Parks to close for sewer works
Safety focus for Brunswick
BY ALANA SCHETZER
CCTV cameras, street lighting and preventing violence against women are to be discussed at a Brunswick safety forum next week. The community safety meeting follows the rape and murder of 29-yearold Jill Meagher in September. Ms Meagher’s death motivated tens of thousands to take part in two antiviolence marches on Sydney Road. The forum will be hosted by federal Wills MP Kelvin Thomson and Brunswick MP Jane Garrett, with police, local council and community leaders invited to speak. A White Ribbon Australia representative will speak about how the community can help prevent violence against women. Mr Thomson said the the aim was to bring the community together with the “common goal of making Brunswick a safer place’’. “This forum will give people in the community the opportunity to voice any concerns they may have,” he said. The forum will be held at Brunswick Town Hall from 7pm on November 19. – Chris Hingston

PARTS of Alphington Park and Coate Park will be closed until 2015 for a Melbourne Water sewer upgrade that will begin at the end of 2013. The water authority needs to replace or repair a 1.7-kilometre section of sewer, which is almost 100 years old and in poor condition. Melbourne Water project spokesman Phil Corluka said the areas would be used as shaft sites for tunnel-boring equipment. South Alphington Fairfield Civic Association spokesman Jeff Katz said the partial closure would ‘‘certainly’’ be an issue for residents. He said he would await more information about how much space would be blocked before making further comment. Some trees will be removed or trimmed. Mr Corluka said there were plans to avoid heritage-listed trees. ‘‘All tree removal requires council permission and ... any trees and vege-
‘All tree removal requires council permission’ tation that are removed will be replaced with additional trees, shrubs and grasses,’’ he said. Melbourne Water has opened public consultation on the three-year project, which will work on sewers in Alphington and Kew, including Latrobe Golf Club. About 85,000 properties will be affected once construction works begin about 21 metres underground. Mr Corluka said the works to the original brick-lined sewer would ‘‘virtually eliminate’’ the risk of sewer spills and leaks. Two public consultations will be held this month: November 20 at Latrobe Golf Club, Alphington, and November 26 at Fairfield Canoe Club, Fairfield, both from 6pm.
