Individual design, with price certainty No two the same Each of the houses shown here is different to all the others. They have different owners, at different life stages, with different household arrangements, and are built on different sites with different orientations. Common attributes Each of these houses has shared attributes too. Each one was individually designed to an individual brief. Each one was optimally designed to the contours of its site, the path of the sun across that site, the retention where possible of existing trees, and the best possible capture of available views. Each met the distinct needs of its owners. Price certainty Here’s something very different. In all cases, the owners knew the price of construction before they were required to make any significant financial commitments. How did they have this price certainty—for individual design? Because they worked with experienced design professionals who fully understood house construction; design professionals embedded within a reputable builder. They worked with Fasham. A Better Way Fasham’s Brian Stacey and Rodney Smith are highly experienced residential designers. With over 70 years between them in design-and-build roles they have a comprehensive knowledge of house construction techniques, materials and timelines. They know when there is a better way; where that ‘better way’ may, for example, save energy costs, introduce more light, shorten construction time or allow reductions in the budget. Fasham is, in effect, a professional design studio within a building company. This structure ensures that all designs are ‘buildable’ for the quoted price, as all plans are estimated within Fasham before being presented to the client. Designer sensibilities But are they good designers? At the risk of stating the obvious we could observe that you don’t make it as designers, in any field, without having keen design sensibilities. And you don’t build the reputation that Fasham has built over its forty years, without being very good designers indeed.

Even watching television keeps us busy – you know that person who can’t keep their hands off the remote control and switches between programs like a bee on speed in a field of daffodils. Then there are the crime dramas with immaculately coiffed detectives adjusting holsters and delivering snappy jokes as they bend over bleeding, writhing bodies. Every character runs and screams for more of something, anything, but whatever it is they need it and they need it now! Notice the transitions from story to story during news and current-affairs shows. Each story finishes with a segue into the next story with an unanswered question or a slight nod of the head by the presenter. Miraculously, a cut to a new camera angle designates the shift from two minutes on mass starvation to five minutes on Miranda Kerr’s post-baby body. By the time the news is over, I feel and look like a docile maggot. I’ve switched off my television. Silence is my new friend. Dhav Naidu suggests that you indulge a little with your make-up this season.

t

here are few truly great make-up artists in the world. Way Bandy, bless his cotton socks, was arguably one of the first celebrity make-up artists in the 1970s. He was the catalyst for the drop-dead looks at Studio 54. After him there was a string of make-up pundits, from Serge Lutens to Tyen to Kevyn Aucoin. If you think I am suffering from memory loss, let me assure you that, yes, I know that Maksymilian Faktorowicz, better known as Max Factor, was the very first make-up celebrity, but that was in another era. Currently, the go-to person for all things make-up is Pat McGrath; her passion, knowledge and expertise is second to none. The make-up artists’ make-up artist has to be Peter Philips, who is Chanel’s resident make-up director. And the high-profile parvenu of the beauty world is without a doubt Alex Box. They are the trinity of beauty right now, and between them they set what is hot or not for the season. “Make-up transforms you” was what Serge Lutens said to me eons ago, and it has always stayed with me. He also advised that make-up is a good servant but a bad master. Tyen, who started in make-up and blossomed into a photographer, on the other hand told me to forget everything you know and visualise what it is you want to say. Make-up is the one thing with which you can play without dire consequences. If you don’t like what you’ve done, you can always wipe it off and start again. Recently, McGrath lamented backstage that people are not into make-up like they used to be. In the 1950s and ’60s women would not leave their homes without their face and hair done. Appearances were everything. How times have changed. So this season I am imploring you to indulge and unmask the drama of make-up. Take the time, explore and have some fun. There are few rules when it comes to make-up – get yourself some excellent complexion products and experiment with colour. Forget the confusing rules that are often barked at you; there is no right or wrong when it comes to the art of painting your face, just cultivated style and taste. \ dnaidu@theweeklyreview.com.au

tHeatre \ Melbourne theatre company Four Larks talks to MYKE BARTLETT about their new show.

