Council rubs out name of shame BY GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK HOBSONS Bay councillors last week voted by a narrow margin to change the name of an Altona Meadows street named after a convicted paedophile Catholic priest. One of the victims of Victor Rubeo, Tony Hersbach, told the Weekly he would mention the council’s decision to rename Rubeo Avenue on Monday at the Victorian parliamentary inquiry into child sex abuse by the clergy. The Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne told the Weekly that it ‘‘accepted’’ the council’s decision. As predicted by the Weekly on February 12, a council majority (4-3) defied a council officers’ report not to change Rubeo Avenue because most street residents opposed a name change, citing cost and inconvenience. Twenty-one people in the street opposed the name change and nine supported it. As reported exclusively by the Weekly on November 28, the street was named after Victor Rubeo, who, in 1996, pleaded guilty in the Ringwood Magistrates Court to two counts of indecent assault against Mr Hersbach and his twin Will, committed at Laverton in 1967 when the boys were 14. Rubeo, 78, died on December 16, 2011, the day he was meant to front the Melbourne Magistrates Court on 30 more child sex abuse charges committed against the twins. Point Cook woman Christine Dunsmore and her mother Jen Austin, of Altona North, had petitioned to change the street name, saying their former family priest ‘‘shouldn’t be revered in any way, shape or form’’. Cr Luba Grigorovitch, who brought the petition to the council, voted to change the street name along with

councillors Angela Altair, Tony Briffa and Paul Morgan. Councillors Colleen Gates, Peter Hemphill and Sandra Wilson voted against. Ms Dunsmore said she rang Mr Hersbach after the council voted to tell him the good news. ‘‘I’m so pleased that council members searched their hearts and minds to discern and make an ethical decision,’’ she told the Weekly. Mr Hersbach, who on Monday gave evidence to the state inquiry into

clergy child sex abuse, told the Weekly he would put the council’s decision on the record. He said he was ‘‘really grateful to the people who took up the fight for us’’ but shocked at the closeness of the council vote. ‘‘The whole family really appreciates it, not just me, but also . . . other victims who I’ve had contact with. ‘‘My brother Will . . . he was very upset at the attitude of the residents . . . that self-interest trumps the principle.

‘‘And that’s how I felt with the councillors who voted against it: that community consultation would trump the principle of what we were trying to get across.’’ James O’Farrell, a spokesman for the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne, said decisions about naming or renaming streets belonged to local and state governments. Cr Grigorovitch said each Rubeo Avenue resident could apply for a $50 assistance package to help with costs associated with the name change.

Patients wait in pain as governments bicker ELDERLY Maribyrnong residents say they’re being left to languish due to federal and state health funding cuts. Footscray Senior Citizens Group member Alexander Francis said some of Maribyrnong’s most vulnerable residents were living each day in unbearable pain as they waited up to six years for hip surgery. “Old people have a life to live, too,” he said. “But many senior citizens face a number of health problems that come with growing older, and the more funding the government cuts from the public health service the more elderly people there are living their lives in constant pain.” Mr Francis said he knew of many elderly residents isolated in their homes as they waited for their elective surgery. Some can’t sleep, walk or undertake day-to-day activities due to their

physical pain. “What kind of a quality of life is that?” he said. “It’s not just elderly people either, it’s children and families who live in Maribyrnong who can’t afford the cost of private health cover. ‘‘The government just thinks that the pain is tolerable.” Western suburbs resident Faye Baker, 74, said she waited 18 months to have her broken wrist repaired. “I was in so much pain because the bone had broken, but it hadn’t healed properly,” she said. “I had to keep telling the hospital I needed to get it repaired. It’s ludicrous. If you’re a public patient and it isn’t life-threatening they think you can just cope with it.” Ms Baker said she knew of residents who had waited seven years for hip surgery. “It doesn’t make sense that the government would take money away from

before the recent hospital funding dispute. “This data proves what we’ve been saying all along: Ted Baillieu’s campaign against the Commonwealth on health funding was a smokescreen for his own government’s failures and health cuts of $616 million.” Williamstown MP Wade Noonan accused the government of trying to keep the worsening state of the public health system a secret by refusing to release the Western Health 2012-13 statement of priorities. “It’s time for the Baillieu government to end the secrecy and release all statement of priorities signed by Mr Davis and the chairs of each Victorian hospital board, which includes Western Health documents.”

forming well in key areas, but federal cuts were the major cause for the elective surgery waiting lists blowout. “Even though Victoria’s hospitals are working hard, they are unable to cope with such a large reduction in national partnership agreement funding, and it’s showing up in elective surgery activity,” he said. Western Health chief executive Alex Cockram last week welcomed the reversal of the $6.46 million federal cuts to the west but warned there might still be adverse impacts. But federal Health Minister Tanya Plibersek said new Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data proved the state government was failing to properly manage Victorian hospitals

