the government. “This project will significantly enhance the local community and increase capacity to cater for existing and future growth area residents,” Planning Minister Matthew Guy said. “The new intersection will also benefit users of the adjacent

Tabcorp Park harness racing and entertainment facility.” Melton Residents Association president Peter Rowan said it was a good outcome for the community. He said the improvements were much needed, especially with

traffic in the area to increase further with the addition of new developments in Toolern. Toolern resident Brad MacPherson, who launched a community petition calling for the improvements, said the upgrade would boost safety. ‘‘At those peak times, it has been dangerous with cars backing on to the freeway . . . you are lining up because people are performing illegal U-turns,’’ he said. ‘‘My campaign and the residents association campaign put a bit of pressure on council to get the state funding.’’ Melton Labor MP Don Nardella said the funding was ‘‘long overdue but welcome’’. The council is working with VicRoads on the design stage of the project.

TRAFFIC lights will be installed at one of Melton’s busiest intersections in a bid to ease congestion caused by the city’s rapid population growth. Residents welcomed last week’s allocation of $1.5 million for the project, which came only days after the intersection was nominated in an RACV survey as one of Victoria’s top 10 most frustrating traffic trouble spots. Melton Council, police, residents groups and the city’s MPs have been pushing for signals at the intersection over many years. The Ferris Road works were among a $7 million package of key Growth Area Infrastructure Contribution projects across Melbourne to be fast-tracked by

INBRIEF Diggers Rest man to stand trial A Diggers Rest man, accused of hitting and killing a man after an alleged roadside argument in Marong, will stand trial in the Supreme Court on February 11. Daniel Carletti was first charged with culpable driving and failing to stop after an accident on New Year’s Day last year. The charge has now been upgraded to manslaughter. The crash critically injured a 41-year-old Sunbury man, who later died. Carletti will stand trial in the Supreme Court on February 11.

New car impounded A Caroline Springs man had his new Toyota sports car impounded after being caught travelling almost 80km/h above the speed limit. Police said the man, 49, was doing 178km/h in a 100 zone on Plumpton Road on September 15. He will be charged on summons. Almost 90 cars have been impounded in Melton this year.

A GROUP of tenants have nowhere to live after an emergency order was issued for the Melton West house which they were sharing. At age 30, Clayton Smith said he was being faced to leave the only ‘‘family’’ he had ever known. After a lifetime of government care, he said he’d found some peace with his fellow housemates. He and seven other tenants are frantically looking for somewhere to live, after being told they must leave the unregistered boarding house by the end of this week.

the house, but the situation for the tenants was undesirable. ‘‘Council needs to be reminded of the memorandum of understanding and model partnership protocol for the closure of private rooming houses. It dictates that council should consider the impact of leaving residents homeless by shutting down the rooming houses.’’ Mr Nguyen said rogue landlords were a major problem in the western suburbs and the ultimate victims were the tenants. Melton’s family, youth and housing manager Matthew Wilson said the council was working with the residents involved. According to council, there are no rooming houses registered in the municipality.

An emergency order was issued by Melton Council on August 29 after a surveyor found the building was unfit for habitation. There were also concerns about illegal works and a change of use from a single residential dwelling to a boarding house. The tenants said they were only notified last week, giving them less than a week to vacate. Mr Smith said there was no formal lease agreement. The Weekly tried to contact the landlord, but they did not return calls. ‘Healing’ minister may put faith in VCAT BY ANDRIA COZZA A MELTON minister has slammed the council for a lack of vision after it rejected an application for a healing sanctuary in Kurunjang. Applicant Reverend Gordon McKenzie said he had not ruled out appealing the decision to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The controversial proposal for a worship centre hosting spiritual workshops, healings, clairvoyant readings, music lessons and a library received 96 objections.

In July, the Weekly reported that residents claimed the Heaven’s Gate Healing Sanctuary would be an overdevelopment of the Buckle Road site. But Mr McKenzie said he was bewildered by the council’s refusal of the application. ‘‘You try to do something good for the community and it gets knocked back,’’ he said. ‘‘It shows a lack of vision by the council and ignorance on behalf of the objectors.’’ The council said the proposal was inconsistent with the residential zone and would set

an ‘‘undesirable precedent’’ for future applications. Mr McKenzie said objectors did not understand the proposal. ‘‘There has been a gross exaggeration as to the effect it would have had on the area.’’ He said most of the activities planned for the sanctuary already took place at his property and during Sunday meetings in Palmerston Street, Melton. Some would simply be relocated to the Kurunjang property. Melbourne Water and the council’s environmental health and environmental services depart-

ment did not object to the proposal, but they said the proposed development could still have an adverse affect on nearby waterways via stormwater run-off and wastewater. Council’s report said the number of objections should not be seen as the overriding factor in determining the application. ‘‘The critical consistent theme throughout most of the objections was that residents had bought into and reside in the area for its low-density setting, and the proposal has the potential to detract from the character.’’

