Allan Willet served in an RAAF transport squadron during WWII, spending four Christmas Days away from home. He is the president of the Extreme Disablement Adjustment (EDA) Association, which meets monthly at the Geelong RSL.

taste this

Lance Family Wines Friends of Punch Syrah 2010 (Geelong) $28; 12% ★★★★★ stalky

50 0

$ $

0 0 00

The grapes are from Bannockburn and it’s made in the Yarra Valley. This has complex aromas: stalky, sappy, perfumed and spicy (fennel seeds and white pepper). Earth, red cherries, blood plum and blackberry characters also poke through. It’s silky smooth, with similar, intense flavours that match the aroma profile, with bright acid and fine-grained, stalky tannins and loads of intensity and length. This was even better drinking after being open a day. Food match \ Grilled quail

Oakdene Jessica Sauvignon Blanc 2012 (Geelong) $28; 13% ★★★★ ½ complex

GifitfV oo uu cc hh ee rr G tV

A good sav blanc is harder to find than you may think. Here’s one. It smells lovely, with sav blanc’s trademark herbaceousness playing a background role with tropical fruits, nectarine and some smoky oak to the fore. It is fermented and matured for eight months in French oak barrels – 15 per cent are new – and the influence is positive with texture, complexity and none of the overt notes that often make sav blanc a one-dimensional, one-glass wine. Lemon juice and zest, sweet pawpaw and lemongrass flavours carry on for a long time. Food match \ Fresh-shucked oysters

Mt Moriac Pinot Gris 2010 textural

(Geelong) $15; 12.5% ★★★★

Mt Moriac tends to hold on to its wines rather than rushing them out to market (many Victorian gris producers have already released their 2013s). The extra bottle age seems to suit them well. This is bright and lively, and there’s a lot going on in this complex wine. It has pear, tropical fruits, zesty citrus, smoky oak and a grassy, herbal note. It’s rich and textural, with an energetic line of acid that keeps it on the straight and narrow. A punchy, crunchy finish of citrus and new-season pear carries nicely through the finish. Food match \ Peking duck

Paradise IV Chardonnay 2011 seductive

(Geelong) $45; 13% ★★★★★ Chardonnay is my favourite white and I could drink a load of this. Rich, alluring aromas include layers of stonefruit, nuts, fig, citrus and a kiss of cedary-accented vanilla oak. It’s seductive in the mouth, too, with a smooth and creamy texture and an intense spine of bright acidity that the fleshy flavours can hang off. There’s minerality in the background as well. Balance, drive and a delicious, refreshing finish – with all of that, the wine has an effortless feel that’s simply a joy to drink. Can’t ask for more. Food match \ Grilled chicken

love a bargain … Austins Six Foot Six Shiraz 2010 smooth

(Geelong) $20; 14% ★★★★ ½

The Moorabool Valley is a hidden gem on the Victorian shiraz landscape. I doubt it will be for much longer when wines like this are available for $20. This smells great – it’s meaty, stalky and full of dark fruits, cured meats and is lifted by whole-bunch stalky characters. A smooth texture, bright acid and soft tannins are in structural harmony. There’s also a lengthy finish of stewed plum, dark cherry, dried herb and marzipan. It may age well, but why wait? Food match \ Lamb chops

THE TIME FOR GIVING F

rom serving food to the homeless on our city’s streets, to answering telephone calls at a crisis support service, it seems that Christmas brings out the best in many of us. At a time when the focus is often on family, friends, sharing and celebrations, a dependable band of volunteers step away from all that and work hard to bring comfort and solace to thousands in need. Here, we talk to a few people who’ll spend part of their Christmas in the service of others … A LEADING LIGHT

For the past 39 years, Paul Worsnop and his family have sold candles and programs at Vision Australia’s Carols by Candlelight service. This year, seven of Worsnop’s family members will take charge of their usual stall inside the Sidney Myer Music Bowl. Worsnop first helped at the event with his parents and brothers when he was 15. He now volunteers with his wife, his 12-year-old son and his extended family. “It’s a family tradition and it’s something we look forward to every year. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without being part of Carols,” he says. “I like the notion of doing something good for an organisation like Vision Australia and it’s a very joyful occasion for us as a family. We exchange gifts during the evening and it’s a major gathering for us.” Worsnop first became involved when his family was part of a community orchestra that volunteered at Carols by Candlelight. When the orchestra later disbanded, the Worsnops continued to sell candles and programs at the event. “As a kid I remember looking out at a sea of candles as far as the eye could see and that was amazing. One year the TV crew even took me up in the cherrypicker – that wouldn’t be allowed now,” says Worsnop, laughing. The family arrives at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl at 4pm on Christmas Eve, they collect boxes of candles, set up their stall and serve customers throughout the night. They leave about 11pm once everything is packed away. “One of my favourite moments is when I hear the traditional carols and the candles are lit,” says Worsnop. “It’s a very spiritual moment regardless of what your faith is.” MAKING WISHES COME TRUE

