Cuts won’t add fuel to fires BY SARAH HARRIS

OUR COVER: Riddells Creek cricketer Jack Redford pads up for a match. Story: Page 9. Picture: Marco De Luca

You can look out the window and see it growing.” Mr Gilmore said that just as fire services and emergency personnel were preparing for the season ahead the community should be, too. “There are three components to our fire problem: the weather, the fuel and the topography. The fuel is the only thing that people can change, but it’s the thing they quite often ignore. “People don’t always take the steps around their homes they should. Now is the time to get your whippersnipper out and start working around the house. We want the community to realise they are a very vital part of this equation which is going to keep them safe. ‘‘A lot of the survival we see in major events is the community helping each other.”

PICTURE: MATTHEW FURNEAUX

MACEDON Ranges residents’ security during the coming fire season will not be compromised by state government budget cuts, a senior CFA officer has pledged. CFA district 2 operations manager Mark Gilmore said the $41 million the Baillieu government sliced from the fire service would not reduce its effectiveness on the ground. “At this stage we have no reduction in the amount of fire trucks we have or the amount of people we have,” Mr Gilmore said ahead of a pre-season briefing of senior regional emergency services personnel at Gisborne. “For us, the budget cuts have been something we have been able to manage without

lessening the service to Victorians. That’s our bottom line.” About 20 incident controllers, senior planners, operational managers from the DSE, CFA, MFB and Victoria Police gathered in Gisborne on Thursday for the first briefing on the 2012-13 fire season. Authorities are preparing for an average season, but Mr Gilmore said this was no guarantee that extreme conditions would not arise. “Unfortunately for us, we cannot get anyone who can tell us there are not going to be two horrible dry weeks during summer. “I don’t want to say it’s the worst year in 20 years. But even in a normal year if you get that terrible fortnight you can still be in real trouble. “We just don’t know how bad it is going to be. But I do know the fuel is going to be there.

Pets in the pews From dogs and cats to mice and rats, residents can bring their pets to church to be blessed. St Mary’s Anglican Church in Woodend has its annual pet service at 10.30am this Sunday. Rector Malcolm Thomas (pictured blessing two-year-old Jordan’s dog) said pets in cages or on leads were welcome. ‘‘Even if you’ve not got a pet you’re more than welcome to come and join in the fun and come for morning tea in our new hall. Holly and Alexina [the church dog and cat] will love to see as many new faces and their pets as possible.’’ The service runs for about an hour and will be followed by a morning tea in the Norma Richardson Hall. A cut above: Katherine Deverell sharpens her skills for her new challenge in Hobart this month.

Wife, husband cut to the chase BY SARAH HARRIS IT’S only taken 30 years, but finally Katherine Deverell has proved to be a chip off the old block. The Romsey IGA dairy freezer manager became part of a proud family tradition when she recently took to the woodchop arena at the Royal Melbourne Show. “I got fifth, which wasn’t bad for a first-timer,” Mrs Deverell, 47, said of her debut performance in the double-handed Jill and Jill wood-sawing. With Australian women’s woodchop team member Samantha Rattray — a last-minute ringin — on the other end, Mrs Deverell bowed to the inevitable. “I just got sick of sitting on the sidelines so I

thought I may as well join in,” she said. “I’ve been watching my husband Don compete for 30 years, then the kids got into it.” Two of the four Deverell children, Adele and James, are competitive woodchoppers. “The other two reckon they are too attached to their toes, because when they chop underhand they sometimes cut their feet.” Mrs Deverell was on their side until James came back from this year’s Sydney Royal Easter Show – often dubbed the Wimbledon of woodchop – and said he wanted to saw with her in the Jack and Jill event. ‘‘Just after Easter was the first time I picked up the saw,’’ Mrs Deverell said. Mother and son went on to compete in the

Jack and Jill event at the Royal Melbourne Show, but sadly they were disqualified. “We would have got second, but we got disqualified because there was a little piece of wood hanging and it has to be a perfectly clean cut.” But that hasn’t deterred her. Now she’s cut through, so to speak, Mrs Deverell is off to the Hobart show at the end of the month to compete. “My son can’t get the time off work for this one,’’ she said, ‘‘so I am actually going to saw with my husband for the first time.’’ He won the 11-inch standing block at the most recent show and is taking his wife’s new-found interest with the cool equanimity of a man who always knew it was only a matter of time.

