She says they contribute in many ways – some meet regularly to work on the perennial border and heritage rose beds, some are volunteer guides and then there are the growers, who propagate plants and sell them to raise money. “Uncountable hours, the volunteers put in,” she says. “They have gardens of their own but most of them spend more time here, so this is the garden that benefits. \ KIM NORBURY kimnorbury@theweeklyreview.com.au

ny musician will admit that climbing the rungs of the industry ladder is hard work. A powerful reminder of this was served to Grovedale’s budding songstress Isabella Losi after a brief conversation with Australian singer Josh Pyke. “I met him in Torquay, he was just hanging around and talking to people,” Losi says. “So I said to him, ‘I want to make it in the music industry’, and he responded, ‘Well you better have a crazy amount of self-belief’.” Losi pauses to reflect, before declaring: “And you know what? I think I do”. The 22-year-old singer/songwriter speaks candidly about trying to make it in the notoriously difficult industry over a latté at Pakington Street’s Sticks and Grace Café. Working unpredictable hours for inadequate pay in dingy venues, there’s a thousand other budding musicians just as desperate to be noticed. But you have to be in it to win it. “I heard stories about how his [Pyke’s] first CD was a flop, and record labels would say, thanks but no thanks. Then he was recognised by Triple J and it went from there,” Losi says. It’s not uncommon for aspiring musicians to seek inspiration from the triumphs of others, especially when it involves multiple rejections from music heavyweights. Perhaps it has something to do with the typically Australian instinct to barrack for the underdog, or the desire to prove men in grey suits wrong. Now it’s Losi’s turn to do just that. Music has been a large part of her life since she took up the piano at age six. In the early years of high school she realised she could not only play piano and sing, but could fuse the two together, just like her musical idols Missy Higgins and Delta Goodrem. “I like pure ballads and artists who are true to themselves, like Missy and Delta. I should be saying, I’m into Jimi Hendrix, but it’s actually them,” she says with Scholarship in 2011. Each year, musicians in the a laugh. But while Losi initially grimaces at the thought, she admits the idea is appealing, especially after local singer Imogen Brough’s success on The Voice this year. “It’s such a hard one and I have been considering it,” she says. “We know each other, and after seeing someone from town getting into it, you realise it’s possible. “The thing is, a lot of the time you need to sell yourself to the devil to get anywhere. And I don’t know if I want to do that.” Losi hopes in the next few years she will have a record deal, a studio-length album and an Australian tour in the bag. But at the moment it’s a case of keeping her head down and working away. “I’m apprehensive about finding a real job,” she says with a laugh. “I’m hoping it will work out all right. here’s a theory in hospitality that for every retelling of a good dining experience, a tale of disappointment will be repeated four times. After my initial attempt at dining at Fishbowl, had it not been on my review list, I hazard a guess that I would never have returned and the incident would have received thorough retelling. Having booked a table for 8.30pm on a Friday and driven an hour to get there, I arrived at Fishbowl at 8.34pm to be told by the apologetic waitress that the chef was no longer serving meals. I explained the distance I’d travelled, the booking I’d made, and the premature packing down of a kitchen that claims to open until 9pm. Another couple arrived moments later and the now-embarrassed waitress returned to the kitchen for further discussions. The chef refused to budge and I was left to make the drive back to Melbourne unfed, unhappy and unimpressed. The next night I returned. At 6pm, to be safe. It seems I wasn’t the only one not taking risks. By 7pm the dining room was almost at capacity with frocked-up women and shirted men clinking glasses and marvelling at the sunset. The rush of guests all at once might have tested some staff but those on board shifted up a gear. Wines by the glass (mainly local) were poured at the table and there was a methodical approach to the service that left little room for mistakes. Not that there were any. Fishbowl is one of Geelong’s oldest “occasion” restaurants, having been in the Muhor family as a steak and seafood restaurant for more than 20 years. Recently, the family decided it was time for a major overhaul and rebranding. A fish skeleton illustration lavished across the windows is the most playful element of an otherwise grown-up outfit of plush banquettes, crisp linen and elegant lightshades. A gentle colour palette of beige and oatmeal allows the views and the food to take centre stage. The food holds its own. Even after all my grumblings about the previous night’s debacle with head chef Shaun Xin, I can’t help but like his food. Not that the six freshly shucked oysters needed much help. They arrived plump and perky with a twirl of lemon and lime. A squirt of lemon was all that was needed to lift the flavours. Similarly, the seafood chowder is a dish I would return for. The seafood broth was lightly lifted by cream, chardonnay and the subtle spice of saffron, and loaded with plump scallops, pipis, crabs’ claws and calamari. A crusty chunk of bread wiped with garlic was perfect for dipping into the soup. An entrée of mango chutney and garlic prawns sounded far more exotic than what arrived. The dish was swamped by a sweet-and-sour sauce not mentioned on the menu and competed with the prawns’ gentle flavours, seaweed salad and sticky mango chutney. A Szechuan pepper calamari salad was better