Wendy Jones helps the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal deliver presents to Melbourne’s poor and disadvantaged. Last year more than 443,000 gifts were donated to the Kmart Wishing Tree Appeal and Jones spent many hours helping to collect those gifts. For the past eight years, as customer service manager at Kmart in Corio, Jones put in her own time to encourage locals to donate. This year she’s doing the same thing in the Werribee shop and she has a very personal reason for dedicating her time to the Christmas appeal. “From when I was four years old until 10 I was a ward of the state. Mum was sick and in and out of hospital and I was one of six children. Dad was working and my parents loved me but just couldn’t look after us kids,” says Jones. 12 The weekly review \ DECEMBER 19, 2013

worsnop family

“So I spent those years in children’s homes and on Christmas Day I’d receive donated presents. I remember waking up on Christmas morning and being given a pillowcase with four or five gifts inside. It made Christmas special. One year I received the very latest Pat Benatar album and that was a really big deal!” Jones begins planning an appeal launch in September and asks local celebrities and schoolkids to come along. When the appeal is under way she collects and logs the donated gifts at the end of each day and twice a week they are collected by the Salvation Army, who then distributes them to people across Melbourne. “Every year one lady in Corio bought gifts on special throughout the year and she’d put them away for the appeal. At Christmas she’d arrive with two trolleys filled with presents and kept donating. One year I counted 170 gifts from her alone,” says Jones. “The highlight of being involved for me is knowing that, every Christmas, this helps someone. I’m just giving back what I was given all those years ago in the children’s home.” OFFERING A LIFELINE

Monica is a volunteer telephone counsellor with Lifeline. Christmas is a particularly busy time for the service. On an average Christmas Day, Lifeline receives more than 2000 calls for help from people across the country – all of them feeling lonely, distressed and in need of kindness and understanding. Monica has volunteered with Lifeline for eight years and she is one of a team of people nationally who provide that much-needed opportunity for people to discuss their fears and concerns.

wendy jones

“I was at a stage in my life when I wanted to give something back. I had more time because my children were older and I’m quite a good listener,” she says. After a thorough training program that included suicide intervention, role playing and learning how to manage scenarios such as family violence and mental illness, Monica volunteers regularly at Lifeline’s Melbourne centre. She says volunteers are supported through debriefing, supervision and ongoing education. When she arrives, she receives an update briefing from the shift supervisor, sits at a desk and computer, logs in and takes calls for a three- or four-hour shift. “Christmas and the build-up to Christmas are busy

monica CHRISTMAS ALL WRAPPED UP

but the themes of the calls are the same – they are focused around the losses people experience,” she says. “At this time of year I think the feelings of loss are more pronounced. There’s such a Pollyanna view of Christmas – suddenly everything should be happy – but that’s not the reality for a lot of people. Christmas instead can remind people of how life used to be or how they’d like life to have been. So people reach out for help. “When you walk away you have to leave what you have heard behind, but you do hope you’ve made a difference to someone by listening, hearing their pain and empowering them,” she says. “And you can’t help but reflect on your own life and how fortunate you are. It’s rewarding work.”

Since she was a university student, Winnie Wong has been a voluntary gift wrapper at Myer. While she was completing a double degree in commerce and engineering at Monash University, Wong decided to do something that would distract her from the weight of her studies. When someone told her about the voluntary gift-wrapping initiative at Myer outlets, which raises money for Vision Australia, Wong armed herself with doug walsh ribbons and wrapping paper and offered her services. “My days studying were hectic but I didn’t just want to Melbourne one Wednesday night to meet people to be head-down in my books and I wanted to do who were sleeping rough. W