Dr Peter Dingle & Sam Riggio Present

Three mayors fight for seats BY SARAH HARRIS THREE former mayors, two doctors and a tarot card-reading yoga teacher are among the diverse field contesting the October 27 Macedon Ranges Council election. A record 15 candidates have put their hands up to represent the south ward where hotly debated community issues in the growth corridor of Gisborne and New Gisborne have proved a powerful political motivator. No fewer than seven women will line up against south ward councillors Rob Guthrie and John Letchford. Cr Helen Relph is retiring. South ward candidates include former councillor Deb Dunn, Sally Piper, Anne

Moore, Jody Scoble, Michelle Minchew, Alison Joseph and Diana Russo. Also in the running are well-known roads activist Russell Mowatt, Dr Dennis Franklin, Brian Whitefield, Nick Taylor and Glenn Matthews. In west ward, the field is evenly split between the sexes. Incumbent deputy mayor Cr Henryka Benson is contesting again alongside debut candidates GP Dr Jennifer Anderson and yoga teacher Jahne HopeWilliams. West ward’s other sitting councillor Roger Jukes’ name will be joined on the ballot paper by two former mayors, Noel Harvey and John Connor, with Cr Neil Manning deciding not to recontest.

HEALTH

Another past mayor, Geoff Neill, lines up against the current mayor Henry McLaughlin and councillors Joe Morabito and Joan Donovan in east ward. Other candidates for the ward covering Malmsbury, Kyneton, Tylden, Woodend and Carlsruhe include former councillor Henry Bleeck, Deb Alford-Kerr, Graham Hacket and Ian Ellis. The field of 29 candidates is smaller than in the previous 2008 election, when 36 stood. There are 33,712 voters on the roll for Macedon Ranges. Voting is compulsory. The election will be conducted by post with ballot packs being mailed out between October 9-11 and papers returned by 6pm on October 26. More details: vec.vic.gov.au

An Inspiring & Informative Evening Dr. Peter Dingle & local Sunbury Author Sam Riggio team up in this public guest speaking event to talk about Natural Health, how to achieve happiness and how to be successful! Dr Peter Dingle is an Author, Speaker, Motivator and a sustainable health advocate. Dr Dingle shares his 25 years of research with his audience in an inspiring and entertaining presentation.

Words take new shape KATHRYN Portelli weaves words into her sculptures. Trained in mosaic art, the Kyneton artist uses words to form part of the theme for her sculptures. Ms Portelli’s work will be included in an outdoor sculpture exhibition at the Kyneton Botanical Gardens on October 21. The Friends of the Gardens will host their second outdoor sculpture fund-raiser at the gardens. About 22 artists will show their work at the one-day event to raise money for the Friends. Ms Portelli says she will exhibit three sculptures, including dice she calls ‘‘climate dice’’. ‘‘As the name implies, we’re gambling with the planet’s safety and life, and we’re sucking the resources out of it, abusing it somewhat. ‘‘[The dice] include decorative elements [related to] how we should handle climate change. It’s really just my thoughts about climate care and planet care.’’

Sam Riggio is an Author, natural health advocate and personal trainer. Sam spent 8 years in a wheelchair after a serious car accident and he now motivates audiences through his journey as he shares his secrets to overcoming problems in life.

Climate gamble: Kathryn Portelli with her climate dice. Among the exhibits will be work by Jason Shaw, Chris Flenley, Dawn Robinson, Ron Davis, Flo Jones and Fiona Orr. They have used mediums including metal and wire, stone, clay and mosaics. Organiser Ann Tomlinson said the first

on show, but fail to quell hubbub 63 Howey Street. The council will seek $1.5 million from the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. The council has allocated $100,000 from its 2012-13 budget for designing and planning the hub and will contribute a further $1.9 million in its 2013-14 budget. Mr Green claims the process has been flawed from the beginning. He cited inadequate traffic and vegetation studies and questioned who rightfully owned the land. The title, dating back to 1978 and owned by the council, was on display at the information session. Mr Green claims it states the land is owned by the ‘president (in the days of a shire president rather than mayor), councillors and ratepayers of Gisborne’, not the shire. ‘‘That means they don’t have the right to do whatever they want. They’re not the owner,’’ he said. ‘‘If it comes to the crunch, down the track that sort of thing would be more than adequate to take to VCAT.’’ A feasibility study conducted by the council first highlighted a need for the hub. There are two kindergartens in Gisborne, including one at Grant Avenue, which has

