Review\ MOUTHiNG OFF

THe PeRiLS OF DiReCT ACTiON

Mahatma Gandhi had it right, I think. I’ve always been drawn to the concept of non-violent resistance as the best way of achieving important social change. Civil disobedience, economic or political non-co-operation, peaceful resistance ‌ if any teenagers are reading this right now, these are all concepts you are by far better embracing in your ongoing parental battles rather than all-out war. The oldies may have more power and more money than you, but start to opt out and see how that shakes things up! I’ve been reminded more than once recently of this highly-idealistic approach to the overthrow of tyranny or the confrontation of abusive behaviour. I look at the vicious violence of some of the protesters at the G20 meeting in Vancouver this month and I just don’t

understand what I see. What does that shop window now being smashed by a fool in a balaclava have to do with food and water security in developing nations? Gandhi would not be surprised that violence begets violence, and that Canadian police then attacked some protesters with equal ferocity. The mob leading the protests – the Anti-Capitalist Convergence – huffed that the Police response was “nothing short of the abandonment of the rule of law‌â€?. Tell it to the hood setting the police car alight. I remember the G20 protests in Melbourne back in 2006 and witnessing some of the most idiotic destruction I’ve ever seen. Among a crowd heaving with anger but little discernible focus – more smashed windows, horses struck – a young man sat astride the important and imposing sculpture by Clement Meadmore in the forecourt of AMP Square on William Street. He had daubed its burry, rusted-steel surface with slogans and I asked him what Meadmore’s abstract art had to do with the G20 negotiations that so angered him. He didn’t have an answer for that, but he eventually volunteered that he was “improvingâ€? the work with his individual mark. I think I may have called him a dickhead and moved on. You have to pick your battles carefully if you’re going to engage in the high-risk task of taking on the oppressors or challenging governments and public opinion. And even Gandhi acknowledged that you can’t always do that peaceably: the Taliban won’t decide to leave the Afghans, and others, alone without some force.

Which is why a rather heated conversation on air last week with the Australian director of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – the group that takes on Japanese whalers in the Southern Ocean – led me quickly back to my misgivings about direct confrontation. The group had distanced itself from its beleaguered captain Peter Bethune, after he was charged by the Japanese with assault when he forced his way onto their boat and threw a kind of stink bomb. He’s a punchy guy, unapologetically on a confrontational mission, and the society had criticised and then cut him loose because he had boarded the whaler while carrying weapons. But it turns out this was all just a ploy: the organisation wasn’t expelling Bethune, wasn’t in any way critical of his methods and was happy to have him back in campaigns any time after the Japanese gave him a suspended sentence. So how could we now believe anything Sea Shepherd now had to say after such a brazen campaign of disinformation? And just as importantly, if you’re opposing the killing of some of nature’s most splendid and endangered creatures, shouldn’t your actions be above reproach, and surely above those of your declared enemy? Perhaps not. As Nelson Mandela noted, power is never just given up, it must be wrested away. But that can make picking the bad guy very difficult. \

REVIEW\ COVER STORY From ballet to bodybuilding, Sara Picken-Brown has been an international success time and time again. But, as she tells HARI RAJ, the journey between the two was a long, hard road.

A

ll Sara Picken-Brown ever wanted to be was a ballerina. This is the moment, dear reader, when your eyes wander to the photograph that accompanies this story, and you check back to see if that first line is correct – but rest assured, you read it true. Ever since she can remember, Sara’s dreams were of dancing. Her parents were dancers, so she spent her childhood in theatres and dance studios, waiting for them to finish rehearsals and seeing them soar on stage. Little wonder a love of ballet and performing took root. “When they had shows on I’d be in the dressing rooms with them, watching them get ready, and it was like you were growing up in a fantasy, really. It was all feathers and sequins and greasepaint,” she says. “I guess it was a natural thing that I wanted to do what they did. But it took until I was eight for my mother to say OK. She didn’t want me to dance.” While Sara’s mother knew the rigours of a life of dance all too well, she was nothing but supportive once she saw that her daughter had her heart set on a similar career path. Sara left school at 17 to learn dance at the Queensland University of Technology. She spent the next half-decade studying intensely and travelling the world – she danced professionally with the Queensland Opera and performed classical and contemporary works in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Britain. “I loved everything about it. I loved performing. I loved the discipline, and the process of getting in every day, that routine, that regimen. And then on top of that, the cherry on the cake was that you got to showcase it all. That’s where the fun was for me,” Sara says. “Every day you’d walk in and be able to do something different, or walk in and not be able to do something that you’d mastered the day before. That was terribly frustrating, but that was part of the challenge, overcoming that battle with your body.” Sara’s natural interest in the way things worked, combined with her development as a dancer, led to her devouring books and information on the human body. She learnt anatomy and physiology, methods of recovering, techniques and scientific studies. So when the pain started, Sara knew exactly what was wrong. “I had quite a lot of problems with my shins, which I managed, but they just got worse … stress fractures that basically developed because of the workload I was doing but would also have happened because of the way I’m built, my genetic shape,” she says. “I’m known in the bodybuilding industry as having fantastic calves, but in terms of continuing dancing they were a problem – overdevelopment, and too much muscle mass for my bone structure.” Her shins first started playing up when she was in high school. Sara learnt to manage it, but by the time she turned professional and took on a correspondingly larger amount of work, she knew that the pain would force her to make an extremely difficult choice. For a lifelong dream to be ripped away as the result of an accident, something sudden and unexpected, is cruel.

