he horrifying fact of the matter is we bought some new scales. They are the accurate, digital kind, purchased to replace the clunky old ones that were much-loved and cherished for years, possibly because, as we’ve now discovered, they rendered the two adults in this house four kilograms lighter than was actually the case. Spring is sprung and so are we. No longer able to pretend we still sit within a healthy weight range. No longer able to feign surprise when we weigh in at the doctors, or pop onto someone else’s scales just to like, compare. And there we both were, telling ourselves everyone else’s scales were wrong. Our old scales were correct because we’d had them for so long. The situation is dire. Well not dire, but worse than we thought. The ubiquitous five kilos we and everyone else I know feels they need to lose, is now considerably more for the two adults in this house. It’s a number I’m not that keen to say out loud at this stage. And I hate this time of year, when the possibility of having to get out in public in short sleeves and summer dresses looms. I can’t bear to go through another hot season layering sarongs and scarfs on top of each other to cover bits I don’t want to share. (And I’m not going to say tuckshop-lady arms because my arms are an insult to tuckshop ladies, so lets just say that area in particular is in need of work). Being just that little bit overweight is the ultimate first world problem. We eat too much, it doesn’t make us look good, and eventually it will make us sick. The older one gets the less one cares about the looks bit, but the more important it becomes to not have weight hanging around our mid-section. Gaining weight is fun – it involves cooking and

socialising, tea and cake and roast dinners. Losing it involves abstinence, carrot sticks and focus, focus, focus. I’m trying my hardest to swap chocolate for fruit, wine for mineral water (just every now I’m just and then), and to ramp up the vegies and fibre. taking it I’m not alone. The great Spring Panic is one mint everywhere. Venture down to your local park slice at a right now and tell me the evidence isn’t all time over the place. People in spanking new Nike running shoes attempting to make it around the oval at least once, bootcampers, personal trainers and iPhones attached to Lorna Jane-wearing fast walkers pounding all over the pavement. It’s busier than the post-New Year resolution, first week of January at the moment. Will any of us last the distance? Will we get to the place we need to be and stay there? Will any of us ever win the great weight war, and sit comfortably and happily at a healthy weight. I’m just taking it one mint slice at a time. And unlike the old scales, which might have deigned to flicker a little bit after about a month of hard work, the new ones are much more responsive, and show every little bit of weight loss, even just a little point-something of a kilogram. Watching them go down can be quite exciting, which sounds pathetic really, the things that get you going in middle age. But there may be some good in bad. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au

ive years on, it’s hard to know what to make of Maha. Over two visits, dining at Melbourne’s one-time best new restaurant seesaws between really good and underwhelming. Fortunately the second visit is the better of the two, so maybe chef Shane Delia’s decision to quit his stake in Hawthorn’s St Katherine’s to concentrate on Maha (and his myriad commitments to TV, charity and self-promotion) is paying off. But on visit one it seems like Maha has lost its mojo. The décor – jewel-coloured carpets, dark woods, vivid walls, textures and textiles – looks faded and jaded despite the subtle lighting. The menu declares that Delia’s family crest means “Strength in Hospitality”, but there’s precious little of that in evidence. Bland waiters recite their lines before progressing to the next table to rattle off the same spiel. All rapid-fire delivery and no engagement. Though, credit where it’s due, the fact that Delia has a family crest is impressive. There’s a mix up with menus, and later with the cutlery. Dishes packed with enticing Levantine tastes sometimes want for technique, as in the 12-hour roasted lamb shoulder with pistachio and green olive tabbouleh. The meat has deliciously rich flavours but it’s baked dry. The standout of our six-course Latifa menu ($95 a head) is the “boat-smugglers stew” – a signature dish with a silly backstory. According to his PR agency, Delia met a man in Iran who smuggled hooch from Dubai. The smuggler took the chef to his island home in the Persian Gulf and treated Delia to a traditional fish and tamarind stew. In Delia’s tribute dish, the stew is anchored by a fat wad of slow-cooked pork, heady with tamarind and turmeric. There are red mullet pieces stuffed with prawn, cooked tempura style in a light chickpea and rice-flour batter, and some pretty watermelon radishes (all looks, no flavour). Fish and pork are terrific but it feels like a forced marriage. At meal’s end, faced with a $300-plus bill, I ponder the eating places I would have rather spent the money. But that was then. On the return visit a few weeks ago, there’s a revived energy to Maha. Bookings are as tough as ever. After three failed attempts we settle for seats at the bar on a Friday night. This turns out to be a good thing – the bar offers the best people watching in the place. It’s fun back here, especially with a killer cocktail such as the pomegranate sour, packed with antioxidants, vanilla vodka and egg white. “Personally, I’d serve this one as a dessert. Or any time,” my dinner date says. Cocktails aside the wine list is intriguing, with offerings from Lebanon and Israel, and expensive. Drops by the glass top out at $87; half bottles go up to $285. But if you dig deep you can find a Flametree Chardonnay from WA for $48 (as opposed to $18.05 at Dan Murphy’s). There are two pages of arak and raki for those who prefer shots of “lion’s milk” with their mezze. The food’s not cheap, either. You can à la carte at $25 an entrée and $40 a main, or choose from sharing menus priced from $75 to $125. We plump for the $75 Soufra option – four sharing courses divided into cold