BY ROBERT FEDELE AN information session run by Macedon Ranges Council laying out its plans for a $4 million early-years hub on Daly Reserve has strengthened the resolve of the Gisborne residents opposing the project. About 60 people attended the session at the council offices in Gisborne last Tuesday night. It was intended to foster community consultation on the project. A group called Preserve Daly Nature Reserve, formed to protect the reserve from development, circulated a petition against the hub on the night and has vowed to continue fighting the plans. ‘‘It was essentially a propaganda exercise,’’ member Rod Green said. ‘‘They put all the good points about the Daly Reserve site and ignored all the downsides. ‘‘There were very few people there who were actively in favour of the [proposed] site.’’ As previously reported by the Weekly, the building will combine a three and four-year-old kindergarten with a maternal child health centre and consulting rooms for visiting specialist children’s services. The preferred location is on the reserve at

‘It was essentially a propaganda exercise. They put all the good points about the Daly Reserve site and ignored all the — Rod Green downsides.’ reached capacity. If the project gets the nod, the Grant Avenue site will be sold to provide a further $300,000 towards the project. The Preserve Daly Nature Reserve group is not opposed to an early-years hub but says there are two blocks of vacant land on the corner of Willowbank and Brady roads which would be a more suitable site. The council does not own that site. The council’s community well-being director, Karen Stevens, said the information session had been well received. ‘‘From our point of view, it was planned to provide as much accurate information as we could.

‘‘Even the people who oppose the proposed site have very much supported the fact that we need an early-years hub in Gisborne.’’ Ms Stevens said the project would occupy 10 per cent of the four-hectare site. She said the council would take submissions until October 31. ‘‘It’s not for us to say if it [the information session] changed minds. But people were certainly feeling more informed.’’ Howey Street resident Chris Jackson attended the session and was part of the committee involved in the feasibility study. He said the project would take up only a small amount of the reserve, not the whole of it, as many residents believed. ‘‘I use the current kindergarten and it’s way too small,’’ Mr Jackson said. ‘‘I live in Howey Street myself. I don’t have a problem with a bit of extra traffic.’’ Mr Green said the Preserve Daly Nature Reserve group would make a collective submission to the council and had encouraged its members to make their own as well. The group also plans to meet the council’s CEO in coming weeks. ‘‘We’ll take it as far as we need to win.’’

Gratefully received: Diggers Rest Lions Club’s Monty Russell (front right) gives the cheque to Ian Lupson.

Blokes given a leg up BY TARA MURRAY SUNBURY Men’s Shed received the boost of a $1000 donation from the Diggers Rest Lions Club last week. Lions member Monty Russell said his club helped a number of groups and the Sunbury shed was an ideal choice as its programs benefited men’s health. ‘‘It’s a good local cause and with them still setting up the shed we were happy to help.’’ Men’s Shed spokesman Ian Lupson said

members were still unsure about what the money would be spent on. ‘‘At this stage it hasn’t been earmarked for anything. We are thinking about getting more machinery. ‘‘We’re still setting up the shed and workshop and the donation will certainly be a big help.’’ Mr Lupson said two shed members were also members of the Lions club. ‘‘We’ve said to the Lions club that we will help them with things if they need help.’’

cricket at the crossroads Cricket’s future is in the hands of youngsters like aspiring Ridddels Creek player Jackson Wadden Picture: Marco De Luca

L

IKE the whirr of a mower or the smell of freshly cut lawn, the sight of kids playing cricket in the street is still one of the clearest signs summer has arrived. Whether it’s in the front yard or back, side street or school oval, a bat’n’bowl with your mates is one of the great Australian traditions. But as the world changes and more kids connect over the click of a mouse than a flick off the pads, has a good old-fashioned backyard battle become exactly that: old fashioned? Or is it a sign of a wider issue? That children are not embracing the age-old game of cricket like they used to. Riddells Creek Cricket Club’s Peter Cullen certainly thinks so. And his opinion carries as much weight as a hefty club kit. He’s the kind of bloke who provides the glue at most sporting clubs, the salt of the earth allrounder who’s been president, coach, even the barman. Cullen says his club is ‘‘surviving’’. It won the McIntyre Cup last summer for the bestperforming club in the Gisborne & District Cricket Association. However, the picture is far less rosy when you look further down the grades. ‘‘It’s dying slowly in the junior grades,’’ Cullen says. ‘‘We see a big drop-off at the under-16 level. We didn’t have an under-16 team last year for the first time in years.’’ Cullen goes along with the common belief that more and more kids can’t see the appeal in standing in the sun for hours on end, hoping for a ball to roll their way. ‘‘There’s a real challenge ahead for the game,’’ he says. ‘‘You have to market it in schools; you can’t just sit back and expect the kids to turn up because they won’t.

