PETA BRADY OUT ON THE STREET BY PETER WILMOTH

+ MELBOURNE’S BEST PROPERTY GUIDE

Peta Brady

was writing a play last year about the working girls of St Kilda and the dangers they face when Tracy Connelly, a veteran of the St Kilda area and a woman Brady knew, was murdered. It was in July that Connelly’s body was found in the van in which she lived with her boyfriend. The woman described as a “shining light” in this community had suffered a violent death. “It was pretty close to what I’d been writing – about a working girl’s death,” Brady says. “It was asking, ‘How safe are women on the streets of Melbourne’?”

I’ve met Brady at the Malthouse Theatre in South Melbourne to talk about Ugly Mugs, which draws on her experience working as a drug and safety officer in St Kilda for the past 15 years. The play, which looks at the experiences of prostitutes in the area, takes its name from a “newsletter” circulated among working girls warning them of violent, aggressive or threatening customers. Brady was one of the last people to see Connelly alive. In her outreach work, Brady checked on Connelly the night before she was murdered. “Tracy was a well-seasoned and very savvy street worker,” Brady says. “We do rounds in the car of the circuit, so we stop and chat to each person. (That night) it was, ‘Hi, how you going? How’s your night been?’ She seemed fantastic. Told us to take care. “We first heard that someone (had been killed) and we knew it was going to be someone we know, one of our clients,” Brady says. “And you go into the, ‘Who’s it going to be?’ And it doesn’t take long to find out – one phone call to the police. “We were heartbroken. You get your favourites and your nicknames and Tracy was definitely one of those we all liked because she was really nice. There was definitely anger for taking away someone who had so much more to give.” Brady orders a salad and a coffee. She’s deep in preparation for the play, in which she also stars as a street worker. She is soft-spoken, warm and empathetic. You can see why working girls would have opened up to her, shared their stories, taken her into their confidence. Brady, 41, grew up in Croydon in Melbourne’s east. She enjoyed after-school acting classes and went on to study performing arts at Ballarat University College. In her third year, in 1991, she scored a role in Neighbours, playing Cody Willis, “an ordinary girl that people could relate to, bit tomboyish, bit suburban, very Ramsay Street”, she says. It was a good gig for two years. “It was great. It’s factory work, doing it every day, four cameras. It was like a workout, and I learnt a lot from it.” After her character was killed off – the victim of a shooting – Brady went on to roles in several television series including Blue Heelers and Good Guys Bad Guys and onstage roles for the Melbourne Theatre Company. She also performed regularly for the Zeal Theatre company, taking into schools shows centred around drug education. She gravitated towards the world of the street workers she would see in St Kilda when she lived there. In 2000 she began working at a needle exchange program her friend was running at the Salvation Army in Grey Street and at a nearby community health service, working with homeless and disenfranchised people. Fifteen years later she is still there. She works with the same clients for both services: “When I see them out on the street I can lead them to the right agency, depending on what they need.” Over the years her community work has provided a financial buffer against the vagaries of an actor’s income, but she explains it was more than a regular pay cheque that drew her to this parallel career. “I think I was always going to be led into it,” she says. “I did psychology at Ballarat and swapped to acting.

I think if I didn’t become an actor I’d have become a social worker of some sort. The work interested me. “I was living in St Kilda. I thought I knew the suburb, but I didn’t until I started working in those areas. I saw the people I was eventually going to work with but I didn’t have an insight into their world.” In parallel with her outreach work in St Kilda, Brady acted, guesting on the TV drama Simone de Beauvoir’s Babies, Kath & Kim and the 2001 film Mullet. But the work was not consistent. “There were years of consistency then it sort of died off a little bit and I moved to the country. I had a lot more time to think about things.” She bought a property in Castlemaine where she lived for three years from 2005. “I found a nice little property up there; it was cheap at the time. It’s quite an artistic community. I was in a flat in St Kilda so it was about getting away and getting a garden.” Writing became a parallel career and even though there were roles – she had a small one in the mini-series of Christos Tsiolkas’ The Slap – four years ago she decided to devote more energy to writing. Back living in St Kilda, she wrote two plays that were performed at La Mama in Carlton, Strands, about a character with foetal alcohol syndrome, and Status Update, about someone online pretending to be someone they weren’t.

