Princes Freeway closure As a part of the Williams Landing Project, sections of the Princes Freeway will be temporarily closed at Point Cook on Monday, 11th February from 10.00pm to 5.00am. This will enable the project team to safely install a pedestrian footbridge across the freeway, from the new Williams Landing railway station to Wallace Avenue in Point Cook. Trucks and children don’t mix BY BENJAMIN MILLAR TRUCK-PLAGUED Moore Street will become a greater heavy-vehicle magnet following Regional Rail Link roadworks, say irate Footscray residents. The residents are also livid at not being told sooner about road changes they say will cut off access to a local primary school and make a busy intersection even more dangerous. The Regional Rail Link Authority has revealed plans to close access from Shelley Street to Hopkins Street and cut off right-hand turns into Cowper Street as part of works associated with rebuilding the Hopkins Street bridge. Resident Adrian Basso said extending a right-hand turn lane from Hopkins Street into Moore Street is an open invitation for trucks to increase

Shattered gnomes a nod to Taliban n a back road to the old family home the sight was guaranteed to gladden any heart. Nearing the crest of the hill, the road curves slightly around a rocky outcrop. Now look up and . . . there, atop a big granite boulder, a greeting party of half a dozen gnomes straddling a gateway to the Shire of Mount Alexander. They never ceased to put a smile on my face. Each time I returned home the wee concrete folk were steadfast in their welcome. Who cemented them there in a spot so precise they could be seen only on entering the shire, not leaving? And then visible only for a split second before the road drops away to the valley below. Many people who travelled that road never spied them. Some shire folk we told to look out for them thought we were mad. Then one day I wound up the hill and the gnomes were not just gone, but massacred. The bloody red stumps of trousers identifiable as belonging to the two largest ones and a little disembodied head were all that remained. I let out an involuntary cry. It was shocking, as much for the malice aforethought as the effort it must have taken to get up there just to tear a little whimsy from the world. For some weeks after, I took an alternative route. Eventually, common sense put me back on track and I’d near gnome man’s land wishing hard to find they’d been replaced. Today their concrete stumps are barely distinguishable from the granite. And I wonder whether they were ever there at all.



NICOLA Roxon’s resignation from the federal seat of Gellibrand has sparked a frenzy of speculation as to her likely replacement in the trophy Labor seat. Ms Roxon announced on Saturday that she would step down immediately as attorneygeneral and retire from politics at the September 14 election. The bombshell capped off a torrid week in federal politics in which Prime Minister Julia Gillard set the election date and former Labor MP Craig Thomson was charged with 150 counts of fraud over the alleged misuse of union credit cards. Ms Roxon quashed suggestions that her retirement, along with that of Senate leader Chris Evans, was a case of rats deserting a sinking Labor ship. “I have always wanted to represent the community at 200 per cent, but I didn’t think I could continue that,” she told the Weekly this week. “I’m looking forward to being able to spend a bit more time with my daughter [Rebecca] while she is still in primary school.” Ms Roxon said she was proud of her 15 years in Parliament and Labor’s legacy while in power.

Ms Roxon, 45, first stood for election in 1988, replacing former treasurer Ralph Willis. Parachuted into the role by Labor heavyweight Senator Stephen Conroy, Ms Roxon acknowledged the “natural” wish for a local candidate but side-stepped the sticky question of who might take the country’s second-safest seat. Much of the speculation has focused upon Senator David Feeney, likely to lose his senate spot at the next election, and ex-Victorian Premier Steve Bracks. Local Labor party figures have also begun jockeying for the role. Ms Roxon said local party members would have the opportunity to put forward a candidate but noted there were also “talented” people in the wider community. “I don’t think as the outgoing member I should be interfering in the process,” she said. “Because I have still got another seven months left, at the moment I am focused on finishing my time.” Ms Roxon categorically ruled out a return to politics, scuttling suggestions she might be eyeing Marsha Thomson’s state seat of Footscray in a play for Labor’s leadership in Victoria. “I have had a very good time and had a lot of support, but this is the end of my political life.”

