Inquiry spells end to ‘fairytales’

BY ANDRIA COZZA and MELISSA CUNNINGHAM A ROCKBANK woman who suffered years of abuse in an orphanage has welcomed the federal royal commission into institutional abuse. Judith Leonard, 65, hopes the inquiry will persuade adults who were abused as children to come forward. Ms Leonard said she and many other children who tried to tell their stories were often told to stop lying. ‘‘We were told it was a fairytale or that it was our imagination,’’ Ms Leonard said. She said there were many instances of cruelty at the Victorian orphanage where she stayed. ‘‘You would be punished if you lost a toy you were given — if you were given one at all. You were locked in a room like a cell. ‘‘I was luckier than most, but we are still suffering today . . . and needing social workers and doctors to help us understand why we feel the way we do. ‘‘Sometimes I just break down and cry. ‘‘The abuse will only stop when every man, woman and child says this abuse can not continue.’’ Ms Leonard said she had been empowered by the support given by the Care Leavers Australia Network (CLAN). ‘‘For years, I have felt like I didn’t fit into any world, but I finally feel like I fit.’’ Prime Minister Julia Gillard announced the commission last week amid a flood of fresh allegations about systematic abuse and coverup by the Catholic church in NSW. Announcement of the commission coincided with Victoria’s state parliamentary inquiry into sexual abuse by clergy. Scores of non-profit groups, including sports clubs and Scout troops, will be included in the investigation, which will extend far beyond the Catholic church and other religious orders that have been the focus of sex abuse concerns in the past. Cardinal George Pell said Australian

CLAN executive officer Leonie Sheedy said governments, churches, charities and organisations had to be held accountable for criminal assaults, rapes, child labour and the neglect of children. ‘‘It is now time for these organisations to assist in healing and repairing people’s shattered lives,’’ she said. ‘‘They deserve justice and reparation from the government for what has been done to them.’’ The commission’s terms of reference are being drawn up. bishops would co-operate fully with the commission. But he defended the way the church had dealt with complaints. Western suburbs resident Keith Broadbent said victims had endured ‘‘enough tragedy’’ in their lives. He said many had been unable to maintain relationships, while some remained too afraid to reveal what happened to them. ‘‘Men are the worst for it. They don’t speak about it . . . I think there is a lot of shame associated with it if you’re a man.’’ He hoped the royal commission would encourage victims to speak out. ‘‘I think the greatest hope in all of this is that the truth comes out and that the perpetrators are punished for their crimes,’’ he said. ‘‘There need to be laws put in place that prevent this ever occurring again.’’

Shop worker threatened

A man is wanted in connection with an armed robbery at a Melton Indian restaurant last Sunday. Police said the man carrying a silver blade with a wooden handle entered the restaurant through a back door about 9.45pm. He approached kitchen staff before taking about $200 from a till. He was wearing a balaclava and gloves. Police are appealing for witnesses.

Not quite putting pedal to metal BY ANDRIA COZZA MELTON Council is spending far less on cycling infrastructure than other municipalities but maintains it is doing enough for riders. Bicycle Network Victoria’s annual Bicycle Expenditure Index (BiXE) reveals Melton spent $4.47 per person last financial year — below the outer-metropolitan average of $5.65. The figure is based on council spending of $505,000 and a population of 112,981. Local investment included the Federation Drive shared path, a shared path and bridge at Navan Park, a High Street trail bridge and Tenterfield Drive shared path. The report did not include projects

Thieves kick in door Police are investigating a burglary on the outskirts of Melton on November 12. At Faircroft Drive, Brookfield, offenders kicked open a deadbolted front door between 7am and 9pm. They searched bedrooms and rummaged through drawers, taking jewellery and a TV from the lounge room. Information on the above crimes to Crime Stoppers, 1800 333 000

Council’s general manager of planning and development, Luke Shannon, said significant infrastructure was added by developers on behalf of council. ‘‘The BiXE rating is not a true reflection of the investment being made in the municipality.’’ Mr Shannon said the council recently mapped its entire bike network to highlight missing links and potential projects for consideration as part of its budget. Bicycle Network said priorities for Melton included trails in new residential areas to provide healthy transport options and safe routes to schools. Brookfield cyclist Raymond Sparks said he was very pleased with the number of bicycle tracks in Melton.