executed. The meaty strips of calamari were scored and served prettily alongside spicy chorizo, bright coriander, chilli, red onion and lovely lemony yoghurt. The pepper lingered long after the plate was whisked from the table. For main, the waitress recommended a Fishbowl signature – seafood gumbo. It’s a meal for two in itself. A giant bowl of messily plated seafood, potato and herbs piled into a rich tomato-based roux. Next time, I would skip the gumbo and try one of the non-seafood options on the menu, a 400-gram aged

rib-eye steak or a five-spiced confit duck perhaps. Fishbowl is a great place for a fancy night out even if the prices are a little steep. But I never would have discovered this had I not swallowed my disappointment and re-booked a table. I don’t know that many people would. \ mjdaffy@theweeklyreview.com.au To read more reviews

If elegance and sophistication were on the design brief when Fishbowl upgraded and redesigned five years ago, aside from the massive and oddly placed television screen on entry, then the designers can tick those two boxes. Sitting opposite a plush banquette wrapping the length of the L-shaped dining room are yawning windows and views across the bay and beyond. Spacious, linen-dressed tables, soft carpet, and wide circular lightshades add a modern refinement. It’s all dressed in muted tones that highlight the views by day and the sense of occasion at night. \

eighanne Michelle lets out a laugh when asked to expand on her throwaway comment about how she moved from general jobbing to becoming a highly qualified and increasingly sought-after milliner. When pressed to tell more of the myriad short courses it took for her to find her craft, she finally concedes with that private little chuckle: “Oh my gosh, I did voiceover courses, computer skills, ballroom dancing …,” she trails off. “I guess I felt I needed a creative outlet and I’d never had one, so for me it was just about starting looking.” Eventually it was a course in millinery at the Council for Adult Education that sparked her light-bulb moment. Something in the engagement of her hands and a pleasure that recalled her time making spring carnival hats for herself opened Michelle’s eyes to future career possibilities. It seems obvious, now, she says with the 20-20 vision that comes with hindsight, that millinery was her path. Perhaps it was the work she had been doing that kept it from being clear: between stints working as a secretary, Michelle was involved in event organisation and management, for a long time working at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. But millinery, it seemed, opened up a new world, one she was keen to explore further. “I pretty much now have the highest millinery qualification in the country,” Michelle says, with some pride, recounting her studies at the Kangan Institute where

her talent is in the art of predicting Trends she expanded the technical side of her training. Fast forward five years since she started her journey in 2008 and the award-winning self-starter has come far, moving into a historic building in central Geelong, where she is free to design her own creative destiny. The timing is ideal: after years developing her business to the point where she can now sustain a shopfront (“I’ve been building clients since finishing my first course”), the new mother has found the arrival of her first child has made working from home limiting. “Now it’s got to the point where the business needs to be separate, the studio is a place for the hats to be showcased and it’s difficult at home to do that among all the personal belongings,” she says. Still, she is honest about the vagaries of a creative field that is notoriously seasonal. It is, she says, a difficult profession to pursue full-time, save for those such as Philip Treacy who enjoy international renown. The solution for this rising star, who made the move from Melbourne to Geelong four years ago, is to “make hay when the sun shines”, which means enduring many a late night once winter draws to a close and spring brings with it the chatter of carnival anticipation. Of course, it is not all long hours and frantic stitching. Much of Michelle’s talent is in the fickle art of predicting trends; with work already well under way on hats to showcase for sale this season, Michelle has to continually form and reassess her strong fashion identity to use as inspiration.

