Hazard highway’s speed limit cut
Hamper haul is Lynda’s aim
BY STEPHANIE ZEVENBERGEN
Lynda Southall (pictured) aims to have 150 food hampers ready to give away at Christmas. Having worked hard to get her charity, Lynda’s Hampers, up and running, the Melton resident hopes to receive a wealth of food and household items in preparation for the season when people are most in need. “We want to feed a lot of families this year,” she says. “Through donations, the community is helping the community, which you don’t see much of any more.” Details: 9746 9549.
SPEEDING, tailgating and illegal overtaking on the Melton Highway is putting motorists at risk and leaving police frustrated at the stupidity of some drivers. VicRoads last month dropped the speed limit on the highway between Melton and Hillside from 90km/h to 70km/h in an effort to reduce road accidents. Police say the stretch has been the site of a number of serious injury collisions and fatalities in recent years. Despite a two-week amnesty period when speeding drivers were given warnings, police are still detecting a high number of infringements. They hope lower speed limits will result in less severe injuries if collisions do occur. But Melton driver Melissa Craig said the speed reduction had caused a massive headache for motorists and had made the road more dangerous. She said the road needed to be duplicated.
“The road is a nightmare,” she said. “I constantly see drivers doing the wrong thing, putting themselves at risk. ‘‘You see people weaving in and out. If you get stuck behind someone, you’re stuck for a long time unless you overtake, which is a gamble.” Ms Craig uses the road to travel from Melton to Taylors Lakes. “A lot of people in Melton go to Watergardens shopping centre; this road is the only way in and out,” she said. “On a good run it takes 25-30 minutes. Now, with the reduced speed, it’s a 45-50 minute trip.” Melton’s Leading Senior Constable Allan Edwards said police would add extra resources and strictly enforce the new limits. “We just want people to continue to drive at the normal speed and not be intimidated by tailgaters and overtakers,” he said. ‘‘All they’re doing is getting 50 metres further down the road. They’re saving less than two seconds. I really can’t understand the mentality of people who are so impatient.’’
Bacchus Marsh housing project moves closer to construction start A council report said construction was likely to begin within three to five years. Former mayor Pat Griffin has objected to the project, saying it would worsen traffic and infrastructure woes. “We want to limit the current urban boundaries,’’ Mr Griffin said. Bacchus Marsh Residents Association chairwoman Margaret
Scarff said the time was not right. “The right infrastructure is not in place for further development on a large scale, and traffic is still a big issue,” she said. Kataland has offered close to $13 million in works funding, including a major contribution to a Halletts Way extension. But Mr Griffin believes this will fall “well short”. “It’s a $500 million
project we’re talking about,” he said. “If it were $15 million towards a $30 million project only, that’s different.” Mr Griffin said Bacchus Marsh residents should be given a say over whether they wanted to see 7000 people join the town. Kataland has also proposed sports fields including an oval and pavilion for cricket and football, with support

The council will request that Planning Minister Matthew Guy approve the amendment for exhibition to the public.

A LARGE housing development west of Bacchus Marsh is a step closer to construction after Moorabool council supported an amendment to the planning scheme. The council last week backed the rezoning of a 167-hectare site formerly occupied by the Underbank Stud Farm. Springs’ school a prep magnet
Djerriwarrh Health Services is trialling the use of Telehealth home monitoring equipment for Bacchus Marsh and Melton patients who have a chronic illness. The trial is part of a nationwide CSIRO research project. It uses the National Broadband Network, being rolled out in Bacchus Marsh and coming soon to Melton, to check health information such as blood pressure, pulse and weight on a daily basis. “Telehealth home monitor provides an opportunity to respond to more subtle deteriorations in people’s health before they need to visit an emergency service or be admitted to hospital,” Djerriwarrh chief executive Bruce Marshall said. Each patient in the trial will be provided with free home monitoring equipment and an NBN connection. Details: 9747 7602.
‘It would create 10 jobs initially. There’s a lot of excitement.’ Mr Khan’s son Wildan, 3, will be the first student enrolled. “If you’re going to make sandwiches, you have to eat one before you give them to other people,” he said. Mr Khan said West Melbourne Grammar would be funded by a trust run by a board of experts including himself, an accountant and a former professor from Victoria University. He said lessons had been learnt from the mistakes of Mowbray, which collapsed in June last year, leaving about 1200 students and 200 staff without a school. Mr Khan said Mowbray grew too quickly, expanding to campuses in Caroline Springs and Melton before it was financially viable. “We want to make sure that doesn’t happen again,” he said. Mr Khan said he expected a decision on his application within two to three months. As reported by the Weekly, the Melton campus was bought by Heathdale Christian College and will open next year.
No clarity on rates action A recent meeting of discontented farmers and councillors to discuss Moorabool rate increases was more about“information sharing” than preparing a plan for action, says Balliang East farmer Chris Sharkey. Mr Sharkey owns a 404ha farm on the border of Moorabool and Greater Geelong and pays rates to both municipalities. Last financial year he paid $15,000 to Moorabool shire. “We each said our side of the story; they can’t afford to lower [rates]; we can’t afford to pay it.” Mr Sharkey hopes a public meeting on the issue at Ballan Mechanics Hall from 7pm on July 22 will bring together farmers from different areas.

