will practise traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) alongside her business partner Caz Rieniets, who is a health and wellness coach as well as a counsellor, reflexologist, Reiki practitioner and Bowen therapist. As a maternal and child health nurse now practising TCM, Ms Fletcher says she has the best of both worlds. The Riddells Creek resident has been a TCM practitioner for more than six years and she’s most interested in children’s health. “I focus on keeping children well rather than fixing them when they are sick ... traditional Chinese medicine is about balancing the body, so that it is working in harmony with itself and not against itself.’’ TCM dates back at least 2000 years and promotes health through a focus on the connection of the mind, body and spirit. Practitioners believe the body has 12 qi or energy channels, each connected to an internal organ. A person’s qi circulates through their body in channels that can be redirected through stimulation of the acupuncture points via fine needles. Fletcher says that advances in acupuncture techniques, replacing needles with laser beams, have made the medicine more accessible. “The needle used for acupuncture is not like the hypodermic needle people think of when going to a doctor. The needles used are about the same thickness of a strand of

your hair. Most people feel the guide [the outer case that contains the needle] more than the needle itself.’’ She says that of the patients she sees, 80 per cent prefer laser acupuncture to needles. TCM practitioners focus on eight principles: hot and cold, deficiency and excess, yin and yang and interior and exterior known as ‘Ba Gang’. As an example, Ms Fletcher often sees young children who show symptoms of what orthodox medicine would most likely diagnose as hyperactivity or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). “Sugar adds heat to the body and children on high sugar diets are very irritable because of the increased heat in their bodies.’’ Fletcher says diet is vital to what happens internally, and to manifestations of imbalances. She says that in orthodox medicine, doctors would typically prescribe chemicals to address the imbalance whereas TCM looks at the deficiency/excess, yin/ yang, hot/cold balance. “Where there is a deficiency, you nourish it, and when there is an excess you drain it to help the body reach a balance again.” Ms Fletcher travelled to China in 2007 and was privy to a winter diseases preventative clinic. “It is really exciting because it is the first time the clinic has been run out of China and I’ve been lucky because it is very rare to be told the formulas.’’ She has gathered a small group to build the immune system for winter at the clinic at Macedon Ranges Osteopathy in Sunbury. “It involves topical applications of a Chinese herbal formula, which

includes ginseng, that helps to build the immune system.’’ Cherokee resident Isaac Golden, a world authority on homeopathic immunisation, agrees a wholistic approach to healthcare is the most effective. ‘‘Cuba has one of the best public health systems in the world and ... the wonderful thing is their doctors, some of whom are also trained in natural medicine, are able to treat a patient with whatever they feel is best, whether that be orthodox medication or acupuncture or homeopathy or naturopathy.”

Homeopathy comes from the Greek words homeo, meaning similar, and pathy, meaning suffering, and is based on the law of similars – that a substance that is capable of causing a group of symptoms in a healthy person is capable of removing a group of similar symptoms in a sick person. Golden has been teaching homeopathy for 25 years and is founder and director of the Australasian College of Hahnemannian Homoeopathy. According to the World Health Organisation Atlas of Traditional, Complementary and Alternative Medicine in 2005, homeopathy was the most popular natural treatment in high-income countries and second in low-income countries, followed closely by acupuncture. Golden has done the world’s largest longterm study of the effects of homeopathic immunisation, from 1986 to 2004. “As part of my doctoral studies I examined the long-term health of children who used vaccination and homeopathic immunisation (HI) as well as those who

used constitutional methods to improve health and those who did nothing at all to prevent infectious diseases. “The homeopathic-immunised group was the healthiest measured by long-term incidence of five conditions suggesting that it is not only non-toxic but energetically safe. The most important single issue is evidence of effectiveness. We know HI is not toxic, so the question is do they work?” Golden points to “huge amounts of orthodox data supporting the effectiveness of HI”. He estimates more than 2000 people use his homeopathic immunisation, one of which aims to prevent whooping cough. With HI, nosodes are used. A nosode is a homeopathic preparations of diseased tissue, i.e a remedy prepared from the saliva of a number of patients with whopping cough, taken orally. “The debate on preventing diseases is not an option of either vaccinating or doing nothing. I totally agree that there are some diseases that you should immunise against and I work to make the option of homeopathic immunisations available to those who want it, and support the method with research evidence showing safety and effectiveness.’’