On trend: A selection of Leighanne Michelle’s hats on display at her studio in Geelong. (DArren PhiLLiPs) The hat fits: Leighanne Michelle wearing her own creations, left. (icon Pictures)

To wit, last year’s über brights are this year’s pastels, florals and soft colours, and the industrious milliner is currently working with lilac, “lovely” plum shades, emerald and lots of neutrals, alongside cream and black (“which is always very popular”). Her preferred materials include a type of straw obtained from the leaf of a banana palm, lots of silk organza and silk blooms created using traditional French flower-making methods.

As for how Michelle comes to interpret national and international trends for her own market, well, she says, that’s something of a well-guarded secret. “It’s a bit of a skill,” is all she’ll allow, revealing that while she takes note of overseas predictors of colour and shape as determined by what’s shown on international runways, Australian audiences are different. “There is a lot more colour and flair,” she says, noting that much of her hat-making is done at the behest of entrants to Fashions on the Field – in other words, hats made for women who desire to stand tall above the crowd. Clearly she has become skilled at what she does: taking home first place in a competition at the Royal Melbourne Show in 2010, and included in the invitation-only millinery awards at the Flemington spring carnival last year. In the end, however, the awards form just a small part of her aspiration. For Michelle, much of the pleasure comes in the creative thrill of being part of an industry she adores, of being able to channel her own love for classic Hollywood glamour, fashion and art into her inspirational designs. With Melbourne and Geelong women eagerly knocking down her door to help them create a winning carnival look, clearly Michelle has the right head for the millinery business. \ slewis@theweeklyreview.com.au » www.leighannemichelle.com.au

For me to be involved and help raise money with something I have an abundance of – like the clothes in my wardrobes – is easy.” Many women love to spend on fashion and beauty, but there’s an extra buzz when we repurpose preloved items and fit them in our own sartorial message. Nothing makes the heart beat faster than finding designer-label items for a fraction of their retail value. Give In Style is about being involved in the hunting and gathering and it allows you to buy fashion brands while giving hope to kids who need it most. It’s a win-win situation. “Preloved fashion is the perfect way to mix in with your favourite basics and go-to pieces,” Maxwell says. “The key is to make it your own and give them a new story to tell. I love a good blazer and ripped denim jeans, so rework a well-fitting pair of jeans with DIY rips and get an amazing jacket tailored to fit.” This year, pieces have been donated by Vogue editor Edwina McCann, Bassike founders Mary Lou Ryan and Deb Sams, TV personality Rebecca Judd and fashion designer Yeojin Bae. Rowe says money raised provides vital support for orphaned or abandoned children. “Educational success … can transform a young life and give them the courage to face the challenges that lie ahead,” Rowe says. “More than 160 young people have received essential educational assistance as a result of support from Give in Style. GeelonG Homes brandinG relauncH \ AuGust 29 Geelong Homes’ stunning new display home, the Hamilton Homestead at Bannockburn, was the setting for the launch of the company’s new branding, as it celebrated 20 years of building quality homes in the region. Locals joined staff to admire the new design, set on a .76-hectare block of landscaped garden only a few hundred metres from the town and about 22 kilometres from Geelong. Geelong Homes’ newly appointed general manager Andrew Carroll said the company was poised to continue its impressive growth into the new financial year and beyond. “As Geelong continues to stake its claim as one of the largest regional hubs in Australia, and with even more growth and prosperity predicted over the coming years, Geelong Homes is proud to be one of the few locally owned and operated builders servicing the growing needs of the region,” he said. “Our new brand is symbolic of how far we have come in the industry and how we plan on guiding Geelong Homes safely into the next few decades.” \ words & pictures mark smith