Year 9 Caroline Springs College student Desi shared the story of his life with Doris Galea at Taylors Hill’s historic Morton Homestead last week. Melton Council’s planned activity group, which provides activities for frail, aged people and people with a disability, organised the storytelling exercise. Principal Patrick Waring said Morton residents had visited the school earlier this month to share their life experiences. ‘‘This week students returned the favour, making a life story poster about where they have come from and what they want out of life,’’ Mr Waring said. ‘‘It’s a great program because the learning curve is on both sides . . . they learn from the elderly, but the residents can learn from them, too.’’

A MELTON family are heartbroken after their cat was mauled by two dogs in Melton West. Brenda May said she was not home when the attack happened last Wednesday. ‘‘My neighbours tried to get the dogs off the cat but failed. Our cat was a red point Siamese and was placid and much loved in our family.’’ Ms May said neighbours called a Melton Council ranger because the attack happened about the time children would return home from school. She said she was devastated to hear claims the dogs were returned to their owners, who she doesn’t believe were told of the attack. ‘‘It’s bad enough that it happened, but I shouldn’t have to tell the ranger to call the owners of the dog to let them know they killed my cat,’’ she said. ‘‘They should be responsible for what their animals have done. My children were crying their eyes out.’’ Melton compliance manager Ian Stewart said the council was investigating the attack. He said the owners of the dogs had not been identified. ‘‘Council asks that any witnesses of the attack contact the council’s compliance unit.’’ Council said two dogs were impounded in the area on the same day and released to their owner the next day. ‘‘At this time no direct evidence to link these dogs to the attack has been established,’’ a spokeswoman said. — Andria Cozza

Big tick and a hug for council BY ANDRIA COZZA MELTON Council is among the least-complained about municipalities in the state, a new report has revealed. According to the Victorian Ombudsman’s annual report, which was tabled in State Parliament earlier this month, Melton was the fourth least-complained about of the 79 councils. Melton’s complaint rate was 0.32 per 1000 residents. The state median was 0.62 per 1000 residents. The most common complaints related to delays with, or a failure to receive, a response and planning issues. Other problem areas included parking, inadequate remedies and council facilities. In a separate satisfaction survey conducted by JWS Research, the

council recorded an overall performance index of 64. A council spokesman said this was significantly higher than the statewide average of 60. ‘‘This year’s results cannot be compared to previous results because new methods have been used for the survey and reporting, which means comparisons are invalid,’’ the spokesman said. Melton scored higher on community consultation, advocacy, customer service and overall council direction than outer Melbourne and Victorian councils.

Battlers targeted in housing plan

BY MELISSA CUNNINGHAM A ROCKBANK family is seeking to develop a parcel of land into community housing for the north-west’s most vulnerable families. But Melton Council said such a development was unlikely, with a recently approved corridor plan indicating there were environmental constraints that meant the area was more suited to a regional park. The ambitious plan is the vision of Mario Cachia, whose family owns a 25-hectare block within the western growth corridor on Neale Road, Caroline Springs. Mr Cachia said he wanted to have 12.5 hectares rezoned for residential use and sell half of it to raise money for a community housing development. Plans drawn up for Mr Cachia include more than 100 one- to three-bedroom townhouses. ‘‘This isn’t a money-making scheme; it’s a humanity issue,’’ he said. ‘‘There are families out here who can’t afford the cost of living. We want to target families who are just below the average rent threshold and charge them cheaper rent or [target] those who can’t afford to purchase a house . . . we want to sell it to them cheaper.’’ Mr Cachia said if the plan was approved he

BMScreens+Blinds 100% QUALITY & SERVICE would sell houses at $60,000-$100,000 less than their market value. He also plans to charge renters at least $100 less a week. Building and maintenance work would be carried out by him, family members and other residents employed by him. ‘‘I want to create jobs for local tradesmen through the project, too, by cutting out the middleman.’’ Mr Cachia said he had submitted a draft plan to the council earlier this month.

Melton’s planning services manager Bob Baggio said there were significant limitations as to how the property could be developed because of its zoning. ‘‘In this context, it is unlikely that council or the state government would support any amendment to the current controls prior to approval of the required precinct structure plan.’’ Mr Wilson said the council had yet to receive a formal proposal.