Hark the Larks other people’s attempts to explain and interpret what is happening to her.” He pauses for dramatic – or possibly comic – effect. “And chaos ensues.” Certainly, chaos seems a distinct possibility in a show that includes original, live music, dancers, singers and unusual stagecraft. But the Larks have a history of bringing an impressive sense of order to their performances, while allowing the audience to decide for themselves exactly what they’ve seen. “It’s always defined by what the audience brings to the table,” Peters-Lazaro says. “We carefully structure the aesthetic and musical backdrop, knowing people take in information in different ways, so it depends who’s looking at the work.” The trio are aware that performing at the Malthouse will mean a very different crowd from those at previous

our Larks have crept up on the Melbourne theatre scene over the past three years. Their mantelpiece is already heaving with awards for their unique blend of dancing, music and design, but April sees the theatre troupe’s first venture into the mainstream. Awarded the coveted status of “Company in Residence” by the Malthouse Theatre, the group say their new digs mark quite a change from past venues. “We were performing in a smash repair shop last year,” Sebastian Peters-Lazaro says. “We’re drawn to non-traditional spaces. We like to challenge people’s expectations as they’re walking into a show.” Peters-Lazaro is one third of the confusingly numbered Four Larks. He and fellow American Mat Diafos Sweeney first teamed up with Melburnian Jesse Rasmussen while at university in California. The two Americans have since made Melbourne their home, excited by what the theatre scene has to offer. “It’s a scene that doesn’t really exist in LA or San Francisco,” Sweeney says. “There’s lots of support for independent work here.” The Larks have certainly taken an independent approach to theatre, putting on shows in backyards, abandoned buildings and alleyways, with a company composed of friends, actors and local musicians. Their sets have generally been forged from found objects and recycled materials. For their latest production, they’ve been using old timber from a nearby building site. “They were doing a tear-down of a house next door, so we got permission to use their discarded bits and pieces,” Peters-Lazaro says. “We always make amazing friends at hard rubbish or the resource recovery centre at the tip.” Presumably this is where their self-proclaimed tag “junkyard opera” comes from? “I also think there’s something about the term opera that lets people suspend their disbelief a little bit. You go into opera knowing you’re going to see something fantastic and fabulous and you don’t question why everybody’s singing all the time, you just kind of go expecting something heightened.” There’s a strong sense of the fantastic in the Larks’ approach to theatre. Going to one of their shows feels like embarking on an adventure into a carefully constructed world. Just getting to their Brunswick studio is a quest in itself, with the location a closely guarded secret. “We like to start the adventure before you get into the theatre,” Rasmussen says. “We try to create a complete little universe somewhere and work quite hard to create an entry point for an audience that’s exciting. You can only enter this little world by this particular passageway that we will lead you through.” Blindfolded? Rasmussen laughs. “It’s usually not quite that dramatic.” The Larks’ new show, The Plague Dances, finds inspiration in the apocryphal story of a mediaeval village whose residents, gripped by a dancing fever, partied themselves to death. Debate still rages as to the cause of the mania and, in tackling the tale, the Larks have embraced this confusion. “We’re really interested in exploring the idea of shifting perspectives, looking at this event from the inside and the outside,” Rasmussen says. Sweeney elaborates: “The experience is viewed through the perspective of a young woman who has an unexplainable dancing affliction. She arrives in this really isolated and traditional town and follows

shows. In the past, they’ve drawn crowds more accustomed to band gigs than Ibsen plays. Peters-Lazaro says the trio are fired up by the challenge of wooing a more traditional theatre crowd. But this crowd should be ready for a few challenges. “Our audiences are active, present, processing, bringing their own opinions and backgrounds and, yeah, having a good time. You know, it’s not work. They’re there for a joyful experience.” \ mbartlett@theweeklyreview.com.au » Tower Theatre, the Malthouse, 113 Sturt Street, Southbank. interview