It’s official: ears under assault BY BENJAMIN MILLAR YARRAVILLE residents continue to be hammered by truck noise that would be unacceptable on new roads, a report reveals. Air pollution and noise testing by the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) reveal average weekday noise levels in Francis Street are up to 78 decibels — 15 decibels higher than VicRoads’ guidelines for new roads. The results have been released at the halfway point of a year-long EPA monitoring program, which has come under fire from residents for failing to measure air pollution in the area’s worst-affected locations. EPA director Matt Vincent said the results showed air pollution at low levels in Francis Street, a claim denied by the Maribyrnong Truck Action Group (MTAG). Group president Samantha McArthur said the EPA was measuring away from the most heavily hit areas and using “outdated” pollution level guidelines. “We know this area has the highest hospitalisation rate for respiratory illness in children in the state,” she said. “We would like to see the EPA become something other than a

rubber stamp for the state government; they are using these results as a way to maintain the status quo.” Mr Vincent said the EPA report found “concerning noise levels” caused by 5800 trucks using Francis Street each weekday. “What we found was that noise levels were high enough to impact residents during the week but were less at the weekend [during curfew].” VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said long-term solutions would be reviewed once the EPA completed its 12-month testing program. Interim initiatives “to balance the needs of industry and residents” include industry education, targeted enforcement and reviewing on-road signage. Ms Liew said truck curfews, traffic lights and driver education in the past decade had led to fewer trucks on Francis Street during curfew hours. “VicRoads is also part of a truck curfew review committee chaired by the City of Maribyrnong, which is reviewing the operation of truck curfews and considering some shortto medium-term options in the innerwest.’’ Ms Liew echoed Roads Minister

Greens MP Colleen Hartland said the EPA had “got it wrong” in downplaying air-quality problems in Francis Street. “Evidence in our neighbourhoods is

that diesel pollution is a problem,” she said. “The Westgate ramps truck bypass is a shovel-ready solution. We just need the government to get on with it.”

But Maribyrnong Truck Action Group president Samantha McArthur questioned how much of an impact the new project would have. ‘‘They expect it will take 2000 trucks off the inner-west roads a day, but what about the other 18,000?’’

Holes, gravel make work a bumpy ride BY BENJAMIN MILLAR FOOTSCRAY’S station area is a minefield for residents with a disability, with a mixed bag of provisions for the visually or mobility-impaired. Disability campaigners Michael Merrett and Brian Caccianiga, who use motorised scooters, and Bianca Nolan, who has a vision impairment, travelled through Footscray last Thursday to assess accessibility during Regional Rail Link construction work. Mr Merrett said disability access at the station was good but the area surrounding the station posed problems. “On our appraisal around Footscray station, I noticed there was a lot of construction work going on and some of the footpaths were very bumpy.” Pedestrian access across Nicholson Street at the intersection of Napier Street was deemed a failure and dangerous to cross, especially for vision-impaired people. Despite a sign directing pedestrians where to cross there is no zebra crossing, traffic signal or

signs warning cars that it is now a pedestrian crossing. Footpath and road surfaces on McNab Avenue were found to be poor, with piles of gravel, crumbling edges and a zebra crossing that ends halfway across the street. Irving Street footpath was found to be poor quality, uneven and hole-riddled. Mr Merrett said accessibility was about urban design that was universally accessible and benefited everyone including senior citizens, and people with wheelchairs, and disabilities. “It is about creating a fair, equal and safe and continuous path to travel with no obstacles. This includes footpaths, business and public transport.” Mr Merrett noted there was an accessible route 82 tram stop nearby, but no low-floor trams servicing the stop. “The government will say they are futureproofing, but if you are building an accessible tram stop you need to be putting low-floor trams through,’’ he said. Rail Link Authority (RRLA) asking that it fix the problems identified. RRLA spokesman Tim Holmes said the station upgrade was phased to ensure minimal disruption to station operations and accessibility through the station precinct. “Every effort is made to ensure temporary

changes to access are compliant with the disability standards for accessible public transport,” he said. Temporary changes include stairs and a ramp from the Irving Street forecourt to a temporary bridge connecting with the existing pedestrian bridge, and a ramp onto Platform 1.