RECORD emergency patient numbers and a rapid lengthening of the surgery waiting list are placing Western Hospital in Footscray under unprecedented pressure, new figures show. The December quarter Victorian Health Services Performance Report, released by the state government last week, reveals there were 11,251 patients admitted to Western Hospital in the December quarter, up from 11,098 one year earlier. Williamstown Hospital treated 2697 patients, down from 3156. Footscray’s emergency department presenta-

tions jumped from 8860 to 9301, with a drop at Williamstown from 5225 to 4922. Footscray cut average emergency treatment waiting time and the number of patients treated within benchmark times, but Williamstown slipped on both counts. Footscray’s elective surgery waiting list moved up from 1226 to 1293 as Williamstown’s dropped from 557 to 508. The statewide elective surgery waiting list blew out from 43,173 to 47,760, fuelling tit-for-tat allegations between the state and federal governments over whose funding cuts hurt most. Victorian Health Minister David Davis said the report showed Western Hospital was per-

After cigarette butts, the top litter items in rubbish collected on Clean Up Australia Day are glass and plastic bottles, and aluminium cans, all of which we can keep out of our environments with a 10-cent refund.”

FAMILY violence is being increasingly reported to Hobsons Bay police with 58 more offences recorded last year compared with the previous year — a 36 per cent rise from 159 to 217 cases. Women’s Health West chief, Dr Robyn Gregory, said the police statistics were reflected in a 40 per cent increase in the family violence-related workload for her organisation in the past 12 months.

INBRIEF

Thieves opt to take the train CRIME in Hobsons Bay has risen for the third consecutive year, with big jumps recorded in car theft, retail and commercial burglaries, family violence and property damage. Police figures, released last week, show that in the last calendar year there were 386 vehicle thefts, up 53 per cent from 252 the previous year. Inspector Richard Paterson said: ‘‘The theft of motor cars, I believe, has decreased over the past couple of months, but there was a spike in July/August.’’ Thefts from vehicles numbered 1080, up 26 per cent from 857. ‘‘Most of our crimes are in the surrounds of our railway stations . . . within walking distance of our railway stations,’’ Inspector Paterson said. ‘‘We’re still finding that a lot of people committing crime here don’t actually live in Hobsons Bay; they’re coming in to Hobsons Bay to commit the crime and I suppose many of them are using public transport to do that.’’ Burglaries of shops and businesses jumped nearly 50 per cent, from 167 to 250, while residential burglaries rose 3.5 per cent, from 512 incidents to 530. There were 217 cases of family violence

Altona-based real estate agent Peter Weaver said the local market had dropped anywhere from 10-25 per cent. ‘‘When they see their CIV (capital improved value) on the council rates of $1 million [and] they’re trying to sell their house, they ring us and say, ‘Oh what’s the house worth’, and we say $850,000. They are, of course, a little bit perturbed by that. ‘‘A CIV is a very open type of valuation that the council uses. HOBSONS Bay Council has awarded the contract for evaluating rateable properties to a different company after receiving numerous complaints that homes and land have being overvalued. The contract for next January’s valuation has been awarded to Robert Tot, of Opteon Pty Ltd. Cherry Lake ward councillor Tony Briffa said many complaints, particularly from Seaholme and Altona ratepayers, had been received about the most recent valuation. Valuations are done every two years, the last being in January last year. Seaholme resident Roze

Bogoevska said she realised her vacant block in Newport had been overvalued only when she went to sell it. Settlement on the John Liston Drive land is this month. ‘‘I stupidly thought that they [the council] would have their ratepayers’ interests at heart; they’d be looking out for the ratepayers, so it was never an issue,’’ she said. ‘‘I just received a bill, trusted what they said and paid the bill. ‘‘But when I put the property up for sale, that’s when I was told there’s no way on earth you could get this [asking price] and I thought, hang on a minute.’’ The block sold for $400,000 at auction but had

