RACHEL BERGER\ A Risotto of unCERtAinty

A

ccording to The Mapping Social Cohesion Survey by Monash University, released last week, we’re confused about the number of migrants coming to Australia. We’re fed up with low-rent politicians and concerned that the gap between rich and poor is too large. Welcome to my life, a risotto of uncertainty and neurosis. Much as I try to get to the truth, I know nothing, because we’re told nothing. And it’s not just the news, it’s everywhere; I feel as though I’m always hungry for accurate and completed details. As if I’m permanently stifling a belch because I’ve digested too much information thickened with artificial colouring and additives. We are living in a constant state of suspense, a kind of incompleteness, as if every week has a cliffhanger ending and we’re never going to get to the bottom of the plot because there isn’t one. We only have ourselves to blame, because we want everything fixed, paid for and delivered in less time than it takes to say “cash or credit?”. From two-minute noodles to quick-acting pain-relief drugs, if it’s not fast, forget it, we’re over it. Once upon a time, a letter was complete in itself and a phone conversation was a dialogue. Now, a conversation is a bunch of words frying our brains via a smart phone. And the conversation is often taking place while the person on the other end is driving, cleaning or

“From two-minute noodles to quick-acting pain-relieF drugs, iF it’s not Fast, we’re over it.”

emptying their bladder. Text messages are the last word in the no-dialogue conspiracy – R U with me? Emails and text messages almost always end in an uncompleted communication; “Let’s discuss” or “Speak later – OK?”. An email will end with a request for a discussion, a phone-call will end with a request for an email and a voicemail message will tell you that the person you are calling is busy, but if you leave a message with your details, they’ll get back to you. All this equipment is in a state of suspended communication – we’re all on hold and nothing is getting done. “Message bank” means you can leave bits of yourself everywhere without ever actually having to materialise in the flesh. The other night, in the chocolatey dark of my kitchen, the only sign of life was the blinking red light of my answering machine. I pushed the button and a friend’s voice filled the room telling me to check my email for a message she’d sent responding to an application form

we’d both received in the post and to which we were expected to respond to within seven days. Every new message demands that we come, send, deliver, meet with and pay for! The only way we can survive is to constantly defer every action. At night, I no longer count sheep, I drag all the dross of my life across an imaginary desktop into the Trash icon. We’re constantly avoiding or missing each other and moving too fast to fill in the blanks. There are people, such as doctors, dentists, politicians and TV producers who are too busy to tell you they’re busy – they employ people to tell you they’re busy. We’re no longer patrons, patients or passengers, we’ve been reconfigured to customers, clients and consumers; wind-up toys all moving in the same direction to God-only-knows what end. My fear is that we’ve grown so accustomed to bite-size nuggets of useless information that the full-flavoured taste of truth is too hard to digest. How do you prefer your truth, smooth or crunchy? \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

With a new album and her own record label, Joss Stone is taking charge. She talks to HARI RAJ. Stone deft: Music to management to acting – Joss Stone juggles them all. (paul conroy)

I

n the category of persistently irritating things, journalists who write themselves into a story rank alongside the current leader of the Opposition and that cold I seem to develop each winter that dallies until well into spring. But every once in a while it serves a purpose. It is late on Friday night and Joss Stone is meant to be calling rather early the next morning, which means I am home, alone, preparing. The oracle of the internet has already dispensed with one surprise – although her music has been bouncing around the ionosphere for what feels like decades, Stone is just 24 years old. Her voice seemed to arrive on this earth finely aged and fully formed, the sonic equivalent of Benjamin Button but without the wrinkles. Perhaps Stone’s management was unaware how best to harness this precocity – it is noteworthy that the artwork on her 2003 debut album, The Soul Sessions, gives prominence to a vintage microphone that had surely seen more years than the then-16-year-old Stone. In less than a decade, Stone has sold 11 million copies of her five records. She’s won BRIT awards and a Grammy, she’s dabbled in acting, and she’s emerged victorious after an almighty tussle with her record label over content and direction. But how much of Stone has entered the collective consciousness? I decide to find out by soliciting questions online. This reveals two things: first, that there are plenty of people at home alone on Friday night, and second, most of them are surprisingly knowledgeable about Joss Stone. The first question is from Eleri, a Canberra resident, who wants to know why Stone changed her name – what was wrong with being Joscelyn Stoker? “Tell them to write a letter or an email to the manager I used to have and ask them!” Stone exclaims in response. “But they did make a good point, that if I was to use my own name, not only me but my family would have bother from fans. But I’m not a very good liar; the second I was asked my real name I said Joscelyn Stoker, and then of course my Nan gets f***ing phone calls every five minutes.” This question of identity is one that has roiled around Stone for all of her career. Her first album was a collection of soul covers that didn’t bare much of her soul; her third was called Introducing Joss Stone, and her new one is LP1. There are restarts aplenty – and so, with the bombast of a brand-new Brunswick yoga teacher, who is Joss Stone? “I have no idea!” she says, the answer wrapped inside