AT LEAST 70 prep places could be created next year if plans for a new private primary school in Caroline Springs are approved. A year after Mowbray College imploded with debts of $28 million, self-made millionaire and Wyndham councillor Intaj Khan has applied to the Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority to open West Melbourne Grammar at the campus, which he bought last year for $6.7 million. “Our conservative estimate at this stage is places for 70 children, but there will be no cap on that figure,” he said. “All the infrastructure is there. It just needs tables and chairs. ‘‘It would create 10 jobs initially. There’s a lot of excitement.’’ Mr Khan, chief executive of the Western Institute of Technology, told the Weekly he had already received interest from 11 families keen to send their children to a multicultural school not dominated by one religion. While he acknowledged parents had expressed a desire for a new secondary school at the former Mowbray site, he wanted to start conservatively with a prep class in 2014 expanding to a prep-grade 6 school by 2020. “Starting with a secondary school could jeopardise our business plan – there’s no guarantee we would receive the enrolments,” he said. “Starting from prep, the expenses are less and the community can embrace the culture.” The school’s proposed motto is noli desistere discere, which Mr Khan says is Latin for “never stop learning”.

NEWS A 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged with burglary, theft and driving offences after a pursuit in Melton. Police tried to stop a vehicle towing a trailer carrying a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Brennan Street as part of a routine inspection about 2.45pm last Tuesday. The man refused to stop and a pursuit began. The vehicle was found abandoned in a court off Brooklyn Road and the man was located nearby. A large amount of stolen property was found in his vehicle, including the motorcycle. The man has been remanded in custody.

Water shares allocated Bacchus Marsh’s irrigation season has opened with an allocation of 75 per cent of high-reliability water shares for growers. Southern Rural Water water supply manager Edward Smith said a dry summer meant the starting allocation was lower than last year’s 100 per cent, but with a wetter than average winter predicted he was hopeful of allocation increases.

A MELTON South father hopes new evidence will lead to a coronial inquest into the death of his teenage son. Damien Sheehy’s son Daniel, 18, died in their home on March 14 last year after a fire broke out in Daniel’s bedroom. Mr Sheehy has always believed foul play was involved, despite the fire not being deemed suspicious by state authorities. Last week, Mr Sheehy said autopsy results recently provided to the family showed Daniel had two marks in his leg. “I believe it’s some kind of puncture mark, like a small bladed knife or just something sharp, but it pierced his bone,” Mr Sheehy said. “The guy who did the autopsy couldn’t work out what caused it, whether it was done before or after his death, but it had to have happened before because I was with him when he died and he kept saying ‘I can’t get up’.” Mr Sheehy said on the night of his death, Daniel told him ‘no matter what, do not come into my room’. “He wasn’t gang-affiliated, but he was friends with two groups of gangs. Both groups hated each other and he was caught in the middle.” Coroners Court spokeswoman Sheree Argento said the investigating coroner intended to hold a directions hearing in October.

No abating of fenceline feuds BY PRISCILLA MOCA
“I look directly on it from my premises and the residents of the adjoining property look at it directly outside their loungeroom. It detracts from the nice condition of the street.” Mr Seymour has contacted Moorabool council’s planning unit, which is investigating the matter. For civil matters, the council recommends the DSCV’s free services as an ideal avenue of dispute resolution. However, the DSCV does not provide legal advice. “Effective communication is key in resolving disputes yourself,” DSCV spokesman David Leonard said. He recommended staying relaxed and keeping emotions in check. “Attack the problem, not the person. Listen to the other party and acknowledge their needs and feelings.”
THE Dispute Settlement Centre of Victoria (DSCV) received more than 170 calls from neighbours feuding over fencelines in Melton and Moorabool last financial year. A total of 147 complaints relating to fence disputes were received in Melton and 25 in Moorabool. Another 125 calls about the behaviour of neighbours were received across both municipalities. Bacchus Marsh resident Bruce Seymour has been advised to contact the DSCV to help resolve an ongoing dispute over a six-metre shipping container that was placed over a laneway that borders his property on June 15. Eleven other residents have signed a petition objecting to the storage container’s location, which Mr Seymour called an “absolute eyesore”.

