What does summer mean to you? Lately, summer means finding a lot more appreciation for the ocean. Growing up in Manchester in England, we never really had that. In fact, we never really had summer! How would you spend the perfect summer day? A perfect summer day would be spent enjoying an outdoor training session, followed by lunch with my son, Ethan, and a round of golf in the afternoon. Where do you usually spend summer months? At home – but my schedule is always dependent on work. What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? My earliest memories of summer are in England when the family used to go down to Devon, in the south

We all love the beach, and some of our best family memories are there. How would you spend the perfect summer day? At the beach and then some afternoon drinks at a nice wine bar with friends. Where do you usually spend summer months? At home in Melbourne. It’s always so nice and quiet as everyone is away – the best time of year!

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? The great alfresco dining and everyone always seems happier in the summertime. We just love to get out and enjoy the atmosphere.

What does summer mean to you? It used to mean preseason training but now it’s family time and a chance to recharge for a new year. And a great time to read the books that I put off all year.

What does summer mean to you? As a child there was always the anticipation and excitement of a new school year. There’s still that energy of what a new year might bring. How would you spend the perfect summer day? Lazing at home with a fridge stocked with fresh food and a house full of friends – barbecue cranking and tunes gently playing in the background.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? I spent six years living in Torquay, where I had the best beaches in the world at my fingertips. I now live in Sydney and the beaches are pretty good here, too.

Where do you usually spend summer months? Depends on work, but the last few years have been between Melbourne and Byron Bay.

Where do you usually spend summer months? I’m an Adelaide boy, so I always head back home, and my wife’s family are New South Welshmen. So we rotate. To throw another spanner in the works, my sister-in-law lives in Whistler, Canada – hardly summer but great snow skiing!

What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? It would definitely be the Slip ’n Slide on the front lawn with the detergent flowing and the sprinkler blasting. With water restrictions these days – kids don’t know what they’re missing!

What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? Backyard cricket and swimming. I was very fortunate to grow up in a house that had a tennis court and a pool. My two brothers and I spent all day playing sport. Blond hair, tanned skinned – fair to say, times have changed.

And what’s your most recent happiest summer memory? My two-year-old daughter, Milla, learning to swim and hold her breath underwater.

And what’s your most recent happiest summer memory? For Christmas, 2011, the whole family was in Adelaide at dad’s house. It was the first time for a long time that the whole Harley clan celebrated together. It was magic. Backyard cricket again!

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? The vibe of the Australian Open, the long, long daylight hours and the city’s outdoor evening venues are alive!

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? I love going to the Australian Open and the music festivals, like the Big Day Out and The Falls.

An early game of golf at the beautiful Spring Valley Golf Club then straight to the beach. Sharing good food, a few drinks with friends and watching the sun go down in St Kilda. Where do you usually spend summer months? I often head down the Great Ocean Road with family and have a few quiet weeks surfing and cycling. What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? Taping one half of a tennis ball and playing backyard cricket all day with my brother. And what’s your most recent happiest summer memory? The Christmas art displays around the city. What does summer mean to you? Time to unwind, be outdoors and recharge the batteries. I love the time to clear my head before setting goals for the year ahead.

What does summer mean to you? Family time, holidays and going to the beach. It’s a great opportunity to spend some quality time with my family and friends.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? Unstructured and spontaneous. It would definitely include swimming, laughter, a fresh salad and at least one extra-large gelati as the sun goes down.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? At Safety Beach having fish and chips as the sun sets with my parents, my brothers, and their families. We pull out a big table on the sand by my brother’s boat shed, sit around and watch the sun set.

The house is full and my last guest never leaves before 10pm.

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? The fact that a lot of people have left town. If I drive to my local shopping strip in Church Street, Brighton, I can always get a park.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? At Portsea when it’s warm, but with a cool sea breeze. There’s not a cloud in the sky, the older children are by the pool, the younger ones are on the trampoline and I sit with a girlfriend and chat. Where do you usually spend summer months? What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? Daylight saving meant more time playing outside with other kids, eating Sunny Boy ice blocks, ripping down the Slip ’n Slide and playing street cricket. Total freedom.

Where do you usually spend summer months? In my downtime, I go to Mount Martha with my family. As summer is party season, I always have a lot of corporate shows across Australia, so I also spend a lot of time travelling with my crew. What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? I remember going to Dreamworld when I was about 11. We took the whole family and mum’s family, too. There were about 20 of us and it was like living a real-world fantasy.

And what’s your most recent happiest summer memory? Summer makes me feel grateful. Time seems to stand still and you can just potter around. I’ve been spending heaps of time in the kitchen and baking treats. I made the cutest gingerbread men and a pineapple, mint and ginger sorbet.