Raymond Sparks (pictured) will fulfil a long-held dream on Sunday when he starts pedalling in the Great Victorian Bike Ride. The Brookfield cyclist, 70, says that after completing extensive training around Melton, he’s confident he will cope with the nine-day, 600-kilometre journey from Lakes Entrance to Phillip Island. His wife Kaye will volunteer in the catering team, helping feed 4000 riders during the challenge.

Police are seeking witnesses to an armed robbery at a Coburns Road 7-Eleven shop. A man entered the shop at 12.22am last Thursday and bought a packet of cigarettes, then left. Police said that at 12.27am the same man reentered the store smoking a cigarette. He demanded money from the shop attendant, then produced a small knife. The robber removed a cash drawer from under a counter before leaving the store. He is Caucasian and was wearing a white hooded jumper, white baseball cap and dark track pants.

Coal search ‘no need for concern’ BY NICK TOSCANO and ANDRIA COZZA

PICTURE: MICHAEL COPP

A MINING company hoping to have its permit to search coal beds near Melton renewed has moved to quell contamination concerns, saying its technology is a ‘‘non-invasive and non-toxic’’ process. But Melton Environment Group president Daryl Akers said any type of coal mining or underground methane production in Melton would be unacceptable. Melbourne-based miner Regal Resources has narrowed its licence parameters to a 17,000-hectare area surrounding Mount Cottrell, Eynesbury, Exford and Balliang East where it intends to continue trialing an underground methane-production technology. The licence previously spanned most of Wyndham and parts of Geelong, Melton and Hobsons Bay. It expired in September.

The renewal application is being considered by the Department of Primary Industries. Regal Resources director Rohan Gillespie told the Weekly the company was excited about its licence in the region, after tests of its patented coalto-liquids technology at a pilot plant in the You Yangs yielded positive results. But Mr Akers said the Mount Cottrell, Eynesbury, Exford and Balliang East areas had been marked for future residential development. ‘‘How many people will want to buy houses in an area under the threat of methane production? Can the mining company guarantee that there will be no toxic methane leakage?’’ Mr Gillespie said the process of converting lowrank coal into a crude oil substitute by pumping steam into the coal beds and liquefying coal underground was no cause for concern about the environment. ‘‘Non-toxic materials are injected

into the coal seam to stimulate indigenous bugs in the coal to produce methane,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a very respectful technology and something that, if it proves viable, should have no adverse impacts on the environment.’’ Western Region Environment Centre director Harry van Moorst slammed the miner’s plans, saying the licence area covered protected native grasslands and would bring coal activity closer to homes in Melbourne’s western growth corridor. ‘‘If they get the go-ahead for this on the basis of this exploration licence, the reality is that within five years Wyndham and Melton will be seen as the backyard of coal. We’ll be coal municipalities, coal communities. I don’t think that’s what people want.’’ DPI spokesman Alex Wilson said the application was being considered before being referred to Resources Minister Michael O’Brien.

Doubts get the heave ho Budding discus thrower Leigh Dyson (pictured) is confident that with the right support, he’s on his way to the Olympics. The Brookside College pupil, 11, is preparing for this week’s national titles after winning gold at last month’s School Sport Victoria championships. ‘‘People have been saying if I keep up what I’m doing, I’ll be an Olympian . . . I am really strong for my age and if I keep practising, I will get better and better.’’ Leigh will compete in the School Sports National Championships in Adelaide on Friday.