PRESSED FOR SUCCESS

Ab-fab: bodybuilder Sara Picken-Brown training at Doherty’s Gym in the Banana Alley Vaults in Melbourne. (SHANNON MORRIS)

B

ut when an ex-boyfriend dragged her to a gym in Covent Garden in London, Sara was hooked. The same thirst for knowledge about the inner workings of the body that she cultivated while dancing spurred her to learn more about building her body, even it was diametrically opposed to her previous training. “A ballerina’s mindset is to be small and light and agile, and for me, being my size, that was really important. And then in the gym everyone’s trying to get bigger, and cardio was big. Ballerinas aren’t fit in the cardiovascular sense, we’re anaerobically fit,” she says. “It was totally different. And I found that challenging. I guess that’s why I wanted to pursue it more. It was such a massive challenge that I got a bit addicted to it.” Sara moved back to Australia for love, and took up a personal training course while she was on holiday. The romance didn’t last, but the love affair with bodybuilding did; today, she is Australia’s highest-ranked figure athlete, with victories in the International Federation of BodyBuilders’ Australasian and Elite titles. Affiliated with the same federation that Arnold Schwarzenegger represented, Sara’s Australasian win saw her invited to the Schwarzenegger Fitness Classic in Columbus, Ohio. She gets excited while recounting her experiences there, and little wonder, as she placed sixth out of 55 competitors – that’s sixth in the world. She admits to being more than a little starstruck during the event. As she recounts, one of the highlights was getting her make-up done next to fitness icon Monica Brant, while Jay Cutler, Mr Olympia himself, sat on a nearby bed waiting to get his hair done. “We were all just chatting. There were a couple of times when I had to pinch myself. It was just surreal.” Sara even stayed at the same hotel as “Arnie”, which crawled with none-too-subtle government agents for the duration of the event. And did she get to meet the man? “I stood about a metre away from Arnie and Sly Stallone. I got to see them up pretty close. And you know what, Arnold MCed the pro show and, listening to him speak, I have not a clue what he said. If you ask me what the whole speech was about, I have no idea,” she

recalls, laughing. “I do remember, though, his passion and his charisma. You can see why he is who he is and why he has achieved what he has. He was so inspiring, but what about? I have no idea.” Sara has kept up her winning streak since returning to these shores. A repeat Australasian title in 2010 means that she is the first figure competitor to ever have been invited to the Arnolds and the world championships in the same year, the latter to take place in Mexico in October. So how does the figure category compare with traditional bodybuilding? Sara explains that while there are some similarities, there are also fundamental differences, predominantly in terms of proportions. “Instead of being quite blocky-looking and square and angular, the women’s proportions are much curvier. There’s a feminine aspect to it, and that is very difficult to maintain when you’re getting to the higher levels of the sport and the development of the physique,” she says. “It’s not a dieting competition, and I think sometimes that gets confused for even trainers who are getting girls ready. It’s still a muscular-development sport, where you are training the muscles to be in proportion. “If someone were to ask me how to describe a figure athlete, I would say she’s a woman who is very feminine, who looks like she trains really hard, who looks like an athlete rather than a bodybuilder.” Some bodybuilders knuckle down only three months before a show, but Sara doesn’t work that way – it’s very much a lifestyle for her. “There’s the challenge, very intricate and very

disciplined. You get to get on stage and show what you’ve done. Everything that I was missing from dance, I found it in bodybuilding.” That appreciation of scrutiny, that ease and comfort in the public eye, certainly helped Sara with her new career. She attributes her success to her discipline in working on her body as well as her finely honed presentation skills. “When you get judged on stage, you’re not only judged on your physique. You need to present it properly in terms of the posing that you do, the colour of the bikini you choose for your skin type and hair colour, how you do your hair and make-up,” she says. “Figure women are supposed to be the epitome of all that is beautiful and feminine, and the more attractive you are, and the more attractively presented, it’s going to sell. You’re trying to sell yourself to the judges, you’re marketing yourself as the winner, the champion, and I’ve spent a long time coming up with the right mix.” In the bodybuilding mix, however, is a history of association with drug use. So has Sara ever had accusations levelled against her? “Plenty. I used to get drug-tested regularly. Tall poppy syndrome is rife. But if I were in horse racing or sprinting, those accusations would be there. There is always going to be that negative element, whether it’s true or not,” she says. “It is disheartening sometimes, because I’ve been training consistently for 10 years, and I was a dancer before that, so I’ve been working on my physique (and managing my diet) since I was eight years old. So to have those unfair accusations put to me belittles and degrades the hard work.”

W

(Charlie Suriano / Chaz PhotograPhy)

Far harsher, however, is the knowledge that the decision is up to you – that you have to amputate those dreams and cast them aside. And that’s exactly what Sara did. “It was my decision. It was a one-way ticket to having to have a reconstruction or something. (I was) crawling out of bed in the morning to get my breakfast and massaging my legs to be able to walk. There were a couple of mornings when that happened and I thought ‘This is insane. I’m 21 and I’m crippled’,” Sara says. “So as much as I loved dance and it had been my dream and my passion all my life, at that moment I realised that I couldn’t keep doing this and my health had to come first.” Sara is a big personality, so much so that when she reveals she is just 152.4 centimetres tall, it comes as quite a surprise. But as she speaks of this stage of her life, her natural effervescence is muted for the first time. “It was a very tough decision, and I spent probably two years in real turmoil. I had a bout of depression – not diagnosed or anything, but I was very down, a bit lost,” she says. “Imagine – from the age of eight until the age of 21 you had known exactly what you wanted, you were quite clear on exactly what you were doing and that’s what you were going to do, so to have it taken away was really tough.” So how did bodybuilding come into her life? “It didn’t, but the gym did,” is Sara’s answer. “It was more rehabilitation for my head than anything else. I stopped dancing and suddenly I was getting fat. I’d never been fat in my life. And I didn’t want to get out of bed. There was no reason for me to get out of bed.”