Still moved by avenue of elms
Details: 0417 339 795
WHILE some people boast about the foreign sights they’ve seen, Bacchus Marsh’s Heather Shugg appreciates what’s at home and all that was sacrificed in World War I to attain it. Mrs Shugg’s father, John Chambers, and three of his brothers fought in the war and all have trees commemorating them along Bacchus Marsh’s Avenue of Honour. Their lives were cut short, Mrs Shugg said, all dying before the age of 60. One of her uncles, Harold Chambers, died at 21 in the Gallipoli landing. “When we were kids and the avenue was much younger too, we’d go and put flowers down at the tree since we didn’t have a grave for our uncle who was killed,’’ she said. ‘‘It’s silly to say a tree’s like a headstone, but to us it was because there was no grave to visit here.”
Mrs Shugg said although she has lived in Bacchus Marsh all her life, the avenue of tall elms still moves her. “Every time I drive down there, I think about them and remember. The avenue’s very beautiful – whatever the season, whether it’s just the stark branches of the trees in winter or the shade of them in the summer.” On August 10, Mrs Shugg will bring personal artefacts to the Bacchus Marsh Great War centenary committee’s awareness day. The event, at Bacchus Marsh’s RSL hall from 10am, will include storytelling, photography displays, school artwork, biographies, audiovisual displays, a sausage sizzle and information about the Avenue of Honour. Groups involved include the RSL, National Trust, Moorabool council, local schools, historical societies and photography groups.
VICROADS will inspect pedestrian crossing lights on Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, after complaints that several have not been working for some time. “We need [the lights] fixed before someone gets hurt,” Bacchus Marsh resident Kerryn Robinson said. “If someone’s wearing dark clothes and it’s raining it’d be pretty difficult to spot them.” VicRoads regional director Ewen Nevett said the street would be inspected within two weeks, but drivers should still be alert to the pedestrian crossing as amber flashing lights were working. “The speed limit through these zones on Bacchus Marsh Road is 50km/h, which should further reduce the safety risk to pedestrians,’’ he said. ‘‘VicRoads advises pedestrians and motorists to take care at all crossings, particularly at night.” – Priscilla Moca Report faults or hazards to VicRoads’ traffic management centre: 13 11 70

Drugs fuelled hygiene heist BY NICK TOSCANO A MAN has been convicted of stealing more than $3300 of hygiene products from supermarkets in Melton and Wyndham to fund a drug addiction. Police told Werribee Magistrates Court that Hong Ngoc Nguyen, 29, of Derrimut, was charged after being caught shoplifting from supermarkets during a two-month period last year. Police said they also found four kilograms of amphetamines, two kilograms of heroin and various other illicit drugs when they scoured his car for stolen goods. The court was told last Wednesday that Nguyen and a co-offender had first targeted a supermarket at Werribee Plaza, where Nguyen packed his pockets, pants and jacket with personal hygiene products. The pair drove to another supermarket, on Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing where Nguyen
stole more items. He was observed by a security guard before police arrived and arrested him while he was walking back to the car. Police found almost 100 packs of hygiene products valued at $1859 stolen from the first supermarket, and $853 worth of products stolen from the second. Two months later, a security guard in Caroline Springs caught Nguyen with 63 hygiene products, valued at $613, concealed in his jacket after robbing a supermarket. He was taken to Caroline Springs police station where he made full admissions. Nguyen’s defence counsel said the robberies had taken place “in the context of a drug addiction”. Magistrate John Bentley sentenced him to three months’ jail, suspended for 12 months. “If you commit another offence punishable by a term of imprisonment in the next year, you will find yourself in jail,” he said.
Coaching passion has court appeal After 14 years as a coach, Melton’s Danielle Borle has won a Tennis Victoria excellence award. Borle, who coaches children and adults at Sporsci Tennis Academy, says she’s grateful to have the chance to teach people the sport she loves and help boost their performance levels. ‘‘I coach kids aged three and up doing the grassroots program, all the way through to high performance, with kids chasing an Australian ranking,” she says.