a low chuckle. “I’m just a girl that sings songs and enjoys doing so. There’s nothing too special about me – I just make noises that people happen to like. I’m very lucky.” Stone says if she were able to give any advice to her teenaged self, it would be to “warn myself about certain characters”. She doesn’t have any regrets – “well, not too many” – and is thick-skinned about unkind reviews. “You know what, I don’t read too many. I don’t know whether it’s just that I don’t care – and I know that sounds awful and I should care – but I don’t, really. “After the making of the music, once I know that I like it and had a wonderful experience making it, I don’t really care what happens after that. I know that sounds really silly and terrible, but that’s the truth.”

This armour of indifference extends to her attitude towards music piracy and file sharing, which leads to our next question, from Adrian in Ormond: “I’d like to pick her brain more on that. It’s quite a departure from the normal line toed by artistes, it’s refreshing, and that makes her even more beautiful.” Stone makes a small, cute noise of bashful appreciation, then launches into an explanation. “The reason why I think free downloads are positive is because there are lots of people in this world who can’t afford to spend 10 or 15 quid every time they want to buy an album. Music is for sharing. That’s the beauty of it,” she says. “I believe it will make music better. Nowadays, people will only buy music if they love it. You can’t make a piece of shit and expect people to go back and pay for it when they already have it for free.” New artists, however, are exempt; Stone thinks it’s

important to support those taking their first tentative steps towards a recording career. She highlights the importance of touring, and says as long as people go to her shows she can keep making music. And then she stops to announce: “But you know what? If someone can’t afford my music, go ahead, get on the internet and download it for free. Please.” Stone’s been busy lately. There was the quite bizarre incident earlier this year when two men, carrying swords and a body bag, were arrested on suspicion of trying to rob her country home. There’s the new album, the acting, and also recruitment by none other than Mick Jagger for a supergroup called SuperHeavy. “Mick just called and was like ‘Hey, you wanna come? It’ll be fun’,” Stone says. “I said yes very quickly.” She rhapsodises about her other bandmates: Damian Marley has “amazing melodies” and Eurythmics stalwart Dave Stewart has “a similar outlook on life; we’re both very chilled out”. Having learnt about the dynamics of being in a band, Stone has transmuted this education into managing one: ska act Yes Sir Boss is the latest addition to her new label, Stone’d. She might also be looking to manage a household, according to the Guardian, which has a backgrounder on Stone that says she wants to give up singing soon to become a “normal housewife”. This is inaccurate. “Well, I think people are putting words into my mouth,” Stone says. “What I said was I want to have children. I don’t know how that turned into a housewife with a husband. I don’t really want to get married, I don’t feel the need to do so, but I definitely want kids.” Which is a nice point to bring in a rather silly batch of questions, from Luanne in Wantirna, who wants to know if Stone would smack any future kids? “Yes!” is the decisive answer. Does she think pugs are cute or ugly? “I think they’re very cute.” And, finally, can they be Facebook friends? “No, I don’t really use it, I only go on it when I’m doing Joss Stone stuff, not Joscelyn Stoker stuff. I did have a Facebook that was mine, and I actually don’t know how to get into it now. I used it for like a week and then it annoyed me.” Are these the silliest questions she’s been asked in an interview? “Yes,” she says. “I’ve got to go now, honey, I’ve got another interview.” And then she’s gone. \

food\ MARIA HARRIS REVIEWS PLAKA GREEK RESTAURANT is on the wall. Proof, if the evidence anyone needs it, that this place loves a crowd.

(Darrian Traynor)

The mixed platter

The pictures above the entrance of Plaka tell the story of this Greek restaurant’s appeal – photographs of large groups of people, all smiling and buoyant, families seated around tables of 10 or more, enjoying the communion of dining together at Plaka. That seems to be the essence of Plaka, which sits on the busiest corner in the village of East Ivanhoe. It’s the ideal place for a get-together, for functions, celebrations, work dinners and for families to get out and enjoy the casual Greek dining experience. Plaka caters equally for tables of two and four, but it’s the big tables that capture the spirit, the scrumptious platters of meat and seafood and the boisterous atmosphere that is so much fun. The original Plaka is the historic neighbourhood of Athens, clustered on the northern and eastern slopes of the Acropolis. It’s a beautiful café district, lots of fairy lights sparkling on those hot Athenian nights. This Plaka is north and east of the city, facing Lower Heidelberg Road in East Ivanhoe, within a hundred metres of the village shopping centre and two primary schools. Plaka opened six years ago, taking over a block that had been a car yard and garage. It makes good use of an ideal location – an eatery so close to the village’s other foodie features, including no less than three coffee shops, a tapas bar, bakery, much-loved fruit and veg, fish-and-chip shop and established restaurant Condotti.