orse than that, Sara is only too aware that these negative connotations may hold back people from getting involved in the sport. She looks to balance the equation by doing a lot of education work, in terms of seminars in training, nutrition, personal development and contest preparation. Besides working as a personal trainer at Doherty’s Gym in the Banana Alley Vaults, Sara writes, hosts and manages fund-raisers, and does some work with the Government. The question needs to be asked – where does she find the time? “Well, I don’t watch a lot of television, I’ll tell you that much. When people tell me they don’t have time to do things, my answer to that is it’s not a priority. When you make something a priority, when you have a passion for it and you enjoy it, you can find time for anything.” When asked about her time away from work, Sara’s swift response is that there isn’t a lot of it, but that’s mainly because of the enormous satisfaction and fulfilment that she derives from her career. She does, however, lament not being able to travel as much as she would like. Her nomadic early years meant the travel bug bit deep, but now she explores the Australian and Victorian countryside whenever the opportunity presents itself. Sara is not seeing anyone at the moment – “I have two dogs, they’re my children, they’re very demanding” – and after spending most of her early life travelling the world, the 32-year-old of English and Kiwi stock has made Melbourne her home. Her experience hasn’t just tempered her ambition, it has made it more flexible. Her focus on health is one she tries to impart to her clients, as well as the ability to make changes without regrets. “I still stand by that – your health always has to come first. I have that philosophy with my training and my clients – yes, it’s great to go after your goals and have the body that you want, but if it’s not working for you, we need to assess how that can change. And that’s what I did.” \

This season, long dresses are making a comeback. They are no longer worn exclusively for the red carpet or a movie premiere. In Europe and America, long dresses are appearing everywhere. The dresses are colour-embossed, patterned, flowing and shapely. Hair is always worn down and shaggy, suggesting that casual, beachy look. This week we are going to investigate the women who have brought back the long dress from the iconic ᾽60s era into the cutting edge of fashion today. We will look at their choice in fabric and style, their hair and accessories. Let's pay homage to the Greek goddesses of ancient Athens. \

Review\ FOOD is a rare PePPeRcORn Thai suburban gem: a restaurant that lifts the bar for shopping-strip

dining by offering memorable food served by friendly, attentive staff in attractive surroundings. It’s accessible, it’s affordable, and most importantly, it’s local. The restaurant on busy Grimshaw Street is the brainchild of Thai chef Udomluk “Addy” Tangsajja and her husband, Peter Horton. Addy has also been owner and executive chef at Royal Orchid Thai Café in Bay Street, Port Melbourne, for 18 years. Five years ago the couple decided that Greensborough was ready for their style of Bangkok cooking. And judging by the packed house (it seats 42) on a freezing, mid-winter week night, their faith in the locals was justified. It appears popular with the 20-30 somethings as well as families with young children. “We chose Greensborough because there were no other Thai restaurants around there at the time,” says Peter. “Our aim was to provide a nice environment with good food where people want to come back. “We were also aware that our version of mild and hot is not necessarily what other people want.” The food is cooked to order. The chilli symbol on the menu indicates the strength of heat and spice. One chilli is mild. For the full-blown, eye-watering effect you can go up to three – or more, as some customers do. The restaurant is not fancy to look at but there are lots of reminders of Thailand, including a Thai silk curtain at the front and a glass cabinet containing hand-made Thai plates and ornaments. The menu is lengthy and offers many Thai staples,

such as curry puffs and fish cakes and several varieties of tom yum, the hot and sour soup. There are 20 seafood dishes – ranging from green curry prawns to a stir-fried fish with chilli and prawns with yellow Thai curry – as well as beef and chicken dishes. Vegetarians are also well catered for. The chef’s specials include a crispy-skinned salmon served with chilli-mango sauce and steamed bok choy, and something called Crying Tiger, made from marinated beef – cooked medium – and served with chilli and tamarind sauce. Accompaniments include steamed jasmine rice, coconut rice and chilli-fried rice. Peanuts and palm sugar are used liberally and are integral parts of sauces made by Addy. The food is served in a variety of pretty blue-and-white patterned Thai dishes that will be familiar to people who have eaten in Bangkok restaurants. The curry puffs – chicken or beef served with plum sauce – were made with flaky pastry and the fish cakes were moist and spongy with several flavours including chilli and sugar and were served with a sweet chilli sauce with peanuts and cucumber.

The seafood soup – tom yum talay, recommended by the waiter – was served with a prawn, a scallop, a piece of calamari and of rockling in a flavoursome broth with a mushroom and a piece of tomato. The barbecued pork had a nice amount of fat on the edge and was served with lettuce and a chilli-tamarind sauce on a banana leaf. Famous chef David Thompson says in his newly revised international cookbook Thai Food that the massamun curry is one of the most complex of Thai dishes. There is no telling what he would have to say about the Peppercorn Thai’s version. The tender sliced chicken breast, vegetables and peanuts in a fragrant, pale massamun curry sauce was a highlight. Desserts include a seasonal fruit platter, banana fritters, coconut ice-cream and the real comfort food of a sticky rice-banana dumpling served with vanilla ice-cream. Just thinking about it brings back strong memories and a twinge of envy towards the locals who have this restaurant at their doorstep. \

Peppercorn Thai is in the heart of the Grimshaw Street strip shopping centre. It serves a large range of freshly cooked food with the emphasis on fresh ingredients and homemade accompaniments. Vegetarians, meat lovers and fans of seafood are well catered for in a menu that does justice to the hot and sour, sweet and spicy components of traditional Thai food. The service is friendly and efficient. It is fully licensed with BYO wine only. There is a small wine list, which has wine by the glass as well as beer and spirits. A $5 corkage charge applies if you bring your own wine. Highlights were the Thai fish cakes and the mussamun chicken curry.