When Caroline Springs naturopath and nutritionist Merril Bowater and her husband wanted to start a family, her mother-in-law gave her a book on preconception care. “It was all about preconception care to get yourself ready and how to make a healthy baby.” She says the book got her thinking about nutrition and the diet aspects that are sometimes overlooked. “My husband and I were never unhealthy but it was all about becoming aware of nutrition.” She started studying naturopathy: the

practice of nutritional medicine, herbal medicine, lifestyle and dietary advice treating both acute and chronic conditions and specialising in prevention. Bowater says a really good picture can be given after looking at someone’s past illnesses, family history, stress, sleep habits, immunity, digestion and bowel habits. “I grew up with a mum who was really passionate about good food, fresh air, exercise and balancing lifestyle and work, and when you raise a child you think about all those things.’’ Bowater says she has seen a shift in people’s attitudes towards natural medicine since she started in the industry more than six years ago. “Instead of people finding us as a last resort, more and more people are choosing us as a first option ... there used to be a perception perhaps associated with hippies but I think that is changing. “With the internet, people are more informed and people often present already having some idea of what might be wrong with them.’’ She says it’s an exciting time for the industry because many secondary school graduates are wanting to study natural medicine as a first choice. “People used to come into naturopathy as a third or fourth career choice ... my niece has chosen to study naturopathy, which is great. “It is very much a thinking person’s medicine because people have to do a lot of work themselves and certain people are attracted to that and want to learn,’’ she says. “There is a time and place for medication as well, we are taught to be complementary and work with GPs as much as possible.’’ But Bowater says that sometimes western medicine does not treat a person’s complaint. “Sometimes with western medicine, if you can’t match a group of symptoms to a disease then there is no treatment and the doctors have done all the tests they can do but the patient knows something is still wrong. We fill that void for a lot of people.” Bowater says she sees many people struggling with weight gain. “I see a lot of changes happening very quickly and it makes my job rewarding ... it is teaching people to be mindful.’’ She spoke about one woman who was given nutrients, changed her diet and started working with a personal trainer. “In this case and many others, it is about getting their energy levels up and their motivation, because once they get a little bit of momentum, it just snowballs.’’

Long live semillon Our wine buff Ben Thomas gets serious about an underrated drop

pened a bottle of semillon lately? If the answer is yes, you’re in the minority. In wine circles, semillon is spoken about in revered, hushed tones, but its steely, often puckering, acidity makes it a hard sell to many wine drinkers. Semillon is revered for its longevity and the honey and toast notes that start to develop after a few years in the bottle. But, as most of the wine we drink is bought on the day we consume it, it’s understandable why it’s not on the radar of many casual drinkers. Semillon winemakers know this and they’re doing something about it. A handful of premuim Hunter Valley winemakers are having great success by adding an off-dry semillon to their range of wines, where residual sugar delivers sweetness to balance out the zippy acid. Matt Burton, of Gundog Estate in the Hunter Valley, says his off-dry Wild Semillon is now his most popular wine. “You’ve got all the producers in the area pretty well making the same style of wine, which does really well in