Plaka is vintage Greek – white-painted rendered walls, bright-blue menu boards, flower pots and a cheery outlook. The huge windows look out onto Lower Heidelberg Road, giving the diner a nice feeling of being part of the village. With the warm weather coming up, there are also outdoor tables. This is a family operation. Paul Mylonopoulos, a third-generation restaurateur and chef, and his son Terry are the co-owners. Paul is also the head chef. He started cooking as a young man in Greece, and has spent 30 years in Melbourne restaurants, including his own restaurant in Fitzroy for 18 years. Terry and Paul have a lovely poster above the entrance, sharing the wall with the photos of large groups dining here. The poster is drawn by a little boy named George, and Terry is justifiably proud of both George and his restaurant. “George is about eight. He is the son of one of our customers and he’s a celiac. When George comes in with his family, we hand-cut the potatoes for him and cook them in separate oil,” says Terry. “With the Greek background, children call the older adults uncle and aunty, so we are like uncles to him. “I am really proud of what we do. We’re not trying to

make a million bucks. I love the customers and serving good, wholesome food.” We started with four home-made dips served with the freshly baked bread. The taramosalata and tzatziki were familiar – and delicious. But the other two dips melitzanosalata – a puree of baked eggplant, breadcrumbs and garlic – and htipiti – mashed feta, ricotta and red capsicum with a hint of chilli – were equally delicious. We also chose a feta and olives entree – a generous block of feta drizzled in extra virgin olive

oil and oregano with a bowl of kalamata olives. The sagnakai proved a great hit with everyone in our group. We loved the sensation of biting through the slightly crusty coating and into the squelchy cheese. This is the first time in a restaurant where a waiter has talked us into ordering less food, not more. We wanted to order a mixed platter for four, but he was having none of that. “A platter for three will be enough,” he counselled. The Plaka mixed platter arrived laden with lamb gyros, chicken souvlakia, lamb fillet souvlakia, fish fillets, king prawns, octopus and fried calamari. Served with a plate of potatoes, a traditional Greek salad and eaten with an accompanying crisp white wine, we could almost imagine we were in Athens, not East Ivanhoe. And yes, the waiter was right. \

Nazaaray Reserve Pinot Noir 2009

Stonier Windmill Pinot Noir 2008

Grown at 200 metres above sea level at Main Ridge, the vines are on an east-facing slope that catches the morning sun, hence the name. Because of this location, it’s one of the last vineyards to ripen on the peninsula. Flavours of cherry, plum, spice, perfume, rhubarb and a bit of undergrowth are delicious. It’s a silky, satin-smooth wine with very fine tannins that have a faint grip. Bright acid has a slightly sour note that works well on the finish, along with cherry and spice notes.

Port Phillip Estate and its sibling, Kooyong, have been on fire lately, and this stylish wine continues the trend. Perfumed aromas of red and black cherries, plum, spice and rhubarb are given added complexity from sappy, smoky notes. There’s a vibrant core of cherry, strawberry and raspberry flavour that is as interesting as it is delicious and well balanced by tannins that offer good grip and bright acid. The wine finishes long with cherry and a sweet wave of strawberry flavour.

This wine is due for release in the next few weeks, and at this stage it’s just a pup. Upon opening, it’s quite stalky and spicy, but time in the decanter reveals aromas of plum, cherry, raspberries and dusty cedar oak as the stalky whole-bunch notes recede to become intriguing perfume notes. It drank better after being open for a day. Sweet strawberry and sour blood-plum flavours lead to powder-fine tannins and bright acidity. All the components are here for a very good and, more importantly, interesting wine. It just needs time.

Stonier’s annual international pinot noir tasting SIPNOT is on again in November, so if you’re a pinot lover, check out www.stoniers.com.au for details. The wine is from a vineyard overlooking Merricks, and aromas of raspberry, morello cherry and earth are complemented by stalky, sappy notes from a high proportion of whole-bunch fermentation. Raspberry, rhubarb and strawberry flavours are supported by a lovely structure with grippy tannins and balanced acid that lead to deep and long cherry and earthy flavours on the finish.