it doing to me? The winophiles say drink up: look how much more healthy the French and Italians are. The wowsers say watch out, alcohol is dangerous, have a cup of tea instead. Before we join the fray, what does the science say? The National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) should be about as squeaky-clean and unbiased an organisation as you can get to help us decide if drinking wine – or any other beverage containing alcohol – is good or bad thing for us. Every few years another extensively researched and referenced tome is produced for just this purpose. (2009) Australian Guidelines To Reduce Health Risks From Drinking Alcohol is the most recent and weighty edition. The problem with alcohol is that so many people don’t know when to stop. By the time you have had a couple of drinks, you feel great: relaxed, less worried about how others might perceive you and more likely to be frank and fearless and speak your mind. Then time for another one; then perhaps another. Now your ability to judge good from bad is affected. Perhaps it’s time for risky business. She looks nice, a slight stumble as you weave your way to say something inappropriate to the attractive girl with the guy you don’t like and … The next morning can be appalling! Hopefully in your own bed with a pounding headache, dry mouth, a ferocious thirst, light-sensitivity and nausea; or worse, in emergency with a scar for life, or a coma following a car accident, or spinal fracture after jumping off the top of a bus, or in the morgue. Too much alcohol makes most of us worry about our liver. Reduce Health Risks is about the things we don’t think about, too. Misadventure related to alcohol causes “13 per cent of all deaths among 14-17-year-old Australians” and 60 times as many “are hospitalised each week from alcohol-related causes”. In 65-74-year-olds “almost 600 die because of alcohol and 6500 are hospitalised”. Fights and foolishness aside, what else can go wrong? Premature heart disease, cancers (liver, mouth, throat and bowel), diabetes, serious vitamin deficiency, obesity, liver disease, damage to unborn babies in mums who have alcohol problems, and the huge spectrum of mental illness associated with drinking too much alcohol: depression, dementia, suicidal tendencies and the mountain of social disadvantage related to a family member addicted to alcohol. So why would anyone want to drink? I think that’s a good question when you consider Mongolians drink fermented horse-mare’s milk. Apparently it smells and tastes terrible, but gets the job done. Humans like to get high, to relax a little and get away from their worries. And it has been this way since someone left the grape juice too long in the amphora. Having a little bit of alcohol every day has been touted by the pro-alcohol lobby for many years as a good thing to do. The French paradox and Mediterranean diet have championed wine’s cause, as well as push on the enthusiasm for a couple of stubbies at dinner time here

in Melbourne. Low levels of alcohol have been shown to be of some help in preventing heart disease and stroke, but these benefits are modest at best and not even supported in some more recent studies. If you are feeling a little disillusioned, it gets worse. Alcohol, mild, moderation or far too much, directly causes 3.7 per cent of all deaths and 4.4 per cent of total “harmful health consequences to the community”. Crime is higher, family dysfunction is higher, risk-taking behavior is higher, violence is higher and police involvement is higher. So how much is reasonably safe? In the NHMRC guideline one, “no more than two standard drinks on any day reduces the lifetime risk of harm from alcohol-related disease or injury”. Guideline two suggests “single-occasion drinking” having “no more than four standard drinks … reduces the risk of injury”: and healthy women and men were not to be considered differently. What about the resveratrol? Blogs and pinophiles are full of it. Is it the Burgundian fountain of youth, or just more vino-marketing? There is some evidence that this flavonoid antioxidant, found in high concentrations in pinot noir and other red-wine grapes, might have some protective effect for heart disease and cholesterol management by boosting good cholesterol (mayoclinic.com.au/health/red-wine/HB000890), but researchers are still not sure if it’s due to resveratrol … or something quite different. What is for sure is that at low doses, all alcohol has a mildly protective effect, appearing at two drinks and disappearing again when you order your fourth pot of beer. Moderation, moderation, in all things moderation. Unfortunately, too much of a good thing always comes back to haunt you! “For both sexes, the lifetime risk of death from alcohol-related disease more than triples when consumption increases from two to three standard drinks per day.” And women who drink more than this increase their risk faster than men. My advice – if you like to drink alcohol, have some alcohol-free days every week; and to help stick to the guidelines, buy better, more expensive wine to sip and savour. If that’s not working, take up drinking fermented mare’s milk! Sobering statistics! \

TASTINGS\ DRINK THIS NICOLAS FEUILLATTE BRUT RESERVE PARTICULAIRE NV (Champagne) $60; 12% a/v ★★★★

Food match: Oysters

More bottles of this will be drunk on Bastille Day than any other Champagne – it is France’s top seller. And it’s not hard to see why. This is a mix of 40 per cent pinot noir, 40 per cent pinot meunier and 20 per cent chardonnay and is made from a blend of 200 base wines. It smells of strawberries and brioche with some dusty notes, while flavours include nectarine, hazelnuts and lemon. It’s dry, too, with a fine mousse that fills the mouth and excellent length. POMMERY BRUT ROYAL NV (Champagne) $70; 12.5% a/v ★★★★½

Food match: Caviar and blinis

This wine is making a comeback of sorts in the Australian market. It is made up of equal parts of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier and is packed with powerful aromas of lemon, rose petals and toasted brioche. It is dry, with a hint of residual sugar and has a luxurious mousse, which is creamy in the mouth, and balanced acid that is well supported by more delicate lemon and brioche flavours. There’s excellent, lingering length.