O

wine shows and with wine critics and good restaurants, but it is a really hard sell in a general sense for the public. “I sympathise with the general public who don’t really understand semillon as a young wine. It is a very challenging style and I think to be realistic we need to keep experimenting with off- and just-off-dry styles to broaden that market.” Burton made his first off-dry semillon in 2008 and his Wild Semillon is made using wild yeasts and fermenting a portion of the juice on its skins, just like a red wine, to build texture and depth of flavour. “Of all our wines, the Wild Semillon is our biggest seller. The off-dry semillon means I don’t have to make a moscato or a verdelho (wines that are popular at Hunter cellar doors), which I’m not very interested in,” Burton says. “Occasionally in cellar door you get someone pull a face because of the high acid and fruitdriven intensity [of semillon], which is unlike the sav blanc or verdelho they’re used to

Temporary carers needed!

drinking. That’s when you show them an offdry semillon and all of a sudden the semillon experience changes for them. “It’s not classical by any stretch in terms of Hunter Valley semillon, but you might get a 20-year-old onto that now and in five years’ time they’re buying Tyrrell’s Vat 1.” If you have the patience, plus somewhere to keep wine cool as it ages for several years, Australian semillon is one of the great wine bargains. If you don’t, several producers, such as Meerea Park in the Hunter Valley and the Barossa’s Peter Lehmann Wines, take the effort out of our hands and release them as five- or six-year-old wines. This ageing time adds to the costs, which are passed on to the consumer and often take a $25 wine to somewhere about $40. It’s fair enough, and in many cases, the wines still prove to be bargains. ■ To read more reviews, visit theweeklyreview.com.au/wine.

Love a bargain? ★★★★ De Iuliis Semillon 2012 (Hunter Valley) $18; 11.5% Aromas of peach, lemon, pea shoots and herbs, in particular thyme. There’s more of the zesty lemon characters driving the intense, mineral-laced acid. It’s crisp, dry and lightly textural but, most of all, refreshing, minerally and steely. It’s approachable and nice drinking now, but its best years are ahead of it. It’s hard to argue with the price so buy half a dozen, try one now and leave the rest for a few years. Unlock the potential The right styling could make this property cute as a button, writes Carole Levy he leafy, unsealed track leading to this property immediately announces its seclusion and matches the riotous nature of the gardens that surround the three-bedroom house on about 0.4 hectares. Every inch of the land is densely planted with a mix of exotics, fruit trees, shrubs and ground covers — clearly a gardener’s labour of love that eschews any adherence to landscaping ‘‘laws’’. A paddock next to the house, also a jungle of plants, highlights the development potential of the property, subject to council approval. But should someone be looking for the simple

T

life, with chook pen, glasshouse, and leafy nooks in which to retreat, this could be the one. The house is pretty basic but perfectly habitable; with the right styling, it could be as cute as a button. Entry is beneath an open pergola to a carpeted hallway. A glass sliding door at the right opens to a lounge room with corner windows framing the lush greenery. The nearby kitchen has a walk-in pantry, gas cooker and a big, wide window behind the sink revealing pretty views of the back garden. A good-sized lobby at the back door houses

the laundry, with a bathroom next door. Each bedroom has built-in wardrobes. A brick-paved area in the backyard, a couple of steps down from the deck, is nearly enclosed by the leafiness of ornamentals, ground covers and a peach tree. Bougainvillea spills over a support, splashing its colour amid the greenery and, down a meandering walkway, there’s a small pond. There’s also an irrigation system. If an almost hippie vibe appeals, or if land for development is where it’s all at, this property could be just the ticket.

It has four spacious bedrooms, the main with an en suite and a corner spa. There’s also a study, billiard room and a family-meals area with polished floorboards. In the open-plan kitchen are a 900mm stainlesssteel oven, stone benchtops and dishwasher. TRIPPING

Walking the gauntlet Crossing the road in Saigon provides an adrenaline rush that puts some adventure sports to shame, writes David Bonnici espite doing everything the guide books told me not to do, which meant I caught a shonky taxi and paid well over par, the drive into town from Tan Son Nat International Airport was a wonderful introduction to Ho Chi Minh City. The trip into Vietnam’s largest city, otherwise known as Saigon, had me sticking my head out the window in wide-eyed wonderment. Being part of the city’s notoriously congested arterials made this routine trip an adventure in itself. The traffic here somehow manages to flow despite the tide of motorbikes and scooters, which weave around each other and scatter from the path of unyielding larger vehicles. Bikes often negotiate the wider boulevards 10 abreast in each direc-