“i know women who wish they were were off the street and i know women who love it” – Peta brady

Her new work comes from the heart. As a mobile health, alcohol and drug-safety outreach worker doing the weekend shift, Brady moves around checking in with the working girls around St Kilda. It was hearing their experiences and about the threats of violence and harassment they face that inspired her to tell their story. She started writing Ugly Mugs 12 months ago. “The inequity for the working girls was bothering me, and the violence they had to face going to work and the law that helped embed that. It’s criminalised so they’re always hiding and it puts barriers in the way of connecting to services because they feel judgment.” While brothels can apply for a licence, street workers still take their chances with the law. How they are treated in a legal framework largely depends on the police, she says. Blind eyes turned by the police? “When they want to,” Brady says. “And when they want to do a clean-up then … [the women] are open to whatever’s decided. If the Grand Prix is on and they want a clean-up … “I’ve had horrible police and I’ve had fantastic police. The [fantastic ones] are supportive … Depends who you get, like anywhere.” Ugly Mugs focuses on several characters and stories, and addresses rape and murder. She knows the working

girls’ world well. “There’s a lot of strength there and a lot of humour. It’s not all victim but that’s the stuff that I’m talking about, because that’s the bit I don’t like. That they’re put in danger. That there’s a loophole. That men can seem to prey on people that are easy to pick up and they (the women) may not be able to access a service.” I ask about common themes among the women she works with. “I work on the streets and there are different layers of how in control of your work you are, and how your environment allows you to be in control of your work.” Three years after Brady began as an outreach worker, 26-year-old sex worker Kelly Hodge was murdered. “That had an impact on me. I was surprised. I expected it to be all over the front page of the paper; I expected everyone to be talking about it. Then you realise they get on the 10th page of the paper.” She says among the working women “there’s a lot of drug use – we give them condoms as well, it’s not all about needles. It’s about safety. They might tell us there’s a guy going round with a fake $50 note, which happened last week, so we pass that knowledge on to the next girl we see – ‘Look out for the white car with the fake $50 note’. It’s a Chinese whispers prevention (strategy).” There’s danger, and then there’s just street harassment. “It goes from stealing a bag or egging the girls to maybe calling them sluts or whatever out the window,” she says. The women find some solidarity by communicating descriptions of potentially dangerous – or harassing – clients. The Ugly Mugs publication is, she says, “a prevention program that is trying to say who’s out there; the girls do it for each other. It’s something they can all write down and the next person who reads it knows not to get in that (car) with the broken windscreen, or whatever. It’s an underground safety (guide).” In one edition, published in 2011, a sex worker writes about what the women put up with: “These two mugs have been seen driving around the St Kilda area late at night harassing women”. Another reports that, having been picked up by a “mug” and negotiating in his car, he said: ‘You know I can take everything you’ve got’. “It’s not like I’m out to get the mugs, either, because the mugs are their work,” says Brady. “It’s the bad mugs. I’m not out to say, ‘OK let’s go into some kind of Swedish law where they try and pick up the mug and take them away’, because that puts it more and more in the dark. The work’s not going to stop. It’s not going to go away.” She knows women who have tried to get out of the game. “Some have kids. People on the street can be young and be mothers. There’s not one age. I do know women who have got off the street. “I know women who wish they were off the street and I know women who love it. That’s their choice and why should I judge that? A lot of the girls that leave it get lonely and miss it as a lifestyle. It’s their friends, it’s a community, it’s what they know and they can get drawn back to the hub of that friendship.” Brady moved out of St Kilda three years ago, to Melbourne’s northern suburbs. “I love it,” she says, “being out of the community I work in.” She wants to write more “because I really enjoy it”. She’ll manage that around the work she does in her shed. “I have a big garden and big shed that I bumble around in, and I love it,” she says. “I’ve got a woodwork table and scavenge wood from around the streets, find stuff from hard rubbish and make things.” For Brady it’s a respite from a dangerous and often sad world whose story she is about to shine a light on. \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

provides a good snapshot of just Iinvanhoe how café-crazy Melburnians have become recent years. Obviously we must get a bit

