ystery and conjecture add to the interest in this house, set on 1551 square metres in Eaglemont’s famous Mount Eagle Estate. Many people attribute its design to modernist architect Frederick Romberg, who lived and worked in the area. Flat-roofed, it was built in 1947 and is set over three levels on the high side of this curvilinear street. Take the sweeping driveway or the steps at the side of the property. Either way, you arrive at the front lawn and garden bordered by low stone retaining walls. An elm tree and mature blue spruce are perfect examples of the plantings in this part of the world. From there, a flight of terrazzo steps leads to the terrace that extends across the width of the house. Nearly every room has views over the garden and – just as the estate was intended – the front rooms, courtesy of their large windows, have huge views that extend to the Dandenong Ranges. Buying this house is like buying a slice of history. This was the first and most successful of Walter Burley Griffin’s estates in Victoria. He designed it to maximise the potential of the sloping site, giving each block a grand view and a feeling of being part of the whole landscape.

Nearby is a house Burley Griffin designed for journalist and artist Matcham Skipper. A few doors down the road is one of the Arts and Crafts houses designed by another famous architect, Harold Desbrowe Annear. This house, updated and modernised, now includes a swimming pool and a contemporary kitchen to make it a large and comfortable family home. The formal living and dining rooms capture light through windows to the north and east. The architect might wince at the marble tiles around the perimeter of the room and open fireplaces embellished with marble surrounds, but many original features remain: porthole windows – even in the walk-in wardrobe; the flat roof; the metal-framed corner windows and the large rooftop terrace. The floor plan is a neat one. A bedroom at the front of the house overlooks the garden. The large laundry is near the kitchen and next to a modernised bathroom. These utilitarian rooms are neatly tucked out of sight beside the staircase. Today a kitchen at the back of the house is pretty much standard. In this house, the kitchen – with contemporary stainless steel benches, Smeg appliances and glass splashback – is at the front of the house, with the sink at the front window, so whoever is standing there can appreciate the views to the hills.

The meals area and family room, with an open fireplace, make up the rest of this space. On the first floor, two large bedrooms and a bathroom are grouped off the landing. The main bedroom, which is large, even by today’s standards, has a walk-in wardrobe, which may have been a nursery originally. The second bedroom is also large. The bathroom is made up of three discrete spaces: the separate toilet; modern tiled bathroom with bath and two basins; and a third separate shower room. A door from the landing opens to the roof terrace, which is bigger than the master bedroom and sums up what people love about living in Eaglemont – the views past the treetops to the hills in the distance. The rumpus room or retreat on the lower ground level has an open fireplace and would make a great place for teenagers to hang out with their friends. This room opens via large doors to the front garden, while a small bedroom on this level also has doors to the garden. At the other end of the floor is a large wine cellar. This house also offers great outdoor entertaining. The back door opens to the sandstone terrace, which leads to the swimming pool. Steps go up to the large back lawn, which is bordered by a curved garden bed with established trees. The tea-tree fences blend in with rustic feel of the garden. A double gate opens from the back garden into the The Eyrie, a pedestrian walkway that is like having a country lane beside your property. With features such as this, it is little wonder houses in this part of Eaglemont are tightly held. \

10 KILOMETRES NORTH-EAST OF THE CBD In the 19th century, a group of artists, including Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin, Arthur Streeton and Charles Conder, worked in the original home on Mount Eagle. This group of artists became known as the Heidelberg School. Streets in the area and neighbouring Ivanhoe East are named after these artists. In 1915, Walter Burley Griffin, who had recently arrived from the US, was commissioned to design the suburb and create a unique area maximising the sloping site. Parks that do not take up street frontages but use spare land in the irregular planning design, became a defining feature of the suburb. Many houses back onto these parks. Eaglemont is also known for its exotic trees, winding avenues, rockeries and stone retaining walls. For a quaint glimpse into the past, you can’t beat the Eaglemont shops, where it looks as though time stopped in the mid-20th century. Eaglemont station is next to the village. The suburb’s long list of famous residents includes many artists and architects, among them Frederick Romberg, Robin Boyd and Harold Desbrowe Annear, as well as noted designer Grant Featherston. Eaglemont has always attracted people with money who like the suburb’s natural beauty, parks and proximity to the Yarra and artistic heritage.

IVANHOE EAST What’s the difference between well maintained and lovingly maintained? This 1950s house is definitely the latter. The vendors are just the second owners, and they have put an enormous amount of care into it. Take the garage, for instance, painstakingly converted into a workshop, and the carport that was built as an alternative to provide cover. An extension at the back of the house cleverly captures light and gives great views of the lovely back garden and terrace. The formal dining room looks onto both the back and front gardens; as the vendor points out, it’s attractive in daylight, and in summertime doors on each side can be opened to let a breeze flow through the house.