Roosters destroyed MORE than 150 fighting roosters have been surrended from a second Melton property after an RSPCA raid. RSPCA inspector Shannon Walsh said officers went to sheds in Plumpton on November 1 when the gamecocks were humanely destroyed. The raid followed the breaking of an alleged cockfighting ring as the result of a raid on a Rockbank property in September. ‘‘The previous investigation brought to our attention other properties in Plumpton and Lovely Banks, near Geelong, where the two sheds were housing 300 gamecocks in total,’’ Mr Walsh said. Police are interviewing a man charged in relation to the Plumpton raid. More than 80 convictions relating to the Rockbank raid were handed down at Sunshine Magistrates Court on October 26 and November 2, 9 and 16. As reported by the Weekly, hundreds of birds and metal spurs were seized from Rockbank on September 9. Three- hundred roosters had to be destroyed. Of the 86 men charged, 84 were convicted and ordered to pay between $1500 and $2500, to be forfeited to the RSPCA. Magistrate Sharon Cure heard that police seized $100,000 in cash in the September raid. The RSPCA will receive the cash seized. Mr Walsh hoped the penalties would send a clear message that cockfighting was barbaric and most often resulted in the death of gamecocks. Each man convicted was also banned from owning roosters for 10 years. The remaining two cases will be heard at Sunshine Magistrates Court next month. — Andria Cozza

Sonny Parnis spent his final days fighting cancer surrounded by loved ones. His late mother Dolores also spent time in the care of the service. ‘‘It was one of his last wishes that we help raise Mercy’s profile in the local community so that more people could have the best possible end to their life, like he did,’’ niece Lisa said. ‘‘We believe passionately that every person deserves that right.’’ The Parnis family has raised $10,000 via a charity dinner. BY HELEN GRIMAUX SOCCER is a sport on the rise, but growth opportunities in the game’s north-west heartland are being curtailed by space. Nominated as the favourite activity of children aged 5-14 in an Australian Bureau of Statistics report released this month, soccer has a popularity borne out by enrolment numbers in Brimbank and Melton. Football Federation of Victoria spokeswoman Maria Berry said while Brimbank remained steady as a traditional soccer heartland, in Melton the game was experiencing strong growth. ‘‘The key challenge will be the ability of councils to provide enough facilities to meet the demand the sport is experiencing. We believe the reason for slow growth at some clubs is basically that they’re full and have to turn players away. If there are not other clubs close by, youngsters in particular can lose their opportunity to participate,’’ Berry said. There was a 21 per cent increase in player numbers in Melton in the past year, with 1037 registered , she said. ‘‘The Sunshine George Cross club, with its juniors now located in Caroline Springs, leads

the way with a 58 per cent increase and is now the biggest club in Melton with almost 400 participants.’’ Brimbank had the second-highest number of players overall in local clubs, with 2855 registered in the 2012 winter season. ‘‘Brimbank’s clubs reflect changes in the game overall, with growth in girls and women strong and a 24 per cent increase, while boys and men’s participation levels remained steady,’’ Berry said. ‘‘At 15 per cent of all registrations, Brimbank’s girls’ and women’s participation is now moving closer to the state average of 18 per cent.’’ Berry said most clubs in Brimbank grew last year (10 out of 16 posted increases), with numbers at Sunshine Heights juniors increasing by 50 per cent. Western Eagles led the way with growth in its girls’ and women’s participation, jumping 63 per cent. ‘‘In 2012, the top three participation clubs in Brimbank were Keilor Park with 494 players — making this the ninth-biggest club in Victoria — followed by Cairnlea and Green Gully.’’ Berry said the FFV predicted continued growth among juniors in Melton as new families take up residence, and further growth in senior levels in Brimbank as more newly arrived multicultural groups engaged with formal football structures.

