THE UNCOMFORTABLE TRUTH ABOUT A HOME AMONG THE GUM TREES

T

he film Wolf Creek 2 may have helped cement Australia’s reputation as a scary place, but it has not damaged it. International backpackers are flocking to the real Wolfe Creek Crater in the West Australian Kimberley half hoping to feel a tiny frisson of the horror of the cinematic experience. But many locals don’t need the barely fictionalised spectres of Ivan Milat or Bradley Murdoch to regard the bush warily. Ever since the arrival of the First Fleet, white European settlers have been bushwhacked by their new environment. With the landscapes of their minds filled with rolling English hills and the chocolate box prettiness of Europe, the earliest colonial artists struggled to capture the light, colour and vastness of the Australian interior. Early literature reinforced the great Australian anxiety with the recurring motif of white settler children lost in the bush. It didn’t help new settlers to discover that the country was also home to a host of deadly creatures including nine of the top 10 most venomous snakes in the world. Is it any wonder most of the population clings to the coastal strip, sandwiched between the deadly things of the interior and the deadly things of the sea? But even here we are not safe. This month an eight-year-old girl was killed and two other children and a teacher were injured when a large branch fell from a gum tree in the grounds of a Sydney

school. Less than two months earlier, a four-year-old girl died and her mother was paralysed when a branch came down while they were walking in a park in central Victoria. This has provoked an inevitable backlash, with many councils reporting increased requests for removal of “dangerous” trees. It doesn’t matter that many, many more people are killed – in many cases as a direct result of their own stupidity – by driving into trees while speeding, texting, affected by drugs, alcohol or fatigue. In the face of the community’s helpless anger, eucalypts have become the

pit bulls of suburban parks and gardens, to be culled like the sharks off the coast of Western Australia. But it’s not flora or fauna that’s our most dangerous enemy. As Sea Shepherd’s Australian director Jeff Hansen said at one of the many rallies to protest against the WA government’s shark cull of the Great White: “If you want to know what causes the most destruction in terms of the ocean, you only need look in the mirror.” The Great White is the doctor of the ocean. It helps maintain the balance of the underwater world – its natural habitat, not ours. To kill them impoverishes the ocean upon which we rely for our own survival. The people killed by sharks should be put in perspective of those who are not. Similarly, if a branch falls in an empty park, no one would fear it. It’s more than 120 years since Ethel Turner penned Seven Little Australians in which the beautiful, feisty Judy sacrificed her life by throwing herself bodily over the baby of the family to protect him from a widow-maker. The tree, however, was not the root of the problem at the heart of this classic Australian story. It was the pride of the patriarch Captain Woolcot, who set off a chain of events that culminated in tragedy. More contemporaneously, as Wolf Creek 2 reminds us, the worst kind of shark is man, even if we can’t always see it for the trees. \ sharris@theweeklyreview.com.au

Theatre \ Director Darylin Ramondo found her calling in drama, musicals and mentoring others, writes julia millard

D

arylin Ramondo is leading the way for the Geelong theatre scene. She’s an award-winning actor, director and producer and is bringing out the best in local performers. The Highton resident got involved in acting aged just 10 after her great aunt introduced her to the GSODA Juniors, a Geelong youth theatre company. “She introduced me into acting because I was incredibly shy when I was younger,” Ramondo says. “It certainly did the trick, too.” Ramondo has led a life of varied careers. In the mid-1980s she started acting professionally through Griffin Theatre Company in Sydney, after studying drama at The Rocks Players. Then a cruise company contracted her as an onboard actor and cabaret performer and, more recently, she

worked for the Geelong Football Club. “As part of the cruise ship’s theatre company, I performed cabaret onboard. I then stayed on for a second year as a cruise director and cabaret artist,” she says. “After travelling extensively overseas and marrying my husband in Italy, I returned to Geelong to raise a family.” On her return, she realised 16-25-year-olds were not getting involved in acting or in local productions. In 1993 Ramondo took matters into her own hands and founded a production company called Doorstep Productions. Then in 2007 Doorstep Ensemble evolved. “Doorstep Productions was originally a youth theatre, and now it has transformed into an ensemble company,” she says. “I’m really proud of the company and how far it has