Movement at the station, regardless BY BENJAMIN MILLAR FOOTSCRAY commuters must wait until at least mid-next year before construction works at the railway station are complete. A major overhaul of the station as part of the $5.3 billion Regional Rail Link project will take about 18 months as the rail corridor is widened for two new tracks. RRL project spokesman Tim Holmes said the construction works were expected to be completed in mid-2014, with the Regional Rail Link to launch in 2016. “All platforms are currently in use with no impact on services and changes have been made to the station to enable it to remain functional while works are under way.” Questions have been raised about demolition of two-year-old infrastructure, including stairs and the northern forecourt, built when the $14.7 million William Cooper Bridge was opened by the Labor government in 2010. The original footbridge redesign was heavily criticised by commuters for being of ‘‘poor quality, dangerous in wet conditions and lacking

escalator access’’. As opposition transport spokesman, Terry Mulder (now the Minister) said rebuilding the footbridge would cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Mr Holmes said the demolition was forced by the need to widen the rail corridor for two new tracks and platforms and to build escalators and ramps with new canopies over the station entrances. “The work also includes creating a new public space on Irving Street with landscaping, seating and lighting.” The Regional Rail Link Authority refuses to reveal the cost of the station rebuild, pointing only to the $835 million budget for the entire Footscray-to-Deer Park work package. Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese and Mr Mulder visited the banks of the Maribyrnong River last week to inspect work on a new bridge being built for the project. Mr Albanese said the new “superstructure” would extend for nearly a kilometre from South Kensington to Footscray, spanning both the river and the existing rail track. Mr Mulder said the works were being carefully undertaken to avoid damaging the heritage-listed rail bridge.

Teachers’ union faces court action

THE state government has turned to the Federal Court in a bid to thwart a statewide teachers’ strike planned for next Thursday. A spokesman for Finance Minister Robert Clark said the government on Monday sought a court injunction against planned industrial action by the Australian Education Union and Community and Public Sector Union. The government wants to quash the planned strike and bans affecting school camps, excursions, school fetes and sporting activities. “The issuing of these proceedings follows the unions’ failure to call off industrial action despite being given ample warning of the government’s intentions to issue legal proceedings if the unions persisted in their industrial action,” he said. Education Department negotiators met AEU officials last week, with “productive” talks continuing this week. The AEU is pushing for a 12.6 per cent pay rise over three years. The government claims this would cost taxpayers $13 billion, but refused to release details on how it reached this figure. AEU state president Meredith Peace said the

PREPARATIONS for the Yarraville Festival are at full steam ahead of its arrival in the vibrant village this month. A FOOTSCRAY-based association has delivered dozens of youngsters their first taste of basketball. The Westside Basketball Association, at Whitten Oval Stadium, has put about 30 young players through their paces as part of an introductory form of the game, Aussie Hoops. Coach Kat Clancy says Aussie Hoops teaches skills to boys and girls of all abilities aged up to 12 so that they can then take up the full game. “These are introductory sessions for kids interested in playing basketball. They use drills to give them the basic skills and confidence to take with them.” About 30 participants have signed up and new members are welcome.

Circling bats signify festival high point BY BENJAMIN MILLAR A CAPACITY crowd of 10,000 turned out on a perfect Sunday afternoon for Footscray’s fourth Laneway Festival. Norwegian romantics Kings of Convenience cheerfully welcomed the day in, making the most of the early main stage slot. Flying the flag for Footscray, The Very West winners Pataphysics, picked up a number of new fans with their jazz-licked, politically charged soulful hip-hop. Brooklyn’s The Men turned in a pummelling performance while back on the main stage Twerps received a rousing homecoming welcome for their sunny pop hooks. Accompanied by cello, Julia Holter’s ethereal synth-driven soundscapes afforded a pleasant afternoon interlude. Real Estate’s understated melodic command was well received and a charming offset to the gleeful guitar-driven mess of Cloud Nothings. ric Papaluca’s earliest memories of video games involve waking on Christmas Day to unwrap an original PlayStation console. The phenomenon began in the early ’70s when Pong, the first commercially successful video game, was released worldwide.Thee addictive simulated table tennis game me was launched in 1972 at arcades and nd pubs and soon made its way into millions of homes via the Atari system.