roAStEd lAMB SHouldEr

and hot entrées, mains and dessert. There is so much food. A garlicky tarator dip smothered with a rubble of dried figs, walnuts and duck pieces. Arak-cured kingfish with an appealingly silky, slightly sticky texture, and fragrant with fennel. Of the warm starters, salmon with frozen yoghurt dust and jellied whey (much nicer than they sound) is like a marine candy with a flurry of flying fish roe. Chicken wings, deboned and stuffed with an odd-tasting sausage, are not much fun. A shellfish dish of (three) mussels, (three) prawns and (three) scallops clinging to saffron- and harissa-smeared balls of moghrabieh (fat couscous) gives great texture and flavours but skimps on seafood. Dessert is three tasters – a cannoli-style filled tube of ricotta dusted with cinnamon icing sugar, a small glass of peanut-butter caramel, and some bombolini-style doughnuts concealing a sliver of Turkish delight. Pleasant salty-sweet treats, none of them amazing. The wine matches ($55 with the Soufra menu) are more fulfilling. A trebbiano, a Lebanese rosé, a nice local pinot, a Moroccan shiraz … and for dessert we get to choose whichever sticky we want. Squee. A Cypriot Commandaria and Pedro Ximénez sherry smother the sweets but the Coal River late-harvest riesling is just right. A bit like the whole experience, second time round, at Maha. \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au

ue Pieters-Hawke tells a great story about being six years old when her father, Bob Hawke, was launching his political career. Hawke stood (unsuccessfully) for the seat of Corio in the 1963 federal election, which meant the family lived in Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula for a while. “I remember tramping around farms with him,” Pieters-Hawke says. “I was fascinated [by politics] even then. I remember when he came home on election night – they wouldn’t let me go to the tally room – I made him promise he’d wake me up and he did. I said, ‘Did you win, daddy?’ ‘No’, he said, and then he started explaining about DLP preferences.” It’s a touching vignette from the life of the Hawke family, so deeply immersed in politics of one form or another for so long. And it’s hard not to love the idea of a six-year-old being schooled on the preference system at midnight. It’s hard to imagine a better campaigner for the issue of dementia than Pieters-Hawke. Eloquent, passionate and decidedly no-nonsense, she has a deep understanding of the condition, and the effect it has on the sufferer and those who look after them. She was, after all, the main carer* for her mother, the much-loved Hazel Hawke, who died in May after some years living with dementia. (*Carers Week, 13-19 October)

challenging, I could work less … There is the heartache and the overwhelm that a lot of carers grapple with. “There were times when I was not in good shape and didn’t do well. But also it’s a massive enrichment. You can return something to somebody who’s given you so much, who you love. You care about the quality of their life so you do what you can to make a difference in that. There are a lot of funny moments and companionable moments and sweet moments, too.” “[Brother] Stephen and [sister] Ros came over when they could. I was mostly the primary person. My son and daughter were teenagers in the early stages and they were fabulous with mum. Grandchildren of people with dementia I think shouldn’t be protected, they should be included. That’s another reason for important and accurate information. “For younger children there are some good books out now such as Why Is Grandpa Different? To protect kids from the realities of life does them no favours. My kids are richer people [for this experience]. In the nine days before mum died we were all with her and the kids were there, too, and when she died. We have such ‘avoidant’ attitudes towards death that we suffer more than we should. It’s sad to lose somebody, but it is in the natural order of things.” She was very moved by the national grief when her