\ peter wilmoth meets sally fitzgibbons

BeLLS’ i t was when Sally Fitzgibbons, aged 11, first paddled out on a surfboard with her father that she felt the addictive thrill that surfers experience. She loved running and might have been a star on the track, but surfing got its salty grip on her early. “At 11 I was playing a lot of sports – anything I could get my hands on. I had that dream in my head that I wanted to be a professional athlete. I thought, ‘I’ll keep trying all these sports; this is what I want to do for a career’.” She remembers the first waves she caught. “At the time it felt to me like a six-foot wave but it was probably only two foot. I felt that whole adrenalin rush. I felt like running up the beach, ‘Oh dad, did you check that out’?” It’s the dream of so many Aussie kids – their parents watching them ride a wave. But little Sally had bigger dreams, especially when she started exhibiting precocious skill in the water. It has been a 10-year journey from that little girl impressing her father to this week defending her title at Bells Beach, a major breakthrough for her last year after finishing runner-up in four contests the year before. As she rang the bells that day at the event’s 50th anniversary – only the winner is ever allowed to ring them – she knew it was a victory made more impressive by beating Australia’s four-time world champion Stephanie Gilmore, who is a friend and has become the sort of rival that strong competitors need for inspiration. So where did this apparently ready-made champion come from? Growing up in the remote town of Gerroa, on the New South Wales south coast, Fitzgibbons wasn’t alone in wanting to be in the water every day. She was sports-mad – she loved touch football, soccer, cross-country running – so could turn her hand to anything. Soon she was holding her own in the surf with her older brothers. One brother, a year older, started competing. “I thought, ‘I better go along and watch’,” she says. “And then I thought I may as well go in it. The first event I made the final and got second so I was like, ‘Wow, this is unreal’. The very first wave of the event I caught this amazing little runner and was like, ‘I am going to keep doing this! World titles here we come’!” She wasn’t far off the mark. Fitzgibbons’ rise since has been phenomenal. As a 14-year-old she won the Association of Surfing Professionals Pro Junior, an event open to any female surfer 21 and younger. In 2009 she qualified for the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour faster than any man or woman before her. The victories and stunning results have flowed from there – in 2010 she finished second in the world to Gilmore and last year was again runner-up on the women’s tour, this time to Hawaiian Carissa Moore. In February she won the Australian Open, defeating 2004 world champion Sofia Mulanovich and last month she won the Hunter Ports Women’s Classic in Newcastle. She’s on a roll. Of all the sports she could have chosen to excel at, Fitzgibbons chose surfing because, as she said, “it’s something you can’t master”, those myriad permutations from swell, wind and every other variant that the ocean can throw up. Fitzgibbons has Next Big Thing all over her, and with her

10 The weekly review \ april 11, 2012

glamorous looks, big talent and easygoing nature, sponsors are queuing up. This year she hopes to take No.1 spot. “It’s always that ultimate goal. I threw everything at it last year.” But she hasn’t had it all her own way. Just before Christmas last year, Fitzgibbons wiped out badly at a dangerous break called Cloudbreak in Fiji, fracturing her wrist and sustaining ligament and bone damage. “I fell awkwardly. Rolled me on the reef, put me back in my place, that’s for sure. It’s been a bit of a sweaty summer not being in the ocean.” Fitzgibbons was out of the water for four weeks and was forced to train on land. “I did a lot of running – got a little bit carried away, so I’ve had some knee and foot injuries as well. So it’s been a battle of a pre-season but I think it will come together in the end.” Back in the water, Fitzgibbons surfed with a wrist guard. The injury didn’t stop her winning the Australian Open in Manly in February. I asked Fitzgibbons about Gilmore, who sustained a wrist injury after a bizarre attack near her Tweed Heads apartment just after Christmas in 2010, an injury that threw the then world champion off track for a while. “Steph’s a great friend of mine,” she says. “She’s a great champion – four world titles. It was such an unfortunate thing to happen and quite bizarre. She’s definitely done it hard. Her surfing last year was still right there. Things didn’t quite fall her way and I think this year she’ll be hungry. There’ll be new rookies on tour; some exciting match-ups.” It’s not just veterans such as Gilmore that Fitzgibbons has to worry about. At 21, almost a veteran herself, it’s the rookies she has to be careful of. “The majority of the girls are between 17 and 21,” she says. “A lot of girls are going for that title who have the focus and talent to achieve it. It’s exciting to be a part of it.” I asked how her surfing older brothers have coped with their sister outstripping them in the waves. “In true brother style they never say I’ve got too much talent; they’re always there to knock you back down – a good sibling rivalry,” she says. “I think that’s what pushed me through my teens, surfing with them when I was at the bottom of the food chain and they’d hassle me out in the