Re: Love conquers all (Inside Story, Weekly, July 9):
Well done to the Weekly for publishing a well-written and relevant story on the issue of gay marriage. I concur completely with the sentiments that our society must grow up and be fair. Victorians are now also getting better value for our record investment. This is more training in courses for occupations such as child carers, aged and disabled carers, enrolled and mothercraft nurses and motor mechanics. Even unconditional love is challenged when children’s drug addictions take over their lives. Ben Cameron meets a group of women who are finding out that sometimes love means letting go.
t’s four days after Mother’s Day on a chilly Thursday night in Darley, and four women have come together in a nondescript council building to talk about their children’s drug addiction, and their own emotional and physical retreat. New support group Family Drug Help has been running for a few weeks before the Weekly is invited to hear the stories of this emotionally battered, but not broken, quartet. It’s already proven to be a major breakthrough for these self-confessed “addictees”, providing the first real opportunity to share their experiences with people who truly understand their daily battles. The group is moderated by ‘Amber’ from Bacchus Marsh. A recovering addict and mother, she proudly announces that, from two days ago, she’s been clean for 11 years. “I should have baked a cake,” one of the women quips, as this already-tight group breaks into laughter then applause. None of these women would be here without Amber’s initial bravery. A few months ago, she outed herself to more than 200 people at a community meeting about ice addiction. She opened up her soul about how drugs can turn friends into enemies, family into foe. The group was eventually pulled together by Bacchus Marsh police youth resource officer Jim Ross, following requests from parents to do “something for us”. Tonight’s theme is “Detaching from Love” – a method for dealing with the madness, where family members step back emotionally from the chaos that so often accompanies drug abuse. It’s
a way to reduce an addict’s power to hurt and manipulate those closest to them.
While each mother is at different stages of the process, ‘Joyce’ from Bacchus Marsh appears, on face value, the closest to a grim end. For seven years her son has been so addicted to “anything he can get his hands on”, death appears the only choice left. “I’m at the end of my journey of staying with him ... if he dies, he dies, I can’t stop it. You just want it to end,” she says. “You think they will be better off, if he’s in such a bad place. I don’t have any magic answers ... maybe I’m looking for a miracle, and there isn’t one. “I don’t know if you come to terms with it at all. I just think that you get to the stage where at some point you have tried everything that you possibly can. Every single thing.” Every single thing includes filming her son while in the throes of one of many drug binges. “I can’t believe I was like that,” her son had confessed through tears days later, as he watched himself convulse and eventually black out. But the plan didn’t work. ‘James’ has overdosed so many times – at least four times in the family home over the past six months – that Joyce has become numb to it all. “You have to face it [their possible death], if you like it or not. You have to face that they could die,” says mother of five ‘Sarah’ from Melton, who attends not because of her children, but her husband. While she’s physically detached from him – he’s in Tasmania right now “trying to get off” – she’s yet to cut the emotional ties. His taste
for drugs began with speed before it developed into a full-on ice addiction. Then came the “cycle of violence”, the paranoia, the psychosis and eventually the intervention order. “There have been times I wished he was dead, how terrible is that? I love my husband with everything I have, but to get to that point, that’s the devastation of drugs. It’s like we’re addictees. They’re addicts, we’re addictees.” Luckily, the group has allowed ‘Sarah’ to put more time into herself. “I feel like I’m loving myself more these days,” she says. “We still hope for our future, but how long do I wait?” For ‘Donna’ of Bacchus Marsh, mother of two ice addicts aged 17 and 19, the waiting game takes place on a weekly basis. “By the end of every weekend you wonder, Are they still going to be alive? Every weekend I know they’re doing all these things to themselves. I didn’t see either of them on Mother’s Day, which was a good thing. “Every weekend, [I think] is it going to be this weekend? Are they still going to be here on Monday? I don’t know if I’m happy, sad, anything. I just want it to be over, really. I’m just tired of the merry-go-round. And I can’t get myself off.” ‘Sandra’, mother of a 23-year-old ice addict, is exhausted. Tired of the emotional extremes and the knowledge that even when she does find rare moments of calm, it’s merely a prelude to the inevitable “explosion”. “They would climb Mt Everest to get it [ice],” the Myrniong resident says. “The addiction is so great.” The “chaos business” as she calls it, has been so encompassing, she can’t recall why she kicked her son out of home in the first place. “[He’s been on drugs] for years, I don’t know how long, probably for six years I’m guessing,” she says. “We slept for a week and a half in the passage way to keep him in his room; it was horrendous. He doesn’t live with us now. We had an intervention order because he was going
“I’m at the end of my journey of staying with him ... if he dies, he dies, I can’t stop it.” to burn the house down at one stage. He was supposed to come on Mother’s Day for lunch. He worked with my husband on Friday ... haven’t seen him since.”
It’s only as the conversation begins to flow over coffee, laughter and an endless supply of mints (if these women have a vice of their own, it’s definitely sugar) that Sandra suddenly remembers why he had to leave: he threatened to stab his sister. No wonder her thoughts often stray into some very dark places. “I thought of death, I thought it would be good one time because you’d be at peace, and that’s sad, isn’t it? “At one stage I thought, I don’t like him any more. I thought that’s a bit cruel, a mother who doesn’t like their own child. They just grind you down that much. It sounds selfish, but then you’ve got peace, it becomes so consuming.” While there’s still a long road ahead for each of these women, they’re walking it more strongly than ever before, thanks to the group. “We’re all detaching,” Joyce announces proudly. “We do care, but we’re able to keep a distance.” For Sarah, having the group’s support has changed her life. “It helps us be set free, to hold our heads up and get some purpose back into our lives and some direction. Who would have thought we’d need a journey to recovery?” To contact the group, phone Jim Ross on 5366 4500 JULY 16, 2013 \ WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE 13

n 2002, Melton’s Pam Shepheard set out on a 10-day journey that changed her life. It was her first time in the Variety Bash, an annual car rally from Melbourne to Alice Springs that raises money for children with a disability or illness. This year’s trip from Echuca to Broome will be her 11th rally with husband John. Together, they have raised $127,681. Shepheard was inspired to get involved by her son Troy, who had a rare muscle disease. He died from a heart attack seven years ago, aged 28. She was recently nominated by Variety for a Pride of Australia Medal for her charity work. “I could see as a parent of a sick or disabled child there were hurdles everywhere,” she says. “I decided I wanted to do something to help other families facing the same battles.” This year, the Shepheards hope to raise $20,000. “We have a lot of support from local businesses in Melton – we do sausage sizzles, coin collections and we do raffles,” Shepheard says.