And what’s your most recent happiest summer memory? I spent this summer with my five nephews and nieces. I get to relive my childhood summer memories with them. This year I bought them all water pistols and we played a trick on my mother!

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? Buying fresh fish at Vic Market, eating veggies from the garden, barbecues with friends, kicking back at the moonlight theatre, late-night swimming in the bay, attending the Aussie Open …

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? Everyone is outside more and is happier as the weather is nicer. The days are longer too, so we get to enjoy all that Melbourne has to offer for longer.

What does summer mean to you? Summer has always meant cricket. But with more free time and daylight saving during summer, hopefully it will mean more time on the golf course.

What does summer mean to you? Diving under waves, fresh salads, prawns on the barbecue, a crisp sav blanc, lots of afternoons with friends.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? An early-morning walk on the beach with my family, followed by swimming in our pool with the kids, and have friends around for an afternoon barbecue.

How would you spend the perfect summer day? Cuddles with my son, Henry, in bed, then breakfast on a deck overlooking a surf beach, followed by a swim and bodysurf. There would have to be a seafood lunch with the whole family.

What does summer mean to you? Summer means being able to spend time with my family and friends, particularly after not being able to see them as much during the netball season. It’s also a time for preseason training, which means feeling fit and healthy.

Where do you usually spend summer months? For the past 20 years I’ve been fortunate to spend the summer months travelling around Australia playing cricket.

Where do you usually spend summer months? Mainly in Melbourne, although we get away to the Mornington Peninsula or Hamilton Island.

What is one of your happiest summer memories as a child? Every year in January we went with family friends to a shack in Point Turton. What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? Having dinner outside on the deck at restaurants that overlook the water. Riva in St Kilda has a great view of the bay on one side and the boat ramp on the other. There’s always something amusing to watch.

What do you love about Melbourne during the summer? I’ve always loved taking part in the Boxing Day Test. Watching the tennis now I have spare time. Melbourne is the sporting capital.

Spending time with my friends at their shack in Point Elliot over New Year’s – going to the beach, having barbecues and, hopefully, learning to surf. musIC \ Shannon Noll pays his respects to the bush and bands that shaped his youth

G

rowing up on a farm was like one big adventure for Shannon Noll. He relished time spent riding horses and motorbikes, shooting rabbits and taking his stag hounds out to chase foxes. Long before he became a successful singer, the boy from the bush was also expected to help on the family’s wheat, cattle and sheep farm. Noll acted as rouseabout in the shearing shed during September school holidays and had to work the fields, sometimes on a tractor, for hours. He would listen to mix tapes, his favourite devoted entirely to Midnight Oil. Noll is now reliving those childhood days twofold, having recently embarked on a national tour dedicated to significant songs from his youth, and moving to some acreage on the outskirts of Gisborne. Turns out the adage is true: you can take the boy out of the country, but you can’t take the country out of the boy. Noll and his family settled in the Macedon Ranges earlier this year, wife Rochelle having grown up in nearby Sunbury. They had been living in the outer Sydney suburb of Lilli Pilli – a convenient spot while Noll established his music career – but he dearly wanted his three children, Cody, Blake and Sienna, to be surrounded by paddocks, not picket fences.

“A lot of the strength in the economy comes from smaller regions, and I think we’ve got to keep remembering that.” “I loved growing up in the bush and on a bit of property, so I really wanted that opportunity for my kids. You get a lot of life lesson’s growing up on the land, like how to fix problems when you’ve limited resources. But it’s also about being outside with nature and OK with your own company.” Noll’s children attend the local primary school and, while the boys have made the switch from rugby league to AFL at Gisborne’s junior footy club, Sienna has inherited Rochelle’s love of horse riding. There are also sheep, chickens and dogs on the four-hectare property, a far cry from the 1822 hectares Noll roamed as a child, but it’s enough for now. “It’d be good if it was a bit bigger so we could have more stock, but I think that’d be too much to handle, being away so much,” Noll says. “I’ve got enough on my plate as it is.” Noll juggles farming duties, such as fixing fences, with his thriving music career. Committing to back-to-back national tours, last month he finished the tour for his fourth studio album, A Million Suns. His current national tour is called In My Youth.