End in sight for Metro waiting BY TARA MURRAY NEARLY 500 Metro train services a week are earmarked for the Sunbury line when new scheduling starts later this year. As reported by the Weekly on August 14, Metro trains will start running to and from Sunbury on November 18. Transport Minister Terry Mulder last week confirmed the start date and said the extension of the Sydenham line to Sunbury would deliver a much-needed boost in train services for Diggers Rest and Sunbury passengers. He said there would be 489 Metro services each week compared with 298 V/Line trains at present. Mr Mulder described the increase in services as a ‘‘fantastic result’’ for the town’s 34,000 residents. The introduction of Metro services

would help reduce crowding on the Bendigo line trains. Public Transport Victoria (PTV) is overhauling its bus timetables to improve connections with trains. However, commuters are still in the dark over V/Line plans. PTV spokeswoman Caitlyn Hammond said V/Line would release a new timetable to coincide with the Metro timetable changes. But V/Line spokesman James Kelly could not reveal any details. Sunbury resident and commuter Hector Bugeja is happy with the projected number of trains on the Sunbury line. ‘‘By the sound of it, the wait may have been worth it. We’ve been waiting for train numbers like this for a long time. There will be more trains running and less waiting at the station, but if we have to stop at every station, then we will be on the train longer.’’

Sell, sack and shut for Victoria Uni BY BENJAMIN MILLAR VICTORIA University is slashing almost 80 courses and more than 100 teaching jobs as part of sweeping changes detailed in a leaked state government cabinet document. The changes, linked with a $32 million state government funding cut, include selling off the Newport campus and closing the VenU training restaurant. TAFE teachers walked off the job on Thursday and about 2000 people joined a rally in Treasury Gardens in protest against funding cuts to the sector. The leaked VU transition plan details a shift away from vocational training towards higher education, scrapping advanced diplomas and nearly all certificate I and II courses. VU will cut events and tourism, boat building and animal studies, raise its fees for students and vocational training in schools programs, and pull out of trade training centres in Werribee and Melton. A further 64 teaching jobs will go on top of 50 slashed earlier this year — including 34 from VU College, which provides English programs to international students. About 140 administration jobs are also reportedly to go. Australian Education Union Victorian president Mary Bluett said the government must be

held accountable for the devastation it had caused at VU and other TAFEs. The leaked document emerged after the university released a structure plan to come into effect from January 1. Vice-chancellor Peter Dawkins said the university would be made up of eight colleges, seven offering a curriculum incorporating further education and TAFE, with the eighth focusing on trades. Opposition leader Daniel Andrews met with VU students and teaching staff last week to discuss concerns about the impact of the cuts. “These cuts could spell the end of education, and training might be on its last legs in the western suburbs,” he said. “Ted Baillieu isn’t just robbing TAFEs of funding; he is robbing our children of their future.” Federal Tertiary Education and Skills Minister Chris Evans said destroying the TAFE sector meant Victoria wouldn’t have the skilled workforce it needed for the jobs of tomorrow. Skills Minister Peter Hall said industrial action was unnecessary. “While any period of change causes some uncertainty, I am confident that Victoria’s training system is responding to the changes well and that we will have a stronger, more responsive and sustainable system in the future.”

GRANDFINALSPECIAL

Chasing the game: A slow start caught out Melton and playing coach Krista Woodroffe. Pictures: Shawn Smits.

No room: Melton’s Brooke Gleeson is matched pace for pace by Lake Wendouree’s Emma Burton.

Bully for Ballarat as Melton succumbs BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON’S advancement to the A grade netball grand final was, in itself, a feat. But being left chasing after scoring just two of the first 13 goals, most of the match was an uphill battle. The swift kill by Lake Wendouree was followed by its almost regulation collection of a fifth premiership in six years. At the final whistle there were none of the earsplitting screams or scenes of giddy elation that

follow many a netball grand final. And therein may well lie the motivation for Melton not just to return to a grand final but to overthrow the Ballarat bullies who have now held the premiership for 11 years. It would mean that much for a team from the eastern bloc to finally take back the cup. The Bloods were the last team to win it, in 2001. They were also the last team from the east to make the grand final, in 2008. But this year was not the droughtbreaker. ‘‘Nerves are always a factor, but we didn’t

expect to be here, really,’’ Melton coach Krista Woodroffe said. ‘‘It was more nerves of enjoyment, rather than stressing out. ‘‘Now the girls know they can get here and we’ve got the ability . . . to take it to the best like Lake Wendouree. ‘‘Now we’ve got the passion to come back and maybe turn the tables.’’ Woodroffe identified her team’s on-court deficiencies as poor passing decisions and an inability to deal with Lake Wendouree crowding the centre court.