Starting house & land packages from $271,000
When being older can be a plus From the slate floors to the timber window frames, this is a home which holds its age well, writes Carole Levy
ne of the advantages of an older house is that any construction flaws have been discovered and addressed. And in this house on more than 1200 square metres, the solid bones have stood up well. It has old-school slate floor tiles (which are making a welcome comeback) and stained timber internal doors, architraves and window frames, all of which add to the feeling of substance. Living areas include a carpeted lounge room (at the front) with an elegantly dressed bay window, a family-meals area and a big, step-up,
carpeted rumpus room which opens to a paved outdoor area leading to a covered pergola. Views from the sink of distant hills, lots of bench space, soft latte-toned cabinetry, a wall oven and a gas cooktop are features of the kitchen. The main bedroom at the front has a bay window, two mirror-faced wardrobes and an en suite with heat lamp. Another bedroom - also workable as a study - is off the family room, while two more (with triple-door wardrobes) are down a hallway; they flank a shower/bath room preceded by a vanity basin
and separate toilet. The laundry has ample storage and benches. Back and front gardens are well executed on a block with changing levels; at the front, terraced beds traverse the gentle slope and, out back, a terraced rockery rises to the expanse of flat lawn where boxed vegie gardens have their place. Side yards are flat and well laid out with paved and pebbled areas, brick borders and pretty garden beds. Opposite a park and with views of the countryside, this is a property with loads of appeal for a family.

Go park yourself Volvo takes the pain out of parking, writes Rod Easdown
With a self-driving Volvo, you can kiss all this goodbye. You simply get out of the car at the shopping centre entrance and hit an app on your smart phone that tells the car to park itself. It will roam around, interacting with cars and with transponders set into the floor of the park until it finds a cosy space where it will wait quietly for you. It can reverse park, forward park or parallel park. And who cares how far away that parking spot may be? Certainly not you, because when you’re done shopping you simply return to where the car left you, call it on the phone and it will collect you. It won’t be wearing the bodies of unfortunate pedestrians who strayed into its path because it’s smart enough to stop for them, with cameras and motion detectors to pick them out. Nor will it have scraped any walls or columns or other cars. With due respect, it may be better at parking than your good self, and possibly more patient. “Combining autonomous driving with detection and auto braking for other objects
arlier this year I wrote about how our lives may change when cars start driving themselves and, fool that I am, I missed the best bit. I covered all sorts of good stuff, such as having the car drive you to work and then drive itself home again, thereby avoiding expensive city parking. No more taxis and airport parking. And given that autonomous cars would stick to the speed limit, you could forget cameras and speed cops as well. But Volvo has just come up with an idea that knocks all these right out of the ballpark. How long do you spend driving around in circles looking for a parking spot? If you’re a Saturday regular in any of the big shopping centres and you’re not into long, boring walks through hectares of cars, I’m willing to bet that cruising around looking for a spot takes a major chunk out of your schedule, especially when you have to wait for the mum who is about to leave but has to pack the little ones into the back seat, then fold the pusher.
makes it possible for the car to interact safely with other cars and pedestrians in the car park,” says Thomas Broberg, senior safety adviser at Volvo Car Group. So how far away is all this? It’s closer than you think; Volvo has already demonstrated it to journalists. Maybe next we’ll get a car with legal training that can argue with parking inspectors.
Things you didn’t know about motoring A national study of 300 motorcycle riders by legal firm Slater & Gordon shows 45 per cent have been injured in accidents.

Bacchus Marsh was in control from start to finish in its 78-point hiding of Sebastopol in Ballarat Football League on Saturday. The Cobras’ outside run at the top six received a much-needed percentage boost from the 16.13 (109) to 4.7 (31) win at Marty Busch Reserve. The Marsh players were on song from the opening bounce, enjoying an eight-goal first quarter while Sebastopol could manage only two behinds. The Wilson brothers, Mitch and Leigh, were up and about in the opening term, with Mitch kicking two goals to help his side to a commanding 53-point lead at the first change. It took until the 25-minute mark of the second term for a goal to be kicked, with Bacchus Marsh grabbing a crucial six points against the breeze. The Cobras backed that up within minutes with Abraham Kur kicking his second goal and giving the visiting side a 64-point half-time lead. Bacchus Marsh put in a powerful performance in worsening conditions. Sebastopol was unable to
piece together a run of good football until the 20-minute mark of the third term, when it scored consecutive goals. But the Cobras continued to control the match, with the likes of the Wilsons, Daniel Velden and the hard-working Tyson Shea putting on the classy display, while Kur used his height to full advantage with an impressive display up forward. Sebastopol kicked two goals to one in the final quarter, with Michael Powell finally seeing some ball come into the Kookaburra forward line. Bacchus Marsh coach Doug Hawkins was very happy with his side’s performance, particularly in the first quarter. “I thought our first quarter was awesome – coming off the back of the last quarter last week against the Lakers, that’s basically 15 goals in two quarters,” he said. “It holds us in good stead for Melton next week, so we will go away and regroup. “We are only one game out of the top six now, so we keep the dream alive.” Bacchus Marsh (4-7, 89 per cent) is a win and just over 11 per cent behind sixth-placed Ballarat (5-6, 96).
Second-quarter mauling by rampaging Lions dents Panthers’ finals hopes A second-quarter surge from Redan has left Melton South running out of chances to step into sixth spot in the Ballarat Football League. Redan kicked five unanswered second-quarter goals to set up its match-winning lead in the 11.15 (81) to 7.11 (53) result at Melton
Recreation Reserve. South (4-7) sits seventh on the table behind Ballarat (5-6) and both teams losing at the weekend has let Bacchus Marsh (eighth, 4-7) climb back into the frame. Leading by two points at the first change, the Lions put their foot down in the second quarter to hold
“This was a game we really had to win,” assistant coach Darren Stanley said. “It’s going to be very hard to make finals now, although it’s still mathematically possible. “All season we’ve let ourselves down by failing to play four quarters
a 34-point lead at the main break, from which Melton South never looked like recovering. A four-goal effort from coach Mathew Sutton and a polished display by Doug Thomas helped the Panthers be more than competitive for periods of the game.
and, when you come up against good sides like Redan, you can’t get away with that.” Craig Searle, Simon Collis, Anthony Cristofaro and Joey Callus were other better Melton South players.