anxious if there’s not a decent coffee in our immediate vicinity, because the shopping strip on Upper Heidelberg Road boasts a remarkable number of places that offer a diverse range of eating and coffee-drinking experiences. One of the best of these is Creatures of Habit. Attached to (but not a part of) the Quest Ivanhoe apartments, Creatures of Habit does a lot with what could have been a pretty soulless space. The raw timber panelling – on walls inside the café and in the cute sheltered courtyard at the entrance – and polished concrete flooring help give the place texture, as do the black laminated plywood tabletops and light shades made from coffee sacks. Timber and metal furniture, vintage Italian advertising posters and window seating that’s great for people-watching make this a comfortable and stylish place to spend time. There’s an earthy, relaxed feel to the place that, according to manager Frederica Panniello, is carefully cultivated. “Sandro [Costabile, the owner] has always wanted this to have an international feel and so we have people from all over the world working here,” she says. “I think it’s what helps give it such an easy-going atmosphere.” The menu is pretty easy-going, too. menu, it doesn’t offer any culinary tricks. But the standard of cooking is pretty good and there are moments that prevent the list from becoming a paint-by-numbers affair. On the breakfast list (served all day), for example, there’s an interesting take on a Caesar salad called a warm breakfast salad ($17) that combines leaves, bacon strips, croutons, avocado and feta with poached eggs on the top. It may sound a little bizarre, but it works well, with good texture and flavour. Another popular item is smashed avocado

and feta cheese ($15.50), drizzled with lemon juice, served with sourdough toast and topped with poached eggs. On the lunch menu, it’s hard to pass up the steak sandwich ($16.50) with all the favourites, from tomato relish and caramelised onions to fries and tasty cheese. Creatures of Habit serves good coffee, too (using Veneziano beans) and has a strong range of tea, smoothies and juices. It’s just the sort of well-run place you could easily imagine becoming habit-forming. \ Got any café culture suggestions?

Honda once named a vehicle the Acty Crawler, Mazda had the Bongo Brawny and there was Isuzu’s Mysterious Utility Wizard. My favourite silly name was Subaru’s Touring Bruce. At least you could spell all those; what are the people at the traffic office going to do when you try to register a pro_ cee’d? Probably give you another form and tell you to get it right this time. The thing is that, apart from its name, the pro_cee’d is actually a terrific car. It has a nicely flexible motor that sounds great as it’s winding up and a six-speed manual that’s light and fast. Get the launch right (the first time or two you’ll probably stall) and it’s quick off the mark and willing, all the way up to wherever you choose to lift off. This is combined with handling that’s surprising for a Korean car. It’s flat and direct through challenging corners with a really pleasing grip, and there’s a feeling of solidity that’s most reassuring

HEIDELBERG \ 39 ANDERSON STREET Bright and light interiors and great views steal the show at this immaculately renovated family house. With a zoned floor plan that offers multiple living areas, outdoor entertaining and a self-contained studio or home office, it caters beautifully for family life. The views begin from the elevated ground-floor entry, where a patio lifts you above the streetscape. An L-shaped lounge and dining room faces the patio, with a front wall of windows to take in the views and the silver birches. There are hardwood floors and cream and white interiors with striking feature walls throughout the living areas. A Jetmaster fire is set into a mustard-coloured wall. The central kitchen has been updated with Miele appliances and a high counter bench that serves as a discreet storage cabinet (just one example of how storage has been cleverly built in throughout the house). An extension has added two first-floor bedrooms (the main with superb views, an en suite and walk-in wardrobe), and a rear extension of the ground floor. A rear rumpus room is a great family space, with a wall of built-in cabinets for an entertainment unit (and storage). A wall of glass wraps around the room with views to the deck. The studio/home office is at the rear of the block, providing a comfortable and versatile space. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