water and I’d have to really work hard to get my waves, and when I did I deserved them. “The boys taught me a lot about my surfing; how to approach different waves. Unfortunately they can’t travel with me but when they can they get to the events.” She still surfs with her father. “Dad and I still go and get waves together. A lot of the time he tries to weasel out of it, saying he’s going to film. You know those beautiful days when it’s clean and the sun’s out and it’s two-three foot? I try to get him to come out when it’s all ugly and messy, ‘Come on dad, you’ve got to go in in the bad conditions as well as he good’.”

S

he likes the fact that surfing is a sport at which you can still compete into middle age. “Even watching Kelly Slater going on 40 years old and he’s won his 11th world title. It’s definitely a sport you can keep going at, and want to keep improving and keep the fitness in your body.” Fitzgibbons says she enjoys hearing about the legends of her sport and respects the history of it. “I do have a sense of that. You look at old pictures of people surfing Bells and they’re in footy jumpers and shorts. We’re in high-tech wetsuits they’ve been developing for years. And the boards were single fin and you’re in awe of (those guys).” With prizemoney getting bigger and sponsors supporting surfers, Fitzgibbons knows she has come into the sport at a good time, when a career is possible. As one of the sport’s glamour figures, she also has opportunities to model. “It’s definitely an exciting time to be part of the sport. It’s really professional compared to 20 years ago when it was regarded as bit of a rough sport. “There are parallels to the lifestyle. The companies get us to cruise around in the latest product and have a lot of fun and do photos and videos … After working so hard and training all week you get the odd day here or there getting your hair and make-up done and feel like a princess.”

The girl from the small coastal town has become a worldwide surf star, stopped in the street for autographs, admired for her naturalness amid all the crazy hype of fame. “It’s quite foreign, coming from a small town – there are only 500 people in my town Gerroa – and have people come up to you and recognising you and you start getting bits and pieces in papers,” she says. “It’s strange when people come up to you and ask you for a picture and an autograph and they’ll say, ‘You made my day’ and I’m sort of thinking, ‘You’ve actually made my day, I’m quite surprised you recognised me’. It’s exciting. I’m growing. And it’s great to get more and more support from fans.” Her friends keep her feet on the ground, Fitzgibbons says. “Going home it’s great to hang out with all my friends. They definitely keep you grounded. You can’t wait to get home and do the simple things and skate on the street with them and go to movies, that kind of thing. “You come home, it’s uncrowded, there’s no one in the line-up, friends are yelling and you’re having a good time.” When she surfs at home she doesn’t get the star treatment, with surfers often dropping in on the wave she’s already on. “Happens quite a lot, especially in the really crowded spots. In the line-ups it can get quite aggressive. A lot of the time these guys are quite aggressive, so you try and work your way to the line-up … These guys can be quite territorial and think like they own the line-up. I try not to get into any verbal fights.” She talks about a macho culture associated with surfing, especially among older surfers who have surfed for many years at one break. “Some of the guys out there in their 40s or 50s, they’ve been surfing a break for maybe 40 years and as it gets more and more crowded it gets to them and they don’t want anyone in the way of their line-up.” Out of the water she is interested in pursuing a career that’s associated with surfing. “I’d like to help develop new products. There’s a few things on the horizon.” She’s wowed the surf magazines and now the mainstream media is impressed. Fitzgibbons appeared on television recently and veteran sports host Ken Sutcliffe told her: “You really do represent your sport well.” So she’s right. For Fitzgibbons there are a few things on the horizon – and they’re not all waves. \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au » The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach is on until April 14 we welCome youR feedBACk @ www.theweeklyreview.com.au/interview april 11, 2012 \ The weekly review 11

eep in old Plenty, beyond the dust and heavy machinery of the new developments off Yan Yean Road, a thickly hedged driveway opens to sleepy Bellavista Court. It snakes across the hillside, finally revealing its pot of gold at the end. Architecturally, this handsome two-storey residence is equal measure Edwardian classic – with its red-brick shell and elaborate leadlight windows – and Southern-style manor with its vast wraparound verandah. It has a commanding presence on the 2.2-hectare block but, almost ironically, is completely hidden from the outside world. The vendor lauds the property’s absolute privacy. She says there are drapes here that have never needed to be closed, simply because there are no neighbours in sight. This is, however, no house for a hermit. It was clearly designed with entertaining in mind. The forecourt has ample guest parking, and inside there is enough room to hold several parties at once.