INSIDESTORY

A good deed, indeed While still promoting a sense of adventure, Scouting offers young people a variety of important life skills, writes ANDRIA COZZA. s a Scout, Ben McLeod is proud to be in the good company of astronauts. Two of the three astronauts involved in the first lunar landing were Scouting members, he says with pride. There’s more: of the 312 pilots and scientists selected as astronauts since 1959, 207 were Scouts or active in Scouting. In all, there are 25 million members around the world and their chief Scout is non other than television adventurer Bear Grylls. ‘‘Scouts are everywhere,’’ Ben declares.

The enthusiasm of Ben and his family in Melton for the more than 100-year-old tradition is palpable. For the McLeods, Scouting is a shared passion. Mum Teresa got involved to spend more time with her children and eagerly took on the Scouting challenges, becoming a Leader. ‘‘It gets me to do things I wouldn’t normally do, like trekking five kilometres up in a mountain in snow.’’ While Scouts are often associated with selling cookies and tying knots, the McLeods are quick

to challenge the stereotype. ‘‘We’re canoeing or rock-climbing or caving on the weekends,’’ says Ben. ‘‘People wonder if Scouts are still around and think that they’re dying out, but it’s just the opposite.’’ For Teresa, it’s the perfect outlet for teens seeking thrills or for adrenalin junkies. ‘‘Teenagers want that risk factor and these days with public liability it’s becoming more scarce. With the Scouts, you can do all that exciting stuff, like taking helicopter rides, skiing down slopes on ice, and jelly-wrestling.’’ For Ben’s younger brother Malcolm, Scouting isn’t only about the adrenalin-inducing weekend activities. ‘‘When I started I was a bit shy, but now I can

walk up to people and start a conversation. I’ve travelled so much already, been to Sydney and America for camps, and I’ll be going to America again next year.’’ In between organising adventures on the weekends, Ben has been studying for the VCE. He says it has been easy to balance the two. Malcolm has taken full advantage of the training Scouts Australia provides, and he completed a Certificate II in business. Leadership training is provided through the Scouts Australia Institute of Training, a registered training organisation that offers qualifications recognised around the nation. The training helped Malcolm and fellow Rovers Scouts (aged 18-25) organise a twilight market in Melton once a month. ‘‘Setting up a fourhour market and having it go off without a hitch was a great thing,’’ Ben says. Teresa likes the idea of Scouts for her children, who have diverse interests, and the training available to her as a Leader (age 18 onwards). ‘‘As a leader, all the training is paid for and it’s an opportunity to get down to their level.’’ Teresa says that while teenagers will continue to want to take risks, being in the Scouts gives them a safe environment to make mistakes. ‘‘Kids will always be kids, but we trust them and that’s what it’s based on.’’ Scout leaders are volunteers who guide the younger ones during their weekly meetings, camps and activities. Australian Institute of Health and Welfare research shows that children who learn how to negotiate social interactions in the early years are more likely to achieve higher outcomes in education, health and well-being. Teresa’s daughter Maddy already knows she wants to head a family-run business. And thanks to activities Ben is involved in, he wants to pursue a career in the great outdoors. ‘‘My plan is to be an outdoor education specialist because of everything I’ve been exposed to. The Scouts have definitely given me a head start,’’ says Ben, who wants to apply to work in America next year as part of summer school camp

programs. The social skills Malcolm McLeod has learnt have given him confidence to consider working as an electrician. ‘‘I want to be a sparky and Scouts has taught me how to interact with people, something that’s important when you go to a person’s house. You have to build the trust.’’ Being trustworthy is a cornerstone for Scouts and most people are familiar with ‘Scout’s Honour’, the three-finger salute. For Maddy, the pledge translates to the world beyond Scouts. ‘‘Scout’s Honour is something you learn and live for the rest of your life. You know that obviously you won’t be kicked out of a camp, but you learn there is always going to be a consequence for your actions.’’ In Werribee, Maddy Packer and her brother Matthew also enjoy spending the time outdoors. ‘‘Especially when camping; Scouting gets you outdoors and learning lots of skills,’’ she enthuses. Maddy believes that being a Venturer has influenced the path she will take after she finishes school. ‘‘I guess it has influenced my interest in the environment and in animals, and I’d like to work in animal conservation.’’ Their mother Debbie Packer says Scouting can foster a sense of purpose in teenagers. ‘‘It gives them a great sense of belonging and, while it’s not competitive, they are challenged to improve on what they can do for themselves, rather than against others.’’ In Woodend, Lauren Walduck, 12, thinks more people should be involved in Scouting. ‘‘It’s fun and more young people should do it. There are so many different experiences and activities to look forward to. ‘‘Some of my friends have also joined and I’ve