The Melton coach said it was important that the trip to the grand final did not stand out as a one-off. ‘‘With a good bit of recruiting and work with the playing group you can get anywhere in this competition,’’ she said. ‘‘Teams like Lake Wendouree and East Point are beatable.’’

Blow-by-blow, how Lake Wendouree won the game — page 46.

PRONTO MIXED CONCRETE

Forlorn: The Bacchus Marsh bench can’t believe what happened after witnessing a late collapse in the C grade netball.

Sun sets on the east for another year BY TEO PELLIZZERI THE wait for football and netball premiership glory will have to go another year for the Melton and Moorabool region. While Ballarat Football League grand final day held a lot of promise, with four starters from the combined region, none could walk away a winner. It means a team from the Melton — Moorabool region has still not won on BFL grand final day since 2005. Perhaps the tone was set for the day in the earliest event, C grade netball. Bacchus Marsh was well supported, with a healthy band of travelling fans splitting loyalties between under-18.5 footy and the netball court at Eastern Oval. The bulk of the other netball grades were there in support, draping the fences with red, black and yellow banners. And it looked like the day was going to start perfectly as the Marsh held a steady four-goal lead with five minutes left in the match.

Then, seemingly from nowhere, things turned sour. Redan charged back to within a goal and Bacchus Marsh couldn’t find the net. For four agonising minutes and a string of misses under the ring, the game slipped away and the Cobras lost 27-28. News was filtering through that there hadn’t been a goal in the under-18.5s for a while . . . Bacchus Marsh was stuck on two goals at the last change with no chance of a comeback. Darley, even though it fought hard in the first quarter, was not able to match Redan in the reserves. And Melton’s A grade netball grand final was a steamrolling. The Bloods captured the attention of the Ballarat league by getting to the big day at least, upsetting the stranglehold on the top places by the Ballarat-based clubs. With only Sunbury from the eastern bloc crashing the Ballarat party, the wait will continue for Melton, Melton South, Darley and Bacchus Marsh to bring a premiership back to the Melton-Moorabool region.

Wipeout: Darley Reserves player Kane Stewart is sent to the turf.

BY MELISSA CUNNINGHAM A SINGLE decision changed the course of Anthony Bartl’s life. Now he’s resolved to do all he can to prevent others from becoming victims of road trauma. The Flemington resident was just six when he was struck by a car as he crossed a road without looking on his way home from school. Now a quadriplegic, Mr Bartl, 32, visited Taylors Lakes Secondary College last week to share a road safety message with year 11 students as part of a Fit to Drive program. Schools across the north-west are taking part in the new safety initiative, which aims to raise awareness of the consequences of risk-taking on the roads. Presentations are given by road trauma victims, firefighters and police officers. Students are also exposed to graphic footage and take part in peer group discussions. After he was hit, Mr Bartl’s parents employed a private investigator, who found that the car that hit the boy was

travelling 5km/h over the 60 speed limit. ‘‘If the driver had stuck to the speed limit I would have only received some bruising to my legs and arms,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s been a hell of a ride. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else. Sometimes it’s been hard to stay positive, but I want people to know life does go on after a severe disability; you can still reach your dreams.’’ Mr Bartl completed a journalism degree at La Trobe University and is a qualified primary school teacher. In 2010, he won $50,000 on TV game show Hot Seat, which he used to travel around Australia. According to Transport Accident Commission figures, 20 people under 25 have died on Brimbank and Melton roads in the past five years, the highest number of deaths in any age group. Keilor Downs’s Leading Senior Constable Gerard Dickinson told students about an accident in which a young woman lost both her legs and watched her fiance die in her arms. ‘‘She watched her fiance’s funeral on Skype in a hospital bed,’’ he said. ‘‘She

did nothing wrong; another driver failed to give way. But if you put alcohol, drugs and speed into the mix you can imagine how devastating road accidents can be.’’ Senior Constable Dickinson says, on average, one Victorian becomes a paraplegic as a result of a road accident every 17 days. ‘‘Young people have a mentality that after an accident they will either be OK or they will die,’’ he said. ‘‘Death is final, there is no pain . . . but what they don’t realise if that there are 20,000 injured in car accidents every year, those victims don’t walk away OK – their lives are changed irreparably.’’ He said the five main causes of road trauma in youth were speed, drinkdriving, drug-affected driving, hooning and texting while driving. Year 11 student Tom Hortle said all western suburbs students should take part in the program. ‘‘It was really effective. It didn’t hide from the facts and Anthony was inspirational.’’