With other sports and summer activities satisfying children’s interests and short attention spans, Ben Cameron asks whether Australia’s national support can survive. Riddles Creek’s Jack Radford pads up Picture: Marco De Luca ‘‘The season is too long. It’s hard to find kids who will commit to a six-month season.’’ Traditionally, blokes like Cullen wield the most power and influence around a typical Australian cricket club. But these days you could argue the junior coordinator has the most important job. With so many other activities vying for attention from children with short attention spans, it’s their job to get them interested in cricket, and keep them that way. Luckily, Darley Cricket Club has a good recruiter in Tim Gallagher, who mas more than 30 years’ experience in the game. Gallagher’s concerns for his own club begin in a much younger age bracket than those at Riddells Creek. He says the club’s youngest access point, the Milo in2Cricket program, has lost 10 kids over the past four seasons, and he admits the game has a huge fight on its hands to stay relevant. ‘‘I hate to say it, but it’s declining,’’ Gallagher says. ‘‘The numbers have fallen slightly with senior, junior and Milo cricket in the past few years. I’m aware of a number of clubs that have lost junior sides.’’ He blames increasing sports fees, families’ financial struggles and other emerging sports for the exodus. The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows cricket isn’t even in the top four for most popular sport for children aged between five and 14, and it captures less than one tenth of the market. Outdoor soccer (20 per cent), swimming (17 per cent) and Australian Rules football with 16 per cent dominate the age bracket. When it comes to planning and marketing the game’s future, Cricket Victoria’s game and market development manager, Rohan O’Neill, is at the coalface. Schools are factories for churning

out cricketers, but O’Neill, a former Premier League cricketer, is concerned that while there’s plenty of potential stars going into the system, too few are coming out the other side. Victoria remains a national leader with 273,000 cricketers at last count, but O’Neill says there’s been a notable decrease in registrations at club level. ‘‘It’s a bit of a concern,’’ he concedes. “There is always an attrition rate with sports and people don’t have the same commitment like they used to. ‘‘Not everybody wants to commit to a cricket season for six months.’’ Yet 2012 has undoubtedly been a good year for cricket. Last summer’s Twenty20 Big Bash captured a new market, the Australian Test team is on the way back up the world rankings, and Channel Nine’s recent Howzat! series about Kerry Packer’s cricket revolution was watched by nearly three million Australians. But will it equate to more bums in whites, and on seats when the big matches come to town? At least the powers that be don’t have their heads in the sand. A cricket governance review in 2011 says Cricket Australia (CA) faces an uphill battle to win the hearts and minds of youngsters: ‘‘Much of the money is increasingly concentrated at the very top of the sport, and not so well at grassroots.’’ Which is why CA is pushing the game hard at schools, with introductory programs like Milo in2Cricket, which had a 1.7 per cent rise in registrations during the past financial year.

Overall, CA believes the game is holding its own. Its latest annual report stated that total participation in outdoor cricket grew from 464,253 to 662,364 in the eight seasons leading up to 2010-11. At the entry level, numbers increased by 30.73 per cent to 127,279, running neck and neck with another popular Australian sport in tennis, whose official kids’ starter program, Tennis Hot Shots, aimed at 5-12-year-olds, leapt to 248,013 participants in 2010-11. While some cricket clubs fear for the future, in a little town called Elaine in the Moorabool Shire, the juniors are bucking the trend. The local cricket club had been in the wilderness for 12 years until the collective enthusiasm of the town’s junior cricketers inspired a renaissance for the game. Elaine Cricket Club vice-president Shane Dunn says the winds of change picked up last summer when 35 youngsters signed up for Milo In2Cricket. ‘‘That set everything going,’’ Dunn says. ‘‘They got a little taste of cricket and now they want to play junior cricket and it’s inspired the older blokes to put on the whites again.’’ It’s a unique story and one to be heard by millions. Cricket Australia will refer to it as an inspiring case study during its promotional campaign this summer. It’s probably why Rohan O’Neill is confident about the game’s future. ‘‘Cricket is still very much part of the fabric of Australian culture,’’ he says. How big, and in what form that is, remains to be seen.