Riddell whips Romsey to keep unbeaten record
Trying conditions: Rockbank’s Jamie Zerafa gets a handball away
A thumping 56-point win over Romsey has given Riddell two games of breathing space atop the Riddell District Football League ladder. The Bombers remain undefeated with 12 wins, while their nearest rival, Diggers Rest, had a shock loss to Lancefield. Romsey is still well in the title race despite the loss, with six or seven senior players to return after the Redbacks’ bye this weekend. The Bombers set up the win much as they did against Sunbury the previous week, with a big second term. Aaron Blade started the onslaught with a goal in the first 15 seconds, and James Nolan did as he pleased with five first-half goals. Haydn Ross, Ethan Foreman, Anthony Sammut and Cameron Casson were getting plenty of the ball for Riddell as they streamed to a 56-point lead at the term’s 21-minute mark. A late goal for Matthew Davidson was the Redbacks’ only consolation. But the Redbacks lifted their game in the third term, kicking the first three goals to cut the lead to 30 points as the rain began to set in. Anthony Trigg and Chris Petroro, who was stretchered off the ground a week earlier with a knee injury, were the architects of the minirevival, though Riddell managed to stem the flow towards the end of the term.
The final quarter saw Riddell kick the only three goals to run out comfortable winners. Coach Troy Scoble said his team was impressive against quality opponents. “We’ve got this run of SunburyRomsey-Diggers Rest which is sort of like a mini-finals series,” he said. “We have to back it up week in week out. We came into the game today with a pretty clear game plan and I thought we followed that for three quarters pretty well. “Defence is what we’re trying to build the side upon so we were happy to hold them to six goals. The defensive mindset is always the hardest one to get into the players.” Around the grounds, Sunbury Kangaroos held Kilmore scoreless to half-time in a 99-point win at Eric Boardman Reserve. Phil Kaufmann kicked five for Sunbury and Leigh Fishenden three as the Kangaroos dominated the game from start to finish. Woodend-Hesket put in one of its best performances of the season in a 34-point loss to Broadford. Barry Hall booted 12 for the Roos but the Hawks were right in it until the last quarter. They trailed by just five points at the final break but were comfortably outscored in the last. Macedon’s finals hopes were dented with a 36-point loss to Wallan.

Player’s injury ends Rockbank-Rupo match By DANIEL PAPROTH A serious injury to Rockbank’s Chris Jones caused the abandonment of the Rockbank-Rupertswood clash during the third quarter on Saturday, with Rupertswood awarded the four points. Jones was knocked out after clashing heads with Rupo’s John Corso and then suffered convulsions. He was taken to hospital but with the

Rupertswood’s Brad Slater was also hurt, a knock to the shoulder initially feared to be an injury to the AC joint, but there was no structural damage. After a tight opening quarter, Rupo blew the game open in the second term with six goals to none. The four points
moved Rupo into fifth, with Melton Centrals having a bye this week. Russell Rich and Harley Cameron had been Rockbank’s best in the game. Elsewhere, Lancefield achieved the upset of the season: a 32-point win over Diggers Rest. The Burras had lost just one game previously, to Riddell, and had won 10 straight games. The Tigers led throughout, but Diggers Rest remained in the game
until the final term. Leading by 17 points at three-quarter time, Lancefield kicked five goals to two in the last to record its best win of the season. It moved the Tigers to seventh with a 6-6 record, less than 5 per cent behind Melton Centrals, giving their finals hopes a major boost. Brent Tuckey was held to three goals for the Burras, while Leonard Clark and Tom Evans were better Diggers Rest players in the defeat.