Guests can hang their hats in the main entrance foyer before joining the throng in the expansive downstairs rumpus. Kitted out with a full wet bar and lined with timber dado walls and rich Sydney blue gum floors, this space is equally suited to high-end entertaining as it would be to playing pool with mates. The nearby covered terrace ensures the party can spill outside in the warmer months. When the party dies down, guests can retreat to the downstairs guest bedroom, which has a shower nearby. But should they be after more privacy, there is always the detached self-contained cottage nestled deep in the gardens. With its own parking bay, kitchenette and bathroom, this cottage would be just as suited as accommodation for live-in relatives or as working studio or home office. Clients could easily come by without setting foot in the main house. Built just 10 years ago, the residence has the good fortune of appearing to be established and new at the same time. Much of the everyday living spaces are on the

Morrison KleeMan, 9431 2444 26-32 Bellavista Court, Plenty Price: $2 million – $2.2 million expressions of interest: Closing April 16 at 5pm

Fast facts: Luxurious house on large landholding, second house/cottage on site, living and accommodation wings, en suite, great privacy, bar, Syndey blue gum floors, leadlight windows, plantation shutters, open fireplace, granite designer kitchen, resort-style outdoors with 11-metre fully tiled pool, spa and palm-filled garden, close to schools, shops.

second storey, allowing each room to benefit from views of either the vast open spaces at the front or the immaculately presented country garden at the rear. The central timber staircase is crowned by a stunning arched window, which helps to fill the core of the house with natural light. The heaviness of the timber finishes is well balanced with the sheer volume of light this house soaks in through its windows, many of which open to the sweeping front verandah. There are two distinct wings up here; one for accommodation, the other for living. The east wing houses the luxurious main bedroom, which opens to the verandah and includes a granite-clad en suite with twin vanities accessed via the dressing room. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a bathroom with separate spa, shower and toilet. The west wing is where the family comes together. The elegant dining room, dressed up in decorative cornices, is the ideal setting for Sunday dinners. Everyday meals can be enjoyed in the vast family hub, which, like the main bedroom, nestles beneath timber-lined cathedral

ceilings. The beautifully presented space is wrapped in Federation-style leadlight windows and plantation shutters. A central fireplace has timber surrounds. The nearby kitchen is a decorative feature in itself. It has dual ovens, a walk-in pantry and a vast granite island bench, which makes the ideal buffet for big casual meals. The family hub is accompanied by a second covered outdoor entertainment area, this time opening out to the 11-metre fully tiled pool and paved poolside terrace. There is also a full outdoor kitchen on hand for when the weather is too good to step back inside. The surrounding palms and the raised spa lend this corner of the property the glamour and luxury of an exotic five-star resort. But one of the greatest joys life at 26-32 Bellavista Court is the knowledge that, notwithstanding the open spaces and absolute privacy, you are just minutes, not hours, from schools, shops and the rest of the outside world. \

eltham First impressions don’t always have to be big. On Sunray Court, it’s this property’s quiet beauty and understated charm that grab you and draw you in. This pictureperfect Federation-style house hugs the corner of two quiet streets; the sort of streets for local traffic only. Built from reclaimed bricks and dressed up in fretwork, this property is an easy fit in Eltham’s exclusive Woodridge Estate. The border of greenery is an early indication of what to expect of the garden. Out back, a large evergreen elder shades the patio, which is positioned high enough on the 1029-square metre block to get full views of the cottage-style garden. It is flush with flowers and bound by high James Stirling hedges. All this, set to a backdrop of treetops, can be soaked up from the Jacuzzi. Inside, there are just as many creature comforts. The elegant lounge has a gas fireplace with Federation tile surrounds. A second fireplace adds warmth to the nearby family hub. Slate floors make a perfect companion to the recycled Baltic pine cabinets and benches in the kitchen. It has an old-style Smeg oven and gas cooktop with tiled splashback. The turn-of-the-century theme is consistent throughout, from the brass light switches to the claw-foot bath, which is framed by an expansive leadlight window in the family bathroom. Accommodation is as generous as it is comfortable. The main bedroom has a retreat area as well as a walk-in wardrobe and beautifully tiled en suite. \ liam carter