IF YOU

haven’t drunk a French wine for a while, this Wednesday, July 14, is as good a reason as any to dust off the corkscrew. It’s Bastille Day – France’s national day, which marks the storming of Paris’ Bastille and a key date in the creation of modern France. We don’t really need Bastille Day as an excuse to uncork some of France’s finest, with a raft of importers bringing in some excellent wines at a range of price points and with the Aussie dollar so strong against the euro at the moment. I developed a fond affection for Bastille Day at high school while studying French with a teacher who had two passions – the French Revolution and Edith Piaf. He spoke on these two subjects so often it’s a wonder we ever got any work done in class. One thing I did learn, thanks to constant repetition, is the phrase “un bon vin blanc” (a good white wine), because it uses all of the French nasal vowel sounds. That phrase may also be the genesis of my lifelong wine obsession. Champagne, previously a once-a-year treat in many households, is available throughout the year at crazy prices, and there is now a huge range available in Australia. Last spring, both major chains fought out a

SAINT COSME COTES DU RHONE 2008 (Rhone Valley) $19.99; 14% a/v ★★★★

Champagne price war on top-brand fizz – at one point I bought three bottles of the excellent Lanson Black Label NV for $100 – with the consumer coming out the only winner. I have a feeling it will be on again this year and I’ll be sure to let you know if it kicks off. Until that happens, I have found some well-priced Champagne to enjoy now, along with a few French wines from the more-affordable price spectrum, which have been imported directly by the major chains. If you have been eyeing off the cheap imports at Vintage Cellars or Dan Murphy’s, you’ll be pleased to know that some of these table wines stand out as being good value and decent examples of their regionality. In the past, I’ve found that when it comes to cheap imports, the reds often outshine the whites by some margin, but I was pleasantly surprised to find good examples of both. Watch out for more reviews of these imports in the coming weeks. So this Wednesday, light a fire, cook up a pot-au-feu and listen to the Little Sparrow while popping the cork from a bottle or two of bon vin français. And repeat after me: “un bon vin blanc, un bon vin blanc”. \

Vintage Cellars does a good range of imported French wines in the $15-$30 price bracket and it is great that wines such as this are widely available. This has all the hallmarks of Cotes Du Rhone with aromas of strawberries, cherries, spice and earth. It is light, smooth in the mouth with a good tannic grip. It has juicy flavours of stewed plums and cherries, with some pepper, tar and meaty characters. ARROGANT FROG SAUVIGNON BLANC 2009 (Southern France) $9.99; 12% ★★★

Food match: Chevre and herb tart

Thirty-six per cent of white wines sales in Australia are sauvignon blanc. If sav blanc is your thing and you can get past the name, you’ll find this a good alternative to Kiwi examples on the market. This smells and tastes of goosberry and green apple, with some tropical fruits and some herbaceous characters in the background. It is slightly viscose in the mouth – not too crisp and acidic – but with a good structure. If there is such a thing, this is a good sav blanc for winter. It’s available at Dan Murphy’s. 5★ OUTSTANDING 4★ REALLY GOOD 3★ GOOD 2★ OK 1★ NOT WORTH IT

M. CHAPOUTIER COTEAUX-DU-TRICASTIN 2008 (Rhone Valley) $12.99; 13% ★★★½ Food match: Pot-au-feu. This 50/50 blend of shiraz and grenache smells like cherries, raspberries with gamey notes and a hint of liquorice. It is light in colour, medium-bodied and has flavours of plums, cherries and some nice meaty characters. Drying tannins finish off the wine nicely. The Chapoutier range at Dan Murphy’s is always a good bet, and this is fine value. Monsieur Chapoutier also makes wines in Heathcote, which are worth seeking.

the

legend

lives on

Alexander McQueen took his own life wHeN nine days after losing his mother, Joyce, to cancer in February, the 40-year-old British designer

left the fashion world reeling in shock and asking why. The haute couture genius left behind a legacy of brilliant fashion and was adored for taking his collections to unconventional corners, appealing to everyone from singers Bjork and Madonna to actress Sarah Jessica Parker. New York-born and London-based fashion journalist and keen blogger Kristin Knox was one of many shaken by the tragedy so, rather than narrowing on details of his suicide, she compiled a fashion book to celebrate the man that was. “I decided to go the route of a tribute rather than focus on his biography,” says Knox, whose blog, theclotheswhisperer.co.uk, has been going since 2009. “I knew he had had a troubled life, like many gifted, creative people, but I wanted to focus on his legacy.” McQueen used fashion as an artform, and it was this creative expression that flowed through his collections. According to Knox, McQueen didn’t shy away from the tough issues, either – often raising awareness about gender, sexuality and even climate change through his clothes. Whether it was his Highland Rape collection in 1995 – in which McQueen stirred the notion of “rape victim” when he had models in ripped clothing on the runaway – or his quirky Armadillo shoes in 2009, which alluded to painful bondage footwear. McQueen pushed boundaries like few dared. “His controversial Highland Rape collection caused an outrage,” says Knox. “I think we just hadn’t experienced anything like him back then. McQueen was raw.” As for the terrifying lobster claw-shaped Armadillo shoes (which Lady Gaga proudly wore in her Bad Romance video clip), Knox says McQueen was not creating a shoe for everyday purposes. “I view his runway shows as a sort of installation art,” says Knox. “It’s meant to stir emotions and ideas in the viewers, not provide them with Friday date-night footwear. Genius of a Generation features photographs from McQueen’s catwalk collections and dialogue by Knox, who maps his artistic inventiveness. The book is a perfect photo essay memoir for any fan of McQueen. Knox’s favourite McQueen moment was his spring/ summer 2001 Birds collection. “It was the perfect balance of beauty and sorrow, darkness and light.” The designs featured women transformed into winged-like creatures. “It was so powerful visually and what it represented was both complex and emotionally engaging.” McQueen was named British designer of the year four times between 1996 and 2003, and his reputation was further solidified when he became head designer at Givenchy in 1996. He remained there for five years, blurring the line between refined and outrageous. He later moved into a partnership with the Gucci Group in 2000, a deal made possible by his mentor, the late Isabella Blow. McQueen’s Plato’s Atlantis spring/summer