teens before parting ways and going it alone. For McFarlane, that entailed moving overseas, living in Europe and starting a family. Sailing took a back seat until she moved back to Australia several years ago. She bought herself a one-man Laser dinghy and reconnected with her childhood passion before progressing to crewing on keelboats. Then she bought her first boat. At the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, McFarlane’s boat sits moored among lines of other boats in the marina, gently swaying from side to side. “I’ve had this boat six months,” the West Footscray resident says. “It’s one of those scary challenges that you set yourself and you gulp and think, should I really be doing this? And you just close your eyes and do it anyway.” The 22-year-old 10.5 metre keelboat, named 2x2 because McFarlane and her partner have both been married twice, set her back about 50-large. It’s McFarlane’s pride and joy. “It kind of consumes everything and if you’re gonna spend that sort of money on a boat you want to get out and use it ... you’re not gonna have it to go out once in a blue moon,” she says. McFarlane races up to three times a week. There’s twilight racing after work on Wednesday; an intra-club regatta on Saturday; and social events on Sunday. “There won’t be any boats exactly like this one but it will be a division of boats of a similar size,” she says. “I guess for me it gives you a reason to learn and improve as well as to get a team together and build skills. I just love being on the water. Even if I wasn’t racing I’d still love being on the water. But racing gives you a reason to get out there.” McFarlane and her crew are competing in a new series titled the Port Phillip Women’s Championships, a concept geared at promoting women in sailing. “One of my aims with buying the boat was to be able to introduce more women to sailing. For me it’s been a real confidence-building activity throughout my life which has seen me through

e’re gliding along the water, in the heart of Hobsons Bay, on a sun-kissed Tuesday afternoon. It’s pleasant viewing as a fly on the wall with no task to perform other than adding dead weight to balance the boat. Beyond the ripples of blue you can see the majestic city skyline to the right. On the left and high above is the West Gate Bridge, rows of colourful cars crawling along its lanes. The boat’s owner and skipper Kathy McFarlane is at the helm and is wearing her game face. She’s joined by regular crew members Mandy Murray and Cathy Carracher, and partner Serge, who was talked into coming along for the ride. McFarlane is alert and composed as she bellows out a chain of sailing terminology unknown to me but clearly ingrained in her crew. Conditions are blowy and at 22 knots, nothing to be sneezed at. Tacking – turning from one side of the wind to the other – sees the crew spark to life. There’s a couple of minor complications but for the most part, everything runs smoothly. McFarlane steers the boat and breaks into a broad smile. This is her playground. Her fascination with the water had been explained to me much earlier, on dry land. “I grew up learning to sail down at McCrae on the Mornington Peninsula. My grandfather had a boatshed on the beach there and my family had dinghies. So my earliest memories, probably before I could walk, are of being on a boat on the water,” McFarlane says. She and her older brother started out in a Heron dinghy, an old, robust wooden boat designed for a crew of two and ideal for first-timers. Not long after that her brother spotted boats racing at the yacht club and wanted in on the action. Their father decided the Heron wasn’t going to cut it, so the pair were soon in a Flying Ant, another iconic junior boat which McFarlane says had “the works”. “It’s a really good little training boat for kids.” The pair were part of the Victorian youth sailing squad at the time and slowly progressed to bigger and more intricate boats through their

some pretty tough times,’’ McFarlane says. ‘‘I just wanted to give some other women that opportunity.” The brainchild of Yachting Victoria’s newly formed women and girls in sailing committee, the five-race series will run on Sundays until May and combines existing Lady Skippers races from each of the keelboat clubs around the bay. Moonee Ponds resident Monica Tonner is the committee chairman and has been a member of the Sandringham Yacht Club for five years where she co-ordinates races. Like McFarlane, Tonner learned to sail in her childhood, but only recaptured the urge in her 30s. For the past two years, she’s taken part in the Sydney to Hobart race aboard Wild Rose, owned by one of Australia’s most experienced offshore yachtsmen, Roger Hickman. Last year the boat won its division with a crew of six men and six women. “Being an iconic race and being out there amongst the fleet ... it’s adrenalin-pumping,” Tonner recalls vividly. “There’s nothing to prove because they respect us [women] for who we are. Physically you may not compare but you endure the same mentally.” So why the need for an all-women’s series? Tonner says the committee identified a need to promote more female participation in the sport and hatched the series in a bid to merge all the races that are held around the bay under the one umbrella. The big hook is encouraging women to step up to helming and to increase the levels of boat ownership among women sailors. “We believe that even though there were women’s events it needed to be conglomerated and embraced,” Tonner says. “Until you give it support and it is embraced ... it can’t grow.” Williamstown resident Tanya Stanford jumped on board the concept. Stanford comes from a boating background, her uncle is one of the largest commercial and pleasure boat manufacturers in the country.

Opposite page: Cathy Carracher crews the boat. Top left: Tanya Stanford is owner and captain of Nouannie, winner of Australia’s Keelboat Regatta 2010. Top right: Monica Tonner, centre, aboard Wild Rose during last year’s Sydney to Hobart as the winning crew sails up the Derwent River and to the finish line. Above: Kathy McFarlane on the tiller.