The Carer We’ve met at the Darebin Arts Centre, where Pieters-Hawke has just delivered a presentation to carers. She often speaks to those who have a partner at an early stage of dementia, as well as people who work helping provide services or support. “Dementia is a condition of symptoms that affect reasoning, thinking, behaviour, memory, perception, cognition, emotions, depending on where the brain damage is,” she says. “There are over 100 different causes of it and Alzheimer’s is the best known. “I talk about how important it is to connect with other people and learn about their experiences,” she says. “I talk about practical realities, ways to adjust thinking to make it a more productive and valued experience, both for ourselves and for the people we care for. And the importance of caring for ourselves as carers. It’s the oxygen-mask principle – you know the safety demonstrations on a plane. We’re no use to anybody if we don’t look after ourselves. A lot of carers don’t think to treat themselves as important. We tend to place ourselves last.” Learning how to care for a loved one with dementia is a “steep learning curve”, she says. “We are in situations where we’ve got a lot of grief or fear, hard stuff. As things change, you grieve some of the changes. I argue against us looking at a person as being lost. They’re changing. They are still fully experiencing their lives and that’s one of the things I talk about that’s very important, that we not be dismissive of their experience because they’re changing. “Dementia causes changes in the brain, which causes change in perception, processing, reasoning

8 The weekly review \ OCTOBER 16, 2013

and behaviour. But there are things we can learn and adjustments we can make that can help us relate to that in a positive way. “That doesn’t mean we don’t grieve those changes. We do. But if we reframe how we look at it away from the historical, very negative views of people with dementia, we can bring a much more positive set of attitudes to bear and we can also often create quite different outcomes.” Pieters-Hawke has written two books on the subject, Hazel’s Journey (2004), the story of her mother’s experience with Alzheimer’s, and Hazel – My Mother’s Story (2011), a biography. I asked Pieters-Hawke about her mother’s illness. “It’s gradual. You can have the disease for many years before you get the symptoms of dementia. In mum’s case it was gradual. There were different things to do with memory, with how she processed stuff, with being a bit more emotionally reserved. And you wonder. She didn’t want to go for diagnosis so I didn’t push her. And I didn’t understand then that there can be advantages in giving a diagnosis. Eventually that point came. “Then there came a time when you had to go round and help her get ready and be there and manage the timing [of outings], from her doing her own medication, to me making them up for her and then she got confused, so I had to give them to her each day.” Pieters-Hawke went round to her mother’s every day, and then moved in next door to her. For five years she was able to care for her at close range. Did it enrich Pieters-Hawke’s life? “Yes. And at times it was also very difficult and

mother died. “I was a bit amazed by the scale of it, to be honest,” she says. “I was moved by the absolute genuineness of the affection and respect. Very moved, very grateful and very appreciative of it.” I say that Hazel was regarded as a wonderful, warm, energetic and generous person. “Well, they were right in that respect,” she says. “Mum was incapable of artifice. She couldn’t tell a lie to save herself. What you saw was what you got.” Growing up a Hawke wasn’t always easy, she says. “I recall something my mother always said – ‘It’s roundabouts and swings’. There were aspects of it that were difficult, but there were also enormous privileges and opportunities. “There was a sense of exposure sometimes when you don’t want it, people judging and not having a clue. But there are also opportunities in what you learn and what you’re exposed to. “I had two fabulous parents as role models in life, each in very different ways. Very different people. You’ve said a fair bit about mum, and I think with dad there was a wholehearted commitment to being of service to the wider community. I never doubted the authenticity of his motivation. “I was very much inculcated with a sense that life lived just for your own selfish concerns is not a particularly valid or satisfying way, that the contribution is the stuff that holds community together.” Was it an interesting ride? “Dad did interesting things with interesting people, faced interesting issues. You learn a lot.”

Memories: Sue Pieters-Hawke at home in Sydney. She says she had “two fabulous parents as role models”. (Mick TSikaS)

Pieters-Hawke has used her profile to advance the cause of dementia awareness. “Once mum went public with having dementia – and people had the affection and respect and regret that they felt for her – I think it created a space in which to continue the work of advocacy that wouldn’t have happened with anonymity,” she says. “Your experience isn’t different at the end of the day, it just gives you a bit more of a platform to connect with people.” Pieters-Hawke lives in Sydney and is “happily single” after separating 10 years ago. “I get on very well with my ex-husband. He’s working in France and I’ve just been over and spent some time there. He works at a Buddhist retreat. I did a retreat and he looked after me, so that was nice.”