D

tion and criss-cross in similar breadth at uncontrolled intersections like an endless, meticulously choreographed motorcycle stunt show. Adding to the spectacle are scooters carrying whole families or loads that would have trouble fitting in the back of a Ford Falcon. Despite the mayhem, everything flows because everyone is aware of what is in front and around them. Crossing this madness is an excellent demonstration of their attentiveness. Pedestrian crossings are the safest places to cross. This might sound obvious until you realise nothing stops at pedestrian crossings unless they’re at controlled intersections — they are simply there to alert motorists to the fact that someone may attempt to enter the fray on foot. This means, as a pedestrian, all you

can do is hope everyone goes around you, though this doesn’t seem to apply to any vehicle with four wheels. First rule of crossing busy Saigon thoroughfares: don’t cross in front of anything bigger than a motorbike! Second rule of crossing busy Saigon thoroughfares: walk in a slow, but steady pace and for goodness’ sake don’t stop or make any rash moves! Simply look at the traffic and walk; don’t worry, they’re looking for you, anticipating your moves and aiming for the spot you’re about to vacate. My first attempt at playing human Frogger was across Ton Duc, a wide, busy boulevard beside Saigon River. It’s a rush to walk into moving traffic, to be enveloped by the roaring, beeping mechanical herd and emerge on the other side of the road unscathed.

Honda adds 2WD to CR-V range Derek Ogden and Ewan Kennedy road test the new-generation SUV onda CR-V, the fourth generation of the compact sport utility vehicle that 17 years ago helped define the soft-roader segment, now comes in two-wheel or four-wheel-drive variants. Prices start with the base model 2WD sixspeed manual VTi at just over $27,000, while the top 4WD VTi-L five-speed automatic rounds out the range at $42,000-plus. Previously we considered the Honda CR-V was overpriced for a plain ‘meat and three veg’ taste of compact SUV living. Thanks as much as anything to a crowded market, that is a thing of the past, with the latest CR-Vs dishing up tasty features at competitive prices. Over the space of 10 days we experienced a broad span of CR-V models, spending time with the entry-level 2WD in five-speed automatic guise and the top-dog 4WD VTI-L five-speed auto with steering wheel-mounted paddle shift. The designers and engineers have worked hard on Honda’s theme of ‘bigger on the inside, smaller on the outside’. At 22mm shorter and

H

30mm lower than its predecessor, the flat front makes a bold statement with its three-slat radiator grille and big Honda ‘H’. A sedan-style profile is augmented by large wheel arches spanning 17- or 18-inch wheels Inside, the cabin is designed to give a feeling of openness. With the two front seats further apart than before, there is more shoulder room. Occupants are further spoilt by a new level of cabin quietness thanks to engine and road noise being kept at bay by improved sound insulation. Noise from neither engine on offer – the 2.0-litre or 2.4-litre i-VTEC – is intrusive. Efficiency is the name of the game here with combined urban/highway fuel consumption put at 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres and 8.7 litres per 100 kilometres respectively. Ride and handling are up there with the best in class, both with comfort and stability that are almost sedan-style. The new CR-V, even in base model 2WD manual form, is accessory rich. Satellite navigation and DVD are factory fitted options.

Bold bid: The new Honda CR-V comes with more radical styling than its predecessors.