hen Jack Fitzgerald’s mother’s horse had an altercation with a fence there were no winners but, being an innovative thinker, 16-year-old Fitzgerald came up with the idea for the plastic strip Wia-Coat that would easily clip on to an existing fence to make it more visible. Fast forward 11 years and this entrepreneur is now a successful businessman and his innovative company Think Fencing has developed a range of fencing products all geared to provide safety in equine and rural applications. “Safety has become a real issue in the equine industry. After Wia-Coat I upgraded with a new product Equi Rail, \ which does away with wire altogether. Rather than clipping something on to the existing wire, we found owners more inclined to redo their fencing. It is easy to install, flexes when a horse comes in contact with it, and has over 800 kilograms breaking strain,” enthuses Fitzgerald. Next up was Zappa Rail, with high-tensile wire built into the top and bottom of the fence. Covering the top wire is a highly conductive polymer that allows electricity to be transferred through the wire and earthed out on any animal or person who touches it. “From the success of those two products we then invested quite a bit of money in developing our Timberline system, which is a PVC post-and-rail stand-alone fencing system,” Fitzgerald says. “It uses high-tech composites that can create a rural post that can be customised with different rail sizes and configurations. “Using that system we’ve just completed a job for BC3 Thoroughbreds at Connewarre that this year purchased Black Caviar’s half-brother.” Fitzgerald credits family involvement as being “instrumental in keeping me under control, with mum doing the books and dad assisting me with research and development”. He is also excited about receiving an Investing in Manufacturing Technology grant from the Victorian Government Business Offices. The grant will help to develop his latest product, which aims to incorporate world-first technology and may revolutionise the fencing industry. The business is also developing worldwide. “Last year I went to Dubai, where we visited the Meydan racetrack and Abu Dhabi equestrian facility and met some amazing people who are very welcoming to Australians. I hope to develop strong trading relations with the UAE. “A standard PVC polymer in Dubai will last about seven years. In Australia we’ve got one of the harshest environments and we’ve developed technology that enables our products to exceed any similar ones.” Fitzgerald recently visited Inner Mongolia to work with Simtrack, the world’s largest starting-gate producer and TAK Group, the world’s largest racetrack construction and consulting company. “They are looking at our products to potentially install in the many yet-to-be-created racetracks around China.” In 2011 Fitzgerald travelled the east coast of the US to research how the equine industry has embraced PVC composite technology. One thing that stood out was that “there Americans all want white ranch-style fencing, so he has have been developed an extended range of colours and textures. a lot of “I don’t have constraints around manufacturing challenges” limitations so I can talk to customers and work out what they want – if someone says it can’t be done I say, ‘They haven’t tried hard enough’. That’s how we’ve developed these products because we have no boundaries.” Think Fencing has worked for David Hayes’ Lindsay Park, Danny O’Brien Racing at Barwon Heads, Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock in Ballan and is just about to fence the parade ring for the Ballarat racetrack along with Simtrack. And there are exciting times ahead developing his thoroughbred fences. “We are in the final stages of testing our revolutionary running-rail system, which defies all limitations, and we have an affiliation with BlueScope Lysaght, who saw our products at Elmore field days. They were searching for polymer plinth rails and we’re supplying them with our product. “There have been a lot of challenges throughout the growth of the business – it’s all about the challenge, passion and developing new relationships and the exciting potential of the export market.” \ gthomas@theweeklyreview.com.au

GEELONG WEST \ 3 WELLER STREET A vibrant teal front door is the first hint this renovated weatherboard cottage will stand out from the crowd. It more than lives up to the high expectations with its edgy New York-inspired interior. The loft-style design offers elegant, contemporary living with an easy indoor/outdoor flow for entertaining. Distressed timber floors and an exposed, central brick wall with a two-way fireplace create an industrial appeal in the living area and kitchen. The kitchen, with a large island bench and grey gloss cabinetry, opens to a large undercover paved entertainment space bordered by built-in timber bench seating. The main bedroom is at the front of the house behind a sliding timber door, a stunning designer feature. The bedroom includes full-height built-in wardrobes and an en suite tiled in white and grey. The second bedroom, with built-in wardrobes, has easy access to the main bathroom, which has a shower over the freestanding bath. The bathroom also doubles as a laundry – a clever use of the space. The backyard is deceptively spacious and a carport provides off-street parking. There’s a renovated single-car lock-up garage that could be used as a gym, studio or another living zone. Pakington Street’s cafés, restaurants and shops are a short stroll away, and the CBD and Geelong waterfront are also within walking distance. \ SARAH BIESKE