S

he says she loves being single. “You can be legitimately selfish. I spent my first 25 years growing up. My next 25 years very happily dominated by other people and their needs. Happily, you’re considering other people all the time. Now I can do what I bloody well like and I love it! It’s sort of like when you leave university and the world’s a blank canvas. I feel like that again. It’s fantastic.” She is a Buddhist. “I don’t bang on about that, but that is quietly very important to me,” she says. “I call myself a small-b Buddhist.” She is close to her family and often visits her father, now aged 83. “I had dinner with dad and Blanche the other night. Family’s still very important.” I asked about an incident at Brisbane Airport in 2011 when d’Alpuget and Pieters-Hawke reportedly had an altercation and police were called. “It’s a load of nonsense,” she says. “It’s nobody’s business. Look, shit happens in families. It’s nothing more than ‘Yeah, that shit happened’.” They’re good now? “I wouldn’t do it [visit them] otherwise. As I said, I’m selfish now.” The issue was reportedly sparked by Pieters-Hawke’s view that in d’Alpuget’s writing on Bob, Hazel was not adequately represented. “As is well known, I think there were certain misrepresentations made,” Pieters-Hawke says now. “I don’t think that it was done maliciously or deliberately, they didn’t know each other well, and had no reason to like each other. But I don’t think there was any ill will or anything like that.” Meanwhile, in her writings and presentations, Pieters-Hawke has a lot of work to do to try to raise awareness of dementia. She talks about the “baggage” of dementia, which she wants to break down. “It has such a spectre of negativity, of inevitability and of powerlessness – you don’t think there’s anything you can do. That’s one of the reasons we have to change our thinking. “My vision is to create a dementia-literate, dementia-friendly society so that when somebody receives a diagnosis, it’s still going to be tragic, but it’s not going to carry all the prejudicial, ‘There’s nothing I can do to make a difference’, stuff that goes with it.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au We Welcome your feedback @

o be honest, I had more use out of the stopwatch the function on my then digital watch as a 12-year-old when manual timing things seemed incredibly interesting. How fast one could slide down the entire length of the hallway in socks, or that car-trip game where you’d try to stop the timer on 10 seconds and not a microsecond more. Now, the stopwatch function on a man’s timepiece is used for more serious things: timing the perfect milk froth for a home-brewed latté or boiling an egg, for example. While we can all live without this functionality on our wrists,

watch-lovers never seem to get enough of chronographs and neither do watchmakers. No complication allows them the chance to flex their horological muscles quite like the variations on the standard stopwatch, such as split seconds, or rattrapante, meaning two seconds hands, and flyback that allows the wearer to restart the stopwatch with one push of the button instead of three.

1. Adopt the feminist label Claiming the title “feminist” seems to be a necessity. That doesn’t mean it has to say so in your Instagram bio between “cat-lover” and “single”, but it does mean you have to identify as a feminist and mean it. By claiming the label, you open avenues for discussion and bring about opportunities to change opinions. 2. Get involved in the conversation Feminism-flavoured content is bound to come up on your newsfeed sooner or later. Blogs, websites and all forms of social media are fantastic platforms to voice your opinions and hear what others have to say. Seventeen-year old Tavi Gevinson created rookiemag. com, an online publication for teenage girls to read, share and inspire – with a strong dash of feminism. It is just one of many such digital publications. 3. Accept yourself You’re a girl, and that’s a beautiful thing. Your gender should not limit your choices, decisions, opinion of self or way of life. Be who you want. Be you. \ Sammi TaYlor iS 16, livES in ElTham and aTTEndS CaTholiC ladiES’ CollEgE