Acid test as Phoenix embarks on first stage of five-year plan BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON Phoenix will open the season with a stern test when it travels to Churchill Reserve to take on St Albans Saints in the FFV State Knockout Cup on Saturday. While the club is aiming high for the league season, starting on April 6, new coach Theo Karapanagiotidis is under no illusions about the challenge his team faces this weekend. Melton has started a new five-year plan to coincide with this year’s state league division restructure, hoping to make it from state league 5 west to state league 2 within five years. St Albans, in the Victorian Premier League as recently as 2011, is preparing itself for a state league 1 campaign this season. Karapanagiotidis succeeds Danny Gnjidic,

who took the job at Moreland Zebras for this season. A former playing coach at South Caulfield, Karapanagiotidis coached the reserves last season. ‘‘To say it’s a bit of a horror draw is an understatement,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a good opportunity for my players. ‘‘I’ve got a young list. It’s a good opportunity to be put on the stage to see how far we’ve come.’’ Melton’s two pre-season fixtures against teams in higher leagues have so far gone well, drawing 0-0 against Old Carey and 1-1 against Ballarat Red Devils. ‘‘It’s going to take one thing and that’s hard work, hard hard work. ‘‘We’re not going to St Albans with a 4-3-3

because if they play a full squad they’ll cut us open. We’ll put men behind the ball and try to catch them on the break.’’ With a month between the cup opener and Melton’s league opener there will be no risks at the selection table. ‘‘The bigger picture is the league. It’s a big ask, but it’s essential we get promoted. I wouldn’t want to be coaching anyone else. I’m happy with our squad.’’ Phoenix president Steve Fuller said a re-turfed pitch at MacPherson Park was looking good and a project for new changerooms on the practise fields was on course to start mid-year. Melton will play further pre-season matches after this weekend’s cup tie, including the Joey Turnaturi memorial match where a number of grades will play Sunbury. The date for this is still to be set.

Last ball lucky for Highlanders BY TIM O’CONNOR CENTRAL Highlands won the under-18 boys state cricket championship in a two-run thriller against South East Bayside Breakers at the MCG on Sunday. The win clinches the first boys’ state championship for the Central Highlands region since the merger of the country and metro areas in 2000-01 and follows a defeat in the decider two years ago. A half-century from skipper Patrick McKenna (58) was important in the Highlanders posting a competitive total of 7-203 batting first. McKenna, this season’s Victorian under-17 captain, followed some good work by Australian under-19 squad member Matt Short, who made 38 at the top of the order. The pair stood out in a batting card full of contributors, with seven batsmen reaching double figures. The Central Highlands had the Breakers on the back foot early in their run chase. But a rebuilding 115-run partnership between Jack O’Toole (70) and Peter Cassidy (50) got the Breakers back in the contest. Needing 11 to win from the final over, the Breakers would have fancied their chances, with the powerplay allowing just three fielders outside the inner circle. But the left-arm off-spin of Josh Tong proved too difficult to get away for the chasing side, which could manage only 201, with a run out on the last ball of the innings. — Ballarat Courier Read the full story at meltonweekly.com.au

Phillips, from Clayton, defeated World No.2 Karen Murphy 9-5, 8-9, 4-2 to win the women’s singles. Both singles winners received $18,000 in prizemoney. Dylan Fisher and Russell Green in the final, 2-8, 7-5, 3-0. Kelsey Cottrell and Lynsey Armitage triumphed in an allQueensland final of the women’s pairs, beating Carol Williams and Jane Bush 11-8, 12-2. NSW South Coast trio Tony Crammond, Peter Bobridge and David Cadlwell claimed the men’s

triples, winning 6-9, 11-2, 7-0 against NSW trio Michael O’Loughlin, Neil Burkett and Zeljko Trbara. Phillips, Sam Shanahan and Claire Turley denied Nicole Shortis (Bundoora RSL), Jane McMenaman and Kristy Poile (both Fitzroy Victoria), the women’s triples final, 7-4, 8-8.