Darley coach warns of premature celebrations Diving in: Darley’s Drew Edwards and Sunbury’s Jamie Lobb chase a loose ball
Darley coach Rod MacPherson was thinking of the bigger picture as he tried to keep the lid on his team’s most comprehensive performance of the season. Fans piled into the Darley rooms for a raucous rendition of the club song as the Devils celebrated a comprehensive 41-point win against Sunbury. MacPherson kept his post-match address short, telling his group to not over-celebrate the win. The Darley coach has not shied away from being publicly critical of his team after some of its earlier defeats, particularly with regard to inaccurate kicking for goal. “We’re still chasing our tail for the first half of the year and it will take a real effort to get into the top three and be a genuine threat,” MacPherson said. “The club’s got a bit of a habit of getting ahead of itself with social activities. We’re coming off a bye, going into a bye, our annual ball is Friday night coming, and the players have got to balance out what they want from the year. “They enjoy themselves, but without supreme sacrifice you don’t get the result.” Darley forwards Jake Edwards, Dane Grenfell and, in the final quarter, Mark Hanson all defied the poor conditions to produce against Sunbury’s backline. “We were disciplined with the direction of the footy into attack, and we kicked our goals from the top of the goalsquare, which is what you need in conditions like today,” MacPherson said. “We didn’t have a passenger, we kept our concentration and intensity and, particularly in the last quarter,
Marsh seventh after cliffhanger
we controlled the footy. We’re trying to inject a bit more run into the group. “We’ve had a stop-start year with byes and a quirky draw but we don’t go to Ballarat again in the

Bacchus Marsh’s hopes of finals action in Ballarat Netball League A-grade suffered a major blow on Saturday as the Cobras lost to Sebastopol by four goals. The 47-43 defeat leaves Bacchus Marsh (4-7) seventh on the ladder. Sebastopol led from start to finish and held on in the final quarter as Bacchus Marsh rallied from 14 down at the last change. Darley is also running out of chances to turn its season around after visiting Sunbury left with a 31-15 win. Darley started with Olivia Aughton and Elyce Carlyle in defence, the move paying early dividends as the Devils were within six points of the Lions at half-time. But a lack of attacking production left Darley unable to stick with the Lions in the third quarter as Sunbury slogged out a 31-15 win. At Melton Recreation Reserve, Melton South’s winless season continued with a one-goal loss to Redan. In other games, North Ballarat City beat Lake Wendouree 43-34 and East Point beat Ballarat 55-26. In Riddell District Netball League A-grade, Riddell Bombers confirmed their status as the main challenger to Melton Centrals after a five-goal win against Romsey. Centrals (12-0) had the bye and remain top of the league by a game from Riddell (11-1) after the Bombers’ 50-45 win. At Rockbank, visiting Rupertswood moved a step closer to finals with a 50-26 win. In other games, Diggers Rest lost 49-14 to Lancefield, WoodendHesket beat Broadford 38-36 and Macedon beat Wallan 79-21.
Devils’ defence strangles premier Lions By Teo Pellizzeri Any doubts about Darley being a Ballarat Football League premiership contender were dispelled on Saturday when the Devils crushed reigning premiers Sunbury Lions by 41 points. Holding Sunbury to a single goal after half-time puts the Devils squarely back in the contenders bracket after proving their stirring win against Redan a fortnight earlier was not just a one-off. Sunbury left Darley Park with key injuries and a wake-up call, with the door to second spot still ajar after the 12.12 (84) to 6.7 (43) result. North Ballarat City (11-0, 48
points) has a two-game break on top from Sunbury (9-2, 40), with Redan (8-3, 36) and East Point (8-3, 36) ready to capitalise on any further slip-ups. Fifth place is a misleading ladder position for the Devils (7-4, 32), given their consecutive wins against Redan and Sunbury and the lowest losing margin of any team at the hands of the unbeaten North Ballarat City. Jake Edwards and Dane Grenfell were accurate in the heavy conditions early to give Darley the edge in a goal-for-goal first quarter. Sunbury appeared to be getting the upper hand in the second term as a 100-metre penalty took the Lions