Jonathan Strugnell, a lecturer in animation for film and games at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) in Melbourne’s CBD, remembers the game fondly. ‘‘When I was a kid, computer games of course were just barely arriving, so I’ve played most of them,’’ says the 45-year-old Yarraville resident. ‘‘I remember Pong. I remember Space Invaders.’’ Strugnell says gaming has always been a big part of his life. ‘‘But some of my gaming is not based on computers. It’s the old-fashioned old-school pen and paper style. Computers were just an extension of my dictum.’’ Strugnell believes games have grown into a popular pastime because they offer something for everyone. ‘‘It’s genre-based,’’ he explains. ‘‘The first-person shooter are the people who want the adrenaline rush. The role-playing strategy are people who like planning and its simulation warfare, so being a general. The adventure-based games are people who like a story. ‘‘So games can be a safe way of experiencing thrills. Like going on a rollercoaster. You can go and shoot things and blow things up and you get the rush, but it’s also safe because you’re in front of a computer.’’ Strugnell is teaching the next generation of games makers and he describes Australia as experimental and adventurous in creation. Australia, he says, doesn’t create the A level games that America does and instead has found a niche in innovation. For the most part, he teaches students how to make computer games and films digitally, similar to Shrek and Avatar. AIE offers a two-year course specialising in practicality in an attempt to simulate a real-life studio. So can games get the better of some? ‘‘That is definitely a danger,’’ Strugnell concedes. ‘‘They are psychologically addictive to certain personalities. ‘‘It’s something we encounter. We notice some students don’t do so well because they have literally become addicted to a game. I’ve had that a few times over the years.’’ Strugnell says a passion for games usually starts in childhood. For some it fizzles out, and for others it becomes a lifelong thing. ‘‘Some people, they grow out of it. It’s just a childhood thing and when they stop playing other sorts of games they stop playing computer games ... other things take over. The sort of people who continue are usually people who like the adrenaline rush, can’t go skiing, and want some of tthe he ssame a e buzz.’’ am

East Keilor resident Scott Pearce, 42, is part of the generation that never grew up. In his 20s, Pearce started playing Warhammer Fantasy, a tabletop war game with mass scale armies of soldiers, dragons and mythical creatures. A significant part of the game involves assembling the kits and painting models. For some it outweighs the actual playing. Pearce has collected nearly every army that the manufacturer has made. ‘‘I love the building and the creativity,’’ he says. ‘‘The gaming is fun. I used to play a lot more than I do now. But I like the ability to create my own versions of what it is.’’ On a typical Wednesday, Pearce, a chef, can be found at the Games Workshop store in Ascot Vale, where almost a dozen people of various ages come to hang out. He spends hours on end, up to eight in a sitting, immersed in his hobby. ‘‘I use the shop as my games base. It’s my escape,’’ he says. ‘‘I used to do parachuting and motorbike riding. It’s one of those things I can do rain, hail, or shine, and it’s very social.’’ Do people find his obsession weird? ‘‘Hell yeah. It’s one of those things where people have a preconceived idea. Sometimes they change their mind once they’ve seen it. Others still see it as playing with toys.’’ Sitting alongside Pearce is 16-year-old schoolkid Tyler Watson, who is relatively new to the hobby. Watson says he prefers Warhammer to console games because you can meet people and make friends. He prefers the preparation and the painting to the actual game. ‘‘The painting takes quite a while. You put your heart and soul into it. You’re proud of what the model looks like.’’ Watson can already see his hobby turning into a lifelong obsession. ‘‘One day I was just walking down the street and saw the shop and came in, did a test model, and sort of fell in love with it. That was it for me. Hooked ever since.’’ EL