Why our vote really counts With the Macedon Ranges Council election on October 27, and voters again faced with unfamiliar candidates, Macedon Ranges Residents’ Association (MRRA) is asking the shire residents to pause a moment before they fill in their ballot papers. With the right to vote comes responsibility: when we vote, we shape our democracy, and destiny. Who we elect is important, because councillors make critical decisions on our behalf. We owe it to ourselves and the next generation to take a little time to ensure we

make the best decisions we can. Before you vote, find out more about the candidates, especially the ones you don’t know. Call them, and ask them why you should vote for them. MRRA will also be looking at candidates. On our website — mrra.asn.au — we will post information about the election, the council, and who we would and wouldn’t vote for. You may also wish to check that out. Christine Pruneau, secretary, Macedon Ranges Residents’ Association

Showtime is all in this family BY TARA MURRAY FOR Melva Beer, being part of the Sunbury show has become a family affair. ‘‘My husband was involved in the show when we got married over 40 years ago and I have been involved since,’’ she said last week. ‘‘The first thing I ever did was make a tea cossie and I never won. I later found out it was because I didn’t put lining in it. ‘‘I really enjoy the craft side of the show and my daughters and grandkids have since got involved.’’ During the 40 years, the Romsey resident has had a number of roles in the show and she will be in charge of the home craft pavilion at this year’s show on October 13. ‘‘I’m really passionate about the show and having lived in Sunbury it’s something that was important. ‘‘I’ve been the president, secretary and I’ve been in charge of the home craft pavilion on and off for a number of years.

Arts and craft time: Melva Beer with some of her creative work. ‘‘I seem to do the role for five-six years, have a break and then do it again. This is my second year back this time.’’ Ms Beer said she loved doing the role, but would like young people to get involved.

‘‘I’m 68 years old and it’s nice to get some younger people involved, but it’s hard to get them to do it. ‘‘Younger people have some good ideas, but all say they are too busy. ‘‘I used to do it with three kids.’’ Mrs Beer said the show had changed

Managing Your Property Investment There is no doubt that investing in residential property is profitable in the long term–so long as it is professionally managed. Fees paid to professional managers of property are essentially an investment. They should lead to greater returns for the property investor/landlord. Often, landlords who collect the rent themselves can be inexperienced in many aspects of property management. They may be over zealous with rent rises, or forget them, or issue rent demands in an ad-hoc or disorganised way. Repairs and general upkeep of the premises can be neglected as a consequence of a landlord’s lack of managerial experience, knowledge and time. This will limit the property’s potential value, both in terms of capital worth and rental returns. Real estate agents, such as ourselves, who specialise in property management are obliged to keep up-to-date with the latest requirements, legal and regulatory, with which landlords are bound to comply. Ignorance of these can bring a landlord before the Courts, possibly facing stiff penalties. And remember, ignorance of the law is not a ground for defence. A question every landlord must ask is: do I have the time and experience to deal with dayto-day administration of my rental property, including any emergencies should they arise? In most cases the answer is "no." At Dunlop we are experts in all aspects property management. For sound, professional advice regarding any aspect of property management and investment, or if you have any interest or question on a possible sale or purchase, do not hesitate to contact me, John Dunlop on 9744 5555 or call into our friendly offices at Sunbury and Gisborne for a chat.

A leg-up in Landing to get things going Community groups can apply for grants thanks to Williams Landing here’s no time to waste to take advantage of the Williams Landing neighbourhood grants program, with applications closing on Friday. Not-for-profit community groups are being encouraged to apply for grants of $500, $1000 and $2000 courtesy of the program. The grants are available for community groups in Altona, Altona Meadows, Hoppers Crossing, Laverton, Point Cook, Seabrook, Truganina, Tarneit, Werribee and Williams Landing. Established in 2009 by Williams Landing property developer Cedar Woods, the program is designed to assist clubs providing services that benefit the community. More than 50 sporting, welfare, cultural and recreation groups have benefited from the program so far, sharing in $60,000 funding for disability programs, help for disadvantaged

It’s the effort and community spirit of these organisations that makes Williams Landing the sought-after address it’s become.’’ A committee of local community leaders will select the successful applicants, who will be announced in November. ‘‘Cedar Woods’ masterplanned community at Williams Landing will set a new benchmark in design excellence and liveability as a community where everything is

Essential Spring Racing Carnival Preparation!

Dedicated follower of fashion This fashionista has a proud history of ‘placing’ in Fashions on the Field, and she still preaches the gospel of Deportment, Originality, Style and Elegance. Carole Levy reports hen 43-year-old Geannie Todaro won as a first-time entrant in Fashions on the Field at the Werribee Cup in 1997, it began an interest she has joyfully embraced every yyear since.