She grew up in Pittwater, on Sydney’s northern beaches, and was soon sailing with friends. “I skipped the dinghy,” she laughs. “That was too much hard work. I didn’t like the tipping-over bit.” Stanford sailed for much of her life thereafter, even fitting in a three-year odyssey from Australia to Sweden in the late ’80s. But it was only ever a hobby. In 2005 however, she helped create the women-in-sailing competition, which the Sandringham Yacht Club now runs, and started racing. She’s won several trophies along the way. In 2005 she was the first woman to compete in the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria’s singlehanded race. In 2008 and 2010 she took out the Australian Women’s Keelboat Regatta, a first for her home club. Stanford believes this new series will encourage more women to make the step to boat ownership. She bought her boat, Nouannie, in 2009. “I was the first woman at this club to buy her own keelboat,” she says. “It’s really backward when you think about it.

“For me it’s about giving back to the crew. Even though I own the boat, any of the girls can take it up the river and they can enter any races. I think it’s fantastic, giving women who don’t own boats an opportunity to helm in a race.” McFarlane says if she had been asked about the need for an all-women’s series before venturing into keelboat sailing she would have questioned it. “But when you step onto keelboats, everything’s bigger,” she says. “Some would argue that there’s more strength needed to do things. And it’s a traditionally male dominated sport. I realised that, actually, there are very few women sailors on keelboats. If you go out on a boat with a bunch of blokes they tend to do everything.” For now, McFarlane says she’s taking it slow and steady. “As a skipper I’m pretty lousy, as our record indicates,” she says tongue in cheek. “But I guess for me my goals aren’t necessarily to win races at the moment. Although that would be great, my main goal is that everybody enjoys the experience. “I’m still learning to sail this boat effectively myself. I’m relatively new to helming. I’ve

always crewed in the past. I’m a newbie skipper. One of the biggest challenges for any boat owner, apart from the financial outlay, is just attracting and maintaining a crew.” Stanford, a senior sailing instructor for Yachting Australia, believes the divide between men and women is all in the mind and that women can make the grade at the helm. “Some boats you need strength and that’s where the men come into it. But then, women can work smarter to get around that strength issue. There’s a way of simplifying everything as far as I’m concerned.” While Stanford says this series is all about fun and promoting the sport, the competitive drive in her will kick in. “I will always do my best whatever race I go out on. We always have fun. But I’m not going to be sitting back with a glass of wine in my hand. I will do my best to make the boat perform.” Either way it seems like Stanford will be quenching her thirst. As McFarlane points out, once the argy-bargy of racing is over the banter begins. “Ohhhhhhhh it’s huge,” she says of the social element to the sport. “There’s the race to the finishing line and then the race to the bar.”

‘‘Everyone has reasons for doing something and I just really do care. ‘‘I think people are so much more willing to participate when it’s something that affects children, and that’s great.’’ Ms Cook’s employer, Sun Theatre Yarraville, is her official sponsor. Her boss has threatened to donate enough money to shave the cinema’s logo on her head. ‘‘I’ve also recruited a whole bunch of people who are going to shave with me on the day,’’ Ms Cook said. ‘‘If you want to come down and promote it, that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m not asking for everyone to give money; I’m just asking them to spread the word.’’

BY GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK A WILLIAMSTOWN nursing student is hoping to catch the eye of Ellen DeGeneres during her visit to Melbourne this month. Alex Cook has made a YouTube film she hopes will attract the attention of the popular US talkshow host and aid fund-raising for the Leukaemia Foundation. ‘‘It’s just because she’ll be in Melbourne and she does a lot of this kind of thing,’’ Ms Cook said. ‘‘I’m pretty aware that I won’t get Ellen DeGeneres — I think she’s already chosen people — but it’s just spreading the word, putting it viral. ‘‘In our generation, if it’s not on the internet, people don’t care.’’ On March 17, Ms Cook will let down her waist-length blonde hair for the World’s Greatest Shave at Williamstown Soccer Club. And whoever donates the highest amount gets to cut it all off. ‘‘[The film is] more to spread the word, get people to come down,’’ Ms

VCAT fees might put objectors on ropes BY GOYA DMYTRYSHCHAK

Fairytale inspiration

HOBSONS Bay Council is worried about soaring fees at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The council is unable to predict how much it will ultimately cost to fight just one developer who has lodged multiple appeals. Evolve Development is fighting the council and residents in a bid to demolish buildings for a high-rise development on the former Port Phillip Woollen Mill site in Williamstown. Mayor Angela Altair said increased costs could also stop residents being able to access VCAT. “In one instance, the fee for hearings involving objectors will increase from $38 to $731, before increasing again to over $1000 by 2015. “Such an increase could make it unaffordable for some residents to lodge an application, and it limits people’s access to the justice system.’’ The council has made a submission to the Justice Department expressing its belief that VCAT should be accessible to all.