emember that week in early June when foul, freezing weather plunged everyone into despair? I don’t. By sheer luck I’d booked a break on Magnetic Island, so while Melbourne endured the depths of winter I was in a place where it’s always summer. Maggie has about 320 sunny days a year and an average maximum of 28 degrees – far better odds for a winter escape than the Gold Coast, Cairns or Bali. With direct flights from Melbourne to Townsville, summertime is never more than three hours away. The biggest surprise about the island is not that it’s so affordable, or that the cane toad races are so much fun, or that there are 25 mostly drop-dead gorgeous beaches. No, the biggest surprise is that there was hardly anyone

there. It felt like I’d stumbled on a secret paradise. I’m already planning a return visit this month. Ideally I’d follow the inspiring example of one of the island’s bus drivers, a climate refugee from Geelong, who told me he’d planned to stay on Magnetic Island only for six months. “That was seven years ago,” he said. “Nothing could convince me to move back to Australia now.” \ khill@theweeklyreview.com.au » Jetstar flies from Melbourne direct to Townsville, www.jetstar.com.au/ The Sealink ferry from Townsville to Magnetic costs $32 return full-fare. Holiday rentals are a mainstay of the Magnetic Island economy. Rent anything from a fibro shack or beachfront apartment to Lotus House, a three-bedroom tropical beacon on Horseshoe Bay Beach with sleeping for six. It’s one of the island’s poshest properties and is priced accordingly – from $5600 a week. Still, between six, that’s less than a thousand bucks each. For more rentals: bestofmagnetic.com \

Maggie’s swishest resort has 106 apartments and rooms, with another 56 under construction. Accommodation ranges from hotel studios to contemporary two- and three-bedroom apartments. The pick is 10 block; apartments there have plunge pools and are bookended by the marina and the lagoon pool. Boardwalk Restaurant & Bar offers suitably upscale dining. There’s an on-site Endota spa, too. \

Recently upgraded motel-style units offer comfortable, clean lodgings a thong’s throw from Geoffrey Bay. But the real draw of the Arcadia pub is that it’s the social hub of the island. Cane toad races on Wednesday nights, bingo Friday and Sunday and live music at weekends keep the place pumping. There are also two pools, regular market stalls and Caffe dell’Isola, an authentic Neapolitan pizzeria and gelateria. \

My favourite thing to do on Magnetic Island is nothing. But if you insist on being active, the island is your oyster. The four main settlements – Picnic Bay, Nelly Bay, Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay – are linked by a regular bus service that also stops at the Bungalow Bay Koala Village, a backpacker resort where visitors can cuddle koalas and get up close to crocs. Cute. Maggie’s total population is barely more than 2000, and almost 70 per cent of the island is national park, so it is best explored on foot. Horseshoe Bay is a sweep of golden sand on the north shore offering watersports of every inclination. Beautiful Balding Bay Beach, one of Maggie’s three unofficial nude beaches, is a short, worthwhile hike over the point. Have the bus drop you off at The Forts, a two-hour return walk of gobsmacking views. This is also the starting point for a sweaty but rewarding walk to the postcard-pretty beaches of Florence, Arthur and Radical bays. Highly recommended. Geoffrey Bay is a marine reserve, popular for snorkelling and the dive site of the Moltke wreck. At the northern end of the bay, at Bremner Point, wallabies descend en masse at dusk in the hope of being fed by tourists. Great photo ops. \

LE PARADIS

eat here Fine dining’s not really Maggie’s style but you can still find plenty of good food. Locals rave about Philippe Poitou’s French fare at Le Paradis in Nelly Bay (corner Sooning Street and Mandalay Avenue). Noodies on the Beach at Horseshoe Bay serves some of the better coffee on the island and offers ripper margaritas to match its Mexican-styled menu. The Hotel Arcadia’s bistro gets some stiff competition on Wednesday and Friday nights from Nell’s Indonesian (try the chicken curry, mee goreng, gado gado) and on Friday and Saturday nights from Mi Orchid Thai. Both operate from a kiosk beside the beer garden. \ SEPTEMBER 5, 2013 \ The weekly review 23