BACCHUS Marsh might have won the race for the minor premiership, but Woodend will be going direct to the grand final after a 13-shot semi-final win at Trentham on Saturday. The Central Highlands Bowling Division’s top prize will be contested by Woodend and the winner of this weekend’s preliminary final between Bacchus Marsh and Kyneton Golf, who eliminated Trentham by 23 shots in the other semi-final. Andy Lefevre (up nine) and Troy Williams (up nine) were big rink winners for Woodend in the 96-83 win against the minor premier. John Fordham was the Marsh’s only rink winner. In division 2, Romsey is through to the grand final after beating Woodend 107-66, with Woodend to play Mt Cottrell in the preliminary final after its 128-66 win against Diggers Rest. Kyneton booked its place in the division 3 grand final by beating Trentham 72-66, with Macedon eliminating Woodend 80-73. In division 4, Gisborne Yellow is through to the grand final after beating Kyneton Red 61-25, while Woodend eliminated Kyneton Blue 58-24.

Finals road a stiff climb for stumbling Woodend BY TEO PELLIZZERI A TOP-order collapse has Woodend in danger of failing to take care of its end of the equation to make the McIntyre Cup finals of Gisborne District Cricket Association. Woodend (fifth, 42 points) started the final round with a better percentage than Wallan, Riddell and Sunbury (second to fifth, 48) but still needing to win and hope one of the other three slips up. Bowling out Romsey for 110 was a good start, but collapsing to 4-37 in the final 21 overs before stumps has Woodend an underdog heading into this weekend’s second day. Wallan has finals destiny in its control after bowling out Bacchus

Win not enough for Centrals

Country challenge: GDCA’s Cam Clayton bowls against eventual champion Mornington Peninsula. Picture: Darren Howe

GDCA finishes fifth BY TEO PELLIZZERI IT started with a win, but then success dried up at Melbourne Country Week for Gisborne District Cricket Association in a fifth-placed finish. Mornington Peninsula and Goulburn Murray were the runaway top two in Country Week division 3 as one-win, three-loss GDCA finished 40 points off a spot in the final. GDCA shared the workload in its Monday win, beating Wangaratta 274 to 8-213. Mark Ryan top-scored with 61 and Ian Spiteri made 54. Andrew Powell (43) and Warren Else (42) were the other contributors. Cam Clayton (2-20) and Mitchell Hannan (3-8) then skittled the Wangaratta top order to have the chase 5-18 in reply. In game two, GDCA posted 182 batting first against Sunraysia, with Powell’s 51 the only score over 30. Anthony Hibbert took 4-52 with the ball but couldn’t prevent

Sunraysia reaching 7-219 in reply. Game three was another batting struggle, with Warren Hall (47) and Warren Else (41) saving GDCA from 5-50 with a 55-run stand. But 138 was not enough to challenge Mornington Peninsula, which passed the target three wickets down thanks to 103 from Dylan O’Malley. Peninsula made 223, then GDCA was 4-41 when time was called. Game four again had GDCA relying heavily on Else to post a score, with his 61 holding together the innings of 9-147 against Goulburn Murray. Darcy Nolan (3-57) and Aaron McLean (3-28) were among the wickets, but Goulburn Murray reached 7-155 off 30 overs in reply. Mornington Peninsula (121) beat Goulburn Murray (97) by 24 runs in the final. Else led GDCA run-scoring for the week with 171 at 42.75, while Anthony Hibbert claimed 6-71 as the highest wicket-taker.

MELTON Central dominated against Grand United but couldn’t get the result it needed elsewhere as it missed the finals of B1 Turf. Williamstown Congs beat Bellbridge by five runs to hold on to fourth spot in the second tier of Williamstown District Cricket Association. St Johns beat Williamstown Imperials by 56 runs in a result that sent both to the finals. Melton Central (fifth, 43) missed out behind Williamstown Congs (fourth, 45) and St Johns (third, 47). Centrals won emphatically in their final game, making 1-140 in 23 overs to chase down Grand United’s 9-131 made in 40 overs. Scott Lumley was best of the bowlers with 3-24. In A1 Turf, Melton South finished seventh of eight in the division after losing by eight wickets to Williamstown Imperials. South made 156 before the Imperials reached 2-161 with 27 balls to spare in reply. In WSUCCA, Eynesbury Green could not beat Eynesbury Black by enough runs to overtake Charles Sturt University for top spot in the one-day grade. The Black Eagles made 5-195 batting first, with Stuart Peters topscoring with 70. But a century from Justin Sidlecki led the Green Eagles to a six-wicket win, his 122no getting the chase home: 4-203 off 28 overs.