“Such an increase limits people’s access to the justice system.’’ — Cr Angela Altair Hobsons Bay planning and environment director Peter Gaschk said the council had budgeted for legal expenses to represent the community on issues like the high-rise development on the mill site. ‘‘One application concerning the Port Phillip Woollen Mill site has been heard at VCAT and the council’s legal costs for this application were approximately $15,000. ‘‘There are five remaining matters relating to this site that are listed for hearing and decision at VCAT. ‘‘It is not possible to determine estimated costs for those matters at this stage.’’ Evolve managing director Ashley Williams said he expected his cost for up to four different appeals at VCAT would ‘‘run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars’’.

Solutions demanded for Third World woes BY TOM ARUP

On the nose: Bert Boere and other members of the Brooklyn Residents Action Group guard against pollution. Picture: Mal Fairclough/The Age

FOR many decades, an ill wind has blown in Brooklyn. The suburb suffers from heavy air pollution caused by a nearby industrial estate north of Geelong Road. Its pollution soars well above national health standards and levels elsewhere in the city. But, despite the Environment Protection Authority’s efforts to address the problem, residents are alarmed by recent data showing days of high dust pollution are again on the rise. With concerns over the pollution’s effect on health, more locals are calling on the Baillieu government to step in and tackle the problem once and for all. Carmen Largaiolli said she and other Brooklyn residents had put up with cars and houses covered in dust for years. She said a fine black soot continually built up on the window sills and in the bathroom of her house. ‘‘We’ve got a Third World zone nine kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD.’’ The cities of Hobsons Bay and

Brimbank last week endorsed submissions to a Senate inquiry into air quality, calling for urgent attention to protect the health of residents in and

‘‘We’ve got a Third World zone nine kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD’’ — Carmen Largaiolli around Brooklyn. The submissions state that residents surrounding ‘‘Victoria’s worst pollution black spot’’ are at risk of respiratory infections, allergic reactions, asthma attacks, chronic respiratory diseases and heart conditions. Dust levels in Brooklyn’s industrial area peaked again this summer, blowing up to eight times the World Health Organisation’s safe maximums. Brimbank Council administrator Jane Nathan said Brooklyn residents faced up to 50 days a year when dust was at an unhealthy level.

‘‘Last year it exceeded 40 days and moved up to 50 days when there was unacceptable risk to residents and their health. If you compare our levels in Brooklyn to areas like South Yarra and Brighton, where residents have only around two days a year where there is unacceptable levels of dust, it is just unbelievable.’’ EPA chief John Merritt said dry, windy conditions so far in 2012-13 had exacerbated the problem. Bert Boere, of the Brooklyn Residents Action Group, said that while the EPA had tried hard, the problems were too large for a single agency. He called for the adoption of a local councildeveloped plan — the Brooklyn evolution project — to modernise the industrial precinct, which, he said, would need all-of-government support. Williamstown MP Wade Noonan said that in light of a recent Baillieu government action plan for dealing with pollution in the Yarra River and Port Phillip Bay, the government should now also commit resources to Brooklyn’s environment problems. — With Melissa Cunningham

touch of flair sets this townhouse apart while its proximity to the best of what Yarraville has to offer is sure to pique the interest of discerning buyers. The stylish weatherboard property has been architecturally designed to allow maximum natural light to flow through. It is low-maintenance, inside and out, with a pebbled concrete drive, astro turf, decked porch and easily maintained gardens. Inside, striking polished floorboards enrich the decor. A downstairs bedroom has two vertical windows with venetian blinds, a split-system unit and built-in wardrobes. Bi-fold doors lead to a resort-style ensuite with floor-to-ceiling mottled chocolate-coloured tiles, a thick decorative frameless shower screen, rain showerhead, large window and a circular basin. The townhouse has ample storage in the form of linen cupboards upstairs and down, and there’s built-in shelving in the garage, which also has internal access.

Enjoy cooking in the good-sized kitchen with a Smeg 900mm cooker, metallic flecked stone splashback and matching benchtops, single-door dishwasher, and a horizontal window. A Rinnai heater and split-system unit are features of the meals and family area. The living areas extends through 7.2-metre-wide bi-fold doors, which open to a back decked entertainment area. This area has been designed with dinner parties and laidback barbecues in mind. Built-in bench seats and a corner designated for a raised vegie box are extra features. A wooden curved staircase with decorative cut-out walls leads to two bedrooms with split-system units, vertical windows and double built-in wardrobes. The rooms share a bathroom with shower over the bath and a retractable screen. New owners will relish the closeness of the train station, schools, shops and Yarraville Village.