ore than 90 per cent of the Cathedral Ranges State Park burnt in the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires. Today, most of the trees are still black and some look more like precarious charcoal sculptures ready to be blown away by the next gust of wind. That said, the scenery in the Cathedral Ranges is dramatic and quickly changing as the forest floor continues to repair itself after the fires. The scenery varies dramatically from dense fern forests full of wildflowers and uprooted trees clad with wild mushrooms, to the always muddy and sodden creek trail, to the rocky summit with an abundance of spiny bushes and sun-bleached, windswept trees. About 2½ hours north-east of Melbourne and about 15 minutes from Marysville, just off the Maroondah Highway, the Cathedral Range State Park is home to the two best day walks Victoria has on offer. Once you tackle either walk, you’ll see why this little-known, steep and rocky mountain range is widely regarded as one of the most diverse, scenic, challenging and still accessible day-walking destinations in the state. It’s a real hiker’s mountain. There are two main trails – the northern circuit and the southern circuit. The southern circuit is much more difficult and better suited to more experienced hikers. Sugarloaf Peak, the notorious Razorback Ridge and Wells Cave are all on the southern circuit. The northern circuit also has its difficult sections, but it is more forgiving and doesn’t force you to scramble up near-vertical cliff faces like its southern equivalent. In my opinion, Cathedral’s northern circuit is the perfect introduction to full-day hikes, which will challenge your fitness and your wit. In total, the 15-kilometre circuit will take at least six hours to complete with a total elevation of 840 metres. There are two preferable starting points; Cooks Mill and Neds Gully. Both are hike-in and drive-in camping grounds with rainwater tanks and toilets.

From the get-go, the track doesn’t beat around the bush (pardon the pun). From Cooks Mill car park, enjoy the short descent to Jawbone Creek before the long and relentless climb up Cathedral’s eastern slope. Three-quarters of the way up is The Farmyard hike-in pause point/camp spot. This small plateau, with a well-used fire pit, is the overnight stop of choice for people walking both circuits in two days. When the bush finally opens up and you step out onto the seven-kilometre long Cathedral Ridge, you learn quickly to keep your footing. This is definitely the highlight of the hike as some sections feel as narrow as a metre wide with almost sheer drops on either side. The traverse, almost a kilometre above sea level, involves some pretty athletic boulder hopping and the orange guiding pointers, which by now will be familiar, are much less conspicuous up here, so keep a sharp eye out and do not rush it. Apart from staying on the track, it’s also worth slowing the pace to appreciate the constant

from the get-go, the track doesn’t beat around the bush

jaw-dropping view of Lake Mountain, Sugarloaf Peak and the farmlands on either side. As you pass Cathedral Peak and eventually branch off from the ridge, take the time to visit Little Cathedral Peak. It involves another steep climb, but it is arguably the best view on the entire walk. Descending back on the eastern slope to Neds Gully, a dense rainforest setting on soft, mossy terrain is a welcome relief for the ankles and knees after a couple of hours navigating the uneven boulders of the ridge. The remainder of the hike is a leisurely stroll along the Little River Track from Neds Gully back to your car. But it is here where the most dramatic scenery change takes place – hectares of tree logging fields rotting under the façade of Jawbone Peak. Admittedly, it is not what you’d expect at the end of what is otherwise a very untouched and organic trek, and it just highlights how dramatic and contrasting the landscapes are here. \ emorton@theweeklyreview.com.au

I’m dead-set sure the locals put one or two really tough good diesel engines at the top of their list. If you sell big 4WDs and you don’t have diesels, well, you don’t sell big 4WDs. And the factory did what lots of factories do and ignored them. So the Patrol has a huge petrol V8 that is to fuel economy what burning coal is to global warming. Maybe the locals are on a promise; if they do the job with this, they’ll get what they asked for. But without diesels, sales can be nothing but modest, especially when prices start at If you can live with this, there is much to $90,000. Land Cruisers are cheaper, and you recommend.