Where the imagination takes over A quirky flight of fancy falters in the hands of an inexperienced writer. IRECTORIAL duo Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, who delivered 2006’s runaway hit Little Miss Sunshine, return with the quirk factor amped up for their sophomore effort, Ruby Sparks. Paul Dano (pictured with Zoe Kazan), the grumpy teen brother in Little Miss Sunshine, plays introverted and neurotic author Calvin. He’s living off the proceeds of his successful debut novel, an instant American classic, but has suffered writer’s block ever since. Mooching around the house, leaving only for short strolls with his new pooch and to hit the gym with buff brother Harry (played with charm by Chris Messina), Calvin prefers staring absently at his dormant typewriter to forming real-world friendships. Then one enchanted night he dreams of a kooky vision in red hair, with a fun persona that’s a little too good to be true. Until, that is, he wills her into existence after being encouraged to write about her by his psychologist (Elliott Gould). First-time scribe Zoe Kazan, who also plays

D

RUBY SPARKS (M) Where: On general release When: From September 19 Preview: Stephen A Russell the eponymous Sparks, can’t quite sell what is a genuinely interesting flight of fancy. It’s telling that when Harry first reads his brother’s manuscript, he challenges Calvin’s unrealistic representation of women. So hamstrung, what we have for at least half the movie is predictably cheesy, tried-and-tested rom com fare. Things get more interesting as Calvin gradually exposes Ruby to the world, with enjoyably over-the-top cameos by Annette Benning and Antonio Banderas as his parents. Steve Coogan chews the scenery as Calvin’s drunk agent, and there’s a fantastic confrontation with his ex (played by Deborah Ann Woll). When the fledgling relationship starts to go stale, a clued-in Harry suggests Calvin rewrite

Ruby however he wants, and the film suddenly lurches into very dark territory. While far more interesting, it’s a violent jolt, and one that Kazan’s inexperienced scriptwriting fumbles. She

hasn’t the courage to follow through, either, with everything tied up neat and tidy by film’s close. Ruby Sparks is not terrible by any stretch, but it’s certainly no American classic.

Winners by a nose Sticking to the same old wines? Ben Thomas has some changes in mind tuck in a wine rut? Is shiraz losing its allure, or do you stick with sav blanc but would really like to try something else? Well, do I have a column for you. I’ve had a few friends ask me recently to recommend alternative wines to the ones they go for every time they’re in a bar or a bottleshop. The world of wine can be intimidating at times, and when you’re spending upwards of $20 on a bottle, it’s easy to play it safe by choosing something you know you’ll enjoy rather than take a risk and end up with a bottle you don’t like. Rather than recommend a few obscure grape varieties that will have you spending the best part of next Saturday tracking down, there are plenty of mainstream ones that are similar to what you may default to every time you pour a glass.

S

Crisp and light-bodied whites: Sauvignon blanc is the most popular white wine variety in the country, but if my sav-loving friends are any guide to its popularity, it won’t hold that mantle forever. They’re all looking for alternatives. Major retailers have evidence that shows they’re not alone either. Their stats show that women in particular are switching from sav blanc to pinot grigio at a rapid rate. I reckon they’re missing a trick by moving straight to grigio, a wine that can be utterly refreshing and delicious but is also capable of true blandness. Closer to sav blanc in style, but with more complexity, are the highly aromatic grapes riesling and gewu¨rztraminer. Albarino (pictured) from the north of Spain and the Italian pair fiano and vermentino are also worth seeking.

D E IV R R A T S JU

Medium-bodied textural whites: If you’re a little like me and keep reaching for the chardonnay, a white from France’s Rhoˆne Valley or a barrel-fermented pinot gris makes a nice change. Light-to-medium reds: I’ll agree that pinot noir is a wine you’re unlikely to ever tire of, but the vibrant gamay is a delicious alternative. It’s the grape in Beaujolais, a relatively inexpensive light red when compared with its pinot noir-based neighbour in France, Burgundy. Always think cabernet sauvignon when you think red? Try it in a blend or reach for a straight merlot from time to time. Medium-to-full-bodied reds: Feel free to substitute grenache or mourvedre for a shiraz – or a blend of all three in a GSM – or a tempranillo-based wine from Spain’s Rioja region next time you’re thinking about shiraz.

THE ONLY PLACE TO BE FOR THE 2012 AFL GRAND FINAL

‘Buddy’ Franklin gets his kick against Ted Richards

The match winners The Hawks No. 3 Tough and inspirational midfielder and halfforward and joint vice-captain, Jordan Lewis was the top provider of goal assists to Coleman Medal winner Lance Franklin. No 15 Captain Luke ‘Mr Fixit’ Hodge can turn a game with his hard-at-the-ball approach. Will lead the club despite last week’s miss.