Not unlike the nearby Bundoora Homestead, this property has a majestic presence in the exclusive Mount Cooper Estate. Standing tall on a corner block on the high side of Warramunga Road, the property has views over the rooftops to Norris Bank Reserve and the hills beyond. The views are best enjoyed from the balcony off the expansive main bedroom, which also includes an en suite and separate toilet. The other three bedrooms open to a teenagers’ retreat. Below, the study by the entrance could easily be used as a fifth bedroom. It is close to the laundry and guests’ powder room. The vendors chose Henley Homes to build their dream house 10 years ago and did not skimp on the extras. The ceilings are extra high and there is a large spa in the family bathroom. A formal lounge and dining room at the front complements the open-plan family, meals area and kitchen, and the rumpus at the rear. The property includes a detached double garage with access to Banhul Place. \ liam carter

It is little wonder this 20-year-old property is on the market for the first time. It is hidden on a sleepy street and backs on to Crown land. The vendors have happily called this 1269-square metre corner of the world home since the area was subdivided in the early ’90s. A Tuscan-style courtyard bound by hedges makes for a quiet hideaway at the front. Out back, the family hub seamlessly connects to the covered outdoor entertainment area, which has uninterrupted views of the Eltham North Reserve. The block slopes gently towards the views and includes some lovely garden terraces. Inside, the charm continues in the split-level dining and lounge area, which is lined with timber boards and large windows. Nearby, two bedrooms share a large family bathroom with bath and separate toilet. The main bedroom has an en suite. An additional bedroom has been carved out of what was once the double garage, ideal teenager’s accommodation. The remainder of the old garage is fitted as a workshop. \ liam carter

rosanna

In a suburb populated by 1970s brickveneer houses, this 1940s weatherboard cottage is a rare delight. So authentic is its country charm that it’s as if the property has been plucked from a hillside near Daylesford and planted on this quiet Rosanna street. The old red-brick chimney by the front door and the fretwork on the window eaves and corrugated-iron veranda are telling signs of the property’s wartime vintage. Inside, the house has been smartly updated without interrupting the country aesthetic. Polished boards make a delightful companion to a palette of soft green and cream. Although modest in size, the house has a large open-plan living space that combines

the lounge, meals area and kitchen. The kitchen impresses with vast timber benches and a blue oven matched with blue-accent tiles on the splashback. Double glass doors lead to a covered three-metre deck. It overlooks a manicured back lawn with cubby. Accommodation is nicely zoned across the floor plan. Three good-sized bedrooms face out to the street and, through double-hung windows, have views of roses and hedges in the front yard. The cottage gardens are kept healthy with ample tank water. There is a smaller fourth bedroom or study by the family-sized laundry and side porch. The bedrooms are served by a powder room and large central bathroom with separate bath and shower. \ liaM caRteR

Only two years old, this three-bedroom house has several entertainment areas, all with modern finishes. Large, glossy porcelain tiles pave the way to the openplan living and dining area, overlooking the backyard. The kitchen – with Baumatic stainless steel appliances and stone benchtops – joins the meals area, which opens to the outdoor entertainment space. This is under cover and is a great spot to relax, irrespective of the weather. Aside from the trimmed trees that line the fence, the backyard is fairly low maintenance. This means you can enjoy the lifestyles of Heidelberg and Ivanhoe. The main bedroom is downstairs and has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. A study is nearby, while two more bedrooms are upstairs. They have built-in wardrobes and share the stonecoloured bathroom. The high windows in the bedroom also offer treetop views. The garage can be reached from the large laundry and a powder room is close by. The house also has reverse-cycle air-conditioning and is close to the Waterdale Road shops and transport. \ bianca villarosa