This new double-storey residence, the front one of two on the block, provides low-maintenance modern living. With three bedrooms and a study, it will appeal to young families, professionals (especially those working from home) and investors who understand the increasing appeal of this location. Polished floors, white interiors and downlights create an ultra-modern aesthetic enhanced by an unadorned, streamlined look. The ground floor is dedicated to living spaces and a study. The north-facing lounge room is a bright space where timber highlights offset the white interiors. There is a sliding door from the dining area and kitchen to an east-facing deck, which is an easy extension of the indoor space. The kitchen continues the white theme, offset by a light-grey glass splashback. The stainless-steel Technika appliances fit in nicely and are matched with pendant light fittings over the Caesarstone breakfast bar. The three carpeted bedrooms upstairs are served by an immaculate bathroom and an en suite. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

LOWER PLENTY \ 75 ROSEHILL ROAD This family house at the end of a long driveway has three distinct living zones, providing lots of room to relax or hang out with friends. The casual living area at the centre of the house is where all the action happens. Polished floorboards in the lounge and meals area are repeated throughout the house. The kitchen, with granite benchtops, stainless-steel appliances and a tiled splashback, has uninterrupted views of the deck and over the pool – the coolest place to be in summer. Tall trees border the backyard, and a gazebo provides additional shade and another covered area in which to entertain. Pool views can also be enjoyed from the covered outdoor dining area. It has café-style blinds and ceiling fans, keeping everyone comfortable. This entertainment area can be reached from the formal living and dining zone. It has an open fireplace, ceiling roses and detailed cornices. The downstairs rumpus room, with blue carpet, open fireplace and exposed brick walls, is the perfect retreat in winter. It has been set up as a billiards room and opens to the backyard. The main bedroom faces the landscaped front garden. It has a walk-through wardrobe to an en suite with double shower and twin vanity. A large corner block with an established front garden is a great introduction to this three-bedroom house. An elevated central entry divides the sleeping and living wings of the house. All three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes. The large main has a north-facing garden aspect. Polished timber floors warm the interiors throughout, except in the kitchen and meals area, where a slate-tiled floor is a low-maintenance option. A split-level family and living area is set up with an upper level dedicated to a home theatre. The adjoining kitchen and meals has timber cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances, and a view of the backyard. A large laundry has a convenient second toilet, and provides access to the rear porch. The tiered garden has levels of flat lawn and a covered entertainment setting. The double garage with workspace has access to the rear garden as well as a front entry point. With ducted heating, air-conditioning, an updated bathroom, scope for further updating, and a big block, this house will have wide appeal. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

The quiet and hilly terrain of this Viewbank pocket has great family appeal, and so does this large brick house. Maple trees line the path to the elevated ground-floor entrance and from there the floor plan – with split levels and multiple zones – feels spacious. Large windows showcase the surrounding environment, as do front and rear balconies. The original 1970s interiors (including the now retro-cool tiles in the bathroom and en suite) are awaiting an update but present a project well worth the effort. The ground floor has a lounge and kitchen/meals area, two bedrooms, an open study, a bathroom and laundry. Stairs lead up to the first floor and down to the lower ground floor, where there are two double garages, storage spaces and a second kitchen. Upstairs, the main bedroom has an en suite and walk-in wardrobe, and a living space. All three levels present spaces that could be reconfigured. A blue-tiled pool and spa dominate the terraced backyard. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

An open-plan living area on entry, with kitchen, lounge and dining space, is a highlight of this three-bedroom house. Polished hardwood floors, white interiors and timber-framed floor-to-ceiling windows, including a wall of bifold doors to an elevated deck, create a bright first impression. There are great green views in every direction in this entertainment space. Black granite benchtops, timber cabinetry and stainless-steel appliances are the fixtures in the designer kitchen, while servery windows and french doors take care of the access to the outdoor setting. All three bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and carpet. The main bedroom en suite and the family bathroom have had impressive makeovers, with stone-topped vanities, frameless glass walk-in showers and tiling in creamy beige tones. The north-facing backyard is park-like, with lawn and a gated vegie patch. The 1140 square metres provide plenty of room to stretch out. \ EMMA HOUGHTON

Working from home is now an option with the fitted study while the original mudbrick studio, currently used for storage, would make a fabulous home office, artist or musicians retreat if desired. A fabulous opportunity to let your family enjoy a sought after Eltham pocket, it balances secluded tranquility with easy access to schools, parks, transport and Eltham´s main street.