Hannah, by contrast, loves badgework and learning traditional knot-tying. All say they have learnt an important lesson in life. ‘‘We learn a lot of respect for other Scouts,’’ says Casey, ‘‘and respect for people generally.’’ In January, Australian Scouts will attend a jamboree in Queensland along with 10,000 other Scouts from around the world. “This Council will be innovative, thinking outside the box to deliver quality infrastructure and finding solutions.

“As Deputy Mayor, I am committed to advocating for improvements in health services, transport and education.

I am proud to be the first Mayor elected for the newly designated City of Melton and would like to thank residents for putting faith in me to serve them over the next four years. I intend to lead by example and serve with integrity so this Council can achieve the best outcomes for the whole community. This Council will be innovative, thinking outside the box to deliver quality infrastructure and finding solutions. My priorities will be to unite my fellow Councillors to work as a cohesive team, advocate for an aquatic study for the whole municipality, focus on children’s services, youth, aged and disability services, better traffic management, better public transport including train stations at Toolern and Caroline Springs, and a 24 hour police station in the Eastern Corridor.

I am grateful to the people of Coburn Ward for allowing me to continue as a Councillor for another term. I am proud of what I have achieved so far for our community and I look forward to the completion of major projects such as the duplication of Centenary Avenue and the Melton Library and Learning Hub. As a lifelong resident and a local teacher, I have seen Melton develop into the vibrant city it is today. I will continue to advocate for a 24-hour public hospital for Melton, to ensure our community has the health services it deserves. I will also endeavour to have rates capped at CPI, so there are no more increases over the next four years.

“I am proud of what I have achieved so far for our community and I hope my efforts over the next four years will improve your lives.

As a long time resident in the area, I am enthusiastic and care deeply for my community and its residents. A teacher for 20 years and a mother of two young children, I understand the issues that are important to our community and will strive to get the best results. Now that I have been re-elected for another four year term I will continue to advocate for educational services, community facilities and better roads and footpaths.

I believe that Melton’s greatest asset is its community. As a Councillor since 2001, a mother and a resident of 25 years, I understand the concerns that are close to the heart of our community. I also understand the value of quality Council services and throughout this term I will continue to be your strong voice on Council and will work tirelessly on your behalf. I am passionate about Melton and will continue to foster the strong partnerships between Council, business and the community for continued, sustainable growth. I will continue to advocate for vital health and family services, more local jobs, and upgrades to local roads and highways.

“My main priority is standing up for families in our community.

“I want to see better communication between Council and the community and transparency on all levels.

I take this opportunity to thank all residents in Watts Ward, who have shown faith in my capacity and commitment to be their voice on Melton City Council. I believe that local government is about community. It’s about caring and it is about connecting, listening and helping regardless of mainstream politics. My main priority is standing up for families in our community. To do this I will work to ensure you have access to the facilities and resources that you deserve as ratepayers. I will work hard to deliver sustainable growth, adequate parking and the necessary infrastructure to meet our community’s needs.

I have seen the Melton community change dramatically in the 25 years that I have called the municipality home. I will work hard to keep rates in check, and advocate strongly for increased infrastructure delivery in keeping with our booming growth. As a first time Councillor I hope to inject a fresh approach into Council. I want to see better communication between Council and the community and transparency on all levels. I look forward to an open dialogue with the community; I am here to represent both rural and urban residents and welcome your ideas and feedback at any time.

MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER

As Victorians, we live in one of the country’s most fire-prone areas, so preparing for summer means preparing for fire.

Talk to your family and others in your life about planning and preparing for the threat of fire. If you have family, friends or neighbours who might need assistance leaving early before a fire, talk to them about how you could help. Please remember that on hot, dry windy days, fires can start and spread quickly. Check Fire Danger Ratings and warnings at cfa.vic.gov.au. If you are unsure, you should leave.

A classic in the making This house on a gentle rise has so much going for it, writes Carole Levy n a wide, gently elevated block in The Elms estate, this beautifully maintained house exudes a solidity that will set it up as a future classic. There’s no stinting on interior space and early ’90s de´cor needs only a brief wave of the cosmetic wand to bring it roaring into today. Mature trees dot the front lawns and, with roses, agapanthus, a weeping cherry and a sweeping, stamped-concrete driveway (leading to a double garage), its street face fits in nicely with other well-tended gardens in the court. The glossy-tiled entry foyer presents the first surprise, with a mirrored ceiling tricking the eye into seeing an upper storey. The second nice surprise comes with the family room at the back, which has enough space to host a grand party. This links via bi-folds to an L-shaped loungedining room with three chandeliers suspended from ceiling rosettes (decorative cornices are another touch) and, tucked into a recess, a timber bar with servery window to the family room. The galley-style kitchen has a dove-grey and white de´cor, a bench open to the family room, a

O

900mm gas cooktop, wall oven, dishwasher and microwave nook. Next door to the second bedroom, the main bedroom off the entry foyer has a bay window, fitted walk-in wardrobe and en suite with a spa. Two more bedrooms are down a hallway from the family room; the main bathroom, laundry with storage and separate toilet are nearby. A grapevine- and Laserlite-clad pergola has views of private, lushly planted gardens around a salt-chlorinated pool. A large room, accessed from the backyard and side carport, is ideal as an entertainment room, teenage retreat or even a rental bed-sit. There’s 28 squares of living space on a 1100-square-metre block, making this a ‘must-see’.

TRIPPING

A doff of the hat to Fez’s exotic fare BY REBECCA MILLER ravellers shouldn’t worry about the heat and possible culture shock when considering a trip to Fez, Morocco. I went last year and loved the experience. There’s plenty of things to love about Fez, including the sunny weather, historical buildings, food and drink— traditional tagine followed by mint tea anyone? Whether its a chicken, beef or vegie tagine with cous cous they’re all delicious and filling, while very sweet mint tea is a refreshing finisher. And my accommodation, like many buildings in Morocco, was decorated with mosaics. My hotel — once the British Embassy when Fez was the capital of Morocco — was at the foot of the medina (old city). I’d recommend a tour guide as the medina is like a rabbit warren and not the kind of place you want to get lost in the heat. A guide is also handy for people who don’t speak Arabic, French or Spanish as not everyone

T

speaks English yet, although clearly they’re doing well in the multilingual department! The medina consists of market stalls, businesses, mosques and living quarters. I visited a leather tannery and was given a large sprig of mint to sniff during the tour and thank goodness because the big, leather-soaking pots smelt like sewage but the colours were beautiful, just like the products in their shop. A visit to a pottery where traditional bowls, vases and tagines are made was interesting, just a shame it’s hard to bring the fragile, hand-painted wares home. And stepping inside a traditional pharmacy was intriguing with its various herbs, remedies and natural perfumes displayed in jars.