Conditions apply

Party time for Bolton and Swans o one was going to crash Jude Bolton’s 300th game celebrations on Friday night, least of all Collingwood. The likeable Sydney midfielder led his team to a memorable 26-point win over their arch rival to book a place in Saturday’s grand final against Hawthorn. It will be the club’s third grand final in eight years and its first decider again the brown and gold. Last Friday’s win comes with a portent: by winning the same Friday night game in 2005 they stormed into the grand final to beat West Coast for their first flag as the Sydney Swans. Although they go into this weekend’s contest as underdogs, there’s a sense of confidence about the Swans’ ability to handle pressure and shut down their opponents. Players of the calibre of Josh Kennedy, Ted Richards, Adam Goodes, Bolton, Jarrad McVeigh and Ryan O’Keefe are primed for the big tim and Lewis Jetta provides a spark that ignites many a forward thrust. Bolton was superb in Friday night’s contest which Sydney led throughout. The Swans were 14 points up at quarter-time and seven goals up late in the third quarter before the Magpies began their inevitable charge.

N

No. 23 The game’s biggest star, Lance Franklin is a nightmare opponent who revels in the one-onones. His short, damaging bursts through the midfield make him almost impossible to match up. The Swans No. 12 Defender Josh Kennedy has blossomed since joining the Swans from Hawthorn in 2010. He topped the AFL in clearances last season and finished second at the Swans in disposals and third in tackles. No. 37 Co-captain and dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes will send shudders through defenders in Saturday’s grand final. At 31, he is at his scintillating best.

59 Grant St Bacchus Marsh Phone 53 672 031

Jude Bolton celebrates after kicking the Swans final goal against Collingwood to help them secure a grand final berth. It was his 300th AFL game.

No. 25 Full-back Ted Richards has taken on a leadership role in the Swans backline and is rarely beaten. He finished third at the club with 107 marks for the season. As in the photo above, he will probably take on ‘Buddy’ Franklin on Saturday.

But, although the margin was reduced to 20 points, the momentum Sydney had generated throughout the game gave it the confidence it needed to withstand the pressure. The Swans backed themselves and held their nerve. There was to be no fade out. The grand final holds no fears for this cohesive unit, eight of whom have played every game and four who have missed only one game. Their familiarity with each other was evident on Friday night when innumerable passages of play — like smooth links in a chain — inevitably led to a Swans’ forward thrust and goal. A sense of desperation helped them scramble to smother many a Collingwood attack, resulting in valuable turnovers. The Swans were an irresistible force with no immovable object in their way. Their only weakness was inaccuracy in front of goal when easy chances — and possible game breakers — were missed. While these gave the Pies hope of an unlikely victory, the force was wearing red and white and it had come to celebrate Bolton’s party. His second was the Swans’ final goal for the night. There was to be no denying a Swans victory.

ho can deny the Hawks the right to be favourites in Saturday’s grand final? They have the stars and the structure to beat Sydney — and the knowledge that they can beat the Swans even after giving them a head start. Who could forget the pair’s round 22 clash in Sydney when the Swans romped away to a 37-point lead, only to have the Hawks reel them in for a seven-point victory. But the Swans can take solace from their win over the Hawks in Tasmania in round five. This Saturday’s clash will be one to remember: the tight-checking Sydney with the game’s most miserly defence, up against a Hawks’ forward line chock full of stars ready to kick match-

lights with Sam Mitchell, Brad Sewell, Jordan Lewis, Liam Shiels and company to go head to head with Josh Kennedy, Kieran Jack, Daniel Hannebery and Ryan O’Keefe. The Swans swung a surprise on Friday night with dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes starting the match in the midfield. It would be an even greater surprise if he doesn’t spend significant time forward on Saturday with the undersized Hawks’ backline to be stretched with talented youngster Sam Reid and Lewis RobertsThompson as strong Swans marking targets. Lewis Jetta has been the barometer for the Swans this year and Alistair Clarkson is likely to give Shane Savage, Matt Suckling or Clinton Young the task on him. Or, he may back his team in and allow his own electric speedster Isaac Smith to take the talented Swan.