Marsh for 164 and reaching 1-35 at stumps in reply. Sunbury is well placed against Rupertswood after posting 231 batting first. Rupertswood’s Sam Hogan took 5-55 as best of the bowlers. Riddell will have to produce with the ball, though, after posting 208 against ladder leader Sunbury United. Cameron Moran (46) and Heath Wadden (70) arrested a 4-35 start, albeit with both out by Wadden’s dismissal at 8-157. Michael Sammut (24) and Brenton Stancombe (28) put on 50 for the ninth wicket, getting Riddell to 208 in the 74th over. Sunbury United negotiated three overs before stumps without losing a

wicket and will resume at 0-15 this weekend. In B grade, Gisborne’s Steven Docherty (93no) and Brook Grumont (86) combined for a 107-run stand on the way to posting 5-306 against Wallan. St Anthonys made 325 batting first against Riddell, while Macedon’s Trevor Shipp claimed 6-30 as Sunbury was all-out 129. Macedon reached 2-55 at stumps in reply. In C grade, Woodend posted 259 against Diggers Rest Bulla Village with Daniel Eastley’s 82 the top score. Shannon O’Keefe’s 3-45 was best of the Burras’ bowlers. East Sunbury will defend 228 against Sunbury United, while Ashfield is already 1-82 chasing Rupertswood’s 118.

Melton rolls Brighton MELTON reinforced its standing as ladder leader in Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association south-west first XI with a 189-run thrashing of Brighton at the weekend. Melton rolled Brighton for 106 in reply to 295 made the previous weekend before batting out the day making 3-78. The big win keeps Melton top of the league with 57 points and 1.93 per cent from Werribee (57, 1.84) and Caulfield third (51, 1.54) with a round to play. James Wheelahan (2-6) removed Brighton’s openers at 2-9 before Brad Jones and Shane Harwood kept the pressure on, reducing the chase to 5-37. Nathan Allen cleaned up the middle and lower order to finish with innings-best figures of 4-50.

Melton will finish the home-andaway season with a one-dayer at Malvern (ninth, 33 points) this weekend. In south-west second XI, Brighton claimed top spot at Melton’s expense with a 229-run win. Chasing Brighton’s 6-388, made the previous weekend, Melton was all out for 159 with Tristan Francis’ 41 the top score. In north-west third XI, Melton thrashed Coburg by an innings and 123 runs. Melton declared with 6-270 on the board in reply to Coburg’s 84, before bowling out Coburg for 63 in its second dig. In north-west fourth XI, Melton held on to avoid outright defeat by making 7-182 in its second innings after being bowled out for 124 in reply to Coburg’s 8-371.

Lions strengthen their chances DARLEY has already taken firstinnings points of its final-round first grade match against Coronet City and may yet gatecrash the top two in Ballarat Cricket Association. The Lions rolled Coronet City for just 62 in 42.3 overs after sending the visitors in at Darley Park. Darley was 4-112 in reply, a lead of 50 heading into day two. Darley (fourth, 40 points) can still jump Mt Clear (third, 43) and Napoleons-Sebastopol (second, 46)

should the latter two slip up next weekend. Wickets were shared by Darley bowlers on Saturday, with Brian Wheelahan claiming 3-4. In division 1, Ballan may have started the round fourth but is sending a message before finals after outplaying ladder leader Creswick Imperials. Ballan made 222 batting first with Noel Heafield (48) top-scoring, before reducing Creswick Imperials to 4-33 at stumps.