Williamstown resident Stuart Lamble also looked to games when seeking a social outlet. Two years ago he was living in Auckland and trying to meet people. ‘‘I needed something to get out and meet people and this was the most expedient option.’’ When he moved back to Melbourne he joined Cafe Games, a board games club based in Melbourne. About 70 people meet regularly in the CBD to catch up and play games. The 37-year-old’s favourite is Ticket to Ride: Europe, a railway-themed board game. ‘‘I don’t mind playing a game and losing as long as everyone’s played well,’’ he says. ‘‘I work in IT in a small company and see the same five to six people every day. It’s nice to get out and meet people.’’ Strugnell says people play games for a variety of reasons including boredom and interacting with others. He plays both PC and console games regularly, and even dressed as game character Solid Snake from Metal Gear in a Guinness World Records attempt by AIE this year to have the most number of game characters in a single room. ‘‘If you’re playing a computer game, you’re part of a story. And with quite a lot of games you can direct the story yourself. Essentially, it’s being in a movie.’’ Perhaps the strongest pointer to Australia’s fascination with games was last year’s announcement that the Penny Arcade Expo will be held at the Melbourne Showgrounds this July. Usually held in Seattle and Boston, it celebrates console gamers, computer gamers and tabletop gamers. It will be the first time the expo will be held outside the US. The three-day festival includes concerts inspired by game culture, panels on game topics, and tournaments. Eric Papaluca bought a three-day pass and will take along his PC, paying extra for security staff to watch over it. One of the more interesting aspects of the festival is Omegathon, a tournament consisting of a group of randomly selected fans competing for a grand prize. Papaluca hopes to be one of the lucky dozen selected. Asked how long he believes his games fascination will last, he seems fixed on it clicking over. ‘‘Forever, because it’s what I’m best at. It’s like my skill and my hobby.’’ I

almost enters the ‘too cluttered’ category. The menu is large but easy to navigate. Starters include meaty pork spring rolls (eight for $8.90) or classic Golden Bags (five for $9.90), which are fried, wrapped chubby parcels of prawn, noodles and herbs that are meaty and delicious. A serving of warm roti bread ($5) with a side of satay sauce is at once comforting. The rest of the menu is broken into salads, soups, curries and stir fries. In the curries section, you can choose the main component of the dish: meat (chicken, beef or pork), seafood (prawns, calamari or fish) or veg-

etarian, and then choose the style of curry you’d like, from classics such as red, green or yellow curries. We chose a green beef curry ($17.90). A beautiful ceramic bowl filled with loads of strips of beef and vegetables arrived in a sauce that was well-spiced. I was left thinking I should have asked for hot rather than medium, as it was a little soft on the chilli. You can order mild, medium, Western hot or ‘Thai hot’. We also ordered a stir-fry of chicken and lemongrass, garlic and vegetables ($17.90), which had no chilli — perfect for children — and was wellbalanced in flavour and full of well cooked meat and vegetables. Thai Angels is great if you’re just starting to explore Thai food as the flavours and spices are tempered for Western palates, but still there’s an authenticity to this place and a very friendly service.

So they’re 40: what’s the fuss about? Middle-aged, wealthy: should we care? asks Myke Bartlett here’s something symbolic in the sprawling mess that is Judd Apatow’s latest comedy. Just as its lead couple are skidding rudderless into their fifth decade, This Is 40 drifts across narrative threads that never cohere into an actual story. Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann) are approaching middle-age and wondering if they’re supposed to be happy. Pete is running his own record company, but only running it into the ground. Debbie owns a small fashion boutique but feels desperately short of glamour. Part of the problem is that Apatow is not trying to tell us anything new. His definitive title suggests we’re all supposed to chuckle along in recognition, rather than reel in astonishment. Similarly, he seems afraid to make his audience think too deeply for fear of unsettling them. The message is

clear: everything is OK. As such, it’s hard to invest in the couple’s despair when we know they’re merely imagining their problems. It’s also hard to care about their hardships when they’re zipping about in new BMWs and living in a mansion. The biggest problem is that it just isn’t funny enough. Largely improvised, the film is only as good as its performers. The best that can be said about Rudd and Mann is that they’re likeable and, well, adequate. There’s no doubt that Apatow has made a film that feels very true – for him, at least. But those of us who aren’t rich, 40 and American might wonder what all the fuss is about.

State Government’s Promise on Stamp Duty Cuts

Australia’s new home for property

Victorian home buyers currently pay the highest stamp duty rates of any state in Australia. Therefore the real estate industry has welcomed the commitment by the new Coalition State Government to cut stamp duty for all eligible first home buyers. Mr Baillieu promises that existing rates will be trimmed by 20 per cent from July 1 next year under his plan and by a further 10 per cent in each following year of a Coalition government. Many agree that the overall 50 per cent cut for first home buyers will go a long way to addressing affordability for first home buyers and bring Victorian rates in line with other states across Australia.

The new government has also pledged to maintain the current first home buyers grant and bonus for new homes. This means that as of 1 July 2011 the first home buyer of an established home with a value of under $600,000 will be entitled to a 20 per cent cut to stamp duty and the $7,000 First Home Buyer Grant.