Few will forget Jordan Lewis’ five goal haul in the Hawks’ dismantling of Collingwood or Paul Puopolo tearing Port Adelaide apart with five of his own or the majestic Cyril Rioli booting six against St Kilda in May. Focus on Buddy at your own peril. Ignore him at even greater peril. The huge task of manning Franklin is likely to fall to Heath Grundy, with the rugged Swan doing a superb job on Travis Cloke in the preliminary final on Friday night. Unlock the potential This large 1950s property offers many possibilities in terms of development and extension, writes Carole Levy his is a property with a two-pronged focus: the land of about 2400 square metres ripe for development, or a house in completely original 1950s condition that throws down the gauntlet to a creative renovator. With the exception of a later extension, added probably around the early 1970s, the house retains archetypal light fittings, including wall sconces, an untouched bathroom with pedestal basin, sash windows and a kitchen fit-out with curved cupboard ends and slanted drawer faces. It is truly a step back in time. The land size means a contemporary rear

extension is eminently doable and the gardens have a lot going for them. A weeping cherry twisted with age, and trees such as oak, ash and maple are enviable bones around which to build a new garden, and there’s a daffodil bed, orange trees and pergolas heavily laden with wisteria, banksia rose and a delicate lemon creeper. Brick-paved walkways and stone retaining walls are other elements to fire imagination. The house has, in the original section, an entry foyer, three bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen and a lounge-dining room with fireplace. A step down

from the kitchen leads to a laundry, and a timberlined sunroom with exposed ceiling beams, builtin shelves and sliding doors to a brick-paved sitting area. There are several outbuildings, fairly dilapidated, but they’re helpful in marking out the scale of the yard and suggestive of what could be achieved. The property’s location is another big drawcard. From the front, it has views of market gardens, it’s a moment’s walk from Bacchus Marsh Primary School, a couple of minutes’ stroll from the town centre and, as the icing on the cake, has easy access to the Avenue of Honour to counter traffic snarls.

Stunning Sunbury leaves bridesmaid tag at altar BY GAV McGRATH

Big bag: Sunbury’s Simon Clarke marks on his way to seven goals then (below) Sunbury Lions celebrate with the BFL cup for the first time since 2004. Pictures: Shawn Smits

FINALLY, for Sunbury, redemption. The Ballarat Football League’s bridesmaid of recent years held aloft the 2012 premiership cup, after winning Saturday’s grand final at Eastern Oval in emphatic style. The eastern Lions stunned Redan with a nine-goal opening term on the way to a 23.17 (155) to 15.8 (98) victory. In the process they more than made amends for their two-point loss at the same venue last year. “To lose last year by two points in my first year at Sunbury, and then to win by about 10 goals, it shows how much the group has improved,” Sunbury coach Rick Horwood said. “The word around at the start of the year was that we would slide after last year. We had our doubters, so it’s pleasing for the playing group.” The eastern Lions kicked the first four goals of the match in the opening 10 minutes of play: two came directly from the boot of key forward Simon Clarke while the fourth he gave off to Xavier Linton. Redan did not get on to the scoreboard until the 12th minute (Damien Horbury converted a free kick) but the

for Redan in the second quarter but Sunbury still outscored the western Lions by seven goals to four in the second term. Clarke kicked a further two while Jay Cheep illustrated the ease with which the eastern Lions scored when he stepped around a Redan defender for the easiest of goals midway through the term. By half-time Sunbury enjoyed a 62-point lead after dominating play. The margin was 71 points at the final change. Redan showed some character in the final quarter, kicking five goals to three, although the western Lions were never in a position to threaten. Simon Clarke was dominant in the forward line with seven goals, Ross Sleight came out better than even in his battle with Redan champion Jarrod Edwards, while Jame Lobb was tremendous, both as a playmaker in the middle and an effective small forward. Ruckman Pat Cariss was also outstanding, winning his duel against Brett Dickinson and Nick Bye, while defender Brett Chambers played an almost faultless game at full back. “I knew at the five-minute mark we were ‘on’,” Horwood said. “The way the team attacked the football at the start of the game was a statement about their intention. “Redan kicked four in a row in the last quarter. One of our aims at the start of the game was not to let them kick two in a row. “I thought at the time it might take some of the gloss off the win. But you don’t think about that now. It was a fantastic win.” — Ballarat Courier Go to meltonweekly.com.au for more photos from the game