Beauty ScriBe\

DHaV NaiDu KNOWS WHere tO DraW tHe LiNe is everywhere. When you take beauTy it for granted, it can sometimes surprise you. The other day, from seemingly out

of nowhere, I was reminded of how powerful well-applied eyeliner can be. I was channel surfing on Sunday morning and stumbled across POPAsia on SBS. I was blown away by the video clips and songs. I may not understand Korean but I could definitely immerse myself in the music. The routines were well choreographed and the music was heart-pounding. Everything was clinically rehearsed and every pop starlet was saccharinely perfect. KPop (Korean pop), as it is popularly known, reminded me of the new-wave movement of the 1980s – pin-up good looks, perfectly coiffed hair, bizarrely matching outfits and make-up. Every male and female in the videos was wearing make-up unashamedly. In this flurry of colour and glitz, I noticed that beyond make-up, the starlets had an obsession with eyeliners. Artfully drawn and manicured to perfect wingtips, the eyeliners were in a collection of colours. The liners made the singers even more interesting as their eyes seem to actually pop out of the TV. It got me thinking. Now I understand why Mary Quant and Twiggy in the 1960s wore so much kohl around their eyes. Liners have power, and again today they have become all the rage. But what is it about liners? Bob Dylan wrote “there’s beauty in the silver singing river, there’s beauty in the sunrise in the sky, but none of these and nothing else can match the beauty that I remember in my true love’s eyes”. So accentuate those eyes, but instead of the customary black or brown liners, indulge in this season’s most alluring jewel-toned liners and let your eyes reflect your beauty with a powerful sparkle. \

Things to remember Pencils should not drag skin, they should glide; Keep make-up neutral and let the colourful liner play hero; l To line eyes, start at the tear duct and follow the curve of the lash line; l The simplest way to wear liner is to draw three dots along your lash line and connect the dots – this way you are not drawing one continuous line and mucking it up; l For a smokey line, gently rub liner just along the lash line; and l Always set liner with a tiny bit of translucent powder. l l

The fine art of tRAvELLiNg Luggage need never be boring again, writes JANE ROCCA.

w

hen it comes to choosing a suitcase, or any kind of travel bag, for that matter, most people think black will do the trick. You only need to look at the abundance of drab colours that appear on conveyor belts at airports for collection to see how confused flyers become trying to locate their luggage among the clones. Australian designer Catherine Manuell knows only too well the importance of colour when it comes to travel bags and has been pushing her love of the colour wheel for more than a decade. Her world exists on the opposite end of blacks and browns, and she has breathed new life into an otherwise ultra-conservative world of suitcases. In a nutshell, she has put the romance back into luggage. “When I began designing luggage about 12 years ago, all luggage at that stage was black, navy, brown, and if very lucky you could find a nylon piece in dark red,” says Manuell. “I wanted something colourful and far more interesting and so the range was created.” Manuell originally began as a milliner (working from a studio in Flinders Lane) and designed hats for clients including Review, Witchery, Myer and David Jones. She originally learnt the craft from her grandmother. Manuell had previous life plans of becoming a primary school teacher before her foray in fashion. In the mid-’90s she became senior designer with Metalicus, designing scarves and bags. But it was in 1998 that she decided to launch her own company (Catherine Manuell Design) and start making bags. Her range now includes a vibrant mix of cosmetic cases, laptop bags, suitcases on wheels, and hard-shell cases to match them. Manuell opened her business on Westgarth Street, Northcote, long before the strip became revivalist cool, and now runs the show from a warehouse on Grange Road in Alphington (nestled a stone’s throw from bustling Station Street in Fairfield). The mother of two, who has opened a few shops since her humble beginnings, says her range is inspired by life’s everyday. She creates two ranges a year and then develops companion pieces for the existing collections. “It always helps to head out to cafés, galleries and bars and to travel; to get a feel for what is happening,” says Manuell.

It’s all about being inspired by nature

Fruits of her labour: Catherine Manuell Design Junior Travel Set (left). Suitcase ($77.50) and Trolley Base ($99). Colourful: PebbleTote WDenim (below, $110).