I

would consider myself a feminist. I’m not talking about burning my bra. I do still shave my legs. So what does it mean to be a feminist, and more so, a teenage one? At its core, feminism is a movement that aims for the equal treatment of women in society. That sounds fairly simple, yeah? Many would argue that feminism is no longer relevant, that women essentially have the right to do all the things that men can. In Western society we can vote, most of us can marry who we choose, get an equal paying (or close to) job, and receive an education. Do we still need feminism in 2013? Hell, yeah, we do. It’s evident in the small percentage of female high court judges. It’s obvious in the fact that just 37 of 150 members in the previous House of Representatives were women. Tony Abbott’s cabinet has only one woman, among 19 men. How, when women make up almost 51 per cent of society, are we still so underrepresented in positions of power? Feminism is about change. It’s about eliminating “surprise” when a woman appears in a position of high regard. It’s about changing our attitudes towards women in the media, so that maybe our next female prime minister won’t be constantly reminded of her gender. Feminism is what’s going to make us stop saying: “You’re pretty smart, for a girl” or “You throw like a girl”. It’s about abolishing rape culture and slut-shaming and putting a stop to the apparent need to objectify a woman’s body.

Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering Public Lecture

Presented by Dr Brian J Boyle, SKA Project Director, Australian Square Kilometre Array Office Australia will be home to the world’s largest telescope, the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), which will become operational at the end of this decade. It is one of the biggest scientific projects in history that will generate a staggering amount of data about our universe, and has also become a catalyst for other projects, such as a supercomputer that is 100 times faster than anything on the planet today.

Professor Brian Boyle is the Australian SKA Director, and he will describe some of the revolutionary science that the SKA will undertake and the ground-breaking work that is already being done as part of the project. This year, Brian was awarded the Public Service Medal for his role in the development of the SKA program in Australia.

Be a good sport Education \ Children gain from activities outside the classroom, too, writes AngelA AllAn co-curricular activities improve behaviour at school and at home. “There is also a slight link between academic improvement and co-curricular involvement but it depends on what that participation is. Sport activities are better for general well-being and have great health benefits,” she says. Volunteering is another way to enhance your child’s skills and sense of connection with a school. This can be related to the curriculum, such as an environmental project extending to volunteering with a tree-planting day. “Research shows that when you volunteer or you help others or make a contribution to a communal project, that enhances your mental health and well-being, along with improving social skills,’’ McGrath says. “Children who volunteer also benefit from being around people who share similar values, learn new skills and feel good because they are contributing to the common good.” Volunteering Victoria chief executive Sue Noble agrees that volunteering broadens children’s experience and exposure and opens up new ideas. “It also gives them a sense of self-worth and of how valuable they can be to the wider community. It’s that diversity and making a contribution and being an active citizen from a young age. It also helps with skill development and makes them feel less isolated.” Noble says it is important to start with co-curricular activities your child is interested in.

Teamwork: Volunteering helps children build confidence. (fuse \ thinkstock)

“Start where kids have a level of engagement or involvement at the school, and make sure the activities are age-appropriate. Or consider an activity where a parent and child can volunteer together so it can be a bonding exercise. Don’t push kids to do something. It has to come naturally to them and be something they enjoy. It’s about being open-minded and creative, too.” McGrath says: “Avoid activities that are overly expensive, as more money doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. With programs that have specifically sprung up to help with social skills, you’d want to ask how they do that and get some idea of what opportunities your child may have for leadership roles.” \ aallan@theweeklyreview.com.au

A

s schools move towards the sharp end of the academic year, it’s easy to become obsessed with rankings and exams. But while academic achievement may be the main game, there is increasing evidence about the value of co-curricular activities such as sport, music and volunteering in helping children reach their full potential. School-related and community-based co-curricular programs help children develop confidence, identify their strengths and learn skills that are not always a focus in formal education. “These activities can help deepen relationships with the school in a way that doesn’t always happen in a classroom setting,” says Helen McGrath, professor at Deakin University’s School of Education. “Sometimes these activities are cross-age. For example, a school orchestra may include children from years 8 and 9. Children benefit socially from having cross-age contacts.” McGrath says co-curricular activities also give students the chance to showcase their strengths, and give them a strong sense of connection with the school in a more relaxed environment. As long as children aren’t overscheduled, co-curricular activities can help them overcome any social fears and develop leadership skills, she says. In later years, involvement in these activities may also be looked upon favourably on students’ CVs. McGrath says there are studies that suggest

His favourite restaurants, and he struggled to limit them, were The Bouledogue, Les Bacchantes, Millard and the beautiful creations of Falcon. Having managed a 1000 seat restaurant in Paris, and owning a café together in Toorak and Malvern, Sam says that word of mouth, great food and service is the secret to their success even in this age of social media and trolls.