A life of pleasure and Payne Michelle Payne has unbridled enthusiasm for her job as a leading female jockey, writes Rebecca Miller ichelle Payne is one of 10 children, eight of whom, including herself, are or have been jockeys. The Essendon resident says a love for the horse racing industry has always been in her family’s blood. ‘‘I’m from a racing family and have ridden all my life. I left school in Ballarat at 15, which was also when I had my first race at Ballarat racecourse and won,’’ Michelle says. ‘‘I couldn’t have achieved that without support from my family, especially my dad who’s also my trainer.’’ Michelle, 27, has been a professional jockey for 11 years and, until a recent fall stopped her training, she devoted all her time to her career. ‘‘Each week I travel about 1800 kilometres around Victoria for various races. I ride almost every day and three to four times a week I’m up at 3.15am for track work.’’ Despite her injury, Michelle hopes to make a full recovery then ride for one more year and


contest next year’s Cox Plate or Melbourne Cup. ‘‘I love horses, the racing industry and, of course winning! After all the effort involved, crossing the finish line makes it all worth it. ’’ The life of a jockey is far from easy with Michelle constantly watching her diet and sweating in a sauna or bath to shed weight for races. She says professional jockeys —male and female— have to weigh 50-59 kilograms. ‘‘I think I’ll retire in a couple of years to have kids. Horse racing is a dangerous sport. Many women retire younger to raise a family.’’ Michelle’s career highlights include riding for Bart Cummings and in England, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Mauritius and New Zealand. ‘‘Winning my first Group 1 for Bart then riding that horse in the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup in 2009, was a real highlight.’’ For young females interested in her career she says : ‘‘Work hard and never expect too much.’’

We were able to display it at two totally different venues, and it came as no surprise when the bold shape of the hot version of the Audi A7 passed the look-at-me tests with flying colours. High school formals are major social occasions where showing your ownership of the latest and greatest is important to many people. The new Audi S7 chauffeured by my partner Julie transported her nephew in fine style. Julie’s car, the just launched Audi S7 coupe, appeared near the top of the list of star automotive attractions. The first time around we had the Audi for only that single evening, but we’ve just been able to spend a week in it for further evaluation. Again, we found it to be a real star in the styling stakes. We took it for an evening cruise to one of our favourite cafes. The number of people who stopped and looked over the Audi coupe would have made its designers extremely pleased.

Rams’ slinger shuts the gate BY LANCE JENKINSON NEWPORT Rams prodigy Griffin Weir strangled the life out of Werribee Giants in a Baseball Victoria summer league division 2 all-west affair at KC White Reserve on Sunday. Weir threw a shut-out over nine innings to keep the Rams’ buffer at the top of the ladder intact and almost certainly douse the Giants’ finals hopes as their hot streak came to an end after four wins to start the new year. The young Rams are on a streak of their own. The 8-0 whitewash was their sixth win in a row and they’re unbeaten since November. They head the queue for the automatic promotion spot that comes with finishing on top. ‘‘That’s what everyone is playing for,’’ Rams assistant coach Gavin Young told the Weekly. Weir was the talk of the dugout on Sunday. Bowler’s guile bamboozles Bulldogs BY LANCE JENKINSON FOOTSCRAY Edgewater laboured with the bat on day one against a Jonathan Fagg-led FitzroyDoncaster attack in Victorian Premier Cricket at the Merv Hughes Oval on Saturday. The Bulldogs could manage only a slow-burn 181 off 83.1 overs as Fagg nagged with his line and length to pick up 5-39 in 18 damaging overs. Bulldogs coach Barry Neivandt told the Weekly it was a tough day at the office for his batsmen. ‘‘They battled hard, but you have to give credit to Jonathan Fagg, who bowled really well and was swinging the ball terrifically,’’ he said. ‘‘An honest toiler, he bowled beautifully and, good luck to him — to our dismay of course.’’ The Bulldogs were without star opener Wes Robinson. The WA recruit had played state second XI cricket during the week and tweaked a hamstring. While it was not considered serious, the Dogs