For summer 2011-12, Manuell has focused on fruits and other bright colours – think cherries and tomatoes captured at their blossoming best and lots of bright tones to help you make a cheerier statement next time you head to the airport. For Manuell it’s all about being inspired by nature: florals, fruit, leaves and birds. With the summer collection comes a new lightweight luggage range making it easier to lug your gear, too. While designing is her main love, she also finds inspiration through collaboration. A few years ago Manuell teamed with a group of Aboriginal elders from Arnhem Land to adapt their paintings to luggage. The delicate process of repurposing this art while maintaining its message was of utmost importance, for here was work steeped in history and song lines. The Aboriginal female artists whose work appears on Manuell’s bags are from other remote areas of Australia including Katherine, Utopia and Indulkana – all of which receive a percentage of the money made from the sale of these items. “I first began the project after receiving the art from Maureen (Marrangulu) Thompson on a postcard,” says Manuell of the Arnhem Land collaboration. “I loved her painting and stuck it on my pin board for many months. After never tiring of it, I wondered if perhaps Maureen and I could work together. I approached her and while waiting to hear back, I realised that I would need more than one painting to work with, so I sought other paintings and artists that I loved, art that I thought could translate well printed onto luggage.” Other artists who collaborate with Manuell are Evelyn Pultara, Amy Johnson and Dianne Robinson. There is also a contemporary gift card range that comes together with women artists from Iwantja Arts. While some of Mannuell’s luggage provides an indigenous history lesson (Thompson’s work incorporates her land, including the Roper River), others are there purely for fun. We like that her range gives you the option to choose your destination. \

tranquillity base Let there be light … and there was … along with an almost catalogue-like list of features designed to make this family living at its best, writes HARI RAJ.

o

ne of the best things about Eltham is that from certain angles you seem to be adrift in an ocean of green. Some houses make it easier than others, and the residences on Diosma Road do it better than most. It’s one of those pockets with just the one way in – no through roads here – and No.26 sprawls happily at the end of a court, even if it isn’t marked as such. The house rises quite majestically as you come up the windy path, with a cream-coloured structure the most prominent – it later turns out to be the pool house. Which probably shouldn’t be mentioned at this stage if we’re discussing the inside of the house first, but then this is one of those houses that have been architect-designed to make the most of its surrounds. This translates to a bountiful supply of floor-to-ceiling windows, which allow for light year-round and warmth when the sun is kind. The dining, kitchen and family/ meals areas all have views of the pool and spa areas, and more besides – you can see right through to the end of the block, an expanse of grass under trees that embrace the sky. The vendors enthuse about the tranquillity, and the high ceilings and spacious interiors do an equally eloquent job. On top of this, the house is arrayed around a central

courtyard, an open-to-air space that acts as a light well for the rest of the house. The family/meals room and one bedroom are the main beneficiaries; two other bedrooms don’t get as much light but share a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite. The main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe and an en suite, of course, but its most exciting feature is a sunken level, down a small flight of stairs. This makes the room even more spacious, makes the most of more floor-to-ceiling windows and allows parents to enjoy the sunshine and keep an eye on kids in the pool without ever being in danger of being splashed. Oh, and that pool house must be amazing in summer, when you can open all its doors and bask in the breeze. There’s a spa and a deck and heated floors for winter – but it’s time for the most important part of this article. As regular readers will know, The Weekly Review is fond of its animals, and I am pleased to report that in addition to the vendor’s description of the house as a “paradise for birds”, regular visitors also include echidnas. Ah, but there is one last thing. Out in the block, close enough to the house for parent’s nerves but far enough away for children’s escapades, is a magnificent cubby house. It has two storeys, with a spiral staircase leading to an upper floor replete with a balcony to survey the grounds. \

For 12 years the owners have enjoyed the comfort and convenience offered by this four-bedroom residence. The large windows, security shutters and colours used dictate a traditional colonial house. The beautifully landscaped front garden is a wonderful welcome to No.26 Byron Avenue. As part of a five-year plan, the existing shell was kept but the interior was gutted because the owners wanted to redesign the rooms. A fresh coat of white paint was the starting point in transforming the dominant mission-brown interior. Peach carpet was removed and replaced with polished concrete floors and the modern bathrooms were completed just last year. Every light fitting in the house was changed. The sunken lounge at the front has floating timber floors and a double-sided Jetmaster gas fireplace that was

If you were looking for a block to build your own dream home, this might tick all the boxes without the hassle. There is plenty of room for your own customisation to bring character to a great space with all the conveniences built in. The main living area is huge and incorporates an open-plan lounge/dining/kitchen area. There are three bedrooms on this level, one of which is a teenagers’ retreat incorporating an adjoining study. The upper level is a fourth bedroom with en suite and separate toilet and a spacious walk-in wardrobe. Getting closer to the treetops, there is a great aspect from this level and one gets a feel for the natural environment that surrounds it. The undercover outdoor deck area at the back of the house is perfect for entertaining. \ Emma HougHton