W

Geannie went on to win the state Sandow that year, the first final at Sandown th Field at Moonee Fashions on the 2003 and was runner-up Valley in 2003, Melbourn Cup event in 2007. at the Melbourne But, Geanni Geannie says, it’s not about win winning. She has been eliminate eliminated many times in early rounds and it doesn’t lessen her en enjoyment one bit.

‘‘It’s the creative process m of making my own hats an designing my race-day outfits that gives and me the most pleasure. And getting together on the day with other women who love gla glamorous fashion.’’

Make this racing season your most glamorous. Discover the tips tricks and secrets of better balance and walking! Afternoon workshops, October 14th or 20th. Bookings and enquiries on 0419 537 480 or miranda@acturelab.com

Geannie makes no claims to being a milliner, but after a week-long workshop many years ago with renowned Louise Macdonald she was hooked.

‘‘I usually get my hat materials from op shops or vintage outlets and find it wonderfully therapeutic to piece them together, sometimes from three different hats.’’

Geannie has always been a lover of fashion but not a slave to it.

move smarter, not harder

She’s similarly inventive when it comes to her outfits. For this year, Geannie has purchased a summer dress with bursts of colourful flowers on a beige background. She will team it with a white organza coat and a hat spruced up with cornelli ribbon snaffled from a previously loved Lisa Ho jacket.

Influenced by her Italian mother, who invested in ‘‘‘‘a few good pieces’’, Geannie has always been a lover of fashion but not a slave to it. e She enthusiastically subscribes to the DOSE princip principle of Deportment, Originality, Style, Eleganc Elegance, believing no woman can go wrong by sticking to it.

Geannie, now 58, does her own hair, makeup and nails for race days and believes these special fashion events are made for going ‘over the top’ in the glamour stakes. ‘‘It’s not something we get to do every day.’’

www.mrsc.vic.gov.au Tenders are invited from suitably qualified and experienced persons/organisations for the following contracts:

Geannie considers accessories to be the most important choices and doesn’t mind spending on shoes. ‘‘I bought my shoes this year at a Myer sale. They’re an Italian label, nude and black with a silver bow buckle. I’m happy to snazz up cheaper clothing, but I’m never afraid to invest in good shoes.’’

Be your best

Girls, invite the gang over By Carole Levy

W

omen don’t usually need an excuse to get together with their girlfriends, but this October provides one should it be needed. Girls Night In, an initiative of the Cancer Council since 2004, provides women a chance to reconnect with friends in the name of a good cause. With busy lifestyles, it can be hard to carve out time to come together as a group, but a night like this really is the perfect opportunity. You can check out girlsnightin.com.au for some great ideas on how to hold a special gathering at home to raise money, but here are a few: Invite the gang over to watch a chick-flick and ask them to donate the price of a cinema ticket. Have everyone arrive in their PJs for a truly relaxed night. Have everyone bring a plate, which is way less stress than doing all the work yourself. To make it more fun, set a cuisine theme or key ingredient. Let everyone donate the cost of a restaurant meal. Set up a games night: Scrabble, Pictionary, charades or any other crazy idea. Let loose and have some good old-fashioned fun. Organise a DIY hair and beauty treatment night and donate an agreed-upon ‘‘price’’.

It’s not until next May, but you can start thinking about holding a Biggest Morning Tea event to raise much-needed funds. Visit biggestmorningtea.com.au to get some ideas (and to register), but you may want to think about a: Themed event — Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, healthy eating or international cuisine. Award prizes for the best hat, costume or plate of food. Collection box — rather than personally asking guests for donations, set up a fun, stand-out donation box in which guests can make a donation if and when it suits them. Recipe book — put together a cookbook of all items at the morning tea as an additional fundraiser. Collect recipes, a photo and story of each contributor.

Physiotherapy hopes at full stretch S

ince taking the helm in 2009, director Justine Barrow has steered longstanding Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic to further expansion of services and staff numbers. Now with seven physiotherapists and a hand therapist, the clinic is adding clinical Pilates to its suite of services. This is a very effective treatment modality and exercise program, says Justine. ‘‘Pilates is of assistance to people recovering from acute and chronic pain. It’s also used to help in injury prevention and to maximise sporting performance in all age groups and fitness levels — from recreational to elite athletes. ‘‘Clinical Pilates is fundamentally different to gym Pilates,’’ she explains. ‘‘It’s not a one-size-fits-all class. Narrowly tailored to each individual, it entails a thorough assessment by an expertly trained physiotherapist who will target specific problems and goals to ensure safe and effective outcomes. Performed under one-on-one or small group supervision, the exercises can be started while in pain or suffering acute injury and progress through to a high-level, challenging program.’’