‘Jake Edwards and Dane Grenfell were accurate in the heavy conditions early to give Darley the edge.’ end-to-end for a Simon Clarke goal. Scott Lobb kicked a running major of his own straight from the resulting centre bounce. The double-strike put Sunbury up by seven, but the Darley players kept their heads to respond with a 40-metre set shot from Travis Minns. A 15-minute scoreless slog followed before Darley landed crucial
blows in time-on. Grenfell intercepted a Mathew Medcraft handball to kick a goal then Darren Leonard put through a 50-metre set shot with less than a minute before the long break. Casey Nance’s soccer goal put Darley 19 points up before passages of play that would rob Sunbury of two key men. Dale Ciunik was carried off with a neck injury in the 13-minute mark, then Pat Carriss suffered a thigh injury in the first passage of play after the 10-minute delay for treatment of Ciunik. Darley dominated the last 10 minutes of the 40-minute third
quarter but could score only points, taking a lead of 18 to the last change. But any chance of a Sunbury rally was ended two minutes into the final term when Tate Stone’s raking kick forward was marked with the flight and converted for a goal by Grenfell. Mark Hanson lifted to kick two final-quarter goals, while Medcraft, one of Sunbury’s best, kicked a running goal late in the day to ensure his team avoided a goalless second half. Stone was named Darley’s best along with Shane Page and Drew Edwards, while Shaun Deckert held Sunbury spearhead Clarke to a single goal. Nathan Jackel turned in a typically hard-running and physical display.
Last-gasp miss hands Calder win By Teo Pellizzeri James Sicily’s pain was Calder Cannons’ gain on Saturday as the Keilor junior hit the post with an after-the-siren kick that left the Cannons winners by a point in TAC Cup. Calder overcame a second slow start in as many games to win 12.20 (92) to 13.13 (91) at Highgate Reserve. The loss put a dent in Western Jets’ top-four hopes. They sit in sixth
(6-1-6), a game and a half behind fourth-placed Murray Bushrangers (8-5). Calder (6-7) remains ninth but is only half a game behind a trio of teams, the Jets, Sandringham Dragons and Northern Knights (all 6-1-6). Western kicked with the windfavoured end first on Saturday and opened a 22-point quarter-time lead before Calder fought back into the contest with 4.7 to 2.2 in the second term.
Sicily kicked three goals in the third quarter, but goals at crucial times to Jake Owen and Peter Wright kept the Cannons within 11 at the last change. In the fourth, Calder fired to sweep to a seven-point lead by the mid-stages, with Sicily giving the Jets hope by kicking his fourth to put Western within two points late in the game. But after earning a free kick moments before the siren, Sicily put his shot for a potential match-
inbrief Basketball Melton made it lucky 13 on Saturday with a 10-point win against Casey Cavaliers in Big V men’s division 2. The 83-73 win and favourable results in other games means Melton has secured the minor premiership with a round to play. Melton is on top with 13 wins and four losses, ahead of Pakenham (11-6) and Keilor (10-6). Jeff Crowe scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds on Saturday, while Shane Moroney (16) and Maverick Clissold (15) were other top scorers. Melton will finish its home-and-away campaign against Shepparton Gators in an 8pm tip-off at Melton Indoor Recreation Centre on Saturday. Melton’s youth league 2 men lost 57-53 against Casey to fall to sixth.
winning goal into the post from 40 metres. Melton duo Lachlan Hickey and Mark Orr kicked goals, as did Darley pair Billy Myers and Brett Bewley. Hickey and Myers were named among the Jets’ best. Western plays North Ballarat Rebels (12th, 2-11) at Eureka Stadium on Sunday, July 28. For more action shots from Michael Copp’s gallery, go to meltonweekly.com.au
Soccer Melton remains a comfortable leader of FFV state league 5 west after a 3-0 win against Spring Hills at the weekend. Melton’s 34 points keeps it seven clear of second-placed Laverton Park (27). The Melton women’s team lost 1-0 to Keilor Park on Sunday.
CHFL Gordon continued its climb up the table by beating Ballan by 37 points on Saturday. Gordon trailed by five points at half-time but burst to the lead with five unanswered thirdquarter goals. Gordon eventually won 13.20 (99) to 9.8 (62). Daniel King kicked five goals and Ash Munari was best-on-ground, while Josh Lee and Adam Turley were among the better Gordon players. Mark Williams booted four goals four Ballan, while Jarryd Graham was best in the defeat. Gordon (7-5) is seventh on the ladder and Ballan (3-9) sits 14th.
Space to run: Melton’s Lachlan Hickey powers away from Calder’s Jake Lever.
Western Jets rue another tight one that got away By Teo Pellizzeri WESTERN Jets are continuing their record of turning in tight finishes. Saturday’s one-point loss to the Cannons was Western’s eighth game of the TAC Cup season decided by under two goals. Although the Jets have built something of a tradition for winning
close games, Saturday brought their second loss of the season by less than a goal. “It wasn’t a great one for us, another one of those close ones and it unfortunately didn’t go our way,” coach Torin Baker said. “From our point of view, that game was a real opportunity missed to really force our way into the top four.
“Today was probably one of the days when we didn’t defend as well as we have over the last four weeks. “We didn’t put enough pressure on the ball carrier, nor were we good in covering players around the contest. “In the end that was a major reason why Calder were able to get the game on their terms.” Baker praised Keilor junior James
Melton Centrals let a winning opportunity slip on Sunday when Jacana pulled off its first victory of the north west division 2 season at the Blues’ expense. Jacana won 4.10 (34) to Melton Centrals 3.6 (24) at Jacana Reserve. Krysty-Lee Hardy, Linda Morren and Tara Crisp were Centrals’ best in the defeat.
Sicily for his performance and forgave him his miss after the siren. “He was willing the team over the line off his own back and very nearly did that,” Baker said. “Many a player wouldn’t have even made the distance into the wind from where he kicked it from and he’s kicked it nearly post high.” — with Lance Jenkinson
Essendon will return from bye weekend with a Sunday showdown away at Casey Fields against Casey Scorpions. Weekend results left Essendon 12th of 14 teams in the league. But the Bombers (4-8) are only a win and 9 per cent behind eighth-placed Northern Blues (5-7). Casey gave Essendon an 83-point hiding when the teams met at Windy Hill in April.