2010 show in Paris would be the last he would attend before his death, and his fall/winter 2010 collection – just 80 per cent complete at the time of his death – was finished by his right-hand woman, Sarah Burton, who took over as creative director. Genius of a Generation is a tribute to a surreal, fantastical and imaginative legend. While the book is reason to celebrate, we’ve fallen in love with Australian

designer Lola&Bailey’s tribute to McQueen – gorgeous limited-edition McQueen totes. A must-have. \

tep down into the sporty BMW Z4 – for that’s what you do – and you can’t help but be impressed by the long, imposing bonnet. You’d swear there was a thumping straight eight lurking under there. There isn’t, but what is there is still quite potent. The sDrive Z4 23i actually has a silky-smooth 2.5-litre inline six, which might sound puny, but tramp the foot in second or third gear and it’s got a kick like a thoroughbred at Flemington and a sound to give you a thrill. Gone are the days of the ragtop. This new-generation Z4 has a two-piece retractable hardtop for the first time. It made its debut at the Melbourne International Motor Show in February last year. It also has a new name, the sDrive.

all around, plus larger doors for easier entry. Even so, a big bloke will find there’s still not a lot of room inside but lots of little storage cubicles. Because the car is so low, getting in and out can be hard on the back. If the plan is to go topless – and why wouldn’t you in a car such as this – you can practically forget about using the boot because that’s where the two-piece top is stored. Sure, you can still get your socks and jocks in there, but not a lot more when the top’s down. In fact the instructions warn you to make certain the boot is empty before dropping the top. It’s an exciting drive, that’s a given, and when you are inside, surrounded by all that brushed aluminium and Kansas black leather, the feeling is of sports-car luxury. It’s also got a multifunction sports leather steering wheel, Bluetooth for mobiles and heated seats. The cabin sits well back in the body, hence that long nose, which BMW claims provides a more dynamic driving experience. There are also eye-catching 17-inch star-spoke alloy wheels, parking distance sensors front and back, bi-xenon headlights and even a heated glass back window. SAFeTY The 23i has most of the features of its more powerful brothers, including cornering brake control, stability and traction control, front and side airbags for driver and passenger, side-impact protection, cruise control brake function and, most importantly for a convertible, a roll-over safety system behind the headrests.

iNTeRiOR dASH

Going topless in the sun has never been so easy. Gone are the release clips under the hood. All you do now is press a button in front of the six-speed shifter and suddenly the roof retracts and, in fewer than 30 seconds, tucks itself away in the boot. If the weather turns nasty, push another button and the roof returns, locked securely. The Z4 comes in three guises. The 23i 2.5-litre six-speed manual tested here is the entry model, priced at $86,200, plus dealer and on-road costs. It’s a while since I’ve driven the previous-generation Z4, a soft-top, but this latest car, says BMW, has more cabin space, a wider stance and a slightly larger bodyshell

AN OwNeR’S OPiNiON Hans Vos, a retired dairy farmer, of Maffra, in Gippsland, had a 1968 MGB for 15 years before he decided on “a bit of stupid extravagance” and bought a BMW Z4, the 3.0-litre 30i. He looked at the Porsche Cayman, the Mercedes SLK 350, which he test drove, and the Audi TT before deciding on the Beemer. “I liked the look of the car (the Z4).” He also wanted the 3.0-litre engine rather than the 2.5. “It (the 3.0-litre) makes it more interesting around (Gippsland’s) mountain roads,” he said. “Extravagant, maybe, but what the heck.” Vos described the Z4 as a lot of fun: “It’s not too harsh

(on the road). That’s what I was looking for, something that was comfortable and not too hard on the bones.” Despite its limited space, Vos said it had enough room for him, his wife and their luggage. “We have two substantial soft bags, which we use to go overseas, and they both fit in.” The big question is, has he learnt to use all the features that come with the Z4? “Well I’m reading the book. It shouldn’t take more than 20 years,” says Vos, chuckling. “What you need to know is pretty easy.” \

first met Osmanthus in a sip of tea. I knew it was not jasmine, not rose petal and definitely not chrysanthemum. The aroma from that cup was a bouquet of light, captivating floral notes mixed with sunshine. Or so I thought, some 20 years ago. I did not know then that the tiny, dried petals of Osmanthus fragrans have been used in Chinese cuisine to flavour tea, desserts, wine and cosmetics for generations. The Chinese call it guihua. I remember Osmanthus when I think of scented flowers because of that first contact in a cup of green tea. However, each person perceives a scent differently. It is, therefore, good to meet the plant before you take it home. See it, smell it when you visit your neighbourhood nurseries. That way you can personally rate the plant’s habit and scent. It is often said that Osmanthus fragrans smells like apricots, but to me, the scent is more like gardenia or maybe boronia. The Osmanthus near my front door must be suffering an identity crisis by now, for it is also said that Osmanthus flowers FOOTNOTE: in winter. My Osmanthus, Sweet olive, one of about of indeterminate parentage, 30 species of Osmanthus, is starts flowering in summer native to temperate Asia, from and pumps out its heady scent the Himalayas and eastward to all through autumn. I am not China and Japan. One species, complaining. There are many O. americanus is native to varieties of O. fragrans, known south-eastern US. Sweet olive also as sweet olive. resides in the same family – Sweet olive was cultivated Oleaceae – as the olive, in China for more than 2000 Olea europaea. years before being introduced to the West in the mid-1800s, according to US records. It came to Australia, too, about that time. Don Teese who, with his brother, Peter, owns the Yamina Rare Plants nursery in Monbulk, says he has seen 1800s catalogues listing sweet olive cultivars. Other species of Osmanthus, such as O. heterophyllus and O. delavayi, are also found in Melbourne. The former has holly-like leaves, and the latter is a bigger plant with smaller foliage. A relatively new Goshiki cultivar has variegated leaves. Some sweet olive cultivars have yellow and orange flowers. Among its many relatives, sweet olive is something of a star, rising above the scrum by scent alone. In terms of looks, Osmanthus is frumpy, with stiff, woody stems and unremarkable leaves. The white flowers, sprouting in small clusters from the wood, are so small that they’d not draw a glance. Their fragrance, however, will stop you in your tracks. One small plant like the one by my front door can perfume the house on a warmish, breezy day if the door is ajar. For fragrance in autumn, few flowers can beat this evergreen, which grows easily in Melbourne. It takes the heat well, says Don Teese, and prefers neutral to slightly acidic soils. It can also bloom throughout the year, but not as profusely as summer and autumn. Despite its long cultivation history, the secrets of Osmanthus fragrans, have been unravelled only recently in An Illustrated Monograph of the Sweet Osmanthus Cultivars in China, published in 2008. Reseachers found and categorised in detail more than 160 O. fragrans cultivars when there were thought to be only about 40. I would hazard a guess that, given time, sweet olive will one day be prettier, bigger and more colourful. For me, though, it can look dowdy and still be one bush I will never regret planting. \