Dr. Tony Stubbs, Eye Surgeon, of The Williamstown Eye Centre says that just about anyone can have their vision restored and be rid of their glasses for almost all the time. And this is without the use of laser surgery. Dr Stubbs, a visiting specialist at the Royal Victorian Eye & Ear Hospital who has worked with the Fred Hollows eye department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, says he began his career through the inspiration of his father, Dr Maxwell Stubbs. “My father was a pioneer in cataract implant surgery and I did my training under him. He passed away three years ago but some of his patients still come in for a check-up. Not only is this inspirational, it also demonstrates that good surgery outlasts the surgeon,” Dr Stubbs says. A specialist who helps people who have been advised they are unsuitable for laser surgery, Dr Stubbs is also committed to demonstrating that age, corneal distortion or astigmatism are no barriers to eliminating the need for glasses. “One of my best moments was treating a 12-year-old girl who was struggling at school because of poor vision, even with the use of thick glasses. Now 10 years later, she still has 20/20 vision without glasses. That inspires me. “Seeing my patients’ bright smiles after surgery, as they stop squinting and can read without glasses, is definitely the best part of my job.” No referral is needed and no out-of-pocket expenses are incurred for an assessment to enable all options available to be considered.

mild reworking. The previous silver decoration panels and aluminium-finish steering wheel bezel have been replaced by a glossy dark grey. Two-tone Recaro sports seats with leather and perforated Alcantara facings were featured on the MX-5 Coupe Sports versions we tested. On the road during our recent week’s road test we found the latest Mazda MX-5 to be as delightful to drive as ever. We have been road testing this little roadster since 1989 and are pleased to report the new MX-5 continues to provide driving in its purest form. Being on the wrong side of 60, I have to admit that getting in and out of the Mazda MX-5 is a struggle. But you don’t have to be over 60 to find that the interior is on the tight side. Driving in its purest form in an affordable sports car doesn’t come any better than with the Mazda MX-5. Other than the previously mentioned niggles about interior space, we loved every moment in it. Prices start at $47,200, not including government or dealer delivery charges.

azda has made bold changes to the frontal styling of its MX-5. Whereas every model to date has had a grille that harked back to the original 1989 MX-5, the latest model follows a theme similar to the other passenger models in the extensive Mazda range. The result is that the latest MX-5 has a deep grille shaped to give it a 3D appearance. The headlights have a gunmetal effect in their surrounds. Foglights are a fashion item these days, so the MX-5s stand out proudly to attract the younger generation. This is likely to be the final shape of the third generation MX-5 prior to the all-new model that’s due in 2014. Fascinatingly, the next generation of Mazda MX-5 sees the very Japanese Mazda company teamed with the legendary Italian Alfa Romeo organisation. We can’t wait to see what should be an excellent mix of Italian style and Japanese build quality. Cynics joke that it may be the other way around, but let’s think positive. Rams’ shocker an ace in hole for wily Wolves BY LANCE JENKINSON

Run-hungry: Altona top-order batsman Aaron Maynard finished the summer with 499 runs to be among the top 10 run-makers in the league. Picture: Michael Copp

Derby win sweet for Gulls WILLIAMSTOWN has finished the Victorian Sub-District Cricket Association regular season on a high note. The Seagulls beat Yarraville in the western suburbs derby and had three of four sides qualify for the finals. Veteran all-rounder Craig Sheedy was at his best in a sweet 27-run oneday win over Yarraville at the Yarraville Oval on Saturday. Sheedy, who blasted 74 not out and took 2-28, was named man of the match. The Seagulls missed out on the finals by six points but still have a

chance to win flags in the seconds, thirds and fourths. Yarraville, which started the summer promisingly, petered out for a fourth-last finish. All-rounder Alex Hewet had an incredible summer for the Eagles, taking 29 wickets at 17.9 and scoring 283 runs. Altona ran 10th after a late-season surge. The A’s lost a last-round thriller to Elsternwick by seven runs. Aaron Maynard, after making 93, will be filthy on his teammates for not chasing down the 158 target. — Lance Jenkinson

IT’S a script that is written for baseball fans in the west. The division 2 minor premiership will be decided when arch-rivals Newport Rams and Williamstown Wolves play in a western suburbs showdown on Saturday. At stake is automatic promotion to the first division ‘bigs’ – pending league approval – the No.1 ranking in the finals and bragging rights ahead of the best-of-three semi-final series they have already locked in by finishing in the top two. Seven days ago, the prospect of this game having so much riding on it were negligible with the Rams holding a two-game lead and seeming unlikely to drop a game. But circumstances changed at the weekend when the Rams were flogged 22-12 by Bonbeach, while the Wolves dismantled Port Melbourne 9-1. The Wolves have refused to go away. They’ve been hot on the tail of the ladder-leading Rams all summer.