Roos leap to narrow victory over Romsey BY TEO PELLIZZERI

SCOREBOARD

SUNBURY Kangaroos charged to premiership glory with four goals in the final eight minutes against Romsey in the Riddell District Football League grand final on Sunday. Chris Meacham’s set-shot goal as the siren sounded with the ball in the air won the game for the Roos and a first senior club premiership, 12.14 (86) to 12.11 (83). Romsey had led by as many as 29 points and was never headed during the game. It still led by 21 points 17 minutes into the final term before the Kangaroos’ last hurrah. If not for errant, at times gilt-edged kicking for goal, Sunbury might not have made its task so difficult. But superior Romsey conversion and poor Sunbury discipline would combine to build an arm’s-length lead for the Redbacks for the majority of the match. Meacham may have taken the glory but it was forward foil Jared Pretty’s four-goal haul that kept the Roos within striking distance and then ignited the comeback. Pretty’s roving goal that bounced through an unguarded goal square 17 minutes into the final quarter pegged the margin back to 15 points, the closest the Roos had been since the 23-minute mark of the second term. Suddenly Sunbury had a sniff. Meacham juggled a mark inside forward 50m but it wasn’t paid, nor was an attempt from fellow co-coach Jamie Cuffe. Cuffe then won a free kick for a push in the back and was walked 20m out to make the margin nine points after 22 minutes. Two minutes later Ryan Hatty was taken high 40m out and, in stark contrast to the kicking for goal throughout the game, he held his nerve to convert. In the 25th minute, Joeb Ploog marked in the back line, found Cuffe in the middle and his high

ball created the match-winning chance. Romsey’s Phil Romeril got first hands to Cuffe’s kick, then roved the spill, but was pinged holding the ball 40m out in a Meacham tackle. Meacham made no mistake from the final kick of the day. Romsey’s Matt Davidson edged a hard-fought battle against Sunbury’s Daniel Gregory to boot three goals, while the midfield run and delivery of Chris Petroro was a Redbacks highlight. Ash McNaughton and Blake Henderson were good contributors for Romsey with run and carry as the Redbacks built their lead. An opportunistic goal for Mitch Farmer, Romsey’s only other multiple goalkicker, had made the margin 29 points three minutes into the third term. Cuffe, who won the Doug McIntyre Medal as best afield, was crucial in the air all over the ground for the Roos, while son Tierone was prolific in midfield roving to ruckman Leigh Fishenden. Stunned in the sun, Melton surrenders BY TEO PELLIZZERI MELTON led the Ballarat Netball League A grade grand final after 17 seconds but from then on things disintegrated. Lake Wendouree comfortably accounted for Melton 50-31 to win a fifth premiership in six season. Melissa McCauley scored Melton’s opening goal but the Bloods would have to wait more than five minutes to hit the scoreboard again. By then Lakers still led only 5-2 after a scrappy opening, with both teams left lethargic by the grand final day sunshine. Melton was swamped in the midcourt and could find little space for Jaclyn Verbeek or Jessica Kalmar to hit targets coming out of defence. Instead long, hopeful passes became the firstquarter fare, with Lake Wendouree’s midcourt claiming the majority of the high balls and skipping out to an 11-2 lead. However the contest stayed hot for the next term, with Melton stemming the flow to fight

goal for goal through the second quarter. But the Lakers looked comfortable, exchanging goals with a double-figure margin as a safety net. Two quick goals in the final seconds before half-time undid the hard work and let Lake Wendouree escape with winning the second quarter. McCauley remained the go-to target in the third term but the play of Lake Wendouree midcourter Kirsty Walsh and shooting accuracy of diminutive goaler Gina McCartin kept the score ticking over in Lake Wendouree’s favour. Melton kept positional changes to a minimum, giving its only reserve Tegan Gardam the last quarter in wing attack. But the energy from enthusiastic Lake Wendouree replacements like Molly Boyle served only to blow the margin out further, as high as 21 before the final margin settled at 19. Lions grab lead and suddenly it’s all over BY TEO PELLIZZERI REDAN steadily asserted its dominance over Darley to deny the Devils the Ballarat Football League reserves premiership by 51 points on Saturday. The Lions led by just seven points at the first change but extended the margin to 20 at the long break, 38 at the last change and then ran out 15.12 (102) to 7.9 (51) winners. A physical and low-scoring opening came with no reward on the scoreboard despite Darley’s efforts. . Mitch Gillespie booted three goals for the Devils and Jackson Lesko two.

Cobras lose their sting in mid-game doldrums BY TEO PELLIZZERI A LACK of transition play kept Bacchus Marsh off the scoreboard for long periods in the Cobras’ 46-point under-18.5 loss to Redan on Saturday. The Lions led by just four points at quarter time but restricted the Marsh to one goal in the second and third quarters combined on the way to a 12.14 (86) to 5.10 (40) result. Bacchus Marsh was allowed to keep possession in its defensive 50m arc without too much pressure at times, but moving the ball past halfway proved far more difficult. More risks were taken in the final term and scoreboard rewards followed. But some gettable set shots were missed, costing the Marsh the chance to win the final term.