ITB Syndrome “Runners Knee

Sports Physiotherapist

Recreational running for fitness and health is becoming more popular throughout the world. The down side of this activity is that it can predispose us to injury. A common condition seen by sports physiotherapist is the condition known as ITB syndrome or “Runner’s Knee.

The clinic offers high-quality, evidence-based treatment of all sports and musculoskeletal injuries, including acute and chronic neck and back pain, and joint sprains and strains and muscle and tendon tears. Rehabilitation after surgery and work and motor vehicle accidents, and treatment for arthritis, headaches and dizziness are also available. ‘‘Importantly,’’ says Justine, ‘‘we focus on injury prevention and targeted treatments to help each person achieve their sporting, leisure or work goals.’’ Since 1995, the clinic has been a quality-endorsed practice. This was, and is, a voluntary undertaking to undergo a rigorous accreditation process that promotes excellence in all areas of health service delivery. Now practising at Gisborne Medical Centre each weekday except Monday, the clinic also provides aquatic physiotherapy services at Sunbury and Gisborne. Sunbury Physiotherapy Clinic, at 20 Horne Street, Sunbury, opens 8am-7pm Monday-Friday and 8am-noon Saturday. Inquiries: 9744 5066 or sunburyphysiotherapy.com.au

Written By: Marc Di Paolo

This condition is characterized by pain, whilst running, localized to the lateral aspect (outside) of the knee. Some of the common causes are a sudden increase in running distances particularly in the presence of one of a number of biomechanical problems that may be present in your lower limbs. These could include over pronating feet, incorrect knee position, poor running technique and muscle imbalance around the pelvis, hips and knees. An over tight ITB can cause friction at the lateral femur (thigh bone) as the ITB repetitively crosses the knee and sets up an inflammatory response over the outer most point of the knee. It is essential that the underlying causes are assessed and corrected. Appropriate strengthening and stretching programs should be undertaken and in some instances a period of relative rest may need to be considered. Cross training in the pool or on a bike will help maintain aerobic capacity without causing further aggravation. Sports physiotherapists are highly trained practitioners skilled in the assessment and management of this condition. Ignoring the symptoms may lead to chronic pain and inability to perform at your desired level.

Expanded practice: Justine is pleased to add clinical Pilates to its range of services.

Reaching new altitude Ewan Kennedy reviews Toyota RAV4’s special edition

12 MONTH WARRANTY

oyota Australia has released a special edition of its popular RAV4 compact SUV with what it describes as more than $3500 worth of extra-value features. The RAV4 ‘Altitude’ special edition is based on the 2WD and AWD RAV4 fourcylinder CV models, but at this stage at least, there is no V6 variant in this format. Features beyond the standard CV model grade include satellite navigation and 17-inch alloy wheels. Exterior features include silver roof rails, front fog lamps, rear-quarter, rear-door and rear privacy glass, and an ‘Altitude’ exterior badge. Inside, the RAV4 Altitude SE also has a premium steering wheel and premium gearshift knob, 6.1-inch LCD touch-screen audio unit, satellite navigation with 3-D display and Suna traffic warnings, as well as voice recognition for audio controls, Bluetooth phone control and navigation control. All RAV4 models have electric powerassisted steering to trim fuel consumption.

T

ON PRESENTATION OF THIS AD

Extra value: Styling of the Toyota RAV4 is neat and will appeal to no-nonsense buyers. Safety features include vehicle stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes and Hill-start Assist Control as standard equipment. With Toyota’s expertise in 4WDs behind it the RAV4 is much more competent off-road than most owners realise. The recommended retail price for the special edition Toyota RAV4 Altitude with a manual gearbox and two-wheel drive is $29,990. This is an increase of just $1000 on the RAV4 CV on which it is based.