The Garden of

Earthly Delights The colour, crunch and erotic allure of pomegranates add a new dimension to the seedy side of life, writes JUDITH HUGHES

T

hrough the centuries the fruit of the pomegranate tree, with its juicy edible pulp, has for artists been a source of visual delight and symbolism. First recorded in Persia, they were grown in the Holy Land, and ancient Egyptians were buried with them. The fruit was on Catherine of Aragon’s crest, so when Henry replaced her with Anne Boleyn, the new coat of arms was a white dove pecking at a pomegranate. Juliet tried to convince her Romeo that it was the nightingale and not the lark that sang on “yon pomegranate tree”. On Caravaggio’s canvases, the glistening ruby seeds burst forth sumptuously. Greek legend has it that Zeus allowed Persephone to visit her forlorn, earthly mother each spring but ensured she returned to the underworld by tricking her into eating four seeds of the addictive pomegranate. It was because I know all this that a recent sighting of a tree abundant with ripe red fruit in Hawthorn sent me into a spin. The owners had been so enchanted by the graceful old tree that they designed their front garden around its arching shape. Helen Fary with her landscape designer, Helen Seymour (of Helen Seymour Exteriors), removed everything else from the garden (the bamboo was fed to the elephants at the zoo).

Main: The pomegranate tree in Helen Fary’s front garden. Right: Helen Fary with her children in the garden. (darrian Traynor)

The span of the tree is accentuated by an elliptical path of small black-and-white paving stones, which boldly highlight the colour of the fruit. To reach the front door of the Victorian house, one must walk around this majestic tree. Feng shui experts would surely make an allowance for this exceptional feature. It’s a tree that, like a piece of sculpture, invites you to circle it, seeing it from every angle. Helen Fary says that the luxuriousness of the pomegranate inspired their choice of lush and verdant plants to complement it. I wasn’t the only passerby to notice this autumnal delight. Maria Pentari, from the nearby fruit shop in Tooronga Road, asked Helen whether she could have a couple of branches dripping with fruit because the tree brought back memories of her childhood in Greece. This year has been the most bountiful harvest yet and Helen’s family has been adding the seeds to couscous and making a sweet syrup for ice-cream. I’ll go out on a limb and say that nothing adds a sense of the exotic to a menu like the words “sprinkled with pomegranate seeds”. The colour, the crunch, the erotic allure ... all this AND anti-oxidants. Pomegranate trees do have that effect on you – having succumbed to the heavenly delights of the jewelled fruit, like Persephone, I would go to hell and back to revisit such a gem. \

river runs through it. Riverbend, aptly named because it is on a bend of the Yarra River, is one of a select group of only seven properties in this part of Lower Plenty to have absolute river frontage. The property, set on about 11,000 square metres of land, has marvellous panoramic views towards Westerfolds Park. With visiting ducks, native pigeons, parrots plus the occasional koala, platypus and wedge-tailed eagle, this could be the next best thing to having a country retreat. It even has its own pumping rights to supply the native garden. Yet is it just 21 kilometres from the city. Riverbend is an absolute stunner of a place. The house, which is at the end of a driveway with a grass-fringed pond, is built on the highest part of the property so that it captures the views across the bushland to the river. Owners George and Ann Littlewood – he’s an engineer, she’s an artist with a passion for wood carving – commissioned architect Ande Bunbury, who specialises in environmentally sensitive designs, to redo the entire house. “It was originally a 1970s builders’ special,” says George. “The whole objective was to make it part

of its environment. We were very keen to preserve the integrity of the place and to make it like a bush sculpture.” Ceilings were raised and the place opened up. One of the architect’s signatures is the use of windows of different sizes so that, instead of large sheets of glass, they vary in size from small timber-framed windows that gradually become large picture windows. Red and green glass details are repeated throughout the house. The architect also rearranged the living areas and created a feature wall of Smartrock (concrete made to look like stacked stone) around the fireplace.

BARRY PLANT, 9499 7992 28 Montpelier Drive, Lower Plenty Price: $ 1.7 million + Sale by set date: August 10 at 6pm Fast facts: Absolute riverfront property, architect renovation, en suite, study, studio/workshop, timber deck, granite kitchen with Smeg appliances, hydronic floor heating, separate laundry, air-conditioning, swimming pool, indoor-outdoor entertaining, uninterrupted views of the bush and river, ponds and environmentally friendly garden surrounds.