‘‘We started preseason in early August, so you’re talking about seven months to get to where we are now,’’ Wolves playing president Ryan Camov told the Weekly. ‘‘It has taken a lot of perseverance from the boys. They’ve continued to chip away and we find ourselves where we are now, so it’s kind of exciting.’’ After 22 rounds, both the Rams and the Wolves still have a chance to finish on top of the pile. Another four teams will fight out the other two spots in the division 2 finals. Similarly in division 1, the finals race and a relegation scrap is as close as ever. Camov likes what he sees in the big picture for Victorian baseball. ‘‘It’s pretty fascinating to think we play 22 games and it all comes down to the last one to sort that out,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s been a great end to the season in both divisions, 1 and 2. ‘‘They’ve both had a really tight finish and are still deciding finals spots in the last week.

‘‘It’s good to have that balance in the league.’’ To win top spot, the Wolves will need to beat the Rams by two runs or more. Even if the Wolves finish on top, they might not meet Baseball Victoria’s promotion criteria due to their junior program. ‘‘At the moment, we don’t meet the criteria, but we’re working with Baseball Victoria to see if we can sort something out,’’ Camov said. ‘‘It’d be a little bit disappointing to qualify for division 1 and not be able to go up based on junior requirements. ‘‘Building a junior program takes time and energy and we’re working on it. We had a two-year plan and we might get there a bit quicker than we anticipated. ‘‘It is what it is and we’ll take it in our stride.’’ It will not detract from the highstakes affair at KC White Reserve on Saturday. A big crowd is expected at Park Crescent to see the first pitch at 3.30pm.

Toey Combine recover their guile BY LANCE JENKINSON YARRAVILLE-Footscray has swooped on the Bowls Victoria division 1 section 2 title. The Combines hardly rolled a bowl out of place on a weekend that edged them closer to the top-flight premier division. They brushed aside bogey team Eltham 91-61 in Saturday’s semi-final and followed up a day later to blitz Deer Park 101-50 in an all-west section final. The Combines advance to the divisional semi-final, where they play Heathmont at Lalor on Saturday, with the winner to seal automatic promotion to the premier league. ‘‘It’s big stakes,’’ Combines coach Wayne Roberts said. Yarraville-Footscray was undoubtedly fidgety about having to face Eltham, a team it had met twice during the regular season and lost both times. The Combines were less than convincing in the early ends and took until half-time to settle. ‘‘Their form was probably the best

going into the finals,’’ Roberts said. ‘‘They’d beaten us and Deer Park. Some of our guys might’ve been a bit toey, a bit worried, and I gave them a talking to at half-time. We were much better after the break.’’ The Combines went on to win by 32 shots. The final pitted first placed Yarraville-Footscray with the second-placed Deer Park in a western suburbs showdown. The Combines showed none of the jitters from a day earlier, romping to a 51-shot victory.

‘‘It’s a real good buzz around the place,’’ Roberts said. ‘‘Some of the guys hadn’t played finals before so they were pretty excited.’’ Yarraville-Footscray will return to the big league if it can overcome Heathmont. Being from different sections, the sides don’t know a great deal about each other. ‘‘It’s a different ball game,’’ Roberts said. ‘‘We’ve never seen them and we don’t know them. We’re going in blind, they’re going in blind. ‘‘If we keep doing what we’ve been doing, we’re going to give ourselves every chance.’’ In premier division, Altona has made a raucous start to the finals, annihilating Bundoora RSL 98-57 in the cut-throat semi-final. Through Brett Foley (26-18), David Zitter (21-15), Brad Peck (25-12) and Brenton Coad (26-12), the A’s claimed all four rinks. The A’s will meet Moonee Ponds in the preliminary final. Altona Sports triumphed over Newport by a single shot in a thrilling division 3 section 1 final.

Congs pull off upset

Imperials eager to wipe slate

YOU hear it every March: anything can happen in the finals. It is the line rolled out by most topranked sides so as to not sound too cocky or provide ammunition for the fourth-ranked team. Williamstown Congs was that fourth-placed outsider in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association B1 semi-finals at the weekend and executed the perfect smash and grab to topple minor premiers Williamstown Imperials at Greenwich Reserve. You see, fourth can beat first in the finals. Upsets can happen. Congs, though, see it from a different viewpoint. ‘‘We knocked off the top side, but we’d like to think it wasn’t too much of an upset,’’ Congs wicketkeeper Gary Griffen said. ‘‘It was a very good win, an even performance. ‘‘We’re very happy because you don’t get many chances to play in a grand final. You’ll take any chance you can get.’’ The Congs restricted Imperials to 151 off 65.3 overs on the opening day. It’s not a score that screams out at you, but one that was more than competitive in the conditions. ‘‘Even though the wicket was good to bat on, it was tough to score out there,’’ Griffen said. ‘‘It’s very lush and when you hit the ball along the ground, it slows up quickly, so 150 wasn’t a bad score really.’’ Scott Dyson was easily the pick of the Congs bowling attack. The speedster finished with 5-38 off 12.3 overs. ‘‘He’s a bit of a wild cat,’’ Griffen said. ‘‘You never know what you’re going to get out of him. ‘‘He’s definitely a wicket-taker, but he can be a bit erratic at times and he’s quite fast. ‘‘If he gets going, he always seems to take a wicket, and he bowled well.’’ The Congs breezed to the target five down on the second day. Nick Callas was the glue that held the innings together with a steady 75 not out. ‘‘Best knock he’s had for the club I would say,’’ Griffen said. ‘‘He batted right through and ended up hitting the winning runs.’’ The Congs will meet Deer ParkArdeer in the grand final for the right to be promoted to the top flight.