Lions’ bowlers hit back in T20 BY TEO PELLIZZERI

Veteran’s medal win BY LEN BAKER VETERAN Elmore-based horseman Neville Welsh (above) has received Victorian Harness Racing’s highest accolade, the Gordon Rothacker Medal. Welsh grew up in the SydenhamKeilor area and worked with his father Lew at the family farm, taking over driving responsibilities as a teenager. Winners soon followed and horses such as Selwitch and Ruggles helped put Welsh on the map. Years later, talented horses such as Murray Mac and Jotto came along, giving him further prominence. Welsh won the Melbourne Showgrounds drivers premiership in 1970-71 with 23 winners. He enjoyed success behind Son Of Nancy in the 1970 Mildura Pacing Cup and 1971 A.G. Hunter Cup, and, with the brilliant filly Annastere, he won both the Victorian Derby and Oaks in 1972. Welsh was narrowly beaten behind Monara in the 1972 (Brisbane) InterDominion Championship after trainer-driver Don Dove was suspended during the series. Welsh has enjoyed great success with trotters, the most notable being West Texas Crude, which became a victim of Ross River fever in his prime. These days, Welsh trains a small but select team. His son, Clinton, usually drives them while Welsh sits on the other side of the fence watching the action. However, he retains a driver’s licence and has the occasional drive to keep his eye in. Named in honour of the doyen of Victorian harness racing, the late Gordon Rothacker, the medal was first awarded in 2002 when it was won by Charlton’s Ian McCallum.

MELTON bounced back from a disappointing performance against Caulfield on Saturday to beat Sunshine on Sunday in their VSCDA south-west first XI clash. Melton’s 4-226 was nowhere near enough to beat Caulfield, which scored 2-234 in reply on Saturday as Ricky Damiano’s unbeaten century and Ben Shipperd’s 79 kept out the Lions’ bowlers. But the bowlers hit back on Sunday in a 20-over match as Melton (5-164) smashed Sunshine, which could amass only 79. Mick Allen top-scored with 69 for the Lions, while Nathan Allen’s 3-7 made him the best of the bowlers on an afternoon when six bowlers claimed at least one scalp. In the Legends and Heroes Twenty20 midweek

competition, a cameo from Melbourne Renegades’ Brendan Drew produced fireworks as Melton (1-124) beat Coburg (7-123) by nine wickets. Drew, who has played 34 first-class and 51 list-A matches for Tasmania, hit 79 off 35 balls and took 3-21 in a dominant display. In GDCA, Nicholas Strangio’s 4-77 haul was the key for Bacchus Marsh as the Bulls beat Romsey by 58 runs in McIntyre Cup. The Bulls failed to move out of seventh on the ladder with the win but, with 12 points, are now a game out of the top four, behind sixth-placed Sunbury (12) and fifth-placed Wallan (15). Defending 322 set the previous weekend, Strangio removed Romsey openers James Williams (59) and Brent Tonkin (62) to end a promising start to the run chase. Glenn Skrobolak (2-48) claimed Cameron

Armstrong (41) and wickets followed at regular intervals with six other Romsey bats reaching double figures but none passing 20. Brenton Payne was the other multiple wickettaker with 2-33 as Romsey was dismissed for 264. In WDCA, Melton South lost the first innings on day one against Grand United in A1 Turf on Saturday after being bowled out for 102. Grand United reached 5-174 at stumps, with Melton South’s Kane Teeken claiming 3-53 as best of the bowlers so far. In BCA, Darley bats faltered in first grade on Saturday as Napoleons-Sebastopol skittled the home team for 75 at Darley Park. Marcus Ingvorsen’s 29 saved Darley from greater embarrassment after it slumped to 6-35. Napoleons-Sebastopol will resume its run chase at 1-29 this weekend.

GISBORNE District Cricket Association Twenty20 returns this evening with the David and Goliath clashes of last year’s competition a thing of the past. This season, two T20 champions will be decided, with separate premier and district divisions. C grade outfit Hesket made it to the semi-final of last year’s competition but will be lining up in the district division this season. The premier division winner will go on to represent the GDCA at the Central Highlands Region Cricket Willow Cup in January. Round two is next Tuesday with semi-finals on December 4 and the two finals on December 11.