Baptism of fire for Rangers young gun BY ROY WARD NEW Dandenong Rangers signing Sara Blicavs has come through the gruelling tests of preseason and is ready for life with the WNBL champions. After two WNBL seasons with the Australian Institute of Sport, the 19-year-old has been asked to play power forward and centre due to the lack of import centre Krista Phillips and other Rangers talls, while at training she has struggled to keep up with the intensive fitness work demanded by Rangers coach Mark Wright. Yet Blicavs said she still loved being a part of the Rangers and learning the realities of WNBL basketball. ‘‘This preseason is going to be the death of me,’’ she joked. ‘‘It’s been tiring but I love training hard and getting back into things. ‘‘The girls have been awesome. I’ve fit in so well and they are a very accepting bunch.’’ With several of the Rangers missing from the side during the WNBL preseason tournament at Dandenong Stadium last month, Blicavs got plenty of minutes to run herself up to WNBL speed.

But the majority of those minutes were in the post, rather than her favoured guard and small forward positions. Now with taller players such as Phillips and Carley Mijovic returning to the team, Blicavs is getting used to moving back outside. ‘‘I will play inside a little bit at times, like when I have mismatches or when we are missing players,’’ she said. The Rangers are returning the core of their championship team with Olympians Kath Macleod, Jenna O’Hea and Phillips all back along with Steph Cumming, Tegan Cunningham and Alison Downie. O’Hea could miss the first four or five matches due to WNBA play-off commitments with the LA Sparks. Blicavs and best friend Mijovic both join the team fresh from the AIS and will face a battle to earn minutes in the team. But for Blicavs, she has embraced the battle to prove herself to her new team. ‘‘Our first training was a killer,’’ she said. ‘‘It sounds corny but I idolise those players above me in our team. ‘‘They show me the level I have to reach to be

up with them. You want to beat them at training and they are so knowledgeable that it’s helped me a lot.’’ Blicavs has also adjusted quickly to the demands of Wright, who wants to take his side to a second straight title against Lauren Jackson’s Canberra Capitals and a reloaded Bulleen. ‘‘He is very forward, which is great,’’ she said. ‘‘You need coaches who aren’t afraid to speak their mind because you need to know when you are going good or doing bad. ‘‘He is such a friendly and funny person, then as soon as training starts his mood changes and he becomes angry and intense for two hours, then straight after he is fine.’’ When it comes to her role this season, Blicavs has no idea how she will fit into the Rangers team but is committed to giving her all no matter what she is asked to do. ‘‘I’m trying to prove I’m worthy of playing some minutes but I can’t choose what happens. It’s totally up to Mark,’’ she said. The WNBL season starts on Friday when the Rangers host Bulleen Boomers at Dandenong Stadium at 7pm.

Cannons get a new coach DUAL TAC Cup premiership coach Martin Allison has left the Calder Cannons, and Andrew Jago will take over the role. Allison, who took Calder to grand final wins in 2009 and 2010, has been appointed head coach of the AFL Victoria Metro academy under18 program. Jago has spent two years as a coach at the Calder Cannons and has worked in other AFL Victoria development roles with country players and girls’ teams. His local coaching includes roles with VFL clubs Sandringham and Northern Blues, Old Haileybury, Seddon and Seymour. The Cannons’ best and fairest night will be held on Friday, October 12.

Off and running Sunbury Little Athletics registrations are still open ahead of the first day of competition this weekend. Interested competitors aged 6 to 16 are being encouraged to register online. Last week the club received about 130 registrations but anticipates the final tally to be closer to 200. This season a permanent discus cage, the latest piece of equipment acquired by the club, has been installed at Boardman Reserve. For more information on Sunbury Little Athletics, including how to register, go to sunburylac.org.au.

Pitch state a priority as McIntyre Cup season kicks off RIDDELL starts its premiership defence of the McIntyre Cup in Wallan this weekend when the Gisborne District Cricket Association returns. Pitch readiness will be one of the main concerns across all divisions, with one-day matches scheduled for the first five rounds of the McIntyre Cup seasons.

Last year’s runner-up and Twenty20 champion Woodend hosts Rupertswood in round one, while other matches will pit a promoted Sunbury against Bacchus Marsh, and Romsey against Sunbury United. In B grade, relegated Macedon will look to kick-start its promotion chase at home against St

Anthonys. Bacchus Marsh second XI plays Gisborne first XI, Riddell and Wallan seconds do battle, and Sunbury United second XI takes on Sunbury second XI. In C grade, Diggers Rest Bulla Village first XI is away at Bacchus Marsh thirds, while the other two first XI teams in the division

clash when East Sunbury hosts Ashfield. In D grade, Hesket first XI hosts Riddell at Hanging Rock Reserve. In E grade, Lancefield first XI is away at Ashfield and Tylden first XI is away at Bacchus Marsh. F grade does not start until October 13. — Teo Pellizzeri