come. Actors come to Geelong from all over to perform in our productions. “There are some amazing artists that come out of Geelong as well, and it’s great that they come back. They give Geelong great exposure when they head to other places with their acting, too.” Natalie O’Donnell is one of the actors who has returned to Geelong and is performing as a lead in Ramondo’s coming production, Next to Normal. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and three Tony Awards, Next to Normal is described as an emotional rollercoaster ride and a wonderful, one-off musical theatre experience. Ramondo says this production is often perceived as dark and deep but it’s actually told in a heartfelt and humorous way.

“We have added our own twist to it,” she says. “It follows situations that happen in most families and how it affects them, so it’s about love, loss and a family, together through thick and thin. It also has a mental health theme.” Ramondo says her productions are a bit different from other companies’ offerings. “My productions always have a twist. I add my own Doorstep flavour, which goes against standard expectations,” she says. “I love entertaining audiences and like to surprise them or evoke some reaction from them.” The former Belmont High School student admits it’s hard to make a living from theatre. For more than a decade she worked for the Cats while performing in theatre on the side.

She was the club’s football operations and player development co-ordinator and says it was a great experience. “Some of the footballers would come to my shows just to support me. They ended up being surprised and actually enjoying themselves,” Ramondo says. Although she loved working with the players, Ramondo finished at the club in November 2012 so she could focus on theatre. “I’m pleased just to be able to focus on the arts now. It was my dream,” she says. “I’m lucky to have three children and a husband who support the crazy hours I do, the people coming to and from the house and the stage sets and costumes lying around everywhere.” Ramondo has won various awards in the Victorian

Music Theatre Guild Awards. They include best actress in a supporting role in 2013 as Madame Thénardier in Les Misérables, best leading actress for Sweeney Todd in 2005, and director of the year in 2002 for Chicago, to name a few. These days, Ramondo acts only occasionally, choosing to focus on directing. She also works part-time for another local company, Back to Back Theatre. “I just have a love for theatre and a love for mentoring young people. I love watching them create different and innovative productions,” she says. Ramondo says it would be great to get more people interested in Geelong arts. “It really is a sport-dominated city. But, in saying that, there are still a lot of people here interested in arts,” she says. “It’s just about getting it out into the general community and letting people know Geelong has some incredible talent. “We have amazing theatre companies here who are constantly putting out good work and opportunities for local people.” Ramondo says her newest production, Next to Normal, has six actors, six musicians and a talented production team. The crew has been practising three times a week for eight weeks to get the show together. “It’s so satisfying to see the final product after all the hard work put in,” she says. “Being a director, you need to have a vision of where you see it finishing and you have to be open and adaptive. GEELONG HIGHLAND GATHERING \ March 2 Haggis, tartan, highland flings and bagpipes were in plentiful supply as thousands of Scots – and those who wished they were – got together to celebrate the best of Scottish culture at the Geelong Highland Gathering. The stirring sounds of traditional Scottish pipe and drum bands filled the air at the Deakin University oval as 17 pipe bands competed in the South-West Victoria championships. “Our band is from Bendigo and we’ve been going for 64 years and we’ve always been a strong competitive band,” said Helen Gilks of the Golden City Pipe Band. The South Pacific Heavy Games were fought over six disciplines, ranging from shot put – using a variety of rocks – to tossing the caber. Commonwealth Games shot put gold medallist Scott Martin is a devotee of the sport: “This is a new challenge after competing at the Olympics,” he said. Another-eye catching activity was a demonstration by the Melbourne Swordplay Guild, which proved that ancient combat techniques aren’t quite dead.