WILLIAMSTOWN Imperials will get a shot at redemption in the Williamstown and District Cricket Association A1 turf grand final. The Imperials made light work of local rivals Williamstown Colts in a 136-run semi-final walloping at Fearon Reserve at the weekend. Imperials return to the big dance with bitter memories of last summer’s decider, when they were trumped by West Newport in the grand final after finishing on top of the ladder. ‘‘Redemption is a big thing in sport,’’ Imperials opening batsman Daniel Slattery told the Weekly. ‘‘Last year got past us and we get a chance to remedy that this year, which

but none better than man of the match Glen Robson, the top-scorer with 63 who then took 5-44 off 14.3 overs with his leg spin. ‘‘It’s the old saying, cometh the hour,

cometh the man,’’ Slattery said. ‘‘He’s our captain and he’s been our best player for a long time and continues to show that. ‘‘He had a weekend out.’’ The Imperials will meet Wyndhamvale in the grand final, starting on Saturday. The sides met just once back in November with the Imps prevailing. The Falcons, however, have a vastly different line-up to the one that played that day. ‘‘We actually don’t know much about them to be honest,’’ Slattery said. ‘‘The guys who have come in and done well, we haven’t really seen, and likewise they haven’t seen us. ‘‘It’s a little bit unusual going into a grand final.’’

It’s chocolate to boiled lollies for Woodsmen BY LANCE JENKINSON SPOTSWOOD’S era at the top of the Victorian Turf Cricket Association has ended. The Woodsmen were relegated from the senior division after a disappointing summer. Rubbing salt into the wound, the green and golds finished the season with the wooden spoon, having taken a heavy 160-run loss to Greenvale at McLean Reserve on Saturday. The Woodsmen went into the last day of the season optimistic about their survival chances after posting 8-264. But their bowlers couldn’t get the job done on a batsmen’s paradise with the Vales amassing 6-424.

The Woodsmen head back to the second tier for the first time since 2005-06. Yarraville Club’s stranglehold on the top flight is as shaky as it has been in five years. The four-time reigning champion will have to defend its title from fourth spot, which it did in 2010-11 when it won the flag. It lost outright to Keilor in the last round and missed out on a home final. Meanwhile, could it be a case of out Spotswood, in Altona North? North is ranked third in the north division finals and has its sights set on a premiership-promotion double. The finals campaign begins with a cut-throat semi-final against Tullamarine at Tullamarine Reserve.

FOOTSCRAY Edgewater has disrupted the finals plans of Casey-South Melbourne in the Victorian Premier Cricket. The fast-finishing Bulldogs won the first innings points after a stunning opening day’s play at Merv Hughes Oval. The Swans failed to apply themselves and were routed for just 76 in 38 overs. The Bulldogs’ reply (3-207) was swift as they took a 131-run lead at stumps. Wes Robinson (102 not out) and Travis Dean (50) dispatched the ball to all points. It was Robinson’s second ton for the Bulldogs since crossing from WA. CITY West Falcons have made a solid start to their Victorian Netball League premiership defence. The champions were forced to grind out a four-goal victory over plucky North East Blaze in the season opener at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. The Falcons unveiled a new attacking combination, following a campaign-ending preseason injury to first-choice goal shooter Kath Knott. Knott’s sister, Julia, was paired with Maggie Lind with success. Knott was on fire, landing 31 of 32 attempts for a 97 per cent return. Lind, who works farther up the court as a distributor and is also damaging around the cylinder,

landed 12 of 17. The Falcons will tackle the Boroondara Genesis at SNHC tonight from 9.40. Meanwhile, last year’s runnersup, the VU-Western Lightning, finished the first round top of the pops after a 65-25 thrashing of the Ballarat Pride at Bendigo Stadium on Saturday night. They will host Peninsula Waves in the other 9.40 game at SNHC tonight.