LOWER PLENTY

21 KILOMETRES FROM THE CBD

Wide glass doors slide open to a generous timber deck that overlooks the trees, garden terraces and wetlands down by the river. On the northern side of the living area, doors open to the swimming pool and surrounding terrace. Wide eaves are designed to protect the house from the sun and rain. The kitchen combines black granite benchtops with extensive timber cabinets and panelling. There is a Smeg stainless steel oven and a red glass splashback. The house is designed so that the kitchen, living and dining zones are on one side of the slate-floored entry hall with

the bedrooms and study on the other side. At one end of the entry hall a picture window looks to a pond and stacked stone wall with a dramatic water feature that is part of the box guttering. The renovation is marked by exquisite detail and cleanliness of lines. There are no cornices, no skirting boards and shadow line on walls just above floor height. Wide doors slide into wall cavities. Blackwood timber details are another signature touch. It is used in the main bedroom suite, which has interesting blackwood timber shelving and side units. This bedroom, which has a picture window taking in the picturesque view, also has an en suite. One of the highlights of the design is the study. Timber bookshelves line the walls, but by pressing a specially engineered panel, a section of the bookshelf opens pneumatically to reveal Ann’s workshop. Like all the other rooms, it has a view of the bush. Riverbend has been proclaimed a “Land for Wildlife Property” and is recognised by the Department of Sustainability as being environmentally sound. As well as creating a garden from native plants and using local mud stones found on the property, all household water is recycled to use in the garden and fill the ponds. \

mharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

Top: The ponds make good use of recycled water.

Semi-rural, it is on the north-eastern outskirts of Melbourne at the junction of the Yarra and Plenty rivers. The suburb adjoins Heidelberg, famous for being the birthplace of the Heidelberg School, the 19th-century art movement that produced some of Australia’s best-known painters including Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin. Lower Plenty is also known for its large houses on substantial blocks of land. Compared with other suburbs, it has a low density of urban dwellings but is blessed with much natural beauty and wide-open spaces. Horses still graze in some of the more rustic pockets, while the the Main Yarra Trail and Plenty River Trail give locals access to the beauty of the river in a bushland setting. Significant buildings include the Lower Plenty Hotel, the Heidelberg Golf Club and the Christian Brothers’ Amberley Retreat Centre.

Centre: The living and dining rooms form one large area. Above: Glass doors open to the generous timber deck.

HARI RAJ finds that variety is the space of life.

ELTHAM The vendors moved herefrom the inner city and absolutely adore the luxury of space. The house is set back from the road, surrounded by beautiful gardens landscaped by the second-prize winner in this year’s Chelsea Flower Show. At first glance, the house is all sleek modern lines, but just wait until you get inside. It’s airy and light-filled, thanks to the clever use of space throughout and floor-to-ceiling windows that maximise the appeal of its elevated position. There’s a rumpus room on the left as you enter, and it comes in particularly handy for children when you are entertaining upstairs. The upper floor is curved; the main bedroom is at one end, with its spa bath-fitted en suite, along with another bedroom and bathroom. The other end has three bedrooms, which share a bathroom, and a study nook. The centre of the house is a family/meals area next to one of the longest kitchen counters you’ll

There are two separate forward-facing decks and a longer deck at the rear that follows the contour of the house. It is this back area, which has a pool and another deck on a higher level, that makes the house an entertainer’s dream come true; there’s ample space for barbecues and guests to wander around. And, best of all, the way this house uses space means there are no cavernous empty areas when they’ve left – just a comfortable, roomy expanse to enjoy. \

MILES, 9497 3222 10 Sugar Gum Court, Viewbank Price: $680,000 - $720,000 Auction: July 24 at 11am

The lounge, living and dining areas of this Viewbank house flow seamlessly through to the al fresco deck, allowing air and potential guests to circulate freely. The sun streams into these areas via floor-to-ceiling windows that show off the great views – you can see the greenery of the beautiful Yarra Valley Metropolitan Park, across the road, all the way through to the Dandenong Ranges. Two bedrooms are north-facing, along with the deck, and there’s also a double garage with a workshop or store space. The house is on the corner of an elevated cul-de-sac, so it’s got lots of lawn space, and it is close to public transport and shops. \

FLETCHERS REAL ESTATE, 9430 1111 21 Springthorpe Boulevard, Macleod Price: $600,000 – $690,000 Expressions of Interest: Closing July 20 at 5pm

This well-maintained townhouse has lots of architecturally designed touches, such as a loft ceiling and private courtyards accessed via french doors. It’s just five years old, but is designed to match the surrounding buildings. In fact, there’s more to the historic theme – the area was also a destination for retired servicemen, who are honoured with a nearby memorial avenue. The house is notably airy and light-filled, and is situated in an estate with a heavy emphasis on the community. As a resident, the new owner of this house would also be entitled to use the facilities at the exclusive Springthorpe Country Club, in addition to invitations to regular social get-togethers. La Trobe University and Macleod station are just a short walk away. \

DARREN JONES, 9432 2544 18 Daviesia Drive, Plenty Price: $800,000 – $900,000 Auction: July 24 at 12.30pm

PLENTY This two-storey family house is all about size. Importantly, however, its rooms aren’t just big – they’re well-proportioned, too, which makes for elegant interiors. There’s a study on the right as you enter, with a double garage on the left. The living and dining areas are impressively large, as is the family area. Next to the kitchen with its island kitchen counter is a nice meals area, which receives plenty of light streaming from the sun through bay windows. The bay windows look onto the undercover outdoor entertainment area, which in turn gives way to the solar-heated, self-cleaning 10-metre pool. There’s also room outdoors for a kids’ play area; the vendors have it set up with a cubbyhouse and a swing set.

Upstairs is an enormous main bedroom – there’s even space for a couch to bask in the sun from a bank of bay windows – with a similarly proportioned walk-in wardrobe and en suite with spa bath. There’s also a rumpus room or upstairs family room, which can be converted into a fifth bedroom with a simple renovation. The three other bedrooms on this floor are oversized, each with a built-in wardrobe. The neighbourhood is quiet, and the greenery of Plenty Park is just a brisk walk away. \

On an elevated corner block in Viewbank, this property is right in the middle of the school zone. The house is well kept and would be great for those with young families; it’s also close to parkland and aged-care facilities, making it a viable option for those with elderly relatives.