“It’ll be like going back to when we just played music for the sheer fun of it,” he says, hinting at the time he and his two older brothers, Adam and Damian, formed a three-piece outfit, Cypress. The trio rehearsed in the shearing shed and performed at local pubs. Some of the iconic bands whose songs will be covered on the tour include Midnight Oil, INXS, Men at Work, Australian Crawl and Cold Chisel. “It was probably the best era of Australian music we’ve ever had,” Noll says, adding that it helped cement Australian music on the world map. “Their songs are regularly on the radio, so even young people know the majority of the songs we’ll be playing. If you can get a broad listenership, then that’s just a testament to the quality of the songs as well.” The In My Youth tour is peppered with dates in regional centres, as Noll appreciates this is where many of his fans live. “Regional people and country people are loyal and if you get them on board they’ll stick with you, they won’t just move on to the next trendy thing,” he says. “I go out of my way to make sure I can get to as many of those places as I can, instead of doing one

big show in the city and expecting everyone to come in (from their home towns), y’know?” Having grown up near the central NSW town of Condobolin, Noll has always been a strong advocate for the value of rural and semi-rural Australians. “The place can’t run on the power of one city and state. A lot of the strength in the economy comes from smaller regions, and I think we’ve got to keep remembering that.” It’s largely the outlying communities that have supported Noll since his career famously began in 2003 after coming runner-up (to Guy Sebastian) on the first series of Australian Idol. His first single, What About Me, debuted at No. 1 on the Australian music charts, as did the album on which it appeared, That’s What I’m Talking About. Noll achieved the same success with his second album, Lift, and its debut single, Shine, which became a sporting anthem of sorts, performed at events such as the 2006 Australian Open tennis final. Shine he did, becoming the first Australian artist to score 10 consecutive top 10 singles on the ARIA charts and selling more than 1.3 million albums. Along the way, he has turned his hand to songwriting and won several ARIA and MTV Australia awards. Career highlights such as these are all charted in Noll’s biography So Far. It also details the tough times, such as the death of Noll’s father in a farming accident in 2001 and the drought that forced his family to sell their beloved farm six years later. The book was ghostwritten by a Sydney journalist who interviewed Noll for five hours a day, six days straight. Noll describes that experience as therapeutic. “It brought up a lot of stuff that I’d suppressed for a long time and going over it again brought back a lot of the emotion that went with it,” he says. “There’s a lot of joy and a lot of heartache as well. I think it’s good to relive that sort of stuff again and then put it behind you.” Despite his transition from farmer working on the land to singer touring the country, Noll never wakes up and pinches himself. “It’s a job too, y’know, there’s a lot of hard work and there are ups and downs.” While life away from the stage may be much simpler, Noll embraces the responsibility that comes with his public persona. “It’s amazing hearing feedback from people about what your music means to them,” he says. “That’s probably that biggest joy out of the whole thing. Resistant staRch \ aids the health of the intestinal region by fermenting and producing short-chain fatty acids. Once absorbed in the bloodstream, the acids assist in lowering cholesterol. The short-chain fatty acids produced are also associated with enhanced mineral absorption of calcium, phosphorus and magnesium. This translates to better bone health. Short-chain fatty acids are also believed to prevent bowel cancer by creating a healthier intestinal environment. Food sources include beans and unripe bananas, hi-maize breads and cooled starches such as rice and pasta.

The aim is to eat more high-fibre nutritious or core carbohydrate foods and to cut out or cut back on treat foods, such as lollies and doughnuts with little fibre and fast-release sugars. What about GI? Foods containing more than 10 grams of carbohydrates per serve can be measured via the glycaemic index (GI). Foods that are high in fibre tend to have lower GI values. This is a measure of the speed at which the carbohydrate enters the bloodstream. Slow release of the carbohydrate is better because it assists in maintaining a relatively steady state. This is beneficial for cognition, concentration, alertness and mood. Low GI, fibre-rich

At this time of year, fad diets, detoxes and meal-replacement shakes are the norm. An increased consumption of meat occurs at the expense of bread and beans as high-protein and low-carbohydrate foods gain attention. Breakfast skippers, coeliacs and the gluten-avoiders, Atkins followers and the Paleo warriors are at risk of consuming insufficient fibre, especially insufficient resistant fibre. The irony is that good-quality research led by nutrition and health experts advocates the benefit of dietary fibre in weight loss and weight maintenance. Perhaps this is something to think about. How much fibre do I really need? The NHMRC (National Health and Medical Research Council) recommend women consume 25 grams and men 30 grams of fibre a day. The research on resistant

starch is mounting and many nutrition professors now believe that 20 grams of resistant starch per day is required. It is easy to include more fibre into one’s diet by simply adding more whole grains, beans (chick peas, lentils and edamame soy beans), fruit and vegetables. Important Consideration If your current diet is low to moderate in fibre, increase your fibre in small amounts to avoid intestinal discomfort. Water should also be consumed to facilitate bowel movement. Aim for approximately two to three litres of water a day. Finally, fibre has exceptional benefits for overall health but it cannot undo the damage of excess toxins and processed foods. Next time you’re at a dinner party, consider asking your neighbour “how much fibre did you eat yesterday?” and “do you add bran or wheat germ to your morning fruit salad?”. Before you can say “fibre is the coolest superfood of them all” it will be a dinner-party staple.