were taking no risks with Robinson, who will return to the line-up this week to replace Victorian Bushrangers-bound all-rounder John Hastings. . YARRAVILLE-Footscray has sewn up the Bowls Victoria division 1 section 2 minor premiership, but the team from Francis Street is nowhere near content. The Combines edged out cross-town rivals Footscray Park-Rosamond by five shots in the local derby on Saturday to seal the No.1 finals ranking, but skip Wayne Roberts knows that first place counts for little when the action hots up in March. ‘‘Yeah, I’m pleased; I didn’t think we’d get it so soon,’’ was his reaction to having top spot under wraps, before adding: ‘‘We could finish six games in front and it’s not going to count for much. ‘‘All it does is give us a home final. We don’t get a second chance, so if we don’t win that first final we’re out. Doesn’t matter who we play, we’ve got to produce the goods on the day.’’ Roberts was not overly thrilled with the way his team competed in the derby. He admitted his side was lucky to get away with the close-fought victory. ‘‘Happy to win, but we didn’t play that well,’’ he said. ‘‘Give Footscray Park Rosamond credit, they did. ‘‘Two [rink] wins and a draw, but they were all tight. One rink won by two, one went down by one, one played a draw and I won by four. ‘‘It was very close. ‘‘I gave them a spray after the game. If you don’t turn up and do the right things and play the right way, that’s what can happen.’’ For the most part, the Combines have monstered opposition this summer, regularly picking up three- and four-rink

victories. Significantly, the improvement has come from within the club, not via the cheque book. ‘‘I’ve changed a lot of personnel,’’ Roberts said. ‘‘There’s six to seven people playing now who didn’t play in the finals last year. ‘‘Most of them have come from within our own club. ‘‘We haven’t gone out and recruited a lot of players into the side; they’ve sort of come from our seconds side and stepped up and that’s what you want.’’ The Combines are a settled unit. Their four skips — Roberts, Alan Dove, James Pearce and Ray Coulter — will remain unchanged. ‘‘They’re in cement, so they’ll be the four skips in the finals,’’ Roberts said. The Eagles produced a spectacular bowling display to have the visiting Monders out for 94 in what must have felt like 46.3 hellish overs. ‘‘We didn’t do much different to what we’d been doing in all the other games,’’ player-coach Tim McRae told the Weekly after his side wrapped up the first innings points. ‘‘The boys bowled well, kept the pressure on the opposition and the wickets kept tumbling.’’ The Eagles had 29 overs left in the day to seize the first innings points. They made it in the last over to finish overnight on 4-98. Adam Yates (38) and Matthew Harrison (27) made the bulk of the runs. Wicketkeeper Daniel Torre (15) and Michael O’Sullivan (seven) will be at the crease when play resumes on the second day. Injury saps Falcons’ verve BY LANCE JENKINSON CITY West Falcons will mount a Victorian Netball League premiership defence without two of their most experienced campaigners. The Falcons head into tonight’s preseason opener minus key bookends Kathleen Knott and Peta Fay. Knott, one of the VNL’s most feared sharpshooters, will be out for the season with a serious knee injury. Fay, the detonator of opposition attack in the goalkeeper post, is pregnant and will spend the season on the sidelines. Falcons coach Marg Lind said it would give the reigning champions a chance to blood some of their exciting youngsters. ‘‘It’ll be a bit of a test for us this year. We’ve brought a few of the young ones up.’’ Undoubtedly the biggest void to fill is that left by Knott, who was the main component of the VNL’s top offence last season. Eight-time winner sets sights high THE usual howling easterly made for tough racing in the Footscray Cycling Club’s criteriums in Hoppers Crossing on Saturday. One man who relished the tricky conditions was the in-form Dom Dudkiewicz, who made it eight wins in eight A grade races. Dudkiewicz, whose form has been impeccable this season, has been racking up the kilometres in an effort to be ready for a full season of racing. The talented rider hopes his efforts might be rewarded with a spot in a national team. ‘‘I’m going to give next week’s club

championship my best go, especially since I’ve never won it,’’ he said, ‘‘but my real goal is the national road series.’’ In B grade, Travis Small added a new trick to his repertoire by winning the bunch sprint narrowly from Trevor Perry and Matt Johnson. In C grade, Steve Bodey looked the goods the whole race, including two breaks and success in the bunch sprint to beat Leo Brunato and Antonio Marino in convincing fashion. One of the newer riders, Michael Albanese, took the D grade bunch sprint.