4 Patern Street, Highton

T

ony Moorfoot (Buxton Highton) was in for a workout at 4 Patern Street, Highton, on Saturday as 65 onlookers gathered for the auction of the three-bedroom weatherboard on a big block. It began with an opening offer of $300,000 and 10 bids took the mark to $405,000. The auctioneer said the property was on the market and the action became furious. Three main bidders had clear intentions, with three others dipping in and dropping out. At the $450,000 mark, Moorfoot accepted a $1000 rise and the contest rattled along at a great pace. Two of the combatants were sharing the shade of a tree, and at $506,000 one of them rounded it up to $510,000.

pushed the mark to $730,000, at which point the auctioneer consulted with the vendor. The property was, indeed, on the market, and it was sold at that point. The winning bidder was a local looking to downsize. Tony Young (Whitford) told the 30 people gathered outside 16 Bay Street, Rippleside, that the suburb was simply blue-chip territory. “It’s always had everything here, it always will,’’ he said, before posting a vendor bid of $450,000 for the Californian bungalow that had been in the same family for 75 years. An older gentleman bidding on behalf of his daughter, who had been delayed at the airport, offered $460,000. The property was passed in at that mark, but sold shortly after to the party of the sole bidder. \ PAUL CHAPPLE

Families will fit right in at this contemporary three-level house. With spacious open-plan living and abundant storage throughout, quality finishes are on show from the moment you set foot in the door. Timber floors are used in the entrance hall and again in the kitchen and dining area upstairs. It’s here you will spend most of your time, with a large carpeted living area adjoining the modern kitchen, while views across Fyansford are enjoyed through north-facing windows. There are three bedrooms, but a versatile front room on the ground floor could operate as a fourth bedroom if desired. The main bedroom is also on the lower level and includes a walk-in wardrobe and a large en suite with double vanity. A wide staircase takes you to the second and third bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes, along with a main bathroom and laundry. Sliding doors are a clever design feature throughout that maximise space. You’ll love entertaining on the expansive deck out the back, and a large yard leaves plenty of room for the kids to run around. \ SARAH BIESKE

This terrific property is as spick and span as the day it was built about 10 years ago. Nestled in a quiet pocket of Newcomb and one of a group of three, it would be ideal for downsizers or a small family unit. A step inside the front door and a turn to the left reveals a spacious kitchen and dining area. There are loads of cupboards and a generous amount of bench space in the kitchen, along with stainless-steel appliances; the bench can also be used as a breakfast bar. This area flows back to encompass the living zone. This whole open-plan space, with big windows and a sliding glass door, overlooks a private, well-protected courtyard; this would make a perfect spot for outdoor dining or lazing in the sun. Two big bedrooms, both with built-in wardrobes, a bathroom and a spacious laundry round out the house. The property has a very handy eight-panel solar power system, large enough to cover most, if not all, of the present owner’s electricity costs. A remote-controlled garage completes this impressive package. \ PAUL CHAPPLE

Stroll to Pakington Street for a coffee or hide away in your private oasis – the choice is yours at this updated Californian bungalow in a highly sought-after location. The house has retained much of its period appeal; remarkably, it has only had two owners since it was built in 1925. The formal lounge at the front is packed with heritage features and the nearby main bedroom has a walk-in wardrobe, built-in wardrobes and an en suite. The second bedroom, downstairs, has entry to a two-way bathroom and laundry, while the third and fourth bedrooms are upstairs and include built-in wardrobes and under-roof storage. There’s a second living area to the back of the ground floor, which opens to a contemporary kitchen, the focal point of the house. It includes abundant storage, an appliance pantry and an extended stone bench ideal for dining. The kitchen opens to an undercover entertainment area with built-in barbecue. The tropically themed backyard includes an in-ground pool, cottage gardens and a single lock-up garage. \ SARAH BIESKE

TESTIMONIAL-

Dear Toni I am writing this to thank you for all the hard work you did for us finding the perfect tenants for our Rental property. We are very fussy and at times I am sure we tested your patience, but in the end through your hard work we are very happy with the outcome. From the first time that you contacted us regarding our property we knew that you would do a good job for us. Keep up the good work.

A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Dear Santa, How are you? I am looking forward to Christmas this year. My favourite part about Christmas is opening my presents. This year I would like more Xbox games. This year if you come to my house I will give you milk and a biscuit for you. We will also give carrots for the reindeers. I hope you have a fantastic time delivering the presents around the world. Best wishes for a Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

Dear Santa, For Christmas I would like to wish for a Hot Wheels helmet and a Hot Wheels buggy. I will be a good boy for Santa and my mum and dad. Hanging on my drawers is a painted egg with a present inside for you. You have to smash this egg to get your present out, I painted this egg for you. I hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Love Sid East Geelong
